You were listening to Sports on Deckwith Dave Gasper. Welcome to Sports on
Deck with Dave Gasper here on thirteento ten. WIBA, I am Dave
Gasper. Of course, I'm prettysure you figured that part out by now.
You can follow me on Twitter atde Gasper twenty four. Lots of
great stuff on there, just saying, just saying, by the way,
(00:32):
lots of great stuff you get tooon the show here today as well,
talking to Walkee Brewers. They gotthis weekend series here against the Saint Louis
Cardinals as they are back home fromtheir trip to Kansas City, and the
Brewers they are, you know, doing well. They're up there in first
place with the Chicago Cubs, andthey've been top this division all season long.
(00:56):
They've been playing exceptionally well. Youknow, they've had they had some
struggles there on the road trip theydid, you know, they had some
struggles in Kansas City to get thingsgoing, but they were able to at
least pull out a win there ona Willia Domas home run with two outs
in the ninth where he called hisown shot. Not since Babe Ruth have
(01:19):
we seen this, but Willie Thomas, he did it. Willie Thomas,
Babe Ruth. That is the listof players who have called their shots.
It's pretty good company for Willia Domasjust saying it's not bad company to be
in there with Babe Bruce. Obviouslyhe didn't, you know, point out
to the stands of where he wasgoing to hit the baseball. But as
Willie Thomas was on deck, he'sbantering back and forth with a couple of
(01:42):
fans behind the on deck circle.Fans were saying, oh, we want
Willy, we want Willy to getup there. They thought, you know,
they're gonna get Willy out and thenthe game. Willie He's like,
oh, yeah, you sure.I don't know if you put me up
there, if he walks, thismight be over. Then sure enough,
(02:04):
Gary Sanchez, he draws a walk. Willie Domas turns back to the fans.
He's like, watch this boom homerun on the second pitch. Seriously.
Here here's murph Here, here's PatMurphy explaining exactly what it is he
saw that, Like this legit happened. It's not just folklore, like Willie
(02:29):
Domas, like Pat mur like, everyone's all confirmed, Yes, this is
exactly what happened. Here here's whatMurphy said about it, telling the fans
he's gonna do it. The groupof fans right right by the on deck
circle, Willie is announcing to them, if I get up there, we're
gonna take the lead. He's announcingto him over and over, and they're
playing back and forth with each other. Gary walks. He turns back to
me. He goes, watch this, Bam, you're being serious. I'm
(02:53):
being dead serious. That's what hedid. He'll tell you about it.
It's it's amazing. That's some ruth. I mean, Pat Murphy can confirm
me he is dead to Pat Murphydoesn't choke around with stuff like Pat Murphy
can. He can be a bitof a jokes here, but I mean
something like that, like absolutely seriously, you know when Pat Murphy is being
(03:15):
serious, that actually happened. It'sincredible, it really is. You love
the confidence, you really do loveto see it. And I mean,
to be a major league kider, you have to have high levels of confidence.
You do. You have to beconfident in your abilities in order to
be there. I mean, thisis a game where you fail seven out
(03:37):
of ten times, and that's whenyou're considered great. When you fail seven
out of ten times, So yougot to be pretty confident in yourself,
in your abilities, and Willie Domascertainly is. He went up there with
the attitude, I am going togive us this lead. Fans were going
back, Fans were given them themotivation more than anything. Maybe maybe I'm
(04:00):
more than anything, but fans aregiving them the motivation. They're they're egging
them on, they're getting them allworked up. It's all in good fun,
as they were talking about. Buthe did it. He followed through.
