You were listening to Sports on Deckwith Dave Gasper. Welcome to Sports on
Deck with Dave Gasper here on thirteento ten WIBA. I am, of
course Dave Gasper. You can followme on Twitter at de Gasper twenty four.
I got lots of stuff going upon there all the time. You
can also follow me at Reviewing theBrew Reviewing Thebrew dot com. It's where
(00:32):
all my articles go up and everythingcovering the Brewers over there. It's a
busy time of year for me,it's a busy time for you of year
covering the Brewers. With everything wegot going on, you got the trade
deadline coming up in a little overa month here, you have the Mob
Draft coming up in just a coupleof weeks now, the All Star Game
coming up in just a couple ofweeks, and the Brewers and the latest
(00:55):
All Star voting update. They gota couple of guys up there. We'll
get into that and they all startvoting numbers coming up a little later on
in the show here, But first, the Burrs currently out on their road
trip out west, starting off inLos Angeles against the Angels and then going
down to San Diego to face thePadres Birds get a series win in Los
(01:18):
Angeles, thanks in large part toSal Freelick, who made a phenomenal made
a couple of phenomenal catches at thewall to rob Taylor Ward of some hits,
including a home run robbery to endthe game, and really just some
fantastic defense out there from Sal Freelick. And it really makes you wonder what
(01:41):
is going to happen in this outfieldwhen Garrett Mitchell returns, because keep in
mind, this was the series thatGarrett Mitchell was aiming to be back by.
He was trying to say, oh, well, you know, I'm
gonna try to be back by theseventeenth there for the Angels series, and
Pat Murphy told us last weekend thathe's not going to be ready in time
for that. He's going to needa few more at bats down there in
(02:04):
Triple A to kind of get hisfeet underneath them and get ready to go
after missing two and a half monthsof game action with that finger injury.
But since he's gotten that extra timedown there, we have seen Garrett Mitchell
have a multi home run game, have an inside the park home run,
and his overall just continuing to lookbetter and better. So Garrett Mitchell is
(02:27):
closing in on a return here veryvery soon. He's ready, He's just
about ready over there. So whenyou call him back, how do you
make this outfield mix work? Howdo you make the roster work? Because
the Brewers, with all their injuriesthat they got, and we'll get more
(02:50):
into the injuries also coming up here, you got guys on the sixty day
il Mitchell is one of them. When he comes back, he needs a
forty man roster spot. I wasowing for only so many forty man roster
spots to go around, and onlyso many guys at risk of losing them.
But he also got only so manyguys that you can option down on
the twenty six man roster. Twoand the outfield mix currently has Christian Yellich
(03:15):
who's not going anywhere, Jackson Curio, who's putting up the best month of
his career so far. He gotBlake Perkins, who's a key part of
this team, and he got salFrielik who just keeps on Robin Homer's and
playing well. So you already gotfour outfielders and only three spots to play
him every single day. Now,Pat Murphy kind of rotates them through pretty
evenly, which is good to see. But now when Mitchell comes back,
(03:37):
that's going to kind of throw anotherwrench into it. A four man weave
is a lot easier to do thana five man weave out there in the
outfield. So how is that goingto play out? Honestly at this point,
I don't know, And even ifI asked Pat Murphy he wouldn't even
have a concrete answer as to exactlyhow that's going to play out. Part
(04:00):
of it's going to be based onperformance, as it always is. Guys
who are hitting the ball well aregoing to get in there a bit more
often than guys who aren't. Butyou got a couple of lefties in there
now with Mitchell and Sal You gotPerkins a switch hitter. You got Cheerio
a righty. Yeah, Yelich alefty as well. But Yelich is gonna
play every single day no matter what. So how do you make that roster
(04:25):
group fix? Can you send downSal? I don't think he can send
down Freelick at this point. ForMitchell, I don't think he can send
down Blake Perkins either. With whatMurphy and the Brewers have said about Perkins
and how important he is to theteam and how well he's played this year.
