Speaker 1 (00:02):
Two lifelong Houston sports guys named Adham talking your teams.
Adam Clinton and Adam Wexler are the A Team A.

Speaker 2 (00:18):
It is a Monday edition of the A Team Sports
Talk seven to ninety. Fresh off another spring training victory
for your Houston Astros. We are your home of Astros Baseball.
Wex over there, ac right here, fresh off the weekend.
Hope you had a good one and hope that, uh well,
despite what the Rockets did on Saturday night, you were

(00:39):
able to keep a positive attitude.

Speaker 3 (00:40):
I wasn't.

Speaker 2 (00:41):
I was very upset after that game on Saturday, probably
an inordinate amount of strife in my internal self after
the way they lost again to the Sacramento Kings. But
good news, They've got the first of a back to
back tonight against the Oklahoma City Thunder and then they'll
turn right around and play at Indiana. So the gift
that keeps on giving is your NBA schedule. By the way,

(01:03):
I look this up since it's always a talking point
on the show, since I refuse to let it go.
I think this is the second to last one. They
have another one next month, set of back to backs,
and then that's they're done.

Speaker 3 (01:13):
There's three more, including this one that begins there's three more,
so two after this. When's the other one the end
of this month? Two in March, I believe. I don't
think they have one in April. I feel like they had
like ten last month. In February they've already had fourteen.
There's only three left. There's still five weeks of basketball left.
So yes, most of them were on the other side
of things. March third and fourth. Tonight and tomorrow, they've

(01:34):
got a back to back. The fourteenth and fifteenth, they
will play two games without travel when Dallas and Chicago visit,
and the final back to back will be at the
end of the month. When they're out west. They will
go play at Phoenix after arriving from Utah the day before,
and then the very next night they will play the
first of their two remaining games against the LA Lakers.
All right, well good, no second place in the West

(01:57):
LA Lakers.

Speaker 2 (01:58):
Yes, yes, because even when the San Antonio Spurs were
doing the Rockets a solid and beating the Grizzlies in
Memphis the other night, they couldn't take advantage of it,
because apparently DeMar Derozen and company are just too good to.

Speaker 3 (02:10):
Beat three for three. I don't know how much more
information you need. I mean, it's time is better than
the Rockets. They're not a better overall team against the
rest of the league, but they are when they play
each other. I don't even think that's the case. I
think the rocket is the case. The Rockets can't stop
their offense. The Rockets cannot slow down the Kings. Every
game they've played this year, with Fox, without Fox, with Levine,

(02:30):
without Levine, they can't stop them. I don't look at
it that way at all. I mean, it's not like
like the the Kings come in and just like go bombs.
Wait now, they did have a well, it's not about
three point shooting. It's just they literally can't keep them
from scoring.

Speaker 2 (02:47):
Actually it was more about two point shooting the other night.
But the Rockets like being down sixteen in the first quarter.
That's really not really lending itself to my side of
the argument here. It's more like, oh, okay, I just
feel like every time the Kings come into town, the
Rockets think that James Harden still plays for them, and
it's ten years ago, and they're just gonna roll over
and die like they always did.

Speaker 3 (03:06):
Whether it was here or roll over. They came back
about five times. They just couldn't.

Speaker 2 (03:09):
Over talking about the Kings rolling over. They like it
was an automatic dub every single time they would play
the Sacramento Kings, whether it was here or in Sacramento
during the hardened era, because he would give them like
forty minimum every single time. And those days are just
long gone. They're in the rearview mirror. And like you said,
it doesn't matter.

Speaker 3 (03:26):
They're a playoff team. Yes, they're a playoff team. They're
gonna go very far.

Speaker 2 (03:31):
Actually, you know what, it might be a good bet
who goes further after the first round between these two teams.

Speaker 3 (03:37):
Well, they're gonna have to play their way into the
playoffs because it's very pretty unlikely they're gonna catch I
guess I shouldn't say they can't catch the Clippers, but
I wouldn't bet on it. There's one spot. Honestly, the
West is very simple while being super complicated. The Thunder
are going to clinch the number one seed in a
couple weeks with lots of games left to play, maybe

(03:57):
as many as ten or eleven. Shake we won't play
for like two weeks as in before the final month
of the season begins, they will have clinched the number
one seed. They'll still potentially be playing for the overall
number one seed if they care. And then you have
the next four teams Lakers, Nuggets, Grizzlies, Rockets, And it's
important because it's two through five. Five doesn't have home

(04:18):
court advantage. Two and three avoid the thunder until further
in the playoffs. These spots probably carry some weight for
those four teams as they play down the stretch, and
you know how hard are we going to push for that?
And then there's six through ten, and I do not
include the Phoenix Suns. I will probably eliminate them from
the graphic you will see throughout the simulcast portion of

(04:38):
our shows sometime pretty soon. But six through ten is
obviously incredibly important because six doesn't have to play in
the play in tournament when they get to the end
of the season, and the Clippers now no longer have
much of a lead over the Kings, the MAVs, the Warriors,
and the Wolves. So there's three sets of teams. One
set includes only one team, and then there's two through

(04:59):
five and they're six per cent. I think those groups
are done. I'm hoping the team in five Houston can
comply and agree, yes, we're not falling past five with
twenty games twenty two games left and a five game
lead and the tiebreaker over the team that's closest to you.
I think the Rockets can hang on despite who they

(05:19):
might not be using tonight, because it's about the longest
list of injured players the Rockets have had in quite
some time. They just played Saturday, they pretty much had
everybody well, they might not have many players. They decided
to have all three well now two again two way

(05:40):
players with the team. They brought back Dante and Jack McVeigh,
who will be available tonight should they be needed. Nate
Williams is no longer two way player. He signed a
multi contract although this year the remainder of this year
is the only year that's guaranteed, but took him off
the two way deal. It meant they could now no
longer list Cody Zeller on their injured list. Now he's

(06:00):
literally not on the team. It used to say not
with the team, Now it won't say anything because he's
not on the team as they let him go. That trade,
as you know, is made simply to add draft assets.
And was still a very good one for rafel Stone.
But Fred's out thanks to stepping on a referee's foot
and gutting it out on Saturday night, probably an unwise move,

(06:20):
but not going to play tonight Easan, Adams, Brooks, Thompson,
Schng Goon, all with varying degrees of issues. And it
is the front side of a back to backs who
consider they'll be in Indiana tomorrow, so some combination of
those players, those five questionable players probably not available tonight.
We won't know that for probably about two hours.