There's nothing worse than, you know, having that be like, oh
yeah, I'm gonna go and hita homer right here, and then striking
out like that, that would beso much worse. That is something that
(04:26):
I probably would have done in myplaying career, just end up striking out
instead. And I know maybe that'swhat some people expected, but hey,
he came through, He got theBrus and win. They were down to
their last strike, they were downto their last out, and Contreras came
through, Sanchez came through, andthen the Damas came through, and the
Brus ended up pulling out the wind. And that is what we love to
(04:47):
see, love to see it.So Willie Domas gets brus a win there
in Kansas City. And you know, we also start seeing some some other
changes too with this. With thislineup, Bryce Terrang is now in the
leadoff spots, and I just kindof want to, you know, bring
(05:10):
this back a little bit and justpoint out a couple of things. So
I also have the Brew Talk podcastwith Hunter bomb Guards here on iHeart.
Find that on the iHeartRadio app.Can subscribe to that, and I recommend
that you do. And on lastweek's episode, on the episode that this
(05:30):
week that we put out on Monday, new new episodes every every Monday afternoon,
in that episode, I talked about, you know, I think it's
time to put Bryce Terrang in theleadoff spot. He's been sitting around here
at the bottom of the order, batting seventh, eighth, whatever. He's
started being moved up to fifth inthe order. But he's hitting around three
(05:51):
hundred. He's getting on base aroundthree seventy, you know, thirty seven
percent of the time, one ofthe highest on base percentages on the team,
if not highest. He is stealingbases left and right. He's got
fifteen stolen bases on the season.Hasn't been caught once. He is a
perfect ideal leadoff hitter. Why notmove him there? He is performing better
(06:15):
than south Freelix. South Freelic hasspent most of the year in the leadoff
spot. Sal Frelick is doing okay, but he hasn't really been great.
He hasn't really been impressive. Hehasn't been your typical leadoff hitter type getting
on base speed, stealing bases, things like that. He hasn't done it.
He hasn't done a good enough job. I think Freelik needed to move
further down in the order and putBryce Trying up top. He's been your
(06:39):
best performing hitter. Put him onahead of Contraras now that Yelich is back,
or Yelich in the three hole. That sounds like runs to me.
And sure enough, sure enough, about two days later, I believe it
was Pat Murphy puts Bryce Training inthe leadoff spot. I'm just saying,
(07:05):
I'm just saying. You heard ithere. First. I talked about it
on the podcast on Monday, Iput out an article on it on reviewing
the brew dot com, which Ialso highly recommend you check out. And
then, sure enough, shortly afterBryce Training ends up going to the leadoff
spot called it. And then whatdoes he do first time, first day
(07:26):
in the leadoff spot. He hitslike three doubles, He goes three for
four. It's go okay, justkind of thriving the leadoff role. And
then on Thursday against the Cardinals,he's back in the lead off spot.
It's okay. What happens here?Bryce Trang gets a single? Okay,
(07:46):
cool steal second base as as hedoes. Yeah, okay. William Contrera's
next pitch single up the middle.Bryce Traang scores. That is what I'm
talking about people. That is exactlywhy you have Bryce Terrag in that leadoff
spot. That's why he's there. You get him on base. He can
(08:11):
steal second base very easily. Hegets himself in a scoring position for Contreras,
for Yelich, for Hoskins, fortwo, three, four in the
order, whoever it is, Hoskins, adamis, Whoever's four. But he
gets on base ahead of the bestcatcher in baseball, William Contreras. He
(08:33):
gets on base, he's in scoringposition ahead of Christian Yelich. That is
going to be manufacturing so many runsfor this team. It's what I was
talking about on Brew Talk. Sowhat the whole article was about on the
site. It is the perfect fit. Pat Murphy, apparently a noted listener
(09:01):
of the Brew Talk podcast and thereader of reviewing the Brew took my suggestion
and it's gone pretty well so far. It really has so just you know,
slight humble brag. Just just gotto point it out, you know,
just just want to point it out. Who said it, who said
it before it happened. You know, it's easy to look at it now
(09:22):
and be like, oh yeah,Bryce trying over there is a good idea.
Some of us are visionaries. Maybethat's it. Oh man, Sometimes
I just gotta I gotta crack myselfup. But things are going well with
Bryce training off spot rang Contraras Yelich. Yelich being back is huge as well.
