On Today's EpisodeHow to Remove Moss from Your Roof [00:00 - 15:32]FORMULA I USED:
  • 1 Pound Oxygenated Bleach
  • 2 Gallons of Water

THIS IS FOR DIY Formulas! If you purchased a roof cleaner, follow label instructionsFIRST: RINSE PLANTS AROUND BASE OF HOUSESECOND: RINSE THE ROOF WITH LOW PRESSURE
  • IF You spray from the ground, be cautious NOT to spray up under the shingles.
  • May be better to get on the roof and spray at a downward angle
  • Be careful–it’s slippery
  • ALSO: Be careful with a hose on the roof
  • Don’t damage your shingles
  • This alone may be reason to call someone else to do it….

THIRD: IF DEALING WITH HEAVY MOSS, SWEEP LIGHTLY
  • Use a soft-bristled brush
  • Scrub lightly from top down
  • Don’t damage shingles
  • Remove what you can of the moss before spraying on your cleaner
  • Most of my moss wouldn’t come off at that point

FOURTH: APPLY YOUR CLEANING SOLUTION WITH A GARDEN SPRAYER
  • Allow to stay for 15 - 20 minutes
  • Rinse thoroughly
  • AGAIN: LOW PRESSURE
  • And spraying from the top down
  • IF POSSIBLE don't do this from the ground
  • Don’t push water up under the shingles.

FIFTH: A SECOND QUICK SWEEP
  • After rinsing . . . Swept it again
  • This time a lot of moss came off–filled up the gutters
  • Lichen began to powder away over the following week
  • It MAY take more than one treatment to kill all of the MOSS.
  • If you have to reapply
  • Do so only after it's been allowed to thoroughly dry.

SIXTH: GIVE THAT LANDSCAPING ANOTHER RINSE!Just to be safe, it doesn't hurt to spray your landscaping down one more time after you've finished on the roof. A FEW THINGS TO REMEMBER:
  • Don't use a pressure washer!
  • Don't allow the bleach to remain on the surface for more than 30 minutes without rinsing.
  • Take precautions with bleach -- goggles, etc.
  • RINSE WELL – oxygenated bleach will leave a white residue if not rinsed well
  • Protect the landscaping, decking, etc. below and around the house
  • Pre-rinse plants and decking and rinse off immediately after.
  • Use plastic to cover plants
  • For some folks, this is a Hire it Out Project!
  • If that’s you, make the call!
  • Don’t get on your roof if you’re not comfortable with it!
  • There are plenty of places out there waiting to help!

PREVENTATIVE MEASURESThe moss and lichen will come back as time goes by. Here are some easy preventative steps to help slow that down:
  • Trim back tree branches!
  • Sunlight is your friend!
  • Remove debris that accumulates on the roof regularly with a leaf blower.
  • Always work DOWN the slope!
  • Don't blow debris or spray water up under the shingles.
  • Keep gutters clean to promote water drainage.
  • Figure on regular maintenance

Maybe It's Time to Update the Camper [15:33 - 39:03]We don't usually think about throwing a new coat of paint in our campers or RVs . . . but maybe we should....

(00:00):
Well, good morning everybody. HappySaturday, Haley, Happy last Saturday for
a while. That sounds so sad, it does. Yeah, happy Saturday,
Dan, it is sad. Thisis it Haley's last one for a
few months at least. Yeah, goodness, whoever allowed you, excuse me

(00:22):
to be gone this long? Whatthe heck? I did not consult the
powers to be No. I rememberthe day that Hailey walked in and said
she was pregnant, and I wascompletely confused how that could happen. Nothing
had been run by me, asyou know, to get a planned for
this. Yeah, but anyway, this is what's going on last Saturday.

(00:43):
Are you excited now? Don't don'ttell me, because we are going to
get to that. We're going toget to that. We've got other things
to accomplish now, and we're goingto do our best because you're listening to
the Rep Collite Home improvement show sponsoredby Benjamin Moore, and that right there
is proof of how well our brainsare working today. We're not clicking.
We don't know what's going on.I've got pregnancy brain, and Dan,

(01:07):
I think it just thinks it's contagious. Yeah, I have sympathy pains.
For you. I'm very empathetic.Yeah, and we have noticed that if
you get a headache, it's notlong before I've got a headache or a
backache or whatever. Yep, wedid the pro show and you're complaining just
as much as me about your feethurt and your hips. Yes, it's
it's how I roll. And Ithink that your pregnancy. You know,

(01:30):
I've done as much as I canto take that on myself and at least
gained the weight. I have notgained the weight. I'm very pleased about
that. But as dumb as you'vegotten over time, and you would admit
that, I would admit that.Yeah, you walked scary. You walked
in a couple of weeks ago andsaid, well, I'm about as dumb
as I've ever been. Right,it's pregnancy brain, it is. Well,

