You were listening to Sports on Deckwith Dave Gasper. Welcome to Sports on
Deck with Dave Gasper here on thirteenten WIBA. I am Dave Gasper.
Lots to get to on the showtoday as your Saturday afternoon continues. You
can follow me on Twitter at deGasper twenty four And really this week,
(00:33):
the Burgers their series, they're continuingon their road trip. They're in Boston
on the road, finishing up thisthree game set before they finally return home
on this Memorial Day weekend, andI'm Memorial Day they return and face Craig
Council and the Chicago Cubs. We'llget more into that later on here.
But the Burgers on this road trip, it hasn't exactly gone well. They
(00:56):
lost two out of three in Houston, they lost two out of three in
Miami, both teams under five hundred. Miami really one of the worst in
baseball, and not really off toa great start here on this road trip.
So there are some issues that Ithink a lot of people noticed,
and I certainly noticed as we werewatching that Miami series where the Brewers they
(01:19):
really weren't able to do much offensively. They were able to get stuff going
on Tuesday, just you know, with Trevor Rodgers walking four or five guys
and the offense as a whole,I mean, they only scored two runs
on Monday. Then they weren't ableto score anything on Wednesday. In the
final game of the series, hasisLozardo. Credit to him, he pitched
a great game. But at thesame time, you look at the lineups
(01:42):
that the Brewers were putting out there, and you had Owen Miller and Andrew
Monasterio and guys like that in thelineup every single day, and you know,
Joey Weimer was in there for oneof those games. That's what was
making up the lineup. Not inthe lineup was Bryce Terrang who's hitting three
(02:06):
to ten on the season. Notin the lineup with Sal Freelik, who's
hitting like two point fifty on theseason. Not the greatest season for Sal,
but still he's on the bench.Jake Bowers, who's hitting three hundred
something over the last three weeks,he was on the bench. Three of
your better hitters sitting on the benchthe entire series. They weren't in the
(02:30):
starting lineup once when they're pretty muchat this point every day. Guys especially
Bowers. Now with th Reese Hoskinsout, pretty much every day guys sitting
on the bench. Why because they'releft handed hitters, and because Miami had
three straight left handed starters. Now, it's not often that you run into
(02:52):
a team that has three left handedstarters in their rotation at all, let
alone facing all three of them ina row. So I understand, you
know, the occasional platoon thing. You get a guy a day off.
You know, a guy like Freelichor Terrain, you can get him a
day off here or there whenever youface a lefty. But when you got
three in a row, and theseguys are supposed to be your every day
(03:16):
players, every day players, BryceTerrang should be an All Star this year.
The way that he's hitting, thegold glove defense that he brings,
he is an every day type ofplayer. South Freelick also, I mean,
a top one hundred prospect, justlike Terrang, should be an everyday
type of player. But a leftyis in there, and these guys are
(03:39):
sitting on the bench just because they'realso left handed hitters. Now, I
understand that lefties generally tend to struggleagainst lefties, And you look at the
numbers. You look at the splits, it's definitely worse for them than when
they face righty's. At the sametime, it's really they haven't been that
bad against lefties. Freelick himself actuallythis year has been better numbers wise against
(04:03):
lefties, and he has been againstrighty's. Now, granted, it's been
a very small sample size for bothof them. For Freelick and for Trank,
Terraang has been better this year againstlefties than he was last year,
and you know, it's a niceimprovement, but I mean, he's been
better overall. And if these guysare going to be everyday players, why
(04:24):
are they not allowed to face lefties? Why are you sitting your best hitters.
Why are you sitting a guy who'shitting three ten and is an absolute
menace on the base pass and aGold Glove defender. Why are you sitting
him for a buck sixty hitting AndrewMonasterio. Why. I know monta Sterio
(04:45):
has had the home run in thatfirst game against Miami, but really,
why are you sitting Terraang for Honasterio? Why are you sitting Jake Bauers,
who's hitting three hundred something over thelast three weeks for Owen Miller, who's
like a buck fifty. Why playthe hot hand, Murph. And look,
(05:09):
he knows this. He's been aroundthe game long enough. And I
understand the lefty righty split thing.I do. But if these guys are
going to be your core, yourfuture, especially Terrag and Freelick, they're
going to have to get the opportunitiesto get to face left handed pitching.
