You were listening to Sports on Deckwith Dave Gasper. This is Sports on
Deck with Dave Gasper here on thirteenten WIBA. I am Dave Gasper.
You can follow me on Twitter atDee Gasper twenty four. Got a loaded
show coming up. There has beenso much going on in the world of

(00:30):
Wisconsin sports. Adrian Griffin fired bythe Milwaukee Bucks. Doc Rivers has been
hired. The Milwaukee Brewers signed ReysHoskins. They have solved their first base
problem. All of that is goingto be coming up, But first gotta
talk the Green Bay Packers and whathappened last weekend. The Packers lose to

(00:50):
the forty nine Ers. They areeliminated from the playoffs in the divisional round.
And since then, Joe Barry hasbeen fired. He has been like
go, his contract was terminated. It's over all the fire Joe Barry crowd,
all of us who have been apart of it for seemingly very long

(01:11):
time. Finally we have gotten whateveryone's been asking for. Joe Berry is
out as the Packers defensive coordinator. So much to talk about with this team
and what happened that game. AsI was talking about on last week's show.
Heading into that divisional game against theforty nine ers, We're all just

(01:33):
happy to be there, right,We're just thrilled that we made it this
far. Whatever happens, happens, the outcome whatever. If we win,
fantastic. If we lose, ohwell, we weren't supposed to be here.
But as the game went on,something different happened and we're left with

(01:56):
a little bit of this thing.Still overall, successful season, right overall,
cannot be too disappointed. But thegame itself, Green Bay should have
won. They should have won. They had a lead, they blew it,
They gave up a touchdown late, missed kicks from Anders Carlson, missed

(02:21):
opportunities in the first half to getseven points instead of three. A dropped
interception by Darnell Savage I could haveeasily been a pick six. Missed opportunities
cost him that game. If thePackers just got thoroughly outclassed by the forty
nine ers and they lost by liketwenty and they had no position, they

(02:45):
were not deserving of winning that game. We all have been fine, whatever,
Happy to be there. He raninto a buzz saw and a great
team with forty nine ers. That'sfine. But when you had the chance
to win, it was right there, and they grasp defeat from the jaws
of victory once again. It juststings. It stings like all the Aaron

(03:10):
Rodgers playoff losses. It stings likeall the Brett Favre playoff losses, all
those times where it's like, man, we could have made it one more
week. We could have made itto the NFC Championship game. We could
have made it to the super Bowl. We were good enough. If you
just don't miss those opportunities, ifyou don't drop that interception, if you

(03:32):
finish that drive in the red zone, if you don't miss that field goal,
if you just do that, ifyou just do that part right,
you're good enough to win the SuperBowl. You were good enough to win
that game. And the Packers weregood enough to win that game. They

(03:53):
were not outclassed by the forty nineers, but they lost anyways, And
that's what adds the sting. That'sthe sting we were all feeling coming out
of that loss, because going inwe're just happy to be there. Whatever
the outcome is fine. But whenyou have the thought in your head,

(04:17):
when you're there in the fourth quarterand you're in position to win. The
expectations everything in your head, itgets raised. It's like, we can
actually win this and pull this off, and then they lose at the end
of it. It's just it's frustrating, it really is. There's no way
around it. But that's Packers footballfor you, baby, That's Packers football.

(04:42):
But at the very least, thesuccess in the postseason, making it
there and making it to the Divisionalround did not lead to Joe Barry keeping
his job. Now, I wasworried for a second there that Joe Barry
was going to stick around because adefense wasn't too awful in that loss to
the forty nine ers. There maybecould have been a way Matt Leffluor could

(05:05):
just fly well. The defense reallywasn't the problem here, and the defense
played pretty well down the stretch,so maybe we should keep Joe Berry.
But thankfully Matt Lafluor did not fallfor that. Joe Berry is out.
There will be a new defensive coordinatoronce again for the Green Bay Packers next

(05:26):
season, and we're all wondering, well, who's it gonna be. Who
are we going to complain about thistime? The Packers. It has been
reported are interviewing Brandon Staley for theirvacant DC position. Brandon Staley, the
former head coach of the Chargers whogot fired mid season this year because the

(05:49):
Chargers continue to fail in important situationsand in the playoffs and in every way
imaginable, Brandon Staley's Chargers came upshort. So people are less than thrilled

