Speaker 6 (00:33):
Look, if you tune into the show every week or
podcast on the IRT Radio National network, you know the
quarter former NFL quarterback, myself, Mike. It's been about six
years now we've been calling the show Steelers Chalk Talk.

Speaker 4 (00:50):
We're proud to.

Speaker 6 (00:50):
Announce that we have changed the name and we'll be
changing it over to.

Speaker 4 (00:56):
Let's talk Stealers. Remember like your grandpappy used to say
at a seventy and m.

Speaker 6 (01:01):
Steelers guys, Super Bowl st I l hyphen rs.

Speaker 4 (01:08):
It's called a colloquialism. A colloquialism.

Speaker 6 (01:10):
You kids go into West Liberty and Bethany, Uh look
it up in that their dictionary.

Speaker 4 (01:17):
Colloquialism.

Speaker 6 (01:19):
That's a word definition means local to the area. I
guess like we speak enser in Western Pa. In West Virginia. Uenser,
when you speak inser, you're speaking in colloquialisms. So when
we say let's go Steelers, let's talk Steelers, we're using
colloquialisms for Steelers. We're excited about that that name change

(01:44):
comes because we have some exciting news. You know, Mike
and I have been doing radio for some different stations
for the last six years. Latrobe covering training camp. Of
course iHeart Fox Sports Wheeling, West Virginia. Shout out to
Corey and Craig who keep us on the air each week.

(02:05):
We're very excited that we will be on television. Yeah,
you get to see my ugly Mike mug mug tank tantlier.
Of course, the NFL quarterback Mike McMahon who played for
the Lions and Eagles. Well, Mike, you know, I got
a face it's made for radio. Looks like somebody hit
me in a face with a coal shovel, Whereas Mike,

(02:28):
he looks like that prototypical, good looking all American boy
at quarterback. That's why we're going on television. Mike's the
brains and the beauty behind the operation. Here Sunday mornings
ten thirty am. You can watch us on twenty two
to the point, Yeah, very excited about that actual television

(02:51):
you know, Like remember Willy Wonker from the seventies when
TV Mike jumped in front of the camera after Willie
transported to the Chocolate Bar via TV waves.

Speaker 4 (03:02):
Mike said on TV.

Speaker 6 (03:03):
Mike transport me, and he ended up a little three
inch little boy there.

Speaker 4 (03:08):
Hopefully, well, the tank.

Speaker 6 (03:09):
Could lose some weight, so if they transport me through
the airwaves.

Speaker 4 (03:14):
I can use shit a few pounds. You're very excited
about that.

Speaker 6 (03:18):
Twenty to the point Sunday mornings at ten thirty am,
starting the week nine nine, we decided to do half
the season. We've got some great sponsors on board. Italian
Village Pizza can't say enough about it. Go see him
at one of their eighteen locations anywhere from Little Washington

(03:38):
to of course their restaurant Trataria, the Italian Village Trataria
up there on Route twenty eight Waterworks, Small Mike and
I will be filming live episodes from Italian Village up
on the Route twenty eight, sometimes at lunch, sometimes Tuesday evenings.
We've got to get through the election cycle, and my

(04:00):
coach in high school football for North Catholic. Very excited
about that, very excited about starting the show, and we
want of that in Italian Village Pizza and one you
go into a Dallian Village Pizza to see the TV show.
Or if you go to the Lawrenceville Distilling Lawrenceville Distilling.

(04:20):
The Lawrenceville Distilling in Lawrenceville, Pa. Are their new location
at Christmas Up in Verona. You can order old Joe
Grout there. Joe DeGroot, that's a hell of a name.
He looks like a the grout. You know, he opened
a encyclopedia and what's a Joe de Groot there? He

(04:41):
is smiling, happy, mixing drinks. Joe and his brothers have
opened their own distillery in Pittsburgh. They make award winning
gins and vodkas, Parking Chair vodka, Ginzer. Just a really
great atmosphere there. Nice guys too. You ever go on

(05:02):
a bar any owners there and he's a jack or
a jag off, and it's like, why would I give
you my heart to earn money?

Speaker 7 (05:11):
Man?

Speaker 6 (05:11):
I get up at four am, go to work, earn money.
And it's hard to earn these days. Inflation's killing me,
killing everybody. And your bartender, you the owner. I'm gonna
go into local tavern and you're just gonna go. Ah,
that's not what you get at Lawrenceville Distilling. Joe to group,
my buddy Joe and his brothers. They're good guys. They're

(05:34):
down to earth guys.

Speaker 4 (05:35):
Man.

Speaker 6 (05:37):
They love new customers, they love meeting people. They're awesome.
They have music. Check them out at Lawrenceville Distilling. But
you when you come see a live taping, you can
get Joe there invented a drink just for our show called.

Speaker 4 (05:52):
The Line of Scrimmage. The Line of Scrimmage.

Speaker 6 (05:57):
Wonderful, made with their gin and some bidders and just wonderful.

Speaker 4 (06:02):
So let's talk stealers is the name of the show
moving forward.

Speaker 6 (06:07):
And of course come see at us at the Twian
Village Pizza or go to Lawrenceville is stealing their two
locations in Pittsburgh, Lawrenceville, Verona.

Speaker 4 (06:16):
And say Tank told me to get one of them.
Dare lines of Scrimmages?

Speaker 6 (06:21):
Oh you mean the drink that's made with gin, embitters
and a shot at bourbon of our own. Lawrenceville is
stealing bourbon on his side, coming right up, cupcake, All right,
some things to talk about with your Pittsburgh Steelers looked
good there at three and oh didn't it? I mean, defensively,

(06:44):
we was a human. We was a human.