(01:51):
I've got it too. So anyway, we're doing our best. Haley
got here today and said, Idon't even know if I'm hardly awake.
Yeah, you struggled all morning, sucking down Calle, trying my best.
Yeah. So anyway, Rep CollateHome Improvement Show. Yeah, hopefully you're
still listening. We've got a lotof really good stuff that we're going to
cover as much as our brains are, right. I mean, the topics

(02:12):
that we are going to discuss havea lot of potential. Yes, So
at the end of the show,we'll kind of touch base with Haley and
kind of give you a good sendoff. Before that, we'll be talking
about redoing r vs. This iskind of your your topic. Yeah,
your last hurrah for a while.Camper makeover. I wish that I had
a camper. If someone would liketo donate a camper to me, I

(02:34):
will redo it. I would loveto do this project. You're going to
keep it at that point or giveit back to the people. We'll talk
about it after, Okay, allright, so we'll get about your contact
info later so people can do that. Right now, though, let's talk
about roofs and moss, algae, liking all of those things on roofs.
You know, if you've got mossup there, if you've got liking up

(02:57):
there, it's generally not a verygood thing. You want to make sure
you get that off, you know, And let's talk about why they're bad,
and then we'll get into some thingsthat you can do to get it
off. All kinds of stuff.Yeah, I've actually jumped into this project.
In fact, in fact, letme pause for a second and go
back a few weeks ago. Youweren't here, but I talked about how
I'm really struggling to get projects done. Yeah, and I gave out this

(03:22):
grand recommendations that we make lists andthen organize those lists start crossing things on.
I was going to compliment you todayactually, because the past two weeks
we have talked about now projects thatyou have tackled. Last week we talked
about cleaning the house. That's somethingthat you did, the siding of the
hoods, yes, And now we'regoing to talk about cleaning yeah, roof,

(03:43):
and this is something that you did, right. And when I talked
about making that list, I feltreally dumb after that show that episode aired,
because I thought telling people to makea list is about as dumb as
it gets. I mean, it'sso obvious. I shouldn't have to say
it obvious, but it's so true, right, And it wasn't obvious for
me. I knew I should doit, but I hadn't done it right.
So now I actually went and did. I took my own advice,

(04:05):
and I feel so much better overthe last couple of weeks, I have
crossed items off. I even fixedYou don't know about this yet, but
my flower box is now back onthe side of the house. Told the
kids. The big funny story aboutthat is whatever last summer. At the
beginning of the summer, I wasgoing to stain all my flower boxes,
and then at the end of thesummer we checked in to see once how

(04:27):
we had done, and I hadnot stained them. In fact, the
only changed to my flower boxes isthat one fell off the house and was
laying there. Well, it's nolonger on the ground. It's on the
house again. Crossing items off leftand right. One of those items is
this roof. Yes, and Iknew I had moss on the roof because
three four years ago we talked aboutthis on the show. Betsy was here

(04:49):
and we talked about how to getit off the roof and why it's bad.
And I knew I had a littlebit at that point, but I
didn't want to get up there.I was a little nervous about the project
itself, and so I let itgo. I'm gonna tell you what happened
because I let it go. Anyway, moss is bad for the roof.
Right, it's wet. That constantmoisture on your roof isn't very good.
It grows steadily. That's another reasonit's bad. It can push up under

(05:12):
the shingles, it can lift themup, it can damage them in that
regard. It leads to all kindsof problems. The weight can be bad,
you know, because it absorbs moisture. Is pointing to be honest,
because I love the way that itlooks. I love moss. I love
liking all the different species. Ithink they're beautiful. I actually have a
tattoo of liking, which I thinkis absolutely insane. It is, that's

(05:34):
the case. But this is anotherone of those things that I'm learning as
a homeowner I have to hate now. Yeah, love critters and squirrels and
all of that, and as ahomeowner, got war with them. But
yeah, moss on the roof,it really can do. It detracts from
the look. I think maybe youlike the idea. Some people. It

(05:54):
does like a little cottage, youknow, tucked away. You don't want
it. It's bad. Lichen isalso bad. Now. Lichen is actually
two organisms. They basically function asa single unit. They're a fungus living
symbiotically, Is that the right wayto say that, Yeah, symbiotically with
an algae. So a fungus andan algae get together and there you go.

