You were listening to Sports on Deckwith Dave Gasper. Welcome to Sports on
Deck with Dave Gasper here on thirteenten w IBA. I am Dave Gasper.
Be sure to follow me on Twitterat d Gasper twenty four. I
got lots of stuff going up onthere all the time, and it's just
it's a busy time of year,it really is. We got all the
(00:30):
sports really converging at once. Wegot the end of the baseball regular season,
we got football season, we gothockey season starting, we got NBA
is gonna be starting soon, Collegebasketball is gonna be starting soon. It
is just everything coming in at once, and it is fantastic. It's exhausting,
but it's fantastic. But we doit all here for you. I
(00:51):
do it for you so a lotI want to get to on the show
today. I want to talk aboutthe Brewers winning the nl Central, moving
on to the playoffs. The regularseason and is coming to an end this
weekend. Wildcard Round is starting onTuesday. We'll get into that in a
bit, but I got to startwith the Green Bay Packers and Thursday night
(01:12):
football because that game was a disaster, don't I can't think of any other
word for it other than a disaster. They got punched in the mouth early.
They weren't able to get anything goingin the first quarter. At the
end of the first they're down fourteento three. At halftime, they're down
twenty seven to three, and it'sbad. It was just a disaster.
(01:37):
It was that, there's no otherway around it. That first half.
They just got thoroughly outclassed by theDetroit Lions, and they were not able
to make it up. They wereable to make it close or close interesting
in the second half, but notquite able to get all the way there.
There were a lot of mistakes thatwere made, quay Walker jumping over
(01:57):
the long snapper in a field goalattempt that was a problem, and just
mistakes and just poor played, justnot playing well enough. And it just
shows that that this Green Bay Packersteam has so much more to go now.
(02:19):
Last week against the Saints, theydidn't look that great for most of
that game either. They were shutout in the first half, they were
shut out going into the fourth quarter, and then they came all the way
back and wanted in a miraculous comeback. It was great. Everyone's feeling good.
We're on top of the mountain. This is so fun. And this
(02:40):
is the ups and downs with thefirst year's starting quarterback. Now, there
were some mistakes that Jordan Love made. This wasn't all on Jordan's Love.
He did not have much time tosit back there in the pocket and pass
the ball. His protection was notgreat. Got sacked five times by the
(03:02):
Lions, under pressure all night long. Not Able to get much going offense.
Too many. Three notes and AaronJones, even though he was active,
six touches six five carries for eighteenyards, one catch for minus four.
(03:29):
Six touches on twenty snaps. Now, look, I get that Aaron
Jones was on a pitch County. He's coming back from the hamstring injury and
they want to protect him. Thisis a short week. You don't want
to overload him that first came back. Totally get it. You also got
(03:50):
to maximize him when he's on thefield. Being out there for twenty snaps
and only getting the ball on sixof them, it's not great. I'd
like to see more of actual AaronJones. And same thing with aj Dillon
only had five carries as well, for eleven yards. Five carries for eleven
(04:13):
yards, that's not a great performancefrom aj Dillon. Didn't make it catch
at all either. Five touches that'sall aj Dillon had. Now, Also,
first half you end up going downby a lot. You kind of
gotta get away from the run game. You don't have time to chew the
clock. You gotta start passing theball in order to try and catch up.
(04:34):
I get it, you do.But we do this song and dance
every other week. It seems likefor the past several years, where the
first half goes by, everyone's wondering, where's Aaron Jones, where's the running
game? Why don't we go awayfrom Aaron Jones? Why isn't he getting
(04:55):
the football? And then the Packerslose and Matt la floor sits up there
at the podium and he's like, yeah, we gotta we gotta fix that.
We gotta get Aaron Jones ball more. Aren't you in charge? Aren't
you the head coach, Matt Lafleur. How many times do we have to
(05:17):
go through this where Aaron Jones isn'ta big part of the offense. And
then we get afterwards and we're like, yeah, we gotta we gotta make
him a bigger part of the offense. We gotta get him the ball more.
