(00:00):
Welcome and thanks for tuning in forTalk of the Rock public affairs, community
events, and public services for CentralArkansas from the iHeartRadio Studios in Little Rock.
Here's your host, DJ Taylor, and thank you for joining us.
I'm DJ Taylor and I'm joined byDeanna Baney. She is an oncology nurse
at UAMS. She's a local children'sauthor, and she's also the person that
(00:22):
is bringing us the Cabot July Jubileethat's coming up. How are you,
Dianna, I'm good. How areyou doing? Fantastic? And joining the
nice weather, the fact that it'ssummertime. Ready to get out with the
kids and just do things this summer, you know, it's always a great
time. And that's why I'm soexcited about July sixth and the Cabot July
Jubilee. Now, this is goingto help a whole lot of people with
(00:44):
a whole lot of stuff. Wheredid the idea come from? So I've
been on College of Nurse at UAMSthe past almost eight years now, well
five years there going on six.I've just first, but I became well
started writing to help with the sadnessof the loss from all of my cancer
patients because I get really attached tothem sure, and I started becoming a
(01:07):
children's book Arthur. I published myfirst book back in January, thank You,
and then went on ar style kindof got a little platform. People
started knowing me outside of my patients, and I've been wanting to do something
to give back to them because theygo through so much and these treatments are
expensive. I've had people lose theirhomes before their cars. They're not able
(01:32):
to work, especially with the bloodcancers that I deal with, So just
wanted to get back to them. And I came up with this to help
the community out because a lot ofsmall businesses in Cabot have been struggling since
the pandemic and everything, and ithelps them. It's the community coming together
for greater calls. And I washoping to have a blood drop there too,
(01:57):
but found out today that unfortunately theydon't have enough style for that.
That seems to be a nationwide problemright now, that's true, so we're
going to do it. Be thematch drive there though for stem cells.
So fantastic now as a guy thathas cancer issues in our family, one
undergoing treatment as we speak, Thankyou first and foremost for what you do
(02:21):
on the daily and for what we'vegot coming up because the cabbage July.
Do you believe this is going tobe a lot of fun? Like you
said, there's a stem cell matching. Let me hear a little more about
that. So actually, one ofmy former patients, she went on ar
style with me last week. Shehas been really through it the past six
years. She's had two stem celltransplants. That's for blood cancers usually,
(02:46):
so they take somebody else's stem cellsand they put them into their body after
they've been treated for cancer. Andthe hope is because everything's about hope with
cancer treatment, sure, yeah,is that after five years they're considered cured.
I use that term loosely because itcan always relapse. But these stem
(03:08):
cells get in, they make newsales, and they make the person feel
almost the same that they did beforeyou know, they got cancers. Right,
So basically, for those playing along, the short version is is the
person goes in for treatment, theyget done with their treatments, they go
into remission. And with these treatments, these stem cell treatments, they're able
(03:30):
to after five years go to astage beyond remission. Basically, basic Okay,
So that's fantastic and that's a greatway that you can help others.
I know our Kansans are all abouthelping their friends and neighbors, and that's
one thing that you can do.And it's not an invasive procedure to be
tested to see if you can match. No. So one of the ladies
(03:51):
you ams, Michelle Hendrix, she'sover the stem Cell Coordination, so she
finds matches for people. It's allover the country. Most of our usually
come from European countries like Germany. So basically they just go in with a
little swab and they swab the insideof your cheek and that's it. They
send them off for testing and thenthere's a ball mirror in stem cell registry
(04:15):
that they can find a match forthem, like people that are waiting for
stem cell transplants. So it's abig database and if somebody is in need,
I mean we're talking about life's threateningsituations here and places where you could
genuinely save a life just in afew minutes and definitely helping out there.
And then of course a lot offun stuff going on for the family cabat
(04:40):
July Jubilee, you got all kindsof vendors are going to be out there.
Yes, so we have at leastover forty vendors last time I checked.
But it's at the Cabot Veterans EventCenter. The whole center has been
rented for this event. So wehave local small businesses like Say and Treats.
They're going to be there. Yes. Amy's the owner. Her husband
(05:04):
actually passed from cancer, so alot of people this is personal for so
she's gonna be there. She's gonnahave one of her workers there handing out
samples and you know, promoting herbusiness. We have nodded. I think
it's not in painted. They docrochet animals that are absolutely fantastic for your
(05:27):
kids, the little stuffed animals. There is a boutique in Bologna that's going
to be there. It's over Yonder, Ruffles and More. I hope I'm
saying that right. I can't rememberit off the top of my head.
But Courtney, I think, isthe owner there, and she's amazing small
business owner. She's going to havesome of her kids clothing and stuff there,
(05:47):
So Bookish Imporium and Hebrew Springs. She is the only she's the owner
and the only operator of her wholething. She's a phenomenal woman. I
didn't know, yes, so shewill not be able to be there in
person, but I'm going to pickup some supplies from her store, and
my sister in law will actually beworking her booth there, So we're gonna
(06:11):
have a whole bunch of people there. There's a couple of local arthurs like
myself included, that are just gonnabe there with our books, just tons
of good things, a lot ofpeople there. Adults can get in for
five dollars a piece in kids twelveand underget in free. So we're also
having two bounce houses. One ofthem is a pirate ship. Cool I
(06:35):
might be found there, I know. And then there's a princess castle for
little girls. And then we're alsogoing to have some games and stuff set
up for the kids as well asa photo booth fantastic. And then we
have five food trucks. We tryto get variety because it's hot. There's
(06:55):
gonna be a ohonna Ice that shedoes, shake ups, coffees, lemonades.
