Speaker 1 (04:20):
Crackett go up four one.
Speaker 7 (04:23):
With three twenty nine to play in regulation.
Speaker 6 (04:27):
Well, there's that hard work I talked about. This time
it's Ryan Lingered in the corner going to battle and
getting a puck up the boards, and who's waiting for
it there, Jayden Schwartz, and he ammers this puck down
the ice into the open cage for one cracket.
Speaker 2 (04:40):
Pretty impressive all things considered. Matt Murray was starting goaltender,
exiting Laton period had one due to a lower body injury.
Lane Lambert saying on Monday he is still under evaluation
for his prognosis. The Philip grow Bauer played his best
when the cracket needed him the most, turning in a
nineteen save effort on nineteen shots with a krack and
(05:01):
finishing their home stand at two oh and one in
a four to one victory over San Jose. Freddy Goodrow
making his return to the lineup in that game, and
he spoke more with the media after practice on Monday
in Detroit.
Speaker 4 (05:15):
Got back into it on Saturday night and had five
different penalty kills going on, how'd that feel for you?
Being out there again?
Speaker 10 (05:22):
Felt really good to be with that team again.
Speaker 3 (05:25):
You know.
Speaker 10 (05:25):
It's uh, I don't know.
Speaker 8 (05:27):
Sometimes in the season you get into momentum and just
go again and again, and about when you're away, you
really cherish it even more and it makes you realize
how special it is to play all key every day
and be with a group like that every day.
Speaker 10 (05:42):
So, uh yeah, it gave me.
Speaker 8 (05:44):
Even a bigger sense of wanting to save her, save
it all, and it was it was fun to be there.
Speaker 4 (05:51):
And overall, obviously first p K, you guys like to
have that one back, but the other five, you guys
look like you were connecting.
Speaker 10 (05:59):
Yeah, it's adjustments for sure. Every time.
Speaker 8 (06:02):
Every day you're trying to get better, trying to tweak stuff.
There's a that goal we gave up there is you know,
it's again it's just adjustment, learning from it, and that's
all you got to keep moving forward with with everything basically,
but especially with the peaking.
Speaker 4 (06:16):
You and Tie obviously not only kill penalties together. You've
been on the line with them. You have new men,
you may have others. I mean when you have to
adjust or get to know new linemates, do you take
the lead on talking to them and what you want
them to do and vice versa.
Speaker 8 (06:31):
Uh, you don't really say I want you to do
this or that because they're all on real players. So
it's just more about Yeah, it's about just staying together,
staying connected, you know, chatting, staying positive. I like it
when we when we stay positive. And Tie is such
a fun guy to play with.
Speaker 10 (06:52):
It's been awesome.
Speaker 8 (06:53):
He brings he brings it every night and he's extremely
positive every day and so it's been a lot of
fun to play with.
Speaker 4 (07:01):
So but yeah, I know it wasn't much fun to watch,
But what do you think where they is the way
the guys played while you while you were out really good.
Speaker 8 (07:09):
Yeah, you know, it was fun to watch. It wasn't
as fun as playing, obviously, but it was fun to
see them compete like that and stay together. He it's
a it's a fun group. It's really fun to be
around them and to be in the team and to
see the way they just competed every day. I was
just proud to be on that team.
Speaker 6 (07:28):
When you're out, are you are you in film?
Speaker 3 (07:30):
Are you around the guys as much?
Speaker 6 (07:32):
What's that process like for you when you're not playing.
Speaker 8 (07:36):
No, it was just more about getting myself back in
the game, getting my body ready again, and uh, I'm
watching it on my own. But no, there wasn't. I mean, yeah,
we were. We were actually involved in like team meetings.
When when the team is is at home on the road,
obviously we're we're just kind of doing our own stuff.
But when the team's at home, we were involved in
(07:57):
the meetings and stuff just to stay sharp.
Speaker 10 (07:59):
Yeah, pretty pretty.
Speaker 6 (08:01):
Do you look at the schedule in chunks or are
you more of a game to game guy? And depending
on your answer, what do you look for in terms
of goals for this trip or goals.
