Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome back to Teach Me Something with pennydellas Hey, DJ
Protyle and I cannot believe we made it to the
end of season one.

Speaker 2 (00:10):
This epod epic. Now, what are we going to do today?

Speaker 1 (00:16):
Well besides look at each other as we're recording. No, honestly,
this is so cool. There's been laughter, there have been tears.

Speaker 2 (00:25):
Who cried you did?

Speaker 3 (00:27):
Oh yeah, that's when Sean Paul walked out with all
our food?

Speaker 1 (00:30):
One hundred percent. There have been endless scripts, endless emails,
right at least thirty two per episode.

Speaker 2 (00:40):
Oh yeah, I mean I put a lot of time into.

Speaker 1 (00:42):
You put so much effort into doing all of the editing.
We appreciate your pro so much. Podcast pro and.

Speaker 2 (00:47):
Full of podcasts Pro was created and we're here now.

Speaker 4 (00:51):
I love it.

Speaker 1 (00:51):
But for this episode, we thought we would do something
different and give you all a bonus episode to recap
some of our favorite clips. Yes from this season.

Speaker 3 (01:02):
This fourteen seasons, I'm sorry, fourteen episodes worth. Penny jump back.
People like fourteen seasons. You know, God bless you know. Hey,
if we're here for season fourteen, remember this.

Speaker 2 (01:12):
One to be a paycheck attached to that be a paycheck.

Speaker 3 (01:15):
But but yes, we're taking some of the best moments,
like she said, of the past fourteen episodes, and we're
gonna hit them with you right now to recap season one.

Speaker 2 (01:27):
Yes, welcome to the podcast.

Speaker 4 (01:29):
It was a gradual step. It wasn't really water polo.

Speaker 5 (01:32):
And then in the world, as you were saying it,
it's like water polo doing school, going through it, pop
sainting there, I'm struggling.

Speaker 4 (01:42):
Being being trying to trying to like be the man
at the house.

Speaker 1 (01:46):
Yeah, you were faced with many adversities, but it forced
you to pivot.

Speaker 4 (01:51):
Yeah. It made me.

Speaker 5 (01:53):
It made me, It made my skin TF it made
it made me kind of focus on what I wanted
to do. And when I saw music and it gave
me that much joy to do, I was like, that's
it for me.

Speaker 4 (02:07):
I'm going to do that.

Speaker 5 (02:08):
I was in college at the time when I started
to actually record, So what did They would consist of
going to school in the morning and then by like
two o'clock, I'm off, I'll go to the studios, chill
out there at about five, go back to go to training,
train from five thirty to about seven, and then go

(02:30):
back to the studio. Smelling like chlorine. Yeah, and just
be there till twelve at night and then start the
whole process over in the days. And I did it
all through college.

Speaker 4 (02:40):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (02:42):
The last year of college was when one of my
songs broke and you know, people was like, yo, who
is this kid?

Speaker 4 (02:48):
And so there was no turning back.

Speaker 5 (02:50):
However, swimming gave me the discipline, and college gave me
knowledge and discipline as well, and then put me on
to the path that I'm on today.

Speaker 3 (03:01):
So if the if the music career never took off
for you, what were you what were your plans?

Speaker 5 (03:06):
I'll probably be I mean my father did a lot
of crazy stuff when he came from prison.

Speaker 4 (03:10):
He went back to being a coach at the water pool,
so I probably would do that.

Speaker 5 (03:14):
I still am involved with them, and you know people
who play water pol in Jamaica and.

Speaker 1 (03:23):
That's really cool.

Speaker 4 (03:24):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (03:24):
We tried to coach and try to be there, trying
to get my kids into it.

Speaker 2 (03:27):
Yeah, oh you have to. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (03:30):
One thing you said is discipline, and that's some important
we talked about. And I think we've talked about this
in one of our other shows on our other podcast,
is is even if you know, like with my kids,
like we put them in all the sports specifically for that, right, Like,
even if they're not into that or that's not what
they want to do in life, the discipline that they
learn from being in a team and having you know,

(03:50):
to show up and do practice and do.

Speaker 2 (03:52):
Things like that and be the exactly and not cull
will further them in anything they decide to do in life. Sure,
I like the behind the.

Speaker 3 (04:00):
Scenes, and don't say anything that I'm going to say.