(06:10):
about the idea of Brandon Staley comingin, even as a defensive coordinator.
He may not be head coach worthy, but defense is where Staley made his
mark, and maybe that's just wherehe's best to be. But I'm not
really thrilled about the idea of BrandonStaley either. I don't think I don't

(06:33):
think anyone is. Kurt ben Kirt, former Packers quarterback, put it perfectly
on Twitter, saying, I willnot judge a book by the first several
chapters. Not about judging the bookby its cover, by the first several
chapters of the book. For BrandonSaley, it's like, I don't really

(06:55):
think we should go down this path, and if you do, it won't
be long till the fire Brandon Staleymomentum gets going. It would probably be
immediately after he gets hired. There'sgonna be someone tweeting Firebrand and Staley,
but yeah, that would just bethat. That's not a route I'd like
to see them. I'd like tosee them go elsewhere for their defensive coordinator.

(07:16):
The name that I really like, and I know some people are going
to push back on me on this, but it's Jim Leonard. Jim Leonard
is the name that I'm looking forfor Packers defensive coordinator. Matt Lafleur wanted
him a couple of years ago.The job was his if he wanted it.
Lafloor offered it to him, andLeonard said no because he wanted to

(07:39):
stay at Wisconsin be the defensive coordinatorthere and he could probably tell Paul christ
maybe on his way out, andthen Leonard would have the path to be
the head coach of Wisconsin. Andhe thought he had that Chris was out
and then he was the interim coach, but then Luke Fickle comes out of

(08:00):
Cincinnati and Leonard's out of a jobat Wisconsin. So he spent this past
year as a defensive analyst for Illinoisand he's gonna be looking for a job
because last year he kind of missedout on the hiring cycle. He was
late getting out there and still tryingto process what was going on. But

(08:24):
now Jim Leonard's in a position wherehe can really get whatever job he wants.
He can look out and either geta defensive coordinator job. He probably
could get hired as a head coachsomewhere if you really wanted to, although
the college head coach hiring cycle haskind of gone through. But maybe NFL
defensive coordinator. He was offered thejob before, played a long time in

(08:46):
the league. He certainly could doit. He has loved and respected by
his players. I think it'd bea great path for the Packers to go.
They offered it to him before, they'd have rather had him than Joe
Berry. Well they ended up withBarry. Now Barry gets fired, why

(09:09):
not go back to Leonard if he'sopen to it, which I think he
would be. He hasn't been hiredanywhere else. He's too smart, he's
too good to stay a senior defensiveanalyst for the University of Illinois. Like,
come on, that dude can runsomebody's defense. So for me,

(09:31):
for my money, I'd love tosee Jim Leonard get the job. He'd
be Wisconsin Royalty, and for once, we may end up having a Packer's
defensive coordinator that the entirety of Packerssocial media does not want to immediately fire.
Because everyone was looking at firing JoeBerry as soon as he was hired.

(09:54):
Everyone was looking at firing Mike Petton. For years, everyone wanted Dom
k fired. I mean for friggingyears. We thought it was a long
time that we wanted to see JoeBarry fired. We wanted to see Dom
Capers fired for longer than Joe Barryhad his job to begin with. That
was a rough time. But stillmy pick is Jim Leonard. That is

(10:18):
who I would like to see runthe Packers defense. The Packers are late
to the hiring cycle, making ittwo weeks into the postseason. Then halfway
through the week is when they firetheir DC. The other teams that missed
out on the playoffs, they're alreadyhiring their DC candidates. A lot of
the top ones have already gone offthe board, they've been hired elsewhere,

(10:41):
or even some of those other topdcs they're getting hired as head coaches.
So you're missing out on a lotof those guys who have the current NFL
experience being the defensive coordinator Jim Leonard. Though he's out there, he absolutely
is still out there. So forme, for my money, I'd love

(11:05):
to see Jim Leonard be the guy, put him as a Packers' defensive coordinator,
get him back in the state ofWisconsin for football where he wants to
be, even though it's not theUniversity of Wisconsin. I think it'd be
a great spot for him. Ithink he'd be happy with it. I
think the Packers will be happy andwe'd see a much stronger Packers defense with

(11:30):
the Leonard running the show. Comingup, the Milwaukee Brewers finally finally made
a move at first base. MattArnold woke up and he signed the top
for agent first baseman on the market. We'll get into that coming up.
You're listening to Sports on Deck withDave Gasper here on thirteen to ten WIBA.