Speaker 8 (08:10):
For tomorrow night. You know, the my wife and my mom,
they know my schedule more than me, to be honest,
that's just the truth. I I'm just a day to
day guy, and I approach it at data time. I
think sometimes it's not really worth it looking too far.
The reality is you get one game to focus on
and is the next one. And that's that's about it
(08:32):
for me.
Speaker 3 (08:32):
So what are your personal goals going to the game
tomorrow night?
Speaker 8 (08:35):
Just the details, you know, it's I pride myself in
doing the things right on the ice and I feel
like that's the way I can. I can do my
best to all the team have success. And that's the
thing for me. You know, when when you're away for
it was a month for me, Like I said, you're
(08:56):
kind of out of those things. You just gotta when
you come back, you gotta get all those tails back
in your game instinctually. And that's that's my focus, just
getting more and more dial and those those all right.
Speaker 2 (09:08):
Joining us now on Cracking this morning. Alison lu Can,
great friend of ours. She tells a great story. As usual,
I'm back to bez always by the numbers. You can
see her of course Crack and Hockey Network pregame in
emissions postgame as well her handywork at seattlecrackin dot com.
Also one through of the Too Many Men podcast are
Hello to Sarah and Shana as well, Alison, A hearty
(09:30):
hello to you as well. Thank you for a few minutes.
But I mean, what a way to finish off the
homestand against San Jose. How'd you feel about these guys
walking out of the building after Saturday.
Speaker 9 (09:42):
Well, first and foremost, thanks for having me, Mike, I
appreciate it. Yeah, there's a lot to like about this
group right now. I liked little bouts of adversity coming
up in that last game versus San Jose. I think
specifically of the start of the game when San Jose
once again tried to do what I thought they did
(10:02):
to this team a week ago, where they set the tone,
they set the pace, and the Kraken righted the ship
and started playing crack and hockey instead. And then Matt
Murray unfortunately leaves the game and Philip Grubauer comes in
response to that adversity with just an absolutely stellar performance,
and then that stellar performance is what saves them at
(10:23):
the start of the second period when they were basically
getting shelled for the first two to three minutes. So
seeing those lessons, learning from them, This just continues to
be a theme for me under head coach Lane Lambert
that this group is buying in. They want to get
better and they're going to do whatever they can to
address the areas that they need to as quickly as possible.
Speaker 2 (10:42):
Yeah, I love you touch on the goaltending part here
because this was so important I think for this last
week and in context, Joey to Cord could be back
soon and depending on how long Matt Murray's going to
be out.
Speaker 3 (10:54):
Of action, we'll see.
Speaker 2 (10:54):
But Philip Grubauer certainly picked a good time to have
a first are kind of night on Saturday. Allison, when's
the last time you're remember seeing him this dialed in?
Speaker 9 (11:06):
Well, you know me, I went and looked up the
numbers and if we look at how much he exceeded
expectations in that last game, and remember it wasn't even
a full game for him, right, It was just over
forty minutes, so he didn't have the full sixty to
build up as much of an advantage. This was the
fifth best performance of his cracking career and only one
(11:29):
was better last season, and that was against Boston in December,
so this was I think it was Chandler Stevenson who
said postgame, this was vintage Groobauer. I love seeing him
come out authoritatively like that, and he was again. I
couldn't stop talking about him in postgame, and I'll keep
talking about him because it was just an amazing, amazing performance,
(11:49):
top twenty all time of his career.
Speaker 3 (11:51):
The talk was certainly well deserved.
Speaker 2 (11:53):
As Alison Luke an joining us right now on Cracking
this morning, I want to put the spotlight for a
moment on Jaden Schwartz because almost at a point where
people start defining difference makers, haves, have nots and more
with us about nearly a quarter of the way here
through the season, and we've heard so much about how
goaltending matters, Matty Benier's and whoever he plays with matters,
(12:15):
how the new guys can kick in as well. So
I won't go there yet with potential MVP candidate talk
for this team, but I frame it like this, It's
scary to think where this team would be without Jayden
Schwartz right now. What defines the kind of start he's
having right now thre eighteen games to you.
