You were listening to Sports on Deckwith Dave Gasper. Welcome into Sports on
Deck with Dave Gasper here on thirteenten WIBA. I am Dave Gasper.
Of course you can follow me onTwitter at de Gasper. Twenty four we
got a loaded show coming up foryou today. It is the end of
(00:30):
the year, so we got totalk about some wild things that have happened.
We've got the top five wildest thingsthat happened in the world of Wisconsin
sports this year that is coming uplater on in the show. And also
while we look back on the yearthat was twenty twenty three, we've also
got to look ahead to the yearthat is going to be in twenty twenty
(00:51):
four, so we'll also be talkingabout that five things to look forward to
in twenty twenty four in Wisconsin sports. There's a lot of things. I'm
very excited about it. But rightnow, before we get into any of
that, in the year ahead,in the year that was, Jay R
Alexander has made himself the talk ofthe state of Wisconsin this past week because
(01:17):
JayR Alexander has been suspended by theGreen Bay Packers, not by the league.
It's not like he had some sortof unnecessary roughness hit that the league
said, hey man, you gottastop doing that is none of that.
No, jay R Alexander got suspendedby the Packers because he made himself a
(01:38):
captain ahead of the game against Carolina. He just went out there. He
was not supposed to be a captain. He was not supposed to go out
for the coin toss. He didanyways, and then he did the talking,
and then he nearly screwed up thecoin toss. He did call tails,
and they did win the coin toss, and then the referee a asks
(02:00):
what do you want to do?And he made the mistake of saying,
we want to go on defense. Now, there's always technicalities. You're supposed
to say defer, defer your choiceas the second half, or you want
to receive. The Packers wanted todefer, and JayR said we want to
go on defense, which is atechnical difference. Luckily, the referee double
(02:25):
checked said do you mean defer?Yeah, I guess so, and so
luckily nothing too bad came of it. But still Matt Lafleur is a little
upset naturally, so he wasn't supposedto be out there, and then he
(02:46):
nearly screws it up that he doesn'teven play a great game either on top
of all of it, So JaiYar's in some trouble. After the game,
Jaiyir talks to the reporters, andhe really didn't seem too worried about
(03:07):
the whole thing. Listen to this, So, were you supposed to be
a captain? Yeah, I mean, you know, it's only suitan.
You know, I don't think coachknew I was from Charlotte, you know,
So, so you just did thaton your own. I mean,
I mean, you know, Imean it was like a you know,
the guys backed me up, youknow, so they may knew a lot
from here. Did you realize healmost made a big mistake on the call
(03:29):
though? What I do? Well, you said we want to go on
defense, Yeah, which in theorycould if they could have said, then
you're electing to kick to kick offwhat you have lost the opportunity then to
receive in the second half. Yeah. No, I told him that.
I said, I want I wantour defense to beyond there, and they
all looked at him like I wascrazy. I'm like, I mean,
(03:50):
it's pretty simple when I say it, like I want the defense behind him.
They're like, you mean defer.I'm like, yeah, I guess
yeah. Everybody was lating. I'mlike, we got Labin. Then it's
pretty obvious. So did anyone sayanything to you when you got back to
the side line? Oh, Jayir, Uh, it's pretty obvious. What
(04:12):
I'm asking for it? Dude, you have been in the league long enough
to know the difference. Jaiir hasbeen a captain before. This is not
his first time being a captain. He really wasn't a captain, but still,
this is not This is not hisfirst time going out for a coin
toss. He should know the differencebetween defer and we want to we want
(04:40):
our defense to be out there onthe field. He should know the difference.
He has been around the league severalyears. He knows how it goes.