(12:09):
Sports on Deck with Dave Gasper continueshere on your Saturday. Even though
we're gonna be talking about first basehere centerfield John Fogerty. Of course,
there's not a song about first base, unfortunately, at least not the baseball
since first base. But anyways, first base has been solved. For the

(12:31):
Milwaukee Brewers, Reece Hoskins has beensigned to a two year, thirty four
million dollars contract with a player optout after the first season. So it's
essentially a modified pillow contract for reeHoskins. And he's coming off an acl
tair that he suffered in spring traininglast year. He could have made it

(12:56):
back potentially for the World Series ifthe Phillies had made it, but they
lost to Arizona, similar to whatthe Brewers did in the playoffs. But
he did not play last year.So he's coming off a lost season,
hit free agency, and the Brewerssigned him to a pillow contract. Now,
if it wasn't for the injury,Hoskins will be looking at a long

(13:18):
term one hundred plus million dollar contractthis winter. That's probably what he would
have gotten. Instead, he signsessentially a one year, seventeen ish million
dollar deal with the Brewers to resethis value so he can go into next

(13:39):
offseason, hopefully with a showcase yearin Milwaukee, and he can earn that
long term nine figure contract. That'sthe goal for Reese Hoskins and for the
Brewers. I mean this worked outperfectly. I've been saying this for weeks.

(14:00):
I've been saying this all off seasonthat the Burgers should be getting Reee
Hoskins. It made way too muchsense because he was coming off that acl
tair. He is going to belooking for a short term deal. Now.
The Brewers in free agency generally preferto give out shorter term deals.
They don't like to go long termwith big external free agent signs. The

(14:24):
last time they did that was LorenzoCaine, and they mostly only did that
because they drafted him and developed him, and they brought him up and then
they traded him to Kansas City toget Zach Grienky, but they already knew
him. Reee Hoskins was never inthe Brewers' organization at all prior to this.

(14:45):
So they go short term, whichfits into their plan, their mold,
and how it would fit with thisroster. The Brewers have a bunch
of corner infield prospects coming up inthe next year or so that they're going
to to have room for. Butin the meantime, you need something.
You can't have Jake Powers as yourfirst basement. I've been saying that all
along. You simply that that simplycannot be the plan, and it was

(15:09):
not. So Rehys Hoskins is theplan. Career two forty two hitter with
a one twenty five ohps plus inhis career, he is a better than
league average hitter. I know thebatting average is for some people an issue,
but two forty for the type ofpower he brings, that's pretty solid.
He draws a lot of walks,he gets on base, and he's

(15:33):
generally a very productive, well aboveaverage hitter. He's never had a full
season with fewer than twenty seven homeruns, never had one in his career.
Last season, the Brewer's top homerun hitter was Willie Domas with twenty
four. So think about it.I mean, you needed power. You

(15:54):
didn't have it. For all thoseprevious years that the Brewers were good,
they had a couple of guys withthirty plus home runs a season. They
didn't have any of them. Lastyear. They had nobody with twenty five
homers last season. What happened tothe power? So the Brewers needed thump,
They needed power, and that thatwas a big thing on their to

(16:15):
do list of offseason, and cornerinfield was the it's the easiest place to
get it. That's where your powerhitters are, and for years the Brewers
have had issues solving the corner infieldpositions. They've drafted up the middle guys,
which is great, but you don'tget a ton of power from them.
First base and third base have beenneglected for years. Third base is

(16:41):
still an open competition. It's goingto be between Andrew Mountasterio and Tyler Black
in spring training unless they bring insomebody else. I don't see them paying
for Matt Chapman. I don't seethat happening. So you're looking at third
base being a question mark. Andpreviously you were looking at first base being
a major problem with Jake Bowers andOwen Miller, but now with Hoskins,

(17:06):
that problem has been completely solved.I understand concerns coming off the ACL tear,
but this dude had a fully healthyoff season. He was just about
ready to play back in October. So he's gone through this whole offseason pretty
much normally, and he's going tobe one hundred and ready to go in
spring training and he is going tobe motivated to have a showcase here.