Speaker 4 (06:48):
You gotta love Patrick Queen.

Speaker 6 (06:52):
You gotta love Eldon Roberts at inside linebacker. The rookie
is getting snaps. Peyton Wilson the gazelle. I call him
that because he is as fast as a gazelle.

Speaker 4 (07:06):
That guy in year five.

Speaker 6 (07:08):
He packs on forty pounds of muscle, which NFL guys do.
Let me step back and give you some insight into
a locker room.

Speaker 4 (07:17):
Many of you know.

Speaker 6 (07:18):
I played left bench at pitt back in the glory
days in the eighties, and a friend of mine who's
gone now, who has missed. He was a great guy,
really affable gentleman. On the football field, he'd rip your
head off. He almost took my head off one day.
We can get into that another day. But often recognized

(07:41):
as the greatest college lineman of all time. Bill Frelek,
Pittsburgh's own Bill Frelek, a Penn Hills. You know, Bill
lifted weights all the time at pitt He was massive
when he got into the NFL. Drafted by the Atlanta Falcons.
Billy came home for homecoming whatever it was the next year,

(08:02):
came into the locker room, say hi to the guys,
work out. I didn't think he could get bigger and
more muscular and more defined.

Speaker 4 (08:12):
He did.

Speaker 6 (08:13):
That was the regiment of the NFL diet, workout routine,
and of course.

Speaker 4 (08:18):
Growing into a man.

Speaker 6 (08:20):
You know, at that age, early twenties, when you you know,
two three years, you really grow into your manhood. So
the point I'm saying there is Peyton Wilson it inside linebacker,
He's going to grow man and once he learns to
read an NFL offense, he's going to be awesome. But
the defense really carried the Steelers for the first three weeks.

(08:42):
I mean, speaking of the Atlanta Falcons, if it wasn't
for Chris Boswell, you'd have zero points out of Arthur
Smith's offense. Out of Arthur Smith's offense, Arthur Smith's offense.
Start bearing this in mind, because I'm not hearing a

(09:03):
lot of people talk about it yet. Mike Tomlin has
just taken you through a living hell of offensive coordinators.

Speaker 4 (09:13):
Todd Haley. Now, a lot of people in the internation
it's like Todd Haley wasn't that bad. He ain't pretty good.
You're an idiot. Shut up. Todd Haley was a moron.

Speaker 6 (09:25):
That Steelers offense should have been to two Super Bowls
with the Killer Bees.

Speaker 4 (09:29):
Todd Haley was a moron.

Speaker 5 (09:33):
He had a future Hall of Fame quarterback in Ben Roethlisberger,
he had a b he had bell in the backfield,
he had arguably the best offensive line in the league.
And Todd Haley screwed the Steelers out of going to
Super Bowl.

Speaker 4 (09:51):
So don't tell me Todd Hailey was good.

Speaker 6 (09:56):
Paul at Katie Ka and buddy of mine, Todd Haley's
a genius. You're just a unzer. Don't tell me that crap.
You don't know what you're talking about. Your head's up,
your third point in contact. Todd Haley sucked. They ran
him out of Cleveland. He's coaching midget football in Tampa
now because no NFL team wants him. Tell me Todd

(10:19):
Haley was a good offensive coordinator. Hey, you're listening to Steeler.
Oh no, you're listening to Let's talk Steelers. I'm Tank Tantlinger.
Then Mike Tomlin presented you with Randy Fiekner.

Speaker 4 (10:32):
I like Randy. He's a nice man.

Speaker 6 (10:36):
He was there to hold Ben Roethlisberger's hands. Horrible decision.
Then the genius Mike Tomlin presented to you Steelers Nation
one Matthew Canada.

Speaker 4 (10:52):
Yep, I just.

Speaker 6 (10:53):
Heard tires squeak on cars. Some lady in Steubenville. Her
beer was in a red soul cupage. She it just
flew out of her hands. She threw it at the speaker. Sorry,
I mentioned Matthew Canada's name, but you have to. Those
who forget history are doomed to remember it. Hence arking

(11:15):
to Arthur Smith, Arthur Smith, Arthur Smith, I'm just gonna
pencil that in for right now.

Speaker 4 (11:24):
It's this season unfold.

Speaker 6 (11:26):
Is Arthur Smith a better coordinator than Matt Canada and
Todd Haley?

Speaker 4 (11:30):
Absolutely, that's already a parent.

Speaker 6 (11:34):
What concerns me is it don't take much to get
better than Matt Canada. It down, you guys sitting down
there in Jack's Bar in the Southside.

Speaker 4 (11:46):
I've drank with you darn Steelers games last year. We
had to. It was miserable you had a drink. You
guys sitting at Jacks called better games than Matt Canada.

Speaker 5 (11:58):
Anybody did Steely McBean could have been your offensive coordinator
and did better than Matthew Canada.

Speaker 4 (12:07):
Arthur Smith Arthur Smith, Arthur Smith not happy after five games?
Is he better? Sure?

Speaker 6 (12:17):
Who wouldn't throw the ball to the tight end Friarmouth
and Washington? Who wouldn't matt Canada wouldn't? Who wouldn't send
George Pickens on a variety of routes other than just
jump fifty to fifty balls down the sideline like Matthew
Canada did. There was no reason to go into Atlanta

(12:43):
and put up no points. In fact, should this not
have been a vindication game for Arthur Smith? They fired him?
Remember the Falcons fired Arthur Smith, and we thought it
was a good decision to then hire him. Hire the

(13:07):
guy that had been fired, not find some brilliant young
man out there that's doing something at the collegiate level
or an underling on a pro level. It's called a
coaching tree. It's not called pick the apples off the
ground because the tree doesn't fall far from the tree

(13:28):
that a coach got fired.