I don't think you can send himdown. Churio, they've told us
isn't going anywhere. He's not goingdown, especially not that he's starting to
(04:47):
hit better. Now that he's startingto hit better, they're not gonna send
Chario down. And Yelich, Imean he's Yellich is Yelich. So you're
gonna end up with five outfielders. Now, this is where, if you
remember back to spring training, thisis where sal Freelick was supposed to be
playing a bunch of third base, right, Because when you had Mitchell and
(05:09):
Perkins and Churio and Yelich, yougot so many outfielders and only so many
spots to put him in. Sothey experimented with moving south Freelick to third
base to try and get him someregular playing time and solve one of the
major holes on their roster. Becausethey didn't know what they had at that
point. That the Birds didn't knowwhat they had, they brought in a
(05:29):
whole bunch of guys to try andfix that problem. They went with young
guys there. They didn't bring ina veteran like rees Hoskins, to address
first base. They brought in abunch of young guys, and we're trying
to see who rose to the top. When you had Owen Miller and Oliver
Dunn that you brought in, andyou had Sal Freelick joining the mix.
You had Joey Ortiz in there, you had Tyler Black, a prospect in
(05:54):
there. You had Andrew Mountasterio, you had a whole bunch of You had
a whole bunch of bodies, butyou had no clue who was going to
end up being your starting third baseman. And that's where it maybe made some
sense for Sal. Sal's a highlytouted prospect, highly touted hitter, where
if you can put him over atthird base, it solves that problem,
(06:14):
it solves your outfield problem, andyou get your best bets in the lineup.
But now now that a couple ofmonths have gone by, Joey Ortiz
has clearly claimed the starting third basejob. It's his. He's he's hitting
like two eighty two ninety. Heis playing elite defense over at third base.
He is an everyday player. BryceWilson called him a generational player the
(06:42):
other day. A generational player. Now I think it might be a bit
premature to say joe Ortiz is agenerational player, But then again, Bryce
Wilson is a part of this team. He knows a lot more about baseball
than pretty much anybody else, okay, outside outside of that clubhouse. He
(07:03):
sees Ortiz every single day. Hesees great players, he sees generational players,
and he thinks Joey Ortiz is amongthat group. That says something says
a lot about how the Brewers viewJoey Ortiz, not just the front office,
(07:24):
but the players themselves. So JoeyOrtiz is not going anywhere, Okay,
the way that he's hitting, theway that he's playing defense. You're
not taking him out of the lineupto put Sal Freelick over at third base,
And you're not moving Orties over overto shortstop because Adamas is not coming
out of the line if you're notmoving him over to second base, because
Tang has no reason to come outof the lineup. So you need to
(07:46):
find a way to make that groupwork because there's no extra place to put
Sal now, the places he wastraining at second base and third base,
those are taken up by two ofthe best hitters on this team, arguably
Bryce Terrag and Joey Ortiz are notlosing any playing time at all. Sal
(08:09):
Frielich might be losing some playing timethough, might have to once Garrett Mitchell
comes back. They're gonna need aforty man spot form and they're gonna need
twenty six man spot form. Sowhere do you find it? If you
can't send down one of the outfielders, who do you send out? Where
(08:33):
Where is the meat to be trimmedhere on the roster? And I think
that when I look at this roster, there is one spot where I feel
like they could make this move, and that is Jake Bowers getting designated for
assignment. That is the only spotthat I can see. Now. There
may be some others that the Brewerstend to get, you know, creative
(08:56):
sometimes with the roster moves that theymake. But we also saw the other
day the Brewers sent down Oliver Doneand they called up Tyler Black. Tyler
Black he can back up third baseand first base. He can play first
base. The big thing with Bowersbeing on this team right now is that
he is a backup first baseman behindRhyes Hoskins, who's coming off an ACL
(09:20):
tear last year. And you know, he's kind of average is defensively,
so you kind of need that backupfirst baseman to get Hoskins off his feet
from time to time so that hecan DH. So you need a backup
first baseman. Andrew Monasterio can playover there, yes, but Andrew Monasterio
is not going to be your primarybackup first baseman. Owen Miller is not
(09:41):
good enough to be your primary backupfirst baseman. I know, primary backup,
it just it doesn't it's kind ofa conundrum, but you know what
I mean, your your number twofirst baseman, Monasterio Miller. They're not
going to cut it Bowers. It'sbeen struggling a bit lately. Yes,
he had the home run there againstthe Angels, but overall he's been struggling.
