is to book your complimentary hearing evaluation and qualify for
the promo five hundred dollars off per device on the

(01:43):
is a great promo. I don't want you to miss
out as we're winding down the year. I feel like
it's one of the best that you have kat And
since we are talking about the signs of hearing loss
today and you know it just it should be top
of mind for people to get this scheduled.
Speaker 2 (01:59):
Yes, they need to get it scheduled. And for those
of you who are maybe wanting to do something before
the end of the year. You know, I have some
people wanting to get in because they want to get
treated before the holidays so they can enjoy the holidays.
Also people who are looking to use flex spending that's
going to maybe expire at the end of the year.
(02:22):
We do have availability and we also do same day fits.
So you know, sometimes people ask me, well, if I
decide to move forward, how long will it take? Well,
it just takes your decision. We are ready to roll
this time of year because we want to be able
to help people quickly if they're wanting to do something
(02:42):
for the holidays. So just don't think, hey, I kind
of waited to the last minute to hear a concept.
It's okay, we got to covered. So you know, of course,
the holidays are around the corner, and we're going to
be getting together with friends and family. You know, Christmas
is twelve days away, and then a week later we've
got New Year's and you know, I tend to spend
(03:05):
time with friends on New Year's having a good party,
put a sparkle on, and it's just a lot of
fun activities, you know, a lot of discussions again, gathering
around maybe a table for a good meal, watching football together.
A big thing in our household is playing cards and
(03:26):
board games. We want to be able to hear when
people are unwrapping those gifts, not only see what they've gotten,
but hear their reactions and you know, maybe even explaining
I don't have a lot of young people in my
life right now, So sometimes things need explaining you And
(03:47):
you know, so as you gather with friends and family
over the holidays and you notice maybe that they're having issues.
You just really need to understand what people risk by waiting,
meaning what happens when we put off treating hearing loss.
A good thing to know that people with hearing loss,
(04:07):
once they think that maybe they're having an issue, they
will wait about five to seven years before they visit
a hearing healthcare professional. And you know, this is really
one of the big reasons why we do listen and learn.
We need to get the word out to our community
that it's something that's better to be treated sooner as
(04:30):
opposed to later. So don't wait, don't put it off.
It's an easy process, and testing is always complementary here
and I think we're pretty friendly and it's an easy test.
It's an easy test. We're not you know, we're not
going to give you an ask, we're not going to
and as far as other health tests are concerned, you know,
(04:51):
we're not drawing blood or you know, this is simple,
simple stuff. And we also need to understand that hearing
loss been linked to other health concerns like diabetes, heart disease, dementia,
and depression. And it's important to know that untreated hearing
loss worsens over time. Hearing loss is not reversible, and
(05:17):
over time, with untreated hearing loss, you can lose some
of your word recognition, and if you don't use it,
you lose it. So when your brain becomes accustomed to
not fully processing words and sounds, it loses that ability
to do so. So we just really need to understand
(05:40):
the importance of treating hearing loss. And as we gather,
we're going to go over some signs of hearing loss.
So there are some things that you can recognize, maybe
when you're getting together with friends and family, or maybe
even not just recognizing and others, but also recognizing in yourself.
(06:01):
But let's just take a quick break and give that
phone number and promo and then we'll go over those
signs of hearing loss.
Speaker 1 (06:09):
Be happy to kat So. The phone number for Concept
by Iowa Hearing Centers is eight seven seven six three
two thirty six ninety Again eight seven seven six three
two thirty six ninety. Their website is Iowa Hearing dot com.
That's Iowa Hearing dot com. Either way, you can schedule
(06:30):
that complimentary hearing evaluation again free hearing screening, and when
you do it by one o'clock today, you qualify for
the promo. It's five hundred dollars off per device on
the Best Series package and twenty four months no interest
financing with approved credit. Again. If you call schedule that
(06:51):
appointment by one o'clock today, you will qualify for that.
You know, Kat, It was honestly during a Christmas gathering
when it became very clear to our family that our
mom was actually suffering from a hearing loss, and we
very gently talked to her about going into Concept and
(07:12):
she and my father ended up having you know, hearing
loss that's now being treated by Concept. And I can't
tell you how great it has been ever since getting
together for the holidays and knowing, you know, we we
don't have to talk to her back and have her
not know what's going on.
