You were listening to Sports on Deckwith Dave Gasper. Welcome to Sports on
Deck with Dave Gasper here on thirteento ten Wiva, I am Dave Gasper.
A busy weekend in the world ofsports, A lot to talk about
on the show today and ongoing theNFL Draft. We are up to date

(00:31):
three now of the draft. TheGreen Bay Packers several more picks to make
as they work on filling out theirroster for the upcoming season. A lot
happened in the NFL Draft. Alot has happened so far. I want
to kind of focus on the firstround here and how that all played out.
A ton of offensive players. Twentythree offensive players taken in the first

(00:56):
round, a new record. Theprevious record was nineteen off of players in
the first round. We had twentythree. The first fourteen selections were all
on offense, fourteen fourteen in arow. It's absolutely insane. Obviously,
it started off with the quarterbacks.Caleb Williams the Chicago Bears, Jane Daniels

(01:21):
to the Commanders, Drake May tothe Patriots. It all pretty much went
chalk early on. Marvin Harrison goesto the Cardinals. You know they stick
at Ford, Joe Alt to theChargers. No real surprise there. The
Giants, they bluffed quarterback. Theytook Malik Naghbors, wide receiver Tennessee Titans.
They go with the tackle JC Latham. All pretty much chalk through these

(01:45):
first seven picks, and then weget to the Atlanta Falcons. The Atlanta
Falcons said, forget chalk, whoneeds that? The Atlanta Falcons, after
having signed Kirk Cuzin to a fouryear, one hundred and eighty million dollar
contract with one hundred million dollars guaranteedjust this offseason, they draft Michael Pennix,

(02:13):
junior quarterback out of Washington at eightoverall. This was the shock pick
of the draft. And then youknow that's what everyone is telling you as
we go through this draft. Itwas absolutely absurd. The reaction over at
Buffalo Wild Wings of the reaction allacross the country was shock and awe.

(02:35):
And what are the Atlanta Falcons doingwith this pick? JJ McCarthy was there.
They could have gone with McCarthy, but instead they chose Pennix. They
had him higher on their board.Raheem Morris head coach down there, and
Atlanta loved him, and they takePennix, who's going to sit for a

(02:55):
couple of years, And honestly,my my whole take on this, my
hot take on this. I guessI think Michael Penis Junior, when all
is said and done, is gonnabe the best quarterback in this draft class.
We have six quarterbacks going in thefirst round, six in the top

(03:17):
twelve picks. J. J.McCarthy went at ten to the Vikings.
Bo Nicks went twelfth to the Broncos. We had six quarterbacks in the top
twelve picks, Williams Daniels, May, Pennix, McCarthy, Knicks, and
I think Pennix can be the bestof all of them. Why because he

(03:42):
is going to a situation where hecan sit for a couple of years behind
a veteran quarterback in Kirk Cousins, and he can learn the ways of the
NFL, and when he is finallyready to start, he can hit the
ground running. It is the exactsame method that the Packers have taken for
the past couple of decades. Thebest time to draft a quarterback is when

(04:08):
you don't need one. Atlanta didn'tneed one. They had a lot of
needs on the defensive side of theball, But they draft Pennix with the
idea that in a couple of years, when Kirk is going to be done,
when they can move on from Kirk, they can turn it over to

(04:28):
Michael Pennix and he'll be ready togo. A lot of the top quarterbacks
we see in the NFL they satfor a year, to Patrick Mahomes sat
for a year, Aaron Rodgers satfor three A lot of these guys,
when they get thrown into the fireright away, it takes a long time
for them to develop. For themto develop, it does Brady he sat

(04:55):
for a bit. Of course,Brady was a six round pick. But
still a lot of these guys thatget thrown into the fire right away,
they're not that good. The bustrade on quarterbacks it's pretty high. But
when these guys are able to sitand learn. Look at Jordan Love,
he sat for three years as well, has a fantastic first ye's first season

(05:19):
as a starter. McCarthy is goingto go to Minnesota and start right away.
Caleb Williams is going to go toChicago and start right away. Jade
Daniels starting right away, Drake Maystarting right away. Bow Knicks, I
mean he probably could start right away? Who also they got over there,

(05:40):
Zach Wilson and Ben Denucci and JaredStidham. Not a lot of competition in
that quarterback room, at least nota lot of good competition. So there's
a chance for bow Knicks to startright away. And even if he doesn't,
how long is Zach Wilson going tokeep him away from the job.
How long has Jared stid I'm goingto keep him away from the job.

