And thank you for joining us for Talking the Rock.
DJ Taylor in the studio, joined by Jen and ar
Lean from the Arkansas Single Parent Scholarship Fund.

Speaker 3 (00:20):
Ladies, how are you?

Speaker 4 (00:21):
We're good, Thanks for having us.

Speaker 5 (00:23):
So exciting to be here.

Speaker 2 (00:24):
Absolutely, thank you for coming in. And first and foremost,
I want to say thank you for what you do
for the parents and the children of parents that are
receiving these scholarships. I have a friend of mine that
got it for like three four semesters when she was
in college and just a huge help for people across
the state of Arkansas. Now, for those that don't know,
let's start with the first question. What is the Arkansas

(00:47):
Single Parent Scholarship Fund.

Speaker 6 (00:50):
So, Arkansas Single Parent Scholarship Fund is a nonprofit dedicated
to ending single parent poverty through higher education. And we
do this through two primary ways. One through flexible scholarships.
So every semester, single parents can apply for a scholarship
that they can then spend on items that are you know,

(01:11):
maybe in the way of getting to their degree, whether
that's gas or childcare, maybe they do need some extra
help with their tuition. And then we pair that flexible check,
that flexible scholarship with development workshops like how to write
a resume, how to make budget friendly meals, how to
repair their car, mental health tips. And we also do

(01:33):
kind of as well, do some mentoring, so kind of
official and unofficial. You know, our program managers and volunteers
are incredible at, you know, listening to our single parent
students helping them find other resources on their campus to
make sure they're successful in their academic career and graduate
and find a job with family supporting wages.

Speaker 3 (01:51):
It is fantastic.

Speaker 2 (01:53):
And you know, as a guy that went to college
as a single dad, I can attest it is. I mean,
it's difficult no matter where you go, when you go,
but adding being a parent and all the rules and
all the bills and everything else that comes into it,
it is it is truly a difficult process. And I
know that the Arkansas Single Parent Scholarship Fund has been

(02:16):
helping parents and their kids for over thirty years. I
mean this started back in the nineties, right.

Speaker 5 (02:22):
It definitely did started in nineteen ninety. It was a
grassroots startup and moved into Central Arkansas and Central Arkansas
then merged into the state wide organization in twenty nineteen.

Speaker 2 (02:36):
Okay, so it has been around for a long time,
and you guys have been helping students, Like I said,
so many over twenty thousand students.

Speaker 4 (02:45):
Wasn't it something about there?

Speaker 6 (02:47):
You know, for thirty four years we've been helping low
income single parents. We're thinking about seventeen thousand of them
and their children, you know, create create better lives through
higher education.

Speaker 2 (02:58):
Fantastic. And then I mean just this year alone, there
have been a lot of students, a lot of recipients,
a lot of scholarships awarded. Over the three terms that you.

Speaker 5 (03:09):
Cover, sure have and Spring, Summer and fall of twenty
four we awarded eight hundred and forty three recipients for
a total of one million, one hundred and thirty nine
two hundred dollars.

Speaker 2 (03:20):
Wow, that's very accurate and thirty seven cents. But you
know what that all that money helps to make sure
that people can get the education that they need. And
then combined with all the resources from the Arkansas Single
Parent Scholarship Fund, to get resumes together, to find the

(03:42):
job that's right for that diploma, just to get that degree.
I know, for me, I had to go back. Life
got in the way. I went back, and it was
for me, it was more about the vindication of yes,
I finally did that. But there are families that are
trying to better themselves and to get that better job,
that better lifestyle for their families, and this is one

(04:06):
huge way that can help for a lot of folks.
As a matter of fact, I know we're into the
fall semester now, Spring is right around the corner here,
it is. We're not even into October. We're already talking
about spring semester and the Arkansas Single Parent Scholarship Fund
looking to help folks coming up next year as well.

(04:28):
Now I guess it hasn't opened quite yet for applications,
but yeah.

Speaker 6 (04:32):
So applications for the spring semester will open November November
one through December one. So single parent students, we would
love to have you apply. You go to our website
and there's a bunch of links that'll take you to
the application, submit some supporting documents and friendly scholarship committee.

Speaker 4 (04:51):
Well, we'll contact you to get an interview.

Speaker 3 (04:54):
Well, what is that web address?

Speaker 6 (04:55):
By the way, it is www dot asp SF dot org.

Speaker 3 (05:02):
All right, super easy to remember.