Speaker 2 (07:30):
That's great. And you know, it is always easy to
like compensate or get by if someone is looking directly
at you and up, but we all know that's not
how real life happens. You know, we don't have people
walking with us right in front of us.
Speaker 1 (07:49):
That's right.
Speaker 2 (07:49):
You know, life goes on and we can't expect people
to change or you know, our loss. So one of
the signs of hearing loss is actually tonightas because we
tend to lose those high frequencies first, and when that
(08:10):
starts to happen, Tonight's is a symptom of that high
frequency loss. Now, just because you have Tonight's does not
mean you have hearing loss. That's at the point where
it needs to be treated, but it also means that
you are probably starting to have some decline. So that
(08:31):
is really your first sign if you don't want to
listen to our guidelines. You know, we always recommend getting
that baseline at age forty and then every five years afterwards.
So if you're like, yeah, I'm not doing that, but
you are experiencing tonight as, it is time to come
(08:51):
in and get a hearing test. So you know, maybe
you yourself or someone one of your friends, you know,
they're complaining about tonight's. Just mention, Hey, I listened to
listen and learn every Saturday morning. Did you know that
tonight is can be a sign of hearing loss and
you probably should have your hearing check? Have you had
that done? You know, so that's a sign to come
(09:14):
in and get a hearing your hearing check. Another thing
is feeling like people are mumbling, or feeling like everything's muffled,
or that you feel kind of hollow, kind of that
just muffled feeling almost like you've flown in an airplane
(09:36):
and you're waiting for that pop or that clarity to happen.
And why people experience this is again because we typically
lose those high frequencies first, so we lose that clarity
in our k F, S, THH, e h G cont
(10:00):
it sounds. So it's not that we can't hear people,
but we just don't get that clarity and things start
to sound a little mushy or mumbly or muffly. So
that's another good sign that maybe you need to come
in and get your hearing checked. And as we're getting
together and gathering over the holidays, are you noticing that
(10:22):
someone is asking everybody to repeat themselves. It is always
harder to hear in groups and crowds, so that is
another sign that maybe there's an issue. Do you notice
maybe that there are some people who are not attending
your holiday gatherings that usually do attend are they avoiding
(10:46):
social situations because maybe they are having trouble with their
hearing and they don't want to feel embarrassed by misunderstanding
or asking people to repeat. And you know, we don't
want people to withdraw. People need to maintain their social
connections as a age. It's another important part of aging healthfully.
(11:10):
Along with hearing at normal levels, another sign might be
that you have listening fatigue. So those of you who
work full time and lucky to those of you who
are retired, but you know, you know a lot of times,
you know, you work a full day and you come
(11:30):
home and you're just kind of done, and I'm sure
everybody can resonate with then this is why I'm a
meal planner. People come to my house and they see
the list of meals for the week, because when I
get home at the end of the day, I can't
think what I'm going to make. I need to know
what I'm going to do well. The same thing can
kind of happen when people have hearing loss. They experience
(11:54):
listening fatigue. So if you are not hearing at a
normal level, you're focusing and concentrating to try and make
sense of what people are saying. And by the end
of the day you can be exhausted and irritable. So
you know kind of think. You know, if you're spending
(12:15):
more time in groups and crowds and you know, more
challenging hearing situations, if you're experiencing that kind of listening fatigue,
that's a sign to come in and get your hearing checked.
This is often a sign of hearing loss someone who
talks loudly. And I laugh at this because I am
(12:39):
a loud talker, but I also say this is because
it's an occupational hazard. It's because of everybody who I
work with on a daily basis, I always want to
make sure I'm projecting my voice, I'm keeping my chin up,
I'm making eye contact so we have that good communication.
(13:01):
But we all know that we all know a loud
talker and we all know a soft talker. But just
know that sometimes those loud talkers may have a hearing
issue because they cannot hear their own voice at a
normal level, so they they're talking louder. So you know,
(13:22):
if you know a loud talker in your life, you
might want to mention, hey, have you gotten your hearing
checked in the last five years? And of course, another
easy sign of hearing loss as we're going into other
people's homes or they're coming into our homes, is there
somebody who likes to listen to the TV or the
radio at a louder level than everyone else. And you know,
(13:45):
this is another thing that it doesn't happen overnight. No
one wakes up the next morning and decides, I'm going
to start listening to the TV volume at seventy five,
you know, when I previously listened to it at you know, fifteen.
