Speaker 1 (00:05):
Good evening.
Speaker 2 (00:06):
We are live from Elgin High School on the west
side of Marion for the premiere Optometry Countdown to kickoff
as we prepare for the Matthews Honta Actorate Game of
the Week featuring the Elgin Comets hosting the Waynesfield Goshen Tigers.
Alongside coach John couzioh I'm Eric Moseley. This season has
been an up and down year for both of these
squads that were predicted to be towards the top of
(00:28):
the Northwest Central Conference. But whoever wins this game tonight
will be in prime position to stay in the hunt
for a league title. So let me bring in Coach Cuzio.
Coach the Comets and Tigers. They both run a wing
t offense and have hard hitting defenses. This could look
like a game that you would have been coaching in
back in the day, doesn't it.
Speaker 1 (00:48):
Well, anytime somebody has a two back set, I really
love to watch him play. And you know, these guys
I've watched before the game, I was watching Waynsfield Goshen
to kind of get a feel of what they were like.
And they snap out of the huddle, run up to
the line of scrimmage. The huddle was about maybe three
yards and they snap up, they get down their stance
and they're going. They're not worried about changing the play
(01:11):
at the line of scrimmage and they're ready to go.
And I look for the Comets. They've got to get
off the snide, so to speak. They haven't scored in
two games. They're playing at home, they're homecoming. What a
great night. The temperature is perfect, the field conditions are perfect,
and I think Coach Winslow is going to have them
ready to play tonight. And I hope that you know,
(01:31):
Waynsfield Goshen is ready to accept the challenge. But I
think the Comets they looked ready.
Speaker 2 (01:37):
Yeah, the comments do look we're ready. Waynesfield Gooshen looks ready.
This is going to be a hard hitting affair tonight
and probably a pretty fast game with so much running
going on. But we won't go too fast here in
the countdown to kickoff, we will cover everything here. When
we come back from the break, you'll hear from Elgin
head coach Zach Winslow as he talks about this Waynesfield
(01:58):
Goosen team that they'll be facing. We'll give you, guys
a preview of the other games involving Marion County teams
and the rest of the leagues in the area, and
we will get you ready for the Matthews Hont Accurate
Game of the Week featuring Elgin and Waynesfield Goshen.
Speaker 1 (02:12):
So we'll take a break.
Speaker 2 (02:13):
When we come back, you will hear from Elgin head
coach Zach Winslow. You're listening to countdown to kickoff on
fourteen ninety WMRIN.

Join me right now is Elgin head coach Zach Winslow Coach,
a tough loss last week. A very bad weather game obviously,
but I know you're the type not to make excuses
for anything. What did you see out of your team
and what kind of maybe led to some of the
problems in that game.
Speaker 9 (04:18):
Well, I think the weather was definitely a factor, but
you know that goes both ways. You know, we both
had to play in it. But you know, I thought
our kids played really hard and it was a battle
for the first half. And then in the third quarter,
I think there's three or four minutes left and we
had three drives with three turnovers in a row, and
they were able to capitalize on all three drives you know,
(04:38):
with short fields, turn them into touchdowns. And then I
think the fourth drive we threw a pick six to
start the fourth quarter or something like that, you know,
right in that same timeframe. So it was, you know,
outside of a very short window of time, I felt
like we really really competed with Worthington Christian and they're
they're a very good athletic team that plays a really
tough schedule. So you know, we walked away with that.
(05:00):
The scoreboard, to me, didn't really show the story of
the game, but scoreboard don't lie, so it was a
tough one for sure.
Speaker 2 (05:06):
Did you feel pretty good though about the fact you
guys actually outgained him. Obviously you want to win, but
you still were able to do some things, especially with
the offense, in spite of the turnovers.
Speaker 9 (05:17):
Yeah, I mean there's I mean, there's a silver lining.
They were They were a really tough, physical team, and
we were able to move the ball on them pretty consistently.
We just couldn't finish. We couldn't get out of our way.
We'd get inside the red zone and either turn it
over or you know, have multiple penalties that would put
us back that we just you know, couldn't overcome and
would turn the ball over. But yeah, I mean, we
we worked hard. It was actually a pretty cool learning
(05:39):
experience for some of our guys because we had some
injuries and had some guys playing different positions, and you know,
after the game, you know, Saturday morning, you know, we're
doing our stuff here and some of them were coming
to be like coach, I know that that score looked
pretty rough, But we learned a lot and we we
believe we you know, like sometimes when you take a
(06:02):
hit like that on the scoreboard, the guy start doubting
you and they actually reaffirmed a lot of things because
we in game adjustments worked. We just couldn't finish, especially defensively,
you know, Worth than Christian had a all Ohio receiver
that has been there everything guy, and we held him
to I think less than forty or fifty yards total
offense and on film and going into the game, our
(06:23):
guys were pretty intimidated by him, you know just what
he was capable of. So to show him that what
we're doing works. We just got to not get in
our own way, not hurt ourselves.
Speaker 10 (06:33):
And everything will would or could work out.
Speaker 2 (06:36):
So and it's been a bit of a youth movement
this year with with your team. He had to replace
a lot of guys and a lot of the younger
kids have been stepping up. Coach Kuzy always says, you
get to this point of the season, a freshman's not freshman,
sophomore is not sophomore. Have you liked the progress you've
seen out of those younger guys are stepping up?
Speaker 9 (06:53):
Yeah, I mean, I just to put you back off
what I said earlier. So we had he's not a
young guy per se, but he's a first year football
player that's played a lot of safety for us. And
he come up and you know, I'm coaching the DBS
this year for the first time, which is obviously a
little bit of a change for me going from the
O line. But we were talking and you know, one
of our one of the ways we read in certain coverages,
(07:14):
you have to read read the offensive lineman to the quarterback,
So through the center to the quarterback is one of
the things we talk about for our free safeties. And
he came over about halfway through the game, through that
third quarter and came over to me and he's like, Coach,
I'm seeing.
Speaker 10 (07:30):
It like I didn't see it.
Speaker 9 (07:32):
I thought I saw it until now, and I'm really
seeing it like his reads and he's playing faster. So
you know, it's taken us five six games, like you said,
to get that maturity and that experience that a lot
of them didn't have, especially at a varsity speed against
good caliber teams. So we're definitely growing and working our way.
I would love us to clean stuff up and not
be so sloppy on the offensive side of the ball,
but we're getting better.
Speaker 2 (07:53):
So this point of the season, as opposed to where
you were at this time last year, is a little different.
But what have you seen that has made you pretty
confident at least going into this back half of the year.
Speaker 9 (08:05):
Well, we're definitely more battle tested, you know, starting out
when I think with what we started with three shutouts
at the beginning of last year and then rolled off
six wins, and you know, we were pretty confident, and
we knew Wayinsfield Gooshen last year was going to be
a huge test for us, and and Waynsfield Ghost In
last year was a lot like Worthington Christian.
Speaker 10 (08:22):
This year we battled.
Speaker 9 (08:23):
You know, it was a close game at half, and
then that end of the third and fourth corner of the
wheels kind of fell off and the score kind of
got out of hand. So I'm hoping that we've learned
that lesson a little bit earlier. You know, we've had
a couple of bat I don't say bad losses, but
tough losses. And you know, you learn from adversity, You
learned from from going through hard times, you know, and
(08:47):
through those hard times, our guys have never quit. Their efforts,
never waned, and I don't think that their belief has
ever waned. Execution still needs work, but they're buying into
what they're doing and they've been working hard every day.
Speaker 2 (08:59):
So let's talk about Waynsfield Goshen. They come into this
game four and two, but has had a couple bad
losses here recently once they got into league play. This
definitely is a game that the winner still has a
really good shot of winning at least a tie for
the league title. What do you make of this Waynsfield
Goosen team that you're facing this year.
Speaker 9 (09:20):
Yeah, they're not last year's team, but they're still really solid.
They're really physical upfront, and they've changed schemes up from
not being a spread team to being a wing te
based team. And there they're physical, they pound, they want
to get after you. So it's just I don't say
mirrors us, but they have a lot of the same
values that we have. So this should be a really physical,
fun game. Now, they've lost two games this year, and
(09:41):
you know, one by one point and one by two
points and triple overtime, so they could very easily be
six and zero as they are four and two. You know,
you asked me about last year and the crazy thing,
and I told these guys this this year and last year,
we're still at the very same point and we have
to win out if we want to be if we
(10:03):
want a chance to be league champs. And we were
the same place last year, only we were coming in
this game six and zero instead of three and three.
But if we finished the season seven and three, we're
still league champs. We finished this week one and oh,
we got a chance to be league champs. And that's
kind of what our our motto has been all week.
You know, one to oher working to fourno.
Speaker 2 (10:21):
So do you feel like with with a team that
has become battle tested and gotten more experiences the season's
gone on, this facing this backloaded schedule that you have
where you're facing the top teams, do you look at
it as a little bit differently now, Like, Okay, these
guys they know a lot more. They seem to be
more ready for this type of competition.
Speaker 10 (10:43):
I hope.
Speaker 9 (10:43):
So, I mean that's what I'm I'm hoping that we
can do. I mean, you got to We've been in
tough games and we you know, so far we have
not come out on the other side.
Speaker 10 (10:53):
But you know, if you.
Speaker 9 (10:56):
Soft, schedules make you soft, you know what I mean.
So we have not played us off schedule. Maybe it's
not what we thought where we thought we would be
coming into the season. But you know, like we said,
we're battle tested, and some of that's by our own
doing putting ourselves in adverts positions. But we've still been
in those positions and we've battled out of them, maybe
not to get some wins sometimes, but I think our
(11:17):
kids are emotionally unafraid to be in a tough spot,
if that makes sense.
Speaker 1 (11:22):
Well, coach, thanks for taking the time and good luck tonight.
Speaker 9 (11:25):
Thanks.
Speaker 11 (11:26):

Dog Trainer Rob Lust from the Edgefield and Animal Care

Speaker 12 (11:35):
Please are more of an issue in the fall of
the year because they're very dependent on the environmental conditions
for their life cycle. Their life cycle can go, I mean,
can be as quick as five days or as long
as two to three months, all dependent upon the environmental conditions.
(11:57):
They require moisture just like everything else, and temperature and
all this other stuff. So it's important to keep from
having a problem with please is to understand their life
cycle and how you can kind of combat it at
certain points within the life cycle.

Speaker 10 (14:43):
And one of the things that that.
Speaker 1 (14:46):
We talked about is the fact they've got to corral
the quarterback.
Speaker 10 (14:49):
There's no question about it. He's he's he's.
Speaker 1 (14:51):
A Miller's He's a fine quarterback on Ohio State as
a receiver, and that's one of the things he did
was run the football and he pretty much beat River
Valley single hand. He's going to beat him more running
the ball that he is passing, and Pleasant's got their
work cut out for him. But they're playing at home,
it's homecoming, and I'm sure they're going to be up
for the.
Speaker 2 (15:11):
Game, absolutely, and I know Elgin here is going to
be up for this game against Waynsfield Goshen, especially at
mean homecoming. But this is a big matchup anyways, between
two of the better teams in the Northwest Central Conference.

Back here at Elgin High School, countdown to kickoff as
the band just finished playing the Elgin alma Mater, which
means a little bit for me and coach because we
used to hear that all the time.
Speaker 10 (20:24):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (20:24):
I didn't go to school here, but I spent quite
a bit of time here. Yeah and yeah, it brings
back a lot of memories. It's great to be back
here at Elgin Fields. In great shape, the band's out
there looking good, the cheerleaders have head homecoming. Wow, what
could you ask for? Friday night football in Marion County?
And we're really glad to be here.
Speaker 2 (20:46):
Absolutely, and it's Alumni band night as well, so some
former band members also taking part. And it's just a
really good atmosphere, a really great crowd. I want to
throw it down to Scott real quick, and he's right
down there in front of the crowd around him. What
are you seeing down there, Scott?
Speaker 22 (21:02):
So people were excited for the game, absolutely, and then
the conditions are much better than last week's hurricane. That
after the new Traiza formote teams right around the area,
but everyone had the same conditions and you know, talking
about the game, talking with coach Winslow this week, he
told me the conditions and it hurt so much of
the turnovers that has been given away in the three
(21:23):
games they've lost this year.
Speaker 23 (21:24):
He pointed that they've had.
Speaker 22 (21:25):
Three or more turnovers each game and that's something they
have look to fix this week. We're especially working on
the center to quarterback snap. Coach said he also respects
the Tigers and there even though they have new leadership,
there's still a two time defending camps and College was
still trying to contend for a shot, as you heard
coach wins Will say on a pregame. And lastly, he
(21:45):
emphasized the importance of the common defensive line to disrupt
a tiger rushing offense, which can be explosive. So, guys,
this kind of seems like a measuring stick kind of
game for these teams.
Speaker 10 (21:56):
You know.
Speaker 1 (21:57):
Yeah, those are the kind of games you really need
as a coach. You got a little pressure on yourself
because you want to get your kids in position. It
seems like an equally matched team and both teams and
so we're looking for that kind of a football game tonight,
Yes we are.
Speaker 2 (22:12):
And it's two teams that, as we said, they both
run the wing t which is not offense that you
see run a lot anymore. So we really expect a
lot of ground and pound, but we also know both
defenses like to hit hard. I would expect a very
hard hitting game. You hope everybody stays healthy throughout the game.
(22:32):
But this is one of those games if you're just
into old school football, this is one of those games
that you're gonna love.
Speaker 1 (22:37):
Yeah, And if I was a betting man, I'd almost
say the game is going to be over about nine o'clock.
You know, I'm thinking maybe eight thirty five even I
don't know, Scott, I mean, do you do you think
this game is gonna be over pretty quick.
Speaker 22 (22:51):
I said about eight fifty two or eight forty two.
I can't remember the exact time. But here's the thing, though,
what if I win, I'm still gonna get more than
my bonus pay for being on sideline last week the hurricane.
I got my check, Guys, I got my check, and
for hazard pay it was still said zero. Because we
know that anything time zero is still zero. I don't
understand more.
Speaker 2 (23:12):
Well, you know, I don't have any explanation for that
other than we really appreciate your service, Scott.
Speaker 10 (23:19):
You're welcome, all right.
Speaker 2 (23:21):
Well, tonight is great weather and we're really glad that
it is Waynsfield Goshen coming out to the field right now.
Not a big team numbers wise, but again, like we've said,
the defending champs, two time defending champions of the Northwest
Central Conference, and their two losses this season were by
one point in each one. So this is a team
(23:42):
that's still very dangerous.
Speaker 10 (23:44):
Yeah, there's no question about it.
Speaker 1 (23:45):
And you know, before we go on, i'd like to
I mentioned the coach Winslow. I sent him a good

out on the football field, and it's just a great heat.
You know, all the thing that he used to say,
it ain't tagged, It ain't tag You got to come
out hit and then you got to play. It's blocking
and tackling, and that's a pretty simple game. And I
think tonight both teams are going to try to stick
to that, keep it on the ground and made the
best team win.
Speaker 2 (24:26):
Absolutely. So we're going to take one more break as
the comments do come out on the field to a
loud roar from the crowd because this is a packed
house here, we'll go ahead and take a break. When
we come back, we'll be just about time for kickoff
here at Elgin High School. You're listening to high school