When you do get him the ballmore, your offense works, you
score, you move the ball, and it's like, oh wow, this
(05:42):
is great. This offense is workingbeautifully. And then we go away from
Aaron Jones again for another game ortwo, and then Matt la Floor comes
back and we're all just like, where's Aaron Jones And he's like, yeah,
we gotta we gotta do a betterjob of getting him the football.
How many times do we have togo through this lesson until the Packers finally
(06:05):
learn about feeding Aaron Jones. Whenyou give Aaron Jones the football, good
things tend to happen. I understandhe was on a pitch count, but
when But when you have your bestplaymaker on offense on a pitch count,
(06:29):
you have to maximize those pitches. You have to maximize the times that he
is on the field. Five carriesin a whole game for Aaron Jones is
not enough. Now, Hopefully withthis extended week of rest here since they
(06:50):
played early here on Thursday, withyou know coming up on next week,
hopefully he'll be able to play more. In Week five, Packer is gonna
be taken on the Raiders next week. Hopefully we'll see a lot more of
Aaron Jones during that game, becauseif we continue to see Aaron Jones for
(07:15):
only five carries, we're gonna havea lot of games that look just like
this, where the offense can't getgoing, the defense is going to be
out there for way too long, they won't get arrest and eventually they're gonna
get smoked. It's part of theprocess. It's going to be frustrating.
(07:36):
It's something we haven't gone through ina while. For the first year starting
quarterback. Again, this isn't allon Love, but there were parts of
I mean, Love did have acouple of interceptions. There were deficiencies in
(07:58):
this offense and in this team thatin the past Aaron Rodgers would simply make
up for. Jordan Love doesn't quitehave the Aaron Rodgers' ability to make up
for the deficiencies on the rest ofthe team just yet. He did a
great job with the comeback in Weekthree against the Saints, did a great
(08:18):
job of that, but in Weektwo against the Falcons, Jordan Love couldn't
make up for the defensive collapse inthe fourth quarter. Had a chance for
a game winning drive at the end, couldn't get a completion now here against
the Lions trying to lead a latecharge and wasn't quite able to get going,
(08:43):
wasn't able to do enough on offense. It's part of the growing pains,
it is. It's going to befrustrating at times because we haven't gone
through something like this before. Thereare good pieces on this team, but
they're not there quite yet. Andright now, the Lions do look like
(09:07):
the class of the NFC North. The Bears are nowhere close. The Vikings
are off to an awful start thisyear, which is fantastic, by the
way, But then the Packers arehanging around. It's like, okay,
here's here's your top two teams inthe NSC North. These are the two
that are gonna be battling for thedivision. And after this game, it
(09:31):
doesn't look like it's gonna be muchof a battle. It looks like Detroit's
already got a one. They tookdown Green Bay with ease in Lambeau.
Next time these two teams face off, it's gonna be in Detroit. It's
not gonna be any easier for greenBay. Now, granted, at that
(09:52):
point, maybe they'll have more guyshealthy. Maybe you know, Jordan Love
will have he'll have some more experienceunder his belt. Maybe he'll better.
Maybe Matt Lafleur will finally learn thelesson of feeding Aaron Jones the football.
Maybe he'll finally learn that one forgood. Who knows a lot can happen
(10:13):
between now and that. Coming up, The Milwaukee Brewers are NL Central champions
and the playoffs are just around thecorner. We'll get into that coming up
here on Sports on Deck with DaveGasper right here on thirteen ten w ib

(10:50):
IBA on your Saturday afternoon. NoBadgers football this week. The Badgers have
a bye week after playing on aFriday night against Purdue, getting the win,
big win for Wisconsin as they openup Big Ten play. They looked
good. They looked a whole lotbetter. They looked a lot better than
(11:13):
the Packers did on Thursday. That'sthat's for sure, and good. It's
good to see that coming together forWisconsin. We'll see as their schedules continued.
