Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hey, Yo, What up?

Speaker 2 (00:00):
I'm Josh Martinez of the Superstar Crossover podcast on iHeartRadio
with my guest WWEE Heavyweight Champion Cody Road. Is going on, man,
how are you?

Speaker 3 (00:10):
Man?

Speaker 2 (00:11):
I'm chilling. You know, last time we spoke, it was
right before WrestleMania in La. A lot has happened over
the last year. What would you say has been the
biggest difference in your personal life?

Speaker 4 (00:23):
Oh?

Speaker 1 (00:24):
Gosh, in my personal life.

Speaker 4 (00:27):
You know, I'm a first time girl dad, and that
presents its own daily milestones and discoveries. And I've learned
a great deal about True and the Rainbow Kingdom on Netflix,
for example, and I've learned to Like yesterday, I put

(00:49):
together a chair, and this was such a simple construction project.

Speaker 1 (00:52):
I took forever with it. I battle tested it.

Speaker 4 (00:54):
But just the feeling of pride to do those kind
of paternal things.

Speaker 1 (00:59):
That's been and that's been the absolute best.

Speaker 4 (01:02):
And ww's schedule is unique that the schedule for the
champion is indeed an aggressive schedule, but I still get
time every week with my girls and that's just the best.
Seeing three years old, where they start to verbose and
opinionated and repeating things you say, oh the best.

Speaker 2 (01:23):
My daughter turns one in about two weeks.

Speaker 1 (01:27):
Nice.

Speaker 2 (01:28):
Yeah, so you have you spoke to your wife about
what sport you want to put her in, like the
very first sport.

Speaker 4 (01:34):
So she's right now, So at three, she's putting her
toes in the water on dance and gymnastics. And again
we're we had parents. I think both Brandy and I
who it's on you like, they weren't overly like stage
dad stage mom in terms of overly pushing it.

Speaker 1 (01:54):
We really want her to whatever she enjoys.

Speaker 4 (01:57):
My wife figure skated at a very high level in
Detroit for years, and some of these videos you see
of her just like blown my mind in terms of
if I, you know, didn't see her face, I think
it's another person because the grace that's involved.

Speaker 1 (02:11):
This is the thing I know nothing about.

Speaker 4 (02:12):
You know, I know nothing about competitive figure skating, but
it would be cool. Libby's been on the ice a
few times with her mom and just kind of you know,
waddles around but actually can stay up on her feet,
and that would be really special if she.

Speaker 1 (02:25):
Wanted to get into that. Again, I also am looking.

Speaker 4 (02:29):
For the most financially not brushing child sport because as
you know, they're they're all year round now basically, and
whatever you tell me, I'm gonna whatever we need, I'm
gonna get it. We're gonna do it. But figure skating
would be pretty cool. Whatever she wants to do. She
seems like she might be a bit of an academic,

(02:49):
Like she's got kind of a raven call mine to
herself where I can tell like, oh, I'm worried because
in two years, she's gonna be smarter than me. You
know what I'm saying, Like I got time.

Speaker 1 (03:00):
But not much.

Speaker 2 (03:02):
So in your business, in your career world, you are
the face, if you will, of the company. What is
kind of an unknown aspect of carrying that title physically
carry the WE title, but also being kind of the guy.

Speaker 4 (03:17):
Well, it's not something that you take for granted and
you might think like, yeah, duh, that makes sense. But basically,
one of the things I've noticed that I really really
like is it is very very like winning an election
in terms of WW helps build a team around you.
You get dedicated people, which I never had a dedicated

(03:38):
person in terms of you have a dedicated person from
talent relations, you have a dedicated person from travel you
have these dedicated individuals who we do a little weekly
meeting every it's you know, small little cabinet meeting every
Friday at SmackDown. And the schedule is just hilarious. This
is where we need to go, this is where we
need to be. Matt my driver, he's going to be here.

Speaker 1 (03:58):
Boh blah blah. It's just really organized.

