Speaker 3 (01:06):
Okay, a good deal.
Speaker 1 (01:08):
That's what day they plan on this week of seven?
Speaker 3 (01:10):
Are y'all playing? Are y'all? Are y'all gonna play in
the rain? Are y'all gonna be Okay, we're gonna we're.
Speaker 2 (01:14):
Gonna play Friday night? Right? What kind of like the
post office rain? Sweet hal snow man? What doesn't matter?
Great answer? So like the post office? Great answer? What
about that? Man?
Speaker 3 (01:27):
How y'all like it? What uniforms y'all wearing Friday night?
Speaker 2 (01:29):
Oh? Well, we're blue on blue Friday for the first
home game.
Speaker 4 (01:32):
Baby good, don't wear those I wouldn't wear those white pants.
Speaker 2 (01:37):
No, hey, look, I learned my lesson because I've been
married to a coach's wife. This year would be year nineteen,
and shoots been with me all by head coaching journeys.
And we played one time down at Holland Holme, Alabama.
If you've ever been to Holland.
Speaker 3 (01:54):
Home flying Squadron, so the fine.
Speaker 2 (01:57):
Squad which did y'all know this fact? Y'all know the
Eagles on seven Bridges Road. I do.
Speaker 3 (02:04):
I grew up in Montgomery. I know Woodley Road.
Speaker 2 (02:07):
Okay, I'll just making sure y'all know that's going down
toward house at Home, Alabama.
Speaker 3 (02:10):
That's right.
Speaker 2 (02:11):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (02:12):
Anyway, Hey, coach Jones, Coach Jeff's sixty. I'll be sixty
week we've been there, promised.
Speaker 2 (02:19):
Oh go ahead, Okay, Okay, I just didn't know if
people knew the history of that song.
Speaker 3 (02:23):
I'm just we messing with Alabama, so we mess.
Speaker 2 (02:27):
Because anyway, Uh went to Holland Holme if you know
anything about that place, That stadium sits in the bottom
behind their school, and man it had rain rain rain
three or four that en I listed to let our
kids choose then still to an extent, dude, let our
players have an impact on what we were on Fridays.
And they were like, oh that we're gonna wear all
(02:48):
white because white out, you know, big region game. It
was had to throw them pants away, that's that never, Yes,
threw them away. Well, my wife was so she was
as you would say, she was probably tickled. My granny
would say she was tickled at when she saw them
pants That next Saturday morning.
Speaker 3 (03:08):
You know what the remedy to that is, coach, what's
that astro turf synthetic turf?
Speaker 2 (03:14):
Well, I tell you it's to great equalizer. When it
comes that blue turf.
Speaker 1 (03:18):
It the guard would look good, wouldn't it, Man.
Speaker 2 (03:21):
It would be It would solve a lot of problems.
I'm not saying that it's gonna change how you play
or no, it's not gonna. It's not necessarily wins and
lost it, but it answers. It does answer a lot
of questions. It comes to weather and trying to sign
a place. You know, we dealt with a little bit
in the spring trying to find a place to practice
because of all the rain we had.
Speaker 4 (03:42):
Y'all do have a good draining system there at the
home field. Don't you have crown They kind of have
rolls off.
Speaker 2 (03:47):
Yep, Hey, look rain, if it does rain, Number one
in the field could probably use it answer rain because
it's been so dry. Number two from the numbers to
the numbers. With the way this thing's crowned, we'll be
fine with a little bit of rain. So uh, we'll
be taught.
Speaker 1 (04:05):
Well, there you go. Let's talk some football, all right,
Let's talk a little Let's talk about that whe go ahead, let.
Speaker 2 (04:10):
Me tell you. Let me tell you this about the
win at Aniston. I didn't know this too. We have
we have a young man that plays in the band
here boar guard. Name is Gary and he is a
huge football stat guy like tells me every week like
he already knows the spread for this week. Comes to me.
Today's like, coach, did you know this? I was, I
know what, Geary, He's like. Our win last Friday night
(04:31):
was the first time Andiston has lost at home since
two thousand four, So that kind of tells you. That
kind of tells you. And the first home loss that
Anderson has since twenty twenty in a regular season game,
so uh, that kind of tells you how tough it
is to play at that place. And our kids responded
(04:53):
even after about a ninety minute lightning delay, was able
to come out and uh get the stops when we
had too and made the big play when we had too.
So really proud of our young men and how they
responded last week.
Speaker 1 (05:07):
The last drive was ninety nine was it?
Speaker 2 (05:09):
What was it? A throwing kixy and we did that.
There was some stuff we left out there. We had
a couple of touchdowns called back. You know, those type
of things that we need to make sure this week
that we don't get caught enough situations and capitalize on
the opportunities that either special teams or the defense gave us.
So I think the kids will have responded well. We
(05:32):
had a lot of growth because we were put in
you know, like I told them of the day. Even
defensively we played, We played well the past couple of weeks,
I said, but we were put in this situation against
we Toka where we had to make a stop and
we think the made a few plays, ended up scoring
an out difference in the ballgame. In a close game
this past week, put in this almost the ideal same situation.