(06:04):
All these other guys, they're goingto go in and they're probably going to
start right away. Michael Pennix willnot. He will sit now. Kirk
Cousins, he's coming off the Achillestear. Who knows what he's going to
look like this season. Who knowshow much longer his career is going to
go on. But if Cousins doesget hurt, if he gets too old

(06:27):
and his play starts to decline, they can turn it over to Penix.
But he will have some time tosit and learn the ways of the NFL
before he even starts a game.At least that's what the Falcons GM was
trying to explain to Arthur Blank, the owner. Arthur Blank did not look
happy in the draft room video.Uh, it's a tough gig to try

(06:54):
to be explaining that, but hey, he made the move that he felt
best for the franchise, same thingthat Brian Goodikuinz did a couple of years
ago, back in twenty twenty. Now then we got all these reports that
Kirk Cousins is upset. I meanthey did call him while they were on
the clock, being like, hey, we're doing this. He didn't get
any foe warning before they were onthe clock, which I'm sure there's no

(07:16):
reason too. They probably didn't decideuntil late. It would depend on who's
there on the board. You know, maybe if if JC Latham was still
there, if the offensive tackle wasstill there, maybe they would have taken
him instead. But they didn't.So Kirk Cousins is pissed. Is call
Aaron Rodgers buddy, you know ifyou guys want to vent about how all

(07:38):
this goes. But yeah, you'recoming off and an Achilles tear man.
Yeah, you just got one hundredmillion dollars guaranteed. Got nothing to be
upset about. Your job isn't inany danger. Sure, maybe you wanted
them to address the defense so thatthe team could be better this year.
But still you're getting paid, buddy. So that was the real shock of

(08:03):
the draft. Moving on down, the Jets traded down, take an offensive
lineman Olufshanu. No surprise there, gotta protect Rogers. First defensive player off
the board at fifteen, Indianapolis Coltswith the Layatu Latu. Then we get
a little bit of a run ofdefensive guys Byron Murphy, Dallas Turner,

(08:24):
Vikings getting Dallas Turner. That's Vikings, good, Turner and McCarthy. That's
a good draft for them. That'sa little scary for what Minnesota might be
doing coming up here. Then theLos Angeles Rams make their first first round
pick since Jared Goff and what doyou know, it's another Jared Jared verse

(08:46):
ed rush out of Florida State. They stuck, they picked, and they
got a pretty pretty solid, prettytop edge rusher there at nineteen overall.
Then we kind of moving out that. Another real kind of surprise in this
draft was how the cornerbacks did notgo until later. First cornerback off the

(09:11):
board was Quinyon Mitchell at twenty two. Now I saw some projecting him possibly
in the top ten, possibly toAtlanta. There, you know, I've
seen him kind of all over inthe earlier teens and around there, falling
to twenty two. It's quite thefall for the Corners now, I mean,

(09:31):
all these defensive guys really fell laterthan we were expecting. Dallas Turner
we thought could go top ten ortop twelve or something, but he ends
up falling to seventeen. Minnesota tradingup from twenty three to seventeen to get
him. So all those defensive guysfell, which means there's a lot of
them that are still going to beon the board coming up later. And

(09:56):
of course, as Packers fans, everyone is kind of licking their chops,
being like, we have our pickof the litter with the defense. This
could not have lined up better forgreen Bay only Quinnyon Mitchell goes there at
twenty two and Jackson Mille trade down. They take a wide receiver. It's

(10:16):
like, okay, we are sittingpretty, we are sitting in a prime
spot. But then then the DetroitLions and Dallas Cowboys make a move.
We'll talk about that trade and thenwhat the Packers did with their pick at

(10:37):
twenty five coming up. You're listeningto sports on Decaday Gasper here on thirteen
to ten. Wiba name morning man, She you go, fighting man.

