Speaker 1 (00:00):
Joined me on the phone this morning is a founding
member of the band Lone Star. Lone Star is coming
to the historic Marion Palace Theater on Friday, May second
at seven thirty. You can get tickets information at Marionpalace
dot org. Ticket start at just forty nine dollars for
this show that should be fantastic. But welcoming to the
show is Dean Sam's from Lone Star. Dean, good morning.

(00:23):
How are you my friend?

Speaker 2 (00:25):
Hey, good morning, I'm doing awesome. Well, I'm doing awesome.

Speaker 3 (00:28):
Well.

Speaker 1 (00:29):
It is good to talk to you. Excited to see
you guys coming to the Palace. Got a chance to
see your show a few years ago. You guys were
in Marian and did the Marion Palace Theater or I
did the Marian Popcorn festivals. You can remember that beautiful
night in Marian a few years ago and it was
a great show. Looking forward to see you guys again
here in May. Now, obviously you're gonna come in. You're

(00:52):
going to play a bunch of hits that everybody's known
for close to the last thirty years, that have sold you, guys,
ten and a half million records. Those are the things
we're gonna hear. I'm almost positive at that show. But
you've got some new music coming on. Tell us a
bit about what you guys are working on right now.

Speaker 2 (01:09):
Yeah, we had a brand new record came out a
few weeks ago. It's called Iconic Volume one. And what
we did was it really this record came out very
organically because the way it started. We were out on
the road, out on tour, and you know, we do
soundcheck every day where each guy you know, checks their instruments,

(01:31):
their vocal mics, blah blah blah, and you know, and
we played through some songs just to kind of make
sure we can hear what we need to hear and
I can put on the best show for the fans.
So we were doing that and Drew walks up to
his mic and he's got his acoustic guitar and he's
checking his guitar and vocal mic and he starts singing
time after time by Cindy Lapper, which he had never

(01:51):
done before.

Speaker 3 (01:52):
It was just kind of weird.

Speaker 2 (01:53):
He did that that day, and next thing, you know,
Michael's chiming in playing along with him, and then Keiths
chimed in, and then I just said, all right, so
I started playing along and before you know it, you know,
the full bands playing, never rehearsed whatever, just playing the song.
And the talk started then like, man, would it be

(02:14):
cool if we did maybe a record that was all
iconic female artists. It doesn't matter what the genre is,
but the criteria was they had to be an iconic
female artist and it had to be an iconic song.
And so we started the conversation which turned into us
going in the studio, had each band member pick a

(02:36):
song and an iconic female artist, and then we went
in and cut this record and it's so great. We
did I mentioned time after time. We did That by
Cindy Lapper. We did Here Comes the Rain Again, which
was a great song from the Eurhythmics. We did Tribe

(02:57):
by Pink, We did You Make Having Fun Fleetwood Mac,
and then we did here, we did Rolling in the
Deep by Adele, and you know, we just put our
own spin on it. I'm so proud the guys in
the band allowed me. This is the seventh record I've

(03:19):
produced on us, and you know, and it is just
truly a work of art, and not because I have
anything to do with it, but the band and we
all just kind of poured our hearts into it, and
it really is a work of art. We even got
some high praise from two of the artists of the.

Speaker 3 (03:40):
Five artists that we did. We got some high praise.

Speaker 2 (03:44):
From Annie Lennox and from the Rhythmics and also from
Mick Fleetwood Fleetwood Mac about our versions of their songs,
which was just really cool to get that.

Speaker 1 (03:57):
That is awesome. We're talking to Dean SAMs from Own
Star coming to the Marryon Palace Theater on Friday, May
second at seven point thirty Marinpalace dot Org. For all
the details, Dan and all those songs. Each one of
you kind of picked a song and do I understand correctly?
Yours was Rolling in the Deep by Adele? Is that correct?
Is that the one you wanted to do?

Speaker 3 (04:16):
That is correct?

Speaker 2 (04:17):
And it was so funny because when I mentioned it,
you know, to the guys, I mean, you know, there
was there was some like, I don't know if we
want to mess with like an Adele song, yeah, because
you know, Adele's such an iconic singer and Rolling in
the Deep is such an iconic song, and it's like,

(04:37):
how can we.

Speaker 3 (04:38):
You know, can we pull it off?