Speaker 2 (06:42):
And like you mentioned the Lakers one again, there's sixth straight.
I don't think that.

Speaker 3 (06:47):
Norman Powell being in the game beyond the nine minutes
that he played after leaving with an injury would have
probably made a difference. Although well, Kawhi Leonard scored thirty
three points and it just didn't matter. James Harden was
like a minus eighteen. It was just the other team
has the two best players. That's what the Lakers will
have a lot of nights. And even against a good

(07:09):
Clippers team, better than five hundred, good defensive team, the
two best players on the court and there's only ten
of them, they're wearing the Lakers colors.

Speaker 2 (07:17):
They only manage nineteen points in the fourth quarter of
the Lakers, but it's.

Speaker 3 (07:20):
What closed the gap. They had the lead pretty much
throughout and made it a closer margin at the end.

Speaker 2 (07:25):
Yeah, it's it's disgusting because until I'm proven otherwise, I'm
probably gonna sound stupid saying they just don't.

Speaker 3 (07:33):
Look I'm just not.

Speaker 2 (07:35):
I don't worry about the Lakers doing anything, making any
sort of noise, anything like that, because in the postseason,
I think it's gonna change.

Speaker 3 (07:40):
But I mean, now it's just a matter of how
do you grade out your comment. I mean, they're seeded
to reach the conference finals. They're the number two seed.
That's where they ought to be if you believe that
everyone gave what was necessary in the season. Because I
don't necessarily believe in all that anymore. It's pretty clear
that teams aren't putting everything they in, everything they have
into the eighty two game regular seeds. See the Boston Celtics, Yeah,

(08:03):
they don't at this point. They they're playing to be healthy.
They're playing to Hey can Krista, how do we do
to get Chris SAPs back? How do we make sure
Drew Holliday's good. That's all they care about. You know,
the Lakers are probably going to play to that at
some point. It might cost them a seed because they
probably don't care. You know, if Lebron James needs some
days off in April, if Luca needs some days, they'll
they'll give it to them, even if the number two, three,

(08:23):
four seeds is on the line for them. But I
don't think anybody in the West is really a championship
contender because I don't think anybody in the West is
going to beat Oklahoma City, so they're the contender. But
your that's being awfully dismissive of you know, the two, three, four,
five seeds, which usually you wouldn't do in any given year. Yeah,
but I mean, if you told me you can have

(08:45):
twenty eight teams and I'll take two teams, I'll take Boston,
I'll take Oklahoma City. You have the field. Now, who's money?
Who wants to give me their money to bet on
my two teams or who wants to give your money
to a seed to bet on any of the twenty
eight other teams. Everybody would be giving me their money.
It's overwhelming. The two most likely champions one from each conference,

(09:06):
which plenty of disrespect indicated to the Calves. Well, I mean,
even though they played very very well in telling the Celtics, hey,
it's forty eight minutes. They're playing forty eight minutes in
NBA games this year. I don't know if you knew
that or not, as they ran the Calves off the
court on Friday night, only to see the Calves come
all the way back and beat them.

Speaker 2 (09:26):
And don't forget all the trash talk they did before
that happened. The thing is, I want to say that
and I want to agree with you, especially in the
sense of well, I do agree with you in the
sense of the Celtics because they're the defending champs and
they didn't beat the Thunder last year to win that championship.
That's where I I mean. I again, just like my
comment about the Lakers, until they do it, I just

(09:48):
don't believe in them, even though they've given me no.

Speaker 3 (09:50):
Reason not to.

Speaker 2 (09:52):
They're until who does it? The Thunder, until they won
a title? Well, yeah, or just get to the finals.
How about that.

Speaker 3 (09:58):
Well, they've been at top seed the last two seasons,
and they've the last one season, well not eight not
then to make the playoffs last two years ago. Last
year is our first trip to the playoffs? Did they
make the did they make the postseason the year before? No?

Speaker 2 (10:11):
I guess I'm thinking that they've had two years of
this is their last year there were awesome. It is
their second year of dominance, right, and.

Speaker 3 (10:17):
They finished tied for the best record, had the number
one hit. He was there. Oh yeah, well this is
his fifth year there. There's going to be a second
fifth year is their best player, and this is going
to be a second trip to the playoffs. But they
also had a you know, a very good fifty seven
win team with that's a sixty nine and a half
winning percentage six to ninety five. It's really good. Oh,
this year they're at eight to seventeen. They're light years

(10:38):
better than the number one seeded thunder were a year ago.

Speaker 2 (10:41):
And did them and did the majority of this without
Chet Holmgren in their lineup, yep, which is terrifying.

Speaker 3 (10:48):
He'll be there tonight.

Speaker 4 (10:49):
Yay.

Speaker 3 (10:50):
Yeah, it's it's not going to be. I mean, I
hate to there'll a chance the Rockets will play this
back to back. From a personnel stand point, A little
bit more obvious than others. Unfortunately, Indiana's playing great basketball
and they're just like Houston in that battle for four
and five, or they're also not playing tonight like the
Rockets are. Right, but it's not like, well, we'll give

(11:12):
this one away and we'll go take tomorrow. I don't
think there's any taking for either of these two road games.
But they might utilize their personnel differently than they have
been in these back to backs. It's almost every single
time Tari's been a go in the first game and
then anogo in the second game. We'll see how they
play it.

