Speaker 4 (00:47):
We're gonna have the in forness of the KRACK and
Hockey Network coming up in a little bit, as we're
going to talk about the Coppo Cocko trade going down today,
the Cracking getting the twenty three year old four from
the New York Rangers in exchange for defenseman Will Borgan
and a pair of draft picks, one in the third round,
one in the sixth round in twenty twenty five. The
Kracking getting a forward who at one point was the
(01:09):
second overall pick in the NHL draft, right behind Jack Hughes.
Speaker 2 (01:13):
In twenty nineteen. He hit eighteen goals two years ago.
That was his career high.
Speaker 4 (01:18):
The Caapocaco leaving a New York Rangers team that is
right now smoldering with chaos, losing eleven of their last
fourteen games while dropping out of the playoff picture in
the Eastern Conference and at one point leaving Coco as
a healthy scratch this past Sunday in a three to
two loss at Saint Louis. To capitalize on the opportunity,
the Cracking had to part ways with defenseman Will Borgan,
(01:40):
who will be a pending free agent this offseason, plus
the two draft picks. Borgan most well known as a
physical defenseman on the Krakend back end ever since the
first season in franchise history, and playing a significant role
in their first round upside of the Colorado Avalanche in
seven games with a physical brand back on their blue line,
(02:00):
Morgan leaving the Kraken with a pretty formidable mark, playing
in two hundred and sixteen consecutive regular season games, sixth
longest iron man streak by a defenseman in the NHL.
Coco this season with fourteen points in thirty games. It'll
play for Team Finland coming up at the Four Nations
face off in February in Montreal and Boston.
Speaker 2 (02:22):
Let's jump into it. Ian Furness joining us right now.
Speaker 4 (02:25):
Ian Furness, of course, the mayorra Maple Valley Apropos. He
joins us here for a day where Ian it just
kind of felt like that maybe, uh, your hair was
on fire. We had the Jay Dickert news and all
of a sudden, we have this going down. Did you
get in the car and just immediately slamm the play
button to Billy Joels, We didn't start the fire.
Speaker 3 (02:46):
I should have. I liked that idea. That would have
been a good call, a really good call.
Speaker 2 (02:51):
Well, let's digest.
Speaker 4 (02:53):
Coppocaco is coming to Seattle, Will Borgan is out the door.
Two draft picks out the door. There's a lot to
unpack here. So you what do we make about the trade?
Speaker 3 (03:05):
Well, I think they had to do something, and now
time will tell whether this has been not. You know
what we saw on Tuesday, it was just it was unacceptable.
I think. I mean, I know I'm harsh here, but
that is not what people pay to go see a
(03:28):
climate pledge Aarina's not what people tune into the Crack
and Hockey Network or the Crack and Audio Network to
see you listen, and why it's there's they needed a jumpstart,
and you know, sometimes you just got to make a deal.
I don't want to say you make a deal to
make a deal because upside here, but I think that's
(03:48):
that they had to do something. And you know what, well, I.
Speaker 2 (03:54):
Will say this.
Speaker 4 (03:54):
I ended the night last night with Curtis Crabtree on
Talking Crack and where I use the analogy of salts,
and this team needed a healthy dose of smelling salts
in some shape or form after being an outscored a
combined eight to one of those losses from Tampa Bay
to the Ottawa game, and it just seemed like that
(04:15):
there was just nothing going.
Speaker 2 (04:17):
There was no life against Ottawa.
Speaker 4 (04:19):
And so I think what you're doing right here is
that you gelt Copocaco into this lineup and you're making
a bet. You're making a trade here for potential and
he's making two point four mil right now. Ian as
a potential restricted free agent coming up down the road,
and this is his last year as only year of
this deal.
Speaker 2 (04:36):
Something interesting.
Speaker 4 (04:37):
I heard from Elliott Friedman as this thing broke. What
ha surprise you to see something long term worked out
here between the team and Copocaco?
Speaker 3 (04:47):
Whoa, because he's in the last year of his deal, right, Yes,
I don't know. I think you have to wait and see,
don't you. Yeah, I mean, I mean, he's he's right
around half a point a game guy right now. Now
he's at fourteen points in thirty games. I think you
got to wait and see what you get with this guy.
I now listen now that I say that they gave
(05:11):
up Will Morgan, they gave up two draft picks, so
there was some capital giving up. So I guess maybe
that would make sense that that would that would be
something you would do. But I don't know, Mikey, that's
just that's that's that's interesting. I think you still want
to see something. I think you still want to see
something from him.
