You were listening to Sports on Deckwith Dave Gasper. Welcome to Sports on
Deck with Dave Gasper. Here onthirteen to ten WIBA a very special show
today of Sports on Deck. Iam Dave Gasper. You can follow me
on Twitter at d Gasper twenty fourand we got a lot of great stuff
coming up. Coming up after thisshow, we are going to have Badger

(00:34):
basketball getting ready, Wisconsin taking onArizona, the number one team in the
country. Wisconsin is now ranked attwenty three, but they are on a
six game winning streak and they're gonnatry and take that momentum into Arizona and
come out with a win. It'sgonna be tough, but it is gonna
be a lot of fun. Tipoff there coming up just after two o'clock.

(00:56):
But before we get to that, before we get to after basketball,
coming up, we got some othersports that we got to talked about.
There's been a lot happening in theworld of sports in this past week,
namely, the Winter Meetings have beengoing on in Major League Baseball and the
Milwaukee Brewers. We're one of thebig winners of the Winter Meetings and the
fact that they announced the contract extension, the record breaking contract extension for Jackson

(01:22):
Cheerio, and they kicked off thewinter meetings with this right away on Monday.
Eight years, eighty two million dollarsguaranteed, two club options that can
take it to ten years of controlfor the Brewers over their young superstar.
Now, if you're just kind ofa casual Brewers fan and you just kind

(01:45):
of look at the major league teamand may be wondering, who is Jackson
Cheerio. I have not seen thisman play. He has not played at
the big league level yet. Hehasn't and that's why this is a record
breaking contract extension. This is themost money in the the longest term contract
given to a player that has notyet made their major league debut. Well,

(02:08):
why would the Brewers do this? Why would they give a contract extension
to a player that has not yetplayed at the big league level? And
the short answer is because this guyis going to be the best hitter we
have seen, probably since Robinnant.Just the sheer talent that Jackson Curio has

(02:32):
as a hitter is insane. Whathe is being compared to right now.
Last week on on my podcast, the Cold Brew Podcast, which you can
also find on your iHeartRadio app.By the way, I had on Brenton
del Kiaro, the Brewers Minor Leaguehitting coordinator, so he knows quite a

(02:54):
bit about Jackson Curio. And Iasked him what makes Jackson Curio so good?
And he starts telling me a storyabout when he was coaching in the
Angels system and he coached a guyby the name of Mike Trout, and
how he sees so many similarities betweenMike Trout and Jackson Churio. Mike Trout

(03:17):
is the best player in baseball, the best hitter in baseball. He has
been for the last decade. MikeTrout is a surefire Hall of Famer.
That is what Jackson Curio is beingcompared to by those who know him best.
His manager in Low A, Carolina, Victor Estevez, he compared Churio

(03:40):
to Ronald Acunya Junior, this year'sNL MVP, another guy on a Hall
of Fame track, another stud hitter. The names that Jackson Curio is in
the company of Ronald Acunya, MikeTrout, Juan Soto. These are the

(04:05):
stars of baseball, These are thesuperstars, and the Milwaukee Brewers had to
lock him up long term to keephim in Milwaukee while they could. These
negotiations have been going on since themiddle of this past season, and they

(04:25):
just now finally got it across thefinish line. And we're likely to see
Jackson Tario now on opening Day.It's not guaranteed. Pat Murphy has said
that he still needs to earn that, but I think it's highly likely that
he will. If the Brewers waitedon this, if they wait until he

(04:46):
made his debut, if they waiteduntil after his rookie season. Let's say
Chario goes out there and does whateveryone expects him to do, and he
wins Rookie of the Year, probablyyou think you're gonna be able to sign
him for eight years and only eightytwo million. No uh huh, no,
way, got tack on another zero. It's gonna be at least one

(05:11):
hundred million likely hire just un guaranteedmoney. It would not take long for
Jacksonurio to become unaffordable for the MilwaukeeBrewers if he plays the way that he
is expected to. That is whyyou have to jump in now. If
you're Matt Arnold and Mark gotten Nausioand get the deal across the finish line

(05:36):
so that you can have the costcertainty, you can get him at a
really good price. And if heturns out to what everyone believes he will
be, and there is every indicator, every sign that he will, then
you have gotten yourself an absolute stealfor the next decade. And really kind

(05:57):
of the biggest bonus of all ofit is that you can put to bed
any sort of trade speculation before itbegins. The Brewers are going through this
right now with Corbyn Burns and WILLIEA. Domas. These were young stud players
that they've had that they did notsign to contract extensions, and now they
have had to deal with trade rumorssurrounding them for a couple of years now.

