(00:00):
Welcome and thanks for tuning in forTalk of the Rock public affairs, community
events, and public services for CentralArkansas from the Iyard Radio Studios in Little
Rock. Here's your host, DJTaylor, and thank you for joining us.
I am DJ Taylor and I amjoined by phone with Miss Joy Matt
Locke with a Little Rock Zoo.How are you Joy, it's been a

(00:20):
while. I'm fine, it hasbeen a while. I think it's the
first we've spoken this year. SoHappy New Year, mayor Christmas all that.
Yeah, Absolutely, Happy New Year, and Happy Saint Patty's Day,
Valentine's Day, all all the things. Happy, Happy upcoming Eclipse Day.
Oh my gosh. Yes, canyou believe we've been talking about the clips.
Actually, the entire state of Arkansashas been talking about the clips product

(00:42):
of the last year and a half, and at the Zoo we definitely started
talking about it, planning for itabout a year ago. And here it
is April eighth. On that Monday, the eclipse will be happening, and
we decided that we wanted to getin on the sun because we have a
unique placement in the city with allthese resident animals with us, and we

(01:04):
thought it'd be wonderful to figure outhow the animals may or may not react
and and buy everybody to come anddo the same along with us. Well,
I know that's been a lot inthe news about, you know,
how the animals at the zoo willreact. I saw that great interview on
THV eleven the other day about that, and it looks like it's going to
be. It's going to be aninteresting, a very learning experience, but

(01:26):
a very fun environment for the wholefamily. And you guys are are going
to have a lot of interactive activitygoing on for Eclipse Day. Tell me
a little bit about what's going on. We will, indeed, so if
anybody wants to come and join theSunday, we'll have to get their tickets
ahead of time on a little rogzoo dot com the pre purchase. But

(01:47):
we have actually two different options forpeople to come and enjoy and the wild
by the Eclipse at the Zoo.And so the first one is that general
admission tickets and that's gonna let theperson you purchase that come to the zoo.
They'll get a stet of classes toprotect theorize as they observe what's happening

(02:08):
up above. We'll have music upthroughout the zoo, and we'll have the
special Eclipse programming. We'll have educatorswalking around to answer questions to give a
little bit more information about the eclipse. And so it's a day where it'll
be really fun and educational and interactivefor people to come out and enjoy that.

(02:29):
And with that ticket, you're parkingis not guaranteed, because we know
everyone is interested in what's going tohappen for newclipse. But that's our general
admission ticket, all right. Sogeneral admission tickets, you get the glasses,
you get a day of interactive funat the zoo. My son absolutely
loves the bands that you bring inand the music that you guys. He's

(02:50):
a dancer. He loves to getout and dance to the music. So
that's gonna be a lot of funas well. So there's two types of
tickets. You got general admission. Now tell me about that VIP that you
guys have got. This sounds likethe perfect deal for a family. Now,
See, that is our VIP experience, and that ticket is reflects what
you're going to be able to enjoywhen you purchase that ticket. That ticket

(03:15):
gets you in for with six sixpeople can come in on that VIP experience.
The parking is guaranteed and that parkingspot will be in our gated lot.
The people who buy that experience willhave access to that lot beginning at
seven a m. On the eighth. And not only that, that ticket

(03:36):
gives permission for a brunch that willinclude Bloody Mary's and mimosas, and then
also a lunch later on in theday, I think about Newnish lunch will
be provided and they'll also have akind of Eclipse hospitality tent, you know,
that they can go back and forthto as a VIP holder, and
they also will have the ability togo out into the zoo to enjoy to

(04:00):
do as well. So that ticketlets them have that gated experience with their
own parking spot in the hospitality tent, and or can come into the zoo
and enjoy the activities that are happeningthere and maybe watch along with the animals
to seem with that what they maydo. So yeah, two different ways
to enjoy it. It will begreat fun either way, and we're hoping
that everyone comes along to experience thiswith us well. As a little rock

(04:24):
foodie, I got to ask andfeel free to name drop on this.
You said there's a brunch and alunch involved. What kind of food are
we talking? Who's bringing it?Who do we want to shout out to
on that? So on the breakfast, I think you got me stumped.
I'm not quite you. I cantell you that the lunch is Adam's catfish.
Oh yeah, so as our Kansaswe you know we like our catfish.

