Speaker 1 (00:00):
Best.
Speaker 2 (00:00):
Davie Hills play Friday night in football, and that game
will be right here at the Duck. And you know
who their athletic director is. And she is a good
friend of me, yours and the show, Miss Myra Miles,
and she is live on the Hamilton's hotline from Vess Davie.
Speaker 1 (00:16):
Good morning, Miss Myra.
Speaker 3 (00:18):
Good morning d Mark. How we doing, girl doing great?
Doing great?
Speaker 2 (00:23):
Good good?
Speaker 1 (00:24):
Miss Myer's an early riser or two. I like you
ready to come to Auburn?
Speaker 3 (00:31):
Coach I am. We had that way tomorrow tomorrow afternoon.
Speaker 1 (00:36):
Coach Ether's and I'm Jeff. We were talking about her
last night. Whatn't we did this were?
Speaker 2 (00:40):
Yeah, so he said he was looking forward to seeing you.
He's a good one, isn't he.
Speaker 1 (00:44):
Miss Myra?
Speaker 3 (00:46):
He is. You know the thing about Coach Ether just
he's just been successful everywhere he's been. I mean, yeah,
let's talk about he's a great acting old guy. But
you know he's a good man. So you put those
two things together and you're going to have success regardless
of the outcome on boards.
Speaker 2 (01:05):
Yeah, you're right, he is an incredible man. I was
sitting here thinking about your career, Miss Myra. I know
was it O seven that you took over at Hoover.
Maybe is ad O right in there?
Speaker 1 (01:15):
Six? Maybe? What was it?
Speaker 3 (01:17):
Maybe eight? Don't eight?
Speaker 1 (01:20):
Yeah, you had it then, you gosh, you were during
their time there.
Speaker 2 (01:24):
I think they were like twenty state titles in ten
different sports. You've worked at Yeah, yeah, you worked there.
You worked at Tennessee with Jeremy Pruitt, You're now at Vestavia.
You've had a long career. How many years have you
been involved in educations for?
Speaker 1 (01:38):
And how long?
Speaker 3 (01:39):
Well, actually, this would be my thirty third total. You know,
when I retired at Hoover, I had twenty just a
little bit over twenty nine, and I had enough sick
days to get my thirty and that's when I went
into working with Anderson family in the corporate world and
then went to Tennessee. And so this technically is my
thirty fourth year and education. So I'm still enjoying it.
(02:03):
Don't know how much longer I'm gonna do it, But
I don't think I tell you is I still love
what I do, and as long as that is the case,
I'm going to keep doing it.
Speaker 2 (02:11):
You know what, Please do and let me back up.
Pardon me for not asking How are you doing as
your recovery?
Speaker 1 (02:17):
Did it went? Did it go well? For shame on me?
Speaker 3 (02:20):
Yeah? Had hip replacement on May third, saw doctor amblem
last week. He says, I'm doing great. Of course I'd
like to be doing better, you know, but it's when
you have hip total hip replacement. It's a year process actually,
so but I feel great. I'm getting around good, going
up steps now. So it's all awesome.
Speaker 1 (02:40):
The good deal, good deal. I'm glad you'll be doing
a lot better. That's good. Mara Miles with us. She's
the athletic director at Best Davie Hills.
Speaker 2 (02:46):
Live on the Hamlet's outline thirty four years involved in
athletics and education and education based athletics.
Speaker 1 (02:54):
Athletic director now Best Davy Hills.
Speaker 2 (02:56):
Tough game last week in the Bowl, Miss Myra played
a good Harvard team.
Speaker 1 (03:00):
You all turned it over a lot, didn't you.
Speaker 3 (03:03):
Yeah, we did. And you know, here's the thing about it,
And pats off the carver and the guy that's coaching
his because didn't he I think he came from Mississippi,
is that right?
Speaker 1 (03:17):
Well he did. He was a long time coach at
Edgewood MS.
Speaker 2 (03:20):
Marra won a bunch of aissay titles, went went over
there and then came back here. You know, he's got
Robert Johnson on that staff, he's got several good former
head coaches on that staff.
Speaker 3 (03:32):
Well, he's he's done a terrific job. Now he he
had some horses, there's no doubt about it, you know.
But here's the thing that I tell everybody. You know,
we knew exactly what we were getting into when we
scheduled these two tough games right away. You know, in
our region is brutal. But you know, I just I'm
(03:54):
of the belief that if you want to be the batch,
you got to play the best and you have to
do you have to do that, and our staff understands that.
Now we've got a lot of inexperience and d mark.
You know me, I am non excuse maker, and you know,
we got to hold onto the ball. We got to
you know, make our assignments and do what we got
(04:15):
to do. But you know, I hope we're a little
better this week, and I think we will be because,
in my opinion, I've got one of the best coaching
staffs in the state from top to bottom, with Robert
Evans as our head coach.