Speaker 1 (04:02):
Okay, okay, well, because you take my stories, bro, this
is maybe asked I should.

Speaker 3 (04:08):
Have asked you as No, my god, I just want
everybody know I like the behind the scenes stuff.

Speaker 2 (04:13):
I like the behind the scenes. We do.

Speaker 1 (04:15):
So we'll tell you how the episodes go. So we
ensure the guests. The guest comes in, we speak about
their journey, how it led to where they are today,
and we end each episode with one question. At Berkeley College,
we ask our students, in one word, describe what Berkeley
College means to you. So we flipped it on the
podcast and we ask every guest if you could articulate

(04:38):
in one word what you would like your legacy to be.
What word would that be? And we have not had
any repeats.

Speaker 3 (04:45):
Yet everybody said a different word, which is amazing.

Speaker 1 (04:47):
Yeah, the most the most powerful.

Speaker 3 (04:50):
One to me was Saul greatness.

Speaker 1 (04:53):
Greatness, greatness.

Speaker 2 (04:54):
Shot to Sean Paul.

Speaker 3 (04:55):
Yeah, shout out to Sean, one of our first guests
on the podcast.

Speaker 2 (04:57):
And we have a lot more now I'm pop cast pro.

Speaker 1 (05:01):
Yeah, your DJ, I managed DJs and I'll look at us.

Speaker 2 (05:04):
There we go.

Speaker 1 (05:05):
That's right. Shout out to some of the DJs that
are here today, and.

Speaker 2 (05:08):
The shout out to my DJs artists that are here today.

Speaker 4 (05:10):
That's right.

Speaker 1 (05:10):
Yes, we love it, but no, we have We have
a lot of friends and family and we can't wait
to share the platform with you all for you to
aspire to inspire this community. We have a special guest
with us today and I'm so proud to present this guest.
She is a scientist, a doctor, an activists going a

(05:37):
community representative. Okay, she is doctor, doctor Melissa Barraud.

Speaker 2 (05:45):
We got to ask. She's Dominican in there.

Speaker 6 (05:47):
I love the energy in here. Let me tell you.
The vibe is vibing.

Speaker 2 (05:53):
Vibe.

Speaker 6 (05:54):
But we love it.

Speaker 3 (05:55):
Shout out to your parents, by the way, yes, because
I always say it starts at home, right, and I
love how your parents shoe into education and saying you're
gonna go to college.

Speaker 2 (06:02):
You're going to go to school. That's how That's how
I know we're going to be with our kids. There's
none of this. You get to pick what you know,
this is what.

Speaker 4 (06:07):
You're gonna do.

Speaker 6 (06:09):
Yeah, but you're like that with your kids, right, Yeah,
that's what I said.

Speaker 2 (06:11):
We're gonna be like that.

Speaker 6 (06:13):
I tell my son all the time. My son is
my older son named Liam. What I mentioned today, I
tell him, why be ordinary when you could be extraordinary?
The only difference is a little extra Come on, Liam,
and he's like, why be ordinary? He understands the message, right,
it's the messages people and children absolutely, because kids don't
listen to what you say. They look at what you do.

(06:35):
That's where the impact is. We do as we.

Speaker 2 (06:37):
See, right, what's incredible, credible?

Speaker 6 (06:39):
Oh, thank you, thank you. I know my dad's proud.
He's like, you know, every time we go places, he's like,
that's my daughter.

Speaker 1 (06:45):
I'm surprised he's not here today because you take him
with you on tour.

Speaker 6 (06:47):
I know, he's my tour man. I mean, he's he's everything.

Speaker 2 (06:51):
We definitely would have him I know he's a start
asking questions, so tell us yes.

Speaker 6 (06:55):
And I really have to be honest. I have to
tell you. One my faith in God, because I have
unshakeable faith that he'll work it out. I let go
and I let God. And two, I have an amazing
husband at home who pushes me, who says do it.
And you know, the things that you don't have to
worry about are the things that are the most important, right,
Like I don't worry about who's picking up the kids,

(07:16):
Like right now, my kids are in a summer camp
and they need to be picked up at twelve, And
I know that he's going to do He's going to
do that, like I don't have to question that. And
so that's why it's important for you to focus on
who are you building your legacy with, right who's laying
those bricks with you. It's important because if the person
understands the message, then both of you are in sync
and you understand that you're doing it for the greater purpose.
So most definitely, he's been a major contributing factor. And

(07:39):
we're like non traditional, right because he's mostly at home
with the kids, and he's like, I love being here
with my kids. And I love that we are able
to balance that. So he does his work as a
media person on TV and he's you know, his timing
is very flexible, so he's able to give me the
hand when I'm away at Evans or doing things in

(08:00):
the community. And that one hundred percent is like the
best possible feeling because I feel like my kids get
the best of everything.

