Deck with Dave Gasper here in thirteenten WIBA lots to get to you on
the show today. You can followme on Twitter at de Gasper twenty four.
Lots of great stuff coming up onthere all the time. Also editor
at reviewingthbrew dot com. Lots ofstuff going on on that site as well.
(00:34):
We got our studs and duds upfor the month of May. Lots
going on with the Brewers. Thisweekend, they got these series against the
Chicago Cubs, the first battles againstCraig Council after he left and got his
big bag of money from Chicago andleft the city that he had been in
(00:55):
for seventeen years that he grew upin and he was the hometown here before
decided to just, you know,I'm gonna betray that for a big old
bag of cash and see where ittakes me, and it's going to get
him quite a bit of booze. The first game back at Milwaukee for Council
is going to be on Memorial Day, so we still got that to look
(01:17):
forward to. But we got theseries this weekend against the Cubs in Wrigley,
So that is going to be interestinghow all that continues to shake out,
because the Birds appear to be ina feisty mood coming out of this
week. They're feeling a little feistyif you've watched any of the games from
(01:40):
the past week. They're not takingany crap right now. And now a
lot of their issues have been withthe umpires. The umpires have inserted themselves
into several several of these games inthe past week. But they've also,
you know, been a little edgywith the other team. So there's a
(02:02):
lot going on with that group. It all started. It all started all
the way back on Sunday when AaronJudge just throws his giant hand up to
break up a double play. Theumpires are like, no, that's that's
not interference. No, that's fine, was not intentional. Then they look
back after the game they're like,oh, yeah, that was kind of
(02:22):
intentional. Oopsies are bad oopsies,oh man. And then and then the
next day, Jake Bowers strikes out. His bat hits the head of the
catcher Rene Pinto, as the ballwas already past Pinto and it could have
allowed the tying run to score ona drop third strike in the ninth inning.
(02:46):
Instead, they called interference there andhe wasn't allowed to score. South
Freelic wasn't allowed to score. TheBirds ended up losing one nothing. Pat
Murphy gets himself ejected there. Thenhe criticizes the umpires after the game there
as well. And then Tuesday, more crap. Chris Guccioni decides all on
(03:10):
his own that Freddy Peralta intentionally hitJose Siri in the sixth inning, and
then he ejects the starting pitcher fromthe game. He ejects Freddy Perolta,
the ace of the Brewers' staff, the picture that people come to see,
(03:30):
the player that people are there tosee. People are not there to see
Chris Guccioni. People are there tosee Freddy Perolta. But Chris Guccioni said,
no, they're here to see me. So I'm gonna get rid of
Freddy Peerolta. I don't want peoplelooking at him. We got to get
him out of the game and say, now you hit him on purpose,
(03:51):
and then he'll talk a bunch ofcrap to Pat Murphy. Throw Pat Murphy
out of there too. Who needsthe manager? Who needs him? Getting
into a fighting match just shouting withPat Murphy. Umpires are supposed to be
walking away. They're supposed to justwalk away when the managers are yelling at
(04:13):
him like that. But now ChrisGuccioni said, I'm gonna scream right back
at you. Is no one inMajor League Baseball embarrassed by this? No
one? Does anyone care? Doesanyone care about the state of umpiring?
Does anyone care that the umpires threedays in a row inserted themselves into a
(04:33):
game and they got things wrong?Does anyone care? Are any of these
guys gonna get punished at all forthis? Is Chris Guccioni going to get
punished at all for instigating a fightthat ends up happening in the eighth inning,
for ejecting the starting pitcher unnecessarily, for getting into a shouting match with
(04:53):
a manager. Is anyone going topunish Chris Guccioni. No, they're not.
The league is not gonna punish him. The Umpire's Union's not gonna punish
them. Nothing's gonna happen to thatguy. Nothing's gonna happen to those umpiring
crews. They caused that brawl inthe eighth inning they caused it, but
(05:16):
they feel, oh no, wewere totally vindicated because there was a brawl.
It's a self fulfilling prophecy, youmorons. But these umpires don't care.
The league doesn't care. Nothing's gonnahappen, nothing's gonna happen to them.
Why should we expect anything different.Angel Hernandez still has a job.
