Speaker 1 (00:00):
And the Cracking power play.
Speaker 2 (00:02):
Look, this is the Kraking Postgame Show, brought to you
by Toyota of Olympia. Now for an in depth look
at your Kraken Hockey. It's the post game on the
Global Credit Union Kraken Audio Network.
Speaker 1 (00:17):
For the final times and night.
Speaker 3 (00:18):
Welcome back inside a climbing pledge arena alongside al Kiniski.
I am eward fits you two to one Cracking fall
in the shootout to Columbus, and I don't know about you, partner,
but I don't know too many one to one games
that were as exciting as this one here. It was
a goaltending battle. Jet Greaves one better than Matt Murray.
(00:40):
Second game in a row. Matt Murray has been all
but unbeatable and actually only one better in the shootout.
I mean, only one goal allowed for Matt Murray here tonight.
But Kracking could not come away with the extra point.
Speaker 4 (00:53):
No, they couldn't. And you know, the only goal that
he gave up in regulation was a five to one
three goal that he got forty nine and a half
percent of the shot in the.
Speaker 1 (01:02):
After he sold out and the goal crease and all
of it.
Speaker 4 (01:04):
Yeah, I mean that was after a sequence of saves
and you had to dive across to try and get
that back door open net save and he was inches
away from making the highlight reel on ESPN.
Speaker 3 (01:15):
So after this one partner, I mean again, I think defensively,
you know what this team is about. Do you notice
anything offensively? Are you frustrated? What more can the crack
and do? It's not like they're getting they're not getting opportunity.
That's not like they're not getting good looks. They've got
the good personnel in the eyes. But for whatever reason,
in the last two nights, they've run into some real
hot goaltenders.
Speaker 1 (01:35):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (01:35):
I mean it's like creating an attributes in a video game.
If you could turn up an attribute, what would it be?
I would probably turn up the power play a little bit,
you know, zero for two tonight, oh for five over
the last two games. And I and I think that
that that sniper. You're just missing that sniper. You saw
that with Marchenko there on the Yeah, on the shootout,
he's a sniper. And that's why he put his team
(01:57):
on the board. Fortunately he told them and tied it
up out for that. It was Chardie Cole that got
the winning goal. But you know you need those snipers
on your team, and right now I think the closest
thing to a sniper is Jared McCann. He's out of
the lineup.
Speaker 3 (02:08):
I was about to say he's still no word on
Jared mccannon has been out for a few weeks now,
and I think if you're Seattle, you're wondering a when
is he coming back? But also Freddie Gadreau, who is
really good in the shootout and that could have been
an area for him.
Speaker 1 (02:21):
Still no word on Joey Decord.
Speaker 3 (02:23):
We're hoping as this week progresses, with Winnipeg coming in
here Thursday, San Jose on Saturday, you get some type
of word on those three. I will say Freddie Gadroaux
this morning was seen skating in practice, active participant in
morning skate with a non contact jersey. So typically in
that situation, players usually like to get four days of
(02:44):
practice work in. Would not surprise me one bit to
see him on the road trip next week and maybe
he gets back in the lineup in either Detroit, Chicago,
Pittsburgh or on Long Island next week.
Speaker 1 (02:56):
But crack and fall.
Speaker 3 (02:57):
You're two to one to the Columbus Blue Jackets in
a shootout. Let's pause for a station identification on the
Global Credit Union in Cracking Audio Network two one Jackets
(03:17):
over Seattle, al over to you to close this out.
Speaker 4 (03:19):
Yeah, Matt Murray again, what best game I've seen him
play so far this season. Like I said, only goal
given up was on the five to one three. The
power play has got to get a little bit better.
Oh for to tonight over five over the last two
game games. Penalties that's another attribute to me turned down
a little bit. Crackett had four minors tonight, Columbus Blue
Jackets with two. But I want to highlight a couple
(03:40):
of things as well. Ben Myers, fantastic game for him tonight.
One assist, plus one, four shots on goal two hits
best game I've seen him play. And I think he
led that fourth line tonight. Which is my last takeaway
is the fourth line had an excellent game tonight. I
appreciate and respect all the time they were given on
the ice to do their work. Three stars brought to
(04:00):
you by Mamakay. Third starting to night was Ryan Winterton
from that fourth line. He had a goal and was
plus one. Second star goes to Cracking goaltender Matt Murray.
He stopped thirty four of thirty five and the first
star goes to Charitie Coil of the Columbus Bluejackets, who
had the winning goal in the shootout.
Speaker 3 (04:17):
I think Mamakay misses us being back out east because
those three stars come in seven o'clock. Mamakay can get
the cribbage game ready to go, but now Mamakay's falling asleep,
ready to go to bed. That'll do it for us
here in the booth, Mike Benton on the course light
landing section twenty set to take you the rest of
the way, mikey Bee down to you.