Speaker 4 (05:30):
Eighteen goals was his career high set two years ago.
So then my next dot goes as far is where
he fits in this lineup. I'm curious where they try
him here because Matty Veneers needs something and he has
just seen a revolving door of wingers for this season.
And they could use something to jump start him. Chandler
Stevenson could use something. Jared McCann has gone dry. Where
(05:54):
do you like Cocko as a winger?
Speaker 3 (05:56):
More?
Speaker 2 (05:56):
At this point?
Speaker 3 (05:57):
Who who? Question? The first question is when did Yannie
come back? Right? So, like, let's if Yanni comes back tomorrow.
I think he slotted him back with the Niars, right,
I mean that's I think that makes sense. On the
left side. You don't want to I don't even though
(06:17):
you did nothing last night as a team offense, but
I don't think you want to break up the Shane
right line, right, Yeah, so he probably slots in with that.
He slot in with with Burakowsky and Stevenson. No where
to Shorts go then, right, So.
Speaker 4 (06:33):
Well Schwartz goes I think with Matty Vanier's and you
put him with Yanni Gord as well, because then then
then you would have Jared McCann as far as where
you also fit him.
Speaker 3 (06:43):
Yeah, because you added a forward today, you're getting you're getting.
Let's say you get Yanni back, Beverly still out, you
bump Canna down to the fourth line, right, yeah, Like
I think he bumps down to the fourth line, Mitch,
I'll say this. I don't think Mitchell Stevens is coming
out of the line of any times soon, right, yeah,
I mean he's he's If he's not PK one, he's
(07:04):
p K two, you know, right, So, uh well, this
gives all let's just say this. It gives Dan Biles
some options and and it gives you some depth and
maybe I mean, can you do you put Yanni in them?
Do you sit? Okay, I'm gonna say something. At what
(07:25):
point do you sit? Do you Sippneers? I mean what
at what point do you do that? You know, you
sat Chane Ruddy, you sat Oliver by Yorick strand you
sat Andre Berakowski. At what point does Matti Vanier sit
for a game and watching the press box and try
to reset? Maybe tomorrow, maybe on Thursday? I should say,
(07:47):
I think.
Speaker 4 (07:48):
At this point with Matty Evaniers's game, and this is
something that I brought up with Curtis Crabtree the other night,
you have to kind of be careful, I think, in
how you read different players and how they react to
being a scratch. And I don't want to get presumptuous
here on Maddie's game, but it just leads us here
to ask. There's obviously something going on with them, and
(08:10):
it looks like right now it's mental, that's.
Speaker 1 (08:12):
All it is.
Speaker 3 (08:13):
Well, let's assuming healthy. So that's the only other option
unless he's hurt. The only other option is it's mental. Yeah, so,
and it's lack of confidence whatever it is. And then
people say, well, if the systom is that can to
hurt his confidence, I don't think he has any to
be in with right now. He's just not playing with confidence.
And we've said this on television. I'm sure you guys
(08:37):
have said on the radio, this is not, this is
not let's bash Maddy Veneers. The reality is, though poor
jaredy Cannery reveals. The reality is is that you can't
go fifteen now sixteen games about Matty Vanier's scoring. You
can't have Jared mccannon have two goals one being an
empty vetter in fifteen or sixteen game stretches and expect
(08:59):
to be successful. This team has those guys must have
to produce. If they don't, you're going nowhere as a team.
You just aren't. So I think from from that standpoint, mighty,
I think that you you just you have to get
to that point where these guys are getting a jump start,
(09:20):
if that means sitting a game. In Vanier's case, I
don't think you sat mc can. You certainly don't sit
the can he gives you more.
Speaker 4 (09:27):
But he had five shots on that and Matty Vaneers
on Tuesday had none.
Speaker 3 (09:33):
Right, no shots on goal, no shots.
Speaker 4 (09:35):
On even if you look at the shot quality at
five on five, I said this the other night and
Austin Matthews, John Tavares, Nathan McKinnon, Leon Dry is titled
on the chorus, Connor McDavid.
Speaker 2 (09:47):
What do they all have in common? They are superstars
in this league.
Speaker 4 (09:51):
Shot quality share at five on five, they're all north
of fifty percent, some touching sixty percent. Matty Banier's entering
last night's game was at forty eight percent. There were
two centers better than him entering that game, and Yonnie
Gord and Shane Wright. And again it wasn't something as
you said that to pick on him, but something is
(10:12):
bothering him right now and they need him back at
a rate where he was producing two years ago. It's
a different game now for him. He can't hide anywhere.