Speaker 4 (13:29):
To understand what I'm saying, Arthur Smith. Arthur Smith, Order Smith. Thanks,
You guys need to get out to a faster start.

Speaker 7 (13:38):
Like I said, just have that same mentality that we
have in the third and fourth quarter and just start
off with it, you know, not warming up to you know,
the game and just coming out hot. So like I've said,
what a couple of weeks ago, it's not miss school.
It's just you know us, you know, coming out and
executing our job.

Speaker 8 (13:52):
So, yeah, you've had a good report with your tight ends.
What about that group respectively?

Speaker 4 (13:57):
Makes them?

Speaker 7 (13:59):
Yeah, I mean they're know, we have a great tight
end group. I think they're all kind of specializing different things.
They're all versatile, and they're all kind of different. You know.
Of course you Darnel his body size and you know
just how athletic he is, what he can do blocking
wise and stuff like that too. U Pat all around,
you know, shout out to day More too likes to

(14:20):
say I know, but yeah, Connor he's a great, great
route runner, smart player, and you know all of them
are smart. So they definitely allow us to do a
lot of things on offense. For sure, guys do to
different Yeah, definitely need to uh you know, create explosive.
But I think you know, we we we had a
chance and the first one that Connor was you know

(14:40):
six or six inches. Maybe it put out too far
front up to where he had to die, but really
just connected. You know, Art is going to make sure
we get our shot shot plays in and you know,
try to create some of those explosis but it's really
just connecting downfield. And of course that starts up front
with protection and stuff like that. But usually once we
do that, you know, it's just comes pitch of catches

(15:00):
from there.

Speaker 4 (15:01):
So does that open up some of the run game?

Speaker 7 (15:03):
Then if you do start to connect on some of
you I think so, you know, you know, defense might
start getting the shell and stuff like that. Really just
depending on who you play. But you know, every game
you want you know a big number of explosive plays.
You know, that's just gonna get the offense in the
rhythm and of course you know, just trying to get
it up to the basso.

Speaker 9 (15:20):
Yeah, ARTHEMI said that.

Speaker 10 (15:21):
You're a school guy, school of mentality.

Speaker 9 (15:25):
He's going the ones incortible things like that. Where do
you think that when the school of mentality comes from?

Speaker 4 (15:29):
Is that's something that.

Speaker 11 (15:30):
He's told you or that you thought for him?

Speaker 7 (15:32):
Not really, I mean I'm guessing I just get it.
From my dad. You know, I think me and him
are like but you haven't ever heard that. So yeah,
I just try to come in the same every day,
you know, with the same intentionality to come in and
work and give better appreciate that.

Speaker 2 (15:47):
Would you kind of shot?

Speaker 9 (15:48):
How did your dad model the whole school mentality?

Speaker 7 (15:51):
I mean, yeah, you know, he was a cop growing up,
military man, so you know, super disciplined and shoot, I
will tell you, I guess I'll tell some stories. But
I was in the I think seventh grade. I think
I got to see in math class and he shaved
my head bald, shaved it bad. At the house. We went,

(16:12):
we went to Mark Walmart. He picked up a a
Walmart sweat so that had like an army take on it.
Got shoes, got like started shoes from Walmart, made me
wear at the school. I mean, it was probably the
worst day of my life, you know. So but it's
like that, but you know, I'm glad, you know, to
this day that he did that. I think it, you know,
just made me the name I am today. But yeah,
so I just try to come in and you know,

(16:34):
really just you know, show gratitude towards you know, my
job and I'm grateful to be here and be in
this position and really just take take advantage of every opportunity.
I mean, I was trying to get it up fast.
I was asking to teacher for extra credit and all that. So, yeah,
did your hair grow back? It took me a long time.
I mean, he did it twice. So he did it

(16:55):
one time in seventh grade and another time in ninth grade.
I forgot what I did in ninth grade. For him
to do it again, you know that wasn't It wasn't
a one time thing. So that just shows you how
bet if kid, how bad of a kid I might
have been growing up.

Speaker 12 (17:06):
So yeah, largely if you told us about the importance
of not kind of preordaining when you're going to go
to George, Like you don't want to force the ball
to Georgia out to give the situation. Do you have
to really govern yourself in that regard? All the more
if it's not getting as many snaps as was the
case last week, you have to to watch this of them.

Speaker 7 (17:24):
Yeah, I think you do. I think you have to
let it come to you.

Welcome back to Let's Talks Steelers. I'm your host, Tank Tantlinger. Yeah,
Let's Talk Steelers. If you listen to the show Saturday
mornings ten am. Here.

Speaker 4 (18:10):
You know, for years, Mike and I've been calling it Steelers.

Speaker 6 (18:13):
Chalk talk, Steelers chalk talk. We're excited we're actually going
on television. You'll be able to see my ugly mug.
Of course, Mike's the good looking NFL quarterback. Sunday mornings
ten thirty twenty two to the point Pittsburgh, you guys,
West Virginia, Ohio, Maryland area. You'll be able to watch

(18:33):
the show. Really excited. We are changing the show's name
to Let's Talk Steelers. You know, the old school seventy stealers.
Here we go steelers STI L hyphen r S stealers. Right,
we can't use steelers. That's trademark by the NFL. So

(18:53):
as the next couple months go by, we'll be rebranding
still me talking my crazy insanity stuff. Anyway, welcome back
to let's talk Steelers talking about crazy insanity stuff your ahead.
Coach Mike Demmlin held his weekly press conference this week
and prior to the Raiders game, and we're gonna play

(19:18):
clips from the question and answer period with the reporters
down There always a fun exchange with coach Mike Zemmlin
and was.