Speaker 9 (12:33):
Yeah, you know, it's I have this conversation with people
quite a bit actually about how he just stays under
the radar while being just such an integral part of
what this group does when they're having success. You watch him,
He's always going to the net front. You watch his
little detail plays in small areas, his hockey IQ. It's
(12:54):
I think back, you know, I say this all the
time to last season Jordan everly goes down and what
veterans steps up and tries to put this team on
his back, and none other than Jaden Schwartz. So it's
really a testament to how he prepares and how he
thinks the game and how he contributes that he can
do so many things and still not get as much
(13:15):
of a spotlight as perhaps he should. And again once again,
you know, he's already got two multi goal games this season.
He's just been really important for this club, and I
think that he has to be in the room as well.
Speaker 2 (13:27):
The Kraken could see jere mccamm back this week, which
could certainly help this lineup situation. That's TBD on the matter,
but I mean getting him back on ice recently in
practice is certainly a good sign morning skate as well.
But Freddie goodrou getting back on ice. I thought Allison
was so important too, And I mean one game doesn't
tell us maybe everything, But what were you reminded of
(13:47):
with the value that he's got in this lineup from
this last weekend.
Speaker 9 (13:50):
Yeah, I think in first and foremost, it's the obvious
in terms of the PK and in terms of defensive
zone faith off the Again, here's the out for you.
Before he went down with injury, he and Chandler's he
and Chandler Stevenson were taking each about thirty percent of
the defensive zone face off, and when he went down,
Chandler started taking over fifty percent of defensive zone face off.
(14:14):
So he's going to help there, going to be part
of that number one PK. But this is another guy,
you know, even in the chances we've had to talk
to him and fans have been able to hear from him,
he's he's just such a great person and a great spirit,
and I think that that really helps bring the bind
and the bonds together in the room among the guys.
(14:35):
And he's got that versatility. He can play up the lineup,
he can play in all situations. I'm waiting to see
him in the shootout. He's got tremendous skill there that
we haven't been able to see yet. But I'm really
glad he's back.
Speaker 2 (14:48):
Yeah, that preseason shootout goal that he had was delicious.
And I mean I go back and think of something
that you pointed out and that he's got one of
the backgrounds that you can certainly root for, you know,
him coming up the minor league ranks, even at the EHL.
Everything is earned, nothing is given, and that's why you
can appreciate somebody like Freddie Gudreau and his background. And
something that you also pointed out elsewhere I thought on
(15:11):
the Craken website, I thought that was a gold nugget.
Adam Larson's goal marked twelve goals from their defenseman. Only
two have as much or more in this league, and
that's the Capitals and the Blue Jackets. I said Riker
Evans getting back in there. It takes them up a
notch with their mobility. But what are you making of
this effort collectively? That reminds you of a team that
(15:33):
is serious about contention?
Speaker 9 (15:36):
Yeah, you know, I mean this is a team and
the way I like to say it is when they
say we need offensive contributions from our depth. That's not
just forward depth, that's defensive depth as well. And you know,
I think that definitely Vince Done, Brandon Montur and you know,
hopefully Riker as well are part of this new wave
of what a defender looks like, which is a lot
(15:58):
more offensively minded. Now that all being said, it's great
to get these goals from the defense, but you know, hopefully,
as you pointed out, Jared mccannon is coming back, because
you do want the lion's share of your production coming
from your forward group. There are more of them that's
play in the game, so getting them going is equally
as important so that as the defenders contribute, they're not
(16:19):
the only contributors on the scoreesheet.
Speaker 2 (16:21):
All right, looking ahead here, first matchup of the Red
Wings coming up. Alex To Brinkett name second Star of
the Week in the NHL, and they've got an offense
that can just frighten you with the core that they have.
