Speaker 1 (00:00):
We're thrilled and the Nugget season. We're thrilled for the
Nugget season to start tomorrow night as they host the
Oklahoma City Thunder. We'll get back to the text line, Alfred,
You've already angered a lot of people, as you expect
you would. But right now we're talking about Nuggets. With
our next guest, Bill Hanslick joining us. Bill, it's always
great to catch up with you. How are you, sir?

Speaker 2 (00:18):
Yeah, just great. Hi, right, how are you doing? That's
a weird one.

Speaker 3 (00:23):
Oh, I'll tell you what, man. We're excited man about
this rock. It feels like it feels like there's been
an attitude adjustment with the front office and the head
coach this year, and maybe the new rules of the
NBA with all these aprons. Everybody is on board now
with playing young guys and understanding that this is the
way you gotta go.

Speaker 2 (00:44):
Yeah, you know, the Nuggets. You know, people up and
ask me what are the Nuggets gonna be this year?
I said, well, let's just start when you got the
m v P. So so long as the MVP is playing,
you're gonna be at some level of good. You're gonna
be above five hundred long as friends and Porter and
Gordon and Jamal's same deal saying how everybody's got that

(01:06):
same problem staying healthy. Can Christian Brown be that sort
of fifth starter. Are they going to go with Julian
Strather or do they like Strather coming off the bench
for me to this team to elevate, to get back
to possibly winning the Western Conference that you know, that's
for your first big goals. They got to have better

(01:27):
bench play, and that's where you know, I like Westbrook.
You know if people say he can't shoot anymore, well
what he does. And Alford you know this as a player,
the first thing that you have to do, no matter
what sport is a coach is going to see how
hard you play. Well. This guy just leaves it out
there every night, so he can be a huge help.

(01:48):
We're just sort of energizing the bench. So I like him.
I like you know, Strother having a year. You know,
he got healthy and he seems to be shooting rights out.
So that's that's those big things for the bench.

Speaker 1 (02:01):
Do you like the idea specifically that Michael Malone is
going with Brown to start at the two or do
you think that that seat might be a little more
fluid with Strawther if he comes out playing well.

Speaker 2 (02:15):
Now you know what I like Christian. You know, Michael,
no matter what he says, he's a defensive guy, right,
He's Brown's your best defensive player and he's gonna have
to guard good guys. I mean he lost Pope Coble.
Pope was a guy you can put on a lot
of different players on the other team and make it
tough on Well. Christian has that ability. He's maybe even
a little more physical than than Colwell.

Speaker 3 (02:37):
Pope.

Speaker 2 (02:38):
Obviously Colwell shot the three a lot better, but I
think Christian can you know, be in that role and
then that gives Michael. You know, what do you do
with Joe? He could he put him in a three
or two, but he gives you that three point threat.
And playing with Westbrook, I like Schryler coming off the
bench in that the ability to score points could be big.

Speaker 3 (03:01):
Let me ask you about a guy who probably spent
the off season in the gym trying to get a
little bigger, but has that rained you know, he's that
wiry guy at six foot seven, Peyton Watson. What do
you think his development alone with Strather is going to
be as they both worked their way into being veterans
in this league.

Speaker 2 (03:21):
Yeah, for a good point. You know I should have
mentioned him earlier. You know, he had that hamstring problem,
which is too bad, and that kept him out of
a lot of the three seasons. So you might not
expect a lot out of him early. But what he
does again, energy level being a run with Westbrook, defend
multiple position, his length, building to block shots. Has he

(03:42):
has he gotten more consistent with that three point shot.
The three point shot is just huge. So if he
can knock down threes at a reasonal maybe thirty eight,
thirty nine percent, that could be a big help for
the Nuggets. By Peyton bill Handler joining us here.