The fact that he that he didthis is ridiculous. He has no
regrets about it whatsoever, at leastnot there he did. I'm sure he
(05:02):
does now after Matt Laflure has suspendedhim. But there's something weird going on
here with this because Jayeir knows better. He should know better. He's a
smart guy. He's a smarter playerthan this. Why he did this,
(05:25):
I don't know, but Matt Lafleure, in talking about the suspension, said
that it's never just one thing whenit comes to suspending a player like they
did for Jayeir, It's never justfor one thing. So while the coin
toss incident was one very big thing, that alludes to the fact that there
(05:46):
are other things going on behind thescenes that we are not aware of.
Jaire did not play for several weekswith an injury. He was not put
on IR. They expected he wouldbe back sooner. He was not.
Maybe that's part of it. There'sother things potentially going on in that locker
room that we are not aware ofthat they are not going to tell us
(06:12):
any sort of details about. Thatalso could be a contributing factor. But
either way, things have risen.Intentions have risen to the level of the
Packers having to suspend JayR Alexander fora massive game. There are two games
left. The Packers can get eliminatedthis week if they lose. They need
(06:38):
a couple other outcomes to go acertain way in order for that to happen,
but they can get eliminated from playoffcontention if they lose this week.
Even If they don't get eliminated thisweek, their path to making the playoffs
will be incredibly difficult. They wouldneed a win against the Bears plus several
other things if that were to happen. This is a massive game and JayR
(07:03):
Alexander is a player that makes thisteam better when he's out on the field.
Coin toss incidents aside Jai Year playingmeans the Packers are a better team.
And the Packers are still opting togo into this game without the highest
(07:24):
paid cornerback in the league because heneeds to be disciplined for things that have
been going on. It's such aridiculous state of affairs right now for Green
Bay. They are fighting for theirplayoff lives. They nearly blew it against
(07:49):
Carolina. Carolina, the worst teamin the league. Joe Berry's defense needed
twenty seconds to blow that game, blow that lead. Luckily, there were
only nineteen seconds left on the clockfor Carolina, but man, that was
(08:11):
getting close. Packers are up bytwo possessions and Carolina is able to come
back and tie the game. Ittakes a two minute drive from Jordan Love
to get down into field goal rangeand get a field goal with twenty seconds
left. It took a miracle toget out of there with a win.
(08:33):
The defense could not stop giving uppoints to the lowest scoring offense in the
league. The Carolina Panthers had notscored an offensive touchdown in nine quarters nine
quarters. They had three in threeand a half quarters against Joe Berry's defense.
(08:54):
And that's even with jay r Alexanderout there. Have a terrible game,
Yes, but you gotta be kiddingme. And now they're going into
this game against the Minnesota Vikings wherethe loser essentially sees their playoff hopes eliminated.
(09:20):
And they're going in without one oftheir best defensive players, even coming
off a down game, even comingoff of injuries. They're going in without
one of their best players because hehas to be disciplined by the team for
what he's done. This is dangerous. This is a dangerous game against Minnesota.
(09:41):
I'm very worried about it. Theyare at Minnesota. That's not going
to be easy with a playoff spotprobably on the line. Playing in Minnesota,
you're playing on the road against therival. Now Minnesota is starting Jaren
(10:05):
Hall, a rookie at quarterback thatcould be of some benefit to the Packers.
But then again, Joe Berry isstill the defensive coordinator, so probably
Jaren Hall is going to throw forthree hundred and fifty yards and four touchdowns
and he's going to lead the Vikingsto a massive victory, because that's just
(10:26):
how Joe Berry's defense has rolled thepast several weeks. They made Bryce Young
look good, they made Tommy DeVitolook good, they made Baker Mayfield look
like an MVP. Those are thequarterbacks that Joe Berry's defense has faced the
last three weeks, and they've alllooked good against Joe Berry's defense. And
(10:54):
now they're going in without Jayur Alexander. This is a massive game. This
is the biggest game of the seasonfor Green Bay Packers Vikings Sunday Night football
on New Year's Eve. I'm excited, but I am very, very nervous
(11:18):
at the exact same time. Comingup the top five wildest things that happened
in the world of Wisconsin sports inthe year twenty twenty three. You're listening
to Sports on Deck with Dave Gasperhere on thirteen ten WIBA Sports on Deck
(11:54):
with Dave Gasper rolls on here onyour Saturday afternoon wild thing. It's time
to talk about the wild stories ofthe year, the wild things that happened.