(05:32):
How are you going to know ifthey can hit lefties if you never give
them the chance to hit lefties. In the few chances they've gotten this year,
they've done pretty well. They havesouth Freelick is five for fifteen against
lefties this year. That's a threethirty three batting average. I know batting
(05:59):
average is never but still it's overthree hundred. That's pretty good. Again,
it's only fifteen, it's only fifteenat bats, so you can't draw
too much of a conclusion from it. But at the same time, it's
gone pretty well so far. Whynot give him a couple more? These
guys are the future. The onlylefty that's allowed to face lefties in this
(06:21):
lineup is Christian Yelich. Do youhave to be an MVP in order to
be in the lineup against a lefthanded pitcher, do you have to?
And instead these guys are sitting TerangTrank's hitting like two twenty two against lefties
this year. Again, not great, I mean he's hitting three twenty one
against righties, but I mean he'sjust been phenomenal all year. But it's
(06:43):
still a major improvement for what hewas last year. And it's an improvement
on what Willia Doomas is doing.Williadamas is hitting a buck eighty eight against
lefties. Williadamas is hitting like twopoint thirty on the season. But Adamis
is there every single day. AndI'm not saying that a Domins doesn't deserve
to be because he's a great shortstopand he's got, you know, obviously
(07:06):
the ability. We've seen what hecan do before, but he hasn't shown
it on a consistent basis. Hisoffensive threat, he hasn't done it consistently.
He's been in a slump, He'sbeen hitting the ball hard, nothing's
really fallen. But he isn't greatagainst lefties, but he's in there against
every single one. Joey Ortiz,a right handed bat, has been awful
(07:30):
against lefties. He's been worse thanTerrang numbers wise, but he gets double
the opportunities because he's in there everysingle time to face a lefty. And
I'm not saying you should take JoeyOrtz out of the lineup, but if
your intent on keeping your best guysagainst lefties in you should have Terrang in
there, you should have Freelic inthere. And instead they're sitting on the
(07:53):
bench simply because of handedness. Theseguys are the future. Why are they
sitting? And then we wonder whythe offense doesn't do that much. When
you've got Owen Miller and Andrew Monasterioand Joey Weimer making up a third of
your lineup, then you'll wonder whythey don't hit. Duh, you got
(08:18):
your best hitters down on the bench. Now the bench situation is going to
need to improve at some point herefor Milwaukee, they're going to have to
get some help there. But whywhy are we not seeing Bryce? It
doesn't even have to be all threegames in that series. It doesn't have
(08:39):
to be. It can just beone game, even just one start against
a lefty in there. It couldhave done something. It gives him those
opportunities. How do you know whatkind of potential a guy has, How
do you know if he's going toreach it if he don't give him the
chance, if he don't give himthe opportunities, if you don't give him
the rep that he needs in orderto become that everyday guy, How do
(09:07):
you know if he can do itor how do you know that he can't
do it if you don't give himthe chance to actually prove that he can
do it or can't do it.Put him out there, put ter Rang
in the line. If he's hittingthree to ten, for crying out loud,
he hasn't been caught stealing all seasonin his eighteen stolen bases. Give
(09:31):
the guy a chance, give freelike a chance. You had all those
opportunities against a bad team in Miami. Let's be honest, it's a bad
team down there. This would havebeen the perfect chance to be like,
all right, guys, let's getyou some opportunities against the lefties. Maybe
(09:52):
that can help build some confidence. They get some experience with it, and
they can keep on moving up andcreeping more towards everyday players, and they
don't have to sit every single timethere's a lefty. I understand Tarrang was
a little banged up, and that'swhy they wanted to get him a little
bit of rest. But you stillcould, You could have started him one
of these games. He didn't.I don't I don't think he would need
(10:13):
all three of them off, andhe probably doesn't want all three of them
off. Same goes for Freelick.I mean, that dude played hockey.
I mean he may be banged up, but he's going to be out there,
and we didn't see him once inthat Miami series, and it just
it feels so much like the CraigCouncil era, where these young guys coming
(10:37):
up just because they're left handed hitters, they are disallowed from facing a left
handed pitcher. And these guys aresupposed to be your core. You've got
a lot of lefties coming up inthis group, Arrang Freelick, Garrett Mitchell's
a left handed hitter, Tyler Blacka left handed hitter. Mike Bowie down
in double a Bleoxi second round picklast year, he's a left handed hitter.