Speaker 2 (08:08):
Absolutely.

Speaker 6 (08:09):
Yeah, that's awesome, that's beautiful.

Speaker 2 (08:11):
That is that's what it's about. Really, I mean, it's
a partnership.

Speaker 1 (08:14):
Yeah, a relationship is a partnership.

Speaker 2 (08:16):
Absolute.

Speaker 3 (08:17):
There you go shout out to wife, I'm the husband.
I'm the one who's like everywhere doing picking.

Speaker 6 (08:21):
The kids up, and shout out to wife, I want
to shape and shift that number completely. And how do
we do that well by helping them and really telling
students and really being available and saying, you know what
you can do this. Let me show you how. I'm
going to open my treasure box or my hive and
I'm going to show you the honey, right so you
can get it done. And that's been you know, my

(08:41):
life's joy because when I, like I said when I started,
when I go places and I see people that I've
had in the classroom that say you impacted me, you
help me, you wrote a letter of recommendation for me,
you push me to this program, you connected me with
X y Z. It's amazing. So my trajectory is a professor,
I actually learned how to design curriculum, but curriculum that
is cifically based on the needs of the community or

(09:02):
the people that we're serving. And so shout out to
Melissa Rosario, who is the director of the SBDC at
within Patterson University. She came up to me last summer
and said, hey, I have an idea written down and
I have some ideas and topics of interest. I want
you to look at it. I want to start a
program for women. And so she had her idea of
she leads and I said, I'm on board one hundred percent.

(09:25):
Let's tie up the curriculum and I know some great
people who would be of great resource to the women
in that program. And it's all women's based program financed
by M and T. And these women get, you know,
fourteen weeks of personal, professional, and interrelational development and it's amazing.
When you see what comes out the final product, it's amazing.

(09:47):
It's so humbling. To see you know, someone who came
in and you know they started a bank account, or
they went and asked for dividends to continue their business path,
whatever it is, and you are a part of somebody
else's journey. I think there's no bigger, real more than that. Honestly,
we're just in awe.

Speaker 1 (10:04):
Oh yeah, because pros you know, learning this and I
just I see everything that she does, and it's so
important for you as a beginning professional or beginning in
your academic career and to see people that you resonate.

Speaker 6 (10:21):
With, that look like you, that feel like you, that.

Speaker 1 (10:23):
Speak like you, and coming into the higher education space
when you perhaps have not had a guide right, or
do not have experience with financial literacy, or do not
have experience with those academic levels. If you come from
a place of first generation American or you migrated here,
you may not know how the system works and first

(10:46):
hand experience. Our professors really sit with you and they
walk with you, and it's a testament to them as people.
And Melissa's here today as who you are as a person,
because you go above and beyond to ensure that that
student or entrepreneur is going to make it to that goal.
Whatever that end goal.

Speaker 4 (11:08):
Maybe.

Speaker 6 (11:08):
So there's health and wellness, right, and we often bunch
health and wellness together because you can't have one without
the other. Yeah, right, it's living healthy, it's being you know,
being aware of your environment, your intelligence, your society, being
aware of who you are as a person, even your spiritualness, right,
because a lot of times we put spirituality in a
box and we don't realize that box is what's going
to give you the answer to all of the unanswered questions.

(11:31):
And it's wellness. And what is wellness compared to health? Well,
you can be healthy, but you cannot be well. And
wellness is a deliberate you're deliberately choosing things to promote
a healthier lifestyle. So it's a deliberate choice to you know,
select certain people, be in certain environments, look at certain
things that will benefit you for the good. And so

(11:54):
I would almost challenge and say that you know people
that have come to Berkeley and really taken full advantage
of all that we offer and the advantages as you know,
Student Development and all of the other organizations that are
part of the umbrella that is perth Resourcess. It becomes
a lifestyle because you get used to. You know, you
want to pursue wellness, and so you're deliberately chasing a

(12:16):
lifestyle that will stay with you long gone before you're
you're done with the school, the program, and you're graduated
and you've accomplished wherever it is that life is taking you. So,
I mean, it's it's really you know, it's really a
domino effect. If you will, it really is. Let's keep
a Caribbe domino effect.