(04:46):
So come hungry, come ready tolearn a little bit about the clips,
Come ready to experience and make greatmemories of your family, and come
ready to eat too. That soundslike a fantastic day for a Clips day.
That is a eighth Uh. Ticketson sale now Little Rock Zoo dot
com. Uh, and make surethat you get those in advance. I
got a feeling that's going to sellout. That's going to be a huge,

(05:09):
huge time over there. Yeah, were ticket sales are going pretty steady
and we're excited about it. Well, and next on the list, I
also wanted to bring up about seasonpasses because if you're going to be doing
the Little Rock Zoo, you wantthose season passes. It's it's fun every
time you go, you see somethingdifferent. And those are on sale now

(05:30):
aren't they. They are there onsale all the time actually, so people
can come and get it, andI see some pass is really a great
deal because after you've come to thezoo, I want to say, it's
on your third visit, you've alreadymade your money back if you will,
or or what you what you wouldhave what you've paid for the season pass
is cheaper than what you would havepaid had you just come through time straight

(05:51):
out, because then you pay foryour actual ticket and then you pay for
parking, and so to have aseason pass that might get you and Bentley
members in it's a really great deal. Parking is free when you're a member,
you get I think up to fourfree carousel rides or train rides.
You also get discounts at some ofthe vendor areas within the zoo, and

(06:14):
discounsel with some of our programming forthose those paid, naming that we have
for children. So having a seasonpass just makes sense all the way around
if you are a zoogoer and azoo lover. That makes sure that you
and your family can get into thezoo three hundred and fifty five days from
the day that you purchase it andhave fun every day you want to come
in to us. And like yousaid, you know, there's a lot

(06:36):
of educational opportunities throughout the year atthe Little Rock Zoo. I know you
guys have been doing summer camps inthe past, and there's even some discounts
for that, so definitely worth pickingthose up. And plus, I just
want to throw this out there.I have co workers that went by the
zoo on spring break and they areseason pass holders. They've been going like

(07:00):
every week to see Dragon Kingdom. This is this is huge. A matter
of fact, one of my coworkershere was saying that she loved the Manta
Core most of all, but butthat every dragon in there is just an
amazing experience. What's What's what's thedeal on Dragon Kingdom? So the step
back a few steps to give theoverall reason why we went with that.

(07:24):
So the lunar calendar that I thinkis introduced to us here at the United
States from folks who are Chinese, that lunar calendar, this is the year
of the Dragons. It's the yearof the dragon. And you know,
I think last year might have beenthe Year of the Rabbit, and I
think the year before was year ofthe tire, but this year is the

(07:44):
year of the dragons. But wesaid, you know what, we can
roll with this. It's going tobe the year of the Dragons. A
little rock to do too, whynot? So to kind of bolster that,
we decided to have a traveling exhibitof dragons. So we have titled
it Dragon Kingdom. And it is, like your coworker said, it's amazing.
You walk to the castle gates. We have staff who actually built a

(08:09):
castle gate out of cedar wood withthe turrets on it and the flags at
the top and kind of like thedrawbridge looks to it. It's forges.
And that introduces you to the fourteenlarge animatronic dragons that are that will roar,
they flap their wings. They oneof them actually talks to you.

(08:33):
They move as you move past them, some of them breathe on you.
They are amazing, and so wejust thought, why not have dragons to
beef up the Year of the Dragonand to carry our things to the next
level. And the other reason whywe decided to bring dragons is because of
course they're mysical creatures. Different cultureshave had them throughout the various you know

(08:58):
centuries that you know humanity has existed, and as you walk around like you're
you said your coworker, life's theManta Core. You can read the story
about the Manta Core and what culturethat particular dragon comes from. But the
other reason why we decided to bringdragons is because there are some real life
creatures that still exist today that thedragons that we have from these different cultures

(09:20):
pulled the characteristic from. So we'llhave educators down there to say, Okay,
you like this particular dragon, Well, did you know that the colored
lizard, or did you know thatthe bearded dragon, or did you know
that the chicken has the type ofcharacteristics that this particular dragon is trying to