Speaker 2 (11:31):
Yeah, I mean, if you're I don't know if you
want to call it relinquishing or surrendering or whatever.

Speaker 3 (11:37):
Tonight's game, it's flagging it, don't I mean it's maybe
it's the Nate Williams game. I'll tell you what. It's
the Cam went More game after I found out to
be the Reed Shepherd game. No, all I can do
not to post the numbers that I was looking up today.

Speaker 2 (11:52):
I go ahead, he's the number one, he was the
number three pick in the draft. It's not out of
line to do something like that. Well, they're bad, I
know they are. It's it's looking like a.

Speaker 3 (12:03):
Term for bad. That's like to the extreme. It's when
you use the term the worst that he is, Like,
I know who reached Shepherd's favorite player in the NBA
is it's the only player in the NBA that's worse
than him at shooting. There's only one that's his favorite player.
That was. That was probably how I would have worded
it if it were the meanest tweet ever. But I'm

(12:25):
not gonna who is not gonna type one of those
you've never heard of it? Well, I still want to
know the name. Nope, you can't have it. I'll find out.
You can't stop me. All right, we will continue to
cam Smith trained people. Yeah, let's hype this guy off.
Did you see I doubt it? Did you hear yeah?

Speaker 5 (12:40):
You did?

Speaker 3 (12:41):
The bases loaded, triple he head off a guy who's
barely pitched above single A. Did you hear it today?
Hop on the hype train. Let's do it cam Smith
every day with the big club starting March twenty seven.
It be Joseel tuob Is and left fold, but Cam
Smith is over there on right field or third base,

(13:01):
or he's the DH because yourdn's gonna go to first
because we've got to get Cam in the lineup. Let's
get people on board this dik In Park hype train
Kyle who exactly we will discuss a little bit of that.
The NFL's gathering of talent took place and completed Sunday,
the NFL's scouting Combine. That means in earnest we start

(13:24):
mocking up the NFL mock drafts post combine and through
the opening of the NFL Draft coming up on in
late April. We cannot wait to bring, as requested by AC,
a brand new parody song to the party here on
the A Team, all apart of day one of the week,
here on the eighteam.

Speaker 4 (13:46):
The eighteen on Sports Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 1 (13:50):
Back to Adam Clinton, had Adam Wexler the eighteen.

Speaker 4 (13:54):
On Sports Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 6 (14:02):
Now Camp Smith with the basis full two outs, she
a one to two count on Smith, pitch home swung
on hit high in the air, deep to center field,
all the way back pitcher near the wall that bolls
off the top of the wall.

Speaker 7 (14:17):
What run scores, two run scores? There comes to go
ahead run hillscore. Camp Smith players the bases with a
triple off the top of the Wall in center and
the Astros lead this game four to three.

Speaker 3 (14:29):
That is a strong man, camp Smith.

Speaker 2 (14:35):
How long I'm gonna ask you every day until he's
on the major league roster.

Speaker 3 (14:39):
How long do we have to wait? I want to
have the answer for you on any of those days.
Can you just do it like a guess? Can you
just give me a thirty seven? I'll tell you what
he is going to make.

Speaker 2 (14:54):
If the Astros are like sluggish out of the gate,
it's gonna be so much more excursion.

Speaker 3 (14:59):
As long as they can convince the Mets, Giants twins,
and I don't know who they play in their fourth series,
as long as they can convince them that their best
bet on getting off to a good start this year
is to bring up non qualified not yet ready for
the majors, maybe never ready for the majors pitching now,
cam Smith has had some opportunities against better pitching. But

(15:21):
this is the good and bad of spring training baseball.
He came in as a pinch runner, he got one
at bat, came late in the game. Most of the
major league quality pitchers aren't pitching any seventh, eighth, ninth,
maybe even sixth innings of spring training games. And that
was certainly the case today when the Woodlands own you

(15:43):
have h product and Lamar University product served up that
four hundred and twelve foot one hundred and five point
five mile an hour exit velosity triple to Cam Smith.
His name is Josh Ecknes. I guess I could do
the man JD. JD. Ecknes middle names Dean. I guess
I could do him a solid and mention that he,

(16:04):
of the four innings above single A, serve that pitch
up to Cam Smith. There may not be any pitches
in the major league career for Josh Eknes. I don't
know that yet. We'll find out, but I assume Cam
Smith will hit his first ever major league home run
against a major league pitcher, considering it'll be in a

(16:25):
major league game. Today's home run may or may not
have come against a major league pitcher. I've ied a
guess I would guess No, I guess it's off a
pitcher he saw last year when he also was playing
single A for the most part baseball, and we'll see
again this year. He'll never play single A baseball again.
That's true. Okay, what about the picture. I don't know

(16:45):
where the Marlins plan on starting Josh Eknes in his
second full season of major league or professional baseball. I mean,
he's been a hammerhead, he's been a skycarp, he's been
a blue wahoo. Not sure what he will be this year.
In the case of Cam Smith, there's still I mean,
as much as I want people tooting their horns, jumping

(17:07):
on board and filling up the engine with Cole, there's
a reasonable chance Cam Smith's first at bat is as
a corpus Christy hook. Why wouldn't it be. It could be.
I'm not saying it will be, but he certainly doesn't
have much experience above single a baseball. It probably will

(17:28):
be because Joe Aspatta and Dana Brown and both of
their hitting coaches at the major league level, and most
everybody else in the organization, they're getting to see him
every day. This is the point of clearly, you would
bring a prospect of this caliber to major league camp
for a reason. But they're also getting to see him
playing games and play some of his positions third baseman mostly,

