You were listening to Sports on Deckwith Dave Gasper. Welcome to Sports on
Deck with Dave Gasper here on thirteento ten Wiva. I am, of
course Dave Gasper. You can followme on Twitter at de Gasper twenty four
And we got a lot to getto. A lot has been happening here
in the world of sports this weekbefore Christmas. Yes, Christmas is already
(00:33):
coming up. Merry Christmas to oneand all, and there is no shortage
of news, as there pretty muchnever is. The Green Bay Packers have
issues on defense yet again. Everyoneis calling for Joe Berry's job yet again.
We will dive into that later onin the show as well, but
(00:57):
I want to start with the Milwaukeeberw where I pretty much almost always start,
and the Adrian Hauser trade from thisweek and is what is going on
here because the Brewers lack pitching depthas it is, and then this week
(01:19):
they make a trade with David Stearnsand the New York Mets, sending out
Adrian Hauser and Tyrone Taylor to NewYork in exchange for Coleman Crow. Now,
most of you probably do not knowwho Coleman Crow is, and you
can be excused for that. Heis a minor league pitcher who put up
(01:40):
some really good numbers in Double Athis year, but suffered an elbow injury
and underwent Tommy John surgery over thesummer, so he is not going to
pitch in twenty twenty four. TheBurgers say that there is a chance that
maybe he gets back on the moundlate in the year, but we're not
going to see him in Milwaukee intwenty five. Twenty four the earliest will
see him as twenty twenty five.So the Brewers traded two big league contributors
(02:08):
for one prospect who will not evenhelp this year. This is a very
interesting trade on its face. Justlooking at it as a standalone trade,
I'd say the Brewers lost this tradebecause you're sending out pitching depth. Yes,
(02:30):
you're sending out outfield depth Tyrone Taylor. It made sense to dump him.
He was out of minor league options, he was not going to be
playing. It made tense to moveon from him, and you weren't going
to get much for Taylor. Butpackaging Taylor with Adrian Hauser, a capable
big league pitcher who can eat upinnings for you when you're already short on
(02:51):
Ennings in the rotation. Pairing thosetwo together and only getting a guy who
won't hitch this next year is,in my opinion, a bad trade standalone.
It's a bad trade for Matt Arnold. He did not get a single
twenty twenty four contributor to replace theseguys. That's my issue with this.
(03:17):
Moving on from Taylor, I'm finewith it. Getting Coleman Crow I'm fine
with it. There's a lot tolike about Coleman crow injury aside his pitch
metrics, the analytics, the nerdynumbers, the induced vertical break, all
that kind of stuff. Those areall very strong. There's a lot of
reasons to like Coleman Crowe as aprospect. The issue is he's not going
(03:42):
to pitch for you this year, and if you intend to compete in twenty
twenty four, which everything the Brewershave told us, everything that they have
indicated, would say that they aregoing to try to compete, Shipping Houser
out of their rotation doesn't really helpunless this is a precursor to something else,
(04:08):
a precursor to something bigger. AndI'm not talking about a Corbyn Burns
trade, because that's what everyone's beenthinking is going to be the case.
Corbyn Burns. Corbyn Burns, CorbenBurns. That's been the name on the
trade market this entire time, allthe rumors, all the reporters, everyone's
(04:29):
talking about Corbyn Burns has to betraded. He's going to be traded.
They're talking with teams, teams areinterested, YadA, YadA, YadA.
Corbyn Burns on the trade market. That's been the talk of the town and
the Burgers. Trade is starting Pitcher, but it's not Burns. And Frankly,
at this point, I continue tostand by my take that Corbyn Burns
(04:53):
will not be traded this offseason.I don't think he gets moved, And
as strange as it sounds, Ithink the Houser trade diminishes the chance even
more that Corbn Burns gets moved becauseyou've already lost Woodruff, now you've lost
(05:15):
Hawser. I really don't think youcan trade away Corbyn Burns and still have
this rotation be a strength and beable to backfill enough endings in this rotation
to make it capable of helping leadthis team to the playoffs. I don't
(05:36):
think it's possible le Brewers still havein my opinion, two more starting pitchers
to go get if you trade Burns, you make that three. Now.
Granted, there is a lot ofoff season still left, so this rotation
(05:59):
is by no means of finished productright now. But right now it's looking
pretty ugly, especially on that backend. Colin Ray and Joe Ross as
your four and five starters going intothe season, no, thank you.