(10:05):
He is out of minor league options, so to get him off the
roster you have to dfah, whichwould clear forty man roster spot for Mitchell,
which is going to be needed whenMitchell comes back. So I think
that's the way that they can getthis done because you have Tyler Black up.
Tyler Black can be your primary backupfirst baseman. He can back you
(10:28):
up there in the infield as well. And that gets Mitchell back onto the
roster. It gets a spark plugoutfielder. It gets a guy with speed,
some power, hitting ability, addsthat to the group. So I
think that's where you can find apath for Garrett Mitchell because Bruce could certainly
(10:54):
use him. He's playing really wellin TRIPLEA. He looks healthy. You're
gonna call him back up, okay, because this guy has star power.
Think about Think about this. Thisis how crazy talented this Burger's outfield is.
We've seen Sal Frelick and Blake Perkinsin center field all year and they
(11:15):
have been phenomenal. They've been greatdefenders. They've been playing Gold Glove caliber
defense out there in center field. And Garrett Mitchell is a better defender than
both of them. He is.Garrett Mitchell is a better defender than both
Sal Frelick and Blake Perkins. Youhaven't even seen your best center fielder out
(11:37):
there yet. You have gotten greatplay out in center field. Pat Murphy's
been raving about the play in centerfield from Sal and Blake, and Garrett
Mitchell is better. Believe it ornot, Garrett Mitchell went healthy is better.
Obviously, we haven't seen him healthyvery much over the last two years,
(11:58):
which has been awful for both Mitchelland the Brewers because we've seen when
he's out there what he can do. So now that he's healthy, you
get him back out there and youget him playing probably just about every single
day, you're going to see thespark that he has and it's going to
be I think, even better thanwhat Sal and Blake are bringing to center
(12:20):
field, which is very hard todo because they have been amazing. There
have been no complaints none whatsoever aboutSouth feel like and Blake Perkins defensively out
there in centerfield, absolutely nothing youcan complain about. Mitchell is still just
better. He's just better. Sohe's gonna come back at some point.
(12:46):
He's going to play and they're gonnahave these other guys who've been playing well,
but they're gonna end up having toplay a little bit less just because
there's there's only so much room.I mean, it's a good problem to
have. This is a problem theywere expecting to have back in April,
back when the season began. Then, of course, Mitchell's finger injury caused
(13:09):
an issue with that and it kindof put those plans on hold. Maybe
if if Mitchell hadn't gotten hurt,we could have seen Sal take over as
your starting third basement, and wenever never would have known what Joey Ortiz
would do as a starting third baseman. It all has a wage of shaking
itself out. It always does.Right now, it's going to look like
(13:33):
a jam once Mitchell comes back. The clearest path I see to getting him
on the roster is Bowers getting deafayed, because Bowers is kind of a backup
outfielder only in real cases of emergency. But now that Tyler Black is back
up, that might put the writingon the wall for Bowers. But we'll
(13:58):
see Mitchell's gonna have to come backhere at some point when his rehab assignment
is up in the Brewers field thathe's ready, It's gonna be a crowded
outfield he's coming back to. Butlike I said, I think he's the
best defender of the group. Evenwith how great Sal Freelick and his home
run robberies have been, and BlakePerkins and his throwing arm and home run
(14:20):
robberies have been, Garrett Mitchell isjust simply better. Coming up, we'll
talk about the All Star of voting. Those numbers that have come in where
the Brewers stand a couple guys maybein line to be All Star starters.
We'll get into that coming up.You're listening to Sports on Deck with Dave
(14:41):
Gasper here on thirteen ten WIBA.Welcome back to Sports on Deck with Dave
(15:01):
Gasper here in thirteen ten WIBA.I'm Dave Gasper. Follow me on Twitter
at d Gasper. Twenty four. The All Star Game this year is down
in Texas, Arlington, Texas, home of the Texas Rangers, and the
Milwaukee Brewers are trying to send asmany players to that game as possible.