(17:33):
He brings right handed power to aBrewers lineup that needs it and He's going
to be playing in a ballpark thatis going to suit him perfectly. This
is a perfect place. Milwaukee's aperfect place for him to showcase that he
is healthy, put up monster numbers, and then reach free agency once again.

(17:56):
And this is the ideal plan. The Brewers want him to opt out.
That's what they want. They wentinto this two year, thirty four
million dollar contract. They went intothis wanting him to opt out early,
not that they don't want him tobe there for two years, but because
they know if he has a reallygood season for them in twenty twenty four,

(18:21):
he is going to opt out.The only reason that Reese Hoskins would
opt in and stay for the secondyear of that contract is if he either
gets hurt again or is absolutely terriblethat he feels he cannot get seventeen million
dollars a season on the open market. So he would have to be pretty

(18:42):
darn bad this year for him toopt out and believe that he could not
get or for him to not getseventeen million dollars a season on the open
market, he would have to bepretty darn bad, or he'd have to
miss most of the season with aninjury again. So the Brewers don't want

(19:03):
that obviously. They'd rather just havehim be healthy and be good for this
year and then they can move on. They can get that seventeen million off
the payroll for twenty twenty five andgive it to the young kids, either
Tyler Black or Brock Wilkin or MikeBovee or Ernesto Martinez or any of the
other first basement Wes Clark, anyof them that they have done in the

(19:26):
minor league system. That could bethe first basement of the future. I
think that's the route they'd rather go. So they want to see Reyese Hoskins
opt out after this year, andif he does, the Brewers can give
him a qualifying offer, which hewill reject, and then the Brewers would

(19:51):
recoup a draft pick at the endof the first round if he signs for
more than fifty million dollars, whichhe will. So now you're looking at
the Brewers long term, long termhere, what has a talk been about
Corvin Burns, Willie Damas trading them, not trading them? What's the trade

(20:12):
off? You either trade them nowget some assets that can help you out
in the near term, or youhold on to them. You make one
final run in twenty twenty four withthese guys, and then you give them
a qualifying offer and you get adraft pick in return. Now, for
most people, they look at thedraft pick and it's like, ah,
that's nothing. But it's not nothing. It is absolutely not nothing, especially

(20:37):
when you combine them together. Iwant you to listen very closely here.
When you have those three guys Burns, Adamis Hoskins that you know are going
to sign for big money, theyare not going to sign long term with
you, but you can't afford tolose them on your team and be competitive

(20:59):
this year, you hold on toall three. You give all three of
them a qualifying offer in one offseason, knowing that they'll sign elsewhere. You
will recoup a draft pick for allthree of them at the end of the
first round. So you go intothat twenty twenty five draft with your regular

(21:22):
first round pick, your three firstround picks for the guys that you lost
in free agency, plus your competitivebounce round a pick for the Brewers.
That is five picks in what willend up being the first forty ish selections.
Five of the first forty picks. That is unbelievable. Nobody has that

(21:48):
the Brewers would be the Kings ofthe twenty twenty five draft. A loaded
draft class, by the way, from every single scout that I have talked
to, it is a loaded class. The Brewers would have probably the largest
bonus pool of any team with that, and we've seen that they will stretch
that bonus pool dollar as far asit can. And you load up in

(22:14):
that twenty twenty five draft, andthose picks will become the future of this
farm system, in the future ofthis organization by the time they're ready.
Yes, it will be delayed gratification. I know people don't like delayed gratification.
You'd rather see them traded. Now, get some guys that are in
Triple A or the Big Leagues orDouble A or something that can help you
out in the near term, andyou get that instant gratification of the players

(22:40):
that you get back. I knowsome people would prefer that, but it's
also a sound strategy to hold onto them, hold on to Burns and
a Damis and now you add Hoskins. Hold on to them for twenty twenty
four, take a run this yearas best you can, and then you

(23:03):
let them go in free agency. With a qualifying offer attached, You get
your draft picks back. You loadup on a loaded draft class with picks,
and you replenish your farm system.Because your farm system is graduating a
ton right now. You just graduateda bunch of outfielders last year, plus