Speaker 2 (12:36):
Yeah, it's just awesome just sitting in here.

Speaker 3 (12:39):
I love to I love to hear your story and
now I see where it's coming from and the people
who've helped, you know, mold and shape you into the
person you are.

Speaker 1 (12:47):
And he looks like like a proud Dave.

Speaker 3 (12:51):
Well, you know, it's funny because I'm sitting on the
outside as someone who didn't get a chance, right, not
for any reason, to go to college or anything. Yeahs
and talk about it all the time because we also
want to set that tone for our children, because because
school and college and direction is something that we don't
play with in our household.

Speaker 4 (13:09):
Right.

Speaker 3 (13:09):
So I was also just blessed enough to kind of
like fall into my career. I was I've been doing
this since high school.

Speaker 2 (13:16):
I was on radio.

Speaker 6 (13:16):
You didn't fall into your career. I want to challenge why.

Speaker 3 (13:18):
I worked my way into it. Yes, yes, I worked
for where I'm at today from day from the bottom
up right. So, uh, the opportunity for me was just
kind of there and I took it and it. But
hearing these stories is just amazing. You know, we all
have different stories. It gets where we're at, and you
help so many people get to where they're at. And

(13:39):
for the new kids coming in seeing something like this episode,
I'm sure hopefully it catches the eyes of some new
students or people who are even thinking about going to
Berkeley or pursuing the career.

Speaker 2 (13:49):
Hopefully this will make it a little easier for them
and get them more excited about it.

Speaker 6 (13:53):
Absolutely, and I'm always available to help anyone. Like literally,
Penny has called me yeah all the time, twelve in
the I don't know, one in the morning, Hey, I
have a kid and you need to hope an internship whatever.
We literally take it personal.

Speaker 1 (14:07):
So we ended every episode this season by asking in
one word.

Speaker 3 (14:12):
Which by the way, was like the most important part
of our I loved it. Of each and every episode,
I loved it.

Speaker 2 (14:17):
I loved it.

Speaker 1 (14:18):
So, in one word, describe what your legacy would be.
And we received so many interesting responses.

Speaker 3 (14:25):
And I think only two people, which happen to be
both a work here at KTU, right or for I'm
sorry for iHeart said the same word, but life, yeah, love,
which you can't get enough of that, right right? Everyone
else pretty much had a different word, and we're about
to show you them.

Speaker 2 (14:42):
I love that.

Speaker 1 (14:42):
So we hope that you continue to be inspired during
our break as much as we have so here they are.
We do something at Berkeley College that we say, describe
Berkeley College in one word with our students. So in
one word, if you could describe what your legacy would
be be, what you wanted to exemplify, what would.

Speaker 5 (15:02):
That be a lot of times when people speak to me,
it just text me or watch up. I just answer
them greatness, because it's all great greatness. It's all great.
I mean, it's it's you know, every step, every breath
that you take you should give thanks for and it's
all greatness, every step of it. Because I wouldn't do
nothing different, you know, I wouldn't do anything different. Back

(15:25):
in the past. I learned what I learned at different
stages that helped me to be who I am today
and who I am now, and so for me, it's
all greatness.

Speaker 6 (15:33):
In one word, my legacy is energy.

Speaker 1 (15:40):
That is so suiting for you.

Speaker 6 (15:41):
I know energy. I describe myself as an energetic, effervescent person.
This is the SAT word for the day. And I
like to do that because energy is contagious. And so
if you keep a positive energy and an upswing energy
and you're happy about what you do, guess what, It
attracts people to you. It attracts young people to you.

(16:02):
It makes them want to know what it is that
you're doing. And I think I want to always be
that person that when my students call me, they know
they feel reassured I hold their hand through processes and
that I do it with a spirit of love and
not judgment. And I think that's so important oftentimes, Like
do you remember what it was like in the classroom
when you had a question? You don't want to raise

(16:23):
your hand. You're like they're gonna laugh at me, Oh
my goodness, am I gonna? And I want to make
everybody feel like my energy begets a safe space. And
I think it's important that your educational journey just start
with a safe space. You need to be safe in
knowing that the person in front of you cares. So
I think I want my legacy to be energy, yeah,

(16:43):
bib yeah, the rage, authenticity.