They return home against Rutgers for homecomingnext week. But in the meantime,
there's a whole lot more going onin the world of baseball as this
(11:33):
weekend. Milwaukee Brewers are wrapping uptheir regular season schedule with a final slate
against the Chicago Cubs, who arefighting for their playoff lives. The Cubs
have been collapsing over the past coupleof weeks. They have had seven leads
(11:54):
on the road in the eighth inningor later, and they blew it in
the bottom half of the ending eachtime. All seven times they blew the
lead, it has been a horrendousstretch for Cubs fans. I am seeing
Cubs fans in despair on Twitter andit is glorious. Oh, this is
(12:18):
amazing. It is so fun towatch this downfall. And now with this
final series, the Cubs their lastdesperate hope to get into the playoffs,
and they have to face the rivalMilwaukee Brewers, who are tops in the
(12:39):
division. And if the Cubs makethe playoffs, who would their opponent be
the Milwaukee Brewers, And who tothe Brewers not want to face six games
in a row, the Chicago Cubs. So the Brewers are going to be
coming in looking to eliminate the ChicagoCubs from playoff contention. It could be
the Marlins. The Reds still havean outside shots. There's other possibilities here
(13:03):
with the wild card, but theCubs of the Marlins are in that front
runners spot, and the Brewers havethe chance to knock out the Chicago Cubs
from playoff contention. That is thebig thing to play for in this series.
The Birds don't really have anything toplay for in terms of seating.
Okay, they have locked up thedivision, they do not have a buy.
(13:26):
Atlanta and Los Angeles have the firsttwo buys. They go right into
the NLDS. The Brewers will haveto play in the best of three wildcard
round, which will start on Tuesday. All three games are at American Family
Field. All all three games willbe hopefully it's only two games, but
we'll see. We'll cross that bridgewhen we get to it. The Brewers
(13:46):
are gonna be coming into the seriesand even though they've got nothing to play
for, technically they have a wholelot to play for with this series.
They're not gonna be taking it off. They're not just gonna be taking their
foot off the gas and letting theCubs win because the Brewers don't care.
Because the Brewers know the situation thatthe Cubs earning. The Brewers know what
(14:11):
their playoff situation is going to beand who they might face, and I
don't think they want to face theCubs. I think they'd rather take their
chances facing the Marlins or the Reds. That's there that I think that's what
they'd rather do. They do notwant to face the Cubs, even just
not willing to face the Cubs, even just whatever with matchups, whatever it
(14:35):
is having the Cubs be the finalseries of the regular season and then having
to turn around and face them againstarting on Tuesday in a best of three.
The Brewers are not going to wantto do that. No one's gonna
want to do that. You don'twant to be in that situation, which
(14:56):
is why the Brewers are taking alittle bit of a different approach. It
may seem like that the Brewers arejust kind of backing down and not caring
about the series, but that's notthe case. So to start this series,
what the Brewers had lined up wasBrandon Woodruff starting on Friday and Freddie
Peralta starting on Saturday. Two ofyour top starters. And if it gets
(15:22):
to a playoff series, when youget to the wildcard round and those two
guys are gonna be making starts.Burns is probably gonna be lined up for
game one, Woodruff game two,Peralta game three. And the last thing
that the Brewers are going to wantis to have Woodruff and Peralta face the
(15:43):
Cubs and then their next time outhaving to face the Cubs again. You
don't want to give them any extralooks then they already have, especially not
this close turner. You're gonna haveto face them in the playoffs potentially,
Potentially, it's not confirmed that they'regoing to be facing the Cubs just yet.
(16:06):
So in that case, the Brewersare making the smart play here by
having Colin ray Arn on Friday. They're pulling Wildruff, They're pulling Peralta.