(06:16):
It's liking. They're tenacious. Theyreally grip onto the surfaces and they
refuse to let go, and theycan like really do some damage. Oh,
let me tell you about the damageliking. Yeah, so let me.
That's that's what we're talking about.Trying to get that stuff off the
roof. That's why it's bad now. I had it on my roof,
a little bit of it, andI thought, you know, i'll get

(06:36):
it. I'll get it. Ikept putting it off. It's not a
fun project when you think about gettingon the roof spraying a cleaner of something
port on it. Yeah, I'llleave it. It can't be that bad.
Well, I noticed this spring.Has it even been spring? I
guess it's technically spring spring. Inoticed on maybe one of the nice days
that we have that it was alittle worse this year. So I decided

(06:58):
I got to get up there andtry to get it off. So I
have done that, and we're goingto walk through what you need to do
and how you can do this.As well. But what I found is
that the damage these things had donein the two years did I let them
go. It's very stressful, it'spretty profound. So I was really really
surprised that it had done this muchdamage. But when I got up there,

(07:20):
I saw the lichen. Once Igot it killed and going off,
a lot of the roof granules hadgone with it, you know, from
the shingles and stuff like that. The moss had really spread worse than I
could tell from the ground. Iwas really really regretful that I had not
gotten on this all those years ago. So for all of you out there

(07:41):
who have the tendency to put somethingoff, at least dig into it.
You know, I had been talkingdirectly to me because I have moss on
my roof and a lot of staining. I don't know if there's lichen up
there, but it definitely like itclearly needs to be cleaned. Yeah.
I actually got Sheriff Goslin roof outthere to take a look and tell me

(08:01):
if the damage was something that Ihad to repair and replace. He went
through the guy who came out talkto me about how the granules are gone.
But what their main job is isto almost act like sunscreen or the
asphalt in the fiberglass layers underneath, you know, in the shingles, so
they actually protect it from the sunand things like that. And the fact
that you know, the moss andthe like and grow in the shady areas

(08:24):
of the house, these areas arestill somewhat protected. So he told me
I probably have a good five yearsor so yet that I'm good, not
the end of the world. Theleg and was taking these things off,
but he gave me a quote ongetting the roof redone. Okay, and
it's staggering and if the costs areonly going to go up, so this
is something to take care of.Don't delay. And there are a number

(08:46):
of ways to do it. Youcan do it yourself and you can hire
it done. And let's start withhire it done first because it's quick.
There are local places right that youcan call Grand Rapids Roof Shampoo I think
is one. I don't know themterribly well, but I know they'll get
out there and do that. Justcheck with a roofer. They're going to
have some recommendations for you and youcan get this taken care of it.
If getting on the roof is notgoing to be your thing, or taking

(09:07):
care of it yourself isn't going tobe your things. It's intimidating. I
mean, especially if you've got areally peaked roof, well right, and
I don't want people falling off leftand right now. We don't want that,
No, not even a little bit. I don't even want them falling
off just left or just right forsure, not both fall right. So
if you don't feel comfortable, don'tfeel safe, at least get somebody out

(09:28):
there to take a look at it. All right. That's my recommendation,
and I speak from the experience ofprocrastination. Now, there are other ways
that you can do it yourself, and that's what I did, and I
made my own little solution based oninternet formulas. I'll put links in the
show notes so you can check thoseout. You can buy cleaners, you
know, Wet and Forget is apopular one. Matt from Sheriff Goslin Roofing,

(09:50):
who came and looked at the roof, told me that he's got a
lot of his customers that have usedthat. It's something that you just basically
hook it up to your garden holesthat's got a special nozzle on the end,
so you can apparently spray it ontothe roof from the ground, which
is a little concerning to me becauseI've done things like that before, and
I've sprayed under the shingles, right, Like, aren't you supposed to not
spray up? You would want toangle it so that it's not blasting up

(10:15):
under the shingles, is all Ican say. Serious, Like arching it
to the point like it's raining ontoyour roof is what i'd think of.
But anyway, you spray it onand you just wet and forget, you
walk away, but it go Imean there's instructions. You got to follow
the instructions, but it will takeyou know, sometimes it said two to
three months over time it will goaway, But it will go away.
Yeah. Really, it's a marathon. It's not a sprint, all right,

(10:37):
So wet and forget, that's oneyou would forget after two of Right,
you can make your own formulas.Like I said, I'm not going
to go into all of them.I'm not going to give you tons of
that in folks, nobody's going toremember it. I'll put it in the
show notes. But the one thatI used, I used one pound oxygenated
bleach. Okay, So I justgot oxyclean and two gallons of water.
I went with that because the oxygenatedbleach that I bought was color safe,

(11:01):
and I figured that way, ifI get it all over myself, Oh
wow, you're not going to damageall my clothes because I know myself.
If I use regular bleach anyone,I mean, why, I don't know
how you'd avoid it. Well, right, it's not just a me problem,
it's an US problem. That's awee problem. Yeah. So I
used oxygenated bleach, mix it upinto two gallons of water, put it
in a little garden pump up sprayer, and got ready to put it on.

(11:22):
So I'll quickly walk you through thesteps. Basically, you would spray
like all the plants and stuff aroundthe house. Get that with not with
the bleach. Hailey's giving me ablank stare. Could not be right,
Nope, nope nope. Rinse thosewith clean water, all right, all
right, rense all of your landscapingwith clean water, not with the bleach.