Speaker 11 (19:28):
Less accurate in the last game that he had been
over the first four games.

Speaker 4 (19:32):
Is there something that Dallas was doing or something that
just wasn't working for him?

Speaker 11 (19:36):
How do you kind of explain that, missus.

Speaker 8 (19:38):
Probably a little bit of both.

Speaker 13 (19:39):
I think each game a performance kind of stands on
its own, and there are always some variables that affect performance,
whether you're talking about an individual or collective.

Speaker 8 (19:47):
Certainly, well, you.

Speaker 4 (19:48):
Mentioned that Russ is going to take the second team reps.

Speaker 14 (19:51):
Will that opened the door for him to at least
be active and serve as the backup or is there
something that's.

Speaker 7 (19:55):
Going to answer that question during the league?

Speaker 13 (19:57):
I think the fact that he's a full participant is
is a door that's a jar. But to say any
more than that is to speculate, because he's got to
get through the day. He's got to show up on
Thursday and see what the Rose leaders in terms of that,
like in all circumstances, I know, I kind of say
it in a blanket sort of way, but it legitimately
is our approach to business, the limited participation. Guys, We

(20:21):
let the amount of participation in the equality that participation
be our guide in terms of whether or not we
include them and how much we include them as we
push forward toward game time.

Speaker 8 (20:30):
And it remains the same at that position.

Speaker 4 (20:33):
What did you think of Kyle Allen when he came
in fresh there without much move up and.

Speaker 13 (20:38):
Cut that not surprised by anything that we get from
Kyle Allen? Man, you know, he's uniquely positioned as a
third quarterback. Man, he's uniquely experienced as a third quarterback
in a room, and not surprised that he's able to
step in and you know, complete a ball for us.
And I think the fact that we, you know, call
that concept is reflective of our confidence in him and

(20:59):
his ability to throw it as reflective of his confidence
in himself.

Speaker 4 (21:03):
Like, what was your evaluation of the running back groups?

Speaker 7 (21:05):
On that.

Speaker 13 (21:06):
You know, you know, I would like to have controlled
the game more in that area, but early on we
weren't winning enough possession downs and it was a limited
possession game, so it probably didn't develop. The run game
I'm speaking of probably didn't develop in the ways that
we would like. I saw a foundation there, but the

(21:27):
snap totality was not what we desired in an effort
to really control the game.

Speaker 8 (21:33):
Dallas possessed the ball.

Speaker 13 (21:35):
We didn't win enough third downs they did, particularly in
the second half, and particularly in terms of the second half,
the attrition component of the run game got compromised because
of those variables. Dallas was converting third downs on offense
and so they were possessing a ball. It created a
limited possession game for us. When we got going, we
got going at such a pace where we weren't able

(21:56):
to lean or focus on it in the ways that
will allow it to lead to charge.

Speaker 8 (22:00):
From a nutrition standpoint.

Speaker 11 (22:02):
Is there an element of Russell's game that this offense
is missing, maybe that he can provide if and when
he plays when he's healthy.

Speaker 13 (22:10):
I think that's somewhat speculative because he hasn't performed here,
and so I think that will get revealed when he
gets an opportunity to perform here and be revealed with
more clarity the more that he performs here.

Speaker 4 (22:22):
You guys have had five.

Speaker 14 (22:24):
Different offensive line than five straight games.

Speaker 4 (22:26):
Just as far as the starters available, What can.

Speaker 14 (22:28):
You guys do to help that group kind of call
that's better or work around them as they're growing.

Speaker 13 (22:33):
Yet I'm not displeased with how they're functioning. To be
quite honest with you, it may affect us at the
beginning of games. I know you guys have asked a
lot about the lack of fluidity in some of our starts,
and sometimes it's just that we've had a roller decks
of a lineup. But we won't allow it to be
an excuse for us. It won't affect our ability to

(22:55):
secure victory over the course of sixty minutes. Oftentimes it
just takes a little while as a collective, a particular collective,
to warm up to the work that needs to be
done within the stadium.

Speaker 8 (23:07):
And so that's how it's been.

Speaker 13 (23:09):
We haven't started with the fluidity that we'd like, but
over the course of sixty minutes it always seems to
smooth out and position us to win and I think
that's been the case more recently as well. In the meanwhile,
we're getting quality experience from some young guys and they're
proven that they're capable and that they belong and so
that's exciting. As we get guys back, I think we're

(23:32):
really going to benefit from some of the challenges that
have come with some of the rotations that you mentioned.

Speaker 8 (23:38):
You saw Isam Wildermilk on the edge at least a
little bit in that game. Are you open to doing
more of that like you were with Leal?

Speaker 4 (23:44):
With him and how has you just seen him kind
of develop both the totality.

Speaker 13 (23:47):
We've done that in the past and we will obviously
moving forward. He's just a versatile guy. He and lee
Al are defensive lignment that are participants in special teams.
Both guys are on kickoff and I think that speaks
to their unique skill sets and allows him to position
flexibility to slide outside and give us some big man

(24:08):
presents when lines get short.

Speaker 12 (24:10):
Certainly aside from George, what's your evaluation of the rest
of the wide receiver rooms so far?

Speaker 4 (24:16):
Some of his snaps you're going to have to be
delineated to.

Speaker 8 (24:18):
Those other guys.