(06:20):
And they may still end up havingto trade Corbyn Burns and Willie Damas.
I don't believe that they will,but they might. There's still a
possibility that they could go this offseason, and it's painful. It's painful for
everybody to have to go through that, to have to go through with trading
away a star player, one whohas been so good for your team for

(06:45):
all these years. It was sopainful and difficult to watch Brandon Woodruff gett
non tendered because he was going tomake eleven million dollars next year and he
wasn't going to pitch because he hadto have shoulder surgery. That's the only
reason he got non tendered. It'snot because of poor performance, like what
happens with most players when they getnon tendered. It is because he's hurt

(07:08):
and he's gonna miss all the nextyear and they can't afford to keep him
around when he's not gonna pitch, and you know he's gonna be a free
agent after that. So when you'regonna lose burns and a damis, do
you trade them to get some value? That's the question that you have to
be asking. That's the question thateveryone else is gonna be asking. And

(07:30):
in a few short years we wouldhave been asking the same thing about Jackson
Curio. He starts reaching arbitration, getting more expensive, and the questions are
gonna be, well, can theBerers afford to keep them? They may
have to trade them and get whatthey can for him and just get a
massive haul if they trade them,or you could just keep them for a
decade. That'd be a much smartermove. And that's the move that the

(07:57):
Brewers took, so all the complaintsabout the brus not being willing to spend,
all the complaints about the Brewers notbeing willing to make themselves competitive,
this is a move to completely disproveall of that. The Brewers are willing
to spend where it makes sense, and this absolutely makes sense. Investing in
pitchers long term is always incredibly risky. For Jackson Churio, this is an

(08:24):
incredibly smart move for the organization. The big money doesn't even kick in until
after Christian Yelch's contract comes off thebooks, and even then, Churio is
still going to be making about tenmillion dollars less than Christian Yelich's when he's
at the height of his contract whenhe gets into the club. When he

(08:46):
gets into the club options the finaltwo years that can take it all the
way to ten that's at twenty fivemillion per year, and that's still less
than what Christian Yelich is making rightnow. Yelich has at twenty six million
per year. So this is goingto be an absolute steal for Milwaukee one

(09:07):
hundred percent. All those other playersthat there have been five previous players who
have signed contract extensions prior to makingtheir MLB debut. Three of them really
have not panned out. John Singleton, Evan White, Scott Kingery, they
didn't really turn out all that well. Eloi Jimenez and Luis Robert have done
pretty well for the White Sox.They're the only reason the White Sox were

(09:30):
somewhat afloat and they didn't lose onehundred and fifty games this past year.
Man that White Sox team is awfulanyways, but Robert and Jimenez were smart
investments over there. And Surio doingthis and reaching the big leagues essentially at
nineteen years old. He's going toturn twenty before Opening Day, but doing
it at twenty years old. Thenumber of players that reached the big leagues

(09:56):
at that age is very small, and the ones who do it are quite
successful historically, because teams would notbe pushing players up that high that fast
unless they were incredibly, incredibly good. Juan Sota reached the majors at nineteen

(10:16):
years old. He just got traded. He just got sent to his third
team. He's twenty five years old. He hasn't yet hit free agency,
but he's twenty five years old. He's going to be making thirty three million
in arbitration. He's had to betraded twice because his arbitration price is going
to be too much for the teamthat he was on. The Nationals were

(10:37):
facing a rebuild. They had totrade them away for prospects. It was
incredibly painful for them to do that, but they had to. The Brewers
didn't want to end up in thatsituation with Jackson Cherio after only four years
or so, they have to tradethem away because they need to get value
and they're and they're facing a rebuild. They didn't want to have to do

(10:58):
that, so they got him lockedin long term. This is the smartest
move that the Brewers could have possiblymade. If they weren't going to invest
in the veterans like Burns, likea damis, they needed to take the
money that would have gone to themand spend it on Jackson Cherio to keep
him here long term. I've beensaying that for months, and they did.