(15:24):
So earlier this week we got thefirst update on the All Star balloting from
the fan voting for the starters, and the Brewers find themselves in a couple
of pretty good spots, so justkind of running down the list here from
the update, William Contreras, tono surprise, is leading the NL Catchers
(15:48):
voting with seven hundred and forty sixfour hundred and sixty one votes, so
he is. He's got a prettynice lead over J. T ro Muto
of the Phillies at five hundred andfifty eight thousand real. Muto now hurt,
so that is also going to hurthis chances of making it. So
the top two at each position moveon to the next round, move on
(16:11):
to phase two of the All Starvoting. So you've got to be in
the top two here in phase onebefore you can be declared the start and
then they'll do another round of votingwhen it's down to just the two guys
so can scare. So he hashimself a pretty nice lead here early on,
and he deserves it. He absolutelydeserves to be the starting catcher for
(16:32):
the National League this year. Andif real Muto stays as the number two
option there and the balloting, Concerirasis gonna end up being your starter because
real Muto again is hurt. ButWill Smith is only behind real Muto by
about seven hundred about seven hundred votes, so Will Smith could catch up there
(16:55):
very very quickly, and that wouldbe a little bit more of a battle
between Contreras and Smith to be theNational League starting catcher. But Contreras is
sitting in the pole position with anice big lead. Moving on down to
first base, Jake Bowers is ninth. He's got sixty eight thousand votes.
He is not even close to makein the All Star Game, as I
(17:17):
was just kind of talking about before, he is closer to getting designated for
assignment, so the All Star Gamea little bit out of the question.
But he's only three thousand votes behindPaul Goldschmidt, which I never in a
million years would have thought that JakeBauers and Paul Goldschmidt would be that close
to each other in All Star voting. Not in any sort of reality,
(17:41):
not in any sort of alternate universe, would I have thought that to be
possible. Moving on down to secondbase is where the Brewers have someone who's
deserving. Bryce Terrang, as we'retalking about, he's taking a quantum leap
this year. He's been the leadoffhitter. He has been phenomenal. He's
stealing He's second in the league andstolen bases. Bryce Terrang has been great.
(18:02):
He's been deserving of an All Starnotd but he's sixth in the first
ballot update here, six behind Gavinlux Ozzie Albi's Bryson Stott, and then
Tell Martee and Luisa Rise are thetwo leading candidates at second Mason the n
L, and they've got quite abig lead over Trang. So Terang's got
a lot of ground to make up. I'm not sure if he can make
(18:23):
it up, but still I wouldhave expected Terang to be at least a
little bit higher on this list givenwhat he's done this year. I think
he's deserving of an All Star. Not he's deserving of a Gold Glove.
That's another argument entirely because the Rollingsgold gloves, they've just been so freakin
(18:44):
bad for several years now that deservingplayers don't actually get them, which is
ridiculous. It's not the best defensiveplayer every single year, it's the best
defensive reputation. It's all about reputation. Rookies don't win, it just doesn't
happen. But Brice Trang is sixwith one hundred and fifty eight thousand votes,
(19:06):
next closest with the Lux at onehundred and eighty three thousand, So
he's got a ways to go ifTerrang is gonna make up some ground.
So I don't think Terrang is gonnaend up being an All Star this year
just based on this. It ismaybe a bit of a crowded picture,
but with Araise Marte Stott and Albie'sit's just gonna be hard for him to
get in there at second base.Moving on over to third base, you
(19:30):
got Alec Bohm running away with withthings with over a million votes of the
Phillies at third base, and thenright and then at second place, Manny
Machatto the Padres with two hundred andsixty seven thousand, So Boom is your
runaway favorite to be your starting thirdbasement in the NL. But right there
in third place, Joey or TezJoey r. Teaz of the Brewer is
(19:52):
two hundred and forty four thousand, nine hundred and fifty seven. He is
just a little bit behind, abouttwenty plus thousand votes behind Manny Machado.