Speaker 5 (04:39):
A lot to talk about here for this evening, guys,
great call, thank you very much once again. And it's
one of those by the finest of Margins type of games,
Matt Murray Zalkiniski said, maybe his best game yet so far. Unfortunately,
no offense or not much to back him up here
with the Kraken found life hard to come buy in
big spots. Jack Grieves down the other way, helping lead
the way for an emotion win for Columbus in the
(05:01):
shootout as they finished back to back and also battling
illness as well, so the Cracking get a point out
of it, but a tough way to drop this one
and a shootout to one your final score to open
the homestand and climbate pledge arena, and we have a
lot more to cover. A Zalkoniski joining us later on
here this evening, we have highlights coming your way, plus
our scores, more reaction from downstairs, and much more Texas

right now four nine four, five one. The KJR text
line is open and give us your instant takeaway from
this evening's game in a two to one shootout loss
with the Crack into the Columbus Blue Jackets again four
nine four or five to one on the KJR text

Globo Credit you didon. Would like to take a moment
here to thank all active duty military and veterans for
their service and sacrifice. For your dedication to keeping this
country safe. We salute you, Mike Betton again with you
back by the course Light landing in section twenty here
for a game that the crack At once again gave
you what you could ask for, battling all the way
(08:13):
to the end, keeping matters tight, but unfortunately Columbus gets
the last say this evening in a shootout the eventful
goal to Charlie Coyle to wrap it up as a
crack and fall two to one here in a shootout
to the Columbus Blue Jackets, finding a way to get
a point out of this one in the opener of
this homestand and the crack and move, and their record
is seven four and five. They have nineteen points in Columbus,
(08:37):
who midtally ends their set of back to back games,
also battling illness throughout much their dressing room with a
pretty emotional lift. Their win improves them to eight seven
and one. They have seventeen points ending their five game
road trip. The Kraken record now five to one and
three against the Blue Jackets head to head and now
four or other three to zero and two all time
(08:58):
here at Climbing Plied Arena. Time now for the highlights
in this seetle Kraken drive to the net scoring recap
has brought to you. But the all new Chevvy Tracks
now bigger and Boulder tracks is the perfect assist for
all of life's adventures well for much of this season.
Early on, a big question could the Kraken find a
way to jump start their game early to get out
(09:20):
of the first period here with the lead. Well, they
made a big push in that direction a little past
the sixteen minute mark, courtesy of a line that was
giving Columbus a business nearly all night long.
Speaker 3 (09:33):
Eight seven shots Cracket lead there. Ben Myers gets lost
for winter ten.
Speaker 11 (09:37):
Stop Winter is coming. Ryan winter Ten gets it started
here in Seattle Free.
Speaker 12 (09:52):
Seventeen to play in the first one nothing cracking.
Speaker 4 (09:56):
Well, I just talked about how much I like this
fourth line combination. Right now the act. You get a
big safe by Matt Murray, the other end goes to
Fords line. They go to work. Ben Myers picking that
fuck up top of the circles. He's got a lad
in the netlik you did earlier. He sells the shot
and at the last second backhand over to Winderton. One
timer pass Graves one nufing cracking.
Speaker 5 (10:16):
That would be an omen Ben Myers, Ty Cartier and
Ryan Winterton putting continuous pressure on Columbus nearly all night long,
and that goal got the Cracking out to a one
nothing lead at sixteen forty three a period one. Winterton's
now scored, by the way and back to back home games.
That's his second of the season, Ben Myers, Jamie Alexiak
with the assists. And to give you the indication as
(10:39):
far as how much this line shut up this evening
for them on the ice tonight at five on five,
they had in hand thirteen shot attempts for their side
at five on five just five against and in shot
quality five on five. Get a load of this as
far as this big number, ninety four percent of the
share they controlled those metrics courtesy stat Trick. Whenever they
(11:01):
showed up, they made something happen, and Ryan Winterton got
the Cracking out to a one nothing lead in the
first period. The Kraken exit team period one by that
same score, on top of Columbus. A few chances early
in period two to expand the lead, though went by
the wayside, and Columbus with their chance after successive penalties
(11:21):
to Ellie Tolnan for tripping at sixteen forty six and
then Ryan lind Grin for cross checking at seventeen forty
a period two on a play at the net with
the Blue Jackets going to a five on three power play,
and that would give Adam Fantilly a one to one
tie for his fourth goal of the season. Coming at
eighteen twenty two Carill Marchenko and Sean Monahan with the
(11:45):
assists so close for Matt Murray, who nearly made a
big save with a crack and penalty kill scrambling, but
Fan Tilly put it right off the glove of Murray
in a game of inches, and that tied things up
at one, a brand new game effectively heading into period three.
The crack announce shot by Columbus also eleven to five
in that third period, and trying their hand in overtime,
(12:07):
but nothing coming. Probably the best look of ot Jordan
Everley between the circles. Jet Greaves made the save, the
only shot the crack and hat on net and turn
the link gave up one as well to Columbus. Little
foreshadowing will have that coming your way in a bit.