(11:20):
They got it done. They gotit across the finish line. They
didn't wait until spring training. Theygot this done quickly, over with and
we can all move forward. JacksonCherio said, the pressure is off.
He feels ready to go. He'she's gonna work harder. He's gonna work
double to make sure that he makesthe opening day roster. It's motivating him
to work harder. Signing this contract. There's always concerns about players, Oh

(11:45):
they get the big contract, thenthey just kind of take it easy.
Not Churio. This dude has thementality, the mindset to be a successful
big league player for many, manyyears. He is going to be the
face of the franchise. You maynot have heard of him now, you
may not have seen him play yet, but you will. And when he's

(12:11):
up there in that Brewers uniform, slugging home runs, playing center field,
they're gonna absolutely love that. TheBrewers signed him to a eight year guaranteed
contract plus two club options. Butwith Surio now in the mix, that
means another outfield spot is spoken for. Brewers have a lot of outfielders.

(12:37):
What is going to happen there? We got some juicy rumors about that that
we're gonna be talking about coming up. You're listening to Sports on Deck with
Dave Gasper here on thirteen ten WIBA. Sports on Deck with Dave Gasper rolls

(13:01):
on here on thirteen ten WIBA Onyour Saturday afternoon. The Milwaukee Brewers are
working to make some improvements to theirroster before they head into next season.
With the winter meetings that just wereongoing this past week, they laid a
lot of foundations on trades that didn'tdo much outside of the Jackson Churio contract

(13:24):
extension. They re signed Wade Miley, which is great. They need some
pitching help. And they signed veteranpitcher Joe Ross to a one year deal.
Ross hasn't pitched the last two yearsbecause of injury. But you got
pitching depth. Okay, that's great. You got Miley back, you got
Joe Ross in there. Okay,we'll see if he does anything. But

(13:48):
there's a lot more work to bedone. And after the Jackson Churio contract
extension was finalized, the questions reallykind of then became, well, what
do you do with all these outfieldersbecause the Brewers are swimming and outfielders right
now. You've got Christian Yelich alreadysigned to a long term deal. He's

(14:09):
going to be here through twenty twentyeight. Jackson Churio just signed a long
term contract as well. That takesup two of your outfield spots. You
got one outfield spot remaining, andyou got sal Frelick, you got Garrett
Mitchell, Joey Weimer, not tomention, Tyrone Taylor, Blake Perkins,
and Chris Roller on the forty manroster. So you got six outfielders on

(14:33):
the forty man for one spot.Well, they'll probably carry two at least
maybe three, but that's pushing it. You got a lot of guys not
a lot of room. So thequestion becomes who do you trade? Because

(14:54):
you have a plethora of outfielders, you got no spot to play them,
and you have other needs to addresson the roster, so naturally you trade
from an area of strength to addressan area of weakness. So the reports
came out during the winter meetings thatthe Brewers were fielding trade offers on their

(15:16):
plethora of outfielders. So of theoutfielders likely to move, it's got to
be one of Joey Weimer, SellFreelick, or Garrett Mitchell because those are
the guys that are going to holdthe value. Sure, you could trade
Tyrone Taylor or Blake Perkins to clearup your outfield mix, but what are

(15:37):
they really going to get you back? Not much. Plus Blake Perkins has
options, so they can send himdown to Triple A and not worry about
it. Tyrone Taylor does not,so maybe he could go, But again,
what's he going to get you versuswhat someone like Joey Weimer or Garrett

(15:58):
Mitchell could get you. So thefocus of these trade talks is likely going
to be on one of those topthree prospects that we saw this past year.
The question is which of those threedo you trade? You gotta trade
one of them. Who's it goingto be? For me? Who I

(16:22):
would trade? Who I think ismost likely to go, I'd say is
Joey Weimer. Now, for atime I thought Garrett Mitchell might be the
guy most likely to go. Fora little bit of time there, I
thought it could be Mitchell that theytrade. The Burgers have a bunch of
left handed hitting outfielders. Mitchell andFreelich are lefties. Christian Yelich is a

(16:45):
lefty. You gotta have a righthanded hitting outfielder somewhere. Joey Weimer is
a right handed hitter, so maybehe could be the one that would stay.
But I think the addition of Jacksondoes change some things because Cheerio is
a right hander, so you canhave one right handed hitting outfielder in your