No, there is no Charlie Sheeninvolved in this segment, thankfully,
(12:15):
but there are some major leagues involved. But still a lot of crazy things
happened in the world of sports,a lot of wild things here in the
state of Wisconsin. So we aregoing to run down the list of the
top five wildest things that happened inthe world of sports Wisconsin this year,
(12:39):
and we're gonna start off with numberfive. Number five, Joe Berry remains
the Packers defensive coordinator. Yes,I know it still pains us every single
day that Joe Barry remains in chargeof the Packers defense. But earlier in
this year, way back in January, when Matt Lafleur decided that he was
(13:03):
going to keep Joe Berry as thedefensive coordinator despite the Packers missing out on
the playoffs last year, despite thenumerous struggles of the defense, Joe Barry
was kept on as defensive coordinator. There are plenty of other options out there
on the markets. There was therecently let go Jim Leonard I guess,
(13:24):
the former Wisconsin Badgers defensive coordinator andthen interim head coach Luke Fickle had already
been hired at Wisconsin and Jim Leonardwas going to be out. He was
not going to be returning, sohe was looking for a new job,
and hey, perhaps that's the placethat he could have gone. In said,
he's been an assistant in Illinois, and hey, you know, Jim
(13:46):
Leonard still is available, or literallyanybody else, because we have done this
again and again with Joe Berry. There have been so many mistakes and breakdowns
and just overall poor defense to play. Despite all of the investment in the
defense, all of the first roundpicks, all of the investment, they
(14:07):
still struggle as a unit every singleyear. The fact that Joe Barry was
kept around as defensive coordinator for athird season by head coach Matt Lafleur is
absolutely wild. The fact that hecontinues to stand by him through the struggles
of this team this late in theyear, through all the breakdowns and communications,
(14:31):
through all the poor play calls, through all of the putting Preston Smith
on DeVante Adams in coverage, JoeBarry has kept his job, which is
the wildest thing in the world tome. Number four. Moving on to
number four, in the wild Thingsof Wisconsin Sports. This year, Jackson
(14:56):
Surio has signed his mega extension.Yes, now we have him, or
positive thing that happened. Jacksonario hasnot made his major league debut, and
yet the Milwaukee Brewers signed him toan eight year, eighty two million dollar
contract extension guaranteed with two club optionyears after that. The entire total value
(15:18):
of the deal can go all theway up to one hundred and forty two
point five million dollars. This isall for a nineteen year old kid who
has not played in Major League baseballyet. He has six games of Triple
A experience that that is as highas he's gone six games in Triple A.
(15:39):
He spent the entire regular season inDouble A Biloxi, put up some
really good numbers after they got ridof the pre tact baseball they were working
with down there, and he isan uber prospect. He is the best
prospect the Brewers have had since RyanBrown, and he's arguably a better overall
(16:00):
prospect than Ryan Braun was at thetime, a higher rated prospect than Braun
was. So this is a bigdeal. We're looking at the Brewers potentially
losing Corbyn Burns and Willia Domas isthere a year away from free agency.
We've already seen Brandon Woodruff go outthe door with a non tender because he
(16:23):
got injured. You're looking at thecore leaving in free agency. What is
the future of this team. Thefuture of this team is Jackson Curio.