(05:39):
He has a job despite being theworst umpire in baseball, although Chris Guccioni
is trying to give him a runfor his money there. They've inserted themselves
into these games, and it's notjust the Brewers that there's all these other
instances across the league of the umpiresmessing up early on this season. But
(06:03):
what's happening, what's being done aboutit? Nothing? Nothing's ever done about
it, which is how we getto a place like this because they don't
never do anything. They don't punishthe umpires for getting things wrong. A
couple of weeks ago, also involvingthe Yankees, Hunter Wendelstetz throws out Aaron
(06:25):
Boone for something a fan said,and he's like, I don't care who
said it, I'm throwing out Boone. Now, granted Boone has a reputation
for yelling at umpires, but stillit's not like they don't deserve it some
of the times at least. Butthis has been one ridiculous ump show after
another, and that just creates moreand more frustration that's going to boil over.
(06:49):
So Murphy ends up getting suspended fortwo games. He suspended for the
first game of the CUB series.Freddy Peralta gets suspended for five games,
abner U Rebase suspended for six.I mean, granted, he did start
a brawl with Siri and throw thefirst punch, so I get it for
you, Rebay Peralta, though verydebatable judgment call that he intentionally threw at
(07:12):
Siri. But he gets five gamesbecause starters have to miss at least one
start. That's why he gets five. If he gets two games, that
doesn't really do anything, so theyhave to give him five. Just still
ludicrous, but whatever, But thebrawl just seemed to prove the point.
The brawl two innings later is like, oh yeah, there was bad blood,
so par Alta must have intentionally hithim. So now you lose your
(07:35):
starter, You lose your ace starterfor five games, you lose him for
one turn through the rotation he's appealing. My guess is it's not going to
get repealed. It's not gonna betaken away. He's still gonna end up
being suspended. Now you're just pushingit back further and further. It's dumb,
(07:59):
all of this. It's just beenso dumb and stupid and avoidable.
It's all so avoidable. If Guccionijust didn't throw him out, you wouldn't
have had that brawl. But Guccioniprobably was also pissed because of the night
(08:20):
before on the Jake Bauers interference callthat Murphy was talking smack and after the
game he's like, they got itwrong. Now, based on the rule
book, I think they might havegotten it right there on Monday night with
the interference call, but Murphy israiling against him after the game, saying
(08:41):
it's a bad rule or bad ruling, whatever it is. He disagreed with
the call, so that I wouldassume leads to Guccioni just being like,
all right, well, this guy'scompletely wrong about the rules, and now
he's arguing to me again about therules, so he must have taken it
(09:01):
personally, which is something that youshouldn't do. As an umpire, So
he gets in the face of PatMurphy and starts cursing at him, calling
him terrible. Blah blah blah. You can see the John Boy video lip
reading breakdown on Twitter. It wasincredible. I absolutely love Murph even more
(09:26):
after that. But it was allbrought on by what the umpires did before.
Murphy may have brought a little biton himself by criticizing them the day
before. Then after the game he'slike, I'm gonna kind of hold what
I'm gonna say here until we getmore information out there. And then and
(09:50):
then on Wednesday, we think,oh, we're finally making it through a
game without the umpires inserting themselves. And then Thiago Vieira is trying to come
in and pitch with the same glove, the same glove that he pitched in
the night before that there were noproblems with. He tries to come into
the game with the same glove andthe Empires are like, no, that's
(10:13):
an illegal glove. The color schemeis too off, it's too close to
white or something, so they takehis glove, the exact same glove he
wore the night before when he pitchedno issues, But now it's a problem.
(10:33):
Oh my god, give me abreak, Give me a break.
It's absolutely absurd. What has beenhappening with umpiring this season. It has
been awful, especially this past week, just awful. But what's going to
be done about it? Absolutely nothing, Nothing ever gets done about it,
(10:58):
at least not that we publicly know. At least the umpires in the Yankee
Series, they admitted they messed upon that judge slide. They looked back
after the game, They're like, yeah, you know, we actually missed
that call. We looked back atthe video. It looked intentional. Actually
we didn't think it was intentional inthe moment, but when you look back,
(11:18):
it looked pretty intentional. We missedthat one. Sorry. At least
they admitted it. I'll give themprops for that. But Chris Guccioni's crew,
the one for the Race series, completely different crew. They did not
admit to any mix ups. Theydid not admit to any faults, and
(11:41):
it led to a brawl. Itled to suspensions, and it led to
some top players being held held offthe field, and the Bards losing their
manager for two games, and theplayers that the people want to see they
(12:01):
cannot see anymore because these umpires insertedthemselves into the game, causing problems and
making the story about them, andI am absolutely sick of it. Coming
up more baseball talk here as Brewersare taking on the Cubs this weekend.