(17:07):
starting lineup and two left handed hittersand you're still fine. So the need
to make it a bit more righthanded out there is no longer there.
And between these three guys, Weamer, Mitchell, and Frelick, I think
the Birds would be more apt toget rid of Weimer because he is a

(17:30):
fourth round pick. To be honest, not entirely, but fourth rounder is
part of it. Because Mitchell andFrelick were both first rounders. They were
counting on Mitchell and Freelick to bebig pieces of the future. They drafted
him in the first round. Theyhave a lot of love for these two
guys, not saying that they don'thave a lot of love for Weimer,

(17:52):
but it's different. The investment inMitchell and Frelick has been there. And
even though Mitchell he missed most ofthis past season with injury tearing up his
shoulder, we've only seen him forabout one hundred and thirty at bats.
I think what we've seen from himin that time has been excellent. I

(18:15):
think it's everything that we've been expectingto see, and I think seeing a
fully healthy Garrett Mitchell is a superstarI honestly believe Mitchell has the superstar qualities.
He may not be a Churio levelsuperstar, but he's a star.
With what Mitchell can do for thisoffense. He provides a spark every single

(18:37):
time that he's out there. Youcan see it watching the game. That's
what he brings. Joey Weimer, they didn't make that kind of investment with
him. He was a fourth rounder. He didn't have great college numbers.
He needed to make some adjustments, and to his credit, he did and
he turned into a really good prospectwho never really struggled at any point in

(18:59):
mind leagues. Then he got tothe major leagues and he struggled pretty bad.
There are a lot of questions aboutJoey Weimer's hit tool. I don't
know if he's going to be ableto hit enough even at his best.
You're hoping for maybe two forty outof Joey Weimer, two forty two to

(19:21):
fifty at best. He's a powertype guy, so if he hits two
forty two to fifty, he canhit thirty forty bombs a year. But
we didn't see him make enough contact. And when he was making contact,
there wasn't a lot of it inthe air. He didn't have that many
home runs for a guy who wasplaying pretty much every single day most of

(19:42):
the season. The power is hiscarrying tool, but you have to be
able to hit enough to tap intoit, otherwise it's not going to matter.
That's why Rowdy Tellez got non tenderedthis past season, because he was
not hitting enough to tap into hisforty home run raw power. He ended

(20:03):
up with only what thirteen Where's thevalue in that? So Weimer, I
think the Brewers might feel like they'replaying with house money with him. He
blew up into this top one hundredprospect with a ton of value that they
weren't really expecting to have happen. They weren't expecting him to be this kind

(20:25):
of a player. They weren't expectinghim to have all this value. So
I think what the Brewers can dohere is cash in while the value is
still there because okay, it's hisrookie season. You can sell that he
can turn things around rookie year. You know rough adjustment. Everyone has that,
and he's gonna end up being justfine. You can sell that to

(20:49):
another team. But if you keephim into this next year and he continues
to struggle, his value is goingdown the tank. You're not gonna be
able to get much for him.Weimer now still has plenty of trade value.
He can get you some help inother areas of the roster, whether
it be pitching or corner infield. He can get you some legitimate help there.

(21:15):
But if you wait, like theBrewers did with Keston Hira, you're
gonna end up getting pretty much nothingfor him. In the case to Keston
Hero they did get nothing for him. They have to trade somebody. I
think it's gonna be Weimer. Itvery well could be Garrett Mitchell, It

(21:37):
very well could be I don't thinkit's gonna be south Frelick, though I
don't think Southfrilick is going anywhere. He had the best debut of any of
those rookies this past year in theoutfield, and just his hit tool is
much closer to a guarantee than Mitchellor Weimer's. It just is. Even

(22:03):
though Freelick may not have the powerpotential of Mitchell or Weimer, he's got
the ability to just make contact andget on base, and a guy like
that is a guy you want tokeep on your roster. So Freelick I
think for sure is staying. I'msure teams are gonna ask about him,
and Frelick would probably bring back thebiggest Hall. But I don't think the

(22:27):
Bergers are gonna part with him.I think they're gonna part with either Mitchell
or Weimer, and I think it'sgonna be Weimer just because Weamer. They
weren't planning on him being like this. They aren't invested in him like they've
been invested in Mitchell. Mitchell wasthe first one to get the call up
in twenty twenty two. He wasthe first one. The Brewers love Garrett

(22:52):
Mitchell. They love him. Theythink he's got the star quality as well.
I think that's the guy that they'regoing to end up keeping. Jackson
Curio's presence in the starting lineup meansthat Weamer's right handed bat is no longer
a necessity to balance out the majorityleft handed hitting outfielders the Brewers have.