(09:45):
He's come back and he really hasn'tmissed a beat. It feels like
the way he's been hitting the balland getting hits, getting on base,
Yelich is looking good. They tooka little bit of extra time to bring
him back, but he's looking good. He's playing well. He's hitting the
ball well. And this was kindof always the concern from everyone once that
(10:07):
back started to flare up. Youknow, the first couple of weeks,
he's playing some really good baseball. He's looking like the the MVP version of
himself again, finally the version thatno one really thought we'd see again.
And Okay, then he goes outfor a couple of weeks, has the
back injury, and all of asudden, it's like, oh, no,
(10:28):
is he going to be back tothe same way that he was before.
He didn't even go on a rehabassignment, he didn't go down to
Triple A on rehab. He justcomes back and is just lightening it up.
So it's great to see. GettingYelge back in the form is absolutely
crucial for this Bruis lineup. Theyneed him. They were struggling offensively without
(10:52):
him the past couple of weeks, putting Tyler Black in the three hole,
putting sal Free, look there, put putting so many guys there that really
don't fit in that three hole inthe lineup, it just didn't work.
You needed Yelich back. They've gotthem back and things are looking up for
(11:13):
this offense. Yelish back in thethree hole, terrang in the one and
you got a recipe for success rightthere. But that's just the offense.
The pitching staff though a little bitof a different story. We'll get more
into that coming up. Here. You're listening to Sports on Deck with Dave
Gasper here on thirteen to ten WIBASports on Deck with Dave Gasper, rolling
(11:52):
on here on your Saturday afternoon.Lovely Saturday afternoon. The marck Burrs currently
in their weekend series against the SaintLouis Cardinals. I'm gonna be at the
final two games here this weekend,so that's going to be fun. After
this, I'll be heading over tothe game. It's gonna be a lot
(12:15):
of fun. Excited for it.The Brewers, though, are gonna need
a little more help with their pitchingto make it through the season. Now,
they've gotten some help so far withsome guy stepping up. Tobias Myers
had a good start the other day. Now we've seen Robert Gasser called up
and you got Bryce Wilson who's steppinginto a role in the rotation, which
(12:39):
has been great. Wilson I didn'tthink had much of a future in the
rotation after he kind of failed outof it his first couple of years in
the majors, and found a reallygood role in the bullpen last year,
but a need came up in therotation, and Bryce Wilson has stepped in
admirably with the job that he isdone, being able to give some length
(13:01):
keeping them verers in games. Howlong it lasts, we'll see, But
so far they are getting by becauseof Bryce Wilson and Tobias Myers and now
we're seeing Robert Gasser get his shot. But they're going to need more help
(13:22):
with this grip they just are.We knew coming into the season, and
I had talked about this at lengthas well, about how they were going
to be opening opportunities for young guysto step forward, that the veteran rotation
editions that they brought in were notgoing to stop them. They were going
(13:45):
to be stopped gaps to help fillin until those young guys were ready.
And I think we knew eventually atsome point those older guys would you deal
with some injuries along the line,You couldn't count on them for a ton
of innings. But I don't thinkthey expected those veteran journeyman rotation editions to
(14:05):
go this sideways. This quickly WadeMiley's out for the year. He made
two starts covering seven innings. JacobJunas made one start and he's on the
sixty day injured list. You gotJoe Ross, who's you know? He
had a first he had a goodfirst couple of starts. Kind of coming
(14:28):
back down to earth here, it'slooking like he hasn't pitched in the majors
in two years. Oh wait, that's because he hasn't. It's not his
fault, you know, you know, injuries, you know happen. But
you're relying on Joe Ross for alot. How much longer is he going
to be able to keep a rotationspot? And then you're relying on a
(14:52):
whole bunch of young kids, awhole bunch of them, a whole bunch
of unproven assets behind Freddy Peralta andfrankly, Colin Ray. Colin Ray has
stepped up to be that guy,to be that guy behind Freddy. He's
the number two on this team rightnow. And if you had asked me
a while ago, if I wouldhave thought I'd be saying Colin Ray is
(15:13):
the number two starter on the Brewers, I'd have thought you were nuts.