(11:46):
Side. So then once you've gotthat rent, you rinse your roof.
Now I got on the roof.I was worried about dragging the hose
over the shingles and stuff like that. I was very careful and it worked
very well. I've got a ranch, so I don't have a lot of
pitch to worry about. Yeah, but it was surprisingly easy. It got
the hose up there. It wasvery safe, and I just wet the

(12:07):
roof going down, so I'm notblasting up under the shingles. Yes,
got everything wet, and then Iwent over it with a very soft bristle
broom. Again, you want tobe very careful. You're not trying to
take off granules or anything. I'mjust trying to see if I can get
some of the moss off. Yeah, just to really None of the moss
came off. Sometimes it might sometimesit won't. In my situation, it
didn't. None of the like andof course came off. So then I

(12:28):
sprayed everything with my bleach solution. Now is the time for the bleach solution.
Sprayed everything and then you let itsit for about twenty minutes. Okay,
Then you come back and give ita good rinse. Be very careful
about that. Make sure you're givingit a good rince. I did a
really good job, except in acouple of areas on the house I noticed
I didn't get those as well, because a white powder stayed behind afterwards,

(12:52):
it rinsed off in future rains.Yeah, so it's not zap big of
a deal, but it did leavea little bit of a white residue in
the places I didn't rinse really well. So anyway, I rinse it really
well, and then I came backwith that broom. You know, so
it's been twenty minutes that the solutionsat on there right now, You've rinsed
it with the hose. Came backwith a broom and all kinds of moss

(13:13):
was falling off at that point, plugging up my gutters. It was great.
I was so happy to see itgo. And then as the weeks
have gone by, that was abouttwo weeks ago that I did that,
and I've noticed the lic in isdying, it's powdering off when I get
up there. It's gonna take timefor it all to go away, and
I might need a second application, but definitely something. But you can tell.

(13:33):
I mean difference, huge difference.Very pleased, And like I said,
I got the roofer out there. He said, I caught it in
time. It didn't get really reallybad, and I just wanted to make
sure that we talk about it now. You've got to be safe. There's
all kinds of things that I could, you know, and should say.
You don't use a pressure washer. You know, you don't want to use
high pressure. It's just pres stinctthat people have when they want to really

(13:56):
clean something. Because we think aboutcleaning moss off the sidewalk and it's like,
well, you just get the pressurewasher out. No, not the
case for the roof. Be carefulwith the hose, don't allow the bleach
to remain on the surface for toomuch, you know, longer than that
twenty minutes that I talked about.Be careful with the bleach rinse you're landscaping
off before and after to make surethat you don't kill anything. And for
some people, it's just going tobe a higher adult project. Yeah,

(14:18):
said that at the beginning, repeatedat the end here. But I think
the important thing is just again like, don't procrastinate on this type of project,
no, because it really does impactthe life of your roof pretty extreme.
Oh yeah, oh yeah, bigtime. So think about that.
Something to just look at today. You know, if the weather's nice,

(14:39):
who knows anymore. I'm giving up. It's going to transition into winter wear,
winter coats everywhere I go. Itisn't an end all fix. You're
going to have to repeat as theyears go by. You can do things
like trim back your branches, makesure you get the debris off the roof,
all the organic debris. That's wherethis comes from. So if you
have to get up there more regularlyand blow it off. Talking to myself,
it's going on my list. Makesure I maintain that and just plan

(15:03):
on regular maintenance. That's what I'mdoing the roof. I mean, like
I said, I got a quotefrom a roofer. It's not inexpensive.
Do what you can to make sureyours is as good as possible for as
long as possible. All Right,we went really long, but I think
that was good info. We're gonnatake a break. When we come back,
we'll start talking about RVs and thenwe'll hit pause and we'll really dig

(15:24):
into it in the third segment. So all of that is coming up in
the next little bit. Stick aroundand we're back. You're listening to the
Rep Colit Home improvement Show sponsored byBenjamin Moore and I just and you.
Hailey laddered on and on about roofsand moss and liking and all of that

(15:46):
and really took up a huge amountof time. But I think it was
important stuff. It's really important.I mean, it's a roof, it
is, and I can't cover everything, you know, I'm thinking back on
the things we said, the thingswe didn't say in the time we've got.
Even if we had full hours,we could cover everything in a project
like that. So I've got fullnotes online. You know. You can
find them in our show notes andyou can find the show notes at repcolite

(16:10):
dot com, ripco lte dot com. Just click the on the radio tab
on the homepage. Get the shownotes much more detail there, and bab
scribe to the podcast. While you'redoing that, you'll never miss an episode
and your life will be that muchmore full. Right. But anyway,
with a project like the roof andcleaning it off, you've got to do
your research, ask questions, besafe if you tackle it. The main
goal that we had in the lastsegment was just to make you aware of

(16:33):
it so that you're you know,it's on your radar. Yeah, and
if Dan can do it, whichyou did, Oh oh you can do
it. If Dan can do it, a blind monkey could figure it out,
right, Is that where you're going? We're here to inspire pet Yeah,
I guess so. All right,So there there's that. I've got
the business out of the way.Let's talk about at least just get started
talking about RVs and camper redos. You know what brought this to your mind