(11:00):
These guys are all projecting as everydayguys. Are you going to sit
every single one of them? Areyou gonna platoon every single one of those
guys? Terrang Freelick, Mitchell Black, Boby. Are you gonna platoon all
of them every time someone throws alefty out there, You're gonna take them
all out of the lineup. Youcan take the bat out of their hands.
(11:20):
If they're going to be everyday guys, they're going to have to face
them, and you're gonna have tounderstand, like, Okay, look,
maybe they're not as good against leftiesas they are against righties, but they
still present the best option for usto win. So put them out there.
(11:41):
This is the chance for them tolearn. Right. This is supposed
to be the learning experience for allof them. That's why all the young
guys, you know, they cameup last year and more young guys coming
up this year. It's a chancefor them to learn and adjust at the
big league level. And part ofthat next step is facing left handed pitching.
If you're going to trust them tobe the core, the next core
(12:03):
of your franchise, you're going tohave to trust them to face lefties.
You're gonna have to give them thatchance. Coming up, we'll dive more
into the Brewers Series and what's comingup for Milwaukee on Memorial Day. Here
as It's Memorial Day weekend. You'relistening to Sports on Deck with Dave Gasper
here on thirteen to ten WIBA Sportson Deck with Dave Gasper rolls on here
(12:43):
on your Saturday afternoon on this MemorialDay weekend. And the Brewers are finishing
up their road series, their roadtrip, nine game road trip in Boston
this weekend, and then they returnhome for a series against Chicago, four
games against and then three games againstthe White Sox. And those games against
(13:03):
the Cubs are the ones that everyone'sreally been looking forward to for several months
now. Ever since Craig Council madehis dramatic bolt too of the Chicago Cubs
for five years and forty million dollarsin an effort to reset the pay scale
for managers, this has been circledon the calendar. This is the first
(13:24):
time Craig Council is going to makehis return to American Family Field since that
happened. Obviously, the Birds playedthe Cubs earlier in May here, but
that was in Chicago in Wrigley, much different situation than what he will face
in Milwaukee when he comes back. It's a holiday, so that stadium is
(13:46):
going to be full. People havebeen buying tickets to this thing. This
is going to be a sellout game, not only because the Cubs are there,
and you know, Cubs fans aregoing to be coming up as well,
and there's going to be a decentamount of Cubs fans, I'm sure,
but Brewers fans this is going tobe their revenge moment because the feelings
(14:09):
are hard. Okay, this isnot something where it's no hard feelings.
Craig, thanks, you know, thanks for all the good times. You
know, have fun at your newplace. No, not with the Cubs.
It's not if he went to theMets, sure, fine, no
hard feelings, have fun, gettingall your money and hanging out with David
Stearns over there. Maybe maybe maybethat could have been fine, No hard
(14:31):
feelings. But when you go tothe Cubs and you know those kind of
little personal shots that come out thatthat did about about Counsel leaving and him
wanting to leave for a while, that kind of stuff, well now it's
personal, not not just for forthe team, but for the fans.
The way that he left who heleft for. There's hard feelings here.
(14:56):
Craig may not have any for Brewersfans, but Brewers fans have some for
him. So when he gets announcedand we go through these games, I'm
I'm expecting it to be to behostile. I mean, when we're gonna
be sitting there, we're going tobe hearing a lot of this. That's
(15:24):
going to be the reception for CraigCounsel. That that's what's gonna be.
They're gonna go through the lineups andthey're managed by number thirty, Craig Council,
and you're gonna get NonStop, NonStop. That's what you're gonna get.
Every time he goes out there fora pitching change, he steps out of
(15:48):
the dugout, every time he wantsto step out and argue with the umpires
about some sort of call, orhe tries to challenge a play that happens.