Speaker 1 (03:59):
As the Nuggets begin their season tomorrow, Night's very excited
to see what they do against the Whoklahom City Thunder.
So this year, it's been an interesting discussion, especially from
some of the national media on the Nuggets, and it's
kind of been all over the place. A lot of
them pointing out, well, hey, without KCP, that's such a
big loss to this team. But I look at I
guess the other way, and maybe it's because I'm a

(04:20):
hardcore Nuggets fan, but I think about what you said
right off the top is the upgrade on the on
the bench, and that for me is worth a conversation
about what you decided to not necessarily be able to
pay KCP. It feels like the bench is going to
be a much bigger story for this team this year.

Speaker 2 (04:38):
Do you agree totally? And all you have to do
is think back what happened in what was that game
seventh Minnesota? You had them down twenty and jamal On
Joker scoord and they had five other points from everybody
else in the second half. Everybody else that can't happen.

(05:00):
You've got to help have helped your bench, and I
think this year's bench can provide that. You've got a
couple of guys that were real young, but now they're
in their second, third, forty years. I even think a
guy like Zeep Nasei Ken, if he's healthy, he could
give them some off the bench too. So the Nugget

(05:21):
season to me, just rides with that bench. They got
to have better playoffs their bench, and they.

Speaker 3 (05:27):
Got to ask you this is the tough question that
most people were trying to figure out last year, and
that is do you really understand the second apron and
the NBA rules as they currently have, bit as they
currently exist right now, because I understand in that second

(05:47):
apron that you lose your mid level exception. But at
the same time, I'm like, well, how valuable is the
mid level exemption exemption when you start talking about building
a team. So I'll ask you the first course and
do you really understand it?

Speaker 2 (06:05):
Uh? Wholeheartedly?

Speaker 3 (06:06):
And then what is the second What what to tell
me about how important a mid level exemption really is?

Speaker 2 (06:13):
Albrid, you know, getting in here is it? He's he
can out the guy like Hett. I mean, it's crazy
how they change the drouth And you've got to see it.
The salaries of with some of the players. The guy
there's a guy in Atlanta the other day it signed
five year. I want to say, it's like one hundred

(06:35):
and fifty million. I couldn't tell you who he was.
He's one hundred fifty million clients. I'm like, so the
salary's day. I let the front office have it. Who
do you have they can play? Who can play the game?
And I like the Nuggets roster. But interestingly, when you
go around, particularly in the Western Conference, Holy cow, who's better?

(06:57):
Who's worst? There's so many teams just look like they're
a little bit better. Yeah, Portland's not very good, Utah
is not very good. They'll lose the game. But what
was Houston do? Nallas was right on the edge. I mean,
the Lakers will be solid to get getting help relates
all that. Minnesota, although they traded towns that got randalled

(07:20):
and Knive Reed comes up, they look really good to
me too. There's so many teams that are good. And
it used to me you go through your schedule and
you say, oh, that's a win. That's a win. That's
a win. There's not too many of that's a win.
You're gonna have to bring it every night to win
in the Western Conference.

Speaker 3 (07:39):
That's got to be a credit to the NBA, I guess,
and these new rules. I guess this is what the
owners really wanted. Is is more parody. If you are
trying to look at building a league and building excitement,
you know you can't do super teams anymore. Although the
Nuggets seem like they have four players that are super

(08:00):
team type players. But if you you can't acquire them
through free agency anymore.

Speaker 2 (08:06):
Yeah, you're right now. The teams that are not happy
are those major market like the Lakers the Clippers, and
the Clippers are going downhill in a big way because
the injuries they've had, lost Paul George for basically nothing,
Kawhi can't play. I don't look for them to be
very good, but yeah, the major markets are like, well
we got to do we can spend it any time. Well,

(08:29):
you got to have that salary cap. So it it creates, uh,
you know, different teams, giving them a chance to win
versus no chance.

Speaker 1 (08:37):
Has always great to have you on, man, look forward
to watching you tomorrow night as the uggets gets underway.
You're the best man.

Speaker 2 (08:43):
Appreciate it. Let's let's do it. Look for it. Call
me anytime. You guys are a blast.