You got to get at least one, preferably two more starting pitchers. I
(06:20):
think this Housard deal is a precursorto something because they cleared two forty man
roster spots. The forty man wasfull, they signed Eric cost to be
the backup catcher. Forty man wasfull. Then immediately they traded away Howser
and Taylor. Now they've got twoopen forty man spots. They're opening them,
(06:45):
opening them up for somebody. They'vegot something planned. I don't know
what it is. I'm pretty sureit's not a Burns trade, but they've
got something planned, something that they'reworking on because they have to. You
don't make this kind of trade withouthaving that in the works. Same thing
(07:06):
with the Josh Hater trade. Wayback when they made that trade with a
lot of other things in the works. Now none of them came to fruition,
which was incredibly disappointing, But theymade that trade because they intended on
making these other massive moves. Nowthis is the off season rather than the
(07:30):
trade deadline, which allows them moreof an opportunity to get these deals done.
But they've got more moves to make. But I'm curious now how the
pitching market and how the trade marketfor Corbyn Burns is going to work.
(07:51):
The Dodgers are seemingly out on theBurns trade market. They have signed Otani,
they have gotten Tyler glasnow, theyhave signed Yoshinobu Yamamoto. They got
the three biggest guys out there onthe pitching market. So I don't think
they're going to be looking for aBurns trade at this point. However,
(08:16):
the other teams that missed out onYamamoto, they might be New York,
the Mets, the Yankees, Baltimore, Toronto, Texas, Philly, lots
(08:37):
of different teams that missed out thatcould very well be interested. San Francisco.
They're all looking for a top ofthe rotation arm. The Dodgers got
them all, so that leaves alot of teams left in demand left that
are demanding a high end starting pitcher, and the Burrs are sitting pretty holding
(09:01):
onto Burns. I still think theBurrs are going to have to be blown
away, and I think they won'tbe. And given the move of Howser,
I think the Brewers have put themselvesin a spot where they simply cannot
trade Corbyn Burns. It can't doit this offseason, and we've seen from
(09:24):
Ken Rosenthal's reporting that Marcott Nausio andthe Brewers are not keen on the idea
of trading him mid season if they'rein contention because of the backlash lay received
from the Josh Hater trade. Welldone, Brewers, Twitter, you have
successfully bullied Brewer's ownership and in neverwanting to do something like that again,
(09:46):
because the Hater trade was an absolutedisaster. At least in twenty twenty two,
you're able to put some lipstick ona pig in a sense by flipping
Asterie Ruiz for William Contreras. Butthe backlash to the Hater trade is causing
(10:07):
real problems for Brewers' ownership and whatthey want to do with Corbyn Burns because
they know what the reaction is goingto be. They know they can't trade
a midseason. They know the offseason is the best chance. But they've
already lost Woodruff for nothing. Theycan't afford to lose Burns and Woodroff in
(10:31):
the same offseason, as well asnow losing Houser. They can't do it.
Some team is certainly going to try. Some desperate team is going to
try to offer up as much asthey can to convince the Bruers to trade
(10:52):
Corbyn Burns. I'm not convinced MattArnold will pull the trigger, but other
teams are certainly going to try.Coming up, Joe Berry's defense is in
hot water yet again. How muchlonger is he going to have his job?
We'll get more into that coming up. You're listening to Sports on Deck
(11:15):
with Dave Gasper here on thirteen tenWIBA. Sports on Deck with Dave Gasper
(11:37):
rolls on here on your Saturday afternoon. Tomorrow, the Green Bay Packers will
take on the Carolina Panthers. Thetwo and twelve Carolina Panthers. They just
got their second win of the seasonlast week, winning nine to seven.
(12:00):
It's been a struggle down there inCarolina. It's been a struggle offensively to
try to get everything in sync. And Bryce Young number one overall pick,
he's had a rough go, buthis head coach has already been fired.
There have been a lot of cooksin the kitchen there in terms of offensive
coaches, and some guys have beenshown the door already. There's been a
power struggle and now we've got awhole new system in place in Carolina,
(12:26):
maybe trying to turn things around witha very talented Bryce Young at quarterback.
But even still, even with thewin, they scored just nine points.
It's been an inept off It's beenan inept offense all season for Carolina.