(12:22):
You're listening to Sports on Deck.Dave gasper here on thirteen ten Wiba by
the Light block a duce of therunner in the night Plane by the Light.
(12:46):
It's embarrassing, really. MLB allowsthis to just kind of continue.
Umpires really going unchecked and inserting themselvesinto games, causing brawls. But they
feel justified. They feel vindicated. Now once that brawl broke out between Ureba
(13:11):
and Jose Siri, they're gonna feellike, oh yeah, yeah, the
umpire was right and determining that therewas bad blood, there were bad intentions
between the Brewers and Jose Siri, and that manifested itself in a brawl.
It's a self fulfilling prophecy. Youcreated the circumstances for that to happen.
(13:35):
You believed, oh, this iswhat's going on, so you created the
circumstances for it to happen, andthen it happened. So I can be
like, oh, well, Icalled it. I was right ridiculous.
Dave Gasper here with you on Sportson Deck with Dave gasper here on thirteen
ten WIBA. The Brewers are nowlooking forward to this Cubs series. They're
(14:00):
going they're losing their manager, PatMurphy for the first game of this Cub
series. Freddy Peralta, he's appealinghis suspension. Avenue Grebay, he is
appealing his but he has also beenoptioned down to Triple A. After Wednesday's
game, and the Bres called upCorbin Martin in his place. No,
(14:22):
not the other Corbin, a differentCorbyn. This this guy. Corbyn Martin
claimed him off waivers a couple ofweeks ago, stashed him down there in
Triple A Nashville, and now they'recalling him up and he's going to be
pitching out of that bullpen for thetime being. We'll see what the appeals
do for those players. Pat Murphydid not appeal his suspension. All three
(14:46):
players suspended are appealing. Sirie couldprobably get his down to two games,
Eibay, maybe down to five.Peralta. I don't know if they're going
to diminish his at all, becausethey've determined that there was intent and since
he's a starter. I mean,if you cut his suspension from five to
two, I mean, really, what's that doing for you in terms of
(15:11):
making them skip a start? Andunless they you know, it depends on
when these come down too. Youknow, if he's able to make his
next scheduled start before the appeal happens, what they say, and maybe then
it's like, Okay, he makeshis next scheduled start, then he gets
a five game suspension, and thenit's like, okay, he's really only
(15:31):
pushed back a day. So eh, I don't know. Either way,
you're going to be losing Freddy mostlikely for a bit. He's going to
be out out of rotation, outof sink, which leaves Colin Ray as
your top starting pitcher. Colin Raywould be the Brewer's best starter. Well,
(15:54):
Freddy Peralta is suspended. It wasn'tthat long ago, people, It
was not that long ago that thisrotation was not only led by Freddy Peralta,
but also Corbyn Burns and Brandon Woodruff. Those were your top three guys,
(16:15):
three legitimate ace type pitchers atop thisrotation. It was not that long
ago, only last September, notthat long at all. And now Colin
Ray and Joe Ross and Tobias Myersare the guys leading the group. Bryce
(16:41):
Wilson too, He's in there,a converted reliever who's a reliever all of
last year. He'd been a starterfor most of his career. Couldn't really
hack it as a starter with wherehe was before in Atlanta and Pittsburgh.
Comes to Milwaukee, goes to thebullpen, thrives. Now they've got him
basically straight, which beck as astarter. Not an ideal situation, certainly
(17:04):
not. It's even less ideals.Losing Wade Miley for the season after just
two starts and seven innings, WadeMiley undergoing Tommy John surgery. He's out
for the whole year, thirty sevenyears old. He ain't coming back.