Speaker 4 (04:01):
And that might be ww now in general, it might
not just be me who's receiving.

Speaker 1 (04:07):
That kind of treatment.

Speaker 4 (04:08):
But I have really enjoyed it and also really relied
on it. I actually was at WWHQ this past week
asking one of my higher ups, hey, does it get
bigger like this? This seems like it requires a lot
of people and God bless them, like that's awesome, amazing,
but does it get bigger?

Speaker 1 (04:26):
And the answer is yep, it just gets bigger. So
I thought, okay, all right.

Speaker 2 (04:31):
So talking about kind of the higher ups and thinking
about TKO, they recently announced that they're going to kind
of cut back on live events next year or starting
next year. What is the pros and cons to taking
talent off the road as putting your EVP hatback on.

Speaker 4 (04:49):
Yeah, pros and cons. You know, a pro is more
time for rest recovery. Were the modern WW with all
the medical protocols that exist in terms of, you know,
to have the best nutrition, to have you know, the
mental clarity, the focus to be dialed in physically, we
still very much are a you know, I guess toxic

(05:11):
two degree but heavyweight like that. This is a there
is a vanity element to professional wrestling and sports entertainment.
So in terms of everyone's preparation, that's a good thing
in terms of being able to get that mental clarity,
to be able to get your time at home, but
also be able to be locked in on work, to
be able to get the best nutrition, the best recovery. Especially.

Speaker 1 (05:32):
You know they have all these things now with.

Speaker 4 (05:34):
The cold plunges and version tables, blah blah. I mean
just you know, I'm at DDP Studio now and half
the stuff is in here.

Speaker 1 (05:41):
So but the con for me is I only get
better at wrestling by wrestling. So that's a con for me.

Speaker 4 (05:51):
How I can kind of mitigate it is I have
the Nightmare Factory where we can wrestle and do things
and and train, but training for wrestling, like I never
believed in wrestling schools growing up because the only way
you can really do wrestling is by wrestling.

Speaker 1 (06:07):
In front of it.

Speaker 2 (06:08):
By doing it, yeah, by doing it.

Speaker 1 (06:10):
You got to do it in front of an audience.

Speaker 4 (06:11):
And that will be a challenge for me because I
feel like I've really kind of slid into the prime
of my career and I feel really great. But I
know if I take some steps back in terms of that,
I'm gonna have to mitigate it some way. I'm gonna
have to find, Okay, how do I train for this
if I'm not able to do Saturday Sunday house shows
heading into a Monday night roll per se. I think

(06:34):
the majority of the locker room and roster probably looks
at it as a really great thing, and from a
company standpoint, business wise, it makes the shows when they
do come to your city even more special versus just
being a given. So it's mainly pros across the board.
I just have to find a way to kind of
keep the wrestler in me wrestling.

Speaker 2 (06:55):
So you mentioned DDP yoga. I spoke to someone yesterday
and with the Superstar crossover, my last guest has a
question for you, and he spoke about DDP yoga how
it's helped him because my question was basically like, how
are you alive?

Speaker 4 (07:07):
Dog?

Speaker 2 (07:08):
And that should be tipping you off a little bit.
Darby Allen, Yeah, wants to know.

Speaker 3 (07:13):
Well, first of all, I'd like to say thank you
for getting me to ae W. I wouldn't be here
if it wasn't for Cody Road, So thank you for
Cody Road. So here's a question. Does he think I
can actually be the face of ae W? Does he
believe I could be the face of AEW because he
got me here and he was here from day one
when mister Darby was so insecure and didn't know his

(07:34):
true worth. Does he think I have what it takes
to carry AW in the future?

Speaker 1 (07:38):
Heal? The real Derby wants to know this question? Yes,
or had about fake Darby online? Asking for Darby?

Speaker 2 (07:45):
Now I sat literally he was talking.

Speaker 1 (07:47):
This is real Derby, Yeah, real Derby Allen.