I would have thought you were nuts. I wouldn't have been the only one
too but here we are. Thisis baseball. This is why it's not
played on paper. But Colin Rayhas stepped up. Freddy Peralta is Freddy
(15:37):
Peralta kind of struggled his last timeout, but still he's the ace of
this team. He's currently serving ah, you know, serving a suspension there,
but he's gonna be He's gonna beback now, serve his suspension after
his start against the Cubs, andyou know, now it's like, okay,
(15:58):
his next start just gets pushed backhere, So he's going to be
starting tonight. He originally would havebeen scheduled to start Friday, but his
five game suspension force that to bepushed back at day and that's why Robert
Gasser came up for Friday. Butwe're only in the middle of May,
(16:19):
even still the early part of May. Here, it's a long way to
go, and you are already facingthe limits of your starting pitching depth.
You're gonna need more even with theyoung guys you have in the minus are
you gonna be relying How much moreare you going to rely on unproven guys
making their major league debuts for ateam that's supposed to be contending for a
(16:44):
Division title, contending for a playoffspot. Not only a playoff spot,
but a playoff run, a rundeep into October, and not just a
first round exit. Granted, they'vehad first round exits past the past couple
of years, even with a strongrotation, even with Corbyn Burns and Freddy
Peralta and Brandon Woodfoile. They didn'thave woodro f last year, but that
(17:06):
really didn't change that much. Theystill only played two games. You just
moved Peralta up a day. Sohow are you gonna do it? How
are you gonna get there? Youneed to bring in someone from the outside.
But you who are you gonna bringin? That's the question right now?
Who do you bring in? Itis may trade headlines not till July.
(17:32):
End of July. Got a waysto go, but the trademarket did
get a little bit of a kickstartalready from the Miami Marlins. They traded
Luis Rise to the San Diego Padresfor a package of prospects and a reliever
named Wu suck Go who, accordingto scouts, he actually sucks. He's
(17:56):
actually not that good. But youknow that's what the Marlins did. Very
interesting move trading Arise now and justalready giving up on the season in the
beginning of May. But hey, that's the Marlins problem. This is not
a Marlins focused show. But theymade those moves. So now everyone's curiosity
(18:21):
on the trade market here and allthese other talks are really kind of starting
to pick up. It's like, well, hey, if they're willing to
wheel and deal now, maybe weshould be too. Maybe other teams that
are falling out of contention will betoo. Maybe the Marlins are going to
trade off even more and do itwell before the July trade deadline. The
earlier you trade them, theoretically, you know, the more control, the
(18:45):
more return that the buying team willget. You get more months of this
player, more weeks, more starts, more at bats, whatever it is.
You get more from that player thisseason, and the earlier you trade
them, which means that you canask for higher prices. Now they have
(19:07):
some hitters that could be rentals thatthey could trade off, and the earlier
they trade them, they could getmore. The pitching, though, is
more where the Brewers would be lookingand where they should be looking, and
their pitching is all very controllable formultiple years, so trading them a month
earlier doesn't necessarily mean that the returnis going to be that much higher,
(19:33):
because it's not like you're getting fivemonths versus two months of a player.
You're getting two years and five monthsversus two years and two months. So
the difference is a little bit morenegligible, I would guess. But that
doesn't mean they're not going to entertaintrading them. If they get an offer
(19:56):
that they like that they wouldn't makethe move. And the Brewers have shown
before as we know, that theyare willing to make moves in May.
Think back three years ago, theBrewers had a big need at shortstop.