(17:25):
I love Wade Miley. I know, I know he's competitive. I know
he's going to try to come back, but he ain't coming back. Come
on at thirty eight years old,mid season next year, coming off Tommy
John. No way, love WadeMiley. Rooting for the guy, but
if I'm putting money on it,it's not happening. And it's terrible because
(17:48):
the Brewers were relying on him. They were going to be counting on him
for some big innings this year.He said he had expectations of throwing,
of making thirty starts this season. Is yeah, why now, why can't
I make thirty starts? Made two? Just two? Now that it's not
(18:08):
all of his fault, obviously, but still losing Miley, losing that veteran
presence in the rotation, Losing aninnings eater like him, It hurts because
he need innings. You need inningsfrom this group that you're just simply not
getting right now, which is whatmakes it all the more ridiculous. How
(18:32):
Chris Guccioni ejected Freddy praulta in thesixth when he was cruising along. You
could have gotten another two innings outof him at least he was cruising,
but nope, umpires got to insertthemselves and they should be embarrassed, but
they're not. They have no shame, none at all. But then that
(18:56):
moves now to the weekend series againstChicago Cup and the Brewers are having their
reunion against their former manager Greg Counsel. Oh no, sorry, Craig Counsel,
My bad, the guy who leftfor five years and forty million dollars
a big old bag of cash handedto him by the team that he spent
(19:18):
years tormenting, So no issue withit at all, just up and did
it out of the blue, despitethe fact that they didn't even have a
vacancy. And all this is goingto be coming back up, and they're
gonna ask Kricky Weeks, and they'regonna ask Pat Murphy, and they're going
to ask the players all their opinionson facing Craig council again for the first
(19:41):
time, and all their answers aresome variation of the same thing. That's
just another game. You know, happy for Craig getting his money, but
there's no extra animosity towards him,and YadA, YadA, YadA. It's
fine for the players to think that. I mean the players obviously no counsel
(20:03):
on a personal level, at leastmost of them, all the ones that
were here last year or for thepast several years. There's only a couple
of them who have been there foryou know, a couple couple of years.
But still all the ones who havebeen managed by them, you know,
I don't think they're gonna have thatmuch animosity towards him personally, certainly
not the animosity that we had seenwith the umpiring crew in the race series.
(20:29):
But the Brews, like I wassaying, they're feeling feisty right about
now, and perhaps that could bubblesome things up. With Craig Council being
out there, the crowd, youknow, is going to be energetic.
They're gonna be Bruis fans down there. They're gonna be booing, and it's
gonna be Cubs fans, you know, counter cheering, I guess. But
(20:51):
there's always animosity in Cubs Brewers. There's always just something to that rivalry.
We've seen it on the field thesepast several years. There has all always
been that kind of animosity. Isthere extra animosity with Craig Counsel now over
there? Well in the stands thereis, yes. On the field,
I don't think so. I don'tthink so. I really don't think there
(21:14):
is. I don't think the playersare going to have that any extra motivation,
extra anger, extra emotion at allbecause Craig Council's on the other side.
I don't think that's there, truly. I really don't think that's there.
Now. As a fan, you'dkind of like there to be some,
(21:40):
you know, because you have thatloyalty to this team. You have
that loyalty to the Brewers in toMilwaukee, and when Counsel left, it
was a massive betrayal of that loyalty. You thought you had a guy who's
gonna be there with you for thelong haul. He grew up around here,
(22:00):
been a Brewer forever. This washis hometown team. He was one
of us. Thought it was amatch made in heaven forever, and then
just out of nowhere, in thespan of just a couple of days,
poof gone. All that time togethermeans nothing, meant absolutely nothing. He
(22:30):
leaves, goes for greener pastures, emphasis on greener, with all that big
old begat cash, and it hurts, it stings. But with Council gone,
Pat Murphy has taken over and theBrewers players and fans themselves alike have
(22:52):
gravitated towards personality of Pat Murphy asa manager. It's given this team a
bit of an edge, something thatthey had lacked in the last couple of
years, allowing their personality to flourish. This team is cooking, they're playing
(23:15):
well. They're in first place, facing off against Cubs who are gaming back
big series. It's gonna be abig series. All the games this year
against the Cubs are gonna be bigseries. All the games for the next
several years, as long as councilsover there are going to be big series.
But the Cubs are a good team. They're gonna be battling it out
(23:37):
with the Brewers for the NL Centralfor pretty much the rest of the season.