The Brewers recognize that, We recognizethat, and the Brewers decided to give
him a mega contract extension in orderto keep him in Milwaukee long term,
(16:48):
so we don't have to deal withthe potential trade rumors of oh well,
he's only got a couple years left. Man, his maximum values right now,
maybe you should trade them, tradethem while you can get Max Umber
Turned don't have to deal with anyof that, not anymore, Not with
Jackson Curio. It's too late forthe Burns and a Damis group. Those
(17:11):
guys. Those rumors are off andrunning. We'll see if they end up
sticking around. I still think theywill, but we'll see if they end
up sticking around. One thing weknow for sure, though, is at
Jackson Curio will number three. Movingon, the third wildest thing that happened
in the world of Wisconsin sports thisyear, Damian Lillard gets traded to the
(17:33):
Milwaukee Bucks. This is something thatoperated in absolute silence. We did not
know this was going to be happeninguntil all of a sudden poof there it
is. The Bucks kept this asquiet as they possibly could. Now,
Damian Lillard, we had known, wanted a trade out of Portland for a
while, and he was trying toforce his way to the Miami Heat.
(17:56):
The Portland trail Blazers said, no, we're not gonna send you to the
Miami Heat. We will send youliterally anywhere else. And they were looking
around trying to find a trade, and the Milwaukee Bucks were willing to make
that deal. They had to movea key piece from their roster, Drew
(18:17):
Holiday, in order to make thistrade happen. Holliday, he said he
wanted to remain a Buck for therest of his career. Holliday, who's
been a very good player for Milwaukee, helped them win a ring, but
they ended up having to trade himin order to get Damian Lillard. And
now Damian Lillard is a Milwaukee Buck. There was a whole there was a
(18:41):
large crowd of people waiting outside whenhe first showed up in Milwaukee after the
trade. There's so much excitement.Jannis had been talking about wanting to make
sure that the front office has thesame goal in mind as him of building
a championship roster a year in andyear out. He won to be able
to compete for an NBA title yearand and year out. That's what he
(19:06):
was talking about. He's telling thefront office, hey, guys, better
make sure we have a good rosteraround me. And then they go out
and trade for Damian Lillard. That'sexactly what you need your front office to
do. And sure enough, shortlyafter that, Giannis signed yet another contract
extension to stay with the Milwaukee Bocks, his second Max contract extension that he
(19:32):
signed as a superstar with Milwaukee. He is going to be staying around even
longer. And that's just the oddedbonus he had to benefit of the Damian
Lillard trade. That came as ashock to everybody, but everybody in Milwaukee
was loving it. It was afantastic move by John Horst and the Milwaukee
(19:56):
Bucks front office in order to getDamian lo to Milwaukee. And now they've
got Lillard and Giannis paired as twosuperstars on this team going forward for the
next several years. Along with ChrisMiddleton and a very strong rest of the
roster. Number two. Moving on, the second wildest thing that happened in
(20:18):
the world of Wisconsin sports this year, The Aaron Rodgers trade happened back in
April ahead of the NFL Draft. We all kind of knew what was coming.
This wasn't wild in the sense thatit was a total surprise, but
it's still wild everything going down inthe fact that the Packers did trade a
(20:38):
four time NFL MVP, moving onto Jordan Love and sending Rogers to the
New York Jets in exchange for reallya very good return. In the trade,
they get to swap pit They gotto swap picks in the first round
of this past year's draft, movingup two spots. They also picked up
(21:03):
what was believed to be a firstround pick in the twenty twenty four draft.
As long as Rogers played sixty fivepercent of the snaps this year,
there was there were all these concernsabout, well, what if Rogers only
plays one year. We don't wantto give up an extra first rounder for
just one year of a guy,and so there was gonna have to be
(21:25):
like there were thoughts about conditions onplaying multiple years or things like that,
but instead the Packers got it unjustsixty five percent of the of the snaps
in twenty twenty three. If hedidn't reach that, it'd be a second
rounder instead of a first. Nowalmost I think, maybe even the wildest
(21:45):
part of this entire story is thefact that four plays into the regular season,
Aaron Rodgers tours Achilles and was outfor the year, So the sixty
five percent threshold never got a chanceto get reached. He didn't even play
sixty five percent of the snap onthe first drive in the first quarter of
the regular season, so that didn'thappen. So it's gonna be a second
(22:07):
round pick for Green Bay coming backin the Rogers trade. But still,
I mean that whole trade, allthe negotiations, Rogers saying he wants out
and getting traded after the season, and moving on to Jordan Love. It
was a wild, wild time earlyon in the season. Number one,
(22:30):
And moving on to our number one. Wildest thing that happened in the world
of Wisconsin sports this year, itis none other than Benedict's Council excuse me,
Craig Council going to the Chicago Cubs. He hit free agency, and
he was going to look around andhe was going to find the biggest contract
that he could. And everyone assumedthat once he found that big contract,
(22:55):
he would go to go back tothe Brewers and be like, hey,
this is the best offer I got. Are you willing to match it?