(16:59):
in the first place. I thinkevery single one of my neighbors has an
RV slash camper, and I thinkmost of them could probably use some TLC.
You know. I've been your neighborsone good yes, okay, you're
really being specific here in case theyever loan one to you for the weekend.
Yea, hopefully they don't listen tothe show. Yeah, but no,

(17:22):
my neighbor has a camper and Iwanted it recently and just thought,
man, it wouldn't take a lotto really make this look like something.
You know, I really think that'sthe key. It just doesn't take much.
I mean the right it's more smallspace, a paint involved, or
whatever. Now, some of itis specialty stuff that you would need,
but you don't need a lot ofstuff. No, you wouldn't need a

(17:45):
huge budget. I think there aresome really great DIY friendly projects that you
can do. When I started researching, you know some of these before and
after projects that people have tackled. You know, there's a lot of bloggers
online that have done these projects andhad really amazing results redoing a camper and
making it look like a real home. Well, and I think it's not

(18:07):
just amazing results, but I thinkthe process along the way is incredibly fun
and rewarding. I mean, Ithink about the people who have taken school
buses. Sure it's different, butit's that same idea. It's a small
space and what you can do isreally staggering. Yeah, I would love
to do it myself. I don'thave a camper, which I did,
but I think for everyone out therethat has a space like that that could

(18:30):
so easily be something amazing. Wewant to talk about it, all right.
So that's the pitch. That's theidea. We're going to quick take
a break the Grand Rapids listeners, you get news and weather Detroit listeners.
You're going to get a rep colllight, rewind, and when we're all
back together, we'll be digging intothis camper redo exactly. That's all just
ahead, stick around and we're bacullistening to the Replight Home improvement show sponsored

(19:02):
by Benjamin Moore, and man,we we're dishing out the projects this week.
We've got people heading out to theirroofs. True take here a moss
and liking and algae and all ofthat is a little extreme. And now
we're we're working on getting people totackle their RVs, their campers. Well,
this is those time of year, right, I mean, this is

(19:22):
when people start bringing them out outof storage, thinking about all their summer
vacations and trips that they're going totake in these And I know the weather
is not great, but it's warmenough where you could be out there and
doing something if you're wearing a wintercoat and gloves and hats and all of
that. Yeah, it could be. I am dramatic, no, but

(19:45):
I really I think this is animportant project because I don't know honestly,
and some people might take offense tothis, but oh boy, that's normally
my role, Haley. I don'tknow if like any camper slash RV that
I've seen is like just amazingly decorated. Okay, so it's not up to
Haley state right, like none ofthem. It could be brand new.

(20:07):
I still think it could use somesmall touches, like they are often very
monochromatic, and maybe that's your vibe, and that's great, perfect, it's
already done. But usually they comein like either you're buying a camper that's
a bunch of different shades of beige, or you're buying an updated camper that's

(20:30):
a bunch of different shades of gray. Okay, and that's kind of all
you get. No, and Idon't, I really don't. I think
the reason for that, Well, the reason for that is because it's simple
and right. It's I understand it. Yes, the reason we stick with
that is because nobody thinks about it'snot on our list of it's not even
on our radar, really, right, paint the trailer, right, the

(20:51):
camper or whatever, it seems extra, right, it's extra. The materials
sometimes seem like surfaces that aren't.It's not like drywall and stuff, right,
they're like vinyl plastic kind of materials. So a lot of us assume
that there's just there's way more involved, right. It just doesn't even cross
our minds. It's where we goto camp fun. We don't want to
make it into work and projects, right, but we do yes, because

(21:12):
you love to do that. Wewant other people to tackle these projects because
if we ever rent or borrow oneof these campers with itself to our standards.
Yeah, no, but let's talkabout I really think that's a big
part of it. It's just itdoesn't seem like something I know how to
do instantly, like painting a bedroom, right, and so I just don't
even think about it. No,I think that is a huge aspect of

(21:32):
why these services don't get touched. But I really think there's a lot of
value in tackling some of these projects. And it's not as complicated as it
seems. Well, and I thinkthere's a lot of value in tackling it,
not just because I mean we couldWe've talked about some in the beginning
where they're not in great shape, right. You know, these could be
used something that you've picked up,right, You're seeing a lot of years
and it really Yeah, it couldneed a rich rush, right. But

(21:55):
even just from the point of view, for the same reason you would paint
you know, your rooms with colorsthat like at home, that really changes
how we feel about our own spacesat home. It does. It's also
going to do a huge amount forthese and especially when we're using these things
to get away, get away andto have fun and relax and really check
out. Right, how much morecould that be by just having a great