(16:17):
That's going to be the reaction. He is going to be Manny Machado
in twenty eighteen. That is thereception that I'm expecting. And I think
everyone is expecting to get for CraigCounsel. And you're like you, oh,
all the good times, the goldenera that he brought. What golden
era? I'm sorry, but onein nine in your last ten playoff games
(16:38):
and only getting out of the firstround once isn't that much of a golden
era. It's a golden era comparedto what we had before he arrived,
with just four playoff appearances in however, many freaking years, in nearly fifty
years. Four playoff appearances, andthen they're able to rattle off four in
(16:59):
a row, which which is great, but they should have been able to
do more with that and they didn't. And Craig Counsel, he is the
manager. As much as he's tocredit for all those wins and all that
success, you can also blame himfor also things not going well in the
postseason. They came close to aWorld Series, it didn't quite actually get
(17:19):
there. Then you're losing the wildcardgame, you lose in the first round
by batting Ryan Healey in an eliminationgame against Kurt You're batting Ryan Healy cleanup
in an elimination game against Kershaw. Why and then the whole team just kind
of falls apart. No one canhit. In twenty twenty one and then
(17:41):
twenty twenty three, Jesse Winker iskept on the roster and he's given clutch
at bats. What are we doingjust so many mistakes along the line.
But anyways, he is going tobe back for the first time. The
reception, it's going to be ugly, okay, And I'm I'm fully expecting
(18:02):
that kind of reaction from the crowd, and I think I think Craig is
expecting it too. He can tryto lie to himself all that he wants
about how, oh yeah, youknow, got a great relationship. It
doesn't change anything. I got greatfeelings, you know, towards them.
Nothing against Milwaukee is just you know, best thing for me and blah blah
blah blah blah, getting his eightmillion dollars a year. He can say
(18:22):
that and try to convince himself ofthat all that he wants. But the
rubber is going to meet the roadhere on Monday. That is the first
time that he's going to be comingback, and that is when it's going
to get seriously real for him. With how much this fan base now hates
Craig Council. There were those beforethat you know, didn't really like him.
(18:44):
You know that there's that group inevery single fan base that is never
happy with the manager. Okay, that that you're gonna find that anywhere you
could have the best manager there is, and you're gonna have a group of
people that are unhappy with him andthink he should go and think he's an
idiot. It happens everywhere. Butnow even those that were defending Counsel back
when he was the Brewer's manager noware no longer defending him. There's no
(19:07):
one defending him. I used tobe a Council defender. I'm not anymore,
not after this. I wonder.I wonder how he's going to react,
I really do, because he isgoing to see the signs in the
crowd. He is going to hearthe booze, and there's probably probably going
to be a whole bunch of otherstuff yelled from the people sitting behind and
(19:30):
around that Cubs dugout the reaction, and you know, the questions from the
media meeting up with all of them, and they're gonna be asking about it,
trying to get his feelings on it. He's gonna hate it. He's
gonna hate it so much. SoI need Milwaukee to kind of step up
(19:51):
here in this in this series,to be there in this game, for
this series, and to let himhave it obviously safely, you know,
don't shout anything, you know, too awful over there, you know,
try to keep it strictly to baseball. There's as much as you can with
the booing. You know, obviously, don't get don't get too carried away
(20:12):
here, not saying that, butlet him have it, let it,
let him feel the hurt that thathe caused there. Because again, the
reason Brewers fans, the reason allof us are angry with him and and
(20:37):
are no longer supportive of him,is because of who he went to and
how he did it. We allknew going in he was he was gonna
let his contract expire, see whatoffers came in, and then say,
okay, then you come back tothe Brewers, give them the chance to
match, and see if they door don't, and if they don't final
(21:00):
leave, okay, go wherever.Go to whoever's giving you the most money,
if it's New York or whatever else, go do it to one of
those open positions. But instead hetook a job that wasn't even open.
He took it with a rival, and he did not give the Brews a
chance match. So you're dead tous. That's that's pretty much the prevailing
(21:26):
feeling that that I get out therefrom you know, not only for me,
but everyone else that I talked to, all the all the other Brewers
fans that that I hear from,You're dead to us. That's the feeling,
and he is going to feel thaton Monday and throughout that whole series.
(21:48):
That's what he's going to get forfour days, all four days of
that series. That's that's what he'sgoing to get, especially on Monday.
There it's a holiday, everyone's gotthe day off. It's going to be
a sellout. That's that's going tobe the the feeling. So should be
(22:14):
a fun series, though it shouldbe very interesting. I'm excited to be
there on Monday, be at thatgame and witness the crowd reaction and see
how it all turns out. Butyou know it's going to be hostile,
you know it is. I thinkCouncil knows it's going to be hostile.