(11:00):
Welcome back to Sports on Deck.Dave gasper here on thirteen ten, Wiba
talking NFL Draft as draft continues onday three. We're still we're still,
We're focusing on Round one here,Ron Blondins, where all the big headlines
are made, and the green BayPackers certainly made some of their own with

(11:22):
their selection in the first round. As they're sitting there at twenty five,
the Dallas Cowboys are in front ofthem, until they're not, and all
of a sudden, it is yourNFC North rival, the Detroit Lions,
that trade up to twenty four.Because you're sitting there one pick before green
Bay. You know green Bay needsdefensive backs. Terry on Arnold and Cooper

(11:48):
dejen are both on the board.Terry and Arnold no one really expected to
be there at that point in thedraft. He was expected to be long
gone by the time the Packers cameup. It's an athletic corner would fit
exactly what Green Bay was looking for. Detroit knew that, and they also

(12:11):
needed a corner. And the Cowboys, who were eliminated by the Packers in
the playoffs, were more than happyto trade back a few spots with the
Packers NFC North rival and allow themto get cornerback Terry on Arnold over there
at twenty four. So the Packersare sitting there at twenty five's they go,

(12:33):
okay, Cooper Degene is still there, still have a top rated corner
that's out there. There's also abunch of offensive linemen. Do we trade
down? What do we do?Brian go to cons decides to stick and
pick and he takes Jordan Morgan offensivetackle out of Arizona. Now, when

(12:54):
asked about this about possibly trading up, trading back, sticking and picking,
what they decided to do, whattheir thought process was. Here's what Guda
Kunst had to say about the possibilityof trading back with all these guys that
were on the board there at twentyfive. Yeah, we were looking at

(13:16):
it dig some different things throughout. You know. I think, uh,
the board held up really strong, which I feel like I say every year,
and it did, so we werepretty happy with the way it went.
But yeah, there was a coupleof things we were looking at to
you know, to make you know, kind of looking at if it didn't
make sense to move backwards at theend of the day because Jordan was available.
I just I didn't want to dothat. I wanted to make sure

(13:37):
we secured the player because I didn'tyou know, I didn't. I didn't
feel great about where we were goingto move to and how how it might
fall. So basically, Jordan Morganwas his guy stop right offensive lineman left
on the board, and he feltthat if he traded back, Jordan Morgan
would not be there. So youdon't want to trade back far enough that

(14:00):
you miss out on your main target. Right, If you're going to trade
back, you have someone in mindthat you think is going to be there
to wherever you're trading back to,and he probably wasn't going to. I
mean, if you're trading back,I mean you're trading back at least a
couple of spots here, probably intowhat maybe thirty two. You know,

(14:22):
the Chiefs traded up after that. That was really mostly it the Chiefs trading
up there for later in the firstround to take Xavier Worthy, so you'd
have trade back to thirty two.A couple more offensive linemen went in that
span. Graham Barton went immediately afterthe Packers to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

(14:46):
Tyler Geiton out of Oklahoma went tothe Dallas Cowboys at twenty nine after they
traded down, and you'd have tothink if the Packers traded back beyond that,
let someone else come up to takeWorthy or whoever, or that Jordan
Morgan might have been picked instead ofBarton or Geiten. So then you're looking

(15:07):
further down your board, and forgood accounts to that math, it just
didn't add up for him, whichis understandable. So you stick, you
pick, you take the guy thatyou like. And they really like Jordan
Morgan. There's a lot to likethere as as he was also talking about.
He can play all fours, hecan play four spots on the offensive
line, versatile guy, athletic guy, which are things that they like,

(15:31):
things that they target. Two timecaptain over there at Arizona, great guy
to have in the in the lockerroom. Those are all the things that
that you look for if you're GreenBay. So they stick, they pick,
and they take them. Now Iknow most of us we were all

(15:54):
thinking elsewhere. We're thinking Cooper dejenHe's he's on the board at this point,
and they didn't take them. Butno one else in the first round
did either, So was it reallythat much of a reach for them to
not take Cooper Degen. I know, last week I was talking about the

(16:17):
gene, I was talking about AmariusMims. Mims went eighteenth to the Bengals,
so he was not even there. But we were looking defense, were
looking at offensive line or defensive back, and that's pretty much what it came
down to. The Lions traded upone spot ahead of green Bay to take
a corner because they felt if thatcorner, if terry On Arnold was there

(16:42):
for green Bay, that the Packerswould take him. But instead, with
several offensive linemen on the board stillat twenty five, they can pick their
favorite of the group of Barton, and you know, you could see some
people be like, oh, whynot Geidon, why not bart Why not