Speaker 13 (24:19):
I like the contributions of different guys over at different times.
There have been moments. Calvin had a big game a
couple of weeks ago. If you're talking specifically about the
passing game, you can't exclude Mooth. We've just done long
just did long contract, long term contract business with Mouth.
He's a tidy end, but he is a receiver in
that he is a central component of what we do

(24:41):
in the passing game. I am comfortable with the contributions
of the collective, but I acknowledge who does what weekend
and week out might not be overly predictable, but I
don't necessarily viewed as a negative. If they're capable and
they're prepared, it makes them a difficult collective to prepare for. Scotty,
for example, has had his moments. Van has had his moments.

(25:03):
I like the work of all of those guys. We
got branded in the uniform last week. He made a
player two for us. We'll keep working, they'll keep ready
in themselves, and I'm sure we'll get the necessary plays
that we need from the collective.

Speaker 7 (25:16):
Like on the play by.

Speaker 4 (25:17):
Atlanta Roberts forts fumble. You know, it looks like you
mentioned something to make up before that Is that something
he sees it does on his.

Speaker 13 (25:24):
Own or is that something that you guys coach O
just that moment you're talking about the goal line circumstance. Yeah,
it's it's in that moment. It's a skill set that
he brings, certainly a feel and timing, but it's also
definitely something that you're coaching those moments.

Speaker 14 (25:43):
You haven't had a general problem with Georgie Picktt's effort,
but have you seen him maybe not run routes as
hard as you think he should on certain players? Or
is I didn't note that you guys have had an
office like, hey need this mart of here?

Speaker 4 (25:53):
Is that part of the load management discussion?

Speaker 8 (25:55):
Is certainly part of the load management discussion.

Speaker 14 (25:58):
Like you say, Rustle needs to be able to protect
something WHI fashion you need just from a mobility standpoint,
that kind of stuff.

Speaker 1 (26:03):
Yes, well, Mike, does Peyton Wilson have the type of
attributes that could lead him out on the on the
outside onto the edge.

Speaker 8 (26:13):
No, he does not.

Speaker 4 (26:16):
Anyone?

Speaker 8 (26:18):
All right, thanks getting all right?

Speaker 15 (26:22):
Well, welcome in Missy Matthews. Missy, it's always interesting to
hear what Mike Tomlin has to say on these Tomlin
Tuesdays and thank you for joining us on Katik Plus
and steal the digital platforms. I mean, the big thing
is Russell Wilson will be a full participant, albeit you know,
running with the second team tomorrow. But eventually this is
going to lead to a decision one way or the other.
He's progressing health wise, that's a good thing, but they

(26:44):
have to see throughout the course of this week if
he's capable of dealing with what you have to deal
with on a normal Sunday in the NFL.

Speaker 10 (26:49):
Yeah, I think o'chalma made it clear that he's going
to run with the second unit so that Justin Fields
can continue to prepare as the starter with the rest
of the ones. Was asked hypothetically, you know, could we
see russ is the backup, not the emergency third quarterback
this week? And I think potentially, based on what he said,
if he's able to go full all week, that seems
more likely. But I think starting this week, I'm not

(27:11):
necessarily seeing that happening.

Speaker 15 (27:12):
Yeah, I mean Justin Field's you know, engineered a nice
drive which resulted in a go ahead touchdown late in
that game. I think what we've seen over him over
the past several weeks is encouraging certainly, so that's part
of the decision making process there. But again, you know,
and Mike had to address this to slow starts that
has been a problem with this team in terms of
getting off the better start so that you put the

(27:33):
other team in a position to come from behind, which
I think feeds into the way that defense plays. That's
something that has to certainly change, I would think starting
this week in Vegas.

Speaker 7 (27:41):
Yeah.

Speaker 10 (27:42):
I do think though a stark difference from what happened
against Dallas than what we sell an indie going down
seven to nothing, they were kind of, you know, trading
field goals and points back and forth. It didn't seem
like it got too far out of hand that the
Steelers wouldn't have had a chance to stay in the game.
But agree, you know, the miscommunication on defence, just the
self inflicted wounds. It's all the players talked about afterwards

(28:04):
in the locker room. The penalties five in the first half.
That was something that you know, was an issue early
in the season. They seemed to clean it up and
it was hampering them. Again, those are things that can't happen.

Speaker 15 (28:15):
Yeah, and we'll get into George Pickens, but he had
to say about that, and also you know the guys
who are behind him and some players who have to
make more contributions to this past game as they move forward.
It's the Steelers and the Raiders coming up on Sunday
four five on KDKA. Steelers need to get back on
the winning side after losing two in a row. They've
allowed the Maltimore Ravens to catch them. Now they're both
three and two. We'll continue with our conversation about Mike

(28:37):
tomlind what he had to say today on a Tomlin
Tuesday right here on the upmc rooney Sports Complex on
the south side of Pittsburgh.

Speaker 7 (28:43):
Will be right back.

Speaker 4 (28:52):
Hi, folks, welcome to the Pittsburgh Steelers Hall of Honor Museum.

Speaker 8 (28:58):
Now this is the best era. I couldn't agree more.
Those teams were unstoppable.

Speaker 4 (29:04):
The teams are really good in the nineties, come on.

Speaker 10 (29:07):
You couldn't catch those teams?

Speaker 4 (29:08):
Are the two thousands?

Speaker 8 (29:10):
Literally, the seventies were the best. Oh wait, the two thousand, well, well,
stop fighting. I think every era was pretty sweet. You
said it, kid. Hope you guys enjoy yourself, your tea.