They're not letting them start against theCubs. Because even if the Brewers are
coming in trying their hardest, there'sstill a chance that the Cubs could end
(16:26):
up winning a wild card spot. It's still very much possible. So rather
than giving the Cubs extra looks attwo of their top starters that they're going
to be seeing in that playoff series, have them face somebody else and have
Woodroff and Peralta ready to go forthat series. Have them fully rested and
(16:49):
healthy and ready. That is asmart play here by manager Craig Counsel,
and it's why Craig Counsel is arguablythe best manager in all the baseball and
he still may not even win theManager of the Year award, which is
insane to me. I saw thisarticle in The Athletic where all their writers
(17:15):
are doing their voting for all theseawards and n element and Manager of the
Year, Craig Counsel was tied forfirst place with Tory Lavello of the Diamondbacks.
So go the Diamondbacks are stored. They came out of nowhere and they
might get a wildcard spot, solet's give it to Tory Lavello. Really,
(17:36):
are we really going to do thisagain where some team just comes out
of nowhere and because they got ahot shot rookie and Corbyn Carroll and all
of sudden are going to give theirmanager and Manager of the year. Everyone
has known for years that Craig Counselis the best manager in baseball, and
yet he has never won a Managerof the Year award. He's done incredible
(17:57):
managing jobs with all of his teamstaking taking them much further than anyone else
anticipated. And just because some otherteam did that that very same year,
now all of a sudden, no, that guy gets gets a Manager of
the Year award. It happened. It happened to Counsel in twenty eighteen,
and it happened Tohma in twenty nineteen, to happened Toma twenty twenty one.
(18:18):
It happened to him all the time. And I'm sick of it. I'm
sick of Counsel not getting the recognitionthat that he's going to deserve because some
other team is a bigger surprise. But but that that's the problem, that's
the problem that we face. Managerof the Year isn't necessarily about who's the
(18:41):
best manager. It's about whose teamis the biggest surprise. That's essentially all
it is. That that that's kindof the only ward that they can give
because it's not a one individual playerbeing an MVP or whatever. I mean.
Corporate Carroll's gonna get Rookie of theYear out there in Arizona, and
that's a large part of their turnaround. But when a team just outperforms expectations,
(19:07):
the first thing that they do isjust like, oh, well,
it's all on the manager then,so let's give that guy Manager of the
Year. Craig Counsel had several rookiesinserted into a starting lineup. Okay,
he had Bryce Terraang put in inplace of veteran Coulton Wong, a very
(19:29):
good veteran Coulton Wong. He getsa rookie, Bryce Terraang, He gets
Joey Weemer. On the second dayof the season, he had Garrett Mitchell,
another rookie. Garrett Mitchell goes downin the middle of April and he's
left without Mitchell. South Freelick getshurt on that same night, so he's
left without his other top prospect,So I have to call on more rookies,
(19:52):
more young guys. He has tocall on rymel Tapia. At some
point, Andrew Monasterio comes out ofnowhere when Willie Damas is out and Monasterio
is just turning into an everyday playeralmost he's relying on a rookie, and
Monasterio a rookie. In Terrang arookie, and now Garrett Mitchell a rookie,
(20:18):
and Joey Wiemer a rookie. AndSouth Freelick. Lots of rookies out
in that Bullpend, lots of youngarms, lots of unproven arms. So
many young guys throughout the year makingtheir MLB debuts and Counsels able to take
them, and he's able to getthem developed in the major leagues and is
(20:44):
taking them through and getting them acclimatedto the big leagues and being successful and
winning games while doing it, winninggames without having a functioning offense for most
of the season. It is anincredible managerial job by Craig Council, as
(21:06):
it has been every year, andCouncil still doesn't get the recognition that he
deserves. It's time. It's timemedia, it's time voters to give Craig
Council the award that he rightfully deserves. I don't want to hear any about
Tory Lavello or anybody else any othersurprise team. No one picked this Brewers
(21:27):
team to win it all. Noone picked this Breweris team to win the
division. Everyone's all the Cardinals, the Cardinals, They'll be back the Cardinals.