Had to have a stop put on the Defensi's back,
(05:54):
and they went and responded and made a play, calls turnover.
We were able to get in the venture formation and
get out of there with and so those type of
things are always positive and the growth from one week
to the next is always good.
Speaker 3 (06:06):
All right.
Speaker 1 (06:06):
Speaking of that growth at Marbury, you're sitting here at
one in one, you lose by a point, win by
two points. You're all over at coach. You play Marbury
this week, they are o and two. They'll talk about Marbory.
Speaker 2 (06:20):
Uh. Well, I know everybody said, we're still now there there.
Speaker 1 (06:24):
Well, I have to say their record that Look, you
could be and ot or you could be oh and
two and have a very good football team.
Speaker 2 (06:32):
So there you go. That's where we are with dis
group there. You know, we talked a little bit last
night about their size up front. They've got some big
kids up front. They've got some side on both sides
of the ball. Uh, They've got some kids, you know,
their offensive defensive line, or some bigger kids. I would
say in five A football, they're pretty they would be
(06:53):
a bigger five AS football team up front. So those
type of things are things that concern me, you know,
because you got to play you know, we want to
play a physical brand of football, and we've got you know,
to be able to do that, you got to control
a lot of scriptage. So those are the things we've
got to be too. Well. Friday night just like it
would be any Friday night. But I've been proud of
the past two weeks we've been able to kind of
(07:15):
do that, especially on the defensive side. We're getting better
on the offensive front. So I'm excited to see how
they respond this week.
Speaker 1 (07:21):
Yeah, once the season gets going, coach, how is it
for you as a head coach? It seems like it
comes around so quick once you start playing. Are you
able to really get out there and go, Okay, we
need to do this and.
Speaker 3 (07:33):
Let's try this.
Speaker 1 (07:35):
Are you able to do a lot of that coach
during your week of practice?
Speaker 2 (07:38):
Yeah? Well, the way we structure practice, I mean it
is like a standard of play, Like there is a
standard of things that we check boxes every week of
what we have to get taught, just so for us
there's no surprises on Friday night, if that makes sense,
Like we want to our job every week is to
cover as many games situation as possible, so that so
(08:03):
that when our kids are put in those situations on
Friday nights, it doesn't surprise. But that there's always things
that you learn from your team that you learn every week,
and things we have to get better at Boxton that
we need to continue to work on and things of
that nature. So I think that's always and you know,
I learned a lot from you know, working with Caleb
(08:26):
Ross about that there's always things you can you know,
everybody always, you know, used to accuse him of man, coach.
We meet a lot, we do this, but we never
we were never unprepared. And that's what I respected about
him so much, and I learned working with him so
much and took from him. It's just you know, yeah,
there's things we got to do, and there's bosses we
(08:47):
got to check because we're gonna make sure we're we're prepared.
Speaker 1 (08:50):
Justin Jones, head coach at boreguard with us on the
mark thirty six minutes past the hour, ball guard tomorrow
night home.
Speaker 3 (08:58):
Uh, Marvey, this is you're a home opener.
Speaker 1 (09:01):
My goodness, I didn't even think about that.
Speaker 3 (09:03):
I know you proud man.
Speaker 2 (09:05):
So oh it's always good to play at home. It's
always your I mean, we've had two We talked it
wasn't a bad trip, it wasn't and then it really
wasn't that bad Aniston. Of course, you know, it was
a longer trip, about two and a half hours, and
then you had to delay. But we still had a
good crowd. You know, both games, our folks come and
support us. And that's kind of what I told the
boys that said. You know, we had a conversation about
(09:25):
being at home and playing at home and how important
it is to play well at home just because you know,
the folks on Timber Avenue is gonna come. The folks
on Lee Road one sixty five, they're gonna come. You know,
all those cats may not make that trip to Aniston.
They may not can get over till we talka you know,
but Highways fifty one is gonna show up when we
play at home. So it's important for our young men
(09:46):
to understand that man playing that playing well at home
is important. That's that's a big deal. And so we've
got to make sure that we do that Friday night,
no matter you know kind of you know, no matter
what the weather is. That shouldn't that may determine, that
may factor in a little bit of game planning, but
it should not factor into the effort and the energy
and the enthusiasm and the passion that we play with
(10:07):
on a given Friday night. And the standard is still
the standard. You know.
Speaker 1 (10:11):
Yeah, I agree with that. I agree with that. Give
me some names some kids playing well, coach.
