talk about. Mike Benton with youhere for this latest drop of Overtime.
You can cat just by the wayeach and every time for new episodes and
the Crack and Audio Network podcasted viathe iHeartRadio app. So we're down to
the round of eight across Stanley Playoffs. We'll have more to talk about with
(01:02):
that, along with Everett Fitzu andal Kiniski joining us in just a bit
as we also will dive into thecoaching search matters here along with criteria that
will certainly help guide this process youthversus experience, skill and physicality all rolled
into one ever now joining us injust a bit. First off, we
(01:23):
should also drop a props here tothe Coachella Valley Firebirds this evening. They
advanced onto the next round here forthe Calder Cup Playoffs after knocking out the
Calgary Wranglers in four games, arewinning Game four three nothing at Actor Sure
Arena, helped out by Chris Riegerwho was lights out thirty one save shutout
in net as he earned first Starof the Game honors. Shanewright by the
(01:45):
way scoring a breakaway goal, KyleFlurry and Devin Shore also hitting the score
sheet. Earlier this evening, wesaw Edmonton come back and knock off the
Vancouver Canucks for three in sudden deathovertime, while the Florida Panthers earned a
very and I mean very convincing winover the Boston Bruins to take a two
(02:06):
games to one series lead in thesecond round. As Florida cruise six'
to two in their victory at TDGardens, scoring three times in the third
period. So what surprised us andwhat hasn't surprised us? Let's jump right
in, all right, fans backtogether, Mike Benton Everett fits you,
(02:27):
Al Kaniski. As we are aboutalmost a month now, end of the
offseason, Fellas, how are you? And if I may ask, what
have we learned about ourselves here inthe first few weeks. I learned that
I am a very sore loser becauseI'm sitting here watching all these other teams
(02:47):
play hockey, and I'm like,oh, I can't be playing hockey right,
and I'm trying so hard not tonot to endlessly watch these games.
But my loves him. He's dadhockey, dad hockey, dad hockey.
So I'm like, all right, fine, little latch hockey, but I'm
not going to enjoy it. SoI'm a sore loser. I'll tell you
(03:10):
I've appreciated the physicality of the games, the gret the no holds barred mentality
of some of these games. Ithink it makes for exciting playoff hockey.
But I'll admit I've not watched agame start to finish yet. I'm close
memories from last year. I'm close. See, I've been trying to keep
(03:32):
up, and to some degree,I have been keeping up. But we've
had this conversation. We get donehockey seasons put to bed, and then
the family calls, which means thehoney dual lists and kids got to get
here, there, and everywhere.I'm not going to lie. Sometimes I've
had the phone up watching, soit has been scant attendance for me to
(03:54):
maybe I would say half attendance asfar as keeping up here with the games.
I've been trying my hardest. Andthe one thing I learned about myself
is maybe how much I push mywife's patience. Amy. I love her
when we say a certain bedtime,a certain bedtime, and I go,
wait, but just one more minutethe Canucks tied the game, or wait
(04:14):
just one more minute Colorado was downfour nothing, and it's now four to
three, and my sons have allof a sudden crowned me a hero because
yay, ten more minutes a freetime. See there, it is,
well, what do we take whatdo we take away here from these playoff
games? Something that has maybe surprisedus or something that maybe that has not
surprised us here And I'll first beginleast surprising team so far in the playoffs,
(04:42):
the least surprising team. I mean, I'm gonna go oilers. I've
said this before. I think theyas a team have the most to lose
and the most to game in theseplayoffs. I think when you're looking at
McDavid and dry Sidle over the nexttwo years eligible for extensions, there hasn't
(05:05):
been a whole lot of success inoil country in the last fifteen years just
in general. So I do thinkthat I mean this is this is an
Oilers team that has to they haveto get to a final, they have
to to win a cup over thenext you know, year or two,
(05:27):
because they're they're coming up against apretty interesting few years in terms of their
roster, in terms of what theturnover will look like. So I think
the least surprising team to me isprobably the Oilers because I expected them to
do this and and frankly, theyneed, they need to be winning these
games and they have to make itto the final. I think this is
(05:50):
kind of a final or bust yearfor them. Yeah, I'll go into
the East. I think the leastsurprising team is the Rangers, and they're
certainly playing that way through the firsttwo rounds of the playoffs. The team
that you know went out and grabbedsome personnel won. Alex Wimberg from Seattle
as well. Seems to be doingwell there. But they've come out of
(06:13):
the gate with all guns firing inthe first two rounds, and it'll be
interesting to see who is the firstteam to beat them in these playoffs.
