Each week we hear from one local business owner letting
us know where they are in their business journey and
how they got there. I'm here today with Vince Shafer,
owner and operator of Shaper Landscaping Supplies. Vince, thank you
very much for being here. Tell us a little bit
about your business.
Speaker 2 (00:20):
So we're located in the Middle River at sixty eight
fifteen Ebenezer Road. We basically carry all your landscape needs
and supplies top soil, spot like decorative stones, biomics, fil dirt,
and anything else you may need for like doing like
hard scaping, landscaping, anything in that nature.
Speaker 1 (00:40):
How long have you had this business and how did
you get into it?
Speaker 2 (00:44):
So we've been here probably about almost two years. So
I currently have thirty dumb trucks with his that's what
Shaper Inc. And I moved over to a new property
which was a family member friend and that's when we
took off with all the landscaping supplies.
Speaker 1 (01:00):
Well, so you've been doing this pretty much your entire life, yes, yeah,
And what are the key things? Like what does the
business do besides that sell the supplies? I mean, what
are some of the things you get called in to do.
Speaker 2 (01:10):
So we also do dumpster rentals and stuff like that.
But we go out and we look at some of
the properties. We'll clear some do some landscaping for people
and you know, remove some dirt and different topsail and
then put you know, screen topsail down. But we do
multiple things. We do hauling. As far as deliveries, we
do deliveries everywhere with we have thirty trix L dump trucks.
Speaker 1 (01:31):
What is the most popular item in your business to
purchase these days.
Speaker 2 (01:35):
I would say it would be tossils, screen cansel. So
we do everything like right from scratch, so basically we do.
We have our own so we're SAHA certified, which is
State Highway certified.
Speaker 1 (01:46):
Is that the most in demand landscaping material right now?
I mean I use a lot of it myself.
Speaker 2 (01:51):
It really is. It really is, absolutely yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:53):
You can't make enough of it? Huh no, not at all.
So what sets you guys apart from let's say, other
people who do similar things to what you do.
Speaker 2 (02:02):
So we're pretty quick on demand, Like I said, having
all those trucks, we can you know, same day delivery
and we get up pretty quick. We are open on
Saturdays from seven to one, which a lot of companies
around here to do the same thing as we are
not open on weekends. Yeah, yeah, so, and we just
try to make ourselves available as as you know, as
people need us.
Speaker 1 (02:20):
Do you work primarily with homeowners or contractors or both?
Who do you work with monts both?
Speaker 2 (02:26):
We work with everybody, but no customers too small, so
I mean they deliver a half a yard up to
five hundred times of material. Yeah.

Matter. That's one of my biggest problems if I have
a problem, maybe not specifically with what you do, but
with anything having to do with, you know, fixing up
the house or doing something outside a lot of and
I understand why a lot of companies they want the
big jobs, and if your job isn't worth more than
you know, a few hundred bucks or a few thousand
or whatever, they don't really want to spend too much
(02:56):
time it did, it seems so it's good that you
do the big end the small huh.
Speaker 2 (03:00):
Yeah, we do, We absolutely do. And we even cater
to a small you know, if you're locally close to us,
we give you a special delivery price because we understand
that not everyone has pickups for trailers to come get material.
Speaker 1 (03:10):
Yeah, very cool. So what areas do you cover if
somebody wants to be a customer in each area?
Speaker 2 (03:16):
We cover anywhere anywhere in Maryland and absolutely anywhere. But
I mean, of course, the closer you are at Austin
Middle River, right you're off Ebenezer Road. I mean, if
it's you know, for our local customers and that that's
anywhere surrounding six ninety five, we try to get them
a good delivery rate and help them out. It's once
a weekend.
Speaker 1 (03:30):
Yeah, So what's changed in your business?
Speaker 2 (03:32):
Do you think it's hit or miss? It's hit or
mess either way. I mean it's we've you know, I've
did a little bit of advertising to get ourselves out there,
so we've gotten a little bit more busy just being
being known and customer service goes a long way with
you know, our customers and things like that. But I
mean it's it's enter miss. You know, the rain makes
it tough sometimes, But I mean as far as change,
I think we're picking up as you know with clients
how and homeowners and stuff like that as well.
Speaker 1 (03:55):
Do you find it obviously it's harder in the winter
to keep things going on.
Speaker 2 (03:59):
It is it's very tough in the winter time once
it starts to get cold. A lot of people aren't
doing landscaping and things like that, so it gets tough.
But we also carry rock salt, you know, for for
that case two in the wintertime.
Speaker 1 (04:10):
But well, it sounds like you guys are doing well.
I mean, where do you guys see the future of
Schaeffer Landscaping Supplies going?
Speaker 2 (04:16):
Just looking to growl and get bigger. But it's it's
been moving forward so well.