Speaker 1 (04:28):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (04:28):
You know what, I'd never argue with that you are
an extremely good administrative coach. And I do agree with
your staff that's it's a phenomenal group. And look, I.
Speaker 1 (04:36):
Was going to talk to you about that.
Speaker 2 (04:37):
You do play and arguably one of the best you
know regions, and here you are playing Auburn in the
duck next year at home and in here you are,
you know, last week open it up in the kickoff
class against against one of the better Montgomery teams.
Speaker 1 (04:50):
So yeah, you're you're you're extremely smart to do that.
Speaker 2 (04:54):
He is too to You know, you can, you can
if you're not worried about Wi's and Nils. And I
heard coach Martin Free, one of your good friends, our
good friends, say, you know, I'm not chasing wis, We're
chasing results.
Speaker 1 (05:03):
And I thought that was such a good statement.
Speaker 2 (05:05):
You know.
Speaker 1 (05:06):
Yeah, at the end of the YA, I want to
have a little talk with you just second.
Speaker 2 (05:09):
I want to ask a few questions about the state
of the HSAA.
Speaker 1 (05:12):
What you're thinking right now, Ms Meyer.
Speaker 2 (05:14):
I know that we've got we've lost a lot of
basketball players.
Speaker 1 (05:17):
One is and too much. One's one is too many.
We've lost a few of.
Speaker 2 (05:20):
Our better athletes to our rival states for NIL.
Speaker 1 (05:25):
I don't know, Yeah, what's your thoughts on on that?
Speaker 3 (05:29):
Well, you know, I really I probably have a different opinion.
I am a real outside of us thinker allways, have
been a progressive thinker. But at the same time, I
think we've got to be very careful. I do think
that as a state association, we got to read, you know,
we have got to do something progressively. We cannot just
(05:51):
react to what's going on around us, because if we
don't do something, we're going to continue to lose players.
I don't want it to get crazy with it. But
at the same time, I think that we need to
try to look at what we're doing across the country.
And I'm not saying we've got to get there neck
(06:12):
and neck with them, but we've got to make some
strides to do something about the NIL because the football,
the football, basketball, all of the sport arenas d mart
that we know that used to be there, even as
you know, eight or ten years ago, it's gone. So
if you want to steal, have your state be top
(06:33):
of the line, and you've got to be progressive and
watch the trends and let's do what we have to
do to give our coaches, our kids, our state the
opportunity to continue to keep our kids. Now, Like I said,
I'm not all about going crazy with this thing, you know,
but I just think we've got to make some adjustments.
Speaker 2 (06:54):
You know what I think about this. We were the
leader with the NFHS network. We were the leader with
after as I say, after further of you, with instant replay,
we have been We put the microphones on the officials
on the.
Speaker 1 (07:09):
Field a flag football.
Speaker 2 (07:11):
We were the leader. Think about all. Then you see
what I'm saying. We didn't get out and jump. We
didn't get out in front of this.
Speaker 1 (07:19):
Yeah, and we wasn't the leader, Miss Myra late. Oh
it's not I agree with you.
Speaker 3 (07:23):
It's not too late, you know. And I think that
we're in a situation where, you know, I got to
talk with mister Harmon a little bit on Friday night.
That's actually the first time that I've actually had a
conversation with him. Uh. But you know, I think he
as a director has an opportunity to step out and
(07:43):
do something to kind of start developing some things that
you know, could create a really positive legacy for him.
Speaker 1 (07:53):
You know, I agree I agree.
Speaker 3 (07:54):
I think there's not a better person in that office
than Kim Vickers.
Speaker 1 (07:58):
I agree with that she is.
Speaker 3 (08:01):
Uh, she is a top notch number one lady, an individual.
She's going to do the right things. So he's fortunate
to have that person on.
Speaker 2 (08:12):
His side in the whole.
Speaker 3 (08:12):
There's several others in there.
Speaker 1 (08:13):
Too, but no, she's she's a glue.
Speaker 3 (08:15):
I think it's she is. She's the glue, especially right now.
But the nil thing. It's going to be interesting and
I do hope that the association will reach out to
different administrators across the state, uh, different you know, coaches,
and and also talk to kids and see what they're thinking.
(08:36):
And I'm not telling about these heads that all they
want to do is all they see is money. You know.
I wanted to talk to kids that see the reality
of what it's doing to the state of the game.
But I don't want to lose any more kids because
we are losing them.
Speaker 1 (08:51):
Yeah we are, you know, And go ahead.
Speaker 3 (08:54):
I mean, I mean, and can you blame a family?
Speaker 2 (08:57):
I cannot know if you got to if you if
you have a.
Speaker 3 (08:59):
Family struggling and then they're offered a next amount of dollars,
kid can do whatever freck. You know, times are tough
right now. Yes, that is going to be the pull.