The Cardinals finished dead last in theannals Central That's right, the Cardinals
dead last. And that's who youall picked to win the division. Craig
(21:52):
Council is not gonna get any ofthe credit for building up an eight game
lead in that division and winning ithandily. Do iz Oh, well,
you know, he always kind ofbeats our expectations, so why do we
need to vote for him. That'salso some for somebody else who hasn't beat
our expectations before. Come on,I am sick of this. I am
(22:15):
sick of Craig Counsel not having aManager of the Year award. It is
far past time. This is justlike when Lorenzo Caine for all those years
did not have a Gold Glove award. When he was in Kansas City wherever
he was, he didn't have itfor the longest time, and everyone knew
he was the best defender out there, but there was always somebody who just
(22:37):
had a fantastic year. I waslike, well, we gotta go with
that guy, and Lorenzo Cane getskipped again, and skipped again, and
skipped again. Yet he was consistentlythe best defender there was, and it
took him took him until way toolong to finally get Lorenzo Caine that gold
Glove. And the same thing isnow happening with Craig Counsel. It is
(22:59):
taking him way too long to getthat first Manager of the Year award,
like I was even talking about lastweek, and like it's still being talked
about now. We don't know ifCouncil's gonna be coming back to manage.
It's possible he might, he mightnot. If this is the last year,
(23:19):
it would be a shame for himto step away from managing without having
getting a Manager of the Year award. It's ridiculous. It is time Council
gets a recognition that he deserves. As this Brewers team wins the NL Central
and it's moving on to the playoffsas this regular season comes to an end,
(23:41):
So as the playoffs get started andwe marched towards the World Series and
the Brewers looking to win their firstWorld Series in franchise history, why is
this the team that can win itall? I'll get into that next Here
on Sports on Deck with Dave gasperhere on thirteen ten w Iba. Welcome
(24:19):
back Sports on Deck with Dave gasperHere on thirteen ten Wiba Making My Dreams
Come True? Hell notes the victorysong for the Milaukee Brewers. By the
way, in case you didn't know. Hopefully you did. Hopefully You've been
going to Brewer games lately because theyhave been so much fun. And now
(24:44):
with the postseason approaching, the WaukeeBrewers n L Central champions, they will
play the Wildcard round. Then ifthey win that that that is the best
of three. It's kind of anew wildcard, new playoff format this year.
Best of three in the wildcard round, then you go to the NLDS
where they would likely await the LosAngeles Dodgers and the best of five,
(25:07):
and then if you win that bestof seven NLCS against whoever came out from
the opposite side of the bracket. The Atlanta Braves are the number one seed
that'll be coming out over there facingwhoever it is that comes out of the
Wildcard round. And if you winthat best of seven, you're onto the
World Series facing whoever comes out ofthe American League. So that is a
(25:30):
playoff format. Can the Brewers makeit there? Can the Brewers make it
through this gauntlet of a national league? You got the wildcard round, best
of three, all of them athome. Then you're going on You're facing
the Dodgers. That's not going tobe easy. The Brewers got swept by
the Dodgers out in Los Angeles lasttime they saw them, But the Brewers
(25:52):
were a different team after that.We saw that. They went down to
Texas, they swept the Rangers, put them in a kind of a tailspin.
They went on a nine game winningstreak. Right after that series.
The offense kicked it into gear andfor the past month and a half,
(26:12):
the Brewers have been playing some excellentbaseball. So why can the Brewers get
there? Why should we believe thatthis is the time. We've seen it
before. We saw it in eightyone and eighty two. We saw it
in two thousand and eight. Whenthey made it with twenty eleven, we
(26:33):
thought they could win it all.Twenty eighteen they almost got to the World
Series. They almost got there.Twenty nineteen fell short in the wild card
game, twenty twenty didn't come close. Twenty twenty one, first round exit.
Why is this the year? Thereare several reasons why I believe this
(26:56):
can be the year for the Brewers. Number one, and this is the
same reason why it could not bethis year as well. But number one,
anything can happen in October. That'sthe top reason why why why this
can happen without even looking at theroster or just anything on the field.