(17:49):
and I think that's what he'll continue to play a
lot of during the season. But they're getting a chance
to really see him. I don't think they're gonna want
to sit. I wonder if he can hit single A
pitching this year. They're watching him tell them loudly, yeah
I can, so let's see what other pitching I can hit.
That's why it benefits them to start him pretty much
every opportunity they can. You can't start him every day

(18:11):
because your regulars still need to play. Altuve, Alvarez, Pegna
among others, all in the lineup today for the Astros,
He's OK. Perettis is probably your opening day third baseman.
He's going to continue to need to play. Playing East
OK Perettis in the sixth, seventh, eighth, nine, and evening
of spring training games. There's no purpose. You don't play
your regulars late. You don't bring them in late in

(18:31):
spring training games unless you're way late in spring training
and just trying to get as many at bats as possible.
It's different for cam Smith. He's not always going to
see the elite, elite pitching in spring training as the
major league pitchers are working on things. But there's nothing
wrong with what he's doing. I want people to be
on the hype train. I just want them to recognize

(18:51):
he'll be on the hype train instead. Of at Minute
May Park. When the season begins, he will still be
on it. He'll be you know, make you excited about
where that train's next stop will be. And eventually it
will stop at Minute May Park. It's just probably not
going to be on March twenty seventh.

Speaker 2 (19:07):
All Right, we have some rockets conversation, but I also
have to ask you a very important question, as it
pertains to both camp Smith and Hunter Brown. When we
come back to finish up the three o'clock hour. We'll
do that next here on the eighteen.

Speaker 1 (19:20):
The A team on Sports Talk seven ninety back to
Adam Clinton and Adam Wexler.

Speaker 4 (19:28):
Now here's Adam.

Speaker 1 (19:30):
No, no, the other Adam on second took no Adam,
you take it?

Speaker 4 (19:34):
No, no, no, no, Adam. Wait wait Adam. Guys, guys,
the A team.

Speaker 2 (19:43):
So, an unnamed member of the staff here at Sportstox
seven ninety, I'll protect the innocent, had mentioned wanting to
get a hold of a Cam Smith jersey, but obviously
having to wait to see what his number would be
on the major league roster. That's something that would potentially

(20:05):
not be known right up until the first day. Correct, Yes, okay,
So having said that, if I were to go through
with my plan purchasing at least a new jersey or
two for this upcoming season, since I just purged my closet,
you know, with all the former Astros that I had
to cast aside Tucker Ferlander, Bregman, amongst others. Going with

(20:30):
the Hunter Brown first know his number, his name on
the back of the jersey will be back to a
normal size here in twenty twenty five.

Speaker 3 (20:39):
Yeah, that can be worn in the future. If they
had another guy named Brown, I get it. Smart only
if he's wearing number fifty eight. Yeah maybe. I mean
they've had a guy named Smith. He wore thirty eight.
You know it's available, so yeah.

Speaker 2 (20:52):
But if the Astros were really paying attention to that
sort of thing in actuality instead of this imaginary like
we are doing right now, Yeah, they would absolutely not
pick that number because then they would sell more jerseys otherwise.

Speaker 3 (21:04):
Do you think it's gonna be is this exercise in
guessing Cam Smith's number? No, No, that would have been fun.

Speaker 2 (21:10):
But I was just you know, don't go out and
create one, for example, which you can do until you
know it. Pick up your hundred Browns of the world
or whatever, and That's the other question I had. When's
the what's the absolute longest eligibility for him to be
a Houston Astra before he too leaves the franchise.

Speaker 3 (21:29):
If indeed that's what happens, you got all of his
control when he makes his debut, which I assume will
be in the very near future. No, I'm talking about Brown.
How long is hit Well, you got four more years
of control, if I'm not mistaken. Okay, that's a four
year investment in a Jersey. If you were to buy
a Hunter Brown one right now. I mean you could
have bought a jose Al Tuove Jersey and then the
early one of them, you would have had a lot

(21:51):
more than Well, it's not under club control anymore. So
that's that I already have those that I'm saying. It's not.
It's not only under club control with which these players
remain in uniform.

Speaker 2 (22:02):
No, I know, I know, And look, maybe they'll surprise
us and Hunter Brown will be a long time astro.

Speaker 3 (22:08):
I mean, Hunter Brown's making nothing right now. What if
you offered him one hundred million dollars, I would they might.
That's what they did with with Alex Bregman the first
time around. It's what they did with Jordan Alvarez, It's
what they did with Christian Javier at a lower figure

(22:28):
three million.

Speaker 2 (22:29):
Those guys hadn't hired high falutin agents when those deals
were signed.

Speaker 3 (22:33):
I mean you can tell them to say no first
free agency a little bit earlier. No, he wasn't. But
they also won't make they will be guaranteed to make
the money that's on the contract versus. Go have a
good year and then we'll go we'll avoid arbitration, and
then go have a good year, and then we'll avoid
arbitration again. Then go have a good year. Then we'll
avoid arbitration again. Then after you have another good year,

(22:57):
you know, you can test the market if we have
not signed you to a long term or you can
just take one hundred million dollars today.

Speaker 2 (23:01):
Then after you have a really good start to the year,
and then you get a bone bruise and it turns
into a break, but we don't tell anybody that, and
then we don't want to lose you to free agency
the following year, we'll just trade you to the Cubs.
Because that's exactly the scenario that you just laid out
with Kyle Tucker.