And hopefully it fires up the Brewerstoo. You know, with this road
(22:34):
trip they have been winning as much. I mean, the Cubs haven't been
playing super well. The Cubs nowplaying super well. You know, the
Brewers need to be fired up.And hopefully even though the Brewers the players
may not have that kind of animositytowards Council, but they also feed off
the energy in the building, right. I mean, you hear the players
(22:56):
talk about this all the time aboutyou know, the energy from the crowd,
how they can feel it it fuelsthem and that kind of stuff.
That's why you know you hear thecheering and the rising during those big moments
because it fuels those players going forwardto win those games. And hopefully that's
what this does for this Burgers team. Hopefully it fuels them to a win,
to a series win. A sweepwould be nice, but especially when
(23:18):
they're on a Memorial Day in thatfirst game back for Council, you can
get a couple of wins and reallyget this team fired up, because,
I mean, this road trip hasnot been going to plan and they're gonna
need They're gonna need to be attheir best. Pat Murphy's gonna downplay it.
(23:40):
The team's gonna downplay it. Howthey don't have any issue with Counsel,
but everyone else in that building will, all the fans who bought tickets
to be at that game, theydo. It means something to them.
It means something more than just agame to them. It's more than just
one game. It's more than justwin tonight. It's personal. It's personal
(24:04):
for Brewers fans. We got morecoming up. You're listening to Sports on
Deck with Dave Gasper here on thirteenten WIBA Sports on Deck with Dave Gasper
(24:37):
rolls on here on your Saturday afternoon. You can follow me on Twitter at
de Gasper twenty four. So aninteresting article came out this week from Buster
only over at ESPN talking about JoshHater. You know that guy, remember
him, Josh Hater, former Brewerscloser for several years, learning get traded
(25:00):
at the deadline in twenty twenty two, which basically caused the collapse of that
team and why they missed the playoffsby a game. Yeah, that guy.
So this article came out from onedetailing kind of the end of Hater's
tenure and how everything goes back tothe Brewers arbitration hearing against him, and
(25:25):
how Josh Hater set rules for himselfrestricting his own usage because the Brewers they
took him to arbitration and it gotugly. And you know, according to
this article, David Searns he warnedhim, He's like, this is going
to be bad. This is goingto be ugly. The Brewers used his
(25:45):
lack of saves against him, andthe Brewers brought up his tweets from back
when he was in high school thatsurfaced back during the back during his first
All Star game. Somehow everyone wentback and found his tweets and that was
really that was an embarrassing moment forhim, and the Brewers brought it up
(26:10):
and his arbitration, hearing, andhis lack of saves because he was a
multi ending reliever at the time.He was the best reliever in baseball,
but they used him in multiple inningsand they had Corey Kanable, so he
didn't have the saves totals. Soafter that, Josh Hater set three rules
(26:33):
for his own usage with the Brewers, and he made the Brewers agree to
it. The rules were that one, he would not pitch more than two
days in a row, so threegames in a row, Nope, not
doing it. He would not pitchmore than three outs, no longer doing
the multiple multiple innings. And numberthree, he would pitch only in a
(26:56):
saved situation or when the score wastied. So all those games that we
were watching, we're asking ourselves, you know, in a close game,
and you know, even though ifit's not a safe situation, why aren't
you pitching Josh Hater? Bring JoshHater in here? And the Brewers are
like, no, we'll bring insomeone else. Or it's like, hey,
it's a great spot bringing Hater toget the final out here in the
(27:17):
eighth and then come back in therefor the ninth. Nope, wouldn't do
it. They couldn't do it.Hater made the Brewers agree to those rules.
Stearns was just kind of like, what when they first kind of came
up with them, counsel he understoodand was like, all right, fine,
(27:38):
and that's just kind of where theyhad to go. The only recourse
for the Brewers, as Hater's agentpointed out, was to suspend Hater,
which they weren't going to do.So fine, that's what they did until
they eventually traded him in twenty twentytwo. Hater wanted to protect himself,
(28:00):
And I think this highlights just howbroken the arbitration system is and how horrible
of an idea it is to takeany of your players to an arbitration hearing.