(17:03):
these guys? They're also really good. Packers had Morgan rated higher. They
believe in him. He's versatile,he's athletic, can run, protect,
need some work in pass protection, but he's a good player. Bill Belichick
on the Pat McAfee Draft Spectacular,he was gushing over Jordan Morgan. There's

(17:30):
a lot of guys around the league. I mean, they knew Jordan Morgan
was pretty much not going to getout of the first round. A lot
of offensive linemen in this draft, nine of them went in the first round.
Morgan was going to be one ofthem. And it's always this out
of left field kind of thing. No one was really thinking. Jordan Morgan.
Geiton, I know, is apopular pick. Barton was a popular

(17:53):
pick. Mims Fatanu if he wasthere. Those were a lot of the
names that everyone's looking at, andof course we're all looking at Cooper Dejen.
A lot of us got super excitedabout the possibility of Terry On Arnold
falling all the way to Green Bay. A lot of different directions that they

(18:15):
could have gone, and it's alwaysthe one no one predicted. It always
is somehow, some way. AndI talked about this last week on the
show, like we can sit hereand be like, oh, yeah,
it makes the most sense. CooperDejen, Cooper Dejen, Cooper, Degen,
Mariusman's whoever. But it's probably gonnabe someone out of left field,

(18:36):
because it always is. Lucas vanNess was sort of out of left field,
you know, maybe sort of unexpected. I mean a lot of people
thought, okay, he's a possibility. Not sure if they wanted to do
that at that point in the draft, but hey, it's what they did.
And Lucas van neests. I mean, so far, he's looked pretty

(18:56):
good. Still kind of a project. He knew it was to begin with.
But it's always someone you're not expecting. It's always someone that's a Packers
guy through and through, like likehe just fits their mold so perfectly.
But yet none of us predict itevery single year who it's going to be,
and so some may be disappointed.I'm not. I think it's too

(19:18):
early for disappointment. You know.I think there's nothing wrong with taking an
offensive lineman, especially after losing DavidBaktiari and John Runyon Junior from your starting
line. Okay, you need helpon the offensive line. You have your
franchise quarterback and Jordan Love. Yougot to protect them, and so you

(19:41):
get another Jordan, Jordan Morgan toprotect Jordan Love. I see nothing wrong
with this pick. This is areally good pick in my opinion. Noah
was not Cooper Dejen but this guy'sexperience. He's got a lot of starts.
He's got thirty seven starts at lefttackle. This is gonna be competition

(20:03):
for Rashid Walker at the left tacklespot, but he could also play guard.
He could he could maybe find away to compete with Sean Ryan as
well. And as Goody's talking about, it's about the best five, putting
the best five together on your startingon your starting offensive line, whatever positions,

(20:23):
so may those may be. Thatis why the Packers love versatile offensive
linemen. Guys that can play bothtackle and guard, maybe even a couple
of guys that can play center,so you can mix and match. If
someone gets hurt, if someone goesdown, which happens quite a bit on
the offensive line, you can shufflethem around and everyone knows what they're doing.

(20:48):
You can move from from left guardto right guard, you can move
from right guard out to right tackleor whatever it is. If someone gets
hurt and you don't skip a beat. That's why you get these versatile guys.
So I love the Jordan Morgan pick. It's a very Packers pick.
No, it was not Cooper dejenlike we were all expecting, but it's

(21:11):
a good pick. It may notbe the sexiest pick, but it certainly
was needed. They needed help onthat offensive line. You have to protect
Jordan Love, you have found yourfranchise quarterback. You might want to keep
them up right, sounds like agood idea in my opinion, So get
them. There was so much offensetaken that there was a lot of defensive

(21:34):
defensive depth available for them later on, so I'm not worried. I'm not
worried about the rest of what they'regoing to do. They addressed a need
with what they felt was the bestplayer available on the board, and trading

(21:55):
back, potentially even back to thesecond round just would have been too Morgan
would not have lasted, Barton probablywould not have lasted, neither would have
Gueiten, And then you're looking ata completely different type of player that you're
going to be getting there. Yes, maybe you may get a couple extra
picks, but as Gudakun said,I mean he was there, did not

(22:18):
feel comfortable about trading back and juststick and take the player that you really
like, that you know is goingto compete and be a good player for
you. Coming up, the MilwaukeeBrewers also are having They had an interesting
week in Pittsburgh and now they gotthis big series against the New York Yankees.