Welcome back to Elgin High School for to nights Matthews
Honte Akra High School Game of the Week. Elgin hosting Waynesfield,
Goshen and Northwest Central Conference Action teams are on the
field getting ready for the opening kickoff, and the weather
is just absolutely gorgeous. The reflection of the sunset just
(28:19):
coming across from behind us. And the facilities. We get
to go into a lot of good facilities here in
Marion County, and Elgin ranks right up there.
Speaker 10 (28:27):
Yeah, you know.
Speaker 1 (28:28):
The school is well, it's probably ten years old or
so and still looks great. The lands scaping is all green.
After the real dry summer, the rains we've had the
last week and a half two weeks has really brought
everything back and it's real vibrant right now.
Speaker 10 (28:48):
Perfect night for football.
Speaker 1 (28:50):
If you're driving around and you see lights somewhere in
Marion County, it's probably because there's a football game. Instead
of going home maybe watching TV, go turn into the
parking lot and watch these kids play. They're gonna put
their hearts and souls into the game tonight for both teams,
and we're out here at Elgin. It's really gonna be
(29:10):
fun to see them play and hopefully they farewell over
Waynesville Goshen.
Speaker 2 (29:15):
Three Marion County teams playing at home tonight alongside Elgin,
Pleasant and Herding both playing at home tonight. All three
are homecoming games. Game time temperature tonight seventy four degrees
perfect weather. Waynsfield Goshen is in all white uniforms, yellow
letters and numbers, yellow helmets with a blue logo on
(29:39):
the sides. Elgin in their red jerseys with gray letters
and numbers, gray piping on the sleeves, white pants, and
their silver helmets with comets on each side. And Elgin
will be kicking off to start the game back to
receive for Waynsfield Goshen. This is why I hate about
(30:01):
white jerseys with light number five.
Speaker 10 (30:03):
It's like number five eric one.
Speaker 2 (30:04):
So number five would be Grant Brittigham and looks like
it's coming down to him. He takes it at the
twenty five up to the thirty and a hard hit
down at about the thirty four yard line.
Speaker 1 (30:17):
Coach, why don't you give us some storry lineup Chase
Killum on the tackle. Well, we've got the defense for
the comments. We got middle to the defensive back Lust
defensive back, Harrison linebacker, Rhodes linebacker, Van Gundy defensive line
Rosebrow Brow defensive.
Speaker 10 (30:36):
Back Colton Long.
Speaker 1 (30:37):
The guy we had over at Ralphie's very fine young
man playing defensive end. We really enjoyed talking to him.
Jack Van Gundy and Landon Shepherd in the middle. He
was also over at Ralphie's hand off straight ahead and
knees stuff calling his name right there, Carson Barnes with
the carry. Yeah, landon Shepherd and I can't I think
Van Gundy was in there to help him. But one
(30:59):
of the things that he did, and I talked to
him Wednesday, and one of the things that I noticed
when he makes a tackle, it's the the running back
is always going back on his back, so he's got
good acceleration from his hips and boy just really hit
a pretty good shot.
Speaker 10 (31:16):
He came to play tonight.
Speaker 2 (31:17):
Jase Kaufman, the quarterback for the Tigers. Second down to eleven,
now a sweet play goes to Brettingham and he gets.
Speaker 1 (31:24):
Up ahead for a couple but it's tackled right away.
Third and long. Yeah, it looks like he's going to
be busy tonight. That Shepherd again on the tackle going
off tackle comets are going looks like about a six
man line against a kind of a mirror image of
their own offense, and looks like Van Gundy. Shepherd's gonna
be uncovered and he's going to probably be in a
(31:45):
lot of tackles tonight playing in the middle.
Speaker 2 (31:47):
Two backs in the backfield, two slots on the right,
rollout throwback and that's almost it is intercepted.
Speaker 10 (31:56):
Wow, what a play.
Speaker 1 (31:58):
It was tipped by pressure by Shepherd and it looks
like Brown number sixty six, And what a tip to himself, Eric,
That was one of the finest plays, especially for a
defensive lineman. What hands and he sets the comments up
right now in great field position.
Speaker 2 (32:16):
So Drew Brown. They tried to run a throwback screen.
Brown able to get his hands up, and if he
hadn't had to tip it to himself to get it,
he might have been able to take off. He did
take a hard hit, but he bounced right back up.
So the Comets take over first and ten at the
goat Waynesville Goshen twenty nine yard line and off sides
(32:41):
already as Zach Bauer's sophomore quarterback was up under center.
So so now the Tigers moving back five more yards.
It's just not starting off very good for Waynsville Goshen.
Speaker 1 (32:53):
Well, we talk about a field trip versus a business trip.
Waynsfield Goshen right now seems to be like on a
field trip because the comments mean business.
Speaker 10 (33:02):
Right now, they're knocking on the door. Ten forty eight
to go, no score.
Speaker 1 (33:06):
But you can just tell the intensity the way they're
playing right now, some pretty hard hits on defense and
then coughing the ball up and a tip tip to
himself by Brown, and the Comets get a free five
yards second first down and five.
Speaker 2 (33:21):
So up under center burs he hands it off straight ahead.
That is Jack van Gundy.
Speaker 10 (33:31):
Yeah, he's he's a steady back for the Comets. Nothing fancy.
Speaker 1 (33:35):
He's just gonna try to find a little bit of
a seam and if it isn't there, he's gonna be
his own blocker and picked up about four and a
half yards, it's gonna be second and like less than
what six inches?
Speaker 2 (33:47):
Yeah, second down in short for the Comets, and so
comments up to the line. One back in the backfield,
and that is just a quarterback sneak and he is
going and he's getting pushed ahead for about a I'd
say a six yard game plenty for the Matthews Hontakra
(34:08):
first down, and that was Zach Bauers with Kerry.
Speaker 1 (34:11):
Yeah, rugby scrum quarterback sneak for the first down. Comitts
do a really good job of that. And now.
Speaker 2 (34:22):
A whistle as the play was being run. No flag
on the field. I'm not sure what that was for.
Speaker 1 (34:34):
Well Comets offense. You got Newman receiver, Bowers, quarterback Lust, Harrison, Roads, Helms,
Van Gundy, Skagg, Shepherd, Phillips, Lowry and Brown. That's the
lineup for the Comets on offense right now, all the
momentum in their favor, playing at home tonight.
Speaker 2 (34:54):
So first and ten at the Goshen fourteen yard line.
A little sweep there goes to Gavin Rhoades to the
left side and he gets about two yards.
Speaker 1 (35:06):
Second down. Yeah, that Scott just mentioned that the comments
threw a towel and actually threw it on the Defensi's side,
So that, okay, that makes sense. Way to go, Scott,
good catch right there, buddy, and he gives us the
thumbs up from the sideline. I'll tell you he's he's
(35:26):
got it soft tonight, well compared to last week.
Speaker 10 (35:31):
I mean, he's not going to have to act.
Speaker 2 (35:33):
Second down and nine, a little counterplay and picked up
well by Goshen. That was national Lust. I believe it
might be Roads or Roads. Gavin Roads on the carry
brings up a third and long.
Speaker 1 (35:47):
Yeah, they like to run that little counter with Rhodes.
He does a really nice job so far. Harrison, who's
been there big back all year, hasn't really toted it yet. Yeah,
it hasn't carried the ball yet at all. This is
a down and distance. Comments don't like to be in
third and long, but I'm sure they're in four down territory.
(36:10):
Eight fourteen left in the first no score.
Speaker 10 (36:16):
Looks like they went unbalanced to the We went.
Speaker 2 (36:18):
To Harrison on a pitch to the left side and
he picks up quite a bit. I'd say about six yards,
brings up fourth down.
Speaker 1 (36:27):
Yeah, Coach Winso is gonna really like that formation because
they took the tackle and went clear on the other
side and made an unbalanced set and Waynesfield did not
adjust to it.
Speaker 10 (36:39):
So I look for him to come back, maybe even
this play.
Speaker 2 (36:43):
So let's actually call it about a five yard game,
so it will be fourth down and six. I guess
that was only a four yard game. I thought it
was a lot more than that. So not the easiest distance,
but we'll see what the comments come up with. As
they walk up to the line of scrimmage at the
ten yard line, hand off to Harrison, he goes straight
(37:07):
ahead and gets close.
Speaker 1 (37:10):
I don't know if they're gonna put him there or not.
Speaker 10 (37:12):
Well, i'll tell you what.
Speaker 1 (37:13):
They've got a good line surgeon push and it's gonna
be looks like they're gonna they're gonna measure measure it.
Speaker 28 (37:20):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (37:20):
I think they're gonna really like that formation, especially running
to that left side.
Speaker 2 (37:25):
Eric, Yeah, it looks like on that left side they're
getting quite a push. So Harrison with the carry, and
he's the the main back in this offense. Scott's saying
it looks short from where he's at.
Speaker 1 (37:45):
Well, last last week, we had a strange situation where
the ball it seemed like the ball was marked and
they called it first down by maybe just the tip
of the ball. But that's all it matters.
Speaker 2 (37:59):
It's a Matt He's hunt actor of first and goal
from the five yard line.
Speaker 10 (38:03):
Well, I was just talking. They set the ball.
Speaker 1 (38:08):
Behind the line, but the down and distance marker was
on the other side of the line. But yet they
signaled first down and River Valley didn't even have to
get a measurement because they just want ahead the signal
first down.
Speaker 10 (38:22):
I thought it was a little bit quick.
Speaker 2 (38:25):
Harrison on the counter to the left side and he's
at the end zone. He is in touchdown Elgin.
Speaker 10 (38:30):
Yeah, Harrison was not going to be stopped on that play.
You could tell he's got.
Speaker 1 (38:33):
Thresh legs telling me about his second or third carry
and he was not going to be denied tonight, six
forty three to go, they're up six, and they look
like they are playing a lot crisper and sharper, and
that's a big relief. They haven't scored in a couple
of games, and you know, Waynsfield better tie it on
because I think the Commets are really working hard and
(38:54):
playing with a lot of energy tonight.
Speaker 2 (38:56):
So five yard touchdown run there by Quentin Harrison makes
the score six to nothing, Elgin on top here with
six forty three left in the first Elgin going for
the two point conversion. Hand off goes to the right side,
but no good that was to Jack Van Gundy.
Speaker 1 (39:15):
So that's where we are at.
Speaker 2 (39:18):
First score of the first quarter goes to Elgin on
a five yard run by Quentin Harrison. Gives Elgin a
six nothing lead here in the first You're listening to

The Matthews Honda Acura High School Game of the Week.
Speaker 2 (40:42):
Eric Mosley with coach Dohn Kuzio Scott Cameron on the
sideline as Elgin kicks off and not a very long kick.
I think they were actually trying to squib it a
little bit, maybe a pop up kick to try to
get a turnover quickly. Wainsfield Goshen does get it taken
over at the thirty five.
Speaker 1 (41:00):
Yeah, that series right there doesn't go without the blocking
of Skag Shepherd, Phillips, Lowry and Brown on the offensive
line for the.
Speaker 2 (41:08):
Comments run to the right side and not much going
on there.
Speaker 10 (41:15):
That was.
Speaker 1 (41:18):
Brettingham on that one. Maybe again of three. I think
Harrison was in on that, maybe Shepherd. These guys are
really and when the ball carriers are carrying the ball
for Waynsfield Goshen, they're paying the price.
Speaker 2 (41:31):
We knew it would be hard hitting in Goshen's defense.
Gave up a couple plays, but they were very tough
as well. Second down and eight and hand off to
the left side, tackled right away. That's Brettingham again.
Speaker 10 (41:46):
There's Shepherd underneath the pile.
Speaker 1 (41:48):
There's thirty two Colton Long, our guy that we talked
to at Ralphie's fine young man. He's played defensive end
five to seven, one sixty five. He got under it
all and I believe the sixty six the interception. Drew
Brown looked like he was also in on that.
Speaker 10 (42:03):
On this side.
Speaker 2 (42:04):
So the Elgin defense, not that we would doubt it,
but they came to play tonight, no doubts about it.
Third down and six, back to pass is Kaufman. Now
he throws it out and almost another interception.
Speaker 1 (42:20):
There's long there on the pressure with Shepherd putting a
hit on the quarterback just as he was releasing it.
Good clean hit and almost like you say, intercepted. Ball
was overthrown as he was hitting the chest. And now
Waynsfield Goshen is forced to punt.
Speaker 2 (42:37):
That pass was intended for Griffin Styles. So back to
punt is Waynsfield Goshen. To receive for Elgin is Quentin Harrison,
and that's just a short kick down at the Elgin
(42:57):
forty four yard lines. Waynesville Goshen just not having much
success with anything right now.
Speaker 1 (43:04):
No, right now in the momentum was with the Comets,
and you know, if they get the ball, they're getting
the ball here. If they can get something going again
and get a push, I think coach will probably stay
with that left side unbalanced and just probably give it
to Harris center Roads and keep it, keep it simple.
Speaker 2 (43:20):
You know, one thing to mention, the wing t offense
has been a part of Elgin here for quite a
few seasons in a row. This is the first season
that Waynesville Goshen has run a wing tea with a
new coach coming in Chris Summers. They had run spread
before this. Even this, at this point in the season,
sometimes it's still hard to get it all down.
Speaker 1 (43:39):
Well, I think right now, looking at both teams, I
think the Comets seem to be a little bit stronger physically,
and when you're running the football, that's a definite plus four.
Speaker 2 (43:48):
Swing pass to the outside that's complete to Nash Lust
up ahead across the fifty to the opposing forty three
yard line. Nice gain of about eight there for the comics.
You have some good blocking out there on the outside.
Speaker 1 (44:02):
You know, Shepherd was out there again, couldn't pick up
the number of the other guy, but there were two
guys out there leading the way. Nash Lust doing a
good job of picking up a block and picking up
a big gain on first down.
Speaker 2 (44:16):
Second down and two comments up at the line of scrimmage,
hand off straight ahead to Van Gundy and I think
he's got the Matthews Hondager first down at the forty
five yard line.
Speaker 1 (44:31):
Yeah, Van Gundy's gonna run with two hands on the football.
I think they had what five turnovers last week, so
he probably was told. I don't know if he was
the one that fumbled or who was, but I'm sure
the backs and receivers and quarterbacks were told, you know,
carry a football around all day long, and we got
to get some things corrected. Four fifty six to go.
If you're just tuning in, comments are up six.
Speaker 2 (44:55):
So ball is at the tiger forty five yard line.
Swing pass out to the outside again, complete to Harrison
and he doesn't go very far.
Speaker 1 (45:06):
Yeah, real nice tackle, basically just stopped him. Still made
Brady Miller for Waynsfield did a nice job of putting
a hit on Harrison and riding him out of bounds
for pretty much no game.
Speaker 2 (45:19):
Now, coach, were you one of those coaches if you
had a guy or a couple guys that you know
constantly fumbled in a game, did you make them carry
a football around class every day?
Speaker 19 (45:29):
No?
Speaker 10 (45:29):
I didn't. I don't know if I did that or not.
Speaker 1 (45:32):
Some people may say I did do that, but I
did make him sleep with the football.
Speaker 2 (45:37):
There you go, There you go, second down and ten
and off goes to Harrison and he cuts it back
up the middle after going right and has a nice game.
Speaker 1 (45:49):
Of about four third down. Yeah, at that time, they
loaded the right side up and they're gonna run Harrison
to the right side right in front of the common bench,
and you could pretty much tell what their game plan is.
Speaker 10 (45:58):
We're gonna try to wear you.
Speaker 1 (45:59):
Don Waynesfield's got a lot of guys going both ways.
They only have twenty six kids on their roster, so
they're gonna play the uh the battle of attrition tonight
and see if they can wear Waynesfield down. So far,
they're doing a good job of it.
Speaker 2 (46:15):
Comments up to the line of scrimmage, Bowers hands it
off on the counter boy tackled right away. That was
Gavin Rose and he was taken down by two tigers.
Speaker 1 (46:26):
Yeah, real find looks like number fifty two Troy Spencer.
Nice played by him. He was not fooled by the counterplay,
and Commets are forced to punt with about a fourth
and six three.
Speaker 2 (46:40):
H five left in the first period. Elgin on top
six to nothing here for homecoming. Harrison back to punt,
gets a snap, good snap. Now he's running in. I
think it's just going he's deciding if he's gonna kick it.
Now he's taken off. Boy, you just he gave Waynsfield
goosh in decent field position.
Speaker 1 (47:02):
I get it.
Speaker 2 (47:03):
He's trying to make a decision, but they came in
hard on that one. And that's one of those newer
style football calls where you have the punter, if he's athletic,
have him roll out and do a soccer style punt,
but he can decide if he wants to run at
that time.
Speaker 1 (47:19):
Just not the right decision. Well, I think it's one
of those things where coach Winslow has a lot of
confidences in his defense because Wayne's Field hasn't really done anything.
They just didn't want to give the ball back at all.
And we'll see if it pays off for Waynsfield for
them to do that, for Comments to do that and
make that mistake comments or excuse me, Tigers right up
(47:40):
the line, scrimmage handoff to the left side, up across
the fifty to the forty five forty breaking away down
to the opposing thirty five yard line. And that's Gage
Stinky with the carry. Say that name a few times.
That's a fun name. Rhodes did a nice of a
ridey mout of bounds, but the young man picked up
(48:04):
big chunks of yardage some pretty good downfield blocks which
enabled him to do that. And right now, that gamble
by the comments is paying off. Let's see if it
pays off for points for Waynesfield.
Speaker 2 (48:17):
Hand off straight ahead and stacked up right away he
does dive forward. I believe that was Carson Barnes on
the Matthews Honaker first down carry.
Speaker 10 (48:26):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (48:26):
Drew Brown, who made the interception number sixty six, was
in under there. Looks like Van Gundy forty five. These
guys are steady. I'll tell you I've really I'm really
impressed with Brown the way he's.
Speaker 10 (48:37):
Come on this year for the comments. He's playing with
a lot of emotion tonight.
Speaker 1 (48:41):
Eric, let's go down to Scott real quick.
Speaker 22 (48:43):
Scott, Yeah, you know, talk about bonus possessions that Elgin
had right from the get go. Yeah, then had that
fake punt. That's it's as good as a turnover in
the book. You know, a lot of the Waynsfield Goshen players,
especially their linemen, they got their hands on their hips already.
Speaker 10 (49:00):
You guys.
Speaker 2 (49:01):
Thanks Scott, carry straight ahead. I believe that was Barnes
again carry of about two and one. Thing I noticed
with the way Goshen runs this this wing tea as
opposed to Elgin, and maybe it'll change as the game
goes on. Waynsfield really very much just wide sweeps when
they go to the outside or straight ahead carries. Elgin
(49:23):
likes to do counter a lot of guys going misdirection.
Speaker 1 (49:26):
Yeah, they it's pretty much like a power play too,
with the way they load it up and have some
lead blockers up front, and they like they really like
that with Harris, and they did that in that pretty
much this hole for first quarter. And like you say,
they do like to run that little counter on the inside.
Speaker 2 (49:43):
So that time a carry by Brettingham to the right
side does pick up a couple, but it brings it
up fourth and three. So Waynsfield going for it now
into Elgin territory. Under a minute left in this first period.
Elgin up six to nothing.
Speaker 1 (50:00):
As we said in the beginning of this game, it's
only seven to twenty in this first quarter. Is pretty
much coming to an end.
Speaker 2 (50:05):
Handoff sweep to the left side and there is a
big tackle.
Speaker 1 (50:09):
In the backfield. Guess who shepherd I'll tell you what
he came to play tonight. He was a young man over.
Speaker 10 (50:15):
At Ralfie's on Wednesday night.
Speaker 1 (50:17):
Gave up some time to come over and visit with us,
and very respectful and just we had a really good
time with him talking to him on the radio, and
I'll tell you what he's been in on pretty much.
I'd say ninety percent of the defensive plays tonight. Goshen
had a chance there. They had a drive going, but
that time Elgin able to lock it down there for
(50:39):
the stop and Elgin takes over forty four seconds left
in the first period, first and ten at their own
thirty two yard line. They haven't put the ball down
yet there. It is so Elgin able to get another
possession here. Well, the gamble really Waynsfield. Goshen could not
(51:00):
appitalize on comets basically turnover by the fake punt. But
now Elgin's got the ball, let's see if they can
get something going offensively.
Speaker 2 (51:09):
Harrison on the pitch to the right picks up a
couple yards. They overloaded that right side on the line
and also two wide receivers on that side. You kind
of knew where they were going.
Speaker 1 (51:21):
Yeah, for Goshen. Rody Roberts was in on the tackle
coming to the outside. A lot of these guys are
going both ways. So let's see what this second quarter
is gonna bring Eric whether or not Waynsfield can hold
up to the offensive line play of the Comets.
Speaker 2 (51:37):
So Elgin's gonna let the first quarter clock run down,
and that's how we will end the first period. Elgend
up six to nothing. Here the Matthews Hondaker a high
school game of the week. We'll take a break. When
we come back, we'll have the start of the second period.