Speaker 3 (23:16):
Well Kyle Tucker's put together a bunch of good years
but did not sign a contract before then went to
the arbitration eligible off season every year. At times he's well,
just because he had to, it's because that's there was
no long term agreement ever, and there was no Once
you get to that point, it's it's not good for
anybody if you really have to go through the process,

(23:36):
as you said, But he'll go into this year with
the Cubs making less than Jose Altuve, less than Christian Walker,
less than Josh Hader, less than from ber Valdez, and
less than Lance mccullor's junior. He will be technically making
a little bit more than Jordon, a couple million more.
And that's Jordon under a long term deal and not

(23:58):
quite as far along in the process. Yeah, they stole Jordon,
that's nice, but again he decided that for his family
and what he wanted and where things were. You want
to give me one hundred million dollars where I'm protected
from everything, I'll take it. Imagine Jordon in the Dodgers
lineup right now, where would he bet? No? No players,

(24:18):
I don't know. All right, we will take a quick
time out. We'll come right back.

Speaker 2 (24:22):
We'll turn on the TV cameras when we do four
o'clock hour straight ahead.

Speaker 1 (25:02):
Two lifelong Houston sports guys named Adam Talking Your Teams series,
Adam Clinton and Adam Wexler are the A Team A.

Speaker 2 (25:18):
It's a Monday edition of the A Team Sports Talk
seven to ninety second hour of the show, first full
hour after Astros and Marlins Spring training Madness concluded earlier
here on Sports Talk seven ninety. RBI triple from Cam Smith,
who I Baseball lusted after for a lot of the

(25:39):
first hour that we were on. It is wex and
Ac with you after a weekend saw the Rockets lose
yet again to the Kings. They are O for Kings
this season. They've got the Oklahoma City Thunder tonight, first
night of a back to back. They'll go to Indiana tomorrow,
They'll play New Orleans on Thursday. In this three game
Roady will be done, but not the way you wanted

(26:00):
to finish that three game homestand could have swept it,
could have gone into tonight's matchup with the Thunder with
momentum instead. Fred van Vliet got hurt like in the
first thirty seconds of the game by stepping on an
officials foot. It's a separate injury from the one that
kept him out for exactly a month, and now he's
out tonight against the team with the best record in
the Western Conference. So that's not a really great way

(26:23):
to go into a matchup like that tonight. But as
Wex mentioned in the first hour, it's time. It's that
time of year. The combine is now over, so everybody
is officially on the clock right now. Technically, Wex it's
the Tennessee Titans, but they should probably trade out of
that pick.

Speaker 3 (26:41):
Right ah. Well, again, you gotta find somebody who wants
to go up there. I think that would be probably
a very smart move for them to trade out. The
only way you trade out if someone says, we cannot
move forward unless Abdul Carter is on our team. We
cannot play the twenty twenty five season and be on
unless we get cam Ward in house. Hey man, this
season is a total waste of our time, and so

(27:02):
is our franchise unless we trade up for Quinn yours
at number one overall. Whoa I mean, if there's a
team out there that wants to do that, then yes,
I would think whatever you can get in return, presumably
it's from a team that's quarterback starved and very high
in the draft, so you only bump back a couple
of spots and then you can come back out of
it and say, man, we got the guy we wanted. Anyway,

(27:24):
we got them at a rate that better fits our
plan of progress. Titans aren't going to draft anybody in
this draft and compete for Division crown next year, but
they'll be drawing two draft players in this draft that
allow them to compete for a Vision championship in the
near future. And well, I'm pretty sure a one year
turnaround isn't happening for the Titans. I think everybody's already

(27:46):
showing you pretty quickly two years. Coaches can tell you
that the ones that are getting fired after a very
short period of time. I think there's a belief that
a GM can go out there with cap space, with
draft capital, and with the right quarterback. Yes, you can
compete very very coquol quickly. The Texans and Commanders showed
that you can compete immediately provided you draft the right quarterback.

(28:06):
The Commanders with Daniels for one year, the Texans with
Stroud for two years haven't even missed the playoffs since
taking their quarterback of the future at the top of
the draft. Not one. I'm not sure that there's a
quarterback in this draft that can do that. I don't
think this is quite as bad as all right, send
in Kenny Pickett's name, We'll take him, like the Steelers

(28:28):
did a couple of years ago with the twentieth pick
in the draft to grab a quarterback. Combine complete. Those
two quarterbacks are two quarterbacks, I should say together. Shudeur, Sanders,
and cam Ward did not participate in the on field
workout portion. Others that were part of the long trip
into the college football postseason did like the national champion

(28:51):
quarterback Will Howard disaster and like semi finalists, quin yours
thumbs up, pretty good performance. I have people to telling
me things about quinn yours and how much he impressed
in shorts at the NFL Combine, because there's not enough
tape on him from an entire career at the University
of Texas. But he has an excuse built in how

(29:13):
many games did you play healthy this year? Quinn? And
that information when he divulged what a tiny, tiny number
he says it was that probably did help his cost,
but certainly when the combine takes place. What is next
interviews at facilities. The Titans have lined up interviews with
the likeliest four candidates to go one, two, three, and

(29:34):
four pro days, where some of those that did not
participate for performance reasons, agents reasons, or health reasons they'll
perform at their pro days over the next four weeks
five weeks leading up to the ultimate the NFL Draft
coming up in late April. You've seen it from the
moment of college football season ends. You see someone's thoughts

(29:54):
on where these players might go in a draft and
when the NFL season ends. You also have the actual
slots where the NFL teams will make their picks. The
text and slide in at twenty five. So what comes
along with it is those two special off season words
that everybody cannot get enough of. And now the combine
is complete. I feel like it's time for us to

(30:15):
dive in headfirst. Every time you hear these words, you
will hear this parody song. Every time we get into
an NFL discussion and these two words are used, you
will hear this parody song. Probably not fifteen times a day,
maybe once a day, maybe twice, but over the course
of any given week here five shows per week, four
hours per day most days, you're probably gonna get used

(30:35):
to it almost as much as the best of X
parody song. But it's time for us here on the
A team, myself, ac Dan, you guys out there on
the phone lines. It's seven one three two one two
five seven ninety. It's time for us to enjoy ourselves
and talk about mock drafts. Well, I'm so cool in
my vest in a room full of scouts. Got the

(30:57):
forty eight bits. If you're past just hell, you'll think
you'll be all picking angel gotta.