Speaker 2 (04:40):
And but you know what, Drew is such an incredible singer,
and and then you know, we just kind of put
our own spin on it. I created this piano part
that is not part of the original at all. It's
it's a it's a very minor key mood the thing

(05:01):
that I do, this piano thing, and we added a
big orchestral string arrangement to it, and I mean it's
it's really it sets the tone in a in a
very different way for how the song is perceived. And
then and then once the crux of the song kicks in,
then people go, oh yeah, now you know you get
to hear a little bit more of how Adele did it.

(05:23):
But you know, it's just a great mixture of what
the original version was with kind of a new spin
of how we do it.

Speaker 1 (05:30):
Wow. I mean, you've had ten number one singles, you know,
everybody knows amazed, and we can run all the way
down the list. So with these iconic volume run volume
one songs, are you adding these at various times during
the shows? Are you picking out certain ones for this
week but maybe not next week? I mean, do we
should we expect to hear these when you're out this summer?

Speaker 3 (05:54):
Absolutely? You nailed it. I mean we have.

Speaker 2 (05:58):
We kind of it's it's kind of like an audible,
you know, like whoever your favorite quarterback.

Speaker 3 (06:03):
Is playing football, you know, they they have a.

Speaker 2 (06:05):
Play called and then they get up on stage and
depending on you know, how the crowd's reacting to different things,
we'll call it an audible and hey, let's do this
one tonight instead of that one.

Speaker 3 (06:13):
They're whatever. So, but they will get to hear.

Speaker 2 (06:20):
At least two or three of the songs off of
the iconic record on depending on the show that they
come to. Wow, don't hear two or three of the
five songs that we did?

Speaker 3 (06:32):
Oh?

Speaker 1 (06:32):
I love that? Well, you guys re recorded those ten
number ones and put that out back in twenty twenty three.
So that tells me that you're always looking to take
it to the next level, even stuff that you know
you did in the nineties and the two thousands. Let's
let's take it to the next level. That's amazing. Where
does all that energy come from. We're not young anymore right.

Speaker 3 (06:56):
Now, we're young at heart at heart.

Speaker 2 (06:59):
And I tell you what, the fans really motivate us
so much. I mean, we've had our three biggest touring
years of our career and that's crazy to say we've
been doing this thirty three years and yet the tours
have been bigger and more successful in the last three
years than they've been in our entire career, which is
that tells me that, you know, the fans are still

(07:21):
loving what we're doing, and we're bringing in a lot
of new fans that you know, maybe their parents are
bringing them.

Speaker 3 (07:27):
Along or whatever, and you know, you.

Speaker 2 (07:30):
Know, kids coming up and their parents saying, hey, you
should listen to this band, and then all you've got
to go see them live. And so our touring has
been bigger and better than ever, and I think that's
just a testament. It really gives us a lot of
energy to stay engaged and keep creating new content, new sound,

(07:50):
new music for the fans.

Speaker 3 (07:53):
To you know, attach themselves to us, because at the.

Speaker 2 (07:57):
End of the day, we're only as good or as
successful as the fans allow us to be. And I
think it's a great partnership between them and us because
you know, they keep showing up and we keep delivering,
and so everybody is winning always.

Speaker 1 (08:12):
I love that founding member of Lone Star, Dean Sam's
with us. Dean Lone Star All coming to town on Friday,
May second, seven thirty at the Historic Marion Palace Theater.
Get your tickets now at Marriyonnpalace dot orger stop out
at the box office and you can get your tickets.
I would get them asap. These are selling and going
to sell really fast, so make sure you get those

(08:35):
picked up. Let's talk for a minute about the Historic
Marion Palace Theater.

Speaker 3 (08:39):
Dean.

Speaker 1 (08:39):
You guys have played the largest outdoor venues in the world.
You guys have played some of the most iconic arenas
in the country, and now you're coming to a theater.
How is that show different? How do you prepare for different?
How do you put the show out different when you're
going to be in a smaller, intimate theater type adding

(09:00):
versus a giant, you know, arena or outdoor type thing.

Speaker 2 (09:04):
I think our musical approach is the same regardless, because
at the end of the day, the fans, you know,
they they expect to hear certain songs, and they're all,
we're always going to give that, always going to give
that to the fans. I think that the change happens
actually during the show, like it's not something that's rehearsed.

(09:29):
Like I feel like in a smaller intimate setting, it's
a lot you'll probably get a.