And now they get to face JoeBarry's defense on Sunday, and I'll tell
(12:50):
you what, This is going tobe a game that may decide what happens
with Joe Barry because Joe Berry, his seat is as hot as the volcano
in Iceland right now, the volcanothat's been erupting for the past couple of
(13:11):
days. That's how hot Joe Berry'sseat is. Everyone is calling for his
job. There are some good performancesagainst the Chiefs and the defense was looking
okay, but then massively disappointing gameagainst the Giants everyone's back off. It's
like, okay, Joe, comeon, figure it out, and then
(13:35):
Joe Berry's defense gets absolutely torched byBaker Mayfield. Baker Mayfield. Mayfield comes
in to Lambeau in December three hundredand fifty three passing yards, seven of
eleven on third downs Tampa Bay's offensefour hundred and fifty two total yards.
(13:58):
Baker Mayfield had a perfect one hundredand fifty eight point three passer rating perfect.
Baker Mayfield as the first visiting quarterbackever to have a perfect passer rating
at Lambeau Field all because he wasplaying Joe Berry's defense that got absolutely torched.
(14:31):
They were nowhere close. All daylong. Just watching the game was
incredibly painful. Whenever the Packers wereon defense, they were not even close
to these receivers. They were easyreceptions, big yardage, and the Packers
(14:56):
had no answer, which is whatwe've just come to expect from Joe Berry.
At this point. Most of Packers'nation wanted Joe Berry fired after last
season, and only more people havejoined that bandwagon in the last couple of
weeks. I know there were somethat were calling for, hey, let's
(15:20):
give them some credit for holding theChiefs to just nineteen points, to having
a strong game against Kansas City holdingdown Patrick Mahomes. It's like, okay,
sure, give them some props. But then to have back to back
stinkers like this against teams that thePackers should beat, they'd have been sitting
(15:43):
pretty for a playoff spot. They'dgotten themselves right in there. All of
a sudden, expectations had started togo up. So, yeah, now
we're facing some bad teams like theGiants in Tampa Bay. There should be
some wins that we can rack uphere get ourselves a playoffs spot. In
the first year of Jordan Love, things were looking up, things were looking
(16:07):
up. And now two short weekslater, we're sitting here with the Packers
outside of the playoff picture, needingto win out and maybe get some help
if they're going to get the playoffs. We're talking about firing the defensive coordinator.
(16:32):
Matt Lafleur was asked about the potentialto fire Joe Berry after the atrocious
performance against Tampa Bay earlier this week. Here's what he had to say.
Is Joe going to remain your DC, your play caller for the rest of
the season. Yeah, that's hisplan. Why do you think he puts
(16:52):
your defense in the best position towin these couple games. Well, like
I said, I mean, thisis not If I thought that that was
the best solution today, then we'dmake that decision. But when you're having
basic communication problems and you're supposed tobe in a certain coverage or a certain
(17:17):
rotation and we're not getting that communication, that's what's so disappointing to me is
the fact that it was just itwas poor communication. And it always starts
with us. I mean as itstarts with myself and then it goes to
all our assistant coaches. So obviouslythe coaching wasn't up to the standard.
And then our performance on the field, so the coaching wasn't up to the
(17:42):
standard. Matt Lafleur, there werebasic communication problems, basic basic communication problems
that they were not able to figureout this late into the season, and
Matt Lafleoor sees all of that andit's like, no, a change at
(18:03):
defensive coordinator is not a solution tothis. He's looking for the best solution.
But yet everything he described that theproblem was all falls at the feet
of Joe Berry. If there's alack of communication on defense. Who's in
charge of that, Joe Berry? If the performance is enough to standard because
(18:30):
of the lack of basic communication, basic Joe Berry still hasn't instilled basic communication
ability in his defense. Who doesthat fall to Joe Berry? But Matt
Lafleur is going to stand up thereand say that firing Joe Berry would not
(18:52):
be a solution. It would notbe the best solution to fix these problems,
even though Joe Berry is the reasonthese problems exist. It's so tiring
to do this nearly every single year. We did this last year with Joe
(19:15):
Berry. Matt Lafleur stuck with him, and now we're doing it again.
It's these basic issues that Matt Lafleureven says, so, yeah, that's
the most disappointing part. It's basiccommunication that the coaches failed at. Joe
(19:41):
Berry is the coordinator of the defense. If he cannot coordinate some basic communication,
he should not be in charge ofcoordinating the defense. It's that simple.
And look, maybe at the endof the year, Barry will get
fired and they'll find another DC andthey're you know, what's the point in
(20:03):
changing up for the last couple ofweeks. Maybe that's his position on it.