(27:17):
Anything can happen in October. Theseare short series. You never know what
kind of crazy stuff can happen inthem. The best of three, a
best of five, even a bestof seven. Anything can happen. Okay,
we've we've seen this before. WhereI mean, the Brewers were a
(27:42):
runaway team in twenty twenty one, runaway in the Anno Central. They were
the higher seat over Atlanta in theLDS, but Atlanta was the hot team.
They got something going and the Brewersjust kind of fell flat and then
lost. In four twenty eighteen, they were they were just one or two
(28:06):
plays going their way from being inthe World Series. One or two plays,
it's all it takes. Anything canhappen in October. The Phillies got
a couple of breaks, got hotat the right time, and boom,
off to the World Series they went. It's not always the best team that
(28:30):
wins in October because anything can happen. And this is kind of the crux
of the bites at the Apple strategythat the Brews have employed. I know
a lot of you don't alike oragree with the bites at the Apple strategy,
but it is pretty sound reasoning justgetting into the playoffs, because you
know, anything can happen. You'renot going to be able to outspend the
(28:52):
Dodgers or the Braids. You maynot be able to put a better team
on paper together than those teams becauseyou don't have enough money to put that
together. But you know that thisgame isn't played on paper. You know
that when it gets to October, all of that goes out the window.
(29:15):
Anything can happen, anything can happenbad, anything can happen good. One
of these years it's going to bethe Brewers where things go their way and
they're able to get it done, and they're the ones who are the longest
overdue for this. Anything can happen. That's the reason number one why they
(29:37):
come win the World Series. Numbertwo. Now we're going to get into
the actual, actual on the fieldissue number two. This offense is finally
hot. They finally put it togetheroffensively, and it started with the acquisitions
of Mark Hanna and Carlos Santana atthe trade deadline. We've seen throughout most
of the summer this off events beingnot enough, just not good enough to
(30:04):
get the job done, and evenwith the excellent pitching staff, they weren't
doing enough to support them. Butnow we've seen them do that. We've
seen them put together twelve at leasttwelve four plus run innings in the month
of September, after putting together eightin August. They had four in the
(30:25):
month of July. So as weget towards the end of the season,
this offense is clicking. This offenseis in high gear. Christian Yellich getting
himself back healthy. William Contreras hasbeen excellent all season long. Mark Canna
has been a wonderful edition. CarlosSantana provides big hits, Rowdy Tiles maybe
(30:47):
starting to get it going. WilliamDamas has been starting to look better of
late. South Freelick has been good. Garrett Mitchell is back now, Monasterio
hittingwell, Josh Donaldson doing what hewas brought in to do. This team
is looking a whole lot better. This offense is looking a whole lot better.
(31:10):
They've been able to put up runswhere they haven't before, and that
was really the big struggle the pastcouple of years. It was a struggle.
Last year it was a struggle intwenty twenty one. That's why they
had the first round exit. Itwas a struggle in twenty twenty, but
that was a weird year. Anyways, the past couple of years, the
offense just hasn't been good, hasn'tbeen good enough. This year, that
(31:36):
offense looks like it's in prime spotsto be able to help out. Reason
number three why the Birds came winin the World Series this year, and
this is this is basically kind ofthree and one for one reason here,
and that's Corbyn Burn's brain of woodrofrom Freddy perraulta. It is that starting
rotation. It is phenomenal. Theyhave been phenomenal all season long, just
(31:59):
the numbers that they have been puttingup and how fearsome they are. When
it gets to October, when youhave a short series and you shorten up
the rotation, you have three acesessentially that the Bruers are gonna be throwing
out there every single time. Forthis wild card round, the best of
three, you got Burns, Woodruffand Peralta that are gonna be pitching.