But right down to the shootouts into the final round,
it was up to Charlie Coyle right hand at Charlie
(12:28):
Coyle waits for the signal, Coil picks up the puck.
Speaker 3 (12:34):
He'll bring it near side, Coil into the circle back
to the Hashbugs.
Speaker 12 (12:38):
Row slots shot off the bar, He scores and the
Columbus Blue Jackets take the extra point in the shootout
final to one.
Speaker 5 (12:49):
It was indeed a battle of goaltending here for this evening,
asked Charlie Coyle, giving the Blue Jackets an emotional lift
all things considered, finale of the road trip back to back,
A lot of illness going through their dressing room, but
they found a way and the crack and having to
settle for a point unfortunately, but despite the great effort
that Matt Murray had a net here for this evening.
Two one your final in a shootout Columbus over the
(13:12):
Kraken on a night here with a crack, and also
you think what could they have done with Jared McCann
still out, Freddie Gudreau still out as well, and you're
talking about potentially a combination of around forty forty five
to fifty goals there between the two. The Kraken certainly
unfortunately feeling those effects here for this evening as they
take one point out of this one to open this
(13:33):
homestand the final shots on net thirty four to twenty
three in favor of Columbus Special teams, a big difference
here in this one. The Blue Jackets go one to
four on the power play, the Kracking go zero of
two and the win and net to Jet Greaves. Playing
in his second game in his many nights, he had
a twenty two save effort. Matt Murray, who deserved plenty
(13:54):
of applause here for his effort. This evening he turned
into a thirty three save effort, good enough for second
Star honors Winner ten Your third star, Murray, your second star,
Charlie Coyle, You're first star this evening. The Kracking falling
to zero and two. By the way, in shootouts for
this year, Columbus is now two and zero. That's again
your final Blue Jackets two and the crack at one time.

knocked down save Marteco, Ben Telly shot off the glove
of Matt.
Speaker 1 (14:55):
Murray and they score.
Speaker 3 (14:58):
Matt Murray two more inches from a highlight reel SportsCenter
save it goes off the end of his glove and
the Jackets on the power play tie.
Speaker 5 (15:14):
The game had a goal apiece, and too bad for
Matt Murray because a couple of goals that he let in.
It was a matter of a game of innhows you
think back to the Tyler Sagan goal against Dallas, so
close Murray was topping it with his right toe and
then reaching out with his glove on Fan Tilly's wide
open shot. Was so close, but Columbus turning in a
(15:34):
power play goal and that tide matters up right before
the second period horn to change the tone of this game,
and the Cracking unfortunately couldn't cash in on their power play,
which certainly made this one a toe or of nose
to nose race all the way to the finish line.
Here as that was moment number one, then to ot
Matt Murray doing everything he can to keep the Cracking alive.
Speaker 1 (15:58):
In overtime, Mark Schenko through center, He's got Fan Tilly.
Speaker 3 (16:06):
Fan Tilly gets by back hand bick same.
Speaker 1 (16:10):
By Matt Murray.
Speaker 11 (16:12):
He goes down and stones Fan Tilly's backhead.
Speaker 5 (16:17):
Biggest save of the night for Matt Murray, the only
shot he faced in overtime, brought the fans out of
their seats here at Climb the Pledge Arena and certainly
worthy of second Star honors. Matt Murray tonight in the
shootout loss, turning in a thirty three save effort that

We're back at Climbing Pledge Arena. Glad you're still hanging
out with us here for the night. Talking cracking gonna
take you to getting pretty close to the top of
the hour as we're gonna get to your reaction and
just a bit the crack and fall two to one
in a shootout of the Columbus Blue Jackets to open
this homestand and depending upon where you're thinking where this
team is going from this evening, there are two ways
(34:31):
to look at it. How much defensively did they impress
you versus how much were you concerned as far as
the offense here for tonight four nine four or five
to one Texas right now in the kJ R text
line again four nine four or five one, the only
cracking goal going to Ryan Winterton at sixteen forty three
uh period one and the cracking where this has been
a pretty hard thing to come by early this season.
(34:54):
Get out of period one with a one nothing lead
and a chance to build their game. Unfortunately that extra
they couldn't find it, and Columbus found a way to
cash in, tying things up in the five on three
late in period two, and then these two teams battling
right down to the wire, eventually ending it in a shootout.
As we say often it is a skills competition and
(35:16):
oftentimes a toss up. Charlie Coyle had the final say
in this one with the shootouts winning goal, And when
you think about how Columbus is reacting potentially end a
back to back the flu bug going in them, it's
a pretty emotional win. And the cracking nown trying to
regroup ahead of Thursday now is they will take on
the Winnipeg Jets again, text us right now four nine four,
(35:37):
five to one. On the KJR textlim we're gonna get
to more reaction, expecting that downstairs momentarily here back at
climbing Pledgerina al Kiniski joining us right now without further ado.