Speaker 7 (29:22):
To visit you know, did you guys, defense, you get
three interceptions, a fumble, block, field goal, and everything kind
of comes down to one play at.

Speaker 1 (29:28):
The same time.

Speaker 16 (29:29):
Yeah, as usually all these games come down, you know
what I'm saying, And uh, you know we're holding up
and you gotta better stop them on that one play.

Speaker 4 (29:39):
Second and third down.

Speaker 12 (29:40):
Lamb that pops the ball loose on the one play incompletion.

Speaker 7 (29:43):
On the other play, you.

Speaker 12 (29:43):
Guys come out for fourth down after they called the
time out.

Speaker 4 (29:47):
What did you see? I don't might call the time out.

Speaker 12 (29:49):
You just not have the right look that you wanted
there based on what their personnel was.

Speaker 16 (29:53):
Oh, I'm not sure. I think I think they of course,
he just wanted to see what they were going to
come out in once they broke out on.

Speaker 17 (29:59):
How can so is that there's still these communication issues
and Mike t called it a lack of connectivity on
defense in the first half. You know, you guys have
been through four or five games now that these are still.

Speaker 16 (30:08):
Coming out, you know the other thing is too high
of a concern. I think, Uh it's easy fixes. Uh,
we just I think we just kind of overemphasized it
during the week. Uh, we gotta practice with crowd noise
the entire week. We gotta make sure.

Speaker 7 (30:22):
Everybody knows uh what they're doing.

Speaker 16 (30:25):
Uh. We gotta make sure, uh everybody's on the same page.
You know, it's a new new secondary. We've got a
lot of new faces, uh, younger, younger faces, and you know,
we might not have that chemistry uh that we had
in the past, but uh, it's definitely something that we
can work on.

Speaker 4 (30:42):
You had close to eighty plays defensive play.

Speaker 7 (30:44):
How much of effect did that have on the defense?

Speaker 16 (30:47):
I don't think it has any effect.

Speaker 17 (30:49):
Is it encouraging that you guys did have the splash
plays that were missing last week, that you were able
to get three stops on defense and then that one
on special teams?

Speaker 7 (30:58):
Yeah? Yeah, I think it was uh uh in urging
for sure.

Speaker 16 (31:01):
I think we still need to play better on other
Downas Kansas always rely on splash, we gotta rely on execution,
and with execution comes at splash.

Speaker 4 (31:11):
What do you guys say to be.

Speaker 4 (32:37):
Channel Guy will be listed as Let's Tax Stalles.

Speaker 8 (32:41):
Hey, you know.

Speaker 6 (32:44):
Some hard questions were asked of Justin Fields and some
of the other players in the locker room this week.
So let's head down into the Stalls locker room and
here from your current commander in chief, Justin Field, how
do you.

Speaker 12 (33:01):
Feel like you guys need to get up to a
faster start.

Speaker 7 (33:05):
Like I said, just have that same mentality that we
have in the third and fourth quarter and just start
off with it, you know, not warming up to you know,
the game and just coming out hot. So like I've said,
what a couple of weeks ago, it's not miss school.
It's just you know us, you know, coming out a
lot and executing our job.

Speaker 8 (33:19):
So, yeah, you've had a good report with your tight ends.
What about that group efectively makes them?

Speaker 7 (33:26):
Yeah, I mean they're you know, we have a great
tight end group. I think they're all kind of specializing
different things. They're all versatile, and they're all kind of different.

Speaker 8 (33:33):
You know.

Speaker 7 (33:34):
Of course Darnell his body size and you know just
how athletic he is, what he can do blocking wise
and stuff like that too. H Pat all around, you know,
shout out to day more too. As you say, y'all know.
But yeah, Connor he's a great, great route runner, smart player,
and you know all of them are smart. So they
definitely allow us to do a lot of things on

(33:55):
offense for sure. Just what you guys doing different last plays, Yeah,
definitely need to uh you know, create explosive. But I
think you know, we we we had a chance and
the first one of Connor was you know six or
six inches, maybe it foot out too far in front
of to where you had to die, but really just connected.
You know, Art is going to make sure we get
our shot, shot plays in and you know, try to

(34:17):
create some of those explosive but it's really just connecting downfield.
And of course that starts up front with protection and
stuff like that. But usually once you do that, you know,
it just it just becomes a piece of catch from there.

Speaker 4 (34:28):
So does that open up some of the run game
that if you do start to connect on.

Speaker 16 (34:31):
Some of ears.

Speaker 7 (34:33):
I think so, you know, you know, defense might start
getting the shell and stuff like that. Really just depending
on who you play. But you know, every game you
want you know a big number of explosive players. You
know that's just gonna get the offense and the rhythm
and of course you know, just trying to get up
from the boss.

Speaker 2 (34:47):
Yeah, Arthur sid said that.

Speaker 9 (34:48):
You're a school guy with school mentality of the things
like that. Where do you think that type of scool
mentality comes from?

Speaker 2 (34:56):
Is that something that he's.

Speaker 7 (34:57):
Told you or that you've got a more not really,
I mean I guess when I just get it from
my dad. You know, I think me and him are alike,
but you haven't even heard that. So but yeah, I
just try to come in the same every day, you know,
with the same intentionality to come in and work and
get a better should How did.

Speaker 9 (35:15):
Your dad's model the whole school mentality?