(23:25):
Bryce Terrang. You're gonna be graduatingmore this year with Churio and Black Caro
is gonna be coming up. Yougot your pitchers, Robert Gasser, Carlos
Rodriguez, Jacob Asowski, They're allgoing to be up soon. This whole
top of the Bruis' farm system isabout to be graduating. In order to
stay consistently competitive, which is thegoal of the Brewers. That's something that
they have told us time and timeagain is their goal. In order to

(23:48):
do that, in order to stayconsistently competitive, you have to have a
strong farm system continually. You can'tjust let it go by the wayside.
The Brewers graduated Mitchell and Freelich andWeimer and Terraining last year, and their
farm system now may be stronger thanwhat it was then. You have to

(24:11):
keep adding to the farm system, and the draft is the best way to
do that. The international free agentmarket is the second best way to do
that. Trades should be seen fora competitive team as just a minor way
to replenish their farm system. TheBrewers should not be looking to trade away

(24:34):
their big league talent in order toreplenish their farm system. That's a rebuild.
That's not how they are going towant to build that farm system and
build that consistently competitive team. Becauseyou're trading away your big league talent,
that doesn't help you stay competitive inthe now. So you hold onto these

(24:55):
guys and Hoskins takes the place ofBrandon woodruff on the qualifying offer list because
Woodroof would have gotten the same thingas Burns and a Damis with the QO
and then being let walk this nextoffseason had he been healthy. But they
had a non tender run because hehad shoulder surgery and wasn't gonna be able
to pitch. So they're not goingto get the qualifying offer for Woodroffe.

(25:18):
But now Hoskins can step in andtake that spot. But if you're going
to stay consistently competitive, trades cannotbe the primary way you replenish your farm
system. It needs to be thedraft, and it needs to be international
free agency. The sixteen seventeen yearolds. They signed out of Venezuela in
the Dominican Republic. That's how theygot Jackson Curia. That's how they got

(25:42):
him. Best prospect they've seen inages since Ryan Braun in the Brewers system.
So that is how you build aconsistently competitive winner. So for the
Brewers, their strategy hold on toBurns and would in Adamis and Hoskins now

(26:07):
give them the qualifying offer load upon twenty twenty five. Just imagine the
Packers with five of the first fortypicks in the NFL Draft, five first
rounders and the first part of thesecond round, five picks in that span.
We'd all be jumping for joy ifthe Packers had that. Granted,

(26:32):
it's more instant gratification in the NFLDraft than the MLB Draft, but even
delayed gratification is still gratification. Comingup, the Bucks were not willing to
wait for gratification with Adrian Griffin,we'll talk about that's coming up, and

(26:52):
the new coach of the Bucks aswell. You're listening to Sports on Deck
here with Dave gas Brown thirteen toten, wiba on again this new graft
On round and handed by Home Sportson Deca. Dave Gasper continues here for

(27:21):
a little bit longer on Yours Saturday. Good Bye to you is exactly what
Milwaukee Bucks said to Adrian Griffin fortythree games into his tenure as Bucks head
coach. Forty three games did noteven make it through his first season at
the Helm in Milwaukee, a thirtyand thirteen record. By all accounts,

(27:47):
that's generally a good record. Mostcoaches with a record like that do not
get fired. But at the sametime, even with that thirty and thirteen
record, this team felt like theywere underperforming. I really did. The
defense's taking a step back this year. They brought in Damian Lillard to pair

(28:14):
with Giannis, and the Bucks havegone all in on trying to keep Yiannis
and go back to the NBA Finalsand get another title with Giannis while they
can. This is the golden eraof Bucks basketball. They have a window
that is wide open right now andthey're trying to keep it open as long

(28:36):
as possible. And it seemed likethe head coach was trying to close that
window, or the very least hewasn't helping keep it open. So they
made a change. Adrian Griffin outafter forty three games. Some may feel
it's unfair, but at the sametime, it also felt like like Griffin

(29:00):
had lost the clubhouse. The playerswere not big fans of his schemes offensively
defensively, they felt they had totake over. They were not being coached
well enough. Griffin did not seemready for the opportunity. He had been
interviewed over a dozen times for headcoaching jobs, never got one until he

(29:25):
got one with the Bucks. Maybenow we're seeing why he never got that
head coaching job before. But itwas time for change in Milwaukee. It
was, and it's unfortunate how thiswhole thing is played out. It's not
how the Bucks were intending on this, not how they wanted this to go,