And this evening, I think out when you consider twenty
three shots on that Columbus takes thirty four, they were
kind of inn empty the tank scenario here based on
(35:59):
many factors, but for the Kraken you look at, I think,
how impressive again to keep an opponent tied up to
just one goal, nothing in five on five, but offensively
that extra gear has just been missing recently.
Speaker 4 (36:12):
Yeah, I mean to keep this Columbus Blue Jackets team
to one goal, I think I give a lot of
that credit to Matt Murray. Came up with some big saves,
some big sequences of saves where it wasn't just the
initial one, but second and third thirds after that getting
out shot in the third period, the cracking were twelve
to six. You know, when you're when you're sitting tied
at one against the team that's playing in their second
(36:33):
of a back to back, you'd think the opposite would
be true. Unfortunately, the Columbus doubling up on shots on
goal in that third period. I really think what's missing
is is a sniper. You know, you saw that in
the shootout with kill Mar Marchenko on the on the
goal that he scored. He's an elite sniper. You need
that guy on your lineup that you can feed pucks two,
(36:55):
five on five power play cracking. We're zero for two
on the power play tonight, oh for five over the
past two games. I think that factors into it as well.
Is that sniper Jared mccannon. Maybe, but he's not in
the lineup right now.
Speaker 5 (37:07):
And not only that, but also Freddie Gudreau is still missing.
And it's not just a shootout goal that we saw
back in preseason play that gives the indication of what
he can do. But he's consistently a guy who can
push twenty goals. So when you think about it, mccam
between twenty five to thirty, that's potentially forty forty five
to fifty goals combined, you're missing out of your lineup.
(37:27):
Not to make excuses here, but this is what the
krack and are dealing with. As far as the hand
that they have been dealt over the last few weeks.
Speaker 4 (37:35):
Well, and again you're playing you're playing a team that's
playing their second of a back to back, so you
should have the upper hand. And you're you're you're playing
a team that's at the bottom of their division in
the Metropolitan Division. Again, there are no easy games in NHL.
I'm not suggesting that, but a team that's at the
bottom of their division and they're second of a back
to back, you should be able to outplay. I think
it was a missed opportunity not to get both points
(37:56):
here tonight.
Speaker 5 (37:57):
All right, we're gonna get to Matt Murray in just
a little bit with his reaction, and we'll touch more
on this. As far as the goaltending picture, four nine
four or five to one, let's hear from you, folks,
what's your instant takeaway here from this game. Are you
encouraged by again keeping a team held to just one
goal for tonight or how concerning is that? As far
as the lack of offense that has been coming recently, again,
(38:19):
four nine four or five to one Texas Right now
on the KJR tech line, Matt Murray waiting right around
the corner and this evening when you put up thirty
three saves on thirty four shots. Yeah, he's still looking
for his first win right now in a crack in Jersey.
But the bigger picture of this, we don't know how
long Joey to Cord is going to be out of
(38:39):
the lineup. Heading into this season, that was maybe the
one guy, the one lynch pin, that you thought you
could rely on to give this team a puncher's chance
here to stay in this playoff race and hang around
and be competitive. Well he's out of the picture right
now for how long we don't know, But this was
a very very encouraging sign, not just this evening here,
(39:00):
the last two games also for Matt Murray.
Speaker 4 (39:02):
Well, I think coach Lane Lambert's structure obviously a big
part of that structure is goaltending, and you're right about
Joey Decord playing a big role in that structure. But
the fact that that that structure still exists when Joey
Decord is out of the lineup. And then you got
Matt Murray playing a fantastic game. No surprise, it was
a very fairly low event game tonight, and that it
(39:22):
was one to one through three periods of hockey. And
you know, Fitz and I were talking about this off air.
It you just got to get it used to these
kind of games. Two to two games, one to one games,
three to two, late late and third periods. I don't
think you're going to see a lot of games where
it's five and six goals scored for the Krack. And
now that doesn't mean they're a bad hockey team. It
just means that their structure is a defense first mentality
(39:45):
taking away. How many breakaways do you see tonight? None
from either team? Right, And that's because the Kracking don't
cheat to try and get me already on man rushes also, right,
So the Kracking don't cheat to get out of their
own zone looking for a breakaway, but they also don't
give up kaway's going the other way as well, which
makes it easier on their goaltenders. So that's the kind
of structure that this team plays, which is why you
(40:06):
see a low event to scoring game.
Speaker 5 (40:07):
Matt Murray was second star of this evening with a
thirty three save effort. If the Crack had won this game,
he would have been far, away, far and away first
star here for this evening's game downstairs, he is right
now talking with the media, and here's Matt Murray and
his reaction after the crack and fell to one of
the Blue Jackets in a shootout, like you.
Speaker 21 (40:24):
Were on from the get go, no warm up and
needed tonight, no res. I had to feel compared to
some other games where you haven't had a chance to play.
Speaker 4 (40:33):
For a while.
Speaker 22 (40:34):
Yeah, I think, you know, I was thankful to get
in there and get the start for one, and I
feel like, you know, I've been feeling a little bit
better each and every time, and they've been out there.