He's of course getting tough matchups. Series defense has been
great for the most part, that's a given. But he's
got to embrace those tough responsibilities and also it expects
some bumps in the road in that regard, but for
(10:34):
it to go this long Ian is concerning because when
he's clearly on, he's on, he takes over games. He
drives offense, and that's what he wants to be as
a guy who drives offense. Unfortunately it's just been too
few and far between.
Speaker 3 (10:45):
Well, I think guess what he saw the assists on
was at the New York tamp Power Player Goal Cup, right,
and just walked the defenseman in, just walked him back
them up and just a beautiful play. And I go
back to the game, the Carolina game, and in that game,
from the very start, from the jump, I want to say,
(11:08):
in the first period alone, he probably won two or
three puck battles along the wall, like just like was
was just a different player. And but we haven't seen
that really since, but we have seen it. So at
what point do you you know, like, Okay, what's the
next step with him? You know, they bring a guy
(11:30):
in that's that's a right winger, probably that's that's not
a center iceman. But you have some versatility with mc
cann and Yanni Gord. If you want to sit Maddy Vaniers,
I don't think like I said, I don't think that
you bumped hand of down when you know Winterton probably
just goes back. Whatever. Although that kind of notice that
line a little bit more against Ottawa right Linton line
(11:52):
or the or the the Mitchell season's line with Kara
car Ja made an agree to the turnover. The blue
line was harsh on the first goal that was that
was a tough one that I gave up. But those guys,
I'll give you something. On a fourth line, Matt he's
not going to be a fourth liner, right, He's going
to be a top a top six guy. You're going
to send him out. And again, if it to me,
(12:15):
it's not punishment, it's just like, let's reset this. I know,
I know there's people that got a little uptight when
you know people are making a big deal of oh,
look what's York Strands done since he came back from
being a healthy scratch, or you know, look how well
for a coffee plate if he was a healthy scratch
or Shane Wright and like, well, you know it's not empciety.
(12:36):
He's a scratch. No, he was a scratch right like,
like that's reality. It's post sports, like at some point
it's post sports, big boy stuff. And again, if they
can't get Maddie going, I don't. I just don't know
where you go because you have to get him going,
and you have to get the can going. But you
have to get him going.
Speaker 4 (12:57):
Yeah, Will Morgan's out the door here in the trade
and I think to me it's a sign of how
much was he do for a raise at the end
of this season and where was it going to come from?
Because it didn't look promising that it was going to
come from here from Seattle. But how are we going
to define the Will Morgan era from three seasons plus sei?
Speaker 3 (13:18):
If she comes true pro? Could you know? I mean
he could play, you know, in your second pair, your
third pair, kill penalties, played with an edge, played with
with with a little bit of you know, a little
bit of grit. Just you want will you want guys
like Will Borgan on your team? Uh? You know? But
(13:42):
you can do better than Will Borgan, I guess in
a sense, or you can replace him easier than maybe
you can replace other guys in the back end. MA
Heroes who has been solid this year when he's played.
You know, even last night Borgan played the fewest minutes
of any defensive hunt against Ottawa. So you know, with
with him, it's a good player. Probably not worth the money,
(14:06):
especially maybe the money moving forward when you have other
guys coming up in the system or you can play
that Josh maher in there. Yeah, but I think you know,
if you're a cracking fan, you got to get your
cap as as Forthum would say, belligerent built. Yeah, he's been.
He's been. He's been approach properly for sure.
Speaker 4 (14:23):
And we can't forget the playoffs from two years ago
where he just looked absolutely animal ish, physical against the
Colorado team where the crackhead needed that kind of a
jolt against Nathan McKinnon and crew.
Speaker 3 (14:36):
Well, he and Alexiak were the best player that in
that series, and they were they were at times defensively dominant.
You know, I think he I think he probably face
to say that that both those guys probably haven't been
as comfortable when they've been a part is when they've
been together within Alexiac. But yeah, will Borg in that
series was he was special and that's why he you know,
(14:58):
that's why he gets paid and that's like he will
get paid again. So, uh, you make a trade. You
know you're you're giving up something that you know is.
You know who and what Will Borgan is. You know
how steady is he is, you know how consistent he is.