You know, this can be a slow, gradual thing. And
if you have people who live alone, they don't notice
(14:06):
that creep up and volume, And then someone comes to
visit and they're like, yeah, I heard Wheel of Fortune
in the driveway. This may be a sign that that
person needs to have their hearing checked and it's an
easy thing to do. Just a reminder, we do have
multiple locations in Iowa. We have a clinic in Aimes Cedar, Rapids,
(14:29):
Clinton Coraville. Right here in Davenport. We're on the southwest
corner of East fifty third and Unica Ridge Road. Really close.
We're kind of sandwich between Necker's Jewelers and Texas Roadhouse.
Easy to find. We have a location in Grenello, Marshalltown, Oscaloosa, Pella,
(14:49):
Pleasant Hill which is East Moine, west of Moine and Waterloo.
So if you have people that you know across the state,
we have those multiple location since and testing is always complementary.
Speaker 1 (15:03):

(15:47):
Not only a great place to schedule, but also a

make sure you do that by one o'clock today so
that you qualify for that great Promolo or a hearing
instrument specialists with concept by Iowa Hearing Centers. It's always
such a joy to have you here, and especially this
time of the year when some of these you know,
(16:10):
hearing issues are going to pop up for us with
our family or friends.
Speaker 2 (16:14):
Yes, they are going to pop up or they're going
to be noticed, and you know, we want tips on
how you can handle it, how you can recognize it,
and also what can you do now, you know, before
someone has treated their loss. We want you to be
able to enjoy the holidays. We want, you know, everybody
(16:36):
to enjoy it as much as they can. So I'd
like to go over some communication tips for Christmas and
New Year's so you know what can we do. These
are very simple tips that will help your family or
friends communicate better over the holidays. So this is my
absolute favorite communication tip and this is something I use
(17:01):
on a daily basis, and that's address your loved one
or the person you're speaking to by their name before speaking. So,
you know, the holidays aside, let's just take a simple
everyday scenario. I live with my spouse. It's the two
(17:24):
of us in the home. We are empty nesters woo,
you know, but it's just the two of us every
day So you know, if I am in the kitchen
and my husband is in the living room and I
just blurt out out of the middle of nowhere and say,
(17:47):
are we going to the store today, He's probably going
to hear today and he's going to say what. In
a different scenario, if I say, Greg, pause, are we
going to the store today? More than likely he's going
to hear what I said, because hearing his name is
(18:08):
an attention getter. You know, maybe he's watching the news,
maybe he's reading the newspaper, maybe he's looking at his phone.
He's not aware that I'm going to start a conversation,
so it takes that minute to kind of shift on
what's happening in the room. And that's just a very
(18:29):
very easy thing to do. And this is true for
both those with the hearing loss and without a hearing loss.
Grab their attention beforehand so they can be prepared to listen.
This gives the listener time to turn in the direction
of the speaker so they can hear more clearly. They
can see body language and facial expressions, and these are
(18:53):
so important in communication, and it helps your loved one
get those kind of social cues and visit usual cues.
So when we're talking about the holidays, we're gathered around
a table, or we're at a New Year's party, you know,
before you initiate a conversation, just say Julie or you know,
(19:15):
Jill or whoever you're talking to, and then start your
conversation so that you have better flow and understanding of
what's going on. My absolutely favorite, and I think it's
so easy. Another thing that I recommend is when someone
asks you to repeat yourself, instead of repeating the exact
(19:36):
same thing, try rephrasing. Saying your sentence or words, or
saying your sentence with different words can give a little
extra background to help the listener, especially around a noisy
dinner table or party. Remember, the brain juggling hearing loss
(19:57):
has to work harder, so might be a slight delay
before they respond to you. By rephrasing, you give the
listener a moment to catch up and include them in
the conversation. Additionally, many people with hearing loss have trouble
hearing higher soft consonant sounds like th shsp, so expressing
(20:24):
yourself differently will give the person having trouble understanding some
additional context. And of course, as we age We don't
like to think about it, but it is natural to
have some cognitive decline. People often say if people would
only speak slower, and this is true. If people speak slower,
(20:46):
we have more time to process what people say. However,
we can't really control the cadence or loudness level of
how people speak. But you know, besides rephrasing, if you
know you're speaking with someone who has hearing issues, try
to be conscientious and thlow it down a little bit,
(21:10):
give a little bit more pauses in between words and
sentences and let them, you know, kind of process before
moving on to the next point. I hope these communications
will help everybody over the holidays, and I'm just gonna
have two quick more ones we can go over. But
(21:30):
I do want to pause. Give everybody that number so
that they can get an appointment and get in before
the holidays if they'd like to do so.
