Speaker 1 (00:00):
And Friday, and I'm on Thursday because it's Thursday. Thank you.
Leave Friday and Saturday at Louisville's Churchhill Downs and we're
going back to the Hamilton's hotline with more Kentucky Derby coverage.
I got one of my favorite people in the industry,
Doug O'Neill, who is live from California. Good morning, Doug,
good mark.
Speaker 2 (00:20):
How you doing, brother man?
Speaker 1 (00:21):
I am doing. Christian Lea's in here too. We got
the gamut of East Alabama in here for you, just
for you do roll roll.
Speaker 2 (00:32):
Thanks so much for having me. Uh and every time
that that's the time a year rolls around. I can't
wait to talk to you guys selfishly from the horse.
Speaker 1 (00:43):
It is a great time of year and I'm looking
forward to uh to this this this one as well. Heck, Doug,
I saw one of your horses win in Dubai. What
a great week trip that was, man, that's awesome.
Speaker 2 (00:55):
Pretty incredible. So you know, when you get lucky enough
to have a horse that gets a bit into a
great place like you buy and uh, you know, they
they revere their their horses like we do, and they
just do the wonderful trip and wonderful horse.
Speaker 1 (01:09):
Well, I watched it on TV. Let me back up,
and I had no idea. When I taxed you the
day before you were there, I felt like he's eating
all the time. Was the trip harder on you or
the horse?
Speaker 2 (01:23):
No? You know, you've got the air admirates not to
do a commercial for them, but it's unbelievable to flight,
and they got to lay down seats, they got a
lounge in the back. Really, you get to where you
don't want the darn thing to land, you want to
and then they got their cocktails flowing, the pretty staffs,
(01:43):
you know. Serving it's pretty incredible trips. So they make
it really easy.
Speaker 1 (01:48):
Where does the horse fly? How does the horse go
on to cargo?
Speaker 2 (01:52):
They have a gut it out seven seven and it's
just incredible. I mean they fly yeah, top notch to
so tech sudden no, but no, actually, Sheikh Muhammad, the
ruler of Dubai, has got his own their own Yeah.
So it's pretty darn exceptional. And and because of it,
(02:14):
horses once they get there there they look exactly the
same as they did, but they were as to wherever
they came from. So they keep them really well hydrated
and they treat them like royalty.
Speaker 1 (02:25):
That's unbelievable. Doug O'Neill join us, one of the Doug
O'Neil Racing, one of the best trainers in the business.
He's in his home state of California. He's on the
mark this morning, the Derby and the Oaks next week.
You got a couple of horses in the undercard. But bore,
what a weekend it is. Like you said, great, great
weekend for the horse racing industry, Thoroughbred it really is.
Speaker 2 (02:44):
Yeah, and California's got another big chance this here with
journalism for Michael McCarthy. And yeah, he's set a wonderful horse.
And I've got actually trained the mayor, so it tells
you hold I'm getting, but the mayor of journalism. So
I definitely that's well, I'm kind of rooting for. And
(03:06):
but like every Derby, it's going to be wide open
and just need a lot of luck.
Speaker 1 (03:11):
Yeah, we were having we had Donner Brothers on earlier
and she was talking about that and and you know
I watched that race, Doug in that uh in the
race at sant Anita and the race he won journalism
and you know he got in some trouble with five horses,
and she was saying, there's gonna be nineteen others. Is
he gonna get Is he gonna have more trouble? She
was just giving us some you know, some you know,
lay of the land, things to think about, things to
(03:31):
think about. What's your thoughts on that, Doug.
Speaker 2 (03:34):
Oh, you're right. I mean he does have a style
that makes them vulnerable to such trouble. But to see
him recover like he did, they send a derby and
and win was exceptional to me. So it shows he's
mentally super tough and resilient and he wants it. So
(03:56):
he's the best I've seen so fun.
Speaker 1 (03:58):
Yeah, I was telling him, I was like, it's hard.
Hot helped me this as a guy that watched horse
Racing's not there a five horse field and like a
twelve you know, even an eight to twelve fifteen horse field.
But sometimes the shorter field seems harder than the big
I don't know, but give me your thoughts on that size.
Then on the field size.
Speaker 2 (04:17):
Well, you're right. When the smaller of the fields, he
was obviously he had a target on his back. He
was the one to beat. See you get those other
four riders maybe not necessarily righting their own horse or
riding him trying to keep him tended, or our horse white.
So yeah, I think he was the victim of the
small field. The other riders really knew where he was
(04:39):
at all times, so we're trying to make it real
easy on him, and he was good enough to get
it done.
Speaker 1 (04:44):
Regardless of you go. We're talking with Doug Odal, Doug
O'Neill racing live on the Hampson's Hotline, the Derby and
the Oaks coming up. Tell me about the Derby, Doug.
I know we talked about journalism. Who you like just
besides journal let's take journalism out. That's your home track.
Bob Baffer's got a couple of them too, rung in there.