The Matthews Honda Acura High School Game of the Week.
Speaker 2 (53:00):
Here at Elgin High School started the second period, elgind
up six to nothing over Waynsfield Goshen.
Speaker 1 (53:06):
Now a handoff.
Speaker 2 (53:07):
Straight or over to the right, over the forty and
down at the forty two yard line, forty three yard line.
That's Harrison. That looked like a double handoff.
Speaker 10 (53:20):
Coach.
Speaker 1 (53:21):
Yeah, and I'll tell you what. You kind of watch
the beginning of the first part of the game here
in the first quarter. Now we're in the second quarter,
and wouldn't you say that Harrison looks like the best
back on the field and he's really running that time
he kind of did a hurdle over a young man
who's coming up to make a tackle and or a
body laying on the field looks like they'll be third
(53:41):
and inches.
Speaker 2 (53:42):
Yeah, very short. Elgind up to the ball and hand
off to Van Gundy. He does get tackled or tripped
up in the backfield, but he dives ahead for the
Matthews hont Actor first down at the forty four yard line.
Speaker 1 (53:57):
Yeah, young man for Wayne's field. I think number five
was then on a kind of an ankle tackle. Bet
to gam I believe Grant bet the gam and I
probably butchered that name up, but Ben Gundy kept his
feet second halfter first down. Now Harrison goes up the
middle for a nice little game.
Speaker 2 (54:17):
There's a little counterplay there to Harrison, looks like a
gain of about three second down for the comments. They're
right up to the lion of scrimmage. Zach Bauers, the
sophomore quarterback, brings him up up under center. Harrison comes
around in motion, takes it and kind of stumbles forward.
Speaker 1 (54:35):
He might have gotten about a yard, but not much.
Speaker 2 (54:38):
It looked like Waynsfield Goshen's line just kind of went
lower than Elgin. We're able to kind of stop that up,
and now Elgin right back up to the line of
scrimmage for third down. They're not wasting any time. Sweet play.
That one up to the fifty and tackled right there.
That was Chase Gilliam with a good but brings up
(55:01):
a fourth down in about three or.
Speaker 10 (55:04):
Two, number fifty two.
Speaker 1 (55:05):
Troy Spencer UH five five senior really put a shot
on him. And it's one thing to try to get
run a hurry up offense and try to wear the
other team down, but you've got to have quality plays.
And now comments are forced with forced with about a
fourth and two and UH coach Winslow probably we'll try
(55:26):
to go off tackle here.
Speaker 2 (55:29):
And UH hand off to Van Gundy. It looked like
it was almost bobbled, but I think they got the
matthew Son DII aker first down.
Speaker 1 (55:36):
Yeah, buyers did a good job of turning a reverse
pivot there and almost missed the handoff. Van Gundy held
on and picked up a first down. I tell you
he's mister reliable. He made something out of nothing and
all they needed was a first down and he got
what they needed. And comments are still on the march
with nine to forty one to go.
Speaker 2 (55:55):
You have a few different guys that can run the ball,
but any type of short, short yardage situation, you know
exactly who's getting it in this common offense. First and
ten and now Bowers straight ahead and it's another rugby
scrum and a nice pick up there of about six yards.
Speaker 1 (56:11):
Yeah, it looked like a kind of a flying V
going up through there. And I think that's their third
and one play. Eric, Well, they picked up about five
or six yards. I'd run it on first down. Two.
Speaker 2 (56:23):
There you go, second down and five. Bower's up under center,
Harrison in motion, he takes it, goes up the middle,
and he keeps fighting and he fought for that that
yard there because he got hit right away.
Speaker 10 (56:36):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (56:37):
One thing about Harrison, he gets to that little corner
and he'll turn his shoulders north and south and he'll
pick up what he can.
Speaker 10 (56:45):
But I look for him.
Speaker 1 (56:46):
To bounce it one of these times and bounce it
to the outside and use his speed and maybe kick
it out down the sideline. Eight forty four left in
the second quarter, third down and three Elgin with the
six to nothing lead, and they faked the pitch to Harrison.
Oh Man handed it off.
Speaker 2 (57:04):
And I believe that is two Rhodes and he looked
to cut it back to the left and he just
lost his footing.
Speaker 1 (57:12):
So it brings up fourth down. Yeah, real nice defensive
play by the back side of Goshan defense. They were
not fooled by that counter. They stayed at home. Looked
like number sixty two Zeckman's five eight two ten sophomore
and comments are forced with another fourth down, fourth and three.
Looks like they're going to be in four down territory.
(57:32):
Clear out over the thirty seven yard line.
Speaker 2 (57:35):
Drew Brown comes running in as an extra lineman on
the left.
Speaker 1 (57:39):
Side, unbalanced wing to the laud and now Goshen calls
a quick time out. They probably weren't expecting that this
is going to be simple block down and kick out,
and here we come. All right, well we'll go ahead
and keep it here. We said this was going to
be a hard hitting game. Scott, you're right down there.
What are you seeing?
Speaker 22 (58:01):
A lot of telmet's going backwards, A lot of bodies
in the ground really hard.
Speaker 23 (58:06):
Uh, guys, I mean, you know, like coach said, it's
a war of attrition.
Speaker 22 (58:10):
These two teams know exactly how their offenses work, so
in every yard is literally earned. Man, I mean, of course,
Land and Shepherd. It looks like a man amongst the
boys out here and his hits, but uh, I tell
you what both teams are. They're just hitting each other
really hard. And uh, I'm sure there'll be a lot
of really a lot of ice and uh cold, you know,
(58:33):
ice baths and all that stuff tonight and because tomorrow
morning he's gonna be a little bit rough for these guys.
Speaker 10 (58:38):
Hey, do you have your field pass on to be
down there?
Speaker 23 (58:43):
I got you, I got my field passway right here.
Speaker 1 (58:45):
Bal oh no, here we go.
Speaker 10 (58:49):
So fourth down.
Speaker 1 (58:51):
And three and the handoff to Van Gundy on a
counter and he puts his head down and lets it
come to him and man, he laid it down and
they're saying, that's a Matthew's Honda Akra first down. Yeah,
that's a real big hit, both offensive defensively, and the
Carmets looked like they won the battle there. Referees did
(59:16):
not signal yet to move. Yeah, they're moving the chains.
Speaker 2 (59:19):
And that's to quote the immortal John Madden, that's go
up in the hole and boom.
Speaker 1 (59:25):
That was a d I mean, it was just.
Speaker 10 (59:27):
A he brought one of these. He brought one of
those out in Yes, he did. That was nice.
Speaker 2 (59:31):
So first and ten at the Goshen thirty five yard
line pitch out to Harrison and that's just stretched out
and actually maybe a loss of about one.
Speaker 1 (59:43):
Yeah, I looked like number eleven was in there, Reid weightman,
and I'll tell you what, they did a nice job
of stringing that out because they had him unbalanced. He
tried to get him to the outside and running to
the short side of the field, and Wainsfield did a
real nice job there.
Speaker 2 (01:00:01):
And Goshen Is it's not that they're not being pretty
stout on defense, because they are. Elgend's just I feel
like the offense is about as dynamic as what a
wing tea can be, as opposed to what goshen Is
probably used to.
Speaker 1 (01:00:16):
Yeah, they they it's a mirror image of their offense
pretty much. And now a penalty flag that's a false
start first penalty on the Comets tonight. Well, one of
the things that the comments have to their advantage is
they're up six points and their defense is playing really well,
so they can't panic here. They just have to keep
(01:00:37):
playing their game. You know, we have a whole second
half to go, six forty three to go. If you've
just tuned in, the Comets are up six nothing and
you know, yeah, it would be great for them to
score at the end of this, but right now, the
whole idea is I'm going to keep the football and
keep it out of Waynsfield's hands.
Speaker 2 (01:00:58):
Second down or excuse me. First, at second down in
fifteen swing pass out to Harrison, he makes one man miss,
runs up across the forty and is tackled for about
a three to four yard gain across the forty to
the thirty nine yard line.
Speaker 10 (01:01:14):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:01:14):
I like the play call there with Harrison getting that
little swing pass. The problem is they're going into the sideline,
doesn't give him very much room, and the defensive backs
and the outside linebacker over here are really doing a
good job. They have a little quickness for himself over
here and really hamming him in. And now the comments
are forced with a third and long. So let's see
if they have a third and long in this wing
(01:01:35):
p offense.
Speaker 2 (01:01:37):
Third down and thirteen for the comments, Bowers brings him
up to the line of scrimmage, being gundhy in the
backfield two or slot and wide receiver left slot right,
and now a fumble and that's a turnover. Yeah, as Bowers,
I think was trying to fake and he ran into
somebody and it just dropped.
Speaker 1 (01:01:58):
So Goshen get the ball. Quarterback didn't really get it
up there to where Van Gundy could handle it, and
I think it looked like it was down around his
knees and Van Gundy puts it on the ground. He
didn't even have control of it at all. So bad
turnover for the Comets, and that was the thing that
(01:02:19):
has plagued him his miscues. And up six nothing, you
don't want to give the ball back.
Speaker 2 (01:02:25):
So Goshen has lined up and they have a wide
receiver not being covered on the outside and he is
wide open and they're throwing it to him and he
is open and caught at the forty thirty twenty five
twenty and out of bounds.
Speaker 1 (01:02:40):
Elgin No coaches were even noticing that he came out
of the huddle by himself and just stood there. That's
a huge Matthews Hondiaker first down for Waynesville. Goshen well,
and it almost looked like a throwback because the quarterback
actually came and opened up over here to the right,
and it looked like at the last is that that
(01:03:00):
they were yelling throw it back that way and the
guy was wide open. Comets have gone to sleep here
in the last two minutes.
Speaker 2 (01:03:08):
They're five thirty two left here in the first period,
first and ten at the Elgin seventeen yard line, so
Goshen is right there and a handoff goes nowhere, maybe back.
Speaker 1 (01:03:25):
To the line. Scrimmer's note, bottle loss of one second down. Well,
the Comets have got to see what they're made out
of here, five nineteen to go and the clock's.
Speaker 10 (01:03:33):
Running down in the in this second quarter.
Speaker 1 (01:03:37):
And uh, that was really a terrible mistake right there
for the Comets.
Speaker 2 (01:03:43):
Yeah, that's just unfortunate. And again, you know, I didn't
even see any of the coaches noticing it down on
the field. Now in the box, they might have hand
off to the right side now cutting it back up
the middle up to the ten yard line, and that's
close to a Matthew's hondactra first down, I believe running
the ball there was.
Speaker 1 (01:04:08):
The waynsfield runs more of a looks like a more
of a traditional wing team, yes, pulling the pulling people
and kicking out and cutting up in and uh, right
now they've got some momentum, they've got some life, and
looks like they've got a little hopping their step offensively.
Speaker 2 (01:04:24):
I was Grant Britingham and now it's first in goal.
Now they hand off to the left side up to
the three and tackled right there and that's uh, Carson
Barnes with the carry second down.
Speaker 1 (01:04:40):
Well, the comments are on their heels right now with
four to twenty to go in the second quarter, and
they've got to find a way to come together here
and get a stop. But right now, Waynsfield Goshen is
really doing a great job coming off the ball, and
the running back really went up and put his shoulder
down and he's taking on the common defenders.
Speaker 2 (01:05:00):
So we know this is four down territory for Goshen
right up to the line of scrimmage. Hand off to
the left side and that's an easy touchdown there for Waynsfield,
Gosh and Carson Barnes with the three yard carry.
Speaker 10 (01:05:15):
Yeah, Carson Barnes is a load going through there. In
that time, no one touched him on that left side
and it's kind of they caved in the defensive end
and he bounced it to the outside. Nice carry, nice drive,
short drive for Waynesfield with that long pass and with
no coverage on that. So right now the Commets are
(01:05:36):
a little bit shell shocked right now, and Waynesfield has
a chance with three fifty two to go to go ahead.
Speaker 2 (01:05:42):
Coach Winslow had said before the game, you know the
the we we've had issues with the center court QB exchange,
and I think that was just one of those things
that happened. Again is Goshen is lining up for an
extra point. Looks like a straight on kick.
Speaker 1 (01:06:03):
That kick is up and that is good.
Speaker 2 (01:06:07):
So after the three yard run from Barnes and the
extra point, Goshen has the first lead of the night,
seven to six over Elgin. Three fifty two left until halftime.