Speaker 1 (09:09):
So and they're offering the money up front.
Speaker 3 (09:13):
Yeah, you know, like I said, I am hopeful. I
really am hopeful that we're going to get this thing right.
And I do feel like that there is an immense
understanding that we do have to make some adjustment. Yeah,
I do still have a I do have enough old
school in me, do Mark. But at the same time
(09:34):
I also have common sense.
Speaker 2 (09:35):
Yes, you do know we gotta do something, agree Mara Miles,
athletic director at Best Stave Hills. You know what I
do agree, not that it mattered Jeff and I are
secondary his It's kind of like when we have coach
Taurville sentator Toeville on he talked about nil and he
was trying to get it to the house in the
Senate and they really didn't want to get involved because
they already let as everybody says, they'd already let the
toothpaste out. So well, look, we got a chance to
(09:56):
get it right. And I wonder if they I'm sitting
here thinking, yeah, we had a long time friends. I'm
biased towards you, but you've been an administrator in high
school in college. I think you'd be a good one
to be, you know, kind of you know, I don't know.
With coach Harmon, I think you'd be a good one
to get on that. Miss Myra, I don't know what
you could do, but with him, I hope you have to.
You get what I'm saying because you've seen both sides,
(10:17):
and I'm gonna say you said something in there. If
we listen to those kids more, we can find out
a bunch more Judge, more Corkadelle Games, more Corcordale and
down in Jackson. Talked about they've got some good players
down in Jackson and talked about all the money that's
being thrown at these kids in n I l. He said,
it's mind boggling, and he and I got him in
touch with Miss Vickers Kim to talk to him about,
(10:39):
you know, the the dues and the dunts. It's scary
out there when you start hearing.
Speaker 1 (10:43):
What these and it's going.
Speaker 2 (10:45):
It's college is going through these high schools, some of
these nil deals. I don't know about high schools, but that's
where they're going. Ms maher As, you.
Speaker 3 (10:51):
Know, yeah, you know well, And I tell you I
would challenge you to and I've told I've told Miss Vickers.
You know, I would like for them to talk to
my really good buddy, Jim caval. He is in a
collegiate world. He and I have been friends forever. He
is he used to own all these Iron Tribe group
of gyms and now he's sold. Right now, he's over
(11:13):
athletes dot Or guiding her to google Jim Caval and
you ought to get him on your show. He has
a whole different perspective on things, and he is saying
at the collegiate level is give the athlete the voice. Now, look,
I'm not trying to turn high school athletics into collegiate athletics.
But what I'm saying is there's got to be some
nuggets that we can learn from the collegiate level on
(11:33):
what's going on. It's not going to be that big,
I mean, I get that, but let's make sure we're
doing our research and try to make this thing as
good as we can. And to what you said about earlier,
I'd love to be a part of some discussions, but
you know, I'm also going to be somebody that would
absorb it and take it in and then when I
ask my opinion. I will give my opinion, but not
(11:56):
until then.
Speaker 1 (11:56):
Actually, yeah, that's why I know. That's the reason I
know how you are.
Speaker 2 (11:59):
But I do because I know you don't mind speaking
your opinion. I know you've been there and done that,
and I know you you're still in it for the kids.
And I think that's where a lot of them forget
if you listen to those what they're saying. I mean,
I don't blame those basketball players, but I watch those
young men playing Burmia, and we don't need those kids
leaving Alabama.
Speaker 1 (12:17):
I mean.
Speaker 3 (12:18):
And the next thing, because the thing about when we're
losing kids, that means we're losing uh uh, we're losing
college coaches that into our high schools and giving us
a look, it's not just about those kids. Just we're
having opportunities to put our school on a stage, right,
you know, so you don't want to Those are just things.
(12:42):
And then the kid at Thompson, the quarterback.
Speaker 1 (12:44):
That turned down that million dollars Seaborn, I.
Speaker 3 (12:48):
Mean that speaks volumes. Yes it does, that kid and
his family and and for the program at Thompson, But
it's just.
Speaker 1 (12:55):
The scariness ma scary. Oh yeah, it is you know,
I think he could have that good a quarterback. All
of a sudden boo. You know, man, you train it
and you go.
Speaker 2 (13:05):
Great conversation. I really appreciate you being candid. It's always
good to talk to you. I look forward to seeing you.
I'll be able to second half tomorrow night. All right,
so okay, all right, look forward to see your trace.
Speaker 3 (13:16):
Say I'll be standing around. I'll be standing on the sidelines.
Come down down and stay.
Speaker 1 (13:20):
I will. I will love you.
Speaker 2 (13:22):
Girls, say travels, thank you, love you all right, you
got it.
Speaker 1 (13:25):
Bye bye.
Speaker 2 (13:26):