Speaker 2 (10:15):
Well, I think de Basically, we talked about our linebacker
crew last night. You know, ZJ. Grady is the you
know ZJ has been you know, he's been a staful
around here. Since I've been here, you know. Uh, so
he's playing really well. One of our senior linebackers, Caleb Pineer,
the other senior linebackers playing really well right now. The
(10:35):
youngster of the group is traced on. He's playing you know,
he's playing, stepping up and playing at a high level
right now. So that crew that you know is playing,
playing really well, and the expectation only raises. The bar
just raises every week for them, and that kind of
the things that we expect out of them. And then
you've got some guys on the defensive front that are
(10:55):
playing really well. Kat Reeves is a new name. Uh
you know, he he's been in the program, but man
just has really jump out. We knew that was as
a as a younger kid coming up. Man, this kid
could be special. If you know, the light switch clicked
and he got in on Friday nights, would it translated
so far? And he's playing really really give football scouting
(11:16):
holsticks are big nose scouting played some last year for US,
but it's just stepped it up more. And then the
only senior on the defensive front is kJ Goodman, and uh,
I've been really pleased just with uh the energy that
he's played with the past few weeks. Any kind of feeds,
I mean defensively, if you're if you're playing well and
you've got eleven eleven hats running around there to the football,
(11:38):
it kind of feeds, It feeds, you know, it kind
of builds off each other. It's that snowball effect. And
right now, that's what we've kind of pride ourselves on,
is turnovers, first downs and third downs and things of that.
The thing stats that we look at as a defense
that helps you control the game but also you know,
gives you an opportunity to be successful. The last couple
of weeks we've done a decent out of that, but
(12:01):
there's still so much room for improvement in many phases
of what we want to do. So, uh, we got
a great opportunity Friday night in front of our people,
and so that that's.
Speaker 1 (12:11):
That excite, no doubt it all to be good if
your team had a good week, coach, we always like
to find out about that practice.
Speaker 2 (12:18):
I thought we had a great week of prep. We've
had what we called talked about last night we called
NFL Days and so because we you know, holiday was Monday,
were our kids ride at school, on Tuesday, so you know,
they were just football those days. They came up, you know,
came up, got up early Monday, came in practice, getting
off rest of the day off, and then they bring
them back in till Tuesday afternoon, so they've had some
(12:41):
time to rest and you know, just just kind of
get into just football mode. And you know, coaches, let's
be honest, we enjoy those days too, you mean, because
you're don't have to. You know, a lot of our
coaches grinding teaching math and English and all that, and
they just get to come and and do their football
stuff and then and then get to go home. So, uh,
we've had a couple of those days and then kind
(13:01):
of getting back in our normal routine yesterday and then
our normal routine to be this afternoon. So again I
thought our preface been good. Uh. I think our kids
are ready to play. I think they're excited about playing
at home. Just needed you know, we need a crowd
to come here and be excited about what's going on.
Got some new stuff as far as stadium's concerned. You've
got the lights that will be that we'll you know,
(13:22):
I know they were owned, they're in the scream, but
a little different when you can you know, do some
of the things. But that kind of create the right
atmosphere with that type of stuff when you're talking about
Friday night, Friday night light. So excited about those type
of things that we'll be able to unveil. You know,
here at the stadium.
Speaker 1 (13:39):
All right, ought to be a good one, should be packed.
Got a chance to go to And I want to
know in the region at all starts and reagion games, don't.
Speaker 2 (13:45):
It it always does? Man? Region games are so important.
So uh, you know our kids, you know, I expect
our kids to play, to play hard, and you know
we correct some of the things that have caused us
and issues and kicking game and then offensive and defens
you know, we're we're excited about the opportunity. Probably night.
Speaker 1 (14:03):
What about your JV middle school Junior high middle.
Speaker 2 (14:06):
School sitting here two and oh went went, They've been
on the road the past two weeks, went to alex
City and uh one of that silly then at alex City,
then this past week went over to you follow up
and uh one you beat you fall us. So uh
middle school sitting there at two and O JV actually
tied the other night have never been a part of
(14:26):
the zero is zero tie. So uh really really both
schools you follow and ourselves, uh defensively, Man, just getting
after it the other night, and you know, and when
it comes to JV Man, a lot of guys getting
a lot of a lot of reps, you know, getting
some some great experience out there. So that'll pick up
as the season goes along.
Speaker 1 (14:46):
Coaching. Anything you'd like to add, no.
Speaker 2 (14:49):
Sir, again, appreciate what y'all do for us. Man last night.
It's always a great, great atmosphere, a great time at
the coaches show, and then you know, giving us your
opportunity to be on on the air. I tell you
all the time, it's not like this other places in
the state. So know that what you got to do,
it means a lot does as coaches, but it also
(15:09):
means a lot to our community and our people here.
Speaker 1 (15:12):
All right, Well, we glad to do it, and I
appreciate you saying that. I appreciate you always coming on, coach.
We'd like to have a good time, but excuse me,
most important, we'd like to promote BullGuard, hornet football athletics
and players, and we appreciate you doing that for us,
So thanks for your kind words.
Speaker 3 (15:26):
Good luck tonight or tomorrow night.
Speaker 2 (15:27):
Okay, yes, sir, appreciate it.
Speaker 3 (15:29):
All right, you got it.