Then we have the VP's barbecue andsoul food Oh good choice, yes,
right, And then there is TwistedGrill that has smashed up burgers and
Nacho's, Mike's rolled ice cream, and then there is a Mexican food truck
(07:16):
there too. Her name is Jojo, but I'm not sure whether her because
she never told me. Well that'sthat's all right, but you know what,
she's going to be there. There'sgonna be lots of food and I
think the best part about this isis, Yeah, there's gonna be food
trucks. There's gonna be stuff todo outside. There's also gonna be lots
of stuff to do inside and thecool and the air conditioning. Uh,
(07:36):
face painting, I understand, there'sgonna face love that. So Cat,
I can't remember her last name, but she's face painting by Cat. She
is going to be there. Theface paint and the bounce houses. All
that are is free to the kids. It's already been taken care of,
so just come out and have agood time with it. And she does
(08:00):
some really fantastic face artwork basically,So that is really cool. And you
know what I do want to talkabout this. You mentioned it is helping
out small businesses. They're in cabin. A lot of these vendors are coming
out and hanging out on a Saturday, and it's fourth of July weekend,
so that's a great time to getout and enjoy time with the family.
(08:20):
And also I want to talk aboutthe fact that the admission and proceeds from
all of this, where is allof that going. So it's going to
go into a private fund, andthis fun is going to be used towards
cancer patients undergoing treatments in their familiesbecause a lot of times you're automatically disabled
with dinosis, especially with the bloodcancers, because it depletes your whole blood
(08:43):
in your body. Sure, sothese patients are not able to work.
And I got this idea because acouple of years ago we had this patient
is real young lady. They camein and they lost everything and then she
wound up passing as well, soher husband and children were left without a
(09:03):
home, and it just broke myheart. It broke all the nurses hearts
on the floor because we wanted tohelp, but we weren't able to Sure
and we have so many sad storieslike this that keep happening, but this
is a way to get back tothem. So what we're going to do
is the nurses at UMS were teamingup to identify these patients early on,
(09:24):
because no nursing is holistic, sowe have to look at the whole patient,
and they're stressed in about that, and I believe stress and negativity doesn't
help them get better. Absolutely,So we're trying to take one of those
away by doing this event. SoI'm actually trying to form a nonprofit foundation
(09:46):
depending on how well the event goes. I lost my father when I turned
twenty. He died from heart disease, so he lived for eight years when
they told me only had six months. So this game me the whole idea
of, you know, holding onto hope. So it'll be called the
Leon Benjamin Hollis Senior Holding On toHope Foundation, because that's all that cancer
(10:09):
patients hold on to. They holdon to hope for one more second and
being with their families. And ifwe can give money back to them to
help with bills or whatever, andthey don't have to be homeless or worried
about what's going to happen if Idon't make it, then that's something that
maybe we can help out with alittle bit. Absolutely, mental health does
affect your overall health. That's beenproven time and time again. And if
(10:33):
there's one less worry on the table, then that is one better step towards
recovery, towards being in remission, towards getting to the step past remission in
some cases. So it's absolutely anincredible event. It's five dollars for adults
twelve and under get in free, and it's coming up on July sixth the
Veterans Events Center over in cabin Andnow do you have you said that You've
(10:58):
You've got a lot of vendors,You've got a lot of food trucks.
She got a lot of stuff goingon. But if somebody, say,
for example, wanted to get asponsorship, or if somebody wanted to make
a donation, maybe they can't makeit out, but they would still like
to donate. Is there a wayto do that byy me on Deanna Baney
Children's book, Arthur on Facebook oremail me at Dianna Bany Arthur at gmail
(11:20):
dot com and just tell me whatyou are wanting to do and we'll make
it work somewhere or another. AndI would like to add that I picked
this weekend because the very special patienthis family to me. I took care
of him for over two years whenI was dayshift and then switched to night
shift. And his name, becausethey give informission, is Darryl Birmingham.
(11:45):
Uh huh. He's from Manelia,Arkansas by Jans bro So. His wife
and his two sons were phenomenal people. He passed on July fourth. I
was this hospice nurse that weekend, and the family has touched a very special
place like many other ones have, and I wanted to do this to kind
(12:07):
of like celebrate him a little bittoo. That's why I wanted to pick
that day. Everybody's like, there'sother events going on this weekend, but
it was important for the first oneto be on that day because it helps
me personally agree with, you know, process and losing so many wonderful people
that we have. Of course, yeah, absolutely want enough put that out
(12:31):
there has significance in the date,So all right, mark your calendar July
sixth, eleven till five in cabinAll kinds of local businesses, local authors
will be there, bounce houses, face painting, food trucks, arts,
crafts, all of that stuff, and it's all to help cancer patients and
their families right here in central Arkansas. So definitely make sure that you attend
(12:56):