(32:21):
If it takes a third game andit takes Peralta throwing, then that's what
you're gonna have. Freddy Peralta isa lot better third starter than you're gonna
find pretty much anywhere else. Sothat puts the Bruers in a fantastic spot
where even when it gets to abest of seven series, you're looking at
(32:42):
those three guys probably making six ofthe seven starts. That's probably what you're
looking at. I'd feel very comfortablewith Burns woodrofm Peralta making six of the
seven starts in a seven game series, So that puts them into fantastic spots.
Just matching up against anybody, you'regonna have aces on the mountain,
(33:05):
which is going to keep the otherteam's offense down, which, as long
as your offense continues to be hot, is giving you just enough or you're
gonna be able to win. Andthose starters are gonna be able to hand
it over to reason number four whythis why this team can win the World
Series, and that is the bullpenand how incredibly locked down that they have
(33:30):
been all season long. Devin Williamsand the closer's role and the setup spots.
You got yoel Piomps, who's youknow, maybe running out of gas
a little bit, but you gotElvis Paguero as well. Abner, Your
Rebay has been excellent since coming up. He has been unhittable. Trevor McGill
unhittable over the past couple of weeks. The Brewers have pure gas out there,
(33:52):
your Rebay mcgiller throwing one hundred andone mile to an hour. That's
tough for anybody to come in andtry to hit. I don't care who
you are. I don't care howgood your team is. One hundred and
one miles an hour with sink anarms, side run. You're not touching
that. You're not touching that.I don't I don't care who you are.
(34:15):
So when you have that lockdown ofa bullpen, it's a race to
the sixth inning, it's a raceto the seventh inning essentially. As long
as the Brewers have to lead bythen, they're going to feel very comfortable
handing it over to their bullpen. And Craig Council manages them so well that
seems gonna be in a fantastic spothanding it over to those guys. And
(34:37):
there's almost no one in that bullpenthat I wouldn't trust in a big spot.
The only guy I wouldn't trust ina big spot right now is Andrew
Chaffin, but I don't think he'sgonna make the postseason roster. He really
shouldn't make the postseason roster. Soyou've got all three facets. You got
the bullpen, you got the rotation, you got the offense. That are
(34:58):
fantastic reason number five why this teamcan win it all. And this is
perhaps the most important reason for them. They are hot at the right time.
That's what this is all about. That's what the playoffs is really kind
of all about. That it's notabout the best team that wins at all.
(35:19):
I was saying this before. It'sit's not always the best team.
It's the hottest team who gets hotat the right time. Last year,
the Phillies got hot at the end. They made it all the way to
the World Series. They lost tothe Astros, but they made it to
the World Series. Twenty twenty one, the Brays were nowhere near the best
team in baseball. They were barelybuyers at the trade del end, but
they decided to go all in bythey bought some kind of mediocre guys,
(35:43):
but they got hot as soon asthey got into Atlanta, and all of
a sudden, they're playing extremely wellheading into October and bam, they win
the World Series twenty nineteen. TheWashington Nationals, I mean, they were
almost completely out of it in May. All of a sudden, they just
kicked it in the high gear. They got hot at the end. They
(36:06):
got a lucky break or two againstthe Bruis in that wild Card game,
but they got hot at the righttime and they carried that to a World
Series victory. That is what Octoberbaseball's about. That is another part of
the crux of the Bites at theApple strategy. Getting hot at the right
time. That's what it's all about. That's why I don't overreact to losses
(36:29):
in May or June, because it'sall about being hot in September heading into
October. And the Brewers have beenhot for the past month. Ever since
that Dodgers series where they got swept, they have kicked it into high gear
for a month and a half. They have been playing excellent baseball. They
have been hot, hot hitters, hot pitchers, hot defense, all of
(36:52):
it. And they still had thejuice going here into October. And that
is why the Brewers can win theWorld Series in twenty twenty three. This
is possible. This is real. This is something that they can put together.
(37:15):
This is our year, this isour time. We have the team,
We have it in all facets. We are hot at the right time.