Speaker 4 (31:04):
Some to wander Lick.

Speaker 3 (31:18):
I can confirm both the songwriter and performer are aware
how unutilized the wonder Lick is. But he writes for rhymes,
he performs for rhymes. That's how he performed. Are those
two people aware of how awesome that parody is? Probably unlikely,
considering the facial expressions they're currently giving, the lack of

(31:39):
excitement in their voice, the monotone nature with which they're
delivering their soliloquy here both into and out of the
song on brand. But it'll change because we're shwing to
have fun here on the radio. So yes, I hope
that will be stuck with all of our listeners, just
like the best of X has become, so get used
to it. Who are the teams that matter most to

(32:00):
the Houston Texans gonna emerge from the twenty twenty five
first round with most notably the Houston Texans. Some tight
end talk with the Houston Texans, Which big ten tight
end can they get their claws in? Probably neither of
them if they draft twenty five. But there's Colston Loveland.

(32:21):
Some people are wondering could he possibly slip past the
Chargers at twenty two where former Michigan head coach Jim
Harbaugh sits with the twenty second pick in the draft.
There's no way the likely number one tight end on
many teams draft boards, Tyler Warren from Penn State, No
way he lasts all the way to twenty five. And

(32:42):
with the Texans having not one, not two, but three
tight ends currently under contract for the upcoming season, one
who was just drafted Cade'stover, one who was drafted four
years ago now in the fifth year is first year
of his extension, Revin Jordan, and the other one under
contract for three years thirty six million as of last

(33:04):
off season. And there aren't really very many avenues to
release Dalton Schultz where you're not just paying for him now,
you'd be paying for him almost the same amount to
not play for you. Don't think there's any trade takers either,
So I don't know that the Texans are gonna look
at their roster, look at the board at twenty five,
think about best available player, and still walk in on

(33:25):
tight end. The mock we look at today from our
friends over at Yahoo, Nate Tice is someone I think
we believe in quite a bit hope to have him
join us. Here over the next couple of weeks, maybe
on more than one occasion. What does he think the
Texans will do now that the combine is over? He
thinks what nearly everybody else thinks into and out of
the NFL Combine. The Houston Texans select former teammate of CJ.

(33:50):
Stroud at Ohio state wide receiver A Mecca Egbuka.

Speaker 2 (33:55):
I mean, if it's not an offensive lineman, isn't that
who everybody has them taken?

Speaker 3 (33:59):
Well, there's a lot of offensive linemen. I'm gonna I'm
gonna guess I would set the over under it two
and a half. Offensive linemen go within the ten picks
surrounding the Texans on either side of it. Yes, okay,
you know the five before the five after including their own,
and I think I would take the over. I think
it's gonna be three. I mean, I'm not sure if

(34:20):
I'm setting it too low. Texans have some interesting decisions
to make as it relates to what the offensive line
will look like before they get to the draft, because
you can make your post June first cuts prior to
June first. It's what the Eagles essentially reportedly did today
with Darius Slay It's what the Jets are doing with

(34:41):
Aaron Rodgers, and I think quite clearly the Texans will
be doing with Shack Mason. I don't see any scenario
where the Texans should want Shaq Mason and his contract
to be on the twenty twenty five version, and this
mostsane financial way to do that is designate him a
post your first take the nine million dollars in cap

(35:02):
savings rather than paying him fourteen million dollars, and find
somebody else to play that position, just like they were
forced to do at the end of last season. Finally
compelled to do at the end of the last season
because he got hurt and then unfortunately foolishly put him
back in the lineup for what turned out to be
what I think will be his final game as a Texan.

(35:24):
There are interior offensive linemen that probably will go in
and around there, not so much that something popped out
at the combine. There are clear tackles that the Texans
might consider, even though they just drafted a tackle in
the second round last year, even though they're paying two
other players to play tackle for them at tackle salaries

(35:46):
in Titus Howard and Laramie Tunzel. So it surprised me
at least a little bit if they did that in
late April, unless we already know financially they decided to
part ways with Titus Howard because of cap savings you
could get you could renegotiate with him and save some money.
But he's on the interior line as of two day,

(36:07):
and I'm not sure what's gonna bump him back out
to tackle before they get to the draft or after.
And he's making tackle money. I mean, unless like, what
are you doing with Blake Fisher. That's the thing. If
you wanted Blake Fisher on the interior, you would have
worked him on the interior this year point right during
training camp during the season, when it was a who's
who if I can't play here or I'm hurt on

(36:29):
the interior of their line, and they never did it
one time. They moved Titus Howard immediately when presented with
that opportunity, because he's done it before and he'll probably
do it again. He's not making crazy tackle money, but
you've extended him. He makes very very good money. And
they're also not in a very good cap situation. But
I think everybody knows that by now because they spent
all their money last year, and I don't blame them,

(36:50):
and I'm not calling it a negative. It the offensive line.
I'm glad they tried to win. I like when the
teams try to win, don't you.

Speaker 4 (37:00):
The eighteen on Sports Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 2 (37:04):
I like you guys trying to win at Two Creeks
Crossing Resort.

Speaker 3 (37:09):
Listen.

Speaker 2 (37:10):
You have been hearing about this place for a long
long time here on Sports Talk seven ninety, and I'm
gonna tell you right now you need to get out
there for their spring super savings. You're talking about twenty
percent off all lodging from now through the end of May.
I mean, the weather is fantastic, but you want to
make it out there before it gets into that.