Speaker 2 (07:49):
I could say some stuff if he wants to prove
it some more.

Speaker 1 (07:52):
So the answer is a guaranteed yes.

Speaker 4 (07:55):
But don't let Darby fool you. He was never insecure
and he was never not confident. The RB is almost
over confident. And that's what we do. We talk smack,
we wrestle each other. This is entertainment. I don't mind it,
but sometimes your overconfidence is actually arrogance when in his case,
instead of it being arrogance, the experience that he's had

(08:17):
now with Sting, the experience he's had seeing the different
changes in the company, all of that, that is the
experience that you need to lead you to where you
see the clarity and you see the moment and go, hey,
I can be you know, I hate using this terminology,
but I can be the guy absolutely one hundred percent
could potentially be the person. But but and here's the butt,

(08:41):
that spot is available to far more people than we think.

Speaker 1 (08:44):
In every company.

Speaker 4 (08:45):
Everyone thinks it's about Oh, it's the politics, it's about.

Speaker 1 (08:48):
Who you know.

Speaker 4 (08:49):
There's a degree of that in everything. Sure, but it's
so much more fair than you think. If you look
in the mirror and you say, hey, I want to
be in John Cena spot. Look at John Cenas schedule
for the day. If you can do it, then perhaps
you're on the path to getting that spot. If you
can do it every day, then perhaps you do get
the spot. If you can do it every day plus one.

Speaker 1 (09:10):
Then it's yours.

Speaker 4 (09:11):
And I think it's a far more fair business than
people think, so one hundred percent, but there are other
people that I would say that about as well. He
certainly shouldn't be remotely in doubt on whether he could
do that or not.

Speaker 1 (09:22):
But also like the.

Speaker 4 (09:24):
Stupid climbing mountains and he getting hit by buses. You
can't be the face of the company if you're not
relied upon.

Speaker 1 (09:31):
You know what I'm saying. You can't wrestle anybody, and
you're a body cast. So that's dumb, But I say
that with love.

Speaker 2 (09:39):
Of course. He credited a DDPO again apparently has stuff
in his basement that heals him up. We got to
wrap this up. But you mentioned something earlier about kind
of cringe worthy sayings if you will, so that kind
of got me thinking. Yesterday with Darby, he said he
hates the term pillar. He thinks it's corny. He just
doesn't like it. Is there a wrestling term that maybe
you hear or see on social media with fans that

(10:01):
you're like, everyone, fucking stop it please?

Speaker 4 (10:04):
So I would say, like every term, But the truth is,
the wrestling fan owns the terms.

Speaker 1 (10:11):
So a lot of times when we have students.

Speaker 4 (10:14):
Of the Nightmare Factory who say they listen to Cornett's
podcasts or Conan's or Meltzer or genre of SAP, whatever
it may be. Sometimes the terminology say they just watch
an inside movie like Ironcall. Even sometimes the terminology seeps
in and they say it as if they know its function,
And in wrestling you really don't know its function. Like

(10:37):
I've never met someone who can properly tell me what
the term KFA means. I have not met a single
individual who can tell me the one word definition of
kfaid haven't met them. However, I don't mind when it's
said I love when I see the term heat, because
heat is wildly overused. However, you guys own the terms.

Speaker 1 (10:58):
None of that stuff said in the locker room never here.

Speaker 4 (11:01):
I don't know. Man, watch the gimmick and KFE this,
none of this is said, we don't. This is not
a pirate chip. But yeah, you guys own the term.
So none of them make me cringe. Every now and
then in an interview, when you hear one in a question,
you'll see like a and all that.

Speaker 1 (11:17):
Means is oh no, oh he knows he or she
knows it.

Speaker 4 (11:21):
All here I am because for me, that's what I
tell these students at the school.

Speaker 1 (11:25):
You should never know it all always.

Speaker 4 (11:28):
If you like, if you like what Cornett has to say, great,
check this one out. It's it shouldn't learn it all,
learn it all, be a master of everything, and you'll
be far more prepared to do what you can do.