(09:41):
emulate? Chicken? You said chicken, Okay, I'm sold. I have
yes. A matter of fact, well, I'm not going to go into
it. I'm just going to waitfor you to come to the zoo and
learn for yourself. So, yeah, there are animals that we have walking
on our planet right now that youknow the characteristics have been kind of borrowed

(10:05):
from to create create the mysts arounddragons. So if you want to come
and leave the world for a littlewhile and walk into kind of a medieval
Renaissance type, you know, Gameof Thrones type of environment. Come to
the Little Rock Zoo. They didpremiere during spoon Break. Like you said,
your coworkers enjoy Jury spoon Break. But we're having them all the way

(10:30):
through September. So if you didn'tget a chance to come out Jerry spoon
Break, don't fret. You haveall the way through September to come see
them, and it's definitely worth thetrip. Well, and that new season
of the Game of Thrones spinoff showis coming up, so that might be
a really good way to get inthe spirit of that show. If you're
a fan, you go see DragonKingdom and get ready and then yeah,

(10:52):
then you can enjoy the show. And now, now this is just a
part of the zoo experience. Thisis a party your ticket or is there
a special ticket that you have toget for Dragon Kingdom? Thanks for bringing
that up, and no, itis a part of your ticket. You
do not have to have a specialticket for Dragon Kingdom. So after you
walked past the Bears or walk pastthe Rhinos, just walk on down to

(11:13):
the Dragon Kingdom and it's part ofwhat you've paid to get into the zoo.
Fantastic. I'm loving that. Also, I did want to bring up
that you guys have got a newprogram to help even more families have a
chance to visit the Little Rock Zoo. It's called Zoo for All. Tell
me about this program that you've gotgoing. Oh my, we are emotionally

(11:39):
invested and so excited to have thisprogram at the Little Rocks Zoo. It's
something that we've been talking about offand on and we were finally able to
enact it this year. We announcedit in March the seventh, and we've
already have had twenty five hundred peoplecome through the gate to take advantage.
So what is Zoo for All forAll is what we're calling our all access

(12:03):
program, if you will, foreveryone to be able to come to the
zoo, and specifically it's for peoplewho receive Snap benefits. I think also
people entertaine the word EBT card forit. But if a family member of
a person is a recipient of SnapSplash EBT, they can come to the
Zoom show their EBT card or Snapcard, so a photo ID that matches,

(12:28):
so we'll know that we're dealing withthe right person and that person is
able to purchase six admission tickets fortwo dollars apiece. Wow, and they're
parking is one dollar and that forever. It's not like we're doing it just
for the sun murgers, for thespring or whatever. No, that is
an implemented program that we're doing fromMarch seven forwards. And like I said,

(12:52):
we've already had twenty five hundred peoplecome and take advantage of it,
and we are thrilled ause we knowthat that means that that potentially those are
folks that might not have been ableto come to the zoo and that maybe
finance was a barrier for them, and that means so many more children will
be exposed to the zoo, exposedto the animals, and we are excited

(13:15):
about that because we know studies haveshown that when children, when people are
able to come to a zoo andhave an experience with an animal, have
some kind of interaction or have somekind of moment with that animal, that
the seeds of empathy are planted. And if they can feel empathetic with this
particular animal, then that can translateand often does, to filling empathetic with

(13:39):
somebody that they might meet on thestreets. And so if we can give
that opportunity for a family that maynot have had the chance otherwise to come
to this living classroom, travel withthe world in an afternoon by seeing these
animals, plant the seed of empathyfor animals and for themselves and for others.
I mean, why not? Whynot do that? So we're excited

(14:01):
that we're able to bring this andit's something that's moving forward because because we've
decided that everyone to have the opportunityand the ability and and fulfill that desire.
They want you to come see thezoo. That's fantastic. I absolutely
love that, and I think it'sit's just it's wonderful to know that the

(14:22):
zoo is doing everything they can tomake sure that everyone gets to enjoy that
experience and get that learning opportunity.I honestly don't know what my kids would
do without the zoo. I mean, every time we're there, youngest goes
to the rhinos. We got wegot a daughter that that loves that loves
to see giraffes, We've got uhand the all of the different animals that