And keep in mind the top twomove on and Joey Ortiz's third. So
Joey Ortiz, I mean you could, seriously, you can make up that
vote total. You can make upthose twenty thousand votes. I don't know
(20:17):
if we're going to get any sortof you know, three AM dumps of
you know, twenty hundred thousand votesfor Joey Ortiz here. But theoretically it
is possible that for Joey Ortiz tosurpass Manny Machado here in the in the
All Star balloting and he can getinto that top two spots. And although
(20:41):
he is not going to be overtakingAlec Boem of the Phillies for the starting
job, I mean, it's gonnamake it a lot easier for him to
be named as a reserve if hewas a finalist in the balloting. That's
just a fact. Moving on downto shortstops, Molkie Betts is running away
with things with over a million votes. But Monkie Betts just got hit on
(21:06):
the hand and has got a brokenbone in his hand and he is going
to be out for the next severalweeks. And Milki Betts is going to
miss the All Star Game. SoMolkie Bets will not be your NL starting
shortstop in the All Star Game. You got trade Turner after him, and
then you got Ellie day La Cruz, and then Orlando Arcia and then Willia
Adamas. Willia Domas is behind OrlandoArcia in All Star voting. If you
(21:30):
had told me that in twenty twentyone that this would end up being the
case, I would not have believedyou. Arcia, the former Brewers shortstop,
never really able to put it alltogether in Milwaukee, ends up getting
traded down to Atlanta, and nowhe's made a really strong career for himself
being the shortstop over there for them, And now he's leading Willia Domas even
(21:52):
in All Star voting Willi Domas onehundred and thirty seven thousand votes, Orlando
RC one hundred and forty seven thousand. So Adamas has some work to do
if he's going to make his firstAll Star Game. Adamas, I mean,
he's an elite shortstop man. Hereally is. Defensively, offensively,
he's having a phenomenal year in hiswalk yere But he's never been named an
All Star before, and it justseems like such a crime that he hasn't
(22:18):
been. But shortstop is such aload of position, and there's only so
many guys that are able to getit. With bets being out, that
may help that there are only threeguys realistically in front of him in Turner,
de la Cruz and Arcia. ButI mean, I think Turner and
dea Cruz are certainly going to makethe team. Is a damis going to
be able to supplant Arcia's Is hegonna be able to make it on the
(22:41):
team as a shortstop? I don'tknow. There's only so many reserve spots
to go around. Some guys maydropouts. A Damas could be named it
as an alternate, but he's gotsome work to do if he's going to
be moving up in these ballots.Moving on down to the DH spot,
REYE. Hoskins is fourth, adistant fourth behind Kyle Schwarber, Marcelo Zuna,
(23:06):
and the runaway favorite Shohei Otani withover a million votes. Otani is
going to be the DH for theNational League. That is not going to
be a surprise. But Hoskins,he missed a couple of weeks that didn't
help his case, and since he'scome back, he's been kind of slow
going offensively. He did have abig hit there in the ninth against Padres
the other day, but Hoskins,it just doesn't seem to be in the
(23:30):
cards to be an All Star thisyear for him. And then moving on
down to the outfield, it's avery weak NL outfield this year, just
with injuries and just some poor performances. But Christian Yelich is in second place
and in the outfield, I believeit is a top nine that ended up
moving on to the final phase thereof the fan voting and Yelich is he's
(23:55):
currently in line for a starting job. It's Jerkson Profar leading the way,
he's having a great ear then Yelich, then Fernando Tatist Junior, then after
that got you know, Taskar,Hernandez, Brandon Marsh kind of move on
down the line there. And thereare no other Brewers in the top twenty
in the voting, So Jackson Curiois not in the top twenty. South
(24:17):
Freelich not in the top twenty. So Christian Yelich is your hope for an
All Star outfielder. He's got thename recognition, he's having a great season.