(22:38):
We'll talk about that coming up nextas well. You're listening to Sports
on Deck with Dave Gasper here onthirteen to ten, WIBA. Welcome back

(23:00):
to Sports on Deck with Dave Gasperhere on thirteen ten WIBA. I am
Dave Gasper. You can follow meon Twitter at de Gasper. Twenty four.
The Marck Burger has got a bigseries up here against the New York
Yankees, and the Brewers are alittle beat up right now. They just

(23:22):
split a series out in Pittsburgh andtheir rotation is a bit of a mess
due to injuries. I mean, this is what you get when you rely
on a lot of journeyman veterans.Wade Miley is hurt and Dal Hall.
I mean Dal Hall's the rookie, but dal Hall is hurt. He's got

(23:48):
a knee spraining. That might be. That might explain why his velocity is
dipped quite a bit this year.I'm his fastballs around ninety one ninety two
is not where it should be.It's not where it has been. She
could explain his poor results as well. Jacob Junius on the injured list with

(24:11):
a shoulder impingement, and then whilehe's just trying to do a you know,
a couple of rehab stuff out onthe outfield during batting practice, he
gets hit in the back of theneck with a baseball, Like, seriously,
how could he be having worse luckthan this? Makes one start,
goes on the ils trying to comeback, and then just pop hitting the

(24:34):
neck with a baseball. He wasdown for quite a bit, taken to
the hospital in an ambulance. He'she's alert, responsive, he's fine.
But still, I mean, that'sa tough hit to take your back turn
to to home play. Maybe maybedon't have your back turned to home plate

(24:59):
during batting practice, you don't havea net in front of you. Just
just kind of a general rule ofthumb, maybe you shouldn't do that.
But still, he's out on theil. Who knows how much longer this
could extend his day. But yougot three starters on the injured list.

(25:19):
You got three true starters that arehealthy. You have Freddy Peralta, you
got Colin Ray, and you gotJoe Ross. Those are your healthy starters.
Per Alta had a bit of arough one on Thursday, but overall
he's been great this season. ColinRay has been great this season as well.

(25:41):
Joe Ross has been solid. It'sbeen all right, but you're relying
on now Tobias Myers. Tobias Myershad a great debut, five innings,
one earned run against Pittsburgh. Iwas that was about as well as you
could ask out at Tobias Myers,a guy who I mean, he pitched

(26:06):
a ton of innings in the minorleagues last year. Didn't have the greatest
Cira, gave up quite a fewruns down in double A, Biloxi and
double A. So it's like, okay, Myers, we'll see how long
he fits. But he has donewell with his opportunity and he has earned
more. Wich You love to seethese young guys. The burs are going

(26:26):
to need these young guys to stepup and earn these opportunities. Tobias Myers
has stepped up in his first opportunityand he has earned more. Bryce Wilson
has also gotten some chances to startnow, and he's earning some more opportunities
now. I think once we getwhat, once we see a couple of

(26:48):
other Brewers' pitchers get healthy again, then Bryce Wilson's just going back to the
bullpen. He's not going to bestarting. He's still not going that deep
into games, Wilson is, buthe's given you a couple of bulk endings
there, keeping you in the game, and that's all you can really ask
out of Bryce Wilson. But you'repiecing this rotation together with Tobias Myers and

(27:14):
Bryce Wilson. Tobias Myers wasn't evenon the forty man to begin the year.
Robert Gasser has made a rehab starting. You know, he's he's pitching
back in Triple A. He's backfrom the injured list. He had bone
spurs. I think the Brewers wouldhave preferred to have called on him by
now, but because he had thosebone spurs at the end of spring training,

(27:38):
they haven't been able to. Buthe's getting back out on the mound
and now that maybe he's got somemennings underneath him and Triple A we could
see him soon. But Carlos Rodriguez, your other top pitching prospect in Triple
A, has not been pitching thatwell. Aaron Ashby, a guy who
gave a five year contract to hehasn't been pitching that well, either in

(28:02):
the majors or the miners. Heonly had one start in the majors,
got some very awful defense there againstCincinnati. Wasn't all his fault, but
still then he goes back down totriple A and you'd think he'd be dominating,
but he's not. His era isjust as high down in triple A.
So that's a concern. So whodo you call upon. It's Tobias

(28:25):
Myers at this point, Maybe there'sEvan McKendree. Soon you can get Robert
Gasser back and see what he cando. But this rotation is foo.
It's not even May, and thisrotation is already on running on fumes.