Well, I don't know, man. I mean, you look at
the offensive coordinator situation in Buffalo. They were struggling, They fired their offensive
coordinator, put a new guy inthere, and what do you know,
Buffalo has looked a lot better eversince. Sometimes a mid season change at
(20:26):
a coaching spot can't help. Itreally can't. Sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes
it does. It'll get those guyswoken up. Maybe Joe Barry's lost the
locker room. Who knows, We'renot in there. But based on what
(20:48):
we've seen from Devondre Campbell on Twitter, a bunch of these other Packers players
taking to Twitter, Oh it doesn'tsound good in there, man, because
if things were good, those guyswould not be taking to Twitter to vent
their frustrations, to be talking aboutall this. If things were good,
(21:11):
that would not happen. But it'shappening. So what does that tell you?
And now this Carolina game is here, and I'll tell you what.
Matt Lafleur may not intend on firingJoe Berry until after the season is over,
(21:32):
but if the Packers lose to theCarolina Panthers, if Bryce Young somehow
puts up twenty plus whatever points onthis defense, Matt Lafleur, you have
no choice but to fire Joe Berry. Joe Barry can't be allowed back on
the team plane if that were tohappen. Carolina is two and twelve.
(22:00):
They have been awful all season. If you lose this game because your defense
gets torched for a third week ina row, you have no choice.
You have to fire Joe Berry. If that happens. You cannot go into
(22:22):
the final two weeks of the seasonagainst the Vikings and the Bears with Joe
Barry as your DC coming off threestraight losses to the Giants, the Buccaneers,
and the Panthers. You can't doit. Granted, this is all
an if. We don't know whatwill happen in the game on Sunday yet
(22:45):
as you're listening to this, Butif that were to happen, I mean,
we looked at the Giants and theBuccaneers as yeah, these should be
games that the Packers should easily win. We can say the same thing looking
at the Panthers. They should easilywin this keyword should, and as it
(23:07):
happened last couple of weeks. SoI am not as confident in the Packers
winning against Carolina, as I wouldhave been a couple of weeks ago.
It is a sad state of thePackers' defense, which it has been for
a while. To be honest, once again, the Packers may soon be
(23:29):
on a search for a defensive coordinator, and the sooner that search begins,
the better. Coming up, We'lltalk a little Wisconsin Badgers. As National
signing Day came and went, transferportal continues and we get ready for the
bowl game they relya Quest Bowl. You're listening to Sports on Deck with Dave
Gasper here on thirteen ten, wI b a Sports on Deck with Dave
(24:06):
Gasper rolls on here on a Saturdayafternoon. Signed, sealed, delivered is
the Wisconsin Badgers class of twenty twentyfour recruits. Twenty two different players signed
their national letters of intent on Wednesdayto officially become Wisconsin Badgers heading into the
(24:29):
twenty twenty four season, and itwas a very strong recruiting class. The
first one four head coach Luke Fickle. Now, obviously he had the class
of twenty twenty three shortly after gettinghired. He had to kind of cobble
it together. There was a lotof Paul Christ recruits, some decommits,
some guys he had to get torecommit, some guys he brought over from
his commitment class in Cincinnati and kindof cobbled together a couple of guys,
(24:56):
but it wasn't overall a great classlast but there's only so much that he
could do. But this is thefirst full recruiting cycle Luke Fickle has had
as the head coach at Wisconsin, and he's brought in a lot of a
lot of great players, some fourstars, eleven four stars, depending on
(25:18):
which recruiting service you look at,and there's a lot of different ones out
there. You got ESPN, yougot Rivals, you have twenty four to
seven sports, but overall, topto bottom, a strong class, a
consensus top twenty five class in theentire country. That's a pretty good start
(25:40):
for Luke Fickle. And they addressneeds all over the field. They got
someone at every position really accepts specialteams, so they didn't get any specialists,
no kickers, punters, long snappersor anything like that. They did
get a long snapper in the transferportal, but that's it, and they
(26:02):
don't really have needs at those positions, but they have needs elsewhere, So
twenty two scholarship athletes signed on Wednesday. I want to start on the offensive
side of the ball. Quarterback.Maybe Motoyer is kind of the headliner of
the class in terms of the factthat he's a quarterback, A four star
(26:26):
quarterback from Texas from the Woodlands HighSchool, six foot five, big size,
two fifteen, very talented quarterback, could be the quarterback of the future
for Wisconsin. They do have Tylervan Dyke, the transfer, coming in
for his final season of eligibility forthis next year. You have Braden Locke,
(26:48):
who played quite a bit this pastseason, and then you've got a
whole bunch of guys with pretty muchno experience. Nick Evers, you got
Mtoyer, you got Cole to Crewegot a lot of different places you could
go in that quarterback room. Asfor who takes it over in twenty twenty
(27:15):
five, that's going to be quitethe competition. I'm sure Tyler Van Dyke
has a position in twenty twenty four. That job is pretty much his.
