Speaker 1 (01:24):
Ali Rout is the president of the OPLACKA Chamber of Commerce,
and she's on the Hamilton's Hotline Live. Good morning, miss.
Speaker 5 (01:29):
Alli, Good morning. How are you all today?
Speaker 2 (01:33):
We're good?
Speaker 1 (01:34):
We're good. How's everything with you in the family?
Speaker 5 (01:38):
Great bendy morning this morning. Of course, all my fun
liberty duty. But we are hosting the Civics B this morning,
and so if you have not seen the news, the
National Civics B is a new program that's brought to
you by the US Chamber of Commerce, and it's really
(01:59):
all about trying to instill vivic pride and knowledge in
our younger people. There was a study done that said,
I think over ninety percent of teenagers would rather give
up their right to vote than their cell phone for
a year. So ooh, doesn't that hurt? That hurts bad?
(02:22):
That hurts bad. And so the OPA like a chamber
came on as one of I think three regions in
the state of Alabama and we're hosting a regional competition.
And so what that means is that we have been
collecting essays from sixth, seventh, and eighth graders over the
last few months. Those got graded blindly and everything. And
(02:42):
then the top twenty students, half of whom are coming
from Opelaika Middle School, are competing in person today at
the Oplaka Chamber and so we have two rounds of
questions where they'll answer civics based questions and these are
hard mark you might I mean, I don't know if
I would pass it. I'm so excited to watch this
(03:04):
this morning. I'm em seeing it. So they'll do two
rounds of question and the answers and then or multiple
truth questions, and then the top five will then transition
and those top five will kind of present their essay
that they submitted. They will present that to the judges
and then the judges will answer or ask them questions
(03:27):
regarding their essay. And so we're super grateful to have
Eddie Smith as our presenting sponsor of this today along
with Matchiemtchesney, Congressman My Rodgers, and Sheriff J. Jones have
all got to come on board and sponsored this in
its inaugural year, which is we're so grateful for it
because a lot of times that takes a lot of
(03:47):
belief and for us that this is going to be
great even though you haven't seen it before. And then
we've got some great judges. We've got former Mayor Barbara Patten,
counselman Todd Rowk, Vanessa Benitez from our twenty hundred forty class,
and Marcus Milner, and then Nick Vamsock, who is an
architect in town who they all also really believe in
(04:10):
civics and we're happy to volunteer their time today.
Speaker 1 (04:15):
Well, that's good, that is interesting. How many do you
know how many is participating? Did you say, well, we.
Speaker 5 (04:23):
Only have we we select the top twenty to participate.
I can't recall how many essays were submitted, but it
was a lot, because I will say we were really
grateful for our partnership with the Okalaca City Schools because
they actually required their students to write the essay and
(04:43):
so they got submitted that way. And we were super
grateful that we have such high participation from Opelika. But
you know, in future years we will likely be hosting
a larger region so we might we've got some people.
I think somebody's coming in from Ufaula or perhaps, and
so it's definitely a regional competition. But I think at
(05:05):
least ten of our twenty participants are from Opelaca Middle School.
Speaker 1 (05:09):
M interesting, that's good, that's good.
Speaker 2 (05:11):
They'd all born in.
Speaker 5 (05:12):
A way makes us proud. Yeah, I mean some of them.
You know, their essay had to be about some civic
issue that they wanted to solve, and then it needed
to talk about the foundation, the founding principles of civics
and how those came into play to the issue that
they were solving. And you know the best part about
(05:34):
this is that there's a cash price for the first, second,
and third place today. So the winner will receive five
hundred dollars, the second place winner will receive two hudred
and fifty and a third place winner and we will
receive one hundred and twenty five dollars. And those three
participants will then go on to compete at the state competition,
which will be held at Huntingdon College later this summer,
(05:54):
and then if by chance, one of the OPLAKA Chamber
of participants wins at the state level, then they get
to go compete at nationals, and when they compete at nationals,
that'll be in DC, and we are actually one of
our sponsorship elements is to pay for the teacher to
get to accompany them.
Speaker 1 (06:13):
Sounds like it's a big deal.
Speaker 5 (06:15):
It's a pretty big deal. We're pretty proud of it
and excited to host it, and it's our first one,
but we are. You know, for me, I care a
lot about civics and I think that that's statistic about
people giving up their phones or giving up their right
to vote just to keep a phone. Is I get it.
I get why kids would say that, but they also
(06:37):
just don't necessarily have an appreciation or understanding as much.
And something's got to switch to get that drive and
appreciation for our freedom and our values and our liberties,
but also our responsibility as American citizens as well.
Speaker 1 (06:55):
And it's interesting, and I'm with you, I can see that,
but it doesn't there's something going to get refocused on that.
I don't know how do you do that? But that
is interesting.
Speaker 5 (07:04):
Well, we're trying. And you know, the winner of the
National Physics b has more than fifty thousand dollars in
scholarship money out programs that's good. We still talk about
why you want to do this. Yeah, scholarship money.
Speaker 3 (07:17):
Where is that?
Speaker 1 (07:18):
Yeah, that's huge. Start going to school. Everybody knows the
ex If you haven't, you'll know right quick how much
it costs.
Speaker 5 (07:24):
Exactly to send somebody not this much in the bank
and like prepared for in sixth, seventh or eighth grade.
That's incredible.
Speaker 1 (07:33):
Yeah, you are right about that. All right, good deal.
We'll be waiting to see who the results from that.
Speaker 5 (07:37):
All right, what else we got, Well, you know, we've
got a slow week this Sue week. We have a
ribbon cutting scheduled for Friday, I'm sorry, Thursday, Thursday, May first.
I can't believe it's already name, but we have that
scheduled for ten weeks eleven thirty am on Thursday, and
(08:00):
that is going to be held at the Opalaika Chamber,
which is of course at two hundred soelth sixth Street.
And the business that we're celebrating is Monster Sandwiches. It
is a food truck in the area and I'm really
excited to see exactly what kind of Monster sandwiches they
have up for grants on Thursday and then let's see
I think as we look ahead. The community calendar for
(08:24):
this this weekend is quite crazy. We don't have any
additional items on the calendar outside of that raven cutting
distak but keep opal like a beautiful house garden in
the park on Saturday from like eight am until I
think two pm.
Speaker 3 (08:42):
And then.
Speaker 5 (08:44):
The Kentucky Derby Day out at Growing Barn which is
on Saturday as well. I'm sure there's a lot of
other festivities and activities happening. And the next Tuesday is
our our golf tournament, which it's very exciting.
Speaker 1 (09:01):
Y'all have a huge was talking with Joe McNally the
other day about that and we were talking, yeah, and
Joe says he, y'all have a huge deal. He looks
forward to that every year.
Speaker 5 (09:09):
It's a huge crowd. It's the most fun. Joe takes
such good care of us. We love spending the day
out at Robert tren Jones.
Speaker 1 (09:18):
It is a beautiful and he does a good job.
He's awesome. He is so anything else. Miss Ali.
Speaker 5 (09:23):
Yeah, and you know you're always grateful for Glenn Smith
Future also our title sponsor of the golf tournament.
Speaker 1 (09:29):
Yeah, and the sponsure of this segment right here each
and every Monday. We appreciate that chamber chat. Okay, Ali,
I hope you have a good week girl, and everybody

Speaker 2 (09:46):

Speaker 1 (09:47):

the mark.