Luis Arius was not cutting it,so they made a trade with the Rays
to get Willia Donnas. They madeit in May. They didn't wait until
(20:19):
July. They made the move inMay because they needed it. The same
thing could be happening here. TheBrewers need help in that rotation. They're
patchworking it together with Tobias Myers andBryce Wilson. They've only got so many
(20:41):
pitching prospects and things are only goingto go so well for so many of
them. Not everyone's going to succeedright out of the gate. So if
you have some struggles on some ofthe guys that you're relying on there to
come up, you still have awhole. So that's where I think the
(21:03):
Burers need to be looking. Sosome places to look, some names to
think of here, looking over atthe Marlins as we've been talking about,
Hey, Suscilizardo and Trevor Rodgers arethe two names I'm keeping my eyes on
now. If you look at theirsurface numbers, you look at their ra
and whatnot, it's not good.So it's like, why would we want
a guy with a six something era? And I will remind you that these
(21:26):
guys are on the worst team inbaseball, okay, or one of the
worst teams in baseball. The Marlinsare awful. They're not helping any of
their pitchers at all. You getthose players, you get Haye sucil Zardo,
who has put up good numbers before, you get Trevor Rodgers, who
has put up good numbers four. You get him out of that organization,
(21:48):
You get him out of that incompetentorganization, and you put them with the
Burgers. You put them with ateam that knows pitching. The Burgers no
pitching. They know how to developpitching they know how to get pitching back
on track. These guys are ubertalented. Hey, Zeusiszardo and Trevor Rodgers.
If they've lost their way, ifthey've done some sort of tweak that's
(22:10):
causing them to not be successful, the Brewers can figure out the way to
tweak it back to get them tobe successful. So don't just look at
their ear rays and be like, these guys are bad. I'm telling you,
these are good pitchers. You getthem out of that situation in Miami,
(22:30):
you get them on the Brewers, with the Brewers pitching coaches, the
Brewers pitching lab, those guys aregonna be studs for you. Now.
Lozardo's been dealing with a bit ofan injury himself with it with an elbow
issue, but he's been rehabbing andhe should be back starting big league game
soon. Trevor Rodgers, he's dealtwith injuries in the past, but he's
(22:52):
healthy and he's someone that I've alwaysthought would be a perfect fit for the
Brewers. So those are two namesI'm looking at. Eric Fetti of the
White Sox. The White Sox arealso one of the worst teams in baseball
this season, but Fetti. He'sbeen a pretty good pitcher for him.
Probably they're only good pitcher, probablyprobably their only bright spot on the season.
(23:18):
He's got an air around three anda half. Give them some depth,
give them some innings. Eric Fettysounds like a Bruis type of addition.
He's he's definitely kind of that JoeRoss, Colin Ray, you know,
class of pitcher that that's just kindof eating innings, you know,
getting starts for you and keeping youin games. But you could use another
(23:41):
guy like that because you lost WadeMiley, you lost Jacob Junas, who
are also in that similar class. So Eric Fetty another one to look at.
There's another name I'm seeing pop upas well that's still trying to sign.
He's a free agent. The Birdscould get him now if they really
(24:03):
wanted to, and you know, really only have to pay you know,
whatever is, whatever salary is.They don't have to give up any prospects
or anything to get them. RichHill the Ageles wonder Rich Hill. He's
forty four years old. He's stillopen to signing and getting himself ready to
sign mid season somewhere, and thinkshe can can do some good and have
(24:23):
some solid innings. Look, Ilove rich Hill for the fact that he's
just been able to pitch so long, but I'd rather not see them go
out and get the forty four yearold rich Hill is like, he can
go out there, but is hereally actually keeping you in these games?
(24:44):
Is he going to be pitching thatwell? I don't know. I would
rather take my chance on a youngerguy and give opportunities to them. I
know, I've just kind of beenlamenting about how it's all gonna be younger
guys that have no experience. Chillhas the most experience of pretty much anybody
that's out there. But I wouldjust rather not go that direction. I
(25:07):
would rather go out and try andconvince the Marlins to trade for or trade
a Hayesu Solzardo or Trevor Rodgers orsomething like that, get Eric Fetti from
the White Sox something, because thoseteams aren't going anywhere. They're not.