The Matthews Honda Akurra High School Game of the.
Speaker 2 (01:07:26):
Week back here at Elgin High School for the Matthew
Sondaker High School Game of the Week. Waynsfield Goshen takes
the lead seven to six over Elgin. The kickoff goes
out of bounds at about the thirty eight yard line.
So Elgin will get good field position with the penalty there.
But coach let's kind of talk about you know, it
(01:07:48):
kind of just went south in a hurry for Elgin.
The fumble and then a huge play there on their
first play Waynesville Goshen with Elgin not realizing there's a
wide receiver that's lined up and they left him uncovered.
Speaker 1 (01:08:04):
Yeah, and that last series Elgin was trying they were
trying to feel the like they were trying to do
it more of a hurry up offense, line up, not
even huddle to maybe wear Waynsfield down. But the problem
was they weren't really getting very many good big plays
and they were forced with a couple fourth down plays
that they had to pick up and they almost lost
that one fourth down play and Van Gundy did a
(01:08:24):
great job of getting the football and getting the first down,
and then they go ahead and fumble, and then to
compound things, they don't cover a guy that loanso mend
out there, so to speak. They used to have a
play where a guy wouldn't go to the huddle and
he'd step on the field and that was that's illegal.
That's illegal, and it should be. But you know, the
kid kind of was somewhat close to the huddle and
(01:08:48):
then he kind of wandered back there and he was
in front of the referee and the safety or no
one really said.
Speaker 10 (01:08:54):
Hey, you know, there's a guy out here.
Speaker 1 (01:08:56):
This guy out here, no one covered him, and Waynsfield
capitalized on it.
Speaker 2 (01:09:00):
False or excuse me, off sides by Waynsfield Goshen the
left end jumped across, so Elgin able to pick up
five yards there, move up from their own forty forty
three yard line up ahead to the forty eight yard line.
Speaker 1 (01:09:19):
Yeah, Elgin trying to get Harrison the football again. They're
on the left hash and they're running to the left sideline.
So they really liked this side over here. They had
good success in the first quarter running to the left,
and that's what they're setting up to try to do. Waynesfield,
you know, gave them a gift there, first down penalty.
Speaker 2 (01:09:38):
So just in front of the midfield stripe, Elgin sets
up first and five.
Speaker 1 (01:09:45):
My question is, why does it look like six. Doesn't
look like it's halfway? Yeah, now it's first down again.
Speaker 2 (01:09:52):
Nice carry there by Van Gundy up ahead to the
opposing forty five yard line. That's enough for Matthews Hontaker
first down for the Comic.
Speaker 1 (01:10:00):
Yeah, this is where the Comets have to shake off
the last couple of minutes of that series, and they've
got to put one in the end zone.
Speaker 10 (01:10:07):
Three thirty eight to go.
Speaker 1 (01:10:08):
They've got plenty of time, and Van Gundy really did
a nice job of getting up a good full head
of steam and picking up a nice big first down
for the Comics.
Speaker 2 (01:10:17):
Elgin can try to score here before half and get
the ball first in the second half. Van Gundy straight
ahead again up to the forty So another big gain
of about five yards for Van Gundy.
Speaker 1 (01:10:27):
He's just getting started.
Speaker 10 (01:10:28):
Yeah, I'll tell you what.
Speaker 1 (01:10:29):
The offensive line and we've talked about those guys Brown, Lowry, Phillips, Shepherds, Skaggs,
and with Van Gundy carrying the football this first few
plays of this series, they've kind of they're going to
try to enforce their will onto the defense and Waynsfield,
a lot of their guys have their hands on their hips.
Speaker 10 (01:10:50):
Have been going both ways.
Speaker 1 (01:10:52):
But the Comets have got to shake off what happened
and try to get that touchdown back here in this series.
Speaker 2 (01:10:59):
Well, notice that the Comets are taking their time right
now to forty five and counting here in the second quarter,
hand off to Harrison to the right side. Now he
turns it up across the thirty five and that's another
Matthew signed actor first down for the Comets.
Speaker 1 (01:11:14):
Yeah, I think that it's a good idea to huddle
up so everybody's on the same page. And uh, even
the offensive linemen need to take a quick blow between
plays and not worry so much about wearing down Waynesfield, Waynesfield.
They seem like they're huffing and puffing right now. Defensively,
some of those kids have been really on a lot
of plays and two twenty six to go, plenty of time,
(01:11:36):
good field position.
Speaker 2 (01:11:37):
Slot left, double tights, two backs in the backfield, counter
play to Harrison. He goes to the left and gets
a couple of yards. Nice hard carry there by Quentin
Harrison and good.
Speaker 1 (01:11:50):
Lead block by Van Gundy. There number forty five and
right now the Commets look like they're picking it up
a little bit. With two to two to go. They
still have the ball on a thirty two yard line,
so they don't have a lot of time in this
type of offense to quick score. It looks like they're
bringing Brown in then possibly going to that unbalanced set well.
Speaker 2 (01:12:10):
And this is the thing, not that Elgin doesn't throw
the ball at all, but they rarely do. And that's
where you don't want too much time to run off
because you've got to pick up a few yards here
to get to the end zone. And now Waynesville goes
takes another time out.
Speaker 1 (01:12:24):
Yeah, Comets brought Brown over here, number sixty six on
the left side. They had unbalanced wing to the left,
and that's probably where they're going to go. I'm just
wondering if they have anything to the short side, because
right now the coaches from Waynsfield are probably saying, Hey, look,
we've got to adjust and we've got to shift over
and that's a good time to come back with maybe
(01:12:46):
a bootleg back to the right. When you lul the
defense to sleep a little bit and you're pounding to
that left side, that's a good time to come back
to the right side.
Speaker 2 (01:12:55):
Let's go ahead and run through some scores right now.
Shelby up over River Valley twenty one to seven. Ontario
and Pleasant tied at seven in the second period, Carry
up fourteen to nothing over Buckeye Central. Colonel Crawford and
Seneca East tied at seven. Danville up twelve to eight
over Cardington, Upper Sandusky twenty eight, Cyrus six, Clear Fork seven,
(01:13:17):
Hardings nothing. In the second period, North Union's up seven
to nothing over Northwestern, and Mount Gad and Centerberg are
at zero's Northmore fourteen.
Speaker 1 (01:13:28):
East Knox seven.
Speaker 2 (01:13:33):
And with the carry Van Gundy gets about a yard
and that's about it, and that brings it to third
down with a minute thirty left in the second period.
Speaker 1 (01:13:45):
Be a good time for a little boot action here
with the quarterback because no one is checking the quarterback
when he reverse pivots and gives the ball to the
running back, the defensive end is collapsing in and there's
nobody out to the wide side of the field.
Speaker 2 (01:14:00):
Well, you kind of feel like they've run it to
that side quite a bit. They've done the overload formation
to that side previously. It's almost like they're trying to
set something up third down and back to pass going deep,
but overthrows the intended receiver, which I believe was lust
right in front of the end zone and it's fourth down.
Speaker 1 (01:14:22):
Yeah, I try to run a little throw back there
back to the left. Pretty good arm pretty good throw,
just overthrown. Lust could not catch up with it.
Speaker 2 (01:14:33):
So now fourth down and Comment's going to go for it.
But we've seen with the Comments in this situation before.
They've also just pinned teams deep with a little pooch
kick every once in a while too, So.
Speaker 10 (01:14:46):
Well, with fifty four seconds to go, they might as
well go for it here.
Speaker 1 (01:14:49):
Mm hmm.
Speaker 2 (01:14:52):
So Comments break the huddle, the spread it out for
four wide receivers. This is something you don't see to
Elgin very often. In another time out by Waynsfield Goshen,
they're seeing things that they just have not seen this season.
Speaker 1 (01:15:09):
Well, this is a plan B for coach Winslow. I
really like it. Coach breaking the huddle and coming out
in trips to the right with one split in here
back to the backside.
Speaker 10 (01:15:20):
I would say he looked like he was going to
roll out when the whistle blew.
Speaker 1 (01:15:23):
So they're gonna run some type of combination route on
the outside to try to pick up a first down
with fifty four seconds to go, And I really like that.
You know, if you're a spread team, you've got to
have some running plays and maybe a tighter formation in
certain situations. And if you're a wing tee team, you've
better have some type of a spread in certain situations.
(01:15:44):
In this case, this is a perfect situation to spread
the team out to try to pick up this fourth
and seven.
Speaker 2 (01:15:51):
Well, let's face it, even a wing te team can
run that spread. Look with all the intentions of still
running it because they're going to try to the defense.
Now they're running the spread with the opposite overload on
the left and Elgin false start. They were trying to
get them to go off sides, and the right right
(01:16:11):
guard ended up jumping. Yeah, this is something that the
Commets for you know, the formation really shouldn't affect the
starting count, but actually it did, and now the Comets
are forced with even longer It looks like a fourth
and eleven. But it's still a makable situation here and
(01:16:31):
looks like Waynefield's going to you know, have their corners back,
their safety is going to be back linebackers are back
five yard depth and pretty much expecting the pass here,
four wide, two on each side back in the backfield.
That's Van Gundhi another pass deep down field, and that's
just going to be intercepted. Taken at the ten fifteen
twenty twenty five thirty and out at the thirty five
(01:16:55):
yard line. That was intercepted by Jase Kaufman. But just
as good as a punt, really.
Speaker 1 (01:17:00):
Yeah, fifty two on the tackle for the comments to
that's Dylan Phillips playing offensive line, came over to have
to make the tackle after the interception.
Speaker 2 (01:17:10):
So the Tigers take over first and ten at their
own thirty nine yard line. Thirty eight seconds left, up
seven to six over Elgin.
Speaker 1 (01:17:22):
All the comments, you know, have got to basically do
the same thing. And I don't like to use the
word prevet defense. Well it looks like they're kind of
set up in it. Yeah, they're already back about twenty
yards of safeties, but they've got to keep everything in
front of them.
Speaker 10 (01:17:41):
Thirty eight seconds to go in the half.
Speaker 2 (01:17:45):
So Elgin and basically a four to three deep four
as the corners are off about ten yards back to
pass is Coffin. Now he rolls left and he is
taken down for the sack. That's long Colton long on
the tackle. His helmet comes off, so he's gonna have
(01:18:06):
to come out for one play. Real fine play at
chasing the quarterback down. That's a loss of about five
second down and long clock running eighteen seconds left, and
Goshen may just let the clock run out.
Speaker 1 (01:18:20):
Yeah, it looks like they're going to They don't even
have to line up, so they're gonna be happy to
be going into the locker room with one point lead.
Speaker 2 (01:18:30):
And that does look like what they're going to do,
as they will take the lead at halftimes seven to
six over Elgin, And I really, really it looked to
me like Elgin pretty much dominated there in the first half.
Speaker 1 (01:18:50):
There's about a three minute period where they where the
wheels fell off a little bit. Eric and Waynsfield was
able to capitalize on it.
Speaker 2 (01:18:58):
All right, Scott's going to talk to coach real quick.
Scott's down to you, Sosh Wins.
Speaker 23 (01:19:04):
A lot of hard hitting kind of what you thought
would happen, right, two wing teams facing each other. Yeah,
I mean, this is awesome football.
Speaker 9 (01:19:09):
I mean I wish you know, it sucks that we
fumbled right there, so we're still searching for that exit,
that clean execution.
Speaker 23 (01:19:15):
But hey, that's true.
Speaker 9 (01:19:16):
Time, defending league champs and we're in about right now.
Speaker 10 (01:19:19):
This is football.
Speaker 22 (01:19:19):
It's fun, right, And you know you mentioned the turnovers
and the turnover issues and uh, you know, three turnoars
and there's three losses. So kind, what's the message going
in taking care of the football, busting the ball to
the outside, not letting butts hit the ball.
Speaker 23 (01:19:32):
Things like that? What are you talking about halftime with that?
Speaker 9 (01:19:35):
I mean, I'm not gonna say we need to, you know,
stop turning the ball over. Turnover the product of not
executing and cleaning up little things like you know, quarterback's
got to belly the ball from under the center instead
of leaving it out there so it doesn't hit the
polling guard. I mean, it's just a little stuff, man.
You know, we just got to clean up those fine
details to pick at the end.
Speaker 23 (01:19:50):
I don't care it's fourth and long.
Speaker 9 (01:19:51):
We're just gonna throw it up to our best guy.
Speaker 1 (01:19:54):
It is what it is. Like that doesn't bother me.
Speaker 9 (01:19:55):
But the fumble and midfield, you know that we got
to clean.
Speaker 23 (01:19:57):
That up, right, Thanks Coach.
Speaker 8 (01:19:59):
I appreciate it.
Speaker 2 (01:19:59):
Thanks all right, Thanks Scott. And you know, really I
think Coach feels pretty upbeat again. I don't I agree
with him. That last interception that was as good as
a punt, So I mean, you're just gonna throw it up.
But you know, one turnover that that hurt him a
little bit, but overall, you gotta be happy with the
way the Comets have played.
Speaker 1 (01:20:21):
Yeah, the one play where they had lack of coverage
on the receiver, that's pretty much been it for Waynsfield.
Speaker 10 (01:20:27):
They got some momentum, they.
Speaker 1 (01:20:29):
Caught Elgin off guard there, they were able to capitalize,
went up one, but that pretty much that was it.
They haven't been able to move the football on the
Comets that whole half except for that one series, and
that was because of the play. So I think coach
Winslow is going to go in and say, if we
get come out like we did in the beginning of
the game and get a touchdown and then start playing
(01:20:50):
some really hard defense and keep everything in front of us,
I think they're gonna be fine.
Speaker 2 (01:20:56):
All right, Well, we'll take a break here at halftime,
and when we come back, we will go over some
of the first half scoring and uh just do a
little bit of discussion like we normally do. Again, the
score here at Elgin. Elgin down to Waynsfield Goshen seven
to six. You're listening to the Matthews Honda Akur a

some of the scores, some updates over the scores that
(01:27:47):
I had given just a little bit ago. Shelby is
up twenty eight to fourteen over River Valley, so that
game not not too big of a distance between those
two in this game, and we know with the Vikings
they can score in bunches. Unfortunately, they're also facing a
team that can score itself in bunches, so this will
(01:28:09):
probably be a pretty exciting game over there in Shelby
between the Vikings and the Whippets. Ontario is up in
the second period fourteen to seven over Pleasant that one.
Another big battle on the Spartan Holme turf, and pleasant
going up against a team that's undefeated and they are
standing there right with them. Carry is up twenty eight