That's three starts now, I think I felt I felt
better in each and every one, So trending in the
right direction. Just got to make an extra save there
tonight and goes the other way. But you know, I
(40:56):
thought the team played really well once again, doubted hard
and could have gone either way.
Speaker 10 (40:59):
There's right.
Speaker 21 (41:01):
There was a part midway through the game where Columbus
it seemed like they were a little fatigue, but then
they started coming on like strong in this in the
second half.
Speaker 1 (41:08):
What were you seeing.
Speaker 22 (41:09):
From the five on three there helped them a lot, obviously,
that was that was a turning point. You know, they
make a nice play through the scene there and almost
had it, got it, got a good chunk of it,
but they were able to get one there. And when
you get one on the five on three before the
first time of the expiers and then you still you're
still cooking on the on the power play for a
little bit, you know that that throws us off of
(41:31):
our rhythm and kind of gives them some momentum. So
I thought, that's that's what happened a little bit, and
then we took it back I thought started the third
So it was it was, you know, a bit of
back and forth in terms of momentum that game.
Speaker 18 (41:42):
They had some young guys over there with quite a
bit of skill. What's kind of the challenge and trying
to keeping them them in check with Marchenko and Fantilly
and such.
Speaker 22 (41:49):
Yeah, really quick skilled guys. Mark Chenko's a he's a playmaker,
and they got that. That huge guy in front of
them that too, and made it really hard on me,
especially on the power plays. I couldn't see anything out there.
I'm sorry, I don't know how to pronounce his name properly,
the Russian guy, I think, but he was. He's so
(42:09):
good at screening too. He's always in the right position,
and he makes you know that that makes a you know,
a lot tougher even just to see the pocket you're battling,
a lot harders to see the puck. So yeah, they
got they got a good team over there, a lot
of skill and a lot of grit.
Speaker 4 (42:24):
What was it for you to to make your first
start here at home too? Yeah?
Speaker 22 (42:27):
Yeah, I was thankful to get in there, and like
I said earlier, I think that was that was probably
the best I felt so far. And I think We're
treading in the right direction here, so I'm just looking
to keep that going well.
Speaker 5 (42:39):
Matt Murray again proven that he's kept the cracking in
games now twice in a row, and this could be
a viable option here behind Joey the cord for how
long he's out we don't know yet here, but Murray
tonight a terrific effort, thirty three saves on thirty four
shots despite the crack and only getting one goal in
a two to one shootout last year to the Blue Jackets.
Mike Betton al Kaniski with you, I'm going to sum
(43:01):
up the reaction I have been getting on Twitter or
next here for the offense. Basically as it's because a
lot of it is pouring in right now with some
concerns about this offense. But we had one here from
the handle of Wiz Graham just suggests it maybe the
team's got a little to no confidence here offensively here
for tonight. And I think when you look at and
how you can approach this here with no Gadrow, no
(43:24):
McCann and depending upon what's out there, if you can
get down the road for a bit of a tweak
as far as a transaction, the question bears, how can
you fix this internally?
Speaker 1 (43:34):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (43:34):
I mean I think it's you're looking at film after
each game if I you know, if I'm madd Eveniers,
I'm probably looking at film saying, hey, I had two
three four shot attempts tonight that got deflected. How could
I get into a situation a shooting lane where I
can get that shot off clean rather than get it deflected.
And lots of times that's the difference between getting a
good shot on goal or maybe even scoring a goal
(43:56):
and having a puck deflected. It's that quick release, and
you know it's difficult, it's difficult to get a shot
off that quickly, but that sometimes is the difference. I
think it's you know, looking at rebound situations where where
were there rebounds where maybe you weren't in the right
position to get that secondary opportunity. Those are some of
the things you gotta look at to say I'm gonna
(44:16):
I'm gonna play that differently next game.
Speaker 5 (44:18):
Ben Meyers tonight, we'll talk about his line. They were
flying all night long. He led the team with four
shans on net here Jordan Everley had three. Shane right
by the way, he had three. But is there one
line or one player that you're looking at here and
thinking that you know, he's maybe thinking internally, I gotta
give more. I know I can give more. He may
(44:39):
be snaked it because again, I mean you're looking at
close games. But the way that this team has been,
you know, built and constructed, you know there are players
who can be pitching in that it's kind of maybe
surprising that things have kind of gone quiet.
Speaker 4 (44:50):
Yeah, I mean, Shane Wright played on the wing tonight.
I can't remember the last time you played on the wing,
So you know that tends to be an easier role.
But it doesn't matter if it's easier if you're not
comfortable or used to playing in that position. It's it's
different than what you're used to. He was on that
line with Cotton in the middle and Tolvenan on the wing,
so not giving him an excuse, but you know, your
your line gets shifted a little bit there. You've got
(45:11):
to adjust to playing that new position defensively.