The Burgers have a deep farm system. They have the ability to trade for
any one of those guys without havingto give up really too much. They
(25:32):
don't have to give up any oftheir top tier prospects. You know,
none of those guys are really gonnacost you someone like like a Tyler Black
or a Ye for some Caro orguys like that. It's not gonna cost
you any of your top tier prospects. You're gonna need help with this rotation.
I feel like I say it everysingle week at this point. But
(25:52):
those are just a couple of names. Trademarket apparently starting to heat up a
little bit here in early May.Those are just a couple of names I
am. I'm keeping an eye onas we could see more moves coming on
down the line. We got morethan we gotta get to here as well.
On Sports on Deck, you're listeningto Sports on Deck with Dave Gasper
(26:15):
here on thirteen ten, WIBA.Welcome back to Sports on Deck with Dave
(26:37):
Gasper here on thirteen ten WIBA.I am Dave Gasper. You can follow
me on Twitter at d Gasper twentyfour. Now. If you're wondering about
the music choice here, second Chanceby thirty eight special, they're like,
why would he choose that? Well, because what I want to talk about
(27:00):
here is a guy getting a secondchance at a sports career, an interesting
guy. That's most of you mayknow, some of you may know,
some of you may not, butit's related to Christian Yelich sort of in
a way. So back in twentyeighteen, when the Brewers traded to get
(27:23):
Christian Yelch from the Marlins, theysent a package of four players back to
Miami, four top prospects, LewisBrinson, Asan Diaz, Jordan Yamamoto,
and Monte Harrison. Now, noneof those four guys really panned out for
Miami or in their major league careersat all, unfortunately for Miami and all
(27:47):
those guys. Really you hate tosee it, but it happens. And
Christian Yelch went on to win MVPwith the Brewers, and you know history,
you know, you know the restof the story. But Monte Harrison
isn't letting his athletic career story beover. He's bounced around past couple of
(28:08):
years. He's only gotten a smallhandful of at bats in the big leagues
and he's struck out in most ofthem. And the Brewers had him last
year down in the minor leagues, down in tripa A. He did not
well. I played in eighty eightgames at like two oh eight Monte Harrison
last year. You know it justit wasn't gonna happen for him, didn't
(28:30):
get called back up to the bigleagues, really wasn't gonna be getting He
wasn't getting another shots to play professionalbaseball. You know, he'd probably have
to go all the way down toindependent ball. And you know, at
twenty eight years old as an outfielder, you know, with the prospect status
that he used to have and thekind of hitter that he's been, it
(28:51):
just wasn't gonna happen for him.It just wasn't. So what did Monte
Harrison do? He said, I'mgoing to change careers. I'm going to
go back to school. I'm goingto go back to college. And he's
going to college at the University ofArkansas, and he's going to walk on
for the football team at the Universityof Arkansas. Monte Harrison, the former
(29:18):
Brewers uber prospect with power and speedand athleticism, the former top prospect,
is now going to be a widereceiver walk on at the University of Arkansas.
That was just announced a couple ofdays ago from some Arkansas recruiting watchdog
(29:40):
guy down there. And you know, actually, like this, this does
make a lot of sense really forMonty Harrison all this when the Brewers drafted
him in twenty fourteen. Ten yearsago, the Brewers drafted him. I
remember watching that draft. That ishow much time flies. I am feeling
old at this point, but notas old as Monty Harrison's going to be
(30:03):
feeling. As the twenty eight yearold on a college football team filled with
eighteen to twenty two year olds.He is ten years the senior of the
rest of his freshman class. Buthe never went to college, so we
were assigned him out of high school. They gave him a one point eight
million dollars signing bonus to avoid goingto college. Now, back then,
(30:23):
nil was not what it is,So it's like, I mean, you
could wait three years and make absolutelyno money as a college athlete over there,
or you can take one point eightmillion dollars. What are you going
to do? You're going to takethe one point eight million dollars and go
play professional baseball. But of course, now players can get freaking paid all
(30:44):
they want over in college sports, which is a whole other issue. But
Monte Harrison is going to be awalking over there. Here's a four star
recruit as a wide receiver coming outof high school. He was committed to
the University of Nebraska. Thankfully forthe Badgers and everyone else in the Big
Ten, Harrison did not end upplaying football at Nebraska. Unfortunately for Nebraska
(31:07):
though, But now he's going toArkansas. He's not going back to Nebraska.