(29:47):
but they hired a first time headcoach to try to get them back
to the NBA finals, bringing ina star like Damian Lillard to pair with
Giannis and Griffin wasn't able to doit, but the Bucks hired him essentially

(30:07):
at Janni's behest. When it cameto the finalists, it was Griffin,
it was Kenny Atkinson, and itwas Nick Nurse and Janice with the power
that he has, essentially over thatBucks organization. Reports are Giannis did not
want Nick Nurse for whatever reason.I'm not sure what the reason was,

(30:30):
but Jannis did not want Nick Nurseto be the head coach of the Bucks,
so he supported Griffin in that processbecause he wanted somebody that wasn't Nurse.
So the Bucks, listening to theirpowerful superstar, said Okay, if
Jannis wants this guy to be thecoach, we'll hire him to be the

(30:52):
coach. And it backfired horribly, which again is why you don't listen to
players when they tell you which coachthey want to hire. Your job to
hire the coach the player's job toplay. I love Giannis as much as
the next guy. I really do. But when players, even as powerful

(31:18):
as they are, is as muchof a superstar as they are, when
they try to get that involved inhand picking their head coach like that,
it generally doesn't end well. There'sa reason that the players are players,
and there's the reason why the frontoffice people work in the front office.

(31:41):
The front office people should be makingthose decisions. John Horst has made a
lot of great decisions over the yearssince he's been named the Bucks GM.
A lot of great decisions. HiringAdrian Griffin was not one of them.
I understand listening to Giannis and whathe wants coach. Maybe they just shouldn't

(32:02):
have fired Bud to begin with. But that's a whole different conversation. But
Adrian Griffin lost that locker room. They tried giving him opportunities, they tried
giving him the benefit of the doubt, but things did not get better under
Griffin throughout the season. The Buckspeople, the front office people noticed it.

(32:25):
That's why they made this move. Now the players were noticing it.
There was discontent they're in the lockerroom about how things were going, and
when you lose the locker room,it's time to go. So I'm not
entirely surprised by the firing. Alot of people, I mean a lot

(32:45):
of us on the outside do notknow just exactly how bad things are in
the locker room. They never tellus, right, that's not something you
just put out there, that everysingle issue, every single piece of drama
that happens in a sports locker roomthat doesn't get out. But it had

(33:05):
become kind of clear, especially inthe days following Griffin's firing, that there
was some concern in that locker roomand Griffin, it appeared, had lost
it. And when you lose thefaith of the locker room, it's over.
It's best to just get out.And that's what the Bucks did.
They made the move. Griffin isout. Joe Prunty was taken over as

(33:28):
interim GM, but her interim headcoach, but that didn't last very long.
Again, Joe Prunty was the interimbefore why when they fired the lovely
head coach Jason Kidd, Joe Peruntywas named interim and then Mike Budenholzer took
over. But yeah, Joe Peruntynamed interim head coach and then the next

(33:54):
day Dac Rivers gets hired as thenext Bucks head coach. So Doc Rivers
is going to be coming in.He gets a forty million dollar deal.
He leaves a TV business after lessthan a full season being a TV analyst,
and Doc Rivers is going to beheading to the Bucks sideline and taking
over that team. He's also bringingin dave Yorger joining the staff and Doc

(34:17):
Rivers. Doc Rivers is experienced, yes, his experience as a head coach.
Adrian Griffin was not. Apparently overthe past several weeks the Bucks asked
Rivers to kind of mentor Griffin abit. It's kind of on the side.
Just give him a little bit ofhelp. Doesn't really know what he's
doing. Give him some advice. But now Doc Rivers is going to be

(34:43):
taken over this Milwaukee Bucks team. And Doc Rivers has his own flaws.
You know, again, you're searchingfor a head coach and experienced head coach
in the middle of a season,so there's only so many guys who are
gonna find available. It's not goingto be like you're typical end of season
coaching carousel where you got other guysthat were fired or guys that are just

(35:05):
on the markets or maybe willing tomove. It's not like that. So
you pluck Doc Rivers from the televisionside, give him a long term deal,
and we'll see how it goes. But he's going to be the guy
going forward for the next couple ofyears. Doc Rivers. His teams have