(22:15):
color exactly? I'm asking Haley,You've got to have an answer for that.
No, a huge impact. Okay, I look at that. Don't
even quantify it. Let's just sayhuge, giant, the biggest impact.
I think potentially this could be moreimportant than tackling your bedroom or more important.
Well, that's like, think aboutthink about it. Why, Okay,

(22:37):
this is your vacation, right,Like, you save up this time
throughout the entire year to really stockon this one week that I get recharge
fully during this week, this oneweek or two weeks of the year.
There's a lot of pressure, itis normally it implodes, right, But

(23:00):
wouldn't it be so much better tospend those crucial two weeks where you get
to recharge in a space that youactually like. No, well, I
think we like the space. Iwould challenge that, but I completely see
where you're going. I'm going tolike it better. Yes, it's going
to be more appealing. All ofthat. So let's talk about some of
the things that we could do inthe RVs. I think you've pitched the
case for why it's important. Yes, valuable. I've been very dramatic along

(23:23):
the way. Extremely I'm rubbing offon you. Yes, let's walk through
some practical things that you could tackleand let's start. So the first one,
Yeah, obviously paint, that's whatwe do here. But it's really
so easy to transform an RV ora camper with just paint. And it's
like you said, those surfaces thatwe question whether they can be painted right

(23:48):
because the walls of campers and RVsare not drywall. You know, we're
not used to painting this type ofmaterial. And yes, it can be
painted. You just have to dosome extra steps before you can actually apply
that latex or acrylic paint. Sowhat would the steps be. First,
we'd have to start by cleaning anddegree always clean, but that's every case,
right, every situation, clean, dry and dull, right, does

(24:12):
not matter what we're painting, we'repainting, it should always be cleaned thoroughly
first. It's really crucial. Itdoesn't sound like it should make that big
of a difference, but it reallydoes. So a cleaner like TSP would
be good. You can use Spraynine, which is a cleaner that we've
got. It's a degreaser. Challengeris another great degreaser. Basically, just

(24:33):
get the surfaces really clean, Scotchbright Pad which will a little bit exactly,
and get it rinsed really well.So now you've got your surface cleaned.
Now. The big, really, the only big difference between painting this
and just a normal wall is aprimer step in between. Yeah, and
the primer that we'd recommend is sticks. It's a bonding primer, so it's

(24:53):
specifically built to adhere or stick tothese hard to it your two surfaces,
like the vinyl plastics, like PVC, all kinds of stuff. We've tested
it on glass glazed tile. Itstill adheres to these surfaces. Yeah,
we talk about it all the time. Magic a really really great product from

(25:14):
Inselects, which is a Benjamin Moorecompany. Right, Like you said,
we've had it on glass blocks thatwe bring to shows, and you can't
scratch it off. You can scratchlike a tiny little bit off. You've
really got to work at it.Yeah, exactly. Once you put that
on these surfaces, now you canjust go to whatever finished paint you want,
right and you're going to have greatresults and it's going to last.
And I really think that they're youknow, there's something to be said by

(25:37):
just brightening the walls of an RVaRcamper. You know, they're probably like
a mid tone beige or a grayright now. Just going to a white,
you know, you don't have toget super crazy in here. Just
making a clean slate and nice bright, neutral white that's going to enhance the
light that you're getting in the space, make it feel a little bit more

(25:59):
open. An airy I think goesa long way, right And once you've
done the cleaning and the primer stepand then you got your first coat of
paint on or your your two coatsof paint at that point three years down
the road, you don't have togo back to that prim or step ever
again. True, yeah, rightnow, it's just any surface. So
products you could use Optima from Repclite, ben from Benjamin More, scuff X

(26:22):
would be great. Yes. RepColite makes care Free, which is a
little you know, maybe a betterprice point in certain regards. Ultraspect from
Benjamin Moore would be another good pricepoint type product. Lots of products out
there, and i'd recommend you know, you don't have to go to like
the highest sheen for these spaces either. I think that a lot of us

(26:42):
probably still have the idea that wehave to use, you know, a
satin or a semi gloss if wewant something to be durable. That's really
not the case anymore. You canput an eggshell or a matt finish on
these walls and they can still holdup really well with retability and all that.
So stop out at any repclite, tell us what you're working on.
We can make some product recommendations basedon your budget, based on what you

(27:03):
want out of product, all ofthose things. What about cabinets. We
talked about walls, right, cabinets, I mean basically process right, so
much would work and like you know, built in cabinets in these campers and
RVs, and I get it.You know, storage is at a premium
in these spaces. They're really small, and so they put a cabinet wherever

(27:25):
they can possibly fit one. Butit really weighs the space down when it's
all of that oak wood that mostof these outdated campers are going to have,
and just a coat of paint oakor oak with the quotation marks,
like kind of picture right. Ok. Yes, it's got that vibe that
feel. Basically the process is goingto be very similar, right do ye