(14:46):
are in there so special and sofun. It's just it's such a wonderful
time and every time we go upthere. Like I said, you see
something different every visit to the LittleRock Zoo, and uh there's there's always
more questions, which is great whenthey're asking something they want to learn,
they want to know, and it'sjust to know that this opportunity is there

(15:09):
for families, is truly truly atreasure so zoo for all. To take
advantage of that, you just bringyour snap or EBT and your photo ID
and present it at the gate,Yes, sir, present at the gate.
Those ticket sales are at the gate, and then you can buy up
to six tickets for two dollars apieceand you're parking as a dollar and we

(15:33):
love it. We love it.That is absolutely incredible. And also I
understand that congratulations are in order.Over at the Little Rock Zoo. You
guys are getting ready for a babyshower for baby Koda. Yes, baby
Koda. He is the little brotherto baby Kassi, who was an orangutan

(15:56):
that was born four years ago nowand so coffee parents Barani and Bandar had
another little date and they produced babyCoda, and so he's the young baby
boy of the family. He's aboutgetting close to six weeks old now.
I believe so, and Mom hadhim out on exhibit pretty pretty quickly,

(16:19):
and so lots of zoo guests havebeen able to see him. And it
was really fun when we did hisgender reveal. His mom and dad and
big sister were opening up boxes onhabitat with all the blue tissue paper coming
out and everybody was cheering sided itwas a boy. In the next phase

(16:40):
was to have the naming contest, which we just completed uh the Friday of
spring break, and Coda was thename that got the most votes. And
so his name is baby Coda now. And but yeah, we do have
a wish list out for him upon our website that people can go in
and shower Mom Barani was gifts herto help her new baby enjoy the world.

(17:03):
That is fantastic. I would havenever thought about having an orangutan baby
wish list, but but that isfantastic and the fact that you can you
can go in and help out andthen go see this this adorable little baby
Coda. And I understand his nameactually comes from the region that he's from.
Is that right, Yeah, that'sright. So the the type of

(17:26):
orangutans that we have at the zooare from Borneo, and so a couple
of the names that were pitted againsteach other to vote for all represent and
I'll come from that area of Borneo, so so it's representative of his native
his native culture, if you will. So of course Oda, that is

(17:48):
fantastic. So I definitely go seebaby Coda at the Little Rock Zoo and
definitely go to a Little Rock Zoodot com and uh maybe maybe get a
little baby shower gift for mom anddad. That's that's a pretty cool way
to help out at the Little RockZoo and something else that you can do
to help out the Little Rock Zoo, to help out some of these programs
and to help out with these animalsand just to help with the day today

(18:11):
at the Little Rock Zoo. I'mexcited because coming up in April, you've
got Wild Wines coming back and thisis always a fun annual event sponsored by
o'loonis this year, so that's prettynice. Got to send a shout out
to them. And for those thatmay not be familiar, what is Wild
Wines. Well, so, WildWines is the Zoo's premiere of fundraising event.

(18:34):
It's actually been voted best Community Festivalfor about six or seven years in
a row now by the readers ofAY magazine. And it is a two
day wine festival where you can comeand stip, you can come and nibble
on food, and you can justenjoy zoo animals and meet some zood the

(18:55):
ambassadors and just have a really goodtime. It's a festival that back over
two days, and so the firstday is going to be of the first
evening, i should say, isFriday, April twenty sixth, and that's
our VIP Nights and that goes fromseven to nine pm. And those tickets
are available on Little Rocky dot com. And if you buy a VIP night

(19:15):
ticket, that actually gets you intoboth nights, so you get to do
VIP and the main event the nextnight. But what happens on VIP night
is that you have premiere wines, higher end wines that are going to be
introduced to you at the pavilion, and you will have nibbles from various restaurants
in Central Arkansas, namely Table fortytwo, Faslor Hall, Flyway, Rocktown,

(19:40):
Trios, Yah Yah, Cyprus,Social Petite, and Keep. So
those are the types of restaurants thatwill be represented on Friday evening for you
to be able to enjoy what theyhave for VIP Night. And then Night
two is Saturday, the twenty seventh, and that goes from seven to ten,
and that's the main event. Inany main event, I have for