It's gonna be those two teams,So all those matchups matter, all
of them. This is the firsttime that the Brewers are seeing them.
The players, the coaches, theymight all downplay it, but we all
(24:02):
know this rivalry has taken a stepup lots more to get to coming up.
Stick with us. You're listening toSports on Deck with Dave Gasper here
on thirteen to ten WIBA. Sportson Deck with Dave Gasper rolls on here
(24:33):
on your Saturday afternoon. We area month into the Major League Baseball regular
season, and at the month mark, there are several studs and duds to
talk about. With their performances. We've reached kind of the point now where
you can really kind of see,Okay, who's playing well, who's not.
We're beyond just the small sample sizefor most of these hitters, especially
(25:00):
these everyday guys, you know, they're up over one hundred at bats right
now or they're getting very close toit. So that's where you're kind of
getting to the point where you canmake some judgments on what these guys are
doing and how they're playing. Sothat's where we play a friendly game of
studs and duds. So we look. We'll look first at the studs because
(25:22):
I'm a pretty positive person person usuallyI like to be on the positive side.
So we'll look at the studs. And we got four studs here,
we got three duds, and wegot one guy in between. We'll talk
about that. But starting on thestud side of things. For the offense,
(25:45):
William Contreras, that is exactly wherewe have to start. William Contreras
has been an absolute stud this season. In his thirty games that he's played
heading into this weekend, hitting threeforty five five homers, twenty five RBIs,
nine to fifty eight ohps, hehas been exceptional. He has been
(26:11):
playing every single day, either behindthe plate or at DH. It's been
playing every day. He has beena force atop the lineup, hitting for
average, hitting for power. Heis arguably the best catcher in baseball.
Right now, you could say WilliamContreras is the best catcher in baseball,
what he does offensively, what he'sbeen doing defensively, throwing out base runners
(26:34):
because it's all stolen based crazy rightnow across Major League Baseball. They have
changed the rules to try to increasestolen bases, and William Contreras has done
a pretty good job of throwing themout. The Brewers haven't been thrown out
very much when they're stealing, theyreally have not. They have been caught
a grand total of seven times thisseason. Seven times. The only guy
(27:00):
who had been caught more than onceis south Frielick has been caught twice on
six attempts. Bryce Terrag has notbeen caught at all in fourteen steel attempts.
But we'll get to him a bitlater here. But William Contreras is
our first stud of the month ofApril and now heading into the month of
(27:21):
May. He has just been incredibleevery single day out there and just leading
the team in batting average and onbase percentage and slugging percentage and ops.
With the exception of the guys who'veonly played a small handful of games,
Christian Yelich Tyler Black. Their numbersare higher, but Yalich has only played
(27:41):
eleven games because of the back issue. Tyler Black has only been enough for
a handful, so I don't countthem quite yet. But Tyler Black did
have a pretty studley MLB debut. But moving on, so William Contreras is
our first stud for the Brews ofthis season. Now over to the duds.
(28:03):
Who is a dud who is theexact opposite of what William Contreras is
doing at the plate, and thatis another than Jake Bowers. Now,
if any of you have followed meon Twitter or listen to the show back
when you know Bowers was brought in, you know that I have never really
been a fan of Jake Bowers.I did not like when he was brought
in. I never thought he wasgoing to be good. I thought he
(28:25):
was going to be designated for assignmentbefore he reached the All Star break,
possibly before we reached June. There'sstill time for that. But Jake Bowers,
he's certainly putting himself on that path. He's hitting a buck ninety,
He's striking out thirty seven percent ofthe time, He's got twenty six k's
in sixty three at bats, He'sonly drawn four walks six fifteen ops.
(28:48):
It's really kind of been buoyed bya pair of homers there. He's had
a couple of a couple of youknow, nice heads. Had a three
ye on homer against the Yankees therelast Sunday was big. But overall,
Jake Bowers has been awful. It'sbeen nothing special defensively over at first base,
striking out a ridiculous amount of timesand not getting a ton of hits.