Speaker 7 (16:48):
No, I just I want people to feel good. There
is so much negativity. I feel like a lot of
what we scroll and doom scroll it just doesn't make
us us feel one hundred percent. And there could be
so many topics that we could talk about. But I
want your heart to feel better. I want your day
whatever it is. People they're driving from jobs they don't like,
or they're driving from toxic home situations. You don't know,

(17:10):
people have going on, and so I want whatever time
that I have with someone just to make them feel
happy and special and know that there is so much
love that they can get and give no matter what.

Speaker 6 (17:22):
So I hope that they just they feel love.

Speaker 3 (17:26):
Love.

Speaker 4 (17:27):
That's beautiful, that's great, unforgettable.

Speaker 1 (17:32):
We haven't had that, No words have been repeated.

Speaker 8 (17:35):
Yeah, yeah, because I can promise you not to like
choot my own horn or whatever, but I can probably
step back on that campus and everyone would just be like,
oh my gosh, oh my gosh. I can be recognized
and not just because you know of just what I'm
doing in the entertainment industry, but because of the impact

(17:56):
that I had touched on those children's lives. Remember sometimes
like the kids would come into student development and just
like you've turned my day around.

Speaker 2 (18:04):
That's awesome.

Speaker 8 (18:06):
And so yeah, I think I think that would have
been with my word, My legacy was unforgettable true.

Speaker 9 (18:13):
I mean, I just say that because you know, as
a and again I'm not a huge astrology person, but
I'm a Sagittarian, and if you know any Sagittarians, you'll
know that one of the things that most important, that's
most important to us is just being true to who
we are. And and so alexis you'r Sagittarius, right, and

(18:34):
that like right, and so so for me, whatever I'm doing,
it's got to be true to who I am. I
can't like fake the funk like that. I'm you know,
not good when it comes to fake the faking the funk.
And so when I'm gone and it all is said
and done, I want, you know, one of the things
I want people to say about me is she stayed
true to who she was, you know, And so I'd

(18:57):
say true.

Speaker 10 (18:59):
The word that comes to line is inspirational.

Speaker 1 (19:04):
I like that.

Speaker 10 (19:04):
I want to inspire others to or at least be
a voice for those who feel they can't speak. But
always be intentional with what you do and say. There's
so many artists out there that have such a huge
platform and influence in the world, and I feel like
they use it to degrade or to promote anything else
than self confidence or love or unity and so inspire. Yeah,

(19:31):
I want to inspire people.

Speaker 6 (19:33):
I love that.

Speaker 4 (19:34):
I love it.

Speaker 1 (19:35):
Thanks Alex, Yes, are you satisfied with the end segment
of this episode? I want to ensure that you're happy.
If you're happy, I'm happy.

Speaker 2 (19:50):
Pancakes. I love it.

Speaker 6 (19:55):
You're the first foodie i've before pancakes.

Speaker 2 (20:00):
Is there a reason I love pancakes? Pancakes?

Speaker 1 (20:06):
This is going to be the social media Segmentcakes. You
thought it was an acronym for something. That's what I
was waiting for.

Speaker 6 (20:12):
I was going to.

Speaker 11 (20:13):
Say something deep like chance from a shit and pankekes
pancakes as many layers, you know, sometimes just sometimes this
is where, like the cut, the commercial music comes in.

Speaker 2 (20:32):
But roll with me.

Speaker 1 (20:33):
I know, I want to see the metaphor right of
the pancakes and there's something for everyone, with something for
every flavors, different layers, different layers. You can stack them
as high as you want, or bring it hot in.

Speaker 6 (20:44):
The middle, hot and kids, crispy on they Okay.

Speaker 2 (20:49):
I'm really trying to figure this.

Speaker 1 (20:50):
Pancakes, she's really trying to bring it in and I
don't know what happened was the train ride was like
pancakes and coffee.

Speaker 2 (20:57):
Thinking about what she's about to have right now, and
she walks out of here.

Speaker 6 (20:59):
Yes, gosh, I gotta think about that.

Speaker 1 (21:01):
This is our favorite part of them.

Speaker 2 (21:03):
Does everybody react this way? This is difficult, of course,
loved loved.

Ruthie's Table 4

Ruthie's Table 4

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.