Speaker 2 (05:04):
And of course, like you were saying, there's a few
things to submit and fill out. Very simple process from
what I've always heard.

Speaker 4 (05:12):
Essays required.

Speaker 2 (05:13):
Y you write enough essays when you're in class, you
don't need to do one after class. And then of
course these scholarships are submitted and then the awards when
they come out, Like you were saying earlier, they don't
just go directly to the school. This isn't specifically tuition
based because if you're a single parent, odds are good.

(05:35):
You've got a job, you've got a car, you've got
a mortgage, you've got electricity in your house, you got
bills to pay, you got kids to feed, and so
this money goes genuinely to just to help make ends
meets more than anything else.

Speaker 5 (05:51):
That's one of my favorite things about the scholarship is
that our students usually have funding to pay for their
to but they don't have the extra money for gas
money back and forth to school. You know, if I
have a flat on the way home today, I mean
that that's not going to be fun, but it's not

(06:11):
going to be super hard on me budget wise, But
one of our students has a flat at ULR and
doesn't have an ability to fix their tire, that could
end their education right there. But our dollars go into
their hands that can be used to get a new
set of tires, that could be used to fix their car,
to pay rent, to buy groceries, you know, back to

(06:34):
school supplies. And so that's the greatest thing in my
opinion about our scholarship. It's more than just a scholarship.
It's money to keep them going.

Speaker 3 (06:42):
Very true.

Speaker 2 (06:43):
You can get those loans, you can get the Pelgram,
you can get whatever you've got going on, but that
stuff goes pretty much straight to the school, and if
you're lucky, there's a few bucks left over.

Speaker 3 (06:53):
I know.

Speaker 2 (06:53):
For me, one of the hardest things was trying to
figure out where I was going to come up with
the seven eight hundred dollars just for books. I mean,
some people are lucky they get you something for that,
but yeah, the books are pretty expensive, the supplies are
very expensive, and then of course everyday life is obviously
very expensive as well. And of course the best part

(07:14):
about this is you guys are a nonprofit. You're just
here to help. You want to help as many families
as possible. It requires a lot of volunteer hours, it
requires a lot of donations. If somebody wants to help out,
what is a good way to do that? Do you
take volunteers right now?

Speaker 4 (07:31):
Or absolutely? You can volunteer anytime.

Speaker 6 (07:33):
Just again, go to our website again ASPSF dot org
and you can sign up to become a volunteer. Help
us with those scholarship applications by reviewing them or even
helping students fill them out because computer skills, that's something
we have to teach many of our students as well.
But also it's fun to celebrate them as well. We
have scholarship ceremonies. Just last night here in Little Rock,

(07:58):
we had a family funne at the Museum of Discovery.
Thanks to a partnership with the Charles A. Fruhoff Foundation
and the Museum of Discovery. Our families had so much fun.
There was like three hundred people packed into the Museum
of Discovery. We celebrated their fall semester ate, some pizza,
got some prizes and when it was so wonderful. So

(08:19):
we need help coordinating events like that, But Also, a
big thing that's coming up here for us is our
big fundraiser is going to be on October seventeenth here
in Little Rock. It's called the Lunch Break, so we'd
love to see you there. We're going to honor some
of our outstanding philanthropy partners and companies and schools. Some
of those local people here include, you know, the University

(08:43):
of Arkansas Little Rock is a finalist in our school category,
along with University of Arkansas, Pulaski Tech College, Yeah, UAPTC,
and we're you know, we've got Simmons Bank Southern Bank
Coorus finalists. We want to celebrate them for being our
biggest supporter and how amazing they are to help us
do our own work. We're going to have some student speakers.

(09:05):
We're going to have a delicious lunch. It's gonna be
a great time.

Speaker 3 (09:08):
Sounds like a fantastic time.

Speaker 2 (09:10):
We want to we want to name drop a little
bit about who's supplying lunch, how that's gonna happen, or.

Speaker 4 (09:15):
We're getting catering from the Heritage Company.

Speaker 3 (09:18):
Okay, all right, but it's going.

Speaker 4 (09:20):
To be delicious.

Speaker 6 (09:21):
My colleague has been you know, taste and testing and
she's living it up, you know, telling us how great
it's gonna be.

Speaker 5 (09:27):
That event is really a lot of fun too, because
we have student speakers that come up and tell their story,
and of course our partners get up and talk about it.
I mean, who cannot spare an hour to come over
and have some great food and hear one of our
student speakers and learn about this great organization.