Speaker 7 (35:18):
I mean, yeah, you know, he was a cop growing up,
military man, so you know, super disciplined and shoot, I
will tell you, I guess I'll tell some stories. But
I was in the I think seventh grade. I think
I got to see in math class and he shaved
my head bald, shaved it bad. At the house. We went,

(35:39):
we went to Mark Walmart. He picked up a a
Walmart sweat so that had like an army take on it.
Got shoes, got like started shoes from Walmart, made me
wear at the school. I mean, it was probably the
worst day of my life, you know. So but it's
like that, but you know, I'm glad, you know to
this day that he just that it. I think it,
you know, just made me the man I am today.
But yeah, I just try to come in and you know,

(36:01):
really just you know, show gratitude towards you know, my job,
and I'm grateful to be here and be in this
position and really just take take advantage of every opportunity.
I mean, I was trying to get it up fast.
I was asking to teacher for extra cut and all that. So, uh, yeah,
what did your hair cla It took me a long time.
I mean, he did it twice. So he did it

(36:22):
one time in seventh grade and another time in ninth grade.
I forgot what I did in ninth grade for him
to do it again. But you know that wasn't It
wasn't a one time thing. So that just shows you
how bad if a kid, how bad of a kid
I might have been growing up.

Speaker 12 (36:34):
So yeah, So largely if you told us about the
importance of not kind of pre ordaining when you're going
to go to George, like you don't want to force
the goal, and given the situation, do you have to
really govern yourself in that regard all the more if
he's not getting as many snaps as was the case
last week, do you have to cautions of that?

Speaker 7 (36:51):
Yeah? I think you do. I think you have to
let it come to you. You really don't want to
force it because it kind of you know, messes you know,
up your flood as a quarterback though, and yeah, but
of course at the same time, as a quarterback, you
want to you know, give one of your best playmakers
the ball and have the ball in his hands, you know,
because he's he's great with it. He can make plays downfield.
So really just you know, finding a balance and not

(37:14):
really necessarily forcing the ball. But you know, when you
know he is opening and when there's a chance to
getting him the ball, definitely want to feed him for sure.

Speaker 4 (37:20):
You just talk you to deal with how do you
deal with that when he is frustrated?

Speaker 7 (37:24):
Yeah, I mean it's tough. It's tough. You know, you
definitely got to feel for him. He's just passing about
the game, like we talked about earlier this year, and
you know, he knows how great of a player he is,
and you know, it's tough. So I think, you know,
just talking to him, you know, I try to talk
to him on the sideline, keep him, keep him up,
I think that's the biggest thing. And you know, keep
him going and just you know, try to talk to

(37:45):
him throughout the whole game and you know, just stay
in his ear and say, you know, you know, we're
gonna need you to make a big play soon, and
you know when that happens, you know we're gonna need you.
So you know, just biggest thing is just being patient
and uh, you know, waiting him, waiting for the ball
to come his way, because at the end of the day,
you know, defenses know that we're trying to get get
from the boss or they're going to game plan and
do what they can and try to stop that.

Speaker 9 (38:06):
Is there's something where your experience with them, I mean,
and going back to seven on seven in high school,
you know you've kind of been around him a long time.
Does that experience and trust a relationship, is that where
that helps when you're talking to him because you've built
up to the truth.

Speaker 7 (38:18):
I think so yeah. I mean if I would have
just met him this year, I probably wouldn't feel as comfortable,
you know, just saying that to him. But since our
relationship does go all the way back to high school,
I think, you know, I'm more comfortable talking to him
and stuff like that and kind of just you know,
trying to keep him calling, calling and time. So that's
top am looking forward, you know, staying focused on what's
it hitting with Russell getting back work his way and
taking second team direct Is that still hard to do or.

Speaker 8 (38:40):
Do you still trying to keep us?

Speaker 7 (38:41):
Nah? I mean, like I said, I'm blessed to be here.
So whatever my role is on the team, I'm going
to do it to the best of my ability and
work hard.

Speaker 4 (38:48):
What's your relationships like with with who Arthur Smith?

Speaker 1 (38:52):
Oh?

Speaker 7 (38:53):
Yeah, I mean he was great. You know, he's awesome.
You know, makes jokes, a lot of jokes that are
you know, funny. So but yeah, he's awesome, hard working,
of course smart, you know, he's very Uh, he's a
he's a great listener when it comes to you know,
listening to his players in terms of, you know, what
we like as quarterbacks, what concepts we like, and stuff

(39:13):
like that. So he's able to you know, adjust the offenses,
adjust the formations, adjust where we place people on the field,
to you know kind of get you know, release patterns
or you know, certain guys a ball and stuff like that. So,
I mean it's awesome working.

Speaker 3 (39:27):
Him with us.

Speaker 7 (39:29):
Uh. Nah, I gotta get that. You guys are weird.

Speaker 9 (39:33):
References like he dropped the cheesecake factory. Many reference with
us the Troop and show Napoleon Last one.

Speaker 7 (39:39):
I haven't heard the cheese cut cheesecake factory one. But
he definitely drops a lot of references. I think that's
his thing. So you know, sometimes I try to know
him and keep them keep him up since we're like
in different generations. You know, he might he might drop
an old one from from back in the day that
you know, some of the younger guys might not get.
But you know, he definitely drops a lot of references
for sure, for Justin Justin.

Speaker 14 (39:58):
It seems like every week is a different rank from
the run qbsun game.

Speaker 7 (40:02):
What are you liking about the ways that your devantage
of your mobilities? Yeah, I mean, you know, I mean
it's great. Uh, I think it you know, keeps the
defense on their toes instead of having to you know,
only guard you know, the patch game and team in
the run game. It's you know, they have to focus
on you know, me, nag, Jalen, CP, whoever's in the

(40:22):
game at that time. So, you know, I think it's
great that we incorporate that QP run game in there,
and you know, definitely having the defense you know, work
on that during the week. You know, it just gives
them less time to work on other things. So I
like it.