(23:17):
So I think that's who you trade. I think you traded Joey Weimer and
you get some value either on thepitching staff or in the corner endfield,
or maybe both. Five years ofcontrol over Joey Weimer is quite a bit
that's got quite some value to it. Other teams are going to love his

(23:41):
power potential, and they're going tobelieve that he's made the changes necessary to
be a successful hitter. Now.I do believe that Weamer has made some
changes that's going to allow him tohit the curveball, because he did struggle
with the curve ball quite a bitthis past season. He made some changes
on his late season demotion, andhe should be ready to go for twenty

(24:06):
twenty four, and it should bea much better season his second year,
now that he's had some time toadjust to how the league adjusted to him.
But until we see it with thathit tool, I'm not entirely sold.
And I think the Brewers would bewise to sell high on Joey Weimer

(24:26):
while they can. You gotta tradesomebody from this outfield. You can't have
Yelich and Churio and Weimer and Mitchelland Frelich and Tyrone Taylor on the major
league roster in the outfield. It'stoo many guys. Someone's got to go.
You got too many other needs elsewhere. This is your area of strength.

(24:52):
Deal from it to address an areaof weakness. Matt Arnold can say
well, well, these things willwork themselves out, as they always do.
All he wants he can publicly posturelike that, being like, oh,
well, you know we don't haveto trade them, and you know
it'll all play self out. Guysget hurt, guys need to step up.
And yes, that's true. I'mnot saying you need to decimate the

(25:14):
outfield depth here, but with theroster needs and the fact that the Brews
are not going to be spending themoney in free agency to get the upgrades
they need at those positions, thatmeans they're going to have to trade in
order to get it done, andthis is where their most valuable assets are

(25:36):
on the trade markets. We'll seewho ends up going. It could happen
soon, it could happen next month. But we're gonna be seeing one of
these outfielders move. I don't thinkit's gonna be freel like. I think
he's staying put. It could beeither Garrett Mitchell or Joey Weimer, but

(26:00):
I'm leaning towards Joey Weimer being theoutfielder on the move. Coming up.
The Milwaukee Brewers have won the lotterysort of, not really, they weren't
actually in it. But they wonas much as they could have. We'll
talk about that coming up next. You're listening to Sports on Deck with Dave
Gasper here on thirteen ten WIBA.What have you done a little sister?

(26:27):
Who's the Sports on Deck with DaveGasper rolls on here on your Saturday afternoon
coming up, and just a bitwith sconsin Badger basketball pre game with Matt

(26:48):
leape and as Badgers gets it totake on the Arizona Wildcats. Tip off
there is coming up just after twoo'clock, so right after the show is
done, we'll send it off toLapey and Arizona and that game is going
to be very exciting. And thenafter the game, I will be back
here as well, and I'll bedoing the Jank Security Solutions Basketball postgame show

(27:11):
with Nick bruce Witz right here onthe station thirteen ten WIBA. So that's
going to be a lot of fun. Hopefully we're talking about a seventh straight
Wisconsin Badger victory and they would beover the number one team in the nation.
So that's coming up. We'll getmore into that a little bit later.
But first, as I was sayingbefore we came back in here,

(27:34):
the Brewers won the lottery sort of. How may you ask? So?
The MLB Draft lottery was at theWinter meetings this past week. It was
Tuesday night and the Milwakee Brewers werecurrently sitting at the twentieth pick, and
because they had made the playoffs, even though they got eliminated without winning a

(27:56):
game in the playoffs, they werein eligible to win the lottery. And
this year's lottery was chaotic. Winningthe draft lottery was the Cleveland Guardians.
They moved up from the ninth spotto the number one overall pick. The
Cincinnati Reds, an n NOL Centralrival, they moved up from fourteenth up

(28:18):
to the number two pick in nextyear's draft. Crazy crazy, the odds
of the lottery, the chances thatthey had to move up, and they
were able to do it. Sothat meant a couple of things, because
the Brewers were sitting there and theyhad the opportunity to move up three spots.
How may you ask, Well, here's how the New York Mets,