It's just a horrible idea, andthat's what it led to if they
by taking Hater to this, itled to all of this. Hater was
(28:26):
upset over losing his arbitration case,as he should have been, because he
was the top reliever in baseball andthey weren't going to pay him like it
because he didn't have the saves becausehe was pitching multiple innings and just in
a completely different role. So hewas like, fine, if that's if
(28:47):
that's how I get paid, Ifjust raw saved totals is how I get
paid, I am only going todo what I can to maximize my save
opportunities. I'm only going to pitchin in one game or more at a
time. I'm only going to pitchand save situations. That way, he
could be available more often, hecould stay healthy, and he could rack
(29:08):
up the saves, which means hewould be able to earn more money.
So that's what he did, andhe's not gonna lift him until he gets
his long term contract, which theBrewers were not going to give him,
the Padres did not give him. Then he gets to free agency and no
one's really offering him much of anythingbecause he set these restrictions on himself.
At least that's what he believes it'sbecause he's set those restrictions on himself until
(29:33):
the astros finally like, okay,we need a reliever. We'll we'll get
Hater and we'll pay him. Andnow he's willing to do, you know,
multiple innings. He's willing to dowhatever role or situation that's needed.
It's like, okay, fine,It's just it's so upsetting, I feel
like to most Brewers fans. Imean, on the one hand, I
(29:56):
think most of us kind of alreadyknew, like just in two that this
was something that happened because the multipleinning stuff immediately stopped after that arbitration hearing,
like he was doing it all prearbitration, he would pitch on whatever
role necessary. And then after thatcontentious arbitration hearing, he's like no,
(30:18):
you know, he all of asudden, the Brewers just stop using him
for two innings at a time.I think most of us realize that that
wasn't a coincidence. Hater setting thoserules on himself is something that you really
don't see, you know, mostpictures, they'll just be like, I'll
do whatever it takes to help theball club. I mean, most of
them are trying to hold onto ajob. When you're Josh Hater, it's
(30:41):
a little bit different because you knowyou're going to have a job, and
you're on a big league team. You know that they're going to have you
in that closer's role and they're notgoing to demote you from it. With
the exception of those struggles that hehad during that summer of twenty twenty two,
but as Council mentioned in this article, that he was available, you
(31:03):
know, he pushed himself to beavailable, you know, as much as
he could, and that Council wasn'treally restricted in his usage of him that
much, you know, besides themultiple innings thing. So it's just seeing
this and just kind of seeing thebehind the scenes of how all of this
(31:23):
played out with Hater's usage and hiseventual trade. And I think that was
something that also it had to haveled to the Brewers deciding to trade him
when they did, you know, because they have these restrictions put on him
(31:44):
that pretty much no other picture inbaseball has, No other picture puts restrictions
on themselves, especially when they're inarbitration like that. No one else does
it. And then when he startsto struggle and he's not pitching that well.
It's like, are we really goingto put up with this for another
year and a half until he reachedhis free agency? Can we wait any
(32:07):
longer to get this done? Imean, how it all played out,
it was ugly. It was amess, and I mean for the Brewers
front office as well. They hadother things planned, They had other things
lined up after that Hater trade. They made that trade the day before the
trade deadline, and the guys theygot back, two of them they really
(32:30):
didn't want to keep. Robert Gasserwas the only one they really wanted to
keep. Rogers was a placeholder.Lamet and Ruiz were supposed to go elsewhere.
They didn't want to keep them longterm. But all those other trades
they had in the works fizzled outand they were just kind of left with
(32:50):
nothing. So that was kind ofa rough stretch there for the front office.
But it all started back at thatarbitration here. That's what this article
is really seeming to get at.It. It all goes back to then
and Hater putting his own restrictions, his own rules on his usage. You
just don't see it. The Brewerswere kind of stuck. They really they
(33:20):
had no choice really but to acceptit after they went through with that arbitration
hearing. Now, according to thisarticle as well, Stearns was trying to
put together an offer to avoid thatarbitration hearing right before they went into it.
But you know, as as Haterand his agent were looking, it's
(33:42):
like, we're looking to be paidlike we're the top reliever in baseball.