And the Bruers would likely say yes, and then they would move forward.
But instead Craig Council found a fiveyear, forty million dollar contract offer from
the Chicago Cubs. Of all teams, the Chicago Cubs did not give the
(23:18):
Bruers a chance to match, simplytook the deal and ran, and he
left for Chicago a job that wasn'teven open. David Ross still had his
job, His name plate was stillon his office down there in Chicago,
and Craig Council went and took hisjob. There were no rumors of the
(23:42):
two sides meeting at all, andthen all of a sudden it happened,
the reports that Craig Council has madehis decision. It's imminent. All of
a sudden, the Guardians hire StevenVote, the Mets hire another guy.
Those were the two teams that weknew were interested. It seemed the Council
(24:03):
was coming back to the Brewers andall of a sudden, no, it's
not the Burgers. Well, where'she going Houston. No, it's a
place that doesn't currently have an opening. We're all like, what, how
could he do that? And thena few minutes later we find out the
(24:25):
Chicago Cubs, and in an instant, seventeen years of goodwill, seventeen years
of being a member of the Brewersorganization, being a member of the community
of the team, being from WhitefishBay, all the hometown kids stuff gone,
(24:45):
all the goodwill gone, all thelove from the fans gone. The
idea that maybe one day the Bruderswould build a statue of Council gone.
Any sort of love and or spfor Craig Council out the window in an
instant. It is the most shockingheel turn I have seen in the world
(25:11):
of sports in a long long time. Craig Council knew that this will be
a heel turn. He knew peoplewouldn't react. Well, he's still somehow
underestimated how poorly they'd react to this. He's made his bed and now he's
(25:33):
gotta line it. He's gonna haveto deal with being a pariah in his
hometown. He's going to have todeal with getting booed every time he comes
to Milwaukee for the next several years. It's going to take at least a
decade until things maybe ease up onCraig Council. The betrayal and the shock
(26:00):
of Council's bolt to the Chicago Cubsis the wildest thing that happened in the
world of Wisconsin sports this year.Coming up? What is coming up next
year though? In twenty twenty fourin the world of Wisconsin sports, we'll
get into that. You're listening toSports on Deck with Dave Gasper here on
(26:22):
thirteen ten WIBA show. Come onMedame I Love Well, Come on Sports
(26:49):
on Deck with Dave Gasper is comingto your city on this Saturday afternoon.
No, it's not college football Sunday, it's not college game Day. It's
not why you're here in coming toyour city a big and rich although it
is a fantastic song, and itis college football bowl season. Speaking of
(27:11):
the Wisconsin Badgers have their bowl gamecoming up on New Year's Day on January
first, coming up on Monday, playing against LSU and the Relyaquest Bowl coverage
right here on thirteen ten, WIBAwill begin at seven a m. With
our Badger's game day pregame show andthen kickoff at eleven o'clock. So it
(27:38):
is going to be a fun fullday of coverage coming up on New Year's
Day as Wisconsin takes on LSU.And that's one thing that we have in
twenty twenty four to look forward to. However, that did not make the
list here of the top five thingsfor us to look for in twenty twenty
(28:00):
four. There's a lot of thingscoming up in Wisconsin sports to look at,
So let's look at the top fivethings that fans should be looking for
and looking to see in this newyear. Number five coming in at number
five on the list to look forin twenty twenty four is hopefully a new
(28:25):
defensive coordinator in Green Bay. Aswe're just talking about before, it's wild
that Joe Berry is still the defensivecoordinator in Green Bay. Matt Lafleur has
said that he will not make achange in season, and that's sounding a
lot like that. At the endof the year is when they're planning to
(28:45):
make the change. Hopefully, hopefullythis time Matt Lafluor actually does make the
change and he's not gonna look atOh, well, you know, we
won those last couple of games,so Joe Berry deserves to stick around for
another year. No, no,Matt, don't do that. Get your
Berry out of there and bring ina new defensive coordinator for twenty twenty four.