(20:04):
get it, that's the second night. And like I said, if you
give the VIP night tickets, yourticket will get you in for this night
as well, or you can buyjust the main event ticket if you'd like.
And on the main event night therewill have over two hundred wines for
you to choose from. So Ibelieve, I believe it is utterly impossible
for someone to stample all two hundredwines. However, I think I've seen

(20:27):
severals have tried. But you cango you can go crazy if you want
to with the lines on Saturday night. And we'll have lots and lots of
restaurants represented. I'm not I won'tname them all, but we've got Community
Bakery, we have Eat My Catfish, we have Sizler Haul, we have
Yermo, we have Highland Dairy Cookingteam will be out there. We have

(20:49):
Lovelley coming out, Mo's nothing butCakes, Talk Thos for Life, Rice
Barbecue, so many big Bad Breakfastis another one, and Containa Laredo.
So many restaurants that if they've builtyour list to say, oh you know
what, day night, let's goto get Hi Loreto and you don't make

(21:10):
it out there, or let's goto Commury and you haven't made it out
there yet, Well this is yourchance. Get your one ticket, sample
all of them, and then you'llknow, Okay, for sure we're going
back to this restaurant, or forsure when I go to Olony's, I'm
gonna buy this wine because I lovedit when I've tasted it at a lot
of lines, So lots of thingsfor you to do, lots of experiences

(21:32):
for you to have one ticket onone night, So why not come out
and enjoy now. I do wantto point out that I'm gonna just take
a shot in the dark here andI'm gonna say Wild Wines probably a twenty
one and up event, Yes,sir, for sure, for sure.
So it's a twenty one, twentyone and up event. And it is
April twenty sixth, is the VIPnight, April twenty seventh the main event

(21:53):
night. And yeah, I'm adad, I can I can spot a
dad joke a mile away. That'sthat's a good one there with the main
m A n E. Main event, and you know what, I and
listening to that list. Like Isaid earlier, I'm a foodie. I
have been for a long time.I can't think of one restaurant on that
list that I would pick over another. They're all so good. Now,

(22:18):
I will say, like you saida minute ago, this is a great
date night idea. Matter of fact, you can get a double date night
idea out of this because if youget the VIP tickets, you can get
those. You go Friday night andSaturday night, and there's a selection for
every taste. Okay. I cantell you from experience when you go out

(22:40):
there, especially for the main event, all those different restaurants, it doesn't
matter what you're in the mood for. Like you know how it is you
get out in the car and you'relike, huh, what do you want
to eat tonight? I don't knowwhat are you feeling the mood for.
It doesn't matter. You get outthere and you'll find whatever it is,
I promise, just a good placeand decisive. They can just pick from

(23:00):
whatever. You know what. That'sa good point. Yeah, yeah,
it's it's like, you know, everything in town pretty much is represented at
Wild Wines. So definitely a greatway to spend a date night. Now,
if somebody wants to get tickets forWild Wines, is that that's on
the website now or how do theyget tickets? Yeah, so they can
come to a Little Rock Zoo dotcom and they can go underneath our tab

(23:22):
at the top called Extra Fun andgo down to the Wild Wines page and
read a little bit more information fromwhat I gave just now and click on
whatever link from which night they wantto buy tickets and go from there.
All right, fantastic, And thenof course you know, a portion of
the proceeds going to go to helpout the Little Rock Zoo in every way

(23:44):
you can think of. It's alwaysa great time at the Little Rock Zoo.
And so many different things coming up. Also, this is this is
a little bit further down the calendar, but at the time of this broadcast,
the very first Community Day is comingup on March thirtieth. Now,
if you're listening on the radio,it may have already passed, but this

(24:06):
is going to be a quarterly event. Tell me a little bit about Community
Days too, while we're at it. Sure. Yeah, So this is
a new program that we are rollingout. It's Southern Bangcoort Little Rock Community
Days, and like you said,it will be quarterly, so we'll be
having another one in June, September, and I think December are the months,

(24:26):
but March thirtieth is the first, and it is a day where the
people who are residents of the cityof Little Rock can come to the Zoom
and show either a driver's license,a IV card, or maybe a utility
build that shows their residency that theylive in Little Rock, and they are