You know what Will Borgan brings. You know who and
what he is. So the other lady, you bring back
(15:19):
the guy that is you know, you don't know what
you're getting in Coppo Coco, Like you don't know, like
is he going to be a guy that was eventually? God,
we're talking how about this Mike, he was talking about
another second overall pick right when we just spent time talking.
We're talking about the twenty nineteen second overall pick. After
we just finished all that time talking about the twenty
(15:40):
twenty one second overall pick. The guys like Coco and
Baniers are not getting you know, they weren't drafted to
be guys that are averaging point four or five or
pay five points a game. I half a point of game.
But to get a guy like Coco and say, Okay,
we're gonna take a flyer on a guy that might
have an upside, you have to get something up uh,
and in this case, it was probably if you look
(16:00):
around the roster, like Will Morgan has value, especially now
with Truba gone there. I mean, he's not true, but
he's not you know, not going to kill you let
me over. But but he's at least in a sense
of you know, he's going to play a city game
and a hard game and an edgy game for you.
So uh, you know you had to give something up.
And you know, I like to trade a lot. I
(16:22):
don't mind the draft picks at all. They got plenty
of draft picks and they got a lot of guys
in the system over the last three years. That's not
a big deal to me. That's a no brainer. So
I like to move.
Speaker 2 (16:31):
We'll see if this can jolt the crack end opening
up the road trip against.
Speaker 4 (16:34):
The Chicago Blackhawks, because Chicago was playing some pretty confident
hockey at this point, winning back to back games and
then in comeback fashion against the Washington Capitals back on
Tuesday evening. Ultimately, here's the question as far as to
keep this season on the tracks in pursuit of a
playoff spot, because again, the Crack enter below the cut line,
(16:54):
and they don't want.
Speaker 2 (16:55):
To fall further and further back again.
Speaker 4 (16:57):
So you have four games coming up, three before the
holiday break, Chicago, Vegas, Colorado, and then Vancouver coming out
of Christmas. Where's the bar set? Are you looking at
at least three wins here? Or if we're going to
put this on the table with eight points? At least
six points?
Speaker 3 (17:15):
Well I thought they needed at least six last week
or just there on the home stand, and they ended
up with three, right, So what's you just? You just
can't keep falling further and further back. I mean, they're
four back right now with Vancouver's they're five back in Vancouver.
(17:36):
Vancouver's got three games in hand on you. Your four
back Calgary. Calgary's got one game in hand on you,
and Colorado, Utah and Saint Louis fall ahead of you.
I think, I mean, I think you can live with
over this four game stretch? What would you be was it?
How was it? Four game stretch? You giving me right?
Speaker 2 (17:55):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (17:56):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (17:56):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (17:56):
Four game stretch? So three before Christmas and one coming
out out of the holiday break.
Speaker 3 (18:01):
Two one and one you could live with probably yeah,
five pointer? Okay, I think if you did that, if
you could be pretty happy and move one fifteen seventeen
win two seventeen seventeen, they come out. Then you're in
your five hundred night at that point, and you got
to get a lot better than that, but at least
you're five hundred.
Speaker 4 (18:18):
Well, nothing short here to talk about, and this at
least was not a boring Wednesday. So the Crack a
ed made the train and they're looking to get a
jolt here short term as far as this road trip
long term to stay in the hunt.
Speaker 2 (18:30):
Here for the playoff mix, Mayor, thank you so much
for your insight, my man. Keep up the great work.
By the way, on the Crack and Hockey Network.
Speaker 3 (18:37):
Side, thank Mikey talking sir.
Speaker 2 (18:42):
To me, and thank you very much. Keep up the
great work, my friend.
Speaker 4 (18:44):
On the TV side, also on these air waves from
twelve to three week days, is that we'll set the
seed here for this transaction and this deal. We'll have
more talking about it on Cracking this morning. Ian's comments here,
plus more from Jeff Baker, VP of Editorial for the
crowd more on this piece on NHL dot com slash Kracking.
They'll be along with us here for the morning podcast
(19:06):
drop ahead of the game.
Speaker 2 (19:07):
Plus we'll have more after.
Speaker 4 (19:08):
Coppocaco speaks with the media expected on Thursday ahead of
the five pm airtime for the Kraken and Chicago Blackhawks
to open the forward game road trip. Puck drop by
the Way coming a little after five thirty pm Pacific
time from United Center.
Speaker 2 (19:23):
We'll have full coverage by the Way all.
Speaker 4 (19:25):
Across the Emerald Queen Casino Kraken Audio Network. Big thank