Speaker 4 (40:35):
If you're able to get you back this week?

Speaker 7 (40:37):
What does that do for a I mean, yeah, uh,
it's it's definitely a big, a big part of our offense.
You know, he's a great player all around. He's he's
great running the ball, pass bro great in the flat,
catch the ball out the backfield. So that'll be a huge,
a huge, uh part of our offense if we're able
to get them back to for sure with Ohio.

Speaker 4 (40:57):
State, this is forging match up at the Gem and canceled.

Speaker 7 (41:00):
Yeah, how do you feel about your buck eys going
into this matchup because last time the Ducks went into
the State and going So how do you think it's
a reverent Yeah, I mean, you know, I think we're
gonna get it back in blood. You know this this
this upcoming Saturday, and uh, you know, my guy Thomas Graham,
I know he's a big Orgon Duct fan, so you
know I'll be you know, tapping in with him during
the game and making sure I'm talking trash when they're

(41:22):
playing on Monday. You guys are seeing what Yeah, I
appreciate you guys. Think how much you were able to.

Speaker 19 (41:29):
Do this week and how are you Yeah, I was
able to do a lot more this week.

Speaker 7 (41:33):
You know.

Speaker 19 (41:33):
It was exciting to get back out there this week
so far and and be a full participant and do everything,
all the reps and everything else. So that was great,
and uh, we just got better from first day to day.
I felt even better, So that was a good thing.

Speaker 4 (41:45):
What are your expectations for Sunday?

Speaker 6 (41:47):
Your role?

Speaker 4 (41:47):
Where do you expect That's a big question.

Speaker 7 (41:50):
Uh, yeah, no, I think you know.

Speaker 19 (41:52):
For me, I'm I'm preparing my mind to get ready
to go and uh and everything else. So that's kind
of uh my my mentality and help us in whatever
that is. And so I'm just I'm just getting prepared
for a Friday.

Speaker 9 (42:04):
Just a lot of time during training camp doing the
doll in it the last couple of weeks.

Speaker 19 (42:08):
How much time do you need to get away up
to I've been getting on the reps. That's it's not
like I haven't been out there, you know. It's I've
gotten a lot of reps, you know, over all this
time and everything else. And I feel really confident with
our guys who we are. You gotta saw some of
the plays guys are making it. You know, just a
lot of good things, and so you know, I feel
colmi about that and I'm not worried about that part

(42:28):
of it.

Speaker 8 (42:29):
When you go to Mike and say hey, I'm back.

Speaker 15 (42:31):
Or excited the question, will you go to Mike when
you're fully back and say I'm back, Do you expect
him to come to you and tell you you back?

Speaker 8 (42:38):
Yeah? I think it's a group effort.

Speaker 19 (42:39):
I think obviously coach Tomlin and I Gabe, you know,
the trainer here, and he's done a great job, and
I think the doctors as well, you know, just communicating
with them and just but you know, I'm always wanting
to be on the field, that's for sure.

Speaker 7 (42:50):
You need extended work with the ones to do that though.

Speaker 19 (42:54):
Yeah, I mean I've got work with everybody, you know,
that's the good thing. Throwing all the different guys and
everything else and all the all the all the run
game stuff and all the checks and all that. So
feel feel good about it, Okay, I know, I know
we kind of like all that.

Speaker 8 (43:11):
Would you be limited in all pass almost?

Speaker 19 (43:16):
Yeah, I feel confident that I'd be ready to play
and play play at a high level. And uh, you know,
I think that's you know, I think we're being really
smart too, and trying to understand exactly how I feel.
It's my first week, you know, really back out there
with you guys, you know, when playing and all that stuff.
So I feel really confident about that. And you know,
the ball spinning, you know it's a good thing. And
uh so you know, I have no uh no doubt,

(43:38):
you know, you know in my mind, once I stepped
between the white lines, I probably ready to go.

Speaker 12 (43:42):
You talking about doing more, Going back to your first answer,
you talked about doing more. You're talking about volume during
the day back to back days were more in what capacity?

Speaker 4 (43:51):
Like we're doing practices.

Speaker 7 (43:52):
You asking if I've had more volume you mean.

Speaker 12 (43:55):
More volume or like you able to run a water
sloth in the plays with movement?

Speaker 19 (43:59):
Yeah, I think the biggest thing, to be honest with
you guys, just being able to run well and do
that well and and and move around well. I feel
like I've been able to do that this week. I've started,
you know, obviously run the past couple you know, week
week or so, and really the past couple of weeks
almost just you know a little bit by a little
bit every day, trying to be smart about it and
really let everything heal and do all that and so

(44:21):
you know, I got to be able to move around
some today, which I felt really confident in. That was
great to you know, feel and know and everything else.
And so it's a it's a process, you know, and
a process that I don't love in terms of just
having to go through what I've been gone through. But
also the same time, it's you get to figure out,
you know, your fortitude, you know, the mental fortitude and

(44:42):
also and also understanding that you can always lead in
different ways and everything else. I think that's really important
for us right now. You know this, it's an important
game for us for three and two. And you know,
we've got to focus on playing a really talented you know, uh,
you know Raiders team. You know, I've played these guys before.
They got a lot of talent, got a lot of
great players and everything else. Since we've got to be
ready to go and bring our a game. Have you

(45:02):
been able to go through the mental reps to where
you feel like, yeah, the mental reps and Arthur, Yeah,
the mental reps and the physical reps and all that too,
And so that's been that's been the great part.

Speaker 4 (45:11):
Have you eye You mentioned