(28:48):
Three healthy starters Freddie, Colin Ray, and Joe Ross. If you would
just look at that, just atthose names, you would think this team
is garbage. You'd think they'd beracing to the cellar of the NL Central,

(29:08):
but they're not. They're right upthere in first place. They're playing
well to start the season. That'sall you can ask for. They're playing
well, and that is because ofthe offense being as good as it has
been now. It did struggle alittle bit there in Pittsburgh the offense to
get going. They were able topick up Freddy Peralta on Thursday. But

(29:33):
this offense has been much improved overallon the season. We needed to stay
that way. Some guys are fallingdown a little bit and starting to scuffle.
The first couple of weeks of theseason, everyone was hot. It
seemed like, I mean, theyhad six seven guys in the line up
hitting three hundred or better. Itwas insane. But what do the Brewers

(29:59):
do this rotation? They need todo something, and does this call for
another Julio Tehran type of deal whereyou bring in a veteran from elsewhere and
you sign him to bring him into help tide things over like they did
last year when their rotation was inshambles because of injuries. Again they signed

(30:22):
Julio Tehran. They brought him over. He made six really good starts,
really helped stabilize the rotation. Thenhe started a stink and then some of
the other pictures got healthier and thenthey're like, well, thanks for your
services, Julio, but we arenot gonna need you anymore. So I
think he also got hurt too. That didn't That didn't help. But either

(30:45):
way, uh Tehran was, youknow, a non factor in the rotation
after that. But the Burgers neededthey need someone to step in their rotation
last year got saved by Colin Radand Julio Teyran. Colin Ray was up
and down and they were never reallyexpecting him to be a big piece,

(31:06):
but they called upon him pretty muchfirst when they needed someone, and he
did the job. He took theopportunity and ran with it, earned himself
a nice pay raise for this year, and he's back and he's pitching even
better this year. Colin Ray's beenphenomenal. You need someone else to be

(31:26):
that guy this year because now youhave right, Colin Ray's your number two.
Colin Ray is your number two starteron this team right now. Colin
Ray, if I would have toldyou that before the season, he again,

(31:47):
it's like I was saying before, you would have thought I was crazy.
No way. But the Birers can'tkeep going on with three healthy starters.
Myers. Who knows how long hisgood stretch is gonna last once hitters
start to figure him out. BryceWilson never really found success as a starter.

(32:10):
Mostly been good out of the bullpen, but he's still probably not gonna
get stretched out enough to give youfive or six. So if he's only
going three or four on a consistentbasis, you need more. You need
help. This bullpen is going tobe getting taxed quite a bit early on

(32:30):
this season, but the starters aren'tgoing deep. Joe Ross is coming off
of missing two years due to injury, so Pat Murphy has to take it
careful with him. You've got twotrusted starters right now. Who's going to
step up? Is it going tobe Myers He's getting the first crack at

(32:53):
it. Is it gonna be Gasser? Is it gonna be Ashby? Could
Jansen Junk get a start here orthere? Maybe maybe not. They need
some They need some help though. If they are going to succeed in October,

(33:15):
if they are going to keep upthis stretch of success throughout the season,
earn a spot in October and advancein October, they need more starting
pitching. They don't have it rightnow. They don't now things will help,
you know, if and when Mileygets healthy and Junis gets healthy and

(33:37):
Haul if he can get back healthyand figure out how to be a starter
in the big leagues. He struggledwith that. Right after he talks about
struggling with that has an east brain. I think what the Brewers need is
to put you know, he's onthe IL. Put him in Triple A

(33:58):
for a rehab assignment. He's readyto go, and just let him get
as many starts as possible in thatrehab assignment down Triple A. I mean
you you can have a rehab assignmentthe last month. You can go thirty
days on a rehab assignment for pitchersthere. I think, if I'm the

(34:20):
Brewers, I'm putting him down therefor the full thirty days. Get as
many starts as you can. AndTriple A. I know they don't want
to option him another one him asa trusted starter, but get as many
starts as you can before you activatehim again. Help him get settled into
a routine as a starter down therefacing a little bit lighter competition. But