I maybe would have thought he'd goback to his commitments, you know,
where he was before. But ofcourse there have been a lot of
coaching changes over at Nebraska since sinceMonty Harrison was being recruited. We know
that much for sure. So MontyHarrison, he's gonna be twenty eight year
(31:30):
old walk on playing college football, and who knows, maybe in a couple
of years. You know, hisspeed and athleticism is still there. I
mean, twenty eight years old isnot old, you know, it's not
ancient by any means, but Imean compared to the eighteen year olds that
he's gonna be playing with and against, it's kind of old. It is,
(31:53):
I mean, just for comparison's sakehere for playing football. But hey,
he'd never went to college before. He's been playing professional baseball since he
was eighteen, and because he wentas a professional baseball player, he is
eligible to play other college sports. He can't go back and play college baseball
(32:15):
at all, but he can playcollege football all that he wants, and
who knows, maybe he can findhis way into the lineup, make some
catches, catch some touchdowns. Ina couple of years, maybe he can
turn himself into an NFL draft prospect. I don't know if he'd actually get
drafted, but you only have tobe out of high school for three years
(32:37):
to be eligible for the NFL draft, so he doesn't have to wait until
he's a thirty one year old juniorat the University of Arkansas. Technically he
could go after his freshman year. You just don't see it much because most
of the time those college football playersare straight out of high school. But
still, Harrison, if he's ableto walk on, if he's able to
(33:01):
earn himself some playing time, putsome tape together, maybe we could see
him get drafted. Obviously, hewouldn't be you know, first round,
second round, whatever draft pick. He'd be late day three at the best.
I mean, even then, wouldanyone really waste a draft pick on
a twenty eight year old wide receiver. They might just let him go undrafted
(33:22):
and then he can sign as anundrafted free agent and try to make the
team from there. That would probablybe the most likely scenario for Monty Harrison.
But hey, he's getting his secondchance at a sports career. I
mean, he is this uber athlete. Obviously didn't work out for baseball for
him. Maybe it would have workedout if he stayed in Milwaukee and didn't
(33:45):
go to Miami. Maybe it wouldn'thave. He always had that potential to
strike out way too much and notmake enough contact. He was always a
high risk kind of bat. TheVerse traded him well as value was high,
and they got an MVP out ofit. So I'm very curious to
see and I mean, he's like, he's not going to some like tiny
(34:06):
school to play college football. Heis going to the SEC. He is
going to the best conference in collegefootball. I know this is Big Ten
country. Okay, I know it'slike a right raw Big Ten, but
let's be honest with ourselves. Eventhough Michigan won the national championship this year,
the SEC is the top conference incollege football. That's just a fact.
(34:31):
Now, Arkansas, they're not exactlyknown as one of the best teams
in the SEC, but still he'splaying in the best conference. He is
going to be playing against the Alabamasand the Texas A and M's and the
Georgia's, the of the world. He's playing against top notch opponents. We'll
(34:53):
see how much he plays. Obviously, he's a walk on. They're not
going to give a scholarship to atwenty eight year old wide receiver in college
football. They're just not They haveso many other recruiting worries to deal with
with some of these young kids andtrying to keep kids in these transfer portal
(35:15):
era They're not going to waste ascholarship on that. As good as Monty
Harrison maybe could have been, Imean, he would have gotten a scholarship
back then. He was a fourstar recruit. Four stars. You know,
at twenty eight, you know yourspeed isn't exactly gone. His ability
(35:36):
to catch him pretty sure isn't gone. So I'm curious. I'm very excited
to see what he's going to do. I'll be keeping an eye on Arkansas
football a little bit this year, just to see what Monty Harrison's up to
see if he's making some catches,if he's getting some playing time. I
(35:57):
don't know what his expectations are.I don't know what Arkansas expectations are,
but he's clearly still a good enoughathlete. He's going to college, he's
going to get his degree. Maybeunless you know, the NFL wants,
unless he really feels like he cantry and join that list of players who
have made teams both in Major LeagueBaseball and the National Football League. Now
(36:21):
that's an elite list. Like thatis an elite group of athletes. If
Monty Harrison can make it. Justthink of the names in that list.