He did miss a couple of weeksthere with the back, but since
he's come back, he's still beenplaying phenomenally well. So Yelich in position
to be an All Star starter,William Contreras in position to be an All
Star starter. Joey Ortiz could makethe team as a reserve. He's he's
(24:42):
got a very real, realistic shotat that. And that's just on on
the hitting side of things. Thepitching side. Now, fans don't get
to vote for pitchers for the AllStar Game, which is you know,
a little uh, you know,I would have liked to able to open
some pitchers, but still the Brewerscould have some candidates there. I'm not
(25:06):
sure if you know. Freddy Peralta'srecent struggles may take him out of consideration
to being an All Star pitcher.Brian Hudson is certainly deserving man. He
has been phenomenal. I know,I know it is hard for setup men
and basically middle relievers to make itto the All Star Game. The All
Stars pitching staff is starting pitchers andclosers. That's pretty much. Yet it's
(25:30):
not generally multi ending reliever types.Now. Josh Hater was able to do
that early on in his career, even though he wasn't really a closer,
just because he was that dominant.Brian Hudson, you could argue, is
that level of dominant. Since he'sbeen put into this role, he's been
a multi ending guy. He hasn'treally gotten too many saves, but he's
(25:52):
been in high leverage and he hasjust not given up runs. Brian Hudson
deserving. Trevor McGill has been reallygood. You can make the argument he
should be an All Star pitcher. He's a closer on a first place team.
He absolutely could do it. Sothose guys making some sense. I
(26:14):
don't think anyone else in the Brewers'rotation outside of Freddie has a chance of
being an All Star. You know, Colin Ray, as much as I
love Colin Ray, you know America'shero, Colin Rays, so much as
I love that guy, he's notan All Star. Bryce Wilson, great
guy, not an All Star. It's just they're not getting there. So
(26:37):
your best chances is the hitters heregetting the All Stars. You got Contraras
in line to be a starter,Yellich in line to be a starter,
or Tease can be a reserve.Maybe he can get yourself a pitch or
two. Maybe Hudson or McGill canget themselves to the All Star Game.
I could see it because the pitchers, the pitching staff that gets voted on
(27:00):
by the players and coaches around theleague. You don't think those players and
coaches around the league are looking atBrian Hudson. I'd being like, man,
that dude's amazing. He should bean All Star. You don't think
they've determined that. Now. Also, part of those spots do get determined
by the league. You do havethe player vote and the coaches vote,
(27:22):
But the league also has some sayin determining the rosters there because every team
needs a representative, and sometimes thatmeans, you know, a team like
the Brewers, who may at thatpoint already have three representatives, maybe they
don't need a fourth, but maybesome other really crappy team needs a first,
So we'll put one of their relieverson there and leave off one of
the Brewers guys. Maybe that's justhow we'll make it happen. So that's
(27:47):
always something to contend with because it'sRob Manfred running the league and that's just
how decisions go sometimes. But theBrewers, they find themselves in a pretty
good spot to to get some AllStars this year, to get several All
Stars a couple of starters. Brewershaven't had any All Star starting position players
(28:10):
in a while. Their last AllStar starter in the starting lineup was Christian
Yelich in twenty nineteen. They havehad just one position player All Star since
twenty nineteen. You remember who itwas, It's probably not who you're thinking.
Omar Narvayaz was the last position playerAll Star that the Brewers had in
(28:36):
twenty twenty one. He was therealong with Brandon Woodroff Freddy Peral to Corvin
Burns and Josh Hater. That waswhen I mean that was peak pitching staff
right there in Narvaez. He washaving a pretty good year, but I
think he almost made it just becausehis pitching staff was so great that he
was recognized for that. But thelast couple of years it has been exclusively
pitchers making it to the All StarGame for the they haven't had any hitters
(29:02):
in a while. Yelich was thelast starter to get in there. Yelich,
Mustakis and grand Dahl We're all AllStars in twenty nineteen, So that
was the last time that the Brewershad three All Star position players, and
they could have three again this year. Contraras, Yelich, and Ortiz finding
(29:25):
themselves in pretty good spots to benamed to the All Star Game, which
is coming up in Texas at GlobeLife Field in July. So we'll get
some more All Star voting updates aswell. Those will be coming out soon
and we'll see if the Brewers areindeed able to secure any starters in the
(29:47):
lineup. Coming up, we'll talksome more Brewers as we keep things rolling
here on your Saturday afternoon. You'relistening to Sports on Deck with Dave Gasper
here on thirteen ten WIBA witness onething's telling me me just like a miracle,
(30:11):
you have to see why. TwoSports on day, Dasberg, You're
on thirteen ten. The wiv Atrade deadline is coming up fast, a
little over a month away, andwe've talked about it before here on the
show. The trade deadline targets togo after the Brewers needs they need help
(30:33):
in the starting rotation. Who shouldthey get? All great questions, But
on the flip side of that samecoin, the one thing that we haven't
really talked about that much yet. Two, who are you going to give
up? Right? Because if you'regoing to get one of these top starters
(30:53):
that's out there, you're gonna haveto give up somebody pretty good. Now.