It would have thought seven and oh, I'll tell you that much I thought
they were. I think before theplayoffs, a lot of people had Rangers
Dallas in the final, which Ithink that would be a very exciting final.
(06:36):
I think I had the Rangers definitelygoing to the Eastern Conference Finals into
the finals at Carolina Rangers in thissecond round as well, But I did
not see seven and zero them start, not the way they've started. If
no one else knew better, theywould have thought that Al is probably copying
off your homework because I'm going togo with the New York Rangers. They've
(06:59):
just to me that they're just toomuch for Carolina and they didn't trip fall
and land on the Presidence Trophy. That coaching move for Peter wavio Lette has
paid off. They've run the onethree one well, they can score well
off the one three one, andas of right now, there is nothing,
and I mean almost nothing getting onby Igor Schusterkin who has been magnificent
(07:21):
so far in this Carolina series.I can't help but think that this is
maybe only I would say halfway towhat they're going to be doing as far
as damage in the Stanley Cup playoffs. Here I will then transition to the
most surprising team in the playoffs.I'm going to go with the Vancouver Canucks
because of the Thatcher Dempko situation playingmusical chairs with goaltenders, especially in Round
(07:46):
one. Nashville gave them a handfuland they got through all of that in
Round two and opening up Game onewith a banger against the Edmonton Oilers.
They prove that they're here and theymean business. Yeah, they were great
this season. Record said so underRick talk. If the playoffs are a
different animal and a different beast, and for this team, they go where
(08:09):
Thatcher Dempko goes and maybe he's backsoon, maybe he's not, but they're
doing okay with them and here theyare already into the second round. Yeah,
I gotta go Carolina. And I'mnot saying that to to be negative
about Carolina, but when you lookat the teams that are left, it's
hard to find one that shouldn't bethere. So Carolina is probably at the
(08:31):
bottom of that list when I stockthem all up, but you know they're
they're struggling right now obviously against cabove the New York Rangers to get quality
shots on goal. But that wouldbe my answer. Yeah, I'm going
Carolina as well, because I thinkfor them, they really have done just
(08:54):
about everything right outside of special teamsplay for them, but they just can't
get the Rangers. I mean,I knew that that the Rangers are going
to be a handful. I didnot see three to zero handful. And
you remember last year when Carolina gotswept out of the playoffs, Rod Brendamore
said, you know, it didn'tfeel like a sweep. It was a
(09:18):
series in which we were, youknow, in it every single game.
This series could have gone for nothingthe other way. And I think we're
here again this year where the Hurricanesthey're not catching the breaks. It's not
like they're playing poorly. Their overtimegame the other night. I mean they
played two overtime games in this seriesalone, So they're really I think the
(09:41):
beneficiaries of bad luck on a fewsides. But again, going over on
the power play of this series isn'tgoing to help you. But I do
think that I'm very surprised they've notbeen able to get anything going against the
Rangers. But I don't think theRangers are that much better than the Hurricanes.
(10:05):
You know, I don't think thisis a three to nothing series.
I think this is a two toone two two series. But you know,
the Rangers have been getting all thebreaks. You know what's interesting too
about that series is, you know, we talked a lot on the broadcast
all year about shots on goal, shots on goal, and and this series
is interesting because Carolina's putting a lotmore shots on goal than New York is,
(10:26):
and they've talked a lot about Carolinabeing a volume shooting team versus New
York being a quality shooting team, which you know, some might argue is
is similar to Seattle over last season. I've just I've never thought about shots
on goal that way. Is Hey, if I got to pick one,
I'm probably gonna pick volume over quality. But it's certainly working for New York.