Speaker 6 (09:43):
And one of the student speakers is actually a twenty
eleven ASPSF alum. He attended Plaski Tech. His name is
Kwame Abdul Bay and so eleven years ago, like I said,
he we've been around a long time. And this man
he at that time he was a homeless veteran taking
care of his baby girl, and today he is an

(10:05):
elections coordinator. He runs his own nonprofits. He's married now
has a few more kids. But he's also running for
state representative here in the state of Arkansas. And so
we are just so excited to have him come share
his journey and how you know we played a small
part or a large part into his life and how
education transforms well, I'm just going.

Speaker 2 (10:26):
To throw it out there, small world. I actually know Kwame.
We had a chance to talk not too very long ago.
And yeah, just a fascinating story, and that in itself
is worth going to the lunch. I feel now, if
somebody wants to be a part of this, if they
want to attend, what's the best way to do that.
You buy a ticket at the door, You buy a
ticket online. How does that work?

Speaker 6 (10:48):
Be online ASPSF dot org, slash lunch break and you
can get a ticket right there.

Speaker 4 (10:55):
Become a sponsor, it's not too late.

Speaker 6 (10:57):
We'd love to have you and promote your your company,
yourself as a supporter of single parent families.

Speaker 2 (11:03):
And one of the things I do want to point
out is you attend the lunch, you buy the ticket,
you come, you have a great meal, you hear these
great stories, and not only that, you're going to be
helping folks here in Arkansas get that higher education that
they deserve, that they need, that they want, and know
that you're helping these folks for a better life. It's

(11:24):
absolutely fantastic. Now, let's talk about a ticket. Price is
fifty dollars okay, so not bad for lunch. I mean
you get a table, maybe your workplace wants to get
a table, and everybody gets to go have lunch and
hear these speakers, find out how you can help, find
out how you can volunteer or donate. And then on
top of that, you've also got a great, great time

(11:47):
to just kind of hang out and have a fantastic lunch.

Speaker 6 (11:50):
Absolutely, and if you can't make it not a problem,
you can donate on our website as well. And what's
really great right now is we have a matching match opportunities,
so your donation can be matched up to three times.

Speaker 3 (12:06):
Wow.

Speaker 6 (12:07):
So we've got some generous supporters who are helping us out,
you know, supply more scholarships and workshops. So please donate,
and you know, make the most out of your donation.

Speaker 2 (12:17):
And that is a sp SF dot org if you
want to go buy the website there and check all
of that stuff out. And of course, you know so
many great things that y'all are doing to help folks
right here in Arkansas. Again, that lunch is coming up
on October seventeenth here in Little Rock.

Speaker 3 (12:33):
Where's where's it going to be at.

Speaker 4 (12:35):
It'll be at City Center on Shackleford.

Speaker 5 (12:38):
That is on Shackleford, right down from the Big Church.

Speaker 2 (12:41):
I sorry to say, it's just right down the road anyway,
here from the studio. So that's fantastic and a great opportunity.
Now you did mention sponsorship opportunities are available, yes, for
this event.

Speaker 3 (12:52):
Now what's the deadline for that to.

Speaker 6 (12:54):
Be included in all of our you know, day of
sponsorship materials. I believe that's October one, okay, but obviously
we'd love your support even if it's past that. But
please please contact us to get involved.

Speaker 2 (13:09):
Absolutely, So, local businesses, you want to help out, local residents,
you want to do your part in the community. A
great way to do that with the Arkansas Single Parent
Scholarship Fund that is ASPSF dot org. You got tickets
for the luncheon, You've got ways to donate, ways to volunteer,
and know that you're helping out a fantastic cause.

Speaker 1 (13:29):
Jack.

Speaker 6 (13:30):
We get to thank our presenting sponsor, Yes, yes, Test,
Carol and Wit Stevens. So I really want to thank
them for their incredible support to us and honestly also
to their daughter Arden. She provided a grant for some
of our Little Rock recipients to send their children to
summer camps this summer. So the Stevens family is we

(13:52):
were honored to be to receive their funds and their gifts.

Speaker 3 (13:55):
Absolutely.

Speaker 5 (13:56):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (13:56):
That is another thing that is always pressing if you're
a parent, is what are you going to do in
the summer when the kids are out? You got to
find a way, and some of those camps are kind
of pricey, so definitely good to know that the Scholarship
Fund helps out with that as well. Thank you so
much for coming in, Jen Arlene, I cannot thank you enough.

Speaker 5 (14:16):
For what you do, so much for having us, thank you,
thank you for sharing your time.