(28:45):
New York Yankees, and San DiegoPadres all spent way too much money this
past season. They were over thesecond level of the luxury text. There
is no salary cap in baseball, but there is a luxury tax and there's
levels to it. First level, second level, third level, and the
Steve Cohen level, all with differingpenalties. The higher levels you go up,
the more the penalties are. Afterthe second level, your penalty is

(29:11):
your top draft pick gets pushed downten spots in the draft order. So
if your first pick is set tobe fifteenth, it's now twenty fifth,
right, that's they push it backas part of the penalties there. Well,
those three teams, the Mets,Yankees, and Padres all surpassed the

(29:32):
second level of the luxury tax,and all three were ahead of the Brewers
in the draft order. They allmissed the playoffs, so unless they won
a top six lottery pick, theirselection would be moved back ten spots.
The Yankees and Padres, they wereat fifteenth and sixteenth. Their odds were

(29:55):
slim anyways, but they get movedback ten spots. That's behind the Brewers,
So them being moved back allows theBurgers to slide up right. The
big question mark was the Mets. The Mets had the seventh best odds for

(30:15):
the number one pick. That meantthat they had a pretty good chance of
winning a top six selection. Ifthey want a top six selection, they
would not be moved back. Theirnext pick would have been moved back,
which didn't help the Birds at all. They're sitting there were pretty good odds,
but they needed to not win andhave at least one other team jumped

(30:38):
them and win a top six lotterypick, which happened. Actually, two
teams jumped them, as I justmentioned the Guardians and the Reds. They
jumped from ninth and fourteenth up toone and two, which pushes everyone else
back in those top six picks. The same Lewis Cardinals had the fifth best

(31:00):
odds and they did not win alottery pick. They were the first team
to miss out. They had theseventh overall pick. So because two teams
jumped the Mets, the mets firstpick got pushed back to ninth, which
meant that it gets pushed back anotherten spots to nineteenth. And because all

(31:22):
those other teams already got pushed backthe Yankees and the Padres, the Brewis
continue to move up and they areahead of the Mets. So the Brewers
and the Rays jumped up three spots. The Brewers are now picking seventeenth in
the MLB draft last year. Thispast year they picked eighteenth in the draft

(31:48):
after missing the playoffs. This year, they make the playoffs and they end
up with a higher draft pick, which is insane to me. But that's
the lottery, and that's three teamsspending a whole bunch of money to go
nowhere. Essentially, it's a lotof money spent by those teams to have
really really bad seasons. It reallywas. But hey, that's their problem,

(32:14):
not ours. So the Brewers getthe benefit. Now you may be
asking yourself, well, what's thebenefit of this, Well, imagine the
Packers, because you know, theNFL draft is certainly a lot more notable.
Everyone knows a whole lot more aboutit. It's a much bigger event.
Imagine the Packers just getting their firstround pick, moved up three spots

(32:37):
for essentially no reason. They don'thave to give up any players, they
don't have to give up any otherdraft picks. They're not intentionally trading to
move up. They just get giventhe opportunity to move up. It's like,
here you go, You're moving upthree spots. You'd be like,
oh, well, thank you verymuch. Got it for nothing, essentially,

(32:59):
And here's the thing, also withthe Major League Baseball draft, it's
about the bonus pool, all right. As much as it is about the
pick and moving up a couple spotsearlier to maybe get a guy who wouldn't
have lasted there, it is aboutthe extra bonus pool money because there are
slot values for each of those picksin the top rounds, and you total

(33:22):
all that up and that's your bonuspool. Last year, the Brewers spent
every dime of their pool. Theystretched every dollar they could. You can
go a maximum of five percent overyour bonus pool without suffering penalties. The
Brewers went four point percent over. They were twenty nine dollars shy of hitting

(33:45):
the five percent overage. Twenty ninedollars They could have maybe bought a toaster
and that be it. They spenteverything that they could possibly spend on that
draft class. I know it's afantastic draft, it really was. So
moving up three spots in the firstround of they will be draft that is

(34:07):
going to net the Brewers and extrafour hundred and twenty three thousand dollars in
bonus pool money. When you includethe five percent overage, that's about four
hundred and forty four hundred and fortyfive thousand in extra available money that they
can spend. That's the equivalent valueof a fifth round pick. Again,

(34:29):
to use a comparison, imagine thePackers in the NFL Draft just being given
an extra fifth round pick for noreason. You didn't have to lose a
guy in free agency for it,you didn't have to trade for it.
You just get given an extra fifthround pick. That's essentially what happened to
the Brewers here. That's why thisthis lottery worked out so well for them.