The Brewers have a good farm system, they do, but they've also
shied away in recent years from tradingtheir top prospects. They like to hold
on to them and see what they'reable to do and try and get something
out of them, rather than justtrading them in order to get other established
(31:17):
guys. They will trade the lowerlevel guys, the guys that they don't
have as much invested in the guysthat they don't believe in as much,
they will trade them away and theywill keep their top prospects. They had
opportunities, They had plenty of opportunitiesin order to get big time guys to
trade away Jackson Curio and Garrett Mitchelland Sal Freelich and Joey Weimer and Bryce
(31:42):
Terrang. They had opportunities to tradeall of those guys. They were prospects,
they were valuable. You could havetraded them for something really good at
one of these deadlines in recent years, but the Brewers opted not to.
They opted to keep them. Sothat leads me to think that the Brewers
may do the same kind of thingagain. They're going to keep their top
(32:05):
prospects, trade guys maybe a bitfurther down that that they aren't going to
miss as much, and try toimprove the team that way. See,
as much as they have all theseprospects and they believe in all of them
and believe all of them can achievetheir potential, and they're going to do
everything that they can to help thembecome valuable big leaguers, they also can
(32:28):
recognize when some of these guys justaren't going to be it like Justin Jarvis.
Okay, he was kind of popup prospect, you know, finally
put things together and I was havinga really good season as prospect status was
rising, and so they flipped themwhile they could in order to get Mark
Canna. It's a good move,Justin Jarvis. I don't think it was
(32:52):
going to be an answer in thisBrewer's rotation. I don't think his stuff
was going to translate, but hisstock was rising and other teams could be
sold on He's put it together. So what do the Brewers have to trade
this year? Now? When youlook at their top prospects list? Okay,
(33:12):
as I've got it pulled up here, who can you look at as
a possible trade candidate from this group? Just looking at the top ten,
starting at the top here, JacobMasarowski. Is this the time to trade
Jacob Masarowski? The miss is thistime to trade him? Now? I
think you're gonna have some people onone side of the coin and say,
(33:34):
absolutely not, do not trade him. As an elite type of arm six
foot seven, throws one hundred milesan hour, elite stuff, strikeout stuff,
your top prospect, one of thetop pitching prospects in all of Baseball.
Absolutely, do not trade him. He's in Double A, he's putting
up some good numbers. But onthe other side of the coin here,
(33:58):
he's got walk issues. He hasgot major walk issues. Now. In
his last start he didn't walk asingle guy in six innings, which was
great. Only the second time inhis career though that he has gone more
than two innings without walking or hittingsomebody. He's got command problems, and
frankly, I'm not convinced Jacob Miserwskiis going to stick as a starting pitcher.
(34:23):
I think if he makes this club, he is going to be a
reliever and a reliever only. Andhe may come up and he may be
a right handed version of Josh Hader. And don't get me wrong, there's
a ton of value in that, but not as much value as a starting
pitcher. As of now, youcould still probably sell Miserrowski as a starter.