(10:48):
Well, I think too. Inthe playoffs, where you don't have
a lot of special teams play,I mean, I think I forget what
game it was, Maybe it wasthe Rangers game, the other day where
they went one for six on thepower play. I've not heard of a
team getting six power plays in aplayoff game. I mean, usually you're
(11:09):
capped at about three. Unless there'sa really egregious maybe you'll get four.
So a lot of times, youknow, to make up for the lack
of power plays, you're just throwingeverything onto the net. But you know,
I'm with you. I think,especially now when you're in a lot
of two to one games, threetwo games, I mean, you need
(11:31):
to put twenty thirty forty plus shotson net with regularity because his goalies are
dialed in, they're ready to go. They're playing on an entirely different planet
on a lot of occasions. SoI do think that there is something to
be said about the quantity over equalityin the playoffs when that calendar turns.
(11:52):
What's likely here to go seven inthis second round? Dallas, Colorado,
Boston Floorlorida or are you taking thefield m I'll go Boston, Florida.
I think those teams are just gonnaspend the seven games beating each other up,
and the last team that has apuck roll in for the winner is
(12:15):
the one that comes out of that. Because I think they can both play
that style of game. Yeah,I'll call that one going seven. Yeah,
it's it's a toss up for me. But I'm gonna I'm gonna go
Colorado Boston just because both or Dallas, because both those teams can score.
And we saw last night, right, what was it four for one,
(12:35):
four to two, and they overcamethe deficit. It's for nothing at one
point, it's for nothing. Yeyeah, there you go. It's for
nothing. So I'm gonna go ColoradoDallas. I mean, Colorado their issue
is and always has been since PatrickWaugh retired goaltending. But I do think
they have the offense to get itdone. But I think that one.
(12:58):
I can see that one going seven, and I can also see that one
going you know, four, three, five, four games, seven games.
I feel like you might have alittle bit more defense out East,
but I mean, it's it trulyis the Wild West. I think in
these playoffs. I can't help butthink Dallas and Colorado just based on the
(13:22):
number of roundhouse punches they've thrown inthe first two games, that this thing
is going to go seven games. But I will say this, Boston Florida
has got some old timey hockey going. There is some hate bruin right now
in the series. The annoying theannoying thing is I don't know if you
saw this or not, but Iwas scrolling through Twitter before we jumped on
(13:43):
here, and the league has putthose teams on notice and they're saying,
hey, we're gonna you know,we're gonna overlease the rest of the series.
And I'm like, well, waita minute, like, what are
we doing? What are we doinghere? Is playoff hockey. Now.
I'm not I'm not saying that youshould be able to two hand a guy
with your stick and take someone's headoff and you know, pull the old
(14:05):
happy Gilmore. But listen, it'splayoff hockey. I've gotten no issue ramping
up the physicality. I've gotten noissue with that at all. And I
do think that coming out and sayinglike, hey, we're going to put
you on notice, I do thinkthat takes a little bit out of it.
Now. Now I think the playersare going to be thinking about it.
(14:28):
It's an extra it's an extra elementthat they probably didn't need to think
about. Now they're going to haveto, Yeah, well you know the
other one too. I'm not changingmy answer. But the other one that
could go seven is Edmonton and Vancouverbecause from what we've seen so far we
have small sample size. But thatfirst game was a jeckle and hide from
(14:50):
first half of the game to thesecond half, and if they play the
next three or four games like that, it could push out to seven too.
I'm wondering I cannot win until thatseries gets to game three and they
go back to Edmonton. I mean, you have an all Canadian mashup.
You've got to trophy starved success starvedfranchises and cities there. I mean,
(15:16):
I think that this is an alltime series potentially brewing. I'm with you.
That wouldn't surprise me either. Yeah. Can you imagine the streets also
of Vancouver or Edmonton after if theygo game five, game six, even
game seven, boy, the wholeboy. Credit credit to the cities too,
with these watch parties that are having. I mean, my parents live
(15:39):
up in Vancouver and they're telling me, like the neighbors are saying, no,
we don't want it because it isjust a concert amount of people outside
big screen party atmosphere. Credit tothem for getting those kind of things going,
for building the game and you know, obviously Canada is an entirely different
anim Well, we saw a littlebit of that last year when the Kraken
(16:03):
when the playoffs. But man, that I'm looking forward to the next time
the Kraken make the playoffs, orin five years when this team is consistently
in the playoffs and we have thesewash parties on Seattle Center at the Armory
and we're getting two three four thousandpeople. We're selling out the watch party
(16:26):
at Climate Pledgerina seventeen thousand in thebuilding to watch the games. That's gonna
be awesome. I remember where Iwas at the end of Game seven Colorado.