(27:48):
cleaning if it's real wood, ifit happened to have that scuff standing,
and then stix primer again yea.If it's not real wood, just get
it really good and clean, youknow, use the Scotch or fad sticks
primer and then a good finished paint. Right. It's really not that complicated.
I know it seems like it shouldbe, you know, more should
go into that, but it's reallypretty straightforward. And while you're painting the

(28:11):
cabinets, replace the hardware. Justtake that brass hardware off of their maybe
even just paint it. You know, you could just paint it a matte
black and have it look really good. But really it's not a giant investment
to update the hardware, and itreally makes a huge difference. I did
that it really hitch in and Iwas stunned that just the hardware. Why

(28:32):
don't change that? Made same thinghere? What other things you got,
Haley? So we've talked about paint, but really replacing things like the fabric
in the space, the cushions forall of those seats, you know,
the window coverings. Both of thosethings make a huge impact because again,
these fabrics get dated over time orthey get really worn out and now they're

(28:57):
not as nice to look at ismaybe they once were. It's also just
an opportunity to add color, texture, pattern into a space that's really small.
And if you're keeping a lot ofthese finishes neutral, like the walls
in the cabinets, then I dothink that these both add quite a bit
of opportunity for a design impact. So I can sew them myself if I'm

(29:18):
good with that. There are someno so options, Okay, that's what
I'm interested in, yes, becauseyeah, I think a lot of people
might be intimidated, like thinking aboutall of the different weird sized cushions that
make up those chairs or couches orlike the beds in a camper, And
if you're not a seamstress, thatprobably seems pretty daunting. It seems impossible.

(29:42):
Yes, I can't figure out howI would go about doing that.
So there are options. And obviouslyyou know you could go to a camber
place and they would charge you alot of money to recover these so cheaper
option yeah, so online you canactually find these stretchy fabric covers that will

(30:03):
go over a variety of sized cushionsthat are perfect for this. I mean,
they've got really good reviews. Thisis something that's great for a camber
too, because you can take theseoff. There's like slip covers, right,
So you take them off, throwthem in the washer, put them
back on. Now you've got aclean surface again. So I think they're
very practical and they don't require youto sew. They're really inexpensive, and

(30:26):
they come in a variety of colors. Okay, so we'll put links.
You've got the show okay, linksin the show notes. Yeah, I
think Haley, we're gonna have topause here. You've got more stuff.
I've got more stuff. So Ithink we're gonna finish that up in the
next segment, and then when weget done with that, we'll talk about
kind of have a yeah, agoodbye, a farewell to Haley. All
of that is coming up in thenext little bit. Stick around, and

(30:56):
we're Bacculre listening to the REPC LightHome Improvement Show sponsored by Benjamin Moore,
and it's a weird one. Thisweek. We have bled over, like
all our segments have been big andthey've bled over. Normally we're nice and
clean and we like to keep themin little tight boxes. Yeah, we're
kind of gross and filthy. Notreally, that's the wrong way to say
that. We're free. We're free, free and easy exactly, way better

(31:21):
than filthy. Anyway, we're talkingabout RVs, updating RVs. I think
it's a really great topic because youcan do so much with so little.
Exactly, it's such a small space. It doesn't take a huge budget,
and it makes a huge impact.Right, we'd already talked about painting,
and we covered how to cover andpaint some of these really strange surfaces that
are in an RV or a camper, specialty primers, things like that.

(31:44):
We talked about all of that inthe last segment. You can find it
if if that piques your interest, just go to Repcolit dot com, click
the on the radio tab and youcan relsten to this one. We talked
about putting new hardware on. Wetalked about recovering your cushions and stuff like
that. Haley, what's next onyour list of things you're demanding that people
do well? I also demand thatthe window coverings be addressed. A lot

(32:07):
of these campers or RVs have likethose bulky window box balances that go over
and kind of hide where the blindsgo. It's really outdated. I think
it really weighs the space down. These are not areas that have high ceilings,
and so to put a clunky, upholstered box over the top of a

(32:28):
window, it just really weighs itdown. So we're removing those and adding
curtains can go a long way andupdating the space, all right, So
pretty simple. That's something I thinkI could even pull off. Yeah,
you don't even have so okay ifI wanted, if you wanted to,
you could and it wouldn't be hard. However, they also make these no
so curtain rings where it's just youknow, a little ring that would go

(32:51):
over a curtain rod, but onthe end it's got a little clip,
so you literally just clip the ringto the fabric that you would cut to
size to use for a curtain. So super simple, really simple. It
actually looks really good. I've seena lot of like farmhouse blogs using these,
and they're actually using them. Funnyenough, with dropcloth fabric, the

(33:13):
canvas drop cloths are kind of likeas the materials. The material for no
treatments. Yeah, it's like areally easy DIY curtain. Just get some
canvas dropcloth, use these no socurtain rod hooks, and you're good to
go. Well, we've got thecanvas drop cloth. It looks surprisingly fresh.