But Matoyer comes in and he helpedrecruit a lot of the other guys in
this class, and really the bigpositions that Wisconsin got signees at are running
(27:41):
back an offensive line. Luke Fickel, in his press conference on National Signing
Day, said that running back wasthe most important position for the coaching staff
to address in this recruiting cycle. The most important position, even with the
(28:02):
air raid offensive Phil Longo, runningback is so incredibly important at Wisconsin brayln
Allen heading to the NFL. ChessMalucy, we found out is returning for
another season. He was able toget another year of eligibility. So Chess
Malucy will be back. That isgreat news to hear. And he will
(28:23):
be joined by three true freshmen inthat running back room. Four star running
back Darrion Dupree from Mount Carmel HighSchool in Illinois. Then you got Dylan
Dylan Jones out of Maryland, anotherfour star running back. Then you got
(28:44):
Gideon ATUCA, three star running back. Both those guys out of Maryland.
These are some talented backs. Imean, this goes from a backfield that
was lacking depth to now a verydeep backfield, the kind of backfield that
we used to see Wisconsin always have. Remember when Wisconsin had Monte Ball and
(29:08):
then James White. It's like,oh man, we got these two great
backs, all right, now we'vewe've run for three hundred yards in this
in this uh in this game againstNebraska. Let's throw in our third stringer.
What's his name? Oh yeah,Melvin Gordon. Like they always just
(29:29):
had guys coming out of their earsin that backfield, and they didn't really
have that this past year. ChessMalussy got hurt, Brayln Allen was always
kind of banked up, and youwere looking at Jackson Acre and Katie Akamelli
in that backfield. Didn't really havethe explosion that you were used to watching
(29:52):
Wisconsin football. So they get thoseguys in there that is really going to
remake I'm very excited for this runningback room. All these are different types
of players, did different kinds ofrunning backs, so they're going to bring
something different to the offense, everysingle one of them. An offensive line.
Five offensive linemen in this class. The Badgers really adding more depth and
(30:22):
again a very important position for Wisconsin. It's always been an important position.
Wisconsin is an offensive lineman factory.Tanner Borderlini heading to the NFL, Trey
Weddigg heading to the transfer portal. You got some openings there, You got
some depth problems on that offensive linebut now you get five guys coming in
(30:44):
there. You got Emerson Mandel,Derek Jensen, Kevin Haywood, four stars
right there, Colin Coverly, RyanCorey, five offensive linemen. They got
a couple of these guys from pennState territory. Kevin Haywood out of Pennsylvania
(31:10):
six seven two ninety getting him fromPennsylvania, Ryan Cory also from Pennsylvania.
These guys had big time offers andWisconsin grabbed him. Just an absolutely huge
coup for Luke Fickle in his firstrecruiting cycle. So that's the big stuff
(31:37):
on the offensive side. Defensively, they picked up a big commitment on signing
day, Ernest Willer, sixty eighthranked player in the ESPN three hundred,
highest ranked player in the class forWisconsin. He was the highest ranked uncommit
(32:00):
player heading into National signing Day.All of a sudden, a few days
before, he narrows it down toWisconsin and Maryland as his two schools.
Everyone was predicting Wisconsin, and sureenough, Ernest Willer picked Wisconsin. Do
you know who? He picked?Wisconsin over Ohio State, Michigan, Alabama,
(32:22):
Georgia. He had picked Wisconsin overall those schools that have been in
the College Football Playoff in recent years. Notre Dame offered him. He chose
the Badgers. He chose coach Fickle, he chose coach Scruggs. He chose
(32:44):
Madison. Wisconsin's recruiting class ranking gota massive boost after getting Ernest Willer.
And defensive line is one of thebiggest needs for Wisconsin. It's been one
of the biggest needs in a transferportal. They've lost some guys to graduation.
It was not a very strong groupthis past year. They've needed more
(33:07):
help there. Ernest Willer could playhis freshman season, he could maybe earn
a starting job. So it isa huge coup for Luke Fickle to get
Ernest Willer to sign. We'll seewhat else happens with the transfer portal and
(33:29):
the defensive line, but a hugeaddition there along with Dylan Johnson and Hank
Weber on the d line. Alsoon the defensive side, you got a
bunch of big athletes in the secondary. Raphael Done six foot four to two
(33:50):
hundred, could be a safety, could be a corner, could be a
linebacker, just listed as a defensiveathlete. Xavier Lucas six foot one,
corner, got some size there.Amelio Agard was their highest ranked player before
(34:12):
Ernest Willer. He's been undersized atfive ten, but dude can ball.