(24:48):
allowed to buy to get at twodollars apiece and the parking is one dollar.
Now that said, that doesn't meanit's just for Little Rock people to
come to the do that day.Everyone is welcome, and you live in
Conway, you can come to zoo. You live in the Jackson Villa ors
Littlerock, you can come to thezoo. But the folks who are eligible
for the two dollars admission price arepeople who are Little Rock residents. And

(25:14):
people might be wondering why just LittleRock. You know, you know why
that well, and it's because thezoo wants to say thank you to the
people whose taxes supports the zoo. When you are a resident of Little Rock,
there is a portion of every propertytax is that it comes out to
support our operations at the zoo.And so this is our way to say
thank you for that support that yougive to us. So, like I

(25:38):
said, everyone is welcome on Marchthirtieth and the other days that we will
have this. But if you're aresident of Little Rock and you can show
us the proof of that, youcan buy your tickets for two dollars a
piece. So we're excited. SouthernBank or have come along with us and
said we would love to support this. We are also community minded. We
think this is a great idea LittleRock Zoo. Can we come along in

(26:02):
help And so they have and we'reexcited about their partnership. And so this
will be the first of the onesthe for the year and we look forward
to how this program will roll outand how it will be enjoyed by the
citizens in the residents of Little Rockthroughout the year. That is fantastic.
So community Days that'll be a partof the website there Little Rock Zoo dot

(26:25):
com. We have covered so muchground today I'm going to try to recap
here really quickly. First of all, we've got Dragon Kingdom now through September,
and that is part of your LittleRock Zoo admission. If you're wondering
what it's about, or if youwant to see pictures, or if you
want to get more details, thatis Little rock Zoo dot com. Also,
if you're a Snap beneficiary or EBTbeneficiary, the New Zoo for All

(26:52):
program to be for you, andthat's available at the front gates anytime.
Just bring your Snap or EBT card, your photo ID. And that is
two dollars tickets. Is that right? Yes, two dollars tickets, and
they can purchase up to six ticketsfor two dollars apiece, all right,
and then also a special discount onparking as well. Parking is one dollar,

(27:12):
that's correct. That is fantastic. And now for the grand finale,
we're going to circle back to EclipseDay, which is coming up on April
eighth, just over a week fromthis broadcast. And there are general emission
tickets and there are VIP tickets.Let's run over those real quick one more
time. So yeah, so wehave the general emission tickets and that gets

(27:34):
the person into the zoo. They'llhave music, they'll get a pair of
solar glasses to protect their eyes, they'll have programming throughout the zoo, and
that's in Parking is not guaranteed forthat ticket, but you'll get a chance
to be at the zoo and possiblysee how the animals may react to the
eclipse. So that's the general emissionticket. And then the VIP ticket is

(27:56):
a package that you can purchase andthat gets six people into the zoo and
you are parking in the gated lotof the zoo, and that is guaranteed
parking. You're actually getting a spaceto park your car. You'll have access
getting at seven am that morning ifyou want to arrive at early. And
with that ticket that includes a brunchof Mimosa Bloody Mary brunch and then also

(28:19):
launch from Adam Cafe. I'm sorryAdam Catfish, So so I mean come
to enjoy either way, but wehope that everyone comes out, has a
day of science, has a dayof wonder at the zoo for the eclipse
from the eighth And make sure youget those tickets in advance because there is
a limited number available at Little RockZoo dot com. Joymatt Locke, director

(28:45):
of Marketing and Development at the LittleRock Zoo. Thank you so much for
calling in and having a big timewith us. And you know, I'm
super excited for a CLIPS day.I'm super excited to get out and see
those dragons too. I'm not gonnalie. That's gonna be so much fun.
Yeah, it is fun and Ithink I bet you'll come back more
than once. Oh, definitely definitelyJess from kissin ninety Sis. She's out

(29:07):
there like all the time with herfamily just seeing the dragons. So yeah,
definitely got to take the family forthat and everything that we've discussed today.
Little Rock Zoo dot com. Joy, thank you so much. Always
a pleasure. Thank you, DJA. I appreciate it so much. Thanks