Speaker 5 (45:15):
Tonight it was Berkeley Catton in the middle, Shane right
on the right wing, Ellie Toulvenen as well on the
left wing, and a tough night here for Tolvenen. No
shot on net, but it also had five shot attempts
as well, so you know what you have to do
with them and shoot the puck, shoot the puck and
shoot it some more. Something's gonna go in, or it's
gonna go take a weird bounce off of him and
(45:37):
find his way to the back of the net and
maybe off he goes from there. But I talked with
Shane right this morning and he said that maybe besides
one time playing right wing last year, he can't recall
the last time he ever played wing. So it is
quite the adjustment, and you know you're not responsible so
much defensively as you would be, say, playing center, but
(45:58):
it frees you up now for more chances here to
shoot the puck, and this evening he had three shots
on nets.
Speaker 4 (46:02):
Well, And what I like about that line too, is
is that you know, when I've coached in the past,
you can't put three playmakers together on a line just
often doesn't work. You need somebody that's gonna go into
the corners and get pucks, somebody that's willing to play
the front of the net, someone that's got a one timer.
There's your Ellie Tolvenen. You need that playmaker. I think
Berkeley Catton's a playmaker. I think Shane Wright is a
combination of a playmaker and a shooter. But you've got
(46:25):
a good balance of those skills there on that line.
It's just they haven't played together that long. There's been
a lot of tweaking in the lines over the last
few games. So I would leave that one alone for
a couple more games and see how it immatures.
Speaker 5 (46:36):
How about Brandon Montour this evening, nine shots for the night,
two shots on net. I thought he had that wind
up that that that big slab shot in period too.
They had a great chance to go in, but unfortunately
it didn't.
Speaker 4 (46:48):
Monty's never seen a puck that he doesn't want to
put on net. Doesn't matter where he is on the ice,
and you know that's part of it. Obviously he has
a shooter's mentality, but he also loves jumping into the
offense as well. So if he gets to go on
a rush and could be the first guy going harder
than net, he doesn't care if he if he gets
a shot, you know, three feet away from the goal,
you're thirty feet feet away from the goal. He doesn't care.
He's putting it on net.
Speaker 5 (47:08):
Brandon Montour also hit a post in that second period.
The Cracking were so close Sam's Columbus in their own
zone for what felt like an eternity, and I thought,
if you can bury one right there, that really puts
them behind the eight ball.
Speaker 4 (47:21):
Yeah, And I thought that that was probably one of
the points in the game where the Kracking were buzzing
the offensive end. They were able to keep Columbus bottled
up on their end, you know, running around like Toddler's
looking for bubbles at a birthday party. You've got to
be able to get sustained offensive time in those situations
because that's what breaks down defensive defensive structures. That's what
(47:42):
gets people running around a little bit, and when that happens,
you tend to get more shooting lanes, more passing lanes,
and more goals.
Speaker 5 (47:49):
Again to won the crack and fall to Columbus. Here
they're sitting gonna shootout and we're gonna hear from Lane
Lambert after this break coming up in just a bit.
But I want to touching the Ben the Ben Meyers
line here, and yeah, I thought you brought a great
point up. I mean, who knows how long this could
be put together. Freddie Gaudrou is getting closer and closer
to being back in. But this evening, I mean he
(48:10):
gave Lane Lambert time after time, chance after a chance
to put him back out there. Him Ty Cartier as
well and Ryan Winterton in the first period. They were
certainly rewarded.
Speaker 4 (48:20):
Yeah, and listen, you know they were rewarded. They're playing
well as a unit. You know, again, I talk about
that perfect combination of a line. There. You got Ty
Karci who's got a great shot, he plays physical. You
talk about Ryan Winterton the same sort of thing, a
shooter and a physical player. Ben Myers likes to play fit.
So that line can play rock'm soccer hockey out there,
and they did tonight, and the penalty that Ben Myers
(48:42):
got by going harder the net, I want to ask
coach Lane Lambert. This maybe off air, we'll see, but
I want to ask him if he talks to Ben
Myers about that penalty and says, here's what I want
you to do differently, or here's what I don't want
to do. Do it every single time, because I think
it's a good idea to take a puck to the net.
We saw it earlier in the game when Myers came
across and got a good, good scoring opportunity. We saw
(49:04):
it late when he got the penalty. But I think
so many good things happen when you take the puck
to the net. He just got tossed into the goalie there,
and I you know, I'm okay with that penalty. What
I'm not okay with is, you know, the cross check
by Linker that puts his team down too.
Speaker 23 (49:16):
Man.
Speaker 5 (49:16):
That hurts ultimately.
Speaker 4 (49:19):
I mean, he was beat but at that point and
so he was taking you know, he was pulling on
all the stops to not allow a guy to go
harder the net with the puck. But maybe you've just
got to be a little more subtle about how you
take that man down rather than a cross check right
down the back of the pan.
Speaker 5 (49:32):
That's one of your key penalty killers right there. That
goes off the ice after that, and you go down
five on three, you're putting your cell behind the eight
ball based on how long they had their five on
three unit out there.