And the offer apparently did not reflectthat. And the Brewers had no reason
to offer that much more because,i mean, was that early in his
career. They don't need to givehim the long term deal. And really,
the Brewers kind of avoid long termdeals with pictures to begin with,
(34:06):
just because of the injury risk andyou never know what can happen with the
arms. I mean, they've doneit a couple of times, but you
know, with Freddy Peralta and AaronAshby. But even still those have been
well below market value type of deals. I mean, they got Freddy for
so cheap, they got Ashby forcheap, and even still Ashby, I
(34:27):
mean he got hurt and now he'snot pitching well, even down in Triple
A. Everyone else, they reallyget to one or two year deals when
it comes to pitchers. They didn'tsign Burns long term because they're not going
to invest long term in a picturelike that, not even though Burns doesn't
(34:50):
have any health issues. You know, he's never had that before and he's
dominant. The long term deal thatit would take to sign him, it's
not worth the risk in their estimation. Same thing with Hater, especially with
the volatility of relievers, it's notworth the risk. Hater had a two
(35:14):
ending appearance this year for Houston forthe first time since twenty nineteen. It's
been five years he has gone through. He went through all of arbitration without
having those two inning appearances, despitethe fact that he could do them because
(35:37):
he wanted to get paid. Hewanted to protect himself and get paid.
I understand where he's coming from, but at times it did feel like it
hamstrung the Brewers, not having himable to go multiple innings, not being
able to pitch him however many daysin a row when they needed them.
(35:58):
It felt like it hurt the teamtimes. And maybe that's where the Hater
trade in twenty twenty two makes alot more sense, I think, really,
I mean, it ended up beingthe best trade of that deadline.
The Brewers made two more trades afterthat, Matt Bush and Trevor Rosenthal,
which were freaking awful, just awfuldeals, but they had other stuff in
(36:22):
the works that just did not endup happening. But of the three deals
that they made, the Hater tradehas ended up being the best one.
Trading Ruiz for William Contreras and JoelPiumps has been phenomenal. Robert Gasser now
has come up and he's making hismark. So in time it's turned out
(36:45):
pretty well for the Brewers. Notas well as they were hoping at the
time. They had some big plansin place, but it's turned out to
be the best deal of that deadline. It's turned out to be to be
somewhat solid him. So hey,if there's a silver lining at least to
be had in this whole Josh Haterthing, you know, now we know
(37:07):
for sure why he was being heldback from those multiple ending things, why
he wasn't coming in in all thosebig situations where he could have used him.
It's because he set rules on himselfwhich we had never seen before.
No one had ever thought of it, because it had never been done before.
We'll come back we'll wrap things up. You're listening to Sports on Deck
(37:28):
with Dave Gasper here on thirteen tenwibat wrapping up the show here, just
(37:50):
a few more minutes left here inSports on Deck with Dave Gasper. And
you know, as I was watchingthe series in Miami for the Brewers and
watching Joe Ross leave after one inningwith a back injury. He's on the
injured list now, and watching theseMarlins pitchers, Weathers and Rogers and Lozardo
(38:15):
just kind of pitched pretty well againstthe Brewers, and knowing that the Marlins
are not going anywhere this year. They've already traded off Luis Rise, and
their pitchers are going to be thenext to go when it comes to the
trade deadline, I'm thinking, youknow, maybe Matt Arnold should should have
just made a call there to Miamiand just said, hey, can we
(38:35):
make a deal in time to getone of these pictures on our team playing
to Boston. That's what I wouldhave done, because just see, I
mean, Lozardo eight shutout innings onWednesday, just phenomenal, and Weathers,
you know, seven strong on Monday. I mean, it was, you
know, it was some great pitchingand they got some good pictures over there
(38:57):
that they are going to be willingto trade once trade deadline comes around.
And now that the Burgers are downRoss after already being down Junis and Miley
and Woodruff and a Hall, Imean, that's the whole rotation's worth.
That's that's gone, that's that's injured. So if i'm them, you know,
if starting pitching is a need,it is it is a big need.
(39:19):
Right now. You've got Bryce Wilsonfilling in in the rotation. You
have got Tobias Meyers back up tofill in the rotation. You got Gasers,
so you've got two rookies. Yougot a guy who you know,
he's just making his return to therotation. And you got Colin Ray who
is you know, a back endtype of arm and Freddy Pearlton. I
(39:39):
mean, you need help in thisgroup, you do. It's got to
come from somewhere. The internal reinforcementsare a lot of rookies. Depending on
rookies, the whole rest of theway is gonna be tough. You're going
to need help in Miami. Well, they got some pretty good pitchers down
there. I would gladly take HayUselzardo on this Brewers team or any one
(40:02):
of those other guys at the Brewersfaced they could use them. I am