(29:15):
He's just not Jake Bowers has beena dud. Yeah, rees Hoskins
over there first base. Now yougot Tyler Black who is on the roster
and he's been getting a lot oftime at first base down in the minor
leagues. That's kind of what hisposition could be going forward. And you
know, Tyler Black is a backupfirst baseman in dh That's kind of Jake
(29:37):
Bowers's role right now. The Brewersare moving him to left field for the
most part now with Yellow chout andGarrett Mitchell out and Joey Weimer not playing
well. Joey Weimer is also kindof qualified as a dud, but he
hasn't really you know, he wasdown in the minor leagues for the first
couple of weeks, so I'm notgoing to include him on this list.
(29:59):
But he has not looked great either. But Jake Bowers, he's been here
the whole time and he has struggledmightily. And if this keeps up,
I mean, once Yelich gets back, once one of those outfielders gets back
healthy, if Black continues to playwell over there at first base, I
don't see a room for Jake Bauerson this roster. I really really don't.
(30:22):
So he's gonna have to pick itup in the month of May.
If he's going to be employed bythis team in the month of June.
That's how much of a dud hehas been. Moving back to the positive
side of things, back on thestud side, continuing with the hitters here,
(30:45):
Bryce Terrang, you are a studthis year. He has been absolutely
phenomenal, playing just about every singleday twenty eight games heading into this weekend,
just about one hundred at bats.Bryce Trang hitting three yes, an
eight h three ops, pair ofhomers, six doubles, ten walks,
(31:07):
just fifteen strikeouts and fourteen stolen basehas never been caught once. He's leading
the team. He's right around theleague lead in stolen bases with what he's
been able to do. He isgetting on base, he's hitting for high
average. He is maintaining that highaverage. This is the type of player
that the Birds were expecting when hecame up last year, when they drafted
(31:30):
him in the first round, allthe way back in twenty eighteen. This
is the type of guy they werelooking for, a guy who can get
on base. He's not going toprovide too much power for you, but
he can get on base. Heis fast, he will steal bases.
He's providing Gold Glove defense over thereat second base. He has been exceptional.
He has taken a quantum leap.As Pat Murphy put it back in
(31:52):
spring training, he believed Terrang wasprimed for a quantum leap, and so
far a quantum leap. He hastaken three to zero nine. That's nearly
one hundred points better than his battingaverage last year. He was around two
eighteen last year for his batting average. He's on base percentage two eighty five
this year three seventy. He isgetting on base so much more often.
(32:19):
He is stealing bases. He isnot getting caught. He is doing his
job and doing it well. Bryceteng has been everything you could possibly ask
of him this year. He hasbeen a stud, gold glove defense,
high average, not much power, but again you don't need it. Stealing
(32:45):
bases and a gold glove caliber defenseat second base, that's all you need.
That's all you need Bryce Terrang tobe, and that's everything that he's
been. If he can keep uphitting around three three hundred here with that
on base percentage around three seventy threeseventy five, at the rate he can
(33:06):
steal bases, he is going tobe a menace for you. He's he's
gonna be an absolute stud. Lastyear he stole twenty six bases with a
two eighty five on base percentage. Now he's up in the three seventies.
He's already more than halfway there, and we're a month into the season.
He's already over halfway till last year'sstolen base total. Terrang is gonna put
(33:32):
up some numbers this year. He'salready putting up numbers and eight h three
to ops for a guy with verylittle pop, you love to see it.
Bryce Trang absolute stud. Alright,Moving on back to the duds.
Now, Abner Yuiba has been abit of a dud. It's not been
great. Six ninety one era, twelve walks and fourteen and a third innings.
(33:55):
He's just been optioned back down.He started a fight with j Siri.
He threw a couple of slaps. He missed on all of those,
just like he was missing the strikezone a whole bunch and a lot of
those outings lately. You know thegame on Sunday where they missed the judge
runner interference call. It then turnedinto seven runs and a blowout win for
(34:17):
the Yankees. Walk hit walk hitwalk hit that that ur Rebay gave up
just was not able to get anotherout to get out of that inning.
Granted it was a bad call bythe Yumps, but if Reba gets an
out anywhere along the line there,it's not as big of a deal.
But you Rebay struggled with that. Then he starts a fight, and then
he appeals and he pitches on Wednesdayand he gives up another on there,
(34:40):
and it's just like, okay, buddy, you need to get that command
back under control. He struggled withthat with those twelve walks and fourteen innings.