(29:07):
That's what the Packers need. Sothat is coming in at number five
on this list of things to lookfor, number four. At number four,
we have the second year of theLuke Fickele era to look for this
year, and that is going tobe hopefully much much better than this first
(29:30):
year. The first year, expectationswere incredibly high for Luke Fikele turning around
a program that has needed a bitof a turnaround, and that's why they
got rid of Paul Christ. That'swhy Luke Fickle was brought in, and
his first recruiting class had to kindof cobble together the pieces of what was
left from Paul Christ's class and acouple of recruits that they could maybe bring
(29:53):
over, but it was a veryshort time period. In order to get
all that done, he brought insome transfer some worked out, some did
not, and now we're entering thesecond year of the Luke Fickle era,
and that should be going much betterthan the first. For all the complaints
about Luke Fikele going seven to fivein his first year at Wisconsin, let's
(30:18):
remember his first season at Cincinnati. They went four and eight, all right,
So it was a rough season downthere his first year as a head
coach for Cincinnati. His second yearthey went to eleven and two, So
a big turnaround. There's a bigimprovement for Luke Fickle's group from year one
(30:40):
to year two, and I thinkthere's a good reason to expect that because
now we just have a massive recruitingclass come in twenty two high school recruits,
scholarship recruits just signed on National SigningDay the other week before Christmas twenty
two big recruits. Is a toptwenty five consensus recruiting class for Wisconsin,
(31:06):
a lot of really good talent ata lot of positions. The transfer portal
is also bringing in some other experiencedplayers to fill some needs as well.
There are a lot of reasons tobe optimistic about Luke Fickles's second year at
the Helm of Wisconsin football. Therewere a lot of good things that we
saw in this first season. Therewere some struggles. Yes, there were
(31:30):
some areas of weakness that need tobe addressed. Some of that is going
to be a holdover from Paul Christ'sera, from the roster that he had
built and the several months that hewent without a recruiting coordinator. So part
of that is there. You're changingto a new offense, You're changing defensive
(31:52):
schemes as well, so there's goingto be a bit of a transition period.
We went through that and Wisconsin's illended up with a bowl game,
a New Year's Day bowl game, the formerly known as the Outback Bowl will
rely Aquest Bowl. It's a prettygood outcome. They got back the Axe,
(32:14):
which is probably the most important thingof this season, getting back the
Axe and making a bowl game. But this second year, now with a
full recruiting cycle under his belt,Luke Fickle's own guys, his recruits that
(32:34):
he had gone after this entire time, are coming in. He sees the
needs and weaknesses of this roster andhe's addressing them and he's getting guys that
will fit his system and fit whathe needs on this team to be successful.
He's done it before, where youhave a down record that first year
(32:59):
and then he won eleven games thenext year, and now with the College
Football Playoff expanding to twelve teams thisyear, that just makes it even more
exciting to look forward to the secondyear of the Luke Fukel era, because
this Wisconsin team will have a chanceto make the playoff. Previously not much
(33:21):
of a chance. In twenty twentyfour, they got a shot. Number
three. The number three thing tolook forward to is Jackson Curio's debut season
for the Milwaukee Brewers. As wejust talked about, he signed his mega
extension with the Brewers, and thiskid is an uber prospect and someone that
(33:45):
Brewers fans in Wisconsin sports fans shouldall be thrilled to watch him play because
in all likelihood now he's making theopening day roster. He only played six
games a triple A, he's nineteenyears old, he's good to be twenty
before opening day, but he's likelyto make that opening day roster. He's
(34:06):
likely to be a Rookie of theYear candidate. And if this kid does
what everyone believes he can do,what the Brewers believe he can do,
it's gonna be something special to watchall season and for the next eight to
ten minimum seasons to come. That'swhat we get to watch day in and
(34:32):
day out throughout the baseball season.A lot of people haven't seen him yet.