Speaker 3 (37:30):
You know that blowtorch we're always thinking about.

Speaker 2 (37:33):
Listen till May thirty first, twenty percent off all lodging.
You go to Two Creekscrossingresort dot com. They've got something
for everyone out there, including the kiddos. Friday evenings bonfire
with s'mores and outdoor activities, Saturday mornings, kids crafts and
kids activities, Saturday evenings live music. And that's just on
the weekend. Two Creeks Crossingresort dot Com. Glamping or camping,

(37:58):
whichever you prefer. They've got you at two Creekscrossingresort dot Com.

Speaker 4 (38:04):
All down the thunder.

Speaker 1 (38:05):
Well, now you got it, Adam Glenton, Adam Wexford. Alright, Glen,
let go the A team continues on Sports Talk seven
ninety oh.

Speaker 2 (38:26):
Just because we were done with the mock draft madness
doesn't mean we're not done with the NFL. There's a
lot like and I think this time of year, there's
there's lots of stories going on.

Speaker 3 (38:35):
One week out from the tampering period beginning, and then
we're nine days out from the league year beginning. This
is massive activity.

Speaker 2 (38:42):
It more than a few stories had me raising my eyebrows. Now,
T Higgins getting the franchise tag, that's not That was
probably the least surprising of.

Speaker 3 (38:53):
The Bengals announced that. Yet it's what's your source? Oh well,
let me let me get you that exact information. It's
pretty easy. It's just one word X no. It says
this is from the at T Higgins five account. Well
that's what I meant on X Yeah, it says tag

(39:14):
tis ago. He posted that tag a little over two
hours ago, and most everybody else was right on it
as well. I mean, honestly, that's probably a better reaction
than even the Bengals probably predicted. Well, he doesn't have
to and the Bengals have announced it, just in case
you were wondering he knew. I think they were pretty

(39:36):
clear because of what this offseason entails. They're sad that
they really did think they were going for it last year.
And there's really nothing wrong totally wrong with what they
did in the off season. I don't think they thought
sending Joe Mixon on his way and replacing him intentionally
with Zach Moss was going to be awful. But they

(39:57):
also still found Chase Brown in the process, and the
fact that they gave him the ball so much and
he was super productive. It didn't derail the team. What
derailed the team is they lost too many games, too
many close games, and too many games early in the
season to try to win out and make the postseason.
They had a playoff caliber team. They know that roster
was playoff caliber. So with Hendrickson and Chase needing fat

(40:19):
extensions and the fact they didn't do it last year
with Chase and with t Higgins there, this is one
way they can do it out. It's an awfully big
number to pay somebody. You better hope he's in mentally,
and I'm sure he will be because he's still playing
for his big contract. But they'll be on the books

(40:42):
if this is the contract he plays under, which it
looks like he will for twenty four million a year
for T. Higgins. I don't know what the number will
be for Jamar Chase, but I don't think T. Higgins
is going to be playing for the Bengals next year
without Jamar Chase. This is to me the first of
the moves they will make to keep Burrow, Higgins, Chase,
and Hendrickson all Bengals next year. It'll cost them other players,

(41:05):
but I think they really believe, even though they it's
hard to say it this way. They didn't even make
the playoffs. We weren't even one of the top eight.
But they think they can win the Super Bowl next
year with this quarterback them for that, not one bit.

Speaker 2 (41:20):
And when you have one of the top three receivers
in the NFL, and then and T Higgins isn't that
name MAT's, it's hard to argue against it.

Speaker 3 (41:30):
Provided they are healthy, you would have to believe they're
building their team wrong, and there might be other gms
in the NFL that think that. There might be fans
that think that. There might be Bengals fans that think that, hey, man,
we know we have a good offense. How much worse
would it be if you did this like someone posting, man,
they should have drafted Pine Sewel instead of Jamar Chase.

(41:52):
I mean, arguably, those are the two best players at
their position in the draft and performed as such. I
don't know that they'd be better. Maybe they would be,
maybe they wouldn't. Mean Jamar, how do you get more
production than what he's given. He's been unbelievable. You're winning
games because he's on your team. You're making big plays
because he's on your team. You're going to be worse
at that position by a pretty sizable margin if he's
playing somewhere else. But your heavy, heavy offense. You've lost

(42:15):
some players defensively because you've spent money on offense, and
you're going about it again. But I would do it
if I were them.

Speaker 2 (42:23):
You're just you're just hoping that you don't turn into
the Dallas Cowboys, basically, although they didn't lose. I don't
feel like the Cowboys lost a bunch of players defensively
in order to sign offensive players, although if you wanted
to characterize it that way, I would say they're offensive
players that they are trying to keep her better.

Speaker 3 (42:42):
Which Cowboys in the last two years are playing somewhere
else And you're like, oh, that stinks. That's true. There's
probably one player on the list. If it was even
within the last two years. I think it was a
little over that with Amari Cooper. But as time, what
has he done since he left? He had He was
good with Cleveland when he had some who could throw
him the football, and most of the time that meant
Joe Flacco. He wasn't healthy enough to make a big

(43:05):
impact with Buffalo this past year. So at the time
with who they had, and we were discussing, okay, so
you're trading him away because you want Gallup to come
back from injury and be great, and that was probably
a bad decision. They're not. This would be trading away
Amari Cooper would be like the Bengals telling to Higgins
to go find a contract somewhere else. By the Cowboys

(43:26):
should have kept him. They should have said, this is
a Super Bowl caliber twelve regular season win team. And
I think the biggest difference before we get into all
the minute show player for player stuff, the biggest difference
is there's not a person on earth, even Jerry Jones
or Dak Prescott, that thinks you have a better chance
of winning if Dak is your quarterback versus Joe Burrow.
And I don't even think it's close. No, I would

(43:47):
separate these two teams on that front. I Joe Burrow's
on your roster. You have a chance to win the
super Bowl. If you don't, it's your fault the GM.
You haven't put the right team around him. He's a
super Bowl caliber, winning caliber quarterback. It's up to you
to put the roster together around him. Cowboys aren't quite
I wouldn't say that for sure about Dak. They're on
their way down. Maybe. Well, I wouldn't have said that

(44:07):
in their best years. That's true. I said, he's really,
really good. But is he great? All right?