(33:35):
I mean, I wouldn't we've talkedabout it before. I wouldn't think
to necessarily apply it in my ownhome, But after seeing these pictures,
I'm curious too. Okay, allright, well that's interesting. We've got
that in the show notes. Whatother things do you want to cover before
we focus on saying goodbye to you? So that's a funny way to say
that, isn't it. It's alot of pressure how they handle executions and

(34:00):
states that do that. I wantto really quickly touch on peel and stick
tile back splashes and peel and stickflooring, Okay, and I think we
can cover them both at the sametime. These surfaces are obviously going to
make a giant impact, right we'retalking about the flooring. That's a huge
surface that you're looking at redoing inan RV. But it's small on the

(34:21):
grand scale of huge in the scopeof impact, yes, but not huge
in space. Right, You wouldn'tneed a lot of flooring, and peel
and stick tiles I've found have heldup surprisingly well. Right, You kind
of pulled your nose up at them. We all do. Yeah, it's
not cheap obviously, and it's notgonna last blah blah blah blah blah.
But in a space like an RV, it can be redone very very easily,

(34:44):
very inexpensively, so even if youonly get a couple of years out
of it. And honestly, I'vehad peel and stick tiles in my bathroom
now, in the main bathroom. It's held up for two years and I
can't even tell any difference from theday that I first got that. Well,
and the one that you bought andinstalled was the bottom of the barrel.
Yes, cheap, cheap, gotrot cheap. It was the only

(35:06):
brand that I could find that hadlike a penny tile pattern that I wanted,
and it's held up beautifully. Yeah, I think that is a really
smart thing. There's peel and stickcarpet squares too. If right was your
thing, you know, wood panthe faux would, but still you can
get a wood looking floor that's peeland stick and extremely inexpensive and easy to

(35:28):
install, and you've updated the spacein a major, major way. Tear
out the gross carpet, get itout of there, put some nice faue
wood down. Now. I likeall of that. Anything last that you
want to say. Again, we'reback to feeling like this is something more
severe than it is. Any lastwords, Hailey, Oh my gosh.

(35:49):
I think the point is just thatthese spaces can be tackled very easily.
I think it's worth doing, andit really doesn't take a huge budget because
it is such a small space. All Right, I really like that.
I think it's a great topic. But we're gonna put it to bad let
it, let it go. Andnow we've got to say goodbye to Haley.
Yeah, this is real, reallyreally annoying to me. Actually he's

(36:13):
pregnant. Now, yeah, let'stalk about me, Haley. That's what
I want to focus on. You'retaking this in the wrong direction. It's
going to be all alone's sad andyou all I have to listen to him
and it'll be very hard for you, but I urge you to keep listening
to the show. She's so worriedthat we're gonna lose listeners by the time
you get back. Now, it'llbe fine. We've got a plan.

(36:36):
Dan Altina, president of rep Collite, is going to fill in. Yes,
he's been on the show before. He actually filled in between when Betsy
left and I started. So someof you are probably familiar with his voice
already. He's a good guy.Give him a chance. Yeah, I
know he's not me, but he'svery excited and that'll be fun. So
that that's all coming up, let'sjust talk about you. I was joking

(36:59):
about this is all about me.It's all about you. You've got big
things going on. You've got alife within you. I mean, I
don't have much to talk. Wedon't have much. I didn't before.
I am very curious about the idea. You know, that's such a strange
concept. I mean we're all usedto it, you know, a baby
inside. But yeah, we takefor granted a whole other person. Yeah,

(37:19):
in you. It's very person, with his own brain, his own
thoughts, his own baby thoughts, baby's dream you know, isn't that wild?
What are they dream about? Idon't know. So interesting that when
he's kicking his feet like the dog, when the dog's dreaming the dogs.
I wonder if when Wallace is dreamingthat's what's cooking. What does that feel
like to walk around knowing that? It's pretty surreal, Like there's no real

(37:46):
words to put it into. It'sjust very surreal. It's Yeah, that's
pretty indescribable. But I'm excited toget to the next part where I actually
meet to Yeah, I think that'sreally cool. I think it's funny.
You came back from one of yourmost recent doctor's appointments and you know,

(38:07):
everything's great, everything's checking out great. But his head is measuring enormous,
which is problematic. They are allthe listeners out there. A little bit,
I found out that his head isin the ninety fourth percentile. I'm
telling you, it just means bigbrains, Haley. Anyway, it's big

(38:28):
news. We're sorry to see yougo. I know you'll be checking in.
I'll update everybody, yes, asto your progress in all of that.
Absolutely, and yeah, we allwish you the best, Haley,
and we're excited to have you comeback. Yeah, it's exciting times.
All right, that's all the timewe've got. We're going to wrap it
up. If you want to catchthis one again, you can find it
online at repcal Light dot com whateveryou do today, make sure it paints

(38:50):
a part of it. The repCoal light stores are all open waiting to
help. I'm Dan Hanson, I'mHaley Johnson. Thanks for listening.