(34:52):
They moved up as far as theypossibly could because they were not in
the lottery, but all the themaximum ways for them to move up by
other teams moving back happened. Soit was a dream scenario from Milwaukee.
In that draft lottery. They didn'teven have a representative up on the stage
because they weren't in the lottery, and they still saw their name called by

(35:15):
Brad Paisley, of all people, who was announcing the draft lottery. So
the Brewers were as big of winnersas they could beat. They were not
the big winners. The Guardians andthe Reds were the biggest winners of the
night. Obviously, the biggest losersprobably the Oakland A's and Kansas City Royals,

(35:35):
who have been tanking super hard toend up with the fourth and sixth
picks in the draft. They hadthe first and second best odds, which
is actually tied for the best oddsbut still worst and second worst record and
end up with the fourth and sixthpicks. They moved down a couple spots.

(35:58):
That's tough, but Brewers, theygot to be pretty happy. They're
drafting earlier than they were the yearbefore and they still even made the playoffs
to do it. Coming up,we'll get you set up for Badger Basketball

few minutes, Badger Basketball pregame withMatt Leapey as the twenty third ranked Wisconsin
Badgers get set to take on thenumber one ranked Arizona Wildcats. In Wisconsin
is looking to continue they're winning waysand get a seventh straight victory here today,

(37:06):
and I'm feeling good about this teamright now. Really, how we've
seen them play over these past coupleof weeks has been fantastic. Stephen Crow
has played much better aj Store, coming off a really good game against Michigan

(37:28):
State. Chucky Hepburn has looked strong. This team is playing incredibly well right
now. Arizona's got to be atleast a little bit worried about this game.
They may be the number one teamof the nation, but I don't
see how anyone could want to playWisconsin right now. The free throws have

(37:49):
gotten so much better. They havebeen playing through the paint. They have
been doing all the things that theyneed to do. This gauntlet that they
went through Marquette, then Michigan State, and now Arizona, this has been
the big gauntlet on their schedule.I was hoping for one win out of
these three. We've gotten two sofar. If they can go and get

(38:15):
the full sweep of this gauntlet, all to talk about, this team is
going to be so much different thanwhat it has been early on in the
season, what it was before theseason, all of it it's gonna change.
This is an experienced group that isreally starting to come together. And
I've said this before and I'll sayit again. Ever since the Fort Myers

(38:37):
tip Off is where things turned around. These early season tournaments around Thanksgiving is
always when this team seems to cometogether. We have those first couple of
games and they look kind of outof sync, and then they go on
these tournaments, whether it's Fort Myers, whether it's the Bahamas, whether it's
Maui, wherever it is, theygo on these tournaments and they seem to

(39:00):
just figure it out there and thenthey come back and they have it figured
out and they just keep on going. That's what it's been with this group
over the past several years, andthat's what it's been again this year.
They beat Virginia handily, and theFort Myers tip Off, they battled back
against SMU and got the win there, and ever since then they've been unstoppable.

(39:25):
They've been leading wire to wire inthese games. It's been so much
fun to watch these guys play. They're experienced and they have a lot more
depth This year. John Blackwell hascome on really strong. This is gonna
be their biggest test. Marquette wasa big test, yes, but that

(39:46):
was at the Cole Center. Thatwas with a rowdy crowd getting things going,
and that was great. That wasmuch needed, having the crowd into
it and being at home. Ithink that certainly played a fact. And
they're winning against Marquette. But you'renot gonna have that against Arizona because Arizona's
at home. They're gonna have theircrowd into it. They know how well

(40:09):
Wisconsin's been playing. They need theircrowd hyped up. It's gonna be a
tough environment for Wisconsin. But theway they've been playing, the confidence that
has been building, the confidence thisteam has, they have a really good
shot at winning this game. Thatgame is going to be coming up.
We'll turn it over to Matt Lapaye. Be sure to stick around after the

(40:30):
game for the Jank Security Solutions Basketballpostgame show with myself and Nick Brucewitz.