Speaker 3 (09:36):
Lot more of.

Speaker 2 (09:39):
Like interaction with us because you know, it's smaller. We
can see everybody's faces, we can see them react to things.

Speaker 3 (09:47):
You know.

Speaker 2 (09:48):
I can tell you when sometimes we play or play
some smaller theaters and stuff, and if I see somebody
that comes in a couple of minutes late, I'm probably
gonna stop us in our tracks and I'm gonna call
out people that showed up late, and you know, and
just have fun with the audience.

Speaker 3 (10:03):
Yeah, I think that's I think that's.

Speaker 2 (10:06):
Something we we love to do, is interact with the crowd.
It's a lot easier to do in a smaller venue
than like, you know, we've been out on some of
these huge festivals where you'll have thirty forty eight thousand
or more people in a stadium or something, and you know,
it's harder to interact that way with the bigger shows

(10:28):
like that. But these smaller intimate ones, I mean, it
is so much fun for us because we really can't
see everybody and they you know, and we can interact
with them in a way that we just can't do
with the bigger shows.

Speaker 1 (10:42):
Well, you're going to love the Palace. It is a
one of a kind historic theater. And I and you know,
like you and I are about the same age. It's
it's so cool when you get to see these and
you see what went into you know, rehabbing them and
getting them back, keeping them going, you know, and the
people that come then support it. It's just a beautiful
venues design for what you guys do, which is singing,

(11:05):
playing and everything. Uh, it's there. It's it's just going
to be a great night. So looking forward to having
you guys in town. May the second, that Friday night,
seven thirty lone Star will be at the historic Marion
Palace Theater. Get your tickets at Marionpalace dot org. You know,
you got started, you know, thirty three, thirty four years ago,
moving from Texas to Nashville, getting things going, you know,

(11:27):
newly married, all that kind of stuff. So when you
were out doing you know, all of that stuff thirty
five twenty, you know, twenty years ago versus today, How
have the challenge has changed for you as an artist
and a founding member of an iconic band? How how
how have you know those challenges changed from you know,

(11:48):
the nineties to today.

Speaker 2 (11:51):
Well, I think, uh, you know, back when we were
I guess, having having hits every time we put something
out at radio.

Speaker 3 (12:00):
I think back then, we spent so much time and
you know, I try.

Speaker 2 (12:06):
To live life without regrets, but you know, we all
were going to have some, I guess, And you know,
I think back when we were having all the hits
and life was crazy and touring and award shows and
making new records and putting out new records and then
moving on to the.

Speaker 3 (12:21):
Next project and whatever.

Speaker 2 (12:23):
I feel like, you know, in that time of our career,
it was it was always Okay, that's cool, what's next.

Speaker 3 (12:32):
All right, that's cool, what's next. That's cool, what's next.
And I think where we are now in our career.

Speaker 2 (12:38):
We really take in each moment as what it is
and really appreciate that moment, appreciate each other a lot more.
And so I can honestly say we are having more
fun right now than we have even when we were
having every song we put out go number one and

(13:02):
you know all that all that goes along with that,
winning awards and all that stuff. I think we're having
more fun now than then. Because you know, we we
have slowed down intentionally enough to enjoy the moments. We
get to spend a little bit more time with our families,
we get to spend a little more time with with
our fans out on the road.

Speaker 3 (13:22):
It's not like a hurry up, let's get to the
next place and do this.

Speaker 2 (13:25):
It's we're really enjoying each each and every show. Uh,
And and we create we really approach it like it
could be our last and we want to make each
one special. And it's not so much of Okay, what's next,
what's next, what's next, it's let's really enjoy this moment.

Speaker 3 (13:45):
That we have together. And it really puts a.

Speaker 2 (13:47):
New perspective and spend for us and the experience that
the fans get with the show too, because, uh, they're
going to see a group of guys on stage that
I truly love what they do, truly respect each other,
and truly appreciate the fans that show up and spend

(14:08):
their hard earned dollars on our show. And so they're
going to get an experience of connected, connected music and
connected hearts in a show that that's going to take
them back on this. I like to say at the
beginning of the show, I go, hey, we're going to
take you on a musical.

Speaker 3 (14:24):
Journey, and that's exactly what it is.

Speaker 2 (14:27):
And I think we all walk away with big smiles
on our faces and say that that was a great.

Speaker 1 (14:32):