(34:46):
then when he comes back up,then he'll be ready to go. He'll
know what it takes to be astarter, hopefully, or at least he'll
be closer. He's got to becloser because what he was doing before was
not enough. He admitted it.Murphy admitted it was not good enough.
If he's going to be a starterin the big leagues, he has to

(35:07):
be better. It's gonna take time. He walks too many just he gets
ahead of guys and then loses him. Pitch count goes up, gives up
hits. Those walks will kill you. Giving up runs, short outings,
taxing, the bullpen can't do it. You can't do it. So they

(35:31):
need to get him right in arehab stint in triple A for as long
as you can possibly keep him therewould be the best way to get him
as ready as possible when he finallycomes back. He may be healthy,
completely healthy after the first or secondrehab start. I don't care. Put

(35:53):
him back down there for keep himdown there for a couple more. Make
sure, and not only just workon making sure that knee feels fine,
make sure everything else is working togot to get the mindset right, got
to get the preparation in between endings, all of it. The Brewers put

(36:14):
a lot of eggs in the dlHull basket. They traded Burns for him.
Corbin Burns, the only cy Youngwinner since nineteen eighty two that the
Brewers have had. They traded himfor this guy because they believed D.
L. Hull could be the nextBurns. He could be your next number
one. Now Burns he went throughthe same kind of rough stretch in twenty

(36:37):
nineteen. He couldn't hack it asa starter. They took him off the
field, they put him in thepitching lab, and he figured things out.
I don't think dal Hull necessarily needsto be completely taken off and go
to the pitching lab, at leastnot yet. But they need him to
figure it out, and it'll takesome time. But he's already had time

(37:00):
in the bullpen out there in Baltimore. He knows about pitching in the big
leagues. It's about doing it asa starter, and the Brewers need starters.
They don't have enough right now. They are getting by with Tobias Myers
and Bryce Wilson. That's not goingto last very long. Coming up,

(37:22):
we'll wrap things up right here onSports on Deck with Dave Gasper here on
thirteen ten WIBA Sports on Deck withDave Gasper rolls on here for just a
few more minutes on your Saturday, and before I close out, I want

(37:50):
to talk a little bit about thetransfer portal in college basketball. Chuckie Hepburn
has gone to Louisville. Louisville,Chucky has transferred away from Wisconsin. It
was a big shock to everybody prettymuch. Chuckie was as much of a

(38:12):
program guys as anyone. Not forsure he'd stay for his senior season.
I mean, why not. It'shad a ton of success. The starting
point guard. His job's not reallyin any danger. Yes, you have
a four star point guard coming inthis next year's recruiting class. But losing
Chucky to Louisville, man, thathurts. But what can you do if

(38:37):
you're Wisconsin. As great Guard wastalking about, you know, we're recruiting
guys and keeping guys that it's notnecessarily about the program, you know,
like guys are just straight up gettinga bag of cash. Chuckie has just
got a bag of cash to goplay for Louisville. Wisconsin doesn't necessarily go

(39:04):
about it that way. Wisconsin isnot the only program, by the way,
that is being hurt by the wildWest. That is nil. Some
schools are using it just as afree bag of money to bring some of
the top players in aj store.Same thing, got a bunch of money

(39:24):
to go transfer to Kansas. Bunchof money, Chuckie, hepburn a bunch
of money double what he was probablygonna make at Wisconsin. And don't hate
Chucky for that. Don't hate theplayer, hate the game, right,
don't hate Chucky for this. Ifyou had an opportunity as much as you

(39:47):
love your job, whatever it isthat you're doing, as much as you
love it, if someone else,if some other company or whatever, offered
you another three hundred thousand dollars ayear to do the exact same job,
but for them, you take ittoo. You take it too. Don't

(40:12):
hate the player, hate the game, Hate that the NCAA has allowed and
the nil landscape to work like this. They need to put in at least
some regulations on this. They don'thave any yet, They can't agree on
any. It is the wild West. It is what we currently live in.
It is a professionalization of college sports. It's free agency all the time.

(40:34):
And you can't even sign someone tolong term contracts to avoid free agency.
No, everyone's pretty much on aone year deal. You can leave
whenever, you can leave after whateverseason you want and get more money elsewhere.
That's the way that it is now. It sucks, But don't hate

(40:55):
the player, don't hate store, don't hate Chucky for it. Don't hate
the player, hate the game.I'm out of time. That'll do it
for me. Be sure to followme on Twitter at Degasper twenty four.