Speaker 2 (11:42):
So, so we got to wrap this up in about
a minute. I'm just gonna shoot you quick, rapid.

Speaker 1 (11:45):
Fire, quick, fisty seconds.

Speaker 2 (11:46):
Here we go. Do you believe in Joe Hendry.

Speaker 1 (11:50):
Yeah, he's great. He's a good kid, really good.

Speaker 4 (11:52):
I like him.

Speaker 1 (11:53):
You don't have to wrap it up in sixty seconds.

Speaker 4 (11:55):
By the way, Stephanie's just she's just pushing you.

Speaker 2 (11:58):
You know what it is.

Speaker 4 (11:59):
I seconds.

Speaker 2 (12:00):
I like to be respectful of time, unlike some other
people this morning. So gentleman named Rubin on the Mania
Club Facebook page, he wants to know what is your
dream match? Now?

Speaker 1 (12:11):
Oh oh, this is a tough answer.

Speaker 4 (12:15):
Uh I. My goal is to main event WrestleMania, and
who I may event WrestleMania with is my dream match?

Speaker 1 (12:26):
And I do not have that answer. I do not
know what that is.

Speaker 4 (12:30):
I might have an inkling, I might have a hint,
I might have multiple hints. I might have different doors
to open, but that, to me is my dream match.
I don't mean to give a cop out answer, but
in this moment where you're holding the north start of
the business, everyone is the one you want to be
the dream match.

Speaker 2 (12:46):
Tatana wants to know. Is there kind of a plan
in place in regards to your daughter consuming your matches
and how she watches wrestling?

Speaker 1 (12:54):
I think, now this is really help the top my head.

Speaker 4 (12:57):
I think now the plan is she just watches the entrances,
just watch the interest, is the pageantry, here's some fireworks.
She can do the woe. We've seen the woe a
few times, but.

Speaker 1 (13:08):
The physical aspect of it, I am not.

Speaker 4 (13:12):
I haven't figured out what mine is. You know, my
father raised me old school. It was one hundred percent real.
I don't know if that's the strategy you want to take,
but also it worked for me, So we'll plan. I
will probably defer to Brandy in terms of how much
she consumes.

Speaker 2 (13:30):
Winged legal title. Bruh, what are we doing with that?
What's up?

Speaker 4 (13:33):
So?

Speaker 1 (13:34):
I'm so glad you asked.

Speaker 4 (13:35):
Please know anyone who ever heard me say the words
winged eagle title. I actively am still on the hunt
I am still on the mission and if anything I
have shown in the past, even if it's in you know,
for a single night or fleeting, I try to be
a man of my word.

Speaker 1 (13:52):
So I'm working on it.

Speaker 2 (13:55):
Final question, I want to know best advice you have
for a girl.

Speaker 3 (13:58):
Dad?

Speaker 4 (13:59):
For a girl, Oh man, that's the toughest question you
asked by The best advice for her, old dad?

Speaker 1 (14:18):
Spoil them right.

Speaker 4 (14:22):
You can have boys and train them to be your
predecessor or whatever the heck, or you know, rub buttermilk
on their calves to be superstar athletes, whatever it is.
But my daughter at eleven eleven every night, I make
the same wish. She will never want for anything, and
if that means she's spoiled, and that means twenty years
from now, the entertainment has to deal with, you know,

(14:43):
entertainment industry has to deal with her being a princess
all over the place. She will always know she is
the princesses of our family, and I will spoil her
to the ends of the earth.

Speaker 1 (14:51):
If that's irresponsible, sue.

Speaker 2 (14:53):
Me, I love that one more time.

Speaker 4 (14:56):
I don't actually sue me, by the way, nobody likes
to get sued.

Speaker 2 (14:59):
So one more time, Cody Rose. I appreciate you, Bro,
Thank you so much.

Speaker 1 (15:02):
Thanks my friend, thank you