Speaker 2 (01:30:52):
Back here at Elgin High School was the comment marching
band takes the field with all of their alumni. That
is a nice group of alumni there, and I think
you agree, Coach Cruzio. It's looking pretty good there for
the Comet band. Yeah, watching Mark watch it. I can't
even talk right now. The alumni came in. They're not
(01:31:14):
in their uniform and that kind of threw me there
for a little bit. But I'll tell you what, They've
got a lot of numbers, a lot of spirit, and
I'm sure they're gonna sound really good right now. So, Coach,
we kind of talked in the first that the first
half Elgin pretty much dominated on offense. They were they
were time consuming drives, but they they were able to
(01:31:35):
score first and the defense played really well. It was
just really one defensive breakdown after a turnover that that
spelled doom. But other than that, Elgin's been the one dominating.
Speaker 10 (01:31:47):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:31:47):
I really like the way their defense came out, and
with Shepherd leading the way. He made a lot of
tackles in that first half. He was all over the field.
Comets have to play more again defense against that wing
t and Shepherd seems like he's being unblocked pretty much
the whole set. First half. He was on a lot
of players Van Gundy was in a lot of plays.
(01:32:10):
They dominated, their offensive line pretty much dominated.
Speaker 10 (01:32:13):
They were able to move the ball, not really huge
big plays, but they were.
Speaker 1 (01:32:17):
Able to move with to move the chains, picking up
the first touchdown. And but like you say that one pass, uh,
you know, you're just a missque and Comets, you know,
they when Elgin tried to do the fake punt, it
was one of those things I think where Harrison was
supposed to read whether or not he thought he had
daylight to go run for first down. It was a
(01:32:37):
little bit far those I think it was like fourth
and will be over ten yards, yeah, And I think
that yeah fired on him. He thinks, you know, he
has confidence in himself so well, he also had confidence
in the defense. If they didn't make it and the
Comets gave up some yardage, they bent a little bit,
but they didn't break on that series and they got
the ball back. So I think coach Winslow has a
(01:32:58):
lot of confidence in his defense. They've got to get
a break and capitalize like they did in the first
part of the first game where Waynsfield laid it on
the ground on a fumble and Commets was the tipped
interception by Brown and Comets capitalized on that and you know,
pretty much dominated like you say up front, but there's Evanett. Nevertheless,
(01:33:23):
they're down one point and they've got to fight back
to get that point back. Now, you can feel good
about it, but you don't have to love it, and
that's I think that's where coach Winslow is at. He
feels good about the.
Speaker 2 (01:33:33):
Position, excuse me, the position that they're in, but they
you know, when it comes down to it, you want
to have the lead because you want to be able
to win the game. So I'm sure that he'll he'll
fix whatever needs to be fixed. But overall, and you
heard his comments before going in at halftime that I
think he's pretty upbeat about how they're doing and and
(01:33:55):
they feel like they can move the ball and score
again on this defense.
Speaker 1 (01:33:59):
Well, in a game like this, it's a game of
adjustments going into the second half. We're gonna get to
see the Comets in the second half have the football
correct Yep, They're gonna have the football, So let's see
what they can do. I really think they've got when
they run the overload to the side, especially to the
left side, and the quarterback hands the ball off. When
(01:34:19):
he boots out away from the handoff, nobody is checking
him on that backside, and and you know, it's one
of those plays where you can maybe run a naked
boot leg with nobody pulling for you because the defense
is flying and not really checking back on that. So
I really think you gotta slow the defense down by
running some type of a counter or bootleg action away
(01:34:41):
from that. But if comets overloaded, they've just got to
say we're gonna get four yards, four yards, four yards
and just keep moving the ball, keep the ball out
of Waynsfield's hands in the second half, So we feel
good about the comments here going into the second half,
and we know it's going to be a pretty tight game.
Speaker 2 (01:34:59):
And we talk talked about these offenses. These teams both
are running, and so that kind of made me think
of a good question that I wanted to ask you, coach,
And this has more to do with just different things
that you've seen over the years, different clinics you've gone to.
I know you and I have talked about how there's
been times where you would go to a clinic and
(01:35:19):
get inspired by certain things you saw there. So what
maybe was one of the favorite or maybe a few
of the favorite either offensive schemes or just wrinkles that
you may have seen at a conference or even in
a game that get with an opponent.
Speaker 1 (01:35:38):
Well, I think it was about nineteen ninety. I went
to a clinic and this is an intimate, small clinic
Paul Breminggen. They called the Sons in Bremingen. They used
to coach at Mount Gilliert coach at River Valley. The
coach Winter invited me to go. I was a young
coach and it was on a Sunday, and I think
(01:35:58):
we and Tony Bray and some of these guys from
the local area were there and we were supposed to
share something from our offense or defense, and I think
I shared some weight training or whatever. And I was
sitting next to a guy, Jerry Cooper who's now coach
over at Years. He's still coaching over at Lima, and
(01:36:22):
he showed me a play, the trap play running from
the two back set of course to the tailback, and
I wrote it down and I even called the blocking
tiger trap. Because he actually coached at Waynesfield Goshen, which
is kind of ironic that you asked that question. Yeah,
he was coaching there and they were they're the Tigers,
(01:36:44):
so I called it the Tiger Trap. And we also
ran a bootleg action with a divide play that I
got from coach from Cressline, and both of those plays.
The very next year I became the head coach and
we ran those a lot with Doug Hesson on the
twenty one trap, I remember, and we called a tiger trap,
(01:37:07):
and it was It wasn't a big clinic where Lou
Holtz was going to speak or some big name coach.
It was other local high school coaches that had their
favorite plays that they ran. And you know coaches, they
steal things from other people.
Speaker 2 (01:37:20):
Well, and that's what those coaches. Clinics are about more
than anything. I mean, you go, it's fun to go
to the ones that like Ohio State puts on. You
can hear some things from some really amazing coaches, but
it's the interaction with the other coaches, the smaller sessions
that are just about very specific things where it's like, oh, well,
(01:37:41):
I see this, it could fit in our offense or
it could fit in our defense.
Speaker 10 (01:37:44):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:37:46):
And then on the other hand, you're talking about going
to a large clinic. I went to a clinic in
Pittsburgh and Johnny Major's was the coach at pitt and
Tony Dorsett was the running back and somebody asked him
about offense and how it evolved, and he says, well,
the first thing you have to and he's talking to
a bunch of high school coaches. He says, well, the
(01:38:06):
first thing you got to do is go out and
recruit a kid that can run about four to three
and his name is Tony Dorsett, and then the rest
is history. They became national champions that year, and I
really did that kind of turned me off because we
weren't there to hear that kind of thing. We were
there to try to learn something. As far as even
going down when we were running the option. We were
(01:38:28):
down there and once again, I was sitting with Jerry Cooper.
We were in the front row and we were young coaches,
and we were trying to soak it all in, and
he was talking about the option play and talking about
the quarterback center.
Speaker 10 (01:38:40):
Exchange, and there I was.
Speaker 1 (01:38:41):
I was down there trying to soak it all in
and try to learn all the details that I could
from these guys that knew a lot more about it
than I did. And I think that's what you need
to do when you go to those clinics. A lot
of it is reinforcement of things you already do, but
some of it you pick up that one We called
it picking up that one little not that's gonna make
your team just a little bit better.
Speaker 2 (01:39:03):
Well, that's just great stuff, coach. And sometimes I asked
these questions just because the conversations you and I have
and I'm like, people need to hear this, And that
was one of them that I thought about. But somebody
who's actually getting ready to have a conversation with tonight's
guest of honor really as the band continues to play,
(01:39:28):
and boy, they I thought their show was over. They
came out off the field standing right in front of
the fans and they are trying to get everybody fired up.
Speaker 1 (01:39:40):
If the football team was standing over here right now,
they would go out and really really turn it on,
because right now the Common Band is really rocking. Yes
they are. They are nice and loud.
Speaker 2 (01:39:51):
But again downstairs with Scott is our homecoming queen for
the evening, Queen Delaney. She was crowned tonight alongside the
King Nash Lust. Now Nash, obviously we're not talking to
him right now because he's got a game to play.
But right now, Scott down with the Queen. Delaney Bulls.
Speaker 1 (01:40:14):
Scott, go ahead and take it away, home boy.
Speaker 23 (01:40:17):
You guys can hear me. I'm here with the two bulls. So, Dey,
I know you do a lot of you do a
lot of things. What else do you do? I'm so
that's a lot.
Speaker 27 (01:40:33):
And then I'm part of the student council as well as.
Speaker 23 (01:40:39):
In the NHS. And uh, what are your plans after
high school? Because you know you'll be getting that question
a lot here in the next few months. Where are
your plans after high school?
Speaker 13 (01:40:49):
Yeah?
Speaker 27 (01:40:50):
I want to go to MT and I want to
do the radiology tragnition program there and just to start out.
Speaker 31 (01:41:00):
If I'm not really sure what I want to do,
like what I.
Speaker 33 (01:41:03):
Want to work on you, but I want to start
out in radiology.
Speaker 23 (01:41:07):
Sounds good.
Speaker 22 (01:41:07):
And what was your reaction when you found out tonight
that you had won?
Speaker 23 (01:41:12):
What was their emotions going through your head?
Speaker 27 (01:41:15):
I'm just super excited as a big honor and just
really happy to be a queen.
Speaker 22 (01:41:22):
And you know, you know, guys, Delaney Bulls, she actually
played volleyball with my daughter on her travel volleyball.
Speaker 23 (01:41:30):
Team just last year or so.
Speaker 22 (01:41:32):
Delaney, congratulations again, and it couldn't happen to do a
better kid.
Speaker 1 (01:41:35):
Congratulations all right, Thank you Scott, Thank you Delaney. And
that was that was the epitome of beauty and the beast.
And I think we know which one was the beast,
I think very obviously. No, congratulations Delanney. Congratulations to nash Lust.
(01:41:59):
These are the memory that you get to make in
your senior year that you'll always remember. And it's a
good thing. I know from your point of view. It's
it's fun to watch. But when you were coaching, as
much as you supported homecoming, it was also trying not
to make it a distraction. Well, you know, you got
the guys are starting split in and and defensive back
(01:42:22):
riding on a golf cart before the game, and you got,
you know, guys. But it's all part of it, and
they've got to try to channel it in and and
I think the comments are doing a really good job
of that. But it's time to play football, getting ready
for the second half. They have the football and they've
got to set the tone. This first series on offense
(01:42:42):
is a series that you know, the we're gonna get
to see what the offensive adjustments, if any, they're going
to make in the second half.
Speaker 10 (01:42:49):
And they've got to turn it up a notch.
Speaker 1 (01:42:51):
In the second half as far as effort and cut
down on some of the minor mistakes and major mistakes
of course, and really go back after.
Speaker 10 (01:43:02):
It against Waynesfield tonight.
Speaker 2 (01:43:04):
I just got an update from Pleasant grad Justin Coomey,
who is at the Pleasant game. And if you don't know,
Justin is one of the directors of a compliance for
the Ohio State football team, and he is down there
at Pleasant right now in fourteen seven at the half,
and he said that the defense has been tough and
(01:43:25):
Ontario hasn't run bod Penn Miller as much as he expected.
But again, if you haven't watched Ontario play, you might
think that he runs the ball all the time, and
he really doesn't. They run by committee.
Speaker 1 (01:43:40):
Yeah, and I'll tell you what Pleasant's got, the type
of defense that loves a go against a running team,
and they loved a gang tackle. So you know, maybe
Miller can't get loose as he did against River Valley.
Speaker 2 (01:43:54):
Kickoff goes to the twenty yard line. I think that
was Nash Lust returning it and he got it all
the way up to about the forty three yard line.
So that's where the comments take over.
Speaker 10 (01:44:08):
Person ten.
Speaker 1 (01:44:09):
Yeah, great field position for the Commets. So let's see
if they can tie it on here in their offensive line.
We've talked about these guys Brown, Lowry, Phillips, Shepherds Skaggs
with Van Gundy right behind the quarterback, Bowers and Harrison
as a sidekick, and they haven't really run roads that
much tonight, like like they did in the previous game
(01:44:29):
that we did.
Speaker 2 (01:44:30):
That is true. So verse and ten for the comments.
Starting the third period sweep play to Harrison, he gets
taken back to the thirty five. Now up to the
forty he goes and turns a pretty big negative play
into a positive three yards for second down.
Speaker 10 (01:44:47):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:44:47):
Real nice defensive play there. Coming across the line of
scrimmage was porter for Waynesfield, but he missed the tackle
and Harrison turned a little something from nothing and picked
up a few yards second down and seven at the
Comet forty five we'll say forty six yard line, wide
(01:45:11):
right split left, two backs in the backfield. Handoff goes
to the left of Harrison on a little sweep and
nothing there as Goshen's defense comes out pretty aggressive. Well,
comments don't like this situation here, that's gonna be h
third down in about seven maybe a long six and
(01:45:36):
you know I've seen him run the quarterback, sneak the
rugby scrumble and right up through picking up a first
down in this situation. But it looks like they're going
to go to an I formation third down and play action.
Speaker 2 (01:45:53):
They throw it out, swing it out, caught by LUs
but he had to come back for it quite a bit.
So it's only a game of about three and brings
up fourth down.
Speaker 1 (01:46:03):
Yeah, they needed to get a little bit more than that,
and looks like the Comets are going to go for
it here and fourth down. They still have a lot
of confidence in their defense, we said in the first half,
other than that three minute period where they had the
the uh misplay, looks all are switching it out. Made
a decision to go ahead and punt the football. Smart
decision here by the Commets.
Speaker 2 (01:46:24):
Ten oh six left in the third period. Comments are
punting Harrison back at his own thirty five gets the
snap and now a penalty flag?
Speaker 1 (01:46:35):
Is that a delay a game? False start? But we
don't have field clocks here, so we can't really tell
if it was a delay. The officials coming in talking
to the I'm not sure.
Speaker 2 (01:46:54):
I would think if it was a false start, they
would have he would have signaled it right away.
Speaker 10 (01:46:58):
Yeah, it is a false start.
Speaker 1 (01:47:02):
If it was on the defense, they would have let
it go and see what happens in the play.
Speaker 10 (01:47:08):
But looked like the young man was moving.
Speaker 2 (01:47:11):
Comments moved five yards back. Nice snap, kicks up, good
kick comes down at the thirty, rolls out at the
or down at the twenty or excuse me. I was
hit at about the twenty five and touchdown at about
(01:47:32):
the twenty three yard line.
Speaker 1 (01:47:33):
Yeah, so not too bad a field position for Waynesfield here,
taking over with nine to forty three to go. We
just started the second half. Comments were able to move
on their first possession, and let's see what Waynsfield has
up on their sleeve. I look for him to maybe
open it up a little bit on elgin Well in
second half with the.
Speaker 2 (01:47:52):
Pass and they tried early ended up, you know, throwing
an interception and then almost another interception, and it seemed
like they just abandoned it.
Speaker 10 (01:48:02):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:48:02):
Comments had a lot of pressure on any passes that
they did throw, So it looks like they're staying in tight.
Speaker 2 (01:48:09):
Run to the right and now at the outside twenty
five thirty thirty five. No tackled at the thirty three,
But that was a big run there. I believe that
was Grant Betigham.
Speaker 1 (01:48:19):
Yeah, and Harrison had to come clear from this right
side and chase him down. Fortunately he was able to
get him because I think he had a lot of
green real estate ahead of him if Harrison doesn't make
that tackle. So now it's second down and one up
ahead at about the thirty three yard line, So big
(01:48:40):
play to start with for the Tigers. As another whistle
from that far referee, there wasn't even anybody up to
the line of scrimmage, so I'm not real sure what
he could call at this point. Well, I didn't see
a flag, but he's pointing at the ball.
Speaker 10 (01:49:00):
Uh, I am not sure on the placement.
Speaker 1 (01:49:04):
Maybe looks like they're going to measure.
Speaker 10 (01:49:08):
It's close enough for measurement.
Speaker 2 (01:49:10):
Here, Okay, Well that that referee over there said we
needed to measure, I thought that the referee, the head
ref had to call for that.
Speaker 1 (01:49:18):
I think we've had two measurements tonight. And that's more
than we've had all season.
Speaker 10 (01:49:22):
I think it could be.
Speaker 2 (01:49:24):
Actually it could be the coach may have won and
that's why it came from the other side. Yes, so
they're saying it's it's just inches short. So big second
down play here.
Speaker 1 (01:49:37):
So this is one of those where you can maybe,
uh run something a little risky here because you can
always come back on third down and inches to pick
up the first down.
Speaker 10 (01:49:47):
So maybe catch.
Speaker 1 (01:49:47):
A little play action pass, you know, Elgin thinking that
it's going to be a run. Maybe catch them off guard,
get a get a receiver behind him, and let's see
what they do t backfield, and the quarterback takes it
himself and takes it for a big gain. Almost to me,
looked like one of the linemen fired off early, but
(01:50:08):
they didn't call it, and that's enough for Matthews Honda
Actor first down up to the thirty nine yard line.
Speaker 10 (01:50:14):
Yeah, they definitely did fire off.
Speaker 1 (01:50:16):
And their offensive line has really picked it up here
the last couple of plays coming off Elgin standing up
a little bit. They've got a match effort here and
Waynsfield Goshen they I really admire the way they've kept
their composure because they were really being pushed around in
that first quarter, and they really came back on the
(01:50:36):
second quarter and.
Speaker 2 (01:50:37):
Off to the left side, and there the comments stack
up the running back. That was a gang tackle, no gain. Yeah,
Shepherd was in there. Looked like.
Speaker 1 (01:50:47):
Rhodes was in there. Twenty five Finn van Gundy was
in there. So I mean this whole right side of
the defense was in there. Brown looked like he was
in there. So these guys they're still getting after it.
Here seven fifty three to go.
Speaker 2 (01:51:05):
Second and ten at the tiger thirty nine. Now a
rollout to the left and a pass downfield and man open,
and that's caught at the twenty five twenty fifteen ten
five touchdown Waynsfield Ghoshen.
Speaker 1 (01:51:20):
There's that boot action away from the flow and catching
the Commets off guard. That's reed weightman five ten one
sixty five and nice he just ran under it. A
quarterback did a really nice job. That's Kaufman rolling to
his left and lobbing it up there in the air.
It was up there, it seemed like for a long time,
(01:51:41):
and a young man ran under it and.
Speaker 10 (01:51:43):
Basically took it to the house.
Speaker 1 (01:51:45):
And now Waynsfield up thirteen to six was seven thirty
eight to go.
Speaker 2 (01:51:49):
Yeah, that's big, and it looked like he came across
the coverage and the defensive back just never could catch him.
Speaker 10 (01:51:56):
It didn't somebody just mention that he may open it
up with a pass.
Speaker 1 (01:51:59):
Now you're sounding like my wife wanted me to admit
that she's right. Well, I just think that sometimes when
you're running the ball, running the ball, running the ball,
good thing to do would be a little play action pass,
catch the defensive backs nap. And so that's exactly what
Waynsfield did. That was a good call by them and
it paid off.
Speaker 2 (01:52:20):
So seven thirty eight left in the third period, Elgin
down to Waynsfield go from fourteen to six.
Speaker 1 (01:52:26):
We'll take a break. You're listening to high school football