That is that is not great. So that's a dud Abner you rebay
so far this season. Moving backto the Studs real quickly here back onto
(35:00):
the pitching side, and we'll stayin that bullpen. We'll go with Brian
Hudson, who has been a Studsince coming over zero point five to two
ER, zero point five to twoERA in twelve games, covering seventeen and
a third, giving up to sevenhits, just one run, five walks,
nineteen strikeouts, a zero point sixtynine whip. It has been phenomenal
(35:23):
for Brian Hudson. The six footeight lefty coming over got him from the
Dodgers, and I'll admit that backwhen they made that move to get Hudson,
I was a little leery of howmuch they gave up. They paid
a lot of money for that prospect, Justin Chambers out of last year's draft
pool, paid a lot of moneyfor that guy. But granted he was
(35:45):
a lottery ticket that had undergone TommyJohn drafted out of high school several years
away. Hudson was does any forassignment. I thought it was a bit
of a high price to pay.I really did. So far, that
price has been worth it, BrianHudson, he has been an absolute stud
out of that bullpen. All right, another dud here. DL Hall qualifies
(36:09):
as a dud. He is nowon the injured list. DL is on
the IL. It used to becalled the DL but now it's the IL
for political correctness. I believe theymade that change a couple of years ago.
So DL Hall seven seventy one ERA. In his four starts before getting
hurt with a knees brain, thevelocity was not there in his fastball sixteen
(36:30):
and a third fourteen earned runs, ten walks thirteen k's not great. There
were concerns that DL Hall may needto be optioned down to the miners or
taken out of the rotation entirely afterjust four starts. Then the knees brain
puts him on the IL. Sohe's going to get that figured out.
But it was it was a dudof a first month for DL Haull.
(36:52):
The Brewers are going to be dependingon him to fill the hole left by
Corbyn Burns in that trade. Theygot Hall because I believe he could be
that ace going forward, and throughhis first four starts he did not prove
he was capable of that he wasnot able to go deep into games.
You know, just sixteen innings infour starts, averaging four innings a starts.
(37:14):
That's not good for a starting pitcher. So dl Hall qualifies as a
dud. We'll see what happens whenhe gets back healthy. Hopefully he can
make some adjustments and start being successful. One more stud here to talk about,
and that is, of course FreddyPeralta, who has been phenomenal in
his six starts three twenty one ERAforty five strikeouts in thirty three and two
(37:38):
thirds innings, just nine walks, point eighty six whip. Freddy Pralta has
stepped up as the ace, hasbeen everything you could ask of him in
that role, without burns, withoutwoodruff. Freddy Perlta has proven he can
be that guy. He has beena stud leading this rotation. He might
be suspended for a start, buthe has been an absolute stud in this
(38:04):
rotation. One more guy I wantto mention here. It's kind of an
in between. I don't want tocall him a dud, but he certainly
hasn't been a stud. And that'sJackson Curio. Now, he's obviously had
the most type of anyone he hasdone some phenomenal things, hitting four home
runs and just you know, gettingsome of these hits, doing things that
hadn't been done since Robin Yunt orPaul Mollador or whoever back in the day,
(38:28):
just as such a young player, you know, joining a very small
list of players who have done thingsat such a young age. Four home
runs first seventeen games, things likethat. But overall, Jackson Cherio is
hitting two oh six the two fiftyseven on base percentage of six o eight
oh ps, you know, strikingout. He's leading the team in strikeouts
(38:51):
with thirty four, leading the teamby a lot. Next closest is twenty
seven strikeouts for both Willie Domas andWilliam Contreras, both of who him have
about twenty ish more at bats thanCheerio. Cheerio has scuffled of late.
Now. I thought he would scufflea little bit in April as pictures adjust
(39:12):
to him. But now he's gotto adjust back. Hopefully he can.
But it's not quite bad enough thatI would call him a dud, because
there's just been so much hype aroundhim. He's so young, and he
has done some things that's just noother player has really done at that kind
of age with the bass hits andthings like that, so I'm not quite
(39:37):
gonna put Cheerio neither categories kind ofin between. He's done some studley things,
he's done some dudley things, buthe is someone to keep an eye
on because he is the key pieceof this future. We'll come back quickly
and wrap things up. You're listeningto Sports on Decuity of Gasper here in