Speaker 4 (49:42):
Absolutely, so you know those are probably two penalties that
one I might you know, not discourage it, and when
I might discourage.
Speaker 5 (49:50):
It again the crack and fall to one in a
shootout to Columbus, and all things considered, maybe a game
where they had to get two points here for the savening,
but they start this out with a shootout point. Columbus
takes the win, and now they turn the page here
to a tough Winnipeg team coming up on Thursday and
Santos eighteen minutes young, but finding plenty of confidence in
(50:11):
their stride as they won again here for this evening
that ends a homestand coming up this weekend. Lane Lambert
his reaction right around the corner. We'll come back after this,
and this is talking Kraken a ninety three to three KJRFM.
Speaker 2 (50:29):
Now back to ducking cracking with Mike Minton on your
home of a crack in sports Radio Matty three point
three kJ.
Speaker 5 (50:36):
R FM cracking fall two one in a shootout to
Columbus's Seedning, and we're getting both sides of the coin
as far as reaction, it's understandable here via Twitter and
also the KJR text line four nine four five to
one one example here we get this here from the
handle Sea Bass say Matt Murray was a unit of
the kracking note need to be more aggressive on the
(50:57):
Ford check power play also was a b off your
for tonight, and Brian's saying, well, fifteen games to score
a fewer than three goals ten times? How is this good? Here?
And we'll answer that, yeah, very bluntly here from Brian.
Speaker 4 (51:11):
It's good if you can only allow one or two. Yeah, right,
And I'm sorry. That is the structure of this team
is they are not going to allow many goals. You
saw it tonight, You've seen it in many other games.
They are not going to allow many goals against, which
means they don't need many goals for. But in a
game that's one one, like I said, against a team
(51:31):
that's at the bottom of their division, you'd like to
see maybe that the crack and get three goals in
that particular game and own this in regulation.
Speaker 5 (51:41):
For the handle s belt Man two five three, say
Matt Murray deserved a lot better. Riiker Evans was a great.
Fourth line was great, just paraphrase and that. But looking
for more elsewhere, certainly here in this one, all right,
cracking again fall two to one to Columbus and the
shootout back downstairs we go for a more reaction and
here's crackinghead coach Lane Lambert.
Speaker 21 (51:59):
I'm wondering those if this is a kind of game
where you would have liked to see the team be
a little more aggressive early on. Give it given the
situation Columbus was in to try to you know, pounce
on them, try to open things up a little before
the game got to that double penalty situation.
Speaker 24 (52:16):
So well, I thought we I thought we generated you know,
I thought we generated chances early on. You know, we
have to find a way and you know the question
is going to be, oh, you know you're not scoring. Well,
we've got to find a way to score, like when
we have opportunities, and we had opportunities, we've got to
bury them. And that's just that's just the bottom line,
(52:36):
you know. And we played solid defensively, you know, and
to your point, the score is one nothing late in
the late end of the second period, we've got to
find a way to make it too.
Speaker 21 (52:46):
How much has that changed the game? The complexity of
the game if you get to that second intermission with
the lead as opposed to you know, how they got
back in it?
Speaker 24 (52:55):
Well, I mean, statistically speaking, you take a look at
teams leading after two periods and once they're records, so
definitely you know it it was it was necessary to
get there. But you know, at the same time, we
shot ourselves in the foot a little bit here. You know,
we take a couple of penalties. Whether you agree with
the penalties or disagree with the penalties, one of them
(53:16):
was two hundred feet away from our net, and we
can't do that.
Speaker 18 (53:24):
I mean, what did you just make a Matt's performance tonight?
It looked like he was really really in control, strong
and strong in net for you.
Speaker 24 (53:31):
Yeah, he's really good, just a big body who plays
his angles very well. And I thought he I thought
he played an outstanding game tonight.
Speaker 18 (53:40):
What is it about his play that when he when
he's going good kind of you know, kind of lets
him be the player he can be in well calm.
Speaker 24 (53:48):
He's very calm, you know, very common in the net
and structured from that standpoint, and you know, I mean
for him, he uses his size to his advantage, you know.
And he certainly made some big saves for us tonight.
Speaker 18 (54:03):
And it seemed like the fourth line may have been
your best line tonight with the way that they were
They're playing creating some chances out there. What did you
like about that that trio overall and kind of what
they were able to do for you in this one.
Speaker 24 (54:13):
I thought they played with speed. I thought Ben Myers
was very good tonight, you know, right from the get go.
And I thought those guys they got it in. They
got it in deep before checked. They didn't turn away
from people, and I thought they they had a great.
Speaker 4 (54:27):
Game, all right.
Speaker 5 (54:33):
That reaction from crackingead coach Lane Lamberta is a crack
at again Vall two one in a shootout to the
Columbus Blue Jackets here and one more time that we'll
kind of touch on this and then give you a
quick preview of Winnipeg coming up and then get out.