Speaker 2 (04:58):
I know he's got Mike Smith on the one that
won in New York. Yep. And I'm blanking on a name,
but I'm a big fan of Mike Smith, so I
had on him and and uh yeah, there's uh. I
don't have the entries on me.
Speaker 1 (05:14):
But I got him right here. I'm gonna pull them
up for you. Go ahead.
Speaker 2 (05:19):
It's uh, I mean it. Pletcher's always uh uh, you know,
gonna have a solid water or two in there, and
it's it's just a wide open brace. I can always is.
And uh again, I do think the favor right now
and all the future betting his journalism, and and uh,
I'm gonna be captain obvious and stick with him.
Speaker 1 (05:39):
There you go. Yes, he was saying, Donald was talking
about that, and we were pulling up those horses we've got,
so of course journalism, Mike McCarthy, you said, Sam Man,
Mark Cassie, that's another one. Of course, Ian Will says
Barnham Square Rodriguez is Bafford's horse. That's that is that
the one is the mate. Yeah, that's what I thought
you were talking about. You like him though, I think.
Speaker 2 (05:59):
That's the fun Yeah, I do. I think that's the
one that won in New York with Mike Smith and
I just big money might I'll say, it's funny when
the persons are big and the race are big oof
and not many better riders fight.
Speaker 1 (06:15):
And you're right, he's the jockey. That was it, you know.
Speaker 2 (06:20):
I'm I'm glad Bob kept him on. I know he
wanted to ride him in New York he won, and
didn't know what he would do for the Derby, but
he was keeping him on. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (06:28):
I love that we were scheduled to get model. We
weren't able to getting sovereignty with Dolphin. What do you
think about that? He's pretty good horse too, and he
probably second flavor.
Speaker 2 (06:37):
Great connections, great connections, and you know, the horses being
prepared perfectly, so again just goes into you know, once
we get the draw with the close positions and everything,
it definitely becomes there's a lot of strategies involved, and
but you know, when you got those top connections, you
know they can they live with just about any posts.
(06:59):
So it's going to be what they said, the greatest
two minutes of sports. I can't wait.
Speaker 1 (07:04):
I know, let's say you have a horse running. I
know there's all kinds of styles of horses. There's those
that break the speed, the closers, you know, things like that.
What is there a perfect post in your world? In
that twenty horse field, just without looking at every horse,
is there a perfect gait?
Speaker 2 (07:19):
I think the second half of the field is the
best place to be. Yeah, sometimes you get down in
that one, two, three, four five type of thing, and
if you don't break super sharp, you're so vulnerable that
everyone's coming down everything. I'm sure you push down on it.
So I'd rather be the outside in an ideal world.
Speaker 1 (07:43):
That's that's and they even have the extension gate what
added on so all twenty that's unique too. How they
have that with the twenty you know.
Speaker 2 (07:50):
They actually I think I think they just changed that
de mark last year. I think now it's one continuous.
Speaker 1 (07:57):
Game, right, thank you my bad.
Speaker 2 (08:02):
Yes, Churchill just keeps every year they keep adding new
innovative things, and that's just Yeah, that's pretty remarkable what
they did there. And yeah, it's going to be hopefully
the weather mother nature, it's solid and it's it's going
to be a great day.
Speaker 1 (08:21):
Yeah, I do too, hope is Now tell me about
your horses in the undercard? How many you got a couple?
Speaker 2 (08:25):
I've got a few. The one posts we're excited about
a horse named Katona is spost run an oak staying
in the Kalisheva sixteen dirt race, and he's just he's
a cool horse. He actually ironically he ran into Dubai
World Cup and that's how well he came out of it.
He's kicking the barn down. He's already breathed that saying
(08:47):
he's going to breeze again this weekend and as long
as everything goes well and he checks all the marks
of being perfect, we're pointing him to the Alishiba.
Speaker 1 (08:57):
Good deal, good deal. Well, I hope go ahead.
Speaker 2 (09:02):
We're excited and uh for rumors that you might be
there too.
Speaker 1 (09:06):
Oh yeah, oh yeah, yeah, let's go. You got to
get there, Doug. There's no doubt. If I'm gonna be there,
you got to get there. You think the interview, uh
Mark on the Top Dog.
Speaker 2 (09:18):
With Dog, You kidding me? They're gonna be You could
be slotting off producers left and right.
Speaker 1 (09:27):
As long as I'm hanging on you, they get you
every week on TV, Doug, I spot you every week.
I give him a shout out with her ship, I
shout out to you.
Speaker 2 (09:35):
Know that now all the time, we're having fun and
we're blessed to be alongside you.
Speaker 1 (09:46):
Right, you're right. Look, thank you so much for your time,
my friend. I appreciate you, I love you, Thank you much,
and I look forward to see you next week.
Speaker 2 (09:52):
You got a brother take here you guys, you too.
Speaker 1 (09:55):
Dog, Thank you, Doug O'Neil, Doug O'Neill Racing. He's one
of the best.
Speaker 2 (09:59):
He's