But Tom McClellan was pretty tense on their ability to
close out games. After a bad Buffalo overtime lost this
last weekend, they came back and beat the Rangers and
(16:43):
then Pandora's box opened on the ice after that. But
I mean, what's the big key for you coming up
here tonight for this game against the Red Wings.
Speaker 9 (16:52):
Yeah, I'm going to be watching. Obviously, they're stars. You've
got to Brinket as the star of the week. As
you mentioned second start, he's on a point, Street Keys
on a goal streak, Raymond, Cider, Lark and Caine go
down the list. But for me, it's also about keeping
things that even strength on both sides. This is a
team that is eighth in terms of taking penalties and
(17:13):
eighth in terms of drawing penalties. So keeping in at
even strength, not letting their power play get going. They
move into i believe, right outside the top ten in
goals when you look at power play production so far
this season. So even strength, and then also just being
really sound defensively. This group doesn't get net front as much.
That's something Tom McClelland has been harping on them as well.
(17:36):
That's how they when they score, that's what they're doing.
So protecting, protecting the house, that dangerous area that blue
paint is going to be critical as it always is.
Speaker 3 (17:45):
Great stuff, Allison.
Speaker 2 (17:46):
We talk about even strength you make this TV side
always compete at full strength. Keep up the great work.
We'll get you back on soon, but in the meantime,
have a great show here for this evening.
Speaker 9 (17:56):
Thanks again, right back at Ja Mike, thanks so much
for having me a right.
Speaker 2 (18:00):
Allison, Thank you very much again. Alison Luken our friend
from the TV side, Crack and Hockey Network. You can
find her pregame, intermission and postgame also her written handiwork
on seattlecracking dot com. Additionally in the podcast space part
of the Too Many Men podcast with Sarah Sivian and
Shana Goldman. Looking ahead here to this saving a little
bit more the Crack and facing Detroit once again after
(18:22):
this game this next month at Climb the Pledge Arena
on December sixth, and the Crack and trying to keep
a good thing going. They have points in nine in
the last eleven games, six two to three record in
that run. Maddy Beniers maybe picking his game up here
also at a pretty ideal time, and you go back
to his Calder Trophy campaign back in twenty twenty two
(18:43):
to twenty three, when he scored twenty four goals and
nearly hit the sixty point plateau. This season start is
actually the best of his career twelve points so far
in the first eighteen games. He leads the cracking right
now with ten assists. As far as other injury updates,
head coach Lane Lambert Monday confirming Jared McCann and goaltender
(19:03):
Joey de Cord on the trip, they are progressing and
we'll keep an eye as far as when they are
due to return.
Speaker 3 (19:09):
Here to the lineup.
Speaker 2 (19:10):
They're cracking right now, catching the Red Wings and a
little bit of a funk.
Speaker 3 (19:14):
As we said.
Speaker 2 (19:15):
They come off a two to one win over the
New York Rangers, spelled by a Benz clearing altercation at
the final horn, but the Red Wings playing like a
pretty frustrated club in the most recent stretch, win less
in four of their last six games, but yet still
hanging around the top of the Atlantic Division at eleven
seven and one, tied for second with the Montreal Canadians.
(19:36):
As far as that core, who leads the Red Wings,
no surprise, it's Dylan Larkin, with a twenty three point
campaign so far through nineteen games, also pacing the Red
Wings with eleven goals. Alex to Brinkett last week NHL's
second Star honors Zs twenty one points in nineteen games,
and Patrick Kane, who is making a strong case as
ever for the Hall of Fame. He sits one point
(19:56):
behind Gi Lafleur for thirtieth all time in NHL scoring,
recently picking a point number one thousand, three hundred and
fifty two. The crack and trying to stop all that
in Detroit tracks this evening once again four pm Pacific
time put drop from Little Caesar's Arena, airtime coverage of
three point thirty and we certainly hope that you can
(20:17):
join us. Big thank you again to Alison Lucan for
joining us and for kracking this morning. I'm Mike Benton.
Have a happy Tuesday and enjoy the game.
Speaker 1 (20:25):
You're home for the Kraken Sports Radio ninety three point
three kJ R FM.