(34:45):
You could convince another team that yeah, this dude can start, absolutely
and you can get a starter's valuefor him. If the other team believes
that Miserowski is a reliever only, they are not going to pay top dollar
for him. You are not goingto be getting one of the top starting
pitchers out on the market from Hisroowskiif the other team believes that he is
a reliever only. But as moreand more time goes on, if these
(35:07):
walk issues persist and the Brewers aren'table to fix them, it's going to
become more and more clear that Miserowskiis a reliever only. So as of
now, you could probably sell Miserowskias a starter. If you wait until
this offseason, if you wait untilnext trade deadline, if Miserowski is not
up yet, it's going to becomemore and more clear that he is a
(35:28):
reliever only, and the value forhim is going to tank. So now
Misowski's value is probably the highest it'sgoing to be. So the question from
Matt Arnold, the question for theBrewers is are you willing to wait it
out and potentially have that outcome beMiserowski as a reliever or do you want
(35:52):
to move him in order to getthe starting pitcher that you need now?
Because Miserrowski is not going to bea starter for this team. He's not
gonna be started for them this year. I don't think he's gonna be started
for them next year or any yearafter that. I think he's a reliever.
So Miswrowski I think has to beavailable in trade talks. Then moving
(36:15):
on down the list here, JeffersonCaro injured out for the year. He's
not going anywhere. Tyler Black he'sup in the big league club now,
he's not really gonna be going anywhere. I don't think. Robert Gasser injured
out for the year undergoing Tommy Johnsurgery. He got his third opinion back
and it was confirming the second opinionthat his UCL was two weak. He
(36:36):
had the choice of rehab or surgery. Robert Gasser chose rehab or he chose
surgery, and now he is outfor twelve months. Who's going to miss
the rest of the year, misspart of next year recovering from surgery.
So Gasser, he's out. He'snot getting traded anywhere. Brock Wilkin probably
your top available position player prospect intrade talks. He's not having a great
(37:00):
season hitting two thirty two seven ohtwo ohps down there Ina Bileoxi eight double
six homers, okay, cool,a little bit of a strikeout issue,
but nothing too bad. So BrockWilkin, maybe you could dangle if you
want to get one of these topguys Carlos Rodriguez, he's up, he's
(37:20):
in the rotation now, he's notgoing anywhere. Then you got guys lower
down in the system, Luis Laraand a ball, Cooper Pratt and a
ball, Yo, Ferry Rodriguez anda ball. Those guys are playing exceptionally
well. If I'm the Brewers,I am holding on to all three of
those because they have star potential. They just kind of need to see those
higher levels. They are teenagers.Lara and Pratt are nineteen yo. Ferry
(37:43):
Rodriguez is eighteen playing in low A. So for me, I'm holding on
to all of those guys. I'mnot trading them. Lara, maybe I'd
be the most open to trading.I'd be most open to trading Laura because
it's, you know, there's notreally much of any power there, you
(38:05):
know, he he it's basically thehit tool and some speed and yes,
good defense, but hit tool andsome speed, and he's hitting two fifty
in a ball. Now. Grantedhe's a nineteen year old playing in high
A. It's a pretty advanced placementfor him. But still, maybe I
(38:28):
could see I could see Laura beingtraded just because Brus may not want to
move Wilkin at all, just becauseof how close he is and how loaded
the Brewers already are in the outfield. But I mean Eric Brown Junior,
I mean, he's probably gonna bedropping out of the top ten just with
his poor season down in w bloxishitting a buck seventy six. So Brown's
(38:49):
not gonna be worth as much ashe used to be. So those I
mean just kind of looking at thetop ten there. If you're going to
be getting one of these top guys, I think Misowski has to be considered
as a trade target, as atrade candidate, Wilkin considered, and maybe
Luis Laura everyone else. I thinkyou gotta keep. I think the Brewers
(39:15):
will keep. I should say becauseKaren Gas are out for the year,
They're not going anywhere. Black Rodriguez, They're they're part of the big league
club. They're not going to begoing anywhere. I think Joey Weimer could
get traded now. He's not onthe top prospect list currently, he's already
graduated, but he certainly could couldfind himself on the move. Coming up,
(39:37):
we will wrap things up here justa few more minutes. The left.