This is a massive class for Wisconsintwenty two commits. This first season under
Luke Fickle was a disappointment to mostbecause expectations were incredibly high and they went
(34:37):
seven to five. They didn't liveup to the expectations. There were a
lot of deficiencies on this team thatweren't entirely Luke Fickle's fault. A lot
of it was a lack of recruitmentin recent years under Paul christ you missed
a cycle or two and that canreally put you in a bad spot.
(34:59):
And that's what happened Paul Chris, and that's what cost him his job.
Now Luke Fickle attacking recruiting hard, got a fantastic class and now I think
we're really going to get a chanceto see what a Luke Fickle Badger's team
(35:20):
can look like because he is bringingin his guys now that are better fits
for what he wants to do withthis team offensively and defensively. Phil Longo
is getting more of his guys. You see Tim Murray, DK and Skyler
Bell and Keantes Lewis transfer out. Those were the receivers Wisconsin had, They
(35:42):
weren't necessarily the receivers Wisconsin needed inPhil Longo's offense. Again, this is
nothing against those guys at all.Great guys, great players. Tim Murray
DK, I've already seen he's transferredto Florida. He's going to rejoin Graham
Mertz down there. Congratulations to him, Very happy for him. But now
(36:07):
this coaching staff can start to getthe personnel they've recruited, they've wanted to
bring in, the guys that fittheir needs, the best, what they
want to see in their players, the best they can bring them in now
and where we're probably going to beseeing a lot of these guys early on
in their freshman season. There isopportunity all over this roster, and these
(36:30):
are some very talented players that couldvery quickly earn themselves some playing time.
Coming up, we'll wrap things upwith a few spare thoughts. You're listening
to Sports on Deck with Dave Gasperhere on thirteen to ten WIBA and when
sadun back, just a few moreminutes left with you on the Sports on
(37:08):
Deck with Dave Gasper here on thirteento ten WIBA. I am Dave Gasper.
Follow me on Twitter at de Gaspertwenty four. I'll tell you what
with the Brewers making this trade ofAdrian Hawser and Tyrone Taylor, shipping them
both out for a guy who's noteven going to contribute this next season,
(37:32):
Here's what's left on Milwaukee's to dolist this offseason. Number one address first
base. You cannot go into theseason with Jake Bowers as your top first
baseman. You can't. You cannotdo it. And look me in the
eye and tell me that the Brewersintend to compete. Jake Bowers is awful.
(38:00):
He has been off all his entirecareer. Expecting him to all of
a sudden be good now is justnot going to happen. So you have
to get some help there. Firstbase, you need someone at DH right
now. It's like, well,we could put Yelich there or Contraras.
Sometimes that's about it. First baseDH, you need at least one,
(38:24):
preferably two, more starting pitchers. Those are your top three remaining needs.
You could always get a couple ofoptionable bullpen arms. Can't go wrong there.
I don't think they're going to addressthird base. I think the plan
at third base is to leave itopen for Tyler Black, similar to what
(38:47):
they did last year when they tradedaway Colton Wong to open up second base
for Bryce Terrang. The plan,I believe is to leave third base open
for Tyler Black. Matt Arnold, unprompted, said Black was in the mix
for opening day at third base alongwith Andrew Monasterio. Tyler Black is obviously
(39:14):
the future at that position, notMonasterio. Still, you could get a
bridge guy. You could get aveteran Big leaguer to help fill in that
gap, get some playing time, similar to what they did with Brian Anderson
this past year until Craig Council lostall interest in playing Brian Anderson down the
(39:35):
stretch. But I think the Bergersmay just leave third base open and let
Tyler Black take the reins first base, though, you need some help.
You need some help in one ofthose corner spots. Tyler Black could play
either corner spot. I think theplan is for him at third base.
Initially he could play some first, but then that means you got to get
(39:57):
somebody for third, So you gotto ge one corner infielder somewhere Carlos Santana
would be fine. Just please, please, for my own sanity, for
everybody's own sanity, do not gointo the season with Jake Bowers as you're
projected starting first baseman. Please donot do that. For all these years
(40:23):
of watching this team, for allthe guys that we have seen the Brewers
put at first base since Prince Fielderleft, Jake Bowers would be the absolute
worst. Give me Mark Reynolds, give me Adam Lynd. Give me the