You could not move inside thirty twoBar and grill. At the same
time you could not move at QueenAnne Beer Hall. And to only think
(16:48):
of how much this could grow exponentiallyjust blows my mind. I was moving
through the streets of Denver after thatone easily easily face to maneuver, and
I'll tell you that much. Dida few tap dancing moves the three sixty
right across our producers. Marcus Allen, He's from Denver. We grew up
(17:12):
an Avalanche fan. I think heis somewhat of an Avalanche fan, but
he's celebrated by Army carrying me throughthe streets of Listen, I'm a meaty
boy and he is. Also he'salso a thick one as well. Picked
me up and he had no issueArmy carrying me through the streets of Denver
(17:34):
last year when we won a gameseven. So can bring some strength,
So Marcus Allen can left ever itfits you, who's going to lift the
kraken? Now behind this bench, that's a big question. We're getting there,
We're getting there, but when weget there still the big question is
who knows? Because the dust isnow settled here on Dave Haxtall on the
(17:56):
dismissal. So what are you moreconvinced of as of right now? They're
going to lean toward experience or moretowarding up and comer. The only comment
I wanted to make is, youknow, we've we've probably seen a lot
of the same names floating around.I think they've got to find someone that
can get these young players to theNHL level quickly, and whether that's experience
(18:17):
or youth, I would probably leantowards experience because you've probably done that successfully
before. But there's something to besaid about a younger coach as well that
relates to the players. And Idon't think that's where this franchise is is
looking for a coach that can relate. I think you're looking for someone that
can take these saplings of players andgrow them into oak trees. You need
(18:38):
a gardener, need skilled gardener,my scaled hockey gardener. Uh. You
know I I love everything you saidthere. Al, I'm going to go
on the more experienced side of thingsbecause you're new franchise. Because as you're
still new, you're still trying toestablish a culture here and you know,
(19:03):
not taking anything away from Dave Hackxtall, but you now want to take that
next step forward, and I thinkyou're you're looking for. If I'm Rod
Francis, I'm looking for a coachwho's been here before, who's taken teams
to playoffs, who've had success withyounger and experienced teams. I mean,
(19:23):
you don't need to go out thereand and and go get a guy just
because they know how to work withyoung players. I do think there is
something to say about relating to guys, but I do think the experience is
the one thing. And a coachwho has won, who has gone to
playoffs before, who has one playoffseries before? And then I also think
(19:48):
too, culture is going to bea really big thing for this next coach.
I mean, Dave Hackstall talks alot about wanting to try and bring
the fun back in into into hockey, into the locker room, and I
think, while it might not beat the top of the list, I
do think you're going to need somewhatof a personality in that chair. I
(20:08):
think you're gonna need someone who isgood with the media and who can who
can galvanize a fan base, galvanizeyour players obviously, and and give that
that belief and that hope of success. See. I'm totally behind an up
and comer. I totally understand thevalue of an up and comer, But
(20:30):
for for this situation and for thistype of thing going on here, for
this offseason, I can't help butthink they do nothing but lean into experience.
It's an organization in justice, thirdyear street credit matters. They need
that by bringing in somebody who knowshow to win to get into the playoffs,
or maybe even Everett, as yousaid, win a Stanley Cup.
(20:52):
When you have a head coach,I can take us ring off and slap
that thing right down on the tablein the middle of the room. Guys
understand what it takes to win andhow to get there. They know where
their leader is been. It's goingto help with the pie of selling the
sport here into a critical time thatwe are entering right now. So then
(21:15):
I lean into that here with threenames maybe that you're interested in, that
have been going around. Tom McClellanreportedly has been in town already and already
had talks with Ron Francis. Ilike McLellan knowing how to upgrade teams.