This is the year that the MonketBrewers can win it all. Coming
up, four four four sports leaguesin four minutes. You're listening to Sports
(37:37):
on Deck with Dave Gasper here onthirteen ten w IBA Sports on Decer.
(38:00):
Dave Gasper continues with you here forjust a couple more minutes on your Saturday
afternoon. I am Dave Gasper. It is that time in the show to
go around all four major sports leaguesin it just four minutes. It is
time once again for four for four, four for four, four sports leagues,
(38:22):
four minutes, let's go. Inthe NFL last weekend, Taylor Swift
was spotted at the Kansas City Chiefsgame supporting her boyfriend Travis Kelsey. Kelsey
Jersey sales jumped four hundred percent immediatelyafter that. Taylor Swift is expected to
be at the game against the Jetson Sunday. This is the biggest love
(38:43):
story in sports right now. It'sa bad pun, I know, but
you know what they say, speaknow or forever, hold your peace moving
on. Joe Namath said this weekthat he has seen enough of Zach Wilson
and he ain't it. The turmoilin New York continues, and with Kelsey
Swift and the Chiefs coming into townon Sunday, not gonna be easy for
(39:05):
them to turn the corner. Packersleft tackle David back Tiari is going on
injured reserve and he may even bedone for the season as his knee continues
to give him trouble. In theNBA, it's Dame time in Milwaukee.
The Milwaukee Bucks completed a trade withthe Trailblazers and the Suns to get Damian
Lillard to the Milwaukee Bucks. DrewHolliday and Grayson Allen are going to Portland.
(39:30):
A couple of picks are involved aswell. The Milwaukee Bucks are now
title favorites with Janis and Dame, and they're already selling his jersey in the
team store. In the NHL,Calgary Flames assistant GM Chris Snow unfortunately suffered
a catastrophic brain injury and passed awaythis week. He was able to complete
(39:52):
organ donation condolences to the Snow familyin this difficult time, Also in Calgary,
name center McHale Backland has signed atwo year extension and was named captain
for this upcoming season. In MajorLeague Baseball, Bryce Harper was ejected from
the Phillies game the other night becauseof a horrible check swing out call by
(40:15):
none other than Angel Hernandez. It'salways Angel Hernandez causing problems, and yet
he wonders why he doesn't get promoted. It's astounding. The Miami Marlins are
upset. They had a game getpostponed in New York this week due to
poor field management during rain. Thenin the final game of the series,
(40:37):
the Marlins pull ahead two to onein the top of the ninth and then
all of a sudden, a raindelay in the ninth inning for three hours
before they finally decide to suspend thegame. So now the Marlins have to
leave town and potentially come back onMonday to finish out one ending of one
game because otherwise they're a game shortand a playoff race with the Cubs.
(41:00):
Every game counts. At this point, they have a half game lead over
the Cubs, which could be afull game, or it could be no
games at all because we haven't finishedthis game. The Marlins have every right
to be upset, and how andhow that whole thing transpired, I don't
blame him. And that is fourfour sports leagues in just four minutes,
(41:24):
So I am really kind of arunning against the clock here. But just
one quick thing on the Damian Lillardtrade. It was a shock out of
pretty much nowhere to see this getaccomplished. I know that the trade,
the Damian Lillard trade talks have beenkind of ongoing across the league, and
yeah, maybe the Bucks are aroundthere, but all of a sudden,
(41:45):
it just happens. Just fantastic moveby John Horst. Janis has been saying
that, look, you know,I want to stay in Milwaukee, but
I need to go where there's thebest chance for me to contend for a
championship. I always got Damian Lillard, and he's not going to find a
better situation. In order to competefor a championship, it costs Drew Holiday.
(42:07):
I liked Drew Holliday, as didpretty much everyone who came across him.
It's unfortunate to see him leave. But in order to get Damian Lillard
in, I think this is afantastic move for the Bucks. And one
that they had to make and justgreat all around job by John Horst and
the Milwaukee Bucks. That'll do itfor me. I am out of time.
(42:27):