Speaker 28 (01:53:29):
The Matthews Honda Acurra High School Game of the Week.
Speaker 2 (01:53:36):
Stick off return by Elgin's twenty five thirty thirty five
forty and tackled at the forty three yard line that
was returned by Brayln Lowry and good field position for
the Comments and they need it right now.
Speaker 1 (01:53:53):
A gauge static from Waynsfield really had a nice hit there.
But I thought the young man was gonna get a
little more yard and he came from nowhere and made
a real nice tackle knocking him out of bounds.
Speaker 10 (01:54:05):
But still comments are in.
Speaker 1 (01:54:06):
Great field, positioned on the forty five yard line and
they're down. They need to get something going here on
this series. That's a big series for Elgin. Not only
do they need to score the touchdown, but then they're
going to have to get the two point conversion just
to tie the game up first and ten. She backs
in the backfield counter play the Rhodes and only about
(01:54:29):
a gain of one that one to the left. Second down. Yeah,
that was their quarterback coming up to make the tackle,
number zero Kaufman. And I tell you it looks like
Wayne's that was number five. That was Brinnet Gam, Britti Gam.
And it looks like they're picking up the hitting a
little bit, Eric.
Speaker 2 (01:54:47):
Yeah, it just seems like the team with the kind
of depleted bench is more aggressive and hitting harder.
Speaker 1 (01:54:55):
Right now. They're playing iron man football out there, and
they want it right now.
Speaker 2 (01:55:00):
Second down, pitch out to Harrison to the right. Now
he gets up across the fifty good run by Quentin
Harrison up to the forty seven yard line, forty eight
yard line, and that brings up third down.
Speaker 1 (01:55:14):
Yeah, I really like that play. A little bit farther
than off tackle, gives Harrison a little bit more running room,
had a lot more real estate there was tackled by
number zero Kaufman, who is also playing their quarterback. So
if you could make him make a few more tackles,
take a little bit of wind out of his sales,
making less effective offensively.
Speaker 10 (01:55:37):
What was it?
Speaker 2 (01:55:39):
So Scott wants me to throw his keys to random people.
Speaker 1 (01:55:42):
So I just did. Somebody's gonna take his car.
Speaker 2 (01:55:44):
Yeah, So penalty flag and that is on Waynsfield Goshen.
So that's a Matthew signed acker. First down and you
get it any way you can as the comments move
it up to the forty two yard line.
Speaker 1 (01:55:58):
Comments are on the march right now. They know the
seriousness of this series and they've got to get some
points here.
Speaker 2 (01:56:05):
Hand off on the counter to Harrison now going to
the right and nothing there. Second down.
Speaker 10 (01:56:11):
I'll tell you what.
Speaker 1 (01:56:11):
Waynsfield is staying low and looked like fifty four. He's
been on a lot of activity tonight. Brody Roberts five
six two fifty and he's built like a defensive tackle.
It looks strong and quick, and he stayed low making
a perfect tackle. You know, to me it's past couple plays,
but probably all night long. It looks to me the
interior line is getting good. Second level.
Speaker 2 (01:56:35):
It looks like the tackles are having a really difficult
time with the Waynsfield Goshen tackles and ends.
Speaker 10 (01:56:39):
Yeah they're not. They're very active, they're very strong and
they move their.
Speaker 2 (01:56:44):
Feet pass outside and that's incomplete through it a little
bit too hard and out of reach of nash Lust.
Speaker 1 (01:56:50):
That's a third down.
Speaker 10 (01:56:51):
Now.
Speaker 1 (01:56:53):
I like the thought there, but man, well that play
worked in the first quarter. But you've got to give
the receiver and opportunity to catch a football and run
with it. And all it was was a little quick screen.
And now Comets are forced with a third and ten
and then a wing t offense. This is very difficult
to pick up. Now, we'll see what the comments come
(01:57:14):
up with. They did go into a spread look earlier.
Now they did throw for it, but they really didn't.
It wasn't much that they could do on that one
hand off. Van Gundy gets to the left side, but
he's tackled at the forty only a gain of about
three and that brings up fourth down and long.
Speaker 10 (01:57:34):
Well, we'll see if the comments will gamble here. They've got.
Speaker 1 (01:57:40):
How it looks like they're gonna punt it, at least
in apparent punt. It's still fourth and long. They definitely
don't want to give Waynsfield the ball here. Anything can
happen on the punt if they punted away, maybe the
receiver will drop it. Anything can happen. At least hopefully
they'll have a deep, good defensive field position.
Speaker 2 (01:57:59):
Pretty good is off taking at the ten, fifteen twenty
and taking down hard hit at about the twenty one
yard line. That's where Waynsfield Goshen takes over first ten.
Speaker 1 (01:58:09):
Yeah, a good hit down below, and it looked like
number fifty, number fifty. I believe all he's coming off
the field. We've got to give him that. He had
a pretty good shot there, and that's Skaggs. He's also
an offensive lineman putting a shot on the kid who's
also the punt returner. He's a defensive back and he's
(01:58:32):
also their quarterback, so maybe they're trying to wear him
out a little bit.
Speaker 2 (01:58:38):
I've thirty left in the third period. Waynsville Goshen up
over Elgro fourteen to six. Eric Mosley with coach John
Couzio Scott Cameron down on the sidelines. A beautiful night
for football tonight, and the crowd is active and involved.
Waynsville Goshen right up to the Lions scrimmage hand off
to the right side and not much there. I didn't
(01:59:02):
see who got it. I imagine it's brighting gam but
not sure second down.
Speaker 1 (01:59:10):
Well, here's a situation where you have a wing t offense.
They're up fourteen to six, five eleven to go. Clock's
running basically going to try to just get.
Speaker 10 (01:59:20):
First down after first down after first.
Speaker 2 (01:59:22):
Down and keep the ball away from the Comets. Second
down and nine. Now pass out there, caught by Brendan
gam now up to the thirty thirty five, but a
penalty flag on it.
Speaker 1 (01:59:32):
I think that's going to come back. Yeah, he threw
it really early before he caught the football. Number seven
for the Comets makes the tackle. That's Middleton, But they're
going to bring that back a legal procedure. But boy,
he threw that penalty late. It's almost the play had
started and maybe they couldn't hear his whistle.
Speaker 2 (01:59:54):
Well, like you said, coach, it would make sense to
open it up, and that appears to be what Waynsfield
Goshen has decided to do, is to open it up.
Speaker 1 (02:00:03):
Yeah, the defensive backs from the for the Commets are
having a really difficult time right now, and even the
few passes that Waynsfield has thrown, they're able to pick
up pretty good yardage.
Speaker 2 (02:00:19):
Big run to the outside, but stopped in the backfield.
There was about three point linemen out to the outside.
Speaker 1 (02:00:25):
Yeah, I was gonna say, I think everybody pulled to
the left and the Comets just went with him. Good
defensive play and this is where the Commets have to
take advantage of. This big third down play forced Waynsfield
to punt the football and they'll get the ball inside
the fifty yard line for sure. The young man that
punted in the first first part of the game only
(02:00:46):
had about a twenty yard punt twenty five yard punt,
so this is a big opportunity for Comments. Third down
and fifteen and the ball is back at the Tiger
sixteen yard line and just a handoff dive play are
about one yard and so the Comments get a chance here. Yeah,
Rhodes is underneath. It looks like Shepherd's underneath. It looks
(02:01:08):
like our guy number thirty two, that's Colton Long was
underneath it. And a good defensive series for the Comets.
Speaker 2 (02:01:16):
Back deep is Harrison, who is a threat anytime the
ball is in his hand. The thing is, the ball's
got to be able to get to him. First punt
by Waynsfield, gosh, and only went about fifteen twenty yards
snap his back kick us up. This one is about
fifteen yards. Elgin just needs to get away from him.
Now it rolls backwards even better for the Comments down
(02:01:38):
at the twenty six yard line. Comets have an excellent
opportunity here.
Speaker 1 (02:01:42):
Yeah, Comments need to get fired up. And you know
the lineman, those are the guys that have to make
it happen. Right now, you're running a wing t offense
and they've got to make it easier on the backs
and dedicate themselves on this series. You get something in
the end zone. Right now, we're down fourteen to six
with three one to go in the third quarter.
Speaker 2 (02:02:03):
So Comets huddle up real quick and see what they
can do here again, down by eight, two backs in
the backfield, Bowers up under center, hand off to the
slot that's Harrison to the left, and gets about three
(02:02:23):
yards tough yards second down.
Speaker 1 (02:02:25):
Yeah, they didn't wait and give it to the second man.
They gave to Harrison on a quick dive play which
looks like it seemed to work. They the offensive line
got to their guys that they were blocking and they
still made it him and Harrison picked a hole and
picked up a nice gain on first down and Elgin
taking their time again plenty of time left, but I still.
Speaker 2 (02:02:47):
Have one whole quarter to go. But Elgin has been
methodical all night for the most part. Second down, hand
off to the right and breaking through is Harrison. Now
he cuts the other way. Five touch down Harrison on
a cutback.
Speaker 10 (02:03:03):
Yeah, that was a scene that they needed. And Harrison hit.
Speaker 1 (02:03:06):
That hole and took it to the left, gave the
limp leg to the safety and really like the way
he bounce it to the left side. Touchdown. They're down
two points now, fourteen to twelve with two thirty six
to go in the third quarter.
Speaker 2 (02:03:20):
So a twenty yard touchdown run by Quentin Harrison brings
Elgin back within two. And that's a big, big touchdown
there for the comments. So Elgin lineup for the two
point conversion, handing it off to the right side, and
(02:03:46):
that's in and I believe that is Harrison.
Speaker 1 (02:03:50):
Harrison as well, got to give him the rock. So
now he's the hot guy tonight.
Speaker 2 (02:03:54):
Right now, we are tied fourteen all here at Elgin.
This is a game just like we thought it would be.
We'll take a break, we'll come back with more action.
You're listening to high school football in fourteen ninety Wmrin trul.

The Matthews Honda Akurra High School Game of the Week.
Speaker 2 (02:05:14):
Back here at Elgin High School. Elgin kicks off and
looked to me like Quentin Harrison just laid the SmackDown
on the return man.
Speaker 10 (02:05:23):
Now that was TJ Britten oh TJ.
Speaker 1 (02:05:26):
Britton, Yes, sophomore very nine, number twenty three, Yeah, five seven,
one fifth or one fifty really like you say, put
the smack down on him. Hopefully that's an indication of
what the defense is going to do on this series.
But Waynsfield, gosh, and they know they're in a dogfight now.
Tied up here at Comet Land.
Speaker 10 (02:05:46):
With two thirty three to go.
Speaker 2 (02:05:48):
In the third hand off to the right breaks a
few tables across the twenty thirty just short of the thirty.
I believe that was brennanan and close to a five
yard game, six yard game. Let's go down to Scott
real quick, Scott.
Speaker 22 (02:06:06):
You know, coach Kuzio was talking about Harrison being able
to break the ball to the outside, and that's exactly
what he did on that touched round run.
Speaker 23 (02:06:13):
He was able to go middle and then break it
to the outside and use his speed.
Speaker 22 (02:06:16):
But guys, you know, big players make big plays when
it matters most, and that's what he's doing right now.
But Bradigan for man for the Tigers, he's taking a
couple really hard licks on the putt return on that
kickoff return. He's feeling it, guys, he's walking around a
little limber.
Speaker 2 (02:06:34):
Second down carry and that's Brandon he breaks free across
the thirty up ahead to the forty. That's a Matthews
Honda actor a first down for the Tigers.
Speaker 1 (02:06:42):
Well, that his hits it he's been taking must have
loosened him up, because I'll tell you what. He bounce
it to the outside and there's no quit here in
the Tigers. And the comments have got to match that effort,
because you know, this is only the third quarter, one
forty three to go. We're going to be in for
one whale of a fourth quarter, absolutely so.
Speaker 2 (02:07:00):
First down and ten for the Tigers at their own
thirty nine yard line, one thirty two in counting here
in the third period. You know, this is one of
those games where you never know, you don't know who's
gonna win because both teams are so evenly matched. Hand
off straight ahead and a dive for about one yard
(02:07:23):
and that was number sixteen Carson Barnes for the carry
second down.
Speaker 1 (02:07:27):
Yeah, comments are inserting in Lavallet for number fifty two
defensive tackle Phillips given him a little bit of a
blow defensively. Young man's been playing pretty much the whole
time offense and defense.
Speaker 2 (02:07:42):
Tiger's up to the line of scrimmage, handing it off
to Breingan, and he breaks free, gets tackled, and really
he stumbled on his own. But the blocking here in
this second half by the Tigers is just key. They
could not run to the outside in the first half.
Now they're picking up chunks.
Speaker 1 (02:08:00):
Yeah, comments inserting number twenty Chase Gilliman too. The lineup
of freshman six to two hundred. I think coach Winslow
sensing that his defensive defensive linemen are getting a little tired,
so he's trying to get some subs in there here.
Speaker 10 (02:08:13):
Right before the end of the quarter.
Speaker 2 (02:08:16):
They're down in four at the Tiger forty five yard line.
Tiger's up the lion of scrimmage, handed off straight ahead
and maybe a gain of one.
Speaker 1 (02:08:26):
This is gonna be a big fourth down play for Waynsfield.
That was about the forty eight yard line. Forty seven.
Speaker 2 (02:08:33):
Excuse me, coach, that was say, okay, Carson Barnes with
the carry, only a gain of one, So fourth down,
and I think they're just gonna let the clock run down,
and they are. So at the end of three, the
score is tied. Here elgin Waynsfield, gosh and tied at fourteen.
We'll take a break and we'll be back with the
start of a really exciting fourth quarter. You're listening to

The Matthews Honda Acura High School Game of a week.
Speaker 2 (02:10:02):
More than three Waynsfield gost and goest for back to
pass and the man's wide open caught at the thirty
yard line. Another huge pass play for Waynesfield Ghost and
for Matthews Honaker first down.
Speaker 1 (02:10:15):
What is going on? Well, there's that little boot action again.
They're running flow to the right side. Quarterback rolled out
opposite the fake and sets up and a young man
got in behind the secondary made a really nice comeback
catch there picked up a first down That really hurts
the comments there I mean, can you be too keyed
(02:10:37):
in on that run and just expect, you know, that's
the play action pass for you.
Speaker 2 (02:10:42):
First down, Carrie goes maybe for a yard up in
the middle, and that's Carson Barnes with the carry.
Speaker 10 (02:10:50):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (02:10:51):
They always say the backs will lie to you, but
the linemen tell the truth. And that time the lineman
didn't come across the line of scrimmage and they settled
in after the fake and the backs kept really nice
fake though by the quarterback and the running back.
Speaker 2 (02:11:07):
And really the run game has not I mean, they've
had some success in this second half, but the comments
have done pretty well against the run game. It's just
this passing game that's that's killed them. Second down and nine,
sweet play, and that's for a loss. It might be
about a three yard loss, so that'll make it third
and long.
Speaker 1 (02:11:28):
Yeah, it looked like Roads come across first and tripped
him up. And I think Shepherd may have been in there,
and that those guys on that right side, the defensive
right side, look like Colton Long was over there on
that side. He makes a lot of plays, gets underneath people.
Speaker 2 (02:11:47):
Again, we are tied fourteen all ten twenty eight and
counting in the third or fourth period, pitched to the
left side and a nice game there by the running back.
I'm not sure who it was. I think it might
have been Barns yep. And so a can't gain of
about seven or eight brings up a fourth and about four.
Speaker 10 (02:12:09):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (02:12:10):
See, that's what that little pass does for you. It
makes the defensive backs a little gun shy of coming
up and they get they're staying back on their guys
on their man, especially if they're running them off and
they're in man coverage. And Sheppard came over in the
first quarter. We made that play, and now we're in
the fourth quarter. He's not making it. He's trailing it
(02:12:32):
because he's been in on a lot of plays and
he's kind of huffing and puffing.
Speaker 10 (02:12:35):
Right now.
Speaker 2 (02:12:35):
Ball's at the elgin twenty four to fourth down roll out.
This looks to be the throwback and caught out of
the backfield fifteen ten five touchdown Waynsfield ghost.
Speaker 1 (02:12:46):
In that time. The throwback to the back just on
a swing in the backfield and nobody was anywhere near him. Yeah,
the defensive backs were caught up with the fake and
they rotated over to the right side and like you said,
nobody came back over and checked this receiver back here,
and that was also a great run by the receiver.
(02:13:09):
Took on a couple defensive backs and bounced it in
the end zone and got to give Waynsfield a lot
of credit.
Speaker 10 (02:13:15):
On that very well designed play.
Speaker 2 (02:13:17):
That was a catch by brining gam and that was
about a thirty yard touchdown reception. Kick is up and
that is good. So with ten oh nine left in
the fourth period, Waynsfield Goshen takes the lead back twenty
(02:13:38):
one to fourteen over Elgin.
Speaker 1 (02:13:40):
Will take a break.