Plus we often hear of how histough love approach and communications skills often blend.
(21:37):
I like Rod Brendamore three straight fiftywin seasons. And this conversation will
continue until this coaching contract extension actuallyhappens. It has not yet, and
who knows what's going to happen hereif the Rangers sweep Carolina, because that
could totally change the calculus as comparedto what we've heard about. Roughly a
week ago, when the two sides, Rob Brenda Moore management came together and
(22:03):
said all is cal him right now, but there is still no contract extension.
I also like Craig Baruby as well. For the culture standpoint. For
the Stanley Cup aspect, he's gota ring. Vince Dunn and Jaden Schwartz
played for him. They have thathow much they love playing for Craig Barruby.
Those are three names maybe in theexperience bucket I'm looking at right now.
(22:26):
I like the I like the ideaof Craig Ruby because I think you
get elements of both experience and relatableto the players. Having been a player
obviously, I like. I likelike the toughness in his game. I
think that probably comes out in hiscoaching a little bit. So I think
he's got a few different elements thatcould apply. I'll throw in a wild
(22:48):
card and I'll throw Joel Quinville outthere. I know there's a bit of
a uh, you know, negativebackground there with what happened with the Chicago
Blackhawks. I did hear this weekthat Kyle Beaches in support of him coming
back to the NHL, which whichis a good sign. There's no reason
why he shouldn't be talked to.Whether or not he would fit into this
organization, I don't know, butit's it should be a name that's at
(23:11):
least considered. You know, Ilike Craig Bruby for all the reasons that
you just said, you know, because he's won recently. He knows how
to get the most out of hisplayers. By and large, everyone that
you talk to, I feel thatthey'll tell you that they respect him,
they enjoy playing for him. Ithink Rod Brandamore gives you a nice mix
(23:36):
of both of those things. Ithink he gives you a mix of success.
Although he's not won a Stanley Cupthree straight fifty wins seasons, he's
taken a team that largely has beengrown from within, built from the draft,
a lot of that, starting withRon Francis and taking a lot of
their players to where they are rightnow. Well, but also to I
(24:00):
mean he's also younger. I meanhe won a Cup and oh six with
Carolina, So a lot of today'splayers probably grew up watching him play.
They probably remember where they were andand you know, fifth grade in or
however role, they were watching himraise the Stanley Cup. So I do
think that, you know, therecan be coaches that are all right,
(24:23):
you know, you've never played thisgame, or you you were a star
back in the eighties. You know, go away old man, right,
But I feel like with the RodBrenda Moore, he's close enough to this
generation of player where a lot ofhis routines, a lot of his what
he played, how he played isvery relatable to the way that I think
(24:45):
players play these days. So Ido like Rod in that category. You
know, the contract thing is veryinteresting because depending on which way the wind
blows, either he is signed inCarolina or he's not signed in Carolina,
they're gonna get something done. They'renot gonna get something done. So I
(25:06):
I, you know, wait tilltomorrow. It'll be another thing. But
I mean, I'm with you,Mike, until it is, until it
is signed, sealed, delivered. He's, as far as I'm concerned,
a free agent after the end ofthe year. So I think that would
be a good, uh good pick. But again, Ron, as as
we know, and as I thinka lot of folks are starting to realize,
(25:27):
Ron Francis is a one of themost well connected and well respected men
in in our league. So alot of people would jump at the opportunity
to be a part of something thathe's building. And then also so and
I say that to say he's gonnahave a ton of candidates. I mean,
(25:48):
I think of of the of theopenings Seattle, Ottawa. I don't
know if Toronto Now is going tokeep Jim Hiller Toronto Now New Jersey.
