(00:00):
On the phone today with Doctor Ike. Yes, Isaac Orion's on the phone
today. We are talking wy inStock, and of course doctor Ike,
you are part of Big Red Deluxe. How are you doing, man,
Welcome to the show. Oh,I'm doing great. How are you?
Paul? I am great? AndIsaac, it's been a while since you
and I had a chance to chat, and I'm looking forward to chatting today,
not only to talk about Weinstock andBig Red Deluxe, but also talk

(00:22):
a little bit. We're gonna talka little bit about the headliner on Saturday
night, the y Store, becauseyou have done stuff with them and been
part of listening to their music sinceall the way back in the nineties.
But let's first start with Weinstock.Obviously, you guys have kind of become
the featured act at weyan Stock, and boy, I'm happy for it.
With Big Red Deluxe, obviously, you're looking forward to the show. Oh

(00:45):
absolutely, Yeah. We look forwardevery year to doing that and we're grateful
to be a part of its kindof since the beginning. Now, some
people don't know I think about thehistory of Big Red Deluxe. Obviously,
you and Fritz, you've got somefriends, You've got to set a horns.
Talk a little bit about the band, how you guys got together,
what you guys do. Well, you know, we wanted to play music

(01:07):
that everybody knows. We were aband before with another keyboard player, Larry
Tale, who probably a lot ofpeople now, And we were a band
called Big Red Deluxe and I'm sorryRadio Flyer, Yeah, and we got
a cease and desist letter, sowe had to change the name of the
band. And about that time,Larry was ready to kind of bow out,

(01:27):
and so Bid Deluxe was born. And talk about the element of the
horns. Now, those guys areall friends of yours and you brought them
in after you got started, orwas that part of the beginning of everything
Now that came much later. Reallyjust kind of as one of those buget
list things that as musicians we alwayswanted to do. Everybody in the band

(01:52):
had always talked about how cool itwould be to play with a horn section.
So Fritz kind of set that inmotion. He knew some of the
guys that we play with, andwe play with a handful of different horn
players, and so we're fortunate toplay with these guys and it just took
everything to the next level and anytimewe get to play with them. We

(02:14):
don't play with them every show, but anytime we do it, it's exciting.
And we've been doing that for fiveor six years now. Well,
it really changes the dimension of ashow when you add horns, especially when
they're really talented, because they've you'vegot high brass, low brass. I
mean, you cover that and itjust changes it. And it also gives

(02:36):
you guys an opportunity to do alot more with rock music because it obviously
adds a lot more stuff when youlook at Earth, Wind and Fire in
Chicago, and then you probably takesome standards and throw horns to it as
well. Right, Oh absolutely,I mean it just opens up that songbook,
things that you couldn't even imagine doingwith a five piece band. Just

(03:00):
it just opens it up, blowsa wide open And I love the fact
that you guys play at Winstock thelast couple of years, including this year,
before the fireworks, so you reallyset it up, You get everybody
all set up, then the fireworksgo and it really makes for a wonderful
Friday night. And I know youguys enjoy playing it, but you guys
also have a lot of other gigsthis summer. Talk about some of the
other places you're going to be.Oh yeah, we're doing a lot of

(03:22):
festivals this year. And we're doinga broadwork festival in you Cyrus, and
we're doing the Saint Mary's Festival inKirby. Yep, We're doing the Kiff
and Heritage Festival, and we're playinga handful of other venues around Indian Lake
with places like that. So yeah, bed Penny, we just keep turning

(03:42):
up. So I love the KirbyFestival. Man. You want to talk
about a traditional church festival that Igrew up on in the Catholic Church,
and just it really is. Imean, they keep it going in Kirby
and it makes for a lot offun. So looking forward to that,
it's gonna be fun. It's atwine stock tickets or ten dollars. You
can get them at the door. That's the only place to get them.
And if you pay ten bucks onFriday, you're there all weekend. If
you pay ten bucks on Saturday night, you're there Saturday night. So it's

(04:05):
ten dollars whenever you arrive. Mostof the camping has sold out, but
there is primitive camping available winstock dotcom to check out all that stuff and
talk about some of the camping. Two days of live music June thirtieth,
which is Friday, and then Julyfirst and at the Windot County Fairgrounds.
It is the Windot County Music Festivaland Saturday night the featured band is the

(04:29):
Y Store and Isaac. I knowyou are very familiar with these guys.
My wife and I caught them lastweek and we're listening on YouTube. Very
folksy, very southern, just reallygood stuff. Man, talk a little
bit about those guys. Oh,they're fantastic. I first heard them when
I was in entire practice school outin Iowa and the King threw and I
was blown away. Started buying therejust immediately, and I've been listening to

(04:56):
them ever since. They're based outof Indianapolis. They were signed with MCA
Records. I'm actually privileged enough toknow the lead singer and head songwriter,
Chris Shaffer, and he's got oneof the most distinctive voices that I've ever
heard. And you want to talkabout stage presence, this guy is captivating.

(05:16):
My wife, I took her toIndianapolis once to see them. She
had never heard any of their musicor seen them, and after ten minutes
she couldn't take her eyes off ofthem to the point where we had to
leave them. Now, it's great, fantastic. I'm looking forward to it.

(05:39):
Yeah, I am too. They'regonna be great. And if there's
anybody that wonders what they sound like, I think they're tailor made for this
area. They're very roots rock, you know, along the John Mellencamp line
of music. I think everybody hereis going to really enjoy them. They're
great. You can find them, like I said we did on YouTube the

(05:59):
wife store, Why store, checkthem out, give them a listen.
I think four of their albums areup there and you can listen to them
on YouTube and enjoy that. Getto get familiar with them, because there's
gonna be about thirty other bands thatare gonna be playing in and around the
entire weekend at Weyinstock once again. You can get your details at wyenstock dot
com and get your tickets at thegate. When you come in, you'll

(06:20):
get that wrist band and you'll beready to go. And of course Friday
night, Big Red Deluxe is thefeatured band Saturday the y Store. But
like I said, a lot ofother bands around two stages, constant music.
Man, it's just a good time. Thanks for the kids to do
as well. And I'll tell youthat's cool doctor right, good time.
Thanks man, I appreciate you spendingsome time with us today. Oh thanks

(06:42):
Paul. Can't wait to see youthere. Absolutely, brother, talk to
you then.