The Matthews Honda Acura High School Game of the Week.
Speaker 2 (02:14:49):
Barnburner here at Elgin High School, Waynesville, Goshen takes the
lead twenty one to fourteen over Elgin ten oh nine
left in the fourth period. Eric Mosley with coach John
cruzioh Scott Cameron down the sideline. Scott, what's the feeling
down there on the sideline?
Speaker 22 (02:15:06):
You know, the coaches are really frustrated with the coverage,
kind of blown coverages. Yeah, like you mentioned, it's just
kind of getting sucked into the whole play action and
not the actual pass of the action. And that's really
been hurting the defense. Obviously it's leading to the depth
sit of a touchdown. But people are a little star
star stud right now, a little shell shocked, you know,
(02:15:29):
you know, just kind of getting eat alive.
Speaker 23 (02:15:30):
But there's still a hope, guys, there's still ten minutes.
Speaker 22 (02:15:33):
But like I said earlier, Harrison's got to make some
great plays and we'll see what happens.
Speaker 2 (02:15:40):
Kickoff squibbed goes out of bounds at the forty. If
there's one downfall for this Waynsfield Goshen team, it's been
the kicking game. So Elgin will have great field position
to start this drive.
Speaker 1 (02:15:51):
Yeah, that's a gift for Elgin to get right there.
A very short kick, kind of a pooch kick. I'm
not sure it was on the side. It would just
kind of drop it over the first line. But Elgin
is going to get great field position, and you know,
the way their offense is running, if they can pick
up some first downs and get it done, plenty of
time in this quarter in the game, and so they've
(02:16:13):
got to get fired up again. That last series their
offensive line kind of took over and Harrison. With Harrison
running the football, let's see if they can.
Speaker 10 (02:16:21):
Do it again.
Speaker 2 (02:16:22):
And I would imagine Elgin going to try to take
some time on this drive too. And let's remember Elgin
doesn't necessarily kick extra points. They do have a freshman
kicker we saw her the first game that can make
some extra points, but they generally go for two. And
I would imagine if they score, that's what they're going
(02:16:43):
to do. First down and ten at the forty five
yard line, a dive play to Van Gundy and he
picks up about four.
Speaker 1 (02:16:52):
Yeah, it looks like they've got that reverse pivot handoff
down a little bit, and that was a play they
fumbled on in the first half. And I really like
Van Gundy running the football. He's steady, you know, he's
he's a senior. Excuse me, he's a junior playing at homecoming.
And you've got to give the ball to these guys,
Harrison and Van Gundy and let them go to work
(02:17:14):
on their home field.
Speaker 2 (02:17:16):
Second down and six, ball is at the Comet forty
nine yard line nine thirty four in counting twenty one
two fourteen. Wainsfield Goeson on top and Harrison takes the
sweep and takes it up ahead for about three yards
and he almost didn't have a handle on that ball.
Speaker 1 (02:17:32):
Yeah, the handoff is kind of low. He took it
down below his waist. Just that's something they've got to
clean up or they're going to have problems. Third and short.
Very manageable third down play and a wing tee. This
is a very good situation you want to be in.
You don't want to be down. But in this situation,
(02:17:54):
they've got great field position or not in a hurry
and real short third down situation here down in distance.
Speaker 2 (02:18:01):
And comments want to keep possession, that's for sure. As
Waynsfield Goshen has been able to strike quickly Van Gundy
with the run and he was stuffed. There was no gain.
In fact, they gave him a loss on that.
Speaker 25 (02:18:14):
Yeah.
Speaker 10 (02:18:14):
I like Harrison there on the outside with the third down.
Speaker 1 (02:18:17):
Now they're going to go fourth down and it's you know,
almost have to go you don't have to go forward here,
but looks like they are. They're going to bring Buyers
back out a quarterback and let's see, I would almost
bet Harrison's going to get the football.
Speaker 10 (02:18:36):
He has to go an off tackle.
Speaker 2 (02:18:38):
Fourth down and four at the Comet forty nine yard line.
Bowers up under center, hand off to Harrison, he cuts
it back up the middle. He gets the first down.
Speaker 1 (02:18:48):
You got to give him the football until his tongue's
hanging out. They ran overload in balance to the right,
but he didn't even get all the way to the outside.
Speaker 8 (02:18:59):
Eric.
Speaker 1 (02:19:00):
Once he got past the center, he cut up and
he knew what his job was, and that's to pick
up the first down.
Speaker 10 (02:19:05):
Comets going quickly.
Speaker 2 (02:19:06):
Comets right up at the Lion's scrimmage. Now they're blowing
the whistle because there was a towel on the field.
Speaker 1 (02:19:13):
The quarterback had one in his on his waist early
in the game.
Speaker 10 (02:19:18):
Maybe they told him to take it out.
Speaker 2 (02:19:20):
Harrison on the sweep takes it back up the middle,
a good gain of about three there.
Speaker 1 (02:19:24):
Second down. Yeah, I mean that Toile's been a problem
from the very Get go, no tiles, no gloves, Eric,
we don't need any of that stuff.
Speaker 10 (02:19:35):
Just play football. Get up there and go.
Speaker 2 (02:19:37):
Right up to the lion scrimmage. The Comets wing on
each side, single back and now two men in motion
at the same time. Each wing went too much confusion.
And this is the thing, this is what coach Winslow
was talking about. These guys are making these mistakes that
they know better. I mean there's one thing, just the
(02:19:57):
aggressive mistakes, but that right there is infusion.
Speaker 1 (02:20:00):
Yeah, he just needed to have a little bit more
patience there. Now they're forced, you know, when you're having
second and now eleven or twelve or third and eight.
Those are tough down in distance situations for this type
of offense.
Speaker 2 (02:20:14):
Seven thirty and counting until the end of this game.
Comments with the ball second down in thirteen at the
tiger forty seven, there's a pitch to the outside harrison
up across the forty five to about the forty one
yard line, so gets back about all the penalty yardage.
Speaker 1 (02:20:35):
He still looks fresh. Eric, I'd give him the ball
until he can't take it anymore. Yeah, he looks really strong.
He picked up about what six seven yards on that
carry pretty much effortly. They're getting really good blocking even
to the short side of the field. I think he
gets to the open field and he can outrun him.
(02:20:55):
So Comets have got to keep feeding him. If it's
going to be four down territory, give them the opportunity
to pick up a first down.
Speaker 2 (02:21:03):
Here they're down in seven and now Waynsfield Goshen takes
a time out first time out of the second half
for Waynsfield Goshen, we'll go ahead and keep it right here, coach.
I think what Elgin's wanting to do here is take
(02:21:23):
as much time as they can without not having some
time to get the ball back if they score, but
take as much time to put the pressure on Goshen,
especially if they can score get the two point conversion.
But they still got a little ways to go.
Speaker 1 (02:21:40):
Yeah, well, the first priority to score. I'm not sure
their offense is sophisticated enough to worry about how much
time they could be.
Speaker 10 (02:21:50):
But they've got to score.
Speaker 1 (02:21:51):
They're behind in the football game, so that's their first
thing with seven sixteen to go. I mean, even if
they score with five minutes to go, then they got
to worry about that situation when that comes. But they've
got a score, they'll probably go for two and whatever
happens if they go ahead by one, then they they're
gonna have to play defense regardless. So I just think
(02:22:12):
that this is it right here, this series. Right here,
they cannot give the ball back to Waynesfield, all.
Speaker 2 (02:22:18):
Right, Third down and seven, ball is at the Goshen
forty one yard line. I formation for the Commons stacked
eye ball goes to Harrison to the left side out
the forty to the thirty five, and he is across
for a first down as they take out one of
(02:22:40):
the coaches.
Speaker 1 (02:22:43):
And really glad that that was an all weather track
as the coach went back on his back and really
he came up really quickly and bounced back and went
back on the sideline.
Speaker 2 (02:22:56):
Well, you don't let him see a sweat. Yeah, you
don't want them to think it's you got hurt. He's
and hopefully he's not hurt, but if he is, he's
just grinning and bearing it. That is a Matthews Hontakra
first down up ahead to the thirty three yard line.
Speaker 1 (02:23:08):
That's why Scott deserves hazard pay because he's right down
in the thick of things too.
Speaker 2 (02:23:12):
That's right hand off straight ahead to Van Gundy and
he powers ahead to the thirty yard line. And there
was some hard hits on that run.
Speaker 1 (02:23:22):
It looks like he Scott put his sweatshirt on. He's
down there with all his friends in the corner there. Yeah,
I don't blame him though.
Speaker 2 (02:23:30):
I was thinking about bringing a sweatshirt and then I
got I got sidetracked, and I'm okay right now in
the press box, but if I walk downstairs, I'm probably
gonna be cold.
Speaker 10 (02:23:40):
Big, big second down play.
Speaker 2 (02:23:43):
Overload to the right, and it goes that way to
Harrison and he gets tackled right away, and coach, what
did you see there?
Speaker 1 (02:23:53):
I'm seeing he's got to bounce it to the outside.
There's a lot of green grass. When I used to
talk to my grandma about football, she she would always say,
run where they're not standing, And so that's kind of
the philosophy that you got to take run where they
ain't and get to the outside. And I think Harrison
bounces that to the outside. Those linemen aren't going to
catch him. No, He's really running hard with a lot
(02:24:14):
of fresh legs. So I think something to the outside
here could pay dividends for the comments.
Speaker 2 (02:24:20):
They're down in seven six oh three left in the
fourth period to Max in the backfield. Now counterplay and
that's stuffed right up the middle again. And I believe
that one was to Rhodes, and I mean they've run
that a lot.
Speaker 1 (02:24:38):
They faked a quick pitch to Harrison, which is a
play they haven't really run that much, and they brought
Rhodes back. He really hasn't been really effective at all
in this game, and so you know, I just think
that Harrison is their guy right now.
Speaker 2 (02:24:56):
So this is a big fourth down with five twenty five.
I've left fourth and six balance formation and bounce to
the right. The ball is on the left hash they
run to the short side. That is very confusing because
there's no room there and they do not pick up
the first down. Quarterback is faking the bootleg to the
(02:25:17):
right and there's nobody over there but a referee, so
it will be a turnover on downs. As a Waynesfield
Goshen player is down right now with an injury, and
you know, coach, we're not down there. We're not calling
plays or anything like that, so we we have nothing
(02:25:37):
that we can really say as to what makes sense
and doesn't make sense. But you know, it's it feels
like it was almost set up to where we're overloading
the wide side to get them to think that's where
we're going, and it just was a guest that didn't work.
Speaker 1 (02:25:54):
Yeah, they ran, they overloaded the right side and fake
the quick pitch and try to get roads and think
they you know, he was gonna pop it to the
left side of the center.
Speaker 10 (02:26:02):
But I'll tell you Waynsfield has really.
Speaker 1 (02:26:04):
Done a great job on that counter and uh, they
haven't really found a way to stop Harrison and that
right now. Uh, he's your guy. Looks like the young
man's up Waynsfield number five bred again and he's been
the man for them. And like Scott said, he's taking
a beating tonight and he's definitely you can tell he's
(02:26:27):
limping a little bit, but he's a tough kid. He's
still up there walking and really want to give him
almost like a cramp. It seems like a calf something
in the calf the way he's walking.
Speaker 2 (02:26:38):
I want to tip my cap to Waynsfield, Gohoshen because
this isn't on a deep bench. You know a lot
that I'd say everybody pretty much is playing both ways.
But this is a team that they play hard. Yeah,
I mean, you wouldn't think a team with this lower
numbers would play this hard and physical.
Speaker 1 (02:26:55):
And they love to play. It looks like they love
to play. They've got something. They've got something about them.
They're like a they've got the savvy, don't they Yes,
they know the game and they're well.
Speaker 2 (02:27:05):
Coached pitch out to the outside, and that's going to
be a loss that pitch to Barnes and I think
about a two yard loss on that one second down.
Speaker 1 (02:27:15):
Yeah, it looked like Shepard was one of the guys
over there. It looks like he's got his second win
and real nice play.
Speaker 10 (02:27:23):
Now, what do you think is coming?
Speaker 1 (02:27:26):
Well, the dbs have got to be ready to go
here because this is a situation where they like to
run that.
Speaker 2 (02:27:31):
Boot action time out. No another player down for Waynsfield
Ghoshen right now. Ontario update up thirty four to seven
over pleasant So, Ontario. After having a first half where
(02:27:52):
it was pretty close, it would appear they kind of
found their groove.
Speaker 1 (02:27:59):
Yeah, looks like, you know, they can wear you down
their defensive line and offensive line. They're big and strong
Ontario we're talking about, and they've got some really good
backs to go with Miller and boy, that's why they're undefeated.
They've got a very, very quality team in this late
part of the season.
Speaker 2 (02:28:19):
Other scores right now in the third period, Shelby's up
over River Valley forty two to twenty one, Mohawk twenty four,
Winford thirteen. Seneke's twenty Colonel Crawford fourteen, Highland up twenty
one to seven over Gallion, and Northwestern up nine to
seven over North Union. Quickly down to Scott, Scott.
Speaker 22 (02:28:42):
You know, I was talking to a buddy of mine
who's a defensive coordinator for one of the teams in
the MOAC, and they played Ontario recently and they got
beat pretty hard, pretty bad. And I texted him, I said, so,
what did Miller do to you guys? And he said
anything he darn well wanted, And yeah, they can do that.
Speaker 10 (02:29:05):
You're right.
Speaker 22 (02:29:06):
They got some great backs with Miller, and they scored
in big bunches. And you know, when we watched that
game against River Valley, it was a flurry at first
and then River Valley was able to temper them. But
Voluntaria is a good squad. We're going back at the
game here.
Speaker 2 (02:29:22):
Boys, second down and long and no gain on that one,
maybe a yard, And it looks to me like Waynesfield
Goshen knowing they got the lead, even though they're back
in their own territory, really content with just trying to
run this clock down now at four h five.
Speaker 1 (02:29:40):
Yeah, they're definitely not going to do anything to stop
the clock here. If the game was over, I would
have been somewhat right about the time. So, I mean,
you know that was just a gas. But three forty
seven a go Waynesfield through ball probably a little more.
Speaker 10 (02:30:02):
You know.
Speaker 1 (02:30:03):
They came off of a season where they threw it
a lot last year, didn't they air? Yeah, they ran
the spread for years and then this year, new head coach,
they switched to the wing tea and yeah, they're they're
getting the play in as late as possible. Lined up
up under center, hand off to the left side and
cut back and that is a first down. Boy, I
(02:30:26):
thought I thought Elgin had him stopped and that was Brettingham.
A nice cutback there, and that's a Matthew Hontaker first down.
That hurts Elgin. Yeah, anytime you can pick up a
first down in you're less than four minutes and the
comments are going to have a hard time stopping the
clock here, and it's wound up running with three eleven
(02:30:49):
to go. They're taking their good old time. That's wayne'sfield
is and I just look for the quarterback to keep
it or just a little hand off.
Speaker 10 (02:30:59):
He is not in a big hurry.
Speaker 2 (02:31:01):
At all, No, not at all and again, this Waynefield team,
they're not a big team. I'm not even talking about
numbers wise, they're not. The players aren't big, but they
definitely are physical.
Speaker 10 (02:31:14):
Yeah, no question about it.
Speaker 1 (02:31:15):
And like I say, they've got that it factor of
having the savvy and you could just tell the kids
are well coached and they know the game of football.
Speaker 2 (02:31:23):
First and ten pitch to the outside. Now cutback and
there's a stop. But not after about a game of
four and that was Barnes on the carry and Elgin
goes ahead and takes time out.
Speaker 1 (02:31:37):
Yeah, if you watch any football at all on Saturdays,
or even watch it on Sundays, there's always some announcer
that talks about clock management. And we've talked about it
at nauseum, I know.
Speaker 10 (02:31:50):
But this is fun to watch.
Speaker 1 (02:31:52):
Last week River Valley playing Harding and they were up
seven to nothing. Pretty much the whole game could have
gone either way. On a break four, Harding could have
punched one in, tied it up, whatever. But coach Waddles,
you know, decided that we're going to take the air
out of the ball and we're going to win the
game seven to nothing. As it turned out, they were
(02:32:14):
able to get field position and kick a field goal.
And even when they were up ten to nothing, they
had another opportunity to try to go a march and
the score again. But he chose to hand the ball
off and and they you know, instead of trying to
pad stats and that type of thing late in the game.
He understood what the what the object of the game was.
(02:32:35):
He knew that and it did a great job of
just shortening the game and getting out of there with
a win. So it's great to see when coaches do that.
Speaker 2 (02:32:42):
So it's second down and six, and one thing I've
noticed here on these running these pitches, it's the cutback
that's killing Elgin because they're stopping it. But then the
running back is cutting back. Now a hand off to
the left side, a gain of about one maybe two,
brings up a third Elgin takes its second time out.
Speaker 1 (02:33:01):
Well, when you have a team like Waynsfield that knows
how to play and the staff knows how to win
in these situations, they are tough to beat because they
just know, hey, we have the ball. It's just like
you're up five points in basketball and there is a
minute to go in the game. It's very difficult to
beat a team like that that knows how to win
(02:33:22):
and how to take care of the basketball.
Speaker 10 (02:33:24):
So it's the same way here.
Speaker 1 (02:33:25):
They're taking care of the ball and it's a very
frustrating thing for the comments right now being down twenty
one to fourteen with two twenty four to go.
Speaker 2 (02:33:33):
Yeah, and that's the thing to notice here with Waynsfield
Goshen too. Not that Elgin has not been successful in
the past, but Goshen has had quite a few years
of success in a row. And some teams they just
when they get in these situations, they know they know
what to do. And again not saying Elgin doesn't know,
but I think that's what we're seeing here is a
(02:33:54):
team that's very familiar with being in this situation.
Speaker 10 (02:33:57):
Exactly.
Speaker 1 (02:33:58):
We had a situation where a punt went, wasn't caught,
it deflected off of the offensive man's helmet, I believe
last week, and the defense didn't jump on the ball,
or you know, kids running down didn't jump on the ball.
I think, you know, that's just the situation where they
have to understand that the ball is live and it's
(02:34:18):
up to them to jump on it.
Speaker 10 (02:34:19):
So all the you know, football.
Speaker 1 (02:34:21):
Could be a complicated sport, but it could also be
a simple sport. Third and four and Waynsfield Goshen went
right up to the ball and I think they were
trying to get Elgind to jump. Elgin did not jump,
so they call a timeout. Elgin with one timeout, Goshen
I believe has two.
Speaker 2 (02:34:39):
But this is a huge third and four right here
for the comments if they can get the ball back though,
And this is one of the things that maybe I
just don't understand some of the intricacies of the wing tee.
It's not an offense that's built to make up long yards.
It's a white, weary down offense. And when you have
to run that two minute offense, I'm often left wondering
(02:35:01):
what do you do if you're in a wing team. Well,
and they also if you got to remember Waynsfield had
a fourth down and threw the throwback and they picked
up big gain. Do you want to throw the ball
here to pick up the first down or do you
want to run the clock if you have an incomplete pass.
Now the Comets get it back, the clock stops and
they don't have to use use a timeout. So what
(02:35:23):
do they do here? They're gonna run the football? Running
it straight ahead and that's a first down and that
might be just enough as Brandingham runs it ahead for
the Matthews hondakor a first down. And that was just guts, Yeah,
that was I want it more than you do right there.
Speaker 1 (02:35:41):
He just ran straight He didn't make a cut. He
basically ran it, got the first down and went down,
got hit pretty good by the comets. But like you said,
two eleven to go, there's no two minute warning in
high school football. But there's no way that Algin can
stop the clock. I think they still have one time
(02:36:03):
out less they.
Speaker 10 (02:36:04):
Call it time out.
Speaker 1 (02:36:05):
But Waynesfield, it's really you know, like we say, refreshing
to see when you when you watch really a well
coached team.
Speaker 2 (02:36:18):
And Waynsfield up to the line of scrimmage, they handed
off to the left and break through and now another
first down and now it's just academic here for Waynesfield.
Speaker 10 (02:36:31):
He had two hands on the football. The offensive line.
Speaker 1 (02:36:34):
You know, we thought they were down and out in
the first quarter, but it seemed like they got stronger
as the game progressed. And you know, it really wasn't
the running game for Waynesfield, was it.
Speaker 10 (02:36:45):
It's was a passing game for him.
Speaker 2 (02:36:47):
Elgin takes their final time out. It's Matthews Hondaker a
first down at the forty four yard line of Elgin
and UH one point thirty six left in this game.
And it's again, if you had been listening at the
(02:37:10):
beginning of this game, it really.
Speaker 1 (02:37:13):
The first half.
Speaker 2 (02:37:15):
For most of the first half sounded like Elgin was
just in control. Really that that turning point was that fumble,
and then the very next play was that deep pass
with the uncovered receiver that no one saw. And it
seems like since then, even though Elgin has battled back,
(02:37:37):
they've been kind of in disarray.
Speaker 1 (02:37:39):
Well, sometimes when you run a trick play against somebody
and they get kind of caught not knowing what you know,
what happened, it kind of it kind of really shocks you. Yeah,
and it's hard to bounce back from that. It's like, oh, man,
they really duped us and we weren't ready and now
and so you know, the kids try to make up
(02:38:00):
for it, but sometimes it takes the wind out of
your sail, out of their sales. And I think you're right,
it actually did kind of do that. But comments did
fight back and put together that drive and and tie
it up. But once again Waynsfield caught him napping on
some passes and went down and made the their third
(02:38:22):
score and comments haven't been able to get the ball
back and do too much after that.
Speaker 2 (02:38:26):
So it is under a minute left in this game.
Wayneesfield just taking all their time and they're going to
kneel on the ball, and now they just go back
and now kneel down. Not quite sure why he ran
(02:38:47):
backwards other than to just take some time off the clock.
Speaker 10 (02:38:50):
Yeah, that's why he did that. But now.
Speaker 2 (02:38:55):
Everybody's lining up and that will be the final score
here at Elder. Unfortunate for the comments, they go down
on homecoming night twenty one to fourteen to Waynsfield Goshen.
Speaker 1 (02:39:10):
So we'll take a break.
Speaker 2 (02:39:12):
When we come back, we will talk about the scoring
and come up with the filler Credit Union player of
the game again. The final score here at Elgin Waynsfield