Now, this used to be morecommon like pre World War Two, but
only seven players have played in bothMajor League Baseball and the NFL since nineteen
(36:42):
seventy. Everyone knows the first twonames, Bo Jackson Dion Sanders as the
most notable names who have done both. Is also Brian Jordan, Drew Henson,
Chad Hutchinson, DJ Doser, andMatt Kinzer are the only seven people
who have played in both. Thelast guy to do it was Drew Henson,
(37:07):
played for the Yankees and two andthree quarterback for the Cowboys and Lions
in two thousand and four and twothousand and eight. That's the last time
we saw a player who had beenin both. You don't see it much.
Only the elite of the elite athletescan make that kind of switch and
play both. Even that most ofthe elite of the elite, they're so
(37:30):
elite at one that they just kindof stick with it. Really, No
one tries to do what Bo Jacksonand Deon Sanders they where they're playing in
both at the same time, becausethat's something that is pretty much impossible to
do nowadays. And that's not whatThat's not what Monty Harrison here is doing.
(37:52):
He's not trying to be the nextBo Jackson and Deon Sanders, but
still to go from playing one professionalsport even though he wasn't a great major
leaguer, to trying to play another. He's not there yet, obviously,
he's only playing college football. Buthe could get there, He really could.
I wouldn't put it past him. He's that good of an athlete that
(38:16):
could have a guy, so whoknows. We'll see, We'll see how
he does at Arkanas. But MontyHarrison second chance at a sports career,
trying to go back to school, get his degree and play a little college
football. Maybe he can get himselfsome nil money. You can make more
in nil and he probably would onhis major league sal was certainly more than
(38:38):
on his minor league salary. Beinga college football player you could make more
than than being a baseball minor leaguer. I'm excited for him. Good for
you, Monty Harrison, rooting foryou, buddy. Sad it didn't work
out Miami, but hey, theVerse got Christian Yellick, so no complaints
(39:01):
over here. We'll come back towrap things up. You're listening to Sports
on Deck with Dave gasper here onthirteen ten WIBA. Just a little bit
(39:22):
left here with you on Sports onDeck Dave gasper here on thirteen ten WIBA
on your Saturday afternoon. And I'mnot sure if you saw it this week,
but there was the greatest roast ofall time, the roast of Tom
Brady. And it was absolutely incredible. The jokes, the burns, it
(39:45):
was amazing, all sorts, comedians, NICKI Glazer, Kevin Hart, I
mean, Julian Edelman was fantastic,Gronk, all of it. It was
fantastic. There's been some drama.Oh, Tom didn't want anyone to roast
Robert Kraft. He didn't want anyRobert Kraft jokes in there, which I
(40:06):
mean when you're putting rules on aroast where we have like the top comedians,
the top roasters. Andrew Scholz wasthere as well. He was fantastic.
When you have those guys and you'relike, hey, this is off
limits. I mean, comedians kindof thrive on their not being any limits.
So when you try and say, hey, don't do this comedian,
(40:29):
I mean, they were mostly justkind of like, oh okay, fine,
but you could tell that towards they'relike, uh yeah, like we're
gonna tell people. It's like youdid not want us mention this. Otherwise
we totally would have here's the jokethat I had written for Robert Kraft.
But yeah, there were a lotof jokes at Bill Belichick though, a
lot of Bill Belichick jokes and alot of time Brady jokes that. It
(40:50):
was all fantastic and definitely definitely recommendwatching it. I am out of time.