Speaker 1 (21:39):
I love that cat. Yes, the number four concept I
were hearing centers. If you have not written it down yet,
please this is your opportunity. Eight seven seven six three
two thirty six ninety. That's eight seven seven six three
two thirty six ninety. Their website is Iowa Hearing Dot
com that's Iowa Hearing dot com. You can use either
(22:03):
way to book that complimentary hearing evaluation with Concept by
Iowa Hearing Centers. Once you do that by one o'clock today,
then you're going to qualify to receive five hundred dollars
off per device on the Best Series package and twenty
four months no interest financing with approved credit. You just
(22:23):
have to get a hold of Concept by one o'clock
today to qualify for that promo. So don't delay. Make
sure you get on the phone or you get online,
and you get that scheduled today. Kat Klower is a
hearing instrument specialist with Concept, and she's been talking with us,
of course about signs of hearing loss, how we can
better communicate during these holidays, And you said you have
(22:46):
two more. I would love to hear them, Kat, Yeah.
Speaker 2 (22:49):
So these are some quick ones, and I think these
relate more specifically to the holidays as we're gathering in groups.
One tip is enhancing the room life. You know, if
we have the low lights, it is a nice ambiance,
but if you have somebody who has hearing issues, it's
harder for them to get those visual facial cues, body
(23:14):
language things, like that, so you know, you might want
to brighten the dimmer a little bit, or you know,
ad lights besides the candle light, whatever may help. The
other thing is if you have someone you know who
really struggles with their hearing and you want to have
(23:34):
a conversation with them, and you notice that they're really
struggling at the dinner table. Once dinner's over, pull them aside,
get them away from the noise, take them into another room,
kind of sit more one on one and have that
conversation so they don't feel left out, and you can
also enjoy their company and their time. These are just quick,
(23:57):
easy things to do. The most important way to ensure
holiday harmony is to be respectful and to have patients.
The holidays can also be the perfect time to genuinely
encourage your loved one to get their hearing tested, and
you know, committing to attending their appointment with them will
(24:19):
kind of put them at ease. It's an easy thing
to do. If your loved one is receptive to getting
their hearing evaluated, you know you may also want to
consider helping them with the gift of hearing, so you know,
attend their appointment, come get your hearing tested as well.
Take the pressure off them. It's an easy process. It
(24:41):
has been cold lately. We are stocked up with coffee,
hot cocoa, all the good stuff in the office to
keep you warm and cozy. Just pick up that phone
and give us a call.
Speaker 1 (24:54):
I have been through the hearing exams and I would
say too, it's it's actually a very pleasant experience. So
I recommend that you call Concept or get online and
book with them today. Iowa Hearing dot com is their website.
That's Iowa Hearing dot com. Or just pick up the
phone at eight seven seven six three two thirty six ninety.
(25:15):
That's eight seven seven six three two thirty six ninety.
Once you schedule by one o'clock today, get on the
phone or get online and contact them by one o'clock.
You will qualify for five hundred dollars off per device
on the best series package and twenty four months no
interest financing with approved credit. Oh. I just think that's
(25:37):
a marvelous promo, a great gift this time of the year.
Kat Klower, our hearing instrument specialist with Concept by Iowa
Hearing Centers. I want to thank you so much for
being here. It's going to make the holidays a whole
lot easier to get through knowing these tips.
Speaker 2 (25:52):
That's wonderful. I hope it helps everyone. And tune in
next week because we'll have our fun Christmas Listen and
Learn episode.
Speaker 1 (26:00):
Ooh, I love that one. All right, well, I'll be
here hopefully you will be too. And of course, Listen
and Learn is brought to you by Concept by Iowa
Hearing Centers on WOC