Speaker 28 (02:40:27):
The Matthews Honda Acura High School Game of the Week.
Speaker 2 (02:40:36):
Back here at Elgin High School. Final score. Elgin goes
down to Waynsfield gosh In twenty one to fourteen, and
let's just run through the scoring real quick. Elgin got
on the board first the six forty three mark of
the first period, five yard touchdown run by Quentin Harrison.
Two point conversion failed, but Elgin was up six to nothing.
(02:40:57):
It remained that way through the first quarter, and then
in the second quarter, at the three fifty two mark,
Waynsfield Goshen was able to score on a three yard
touchdown run by Barnes. Point after was good and Waynsfield
Goshen was able to take the leads seven to six.
That's how we went into halftime. In the third quarter,
(02:41:18):
Waynsfield Goshen scored again at the seven thirty eight mark
a fifty two yard reception by Weightman.
Speaker 1 (02:41:25):
The pat was good.
Speaker 2 (02:41:28):
That gave Goshen a fourteen to six lead over Elgin.
But Elgin came right back and at the two thirty
six mark, Harrison had a twenty yard touchdown run. Two
point conversion was good and that tied the score at fourteen.
So going into the fourth period, we really thought.
Speaker 10 (02:41:51):
It was.
Speaker 2 (02:41:53):
It was going to be quite a game, and it
was there into the fourth period, but then Waynesville Goshen
able to take the lead for good thirty yard touchdown
reception to Brennigham. The point after was good and Waynesfield
Goshen went up twenty one to fourteen. Elgin had a
couple chances but just could not put it together for
(02:42:16):
a final score to at least tie the game or
take a lead, and unfortunately this is ends up being
a loss for the comments. Yeah, Harrison really ran the
ball well tonight Van Gundy when they needed a short
yard he to pick up first downs did a nice job.
(02:42:37):
I thought the offensive line came off the ball hard,
especially in the beginning and then also in that drive
to get their fourteenth the second touchdown. But I'll tell
you the defense played hard. I led by Shepherd and
we'll talk about him in a little bit, but I'll
tell you they played their hearts out, but they got
(02:42:58):
caught nap against Waynsfield passing game and Waynesfield, you know,
run the wing teeth. They're gonna run play, play play,
run the ball, run the ball, and then they're gonna
run the boot action and uh and uh and throw
it and that's what they did, and that's what that's
what I think kind of took the wind out of
the sales and then the defensive backs were a little
(02:43:19):
gun shy coming up and uh they were able to
then continue to run the ball. And the young man
for Waynsfield, uh number number five, I believe Brent Brenningen
or Brennangan or whatever.
Speaker 1 (02:43:35):
He uh, he really played his heart out too. So
they they deserve to win tonight.
Speaker 10 (02:43:40):
Man.
Speaker 1 (02:43:40):
They they came and they they came on a business
trip and you could just tell by their coaches after
the game how elated they were, uh that they beat
the comments and I think they were the underdog coming in,
but boy, they came to.
Speaker 10 (02:43:53):
Play, all right.
Speaker 2 (02:43:54):
Scott is down with our killer Craig Union Player of
the Game, than Shepherd for Elgin.
Speaker 23 (02:44:02):
Piller credit Union Player of the Game, Land and Shephard.
Speaker 22 (02:44:05):
Congratulations, young man, maybe not the result that your team
was looking for tonight, but you've made some great plays
and I really hitting hard.
Speaker 23 (02:44:13):
What were your thoughts as you were playing that game?
Strong and you know, just hit them, hit them as
as I can every year.
Speaker 9 (02:44:20):
You know, the play is hard to play stuff, and
it's it's a game we gotta we gotta struggle through
and you gotta find a way through.
Speaker 22 (02:44:25):
Yeah, you were definitely hitting hard for most without a
die on both sides of the ball.
Speaker 23 (02:44:32):
It's kind of a relatively clean game.
Speaker 22 (02:44:34):
I know you two are big rivals, but what's it
like when you're playing a team that's you know, kind
of mirrors you offensively.
Speaker 23 (02:44:41):
How does that help you prepare?
Speaker 9 (02:44:43):
It's awesome actually because I see that offense daily on
you onn on offensive line, so I just know what
to do.
Speaker 10 (02:44:50):
What do you through? Where to go?
Speaker 8 (02:44:52):
Yeah?
Speaker 22 (02:44:53):
Absolutely, and you could tell by the way you're shooting
gaps staying up on the firm on the line. Next
week moving forward upper sight of the valley. What's the
thought process for you the team defensively going into next week?
Speaker 28 (02:45:08):
That's tough game.
Speaker 23 (02:45:09):
You know they've like again they play hardy end, but.
Speaker 25 (02:45:14):
You know it's got to come out execute, can phil
can't have penalt bes and it's that door thing and succeed.
Speaker 9 (02:45:20):
And you know, play each in football.
Speaker 23 (02:45:22):
Right, Thanks congratulations, land.
Speaker 10 (02:45:27):
All right?
Speaker 2 (02:45:28):
Thanks Scott and Landon Shepherd are Pillar Credit Union player.
The game, albeit in a losing effort. He definitely made
himself known out there on the field.
Speaker 1 (02:45:38):
Yeah, I'm just going to say, what a classy young
man to be able to come over you know, loss
left is he emptied his bucket out on the field
for the comments tonight and was gracious enough to come
over and talk to Scott and and uh, well that's tough.
I know, as a coach and even as a player,
you know a loss. You know, as hard as he plays,
(02:45:58):
you know that he's his guts are her right now.
But for him to come over there and do that,
I congratulate him on that. What a fine young man.
All right, let's throw it back down to Scott.
Speaker 22 (02:46:08):
Scott, we got coach winso here. Honestly, turnovers improved Black Up.
Speaker 23 (02:46:16):
Yeah, I mean we still hurt ourselves though.
Speaker 9 (02:46:18):
I mean we were playing.
Speaker 23 (02:46:20):
A defense where we're not supposed to have receivers.
Speaker 9 (02:46:22):
Behind us, and they killed us on the big play.
I mean, you know, we knew what they were going
to do coming in running the ball, and I thought
we played the run fairly well. I don't know what
the stats were, but you know, when they needed big plays,
they were able to get them through the air and
our inconsistency on offense and then inability to finish there
in the second half. I mean, we got gotta be better, and.
Speaker 23 (02:46:40):
You did mention and it.
Speaker 22 (02:46:42):
You know, on our talk this week, you mentioned they
have a great play action and that really showed tonight.
Speaker 23 (02:46:47):
You also kind of at times you seem like.
Speaker 22 (02:46:50):
You were almost tackling from behind rather than meeting the player.
Almost tackling from behind. Yeah, I thought that they I mean, stematically,
they do a really good job. I think you got
good players, you know, So we were chasing a little
bit there in the second half, and you know, I'll
have to watch the film and figure out what we
were doing, but I mean we were playing with great
effort and I thought our guys were setting the edge. Ok,
there's a few times when they.
Speaker 9 (02:47:09):
Got outside of us, but at the end of the day,
we got to rally up. Eleven is want to make tackles,
and we didn't do that in the second half, and
when we needed our defense to make a stop there
at the end with four minutes left. You know, if
if I was told, hey, you got four and a
half minutes, you're you're opponents starting on the own twenty
and your defense is out there. I'm like, Okay, we
got a chance, and we had our chance. We just
couldn't couldn't finish them.
Speaker 22 (02:47:28):
And there again, there are positives to take away from
it again, and there's a really clean game for both teams.
Considering your rivalry and the importance of the game. How
do you take some of those positives? I mean, even
the exchange was better the second half. How do you
take some of those scenes going in the upper side
of the valley next week?
Speaker 9 (02:47:48):
Well, like I said earlier, I mean like our kids
were taking coaching and they're doing everything we asked them too.
They're giving us great effort. We just we just need
to keep improving. We just got to keep getting better
and better. And you know, we'll coach our tails off.
We can try to keep building. Tomorrow morning, we'll build
them back and we'll love them tonight and build them
back up tomorrow and and be ready to work on Monday.
Speaker 10 (02:48:07):
And that's all we can do.
Speaker 9 (02:48:08):
You know, we got three games left against three really
good league opponents, and we got to finish strong.
Speaker 23 (02:48:12):
That's the only choice, right on.
Speaker 22 (02:48:14):
Thanks coach Wins though, sorry about the result, but congratulations.
Speaker 2 (02:48:19):
All right, thank you coach Winslow, and I like what
he said there. Uh, tonight, we're going to love them
up and then tomorrow will work on things. And I
think that's the most important thing when it comes to coaching.
Speaker 1 (02:48:32):
Well, I'll tell you these kids, Uh, there's there's a
lot of kids walking the halls in all these schools
across the state of Ohio and really across the United States.
I wish they could be out there and put in
the time and won't do it and wish they could
be out there to experience this. And there's nothing like
me in a part of a team. I don't care
what sport it is where you're all working together as one.
(02:48:53):
He said, you know, we needed to be eleven, you know,
eleven to eleven on one there and uh, eleven is
one and and that's the truth. And you got to
tip your hats off also to the coaches and all
these that you know, the assistant coaches and people who
put in this time to take a risk of feeling
the way coach Winslow does tonight. And Uh, anybody that's
(02:49:15):
played a sport and has put in time and effort
the way they these guys do and come out with
you know, you know, without a positive, you know event
at the end. And uh, but boy, I'll tell you what,
you got to tip your hat to all these all
these guys because they're working with these kids and trying
to make them better citizens and student athletes.
Speaker 2 (02:49:33):
And I'm watching right now coach Winslow is talking to
the head coach for Waynsfield Goshen. They're just alone on
the field talking and that's what you like to see too.
And and Scott brought up a good point that we
really didn't talk much about. Not a lot of penalties
in this game, and a very clean game, a hard
hitting game. It was almost like just a respectable game.
(02:49:56):
Both these teams really respected each other and you could
feel it.
Speaker 10 (02:50:00):
Yeah, they really respect each other.
Speaker 1 (02:50:02):
And you know, when it all comes down to it
with you know, and we haven't even mentioned it with
the weather that it's been going on in the southern
part of the United States and the tragedy down there
with lives lost and all of that, and this is
just a football just a football football game, and these
kids are out there working hard. But I'll tell you what,
it just kind of puts things in perspective that you know,
(02:50:23):
Sun's going to come up for all of us tomorrow hopefully,
and we're gonna all move on, but we like to
pray for all those people down down South and hopefully
they can get back.
Speaker 2 (02:50:33):
Absolutely, and a lot of classiness here on both sides
of the field tonight. They the Comets and the Tigers
with a lot of classiness out there. And I think
both teams represent their schools very well. And it was
just a really good game to watch and very old school.
I was going to mention something to you, coach, I
(02:50:55):
just realized, like I can't remember the last time that
I watched a game where I believe both teams had
a person from the sideline coming and giving the play.
It's been forever since we've seen that. It was just
really old school. And for guys like you and I,
as much as we love the high scoring offenses and
(02:51:16):
it can be fun, it is a lot of fun
to watch.
Speaker 1 (02:51:19):
Old school football. Yeah, if you'd like to watch a
strategy and really throughout this course of the game, this
was the kind of game where you didn't really know
who was going to win because Elgin came out first
and then they put a shot on Waynsfield, and then
Waynsfield fought back and went ahead by one point before
(02:51:39):
the half, and then Elgin came back and you know,
Waynsfield got another touchdown, but Elgin punched back and then
Waynsfield ended up winning. But before we go off, I
like to thank Jason Hicks again for athletic director of Elgin.
We really like coming out here. They really treat us
really good. They we have a special place here in
(02:52:00):
the press box, so we like to come out and
and support really promote the kids in the school. Well,
and I don't know, you know, we haven't talked about
it much, but you you were one of the people
that constructed this press box, so it's got to feel
good coming out here every once in a while and
seeing your handiwork.
Speaker 10 (02:52:17):
Yeah, it's really kind of surreal. You know.
Speaker 1 (02:52:22):
If I multiplied thirty eight years times one hundred and
eighty days, that's just a minimum number of times I
drove to Elgin. And that's not even counting the trips
out to change the rain train in the summer with
the boys and and just wow.
Speaker 9 (02:52:40):
That.
Speaker 10 (02:52:42):
Went really fast and wouldn't have had it any other way.
Speaker 2 (02:52:45):
Well, it was a great atmosphere here tonight for homecoming,
and again we love coming out to Elgin. Thank you
Jason and all of Elgin. They always treat us all
so well and we really enjoy coming out here. Wish
it could have been a winning night for the Comments,
but unfortunately they did go down and defeat to Waynsfield Goshen. Well,
(02:53:07):
we thank you for joining us tonight here at Elgin.
Next week week Waynsfield Goshen will be at Perry and
Elgin will be hosting Upper Side of Valley. We will
be at River Valley next week as the Vikings host Highland.
Now stick around for the scoreboard show. Racelin Graver and
Alec Bikleman will cover all of the area's games, plus
talk about the latest in college and pro football. We'll
(02:53:28):
join the conversation when we get there again. The final
score tonight, Waynsfield Goshen defeats Elgin twenty one to fourteen.
So for coach Couzio and Scott Cameron here with me
and Raceland back at the studio, I'm Eric Moseley. We
say so long everyone and hope you have a wonderful weekend.
Good night everyone.
Speaker 10 (02:53:46):