I will say I think this hasto be a pretty attractive opening for a
variety of reasons. So I don'tthink the Kraken are gonna get stuck with
their quote unquote last choice. Andalso too, Ron is one of those
(26:11):
folks who play things extremely close tothe vest. Before Dave Hastall was hired,
we all thought Rick Tockett was gonnabe the head coach, and then
you know, you find out thenight before the morning of oh it's Dave
Hackstall. So I don't think we'regonna find out until it's time for us
to find out. But I dothink there's gonna be no shortage of candidates,
(26:33):
very good qualified candidates for Ron.And who's the one guy who's most
connected to Ron Francis It's Rod BrendanMoore. And now I'll let you take
the stage here with this. Ifthere was one coach, I think who
is a model of a modern coachwhere you can fit diplomacy and accountability in
the I Rock solid balance. That'sBrenda Moore where it makes a great fit
(26:57):
likely to orchestrate to turn around herefor this team beginning this next season.
Yeah. My only concern with RodBrindanmoor's. First of all, I agree
with everything Fitz said in that Ithink he has a lot of the same
attributes that Craig Bruby brings to thetable. The difference is, I think
Rod Brendamore is rooted in Carolina somuch more than that Craig Bruby is.
(27:18):
So can Ron upward him. Ifthere's somebody that can, it's probably Ron.
Yeah, you know they've got thatrelationship, they've got that background,
but you know that remains to beseen. It's a good question here as
far as where they're going to goand very lightly again, Brenda Moore could
be extended and the crack and willhave to look elsewhere. But that is
still very much a topic of conversationhere with the playoffs still going on and
(27:41):
right now no contract extension here forBrenda Moore in place among the other potential
candidates here. Ken, thank youenough, you're for doing this before we
get out of here. Next bigthing on the offseason agenda for you around
the house. Go, I haveto paint some tile around my fire place.
You're getting after it like you're amister green thumb. Before this conversation,
(28:03):
also, yeah, yeah, Igot to roll the up and get
some things done here. I cutthe grass today. I have to.
We've got my mom's coming at theend of the month, Mama. Yeah,
my in laws are coming right afterthat. Both my sister in laws,
actually all three of my sister inlaws are coming. Uh, so
(28:26):
I have to get the guest roomsare kind of a disaster. That's kind
of been Everett's dumping ground. SoShelley just said, I'm not gonna put
a hard time on it, justbefore they get here, cleaner, you
know what up And I was like, yes, ma'am, I will do
it the cleaning thing for me acouple of hours before they get here or
(28:48):
yeah, oh yeah. She didn'tsay like it doesn't have to be done
today, like you know, hey, we're at the airport. Perfect.
I'm rather get that guests room cleanedup. Yeah, see seeing four hours
think, yes, they're coming fromJersey, so I got a long time.
Enough heads up, now you haveenough of heads up, heads up?
Ye see clean cleaning thing. Thecleaning thing for me is top priority
(29:14):
here. And I've got grass outsidethat has been cutting about maybe two weeks.
It's getting close to us, openlength rough out there right now.
It is laughing at me. Itis taunting me. So I've got to
get after that. And plus Iwas thinking about, oh, how lovely
it would be to just throw acouple of steaks or even grilled chicken in
the barbecue. And all of asudden, Number one, I had a
(29:37):
part of my gas grill where thepilot light connects to different parts of it
break in two. They got tofix that. And then secondly, I
have a vision grill that's kind oflike a big green Egg knockoff. And
I found out I'm out of charcoal. Punch me right in the gut.
Off I go here by hook orby crook. I will get grilling here
(30:00):
soon. It will be soon.So that's going down. Don't sleep on
goats. Mighty be for your backyardand not grass. I got a neighbor
with a couple of goats, andthey clean up really well. If you
got to see before there were lawnmowers, it was all done naturally. You
can rent them. You can goat. We are taking nature and just cycling
(30:21):
it back through the natural way. There you go. I might just do
that because I want to see. That just sounds My curiosity has been peaked.
I might go get it. Imight rent a goat and just let
them lose. And friends, ifyou want to follow whatever it FETs you,
if you want to follow ever itfits you on Instagram, very likely
if this happens, he'll provide youwith free play by play of the ghost
(30:44):
chewing up the grass Instagram Live.Just follow him at the voice fits you.
Oh yeah, I play by playof goats cutting grass. This is
how we're resorting here to the offseason, guys saying we'll do this again
here soon. But thanks again forus swinging in here for a little bit.
Man, I appreciate you. Thankyou always a pleasure. We'll talk