A lot of Brewers fans haven't seenhim yet. But we will.
We will see him this year.He will be in Milwaukee. He will
arrive, and it is the future. Number two. The number two thing
(34:55):
to look forward to is the renewedBrewers Cubs rival because this thing is about
to get hot and heavy, especiallybetween the fan bases. I'm not sure
how much it'll be between the players, how much it'll change. The players
are all pretty supportive of Council goingand getting his money. They all understand
the free agency aspect and trying toraise salaries for the other guys that are
(35:21):
in your same position, that doyour same job. But I don't know
if they expected him to go there. I don't know how okay they're going
to be with him going down there. The rivalry on the field, I'm
not sure how much that'll change. But the rivalry in the stands, the
rivalry from the fans perspective watching theCubs, watching Craig Council go out there
(35:44):
for handshakes or arguing with an umpire. Oh, it's gonna be something completely
different. This whole thing just steppedup a notch in heat and we all
have Craig Counsel to thank slash blamefor that. So whenever these two teams
play each other, it is goingto be tent. You could cut the
(36:07):
tension with a knife in those games. Number one and the number one thing
for us to look for in twentytwenty four in the world of Wisconsin sports
is Jordan Love's next contract. BecauseJordan Love has played quite well in his
first season at the Helm for theGreen Bay Packers and it's deserving of another
(36:31):
contract. I believe. I believeJordan Love is the guy. He has
shown enough in his ability to wingames and his ability to control the offense
and make the throws that are neededto be made that he can be the
guy going forward. So that meansyou're gonna have to pay him. And
(36:54):
coming into this year, the Packershad to make a decision on his fifty
year option is a first round pick, and they opted for a slight contract
extension guaranteeing that that fifty year optionand kind of resetting the money that he
gets slightly more guaranteed than what thefifty year option would provide, but it
(37:17):
provides also some more security for GreenBay in case things don't work out.
So now that he has played well, now that they have seen him play
and be a starter, they're goingto have to pay him. And the
going rate for quarterbacks continues to increase. I think the comp for Jordan Love's
(37:45):
next contract is going to have tobe Daniel Jones of the New York Giants.
That's going to have to be hiscontract and what his agent's going to
be looking for. That's a fouryear, one hundred and sixty million dollars
contract. It was a two yearcommitment in all reality, but still it's
(38:08):
a high average annual value that yourgames pay for a young quarterback that has
proven enough over a season to belike, Okay, let's commit to this
guy long term. The longer thatthey can spread out the money, the
better. I'm very intrigued to seehow they make this contract play out,
(38:34):
because the Packers always have their wayswith salary cap russ ball, and the
Packers' front office always has a wayof making things work out pretty well,
at least as best as can possiblybe done. Packers walls have some more
room as some dead cap money willcome off their books for next year.
(38:57):
But Jordan Love is going to geta new contract. He has played well
enough to earn one. It's justa matter of how the details are laid
out. That's a big thing tolook forward to, because that's the future
of the franchise. If for somereason the Packers don't think he's the guy,
(39:17):
he's not going to get a contract. However, everything we've seen from
him would indicate that he is thatguy and someone worth committing a contract two,
So I would expect that he's goingto get one. How it all
shakes out, we don't know yet, but I'm very excited to see what
(39:38):
it ends up looking like. Andthose are the five things we have to
look for in twenty twenty four.Coming up, we will wrap things up