(35:27):
lost their last five game sevens.Doc Rivers has lost his last five game
sevens that he's been in. He'sfailed to reach the conference finals. Always
comes up short guts like Game sevenand falters. Now, you could argue
that all of those losses cannot beblamed solely on him. After all,
he's the coach, he's not playing. It's not all his fault. He

(35:50):
can drop all the perfect plays hewants. If the players don't hit the
shots, what's he supposed to doabout it. So we'll see how it
goes. But a lot of termoil and turn over there with the Bucks.
They were not expecting to have tofire their coach midseason, but Griffin
was not it. This team wasunderperforming and it looked like if they stayed

(36:14):
the course with Griffin and they gotto the playoffs, it would have been
another early exit for him for theBucks, and they don't want that.
They don't they cannot afford that. They want to keep Giannis happy, and
they want to win more titles whilethey can, while Jannis is in his

(36:34):
prime. You got to win asmany titles as you possibly can. So
give credit to John Horse for makingthe move. I gave a ton of
credit for him, to him tojust simply for building this roster the way
that it is. Being aggressive.Getting Damian Lillard Adrian Griffin was a misstep.
I understand wanting to listen to Janisif Jannis really didn't want Nick Nurse.

(37:00):
Not hiring Nick Nurse is probably asmart move, but hiring Adrian Griffin
did not work out. And nowthe Bucks are paying Mike Budenholzer on his
buyout, they're paying Adrian Griffin, and now they're going to be paying Doc
Rivers forty million dollars total over thenext couple of seasons to coach this team.

(37:23):
Coming up, a few final thoughts. You're listening to Sports on Deck
with Dave Gasper here on thirteen toten WIBA Sports on Deck with Dave Gasper.

(37:47):
Entering the final few minutes here onyour Saturday. A couple things coming
up for all these teams, becausenow that we've got so much going on,
moves have been made. What's left? What's coming up next? What
do we have to look forward tofrom these teams? Well, for the
Packers, got to get an improvementat defensive coordinator, all right, that's

(38:12):
the big thing. And improvement BrandonStaley would not really be an improvement.
So you got to get better, maybe a guy without NFL defensive coordinator experience,
because those guys that are unemployed rightnow, probably because they weren't that
good, just saying their defenses probablyweren't that good. Maybe that's why they

(38:34):
were available. So maybe a guylike Jim Leonard could come in, but
the Packers will have to hire onesoon. The hiring cycle is going right
now in the NFL. So whileother teams are still searching for their defensive
coordinators and guys are moving around, new head coaches are getting hired and they're
going to be bringing defensive coordinators eitherwith them or the current defensive coordinator is

(38:55):
going to be out a whole bunchof movement on the carousels, So the
Packers they're gonna have to jump onand they're gonna have to try and find
an improvement at that spot and settleit once and for all. So we've
got that to look forward to.That's gonna be coming up this next week.
Hopefully this next week is when thePackers will be hiring their next defensive

(39:15):
coordinator, or at least we'll beseeing more and more interviews coming through for
the Brewers. Meanwhile, they signedReese Hoskins, which we've talked about here
on the show. But what elsedo they have love to do? You
got to get at least one morestarting pitcher, I think I'm telling you
right now, if Joe Ross isyour number five starter entering the season,

(39:37):
I am very very uncomfortable with that, and you gotta get some more depth
there, some more proven veteran depth. So I think you gotta get one
more starting pitcher if you're the Brewers. A pitching market maybe starting to move
slightly. We're getting closer and closerto spring training, less than three weeks
away now from pitchers and catchers reporting. I know it can't come soon enough,

(39:58):
but that's going to be coming upwell. So hopefully, hopefully the
Birds can get one more and thenlargely I think they're done. You could
maybe get another bullpen arm if youwant to. You don't need to,
you could if you want to.DH. Honestly, I think offensively they're
just about done. I don't seethem going after a Justin Turner. They
could use a Justin Turner now, maybe spell a little bit at third base,

(40:22):
could DH some, but I thinkwith their outfield glut, I think
they're just going to rotate guys throughthat DH spot. So you don't necessarily
need to get one, but it'dbe nice to have one. So we'll
see if the Birds make any moremoves there, but they got Reese Hoskins,
so I am very very happy withthat, and you should be two

(40:42):
that'll do it for me. Iam completely out of time. Thank you
for listening. This has been Sportson Deck with Dave gasper here on thirteen