So I mean, I look at this where I mean,
al you and I talked about this with ever Rebeck
on Cracking Weekly. Your hope is four points out of
(54:54):
a possible six. Now, based on where Columbus was, they
might be flattering a bit, and it just kind of
feel like this is a game that you really had
to win, and maybe one point of slips off the
table here. So I mean, we'll touch on Winnipeg in
a bit, because they're they're they're playing some pretty good
and tough hockey. San Josea is looking a lot tougher now, certainly,
But this goes again right back to the offense and
(55:17):
the difference of what separates teams like say Florida when
they have could shuck Toronto and they have Matthews McKinnon
and Colorado McDavid as well, and Edmonton, those top line
guys take you to the next level and can be
a big difference here in tight games. The crack and
are still trying to get there, trying to develop their
own guys as well. So for the time being, it
goes right back here to the question how do you
(55:38):
find ways to generate even with McCann and could row.
Speaker 4 (55:41):
Out, Well, you've got to find ways to generate in
ways that I've discussed many times, which is doing what
they're doing, putting pucks to the net, going harder than net,
Ben Myers, taking the puck to the net. Eventually, something's
got to go if you continue to do that, if
you get thirty plus shots on goal, but more importantly,
taking away goal scoring opportunities just as poor as important
(56:03):
as getting goals at the end or end of the ice.
And I think that structure is going to continue to
be a key part to how this team gets into
overtime against tough teams, gets wins in regulation or wins
in overtime. And you know, talking about Winnipeg. Back on
the twenty third of October, in Winnipeg, the team won
three to one Cup. There was some empty net goals
in there, yeah, but they carried a one nothing lead
(56:26):
for a large part of that game, taking away everything
from Winnipeg. They were frustrating them with how little they
could get going. So that's just going to be a
big part of every game.
Speaker 5 (56:35):
This is the way it's got to be right now.
This is how you have to play to your identity
with what you have at this point. And I think
it goes back again to I mean, your goaltending has
got to be there, and they've been there. But also
Lane Lambert raised a great point. You have little margin
for error when it comes to taking penalties two hundred
feet away from your own net.
Speaker 4 (56:52):
Yeah, you absolutely do. I mean, like I said, Ryan
Lingrean makes a decision there to take away a goal
scoring opportunity. He was beat on the play. Like I said,
it's easy for us to second guess that, but it
was hard putting his team down two men in that situation.
But Jared mccannon and Freddy Goodrow could enjoyed the courd
for that matter, could all come back to me, you know, Thursday,
which they're not, but they could all come back. The
(57:14):
structure of how this team plays isn't going to change
when that happens. So yeah, you're gonna get some more
firepower and a guy from Jared mccannon when that happens,
and as well as Freddy Goodrow, but the structure is
not going to change. You just might win more games
in regulation.
Speaker 5 (57:26):
So here's a challenge coming up with a crack and
face of Winnipeg Jets who would just beat Vancouver earlier
this evening, and well are they regressing, and we'll wait
and see, but ten and four suggests they're off to
a pretty good start so far this season. They've been
pretty doubt in defensively, penalty kill has been top five
and plus. Adding here to Mark Schifflee, Kyle Connor, Jonathan
(57:47):
Taves is turning back the clock right now for what
he's doing.
Speaker 4 (57:50):
Yeah, and then you're throwing hellibuck as well as a
top goaltender, and this is a team that does not
give up many goals against. So you've got to play
the same way, just without that top talent that Winnipeg has,
and you've got to do that started in your own
end of the ice. So I expect to see a
game Thursday very similar to the one we saw in Winnipeg.
Speaker 5 (58:08):
Winnipeg has been a handful of cracking three six and
four all time against the Jets, but they have a
chance here to get back to bank wins against Winnipeg
for the first time in franchise history. Of course, they
beat Winnipeg three nothing back on October twenty fifth. Oh,
by the way, after that game, we're back also with
Tom's watch bar, I'm pumped, you're pumped as well.
Speaker 23 (58:27):
Absolutely, I'm missing food on the table in front of us, Mike,
ten days and tons for you to let's go. I
can't wait for that. Also, the Hummus spread fantastic. I
don't know if I want that or the steak nachos
which has been phenomenal as well, but I hope you
can join us out there once again. Read Tom's watch
bar after the game for the Kraken and the Jets
that comes your way Thursday at seven pm Pacific time,
(58:49):
Airtimes six thirty and that we'll do it for here
thanks to Travis Moger, our technical director, Terry Ryan, our
on site engineer, and for al Kiniski. This is Mike
Benton saying good night from Clime the Plagarina. Thank you
for your reaction as usual, thank you for joining us.
Your final score once again in a shootout the Blue
Jackets two and the Kraken one and the Kraken record
(59:11):
now seven four and five, nineteen points on the year
of the Blue Jackets eight seven and one with seventeen points.
Speaker 5 (59:18):
Tat to youa Thursday. This is Talking Kraken a ninety