Speaker 2 (44:12):
So tell me if you've heard this scenario before. Red
hot electric rookie quarterback going into year number two. His
team finds a somewhat disgruntled wide receiver and trades for
him with visions of year two being even better than
that rookie campaign. I just described CJ. Stroud in the

(44:33):
Texans trading for Stefan Diggs in twenty twenty four, and
I just described the Washington Commanders trading for Deebo. Samuel,
what was your first reaction when you heard that that
was going to be the deal?

Speaker 3 (44:48):
Uh, it's a good move for the Commanders because they
can not a great move. A good move. First of all,
you brought up two receivers. Stefan Diggs exiting Buffalo one
hundred and sixty targets. That's what he averaged in the
four years, last four years before all four years in Buffalo,

(45:08):
including one sixty on the nose in his final year,
eleven hundred and eighty yards eight scores his last year
in Buffalo, the first year preceding his time in Houston.
So that would be akin to whatever Debo did the
last couple of years or last year. Specifically, he had
half the targets, he had fifty one catches, He had
six hundred and seventy yards all while basically everybody other

(45:29):
than Juwan Jennings was hurt at some point during the year,
he actually made it to the field fifteen out of
seventeen times, and his catch target rate went from one
to twenty one during his only the only awesome season
of Deebo Samuel's entire career was in twenty twenty one.

(45:50):
He was targeted one hundred and twenty one times, then
ninety four times, then eighty nine times, then eighty one times.
He's nice that he can carry the ball for you.
Super important to have a wide receiver that can duel
threat you by being a running back because you don't
have any. That's where I would say it's not very similar.
This is a seemingly clearly declining player that probably doesn't

(46:12):
play a huge, huge, not a bigger role. And they
played in San Francisco. Now, granted George Kittle was there,
but if you have Dalton Kincaid and you have Keon
coleman in or not Dalton Kincaid, it was thinking Buffalo,
if you have Terry McLaurin, who's the quietest awesome receiver
in the league, and everybody, I mean, look at what
zach Ertz did. Zach Ertz was basically, hey, anybody in

(46:33):
the NFL want me, and then they put him on
their roster and say, hey, this tight end's not so bad.
Maybe we should throw them the football a bunch, and
they did. I don't think it's a bad move. They
also can absorb the amount of money, which is, by
the way, why the Texans were never really interested. Made
no sense at all for them to be taking on
seventeen million dollars this year, made no sense at all
for them to be reworking a deal so they could

(46:55):
take on even more for the future and figure out
how to make it work this year, And the reports
seemed to echo that after this deal was announced, in
saying that he appeared to show interest in the Texans
along with the Commanders, but they the Texans did not
essentially reciprocate, and in my opinion, it's for those reasons.
I'm always worried about Deebo Samuel getting hurt because of

(47:17):
the way he plays, and honestly because of the way
Shanahan used him. I don't know if he felt he
had to without McCaffrey's health, but I don't I don't
know that that makes the most sense to see him
running the ball three four times every game. He had
a hundred carries over a two year span. He's physically
capable I suppose, but I don't. I don't envision the

(47:40):
commanders using him out of the backfield really. Ever, maybe
he gets ten carries this year, so completely different scenarios.
In other words, No, it's it's a scenario that's similar
as when he plays. If he plays, he's gonna make
us better. They just and then the Texans were in
the same financial situation a year ago. They could absorb
Stefan Diggs deal. Granted, his cap hit last year was

(48:04):
not very large because Nick decided to make his cap
hit in the future very large. It shouldn't be this way,
and this is why people hate discussing the salary cap
in the NFL. Oh, Stefan Diggs, he had a one
year deal. Yeah, he played for you for one year.
It was only there for one year. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
And he only had a one year deal. Yes, a
one year deal. Oh, but he's hitting your cap for
sixteen million dollars the next year. Why, Well, because that's

(48:27):
how the Texans chose to do that, to spread out
void years to not renegotiate or get him to sign
an extension before this February seventeenth deadline that just passed
two weeks ago. So No matter what Diggs does in
the future or where he plays, the Texans are on
the hook from a cap standpoint dead cap space to
the tune of roughly sixteen million thumbest thing ever. I

(48:49):
hate it. I'm one of those people. I'm raising my hand.

Speaker 2 (48:51):
Don't like talking about the NFL salary cap specifically, but hey,
at least they have one. The Good, the Bad, and
the ugly from over the Weekend is next.

Speaker 4 (49:01):
The A team on Sports Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 3 (49:06):
Five for five. Hey, it's Craig Vigio. Listen to the
home of the Astros in your home. Just tell your
smart speaker play Sports Talk seven ninety on iHeartRadio. Now.

Speaker 1 (49:18):
The good, good, the bad that's not good, and the
ugly that's getting real ugly.

Speaker 4 (49:26):
With the eighteen.

Speaker 3 (49:31):
We do it every Monday.

Speaker 2 (49:32):
It's the good, it's the bad, and it's the ugly
from over the weekend. Now today I am good. Dan
is very bad and WEX is extremely ugly. That is
the order of things. And it could not have worked
out more perfectly. Because I'm gonna draw from the pseudo
sports world something that happened that sent shock waves across

(49:55):
the country this past weekend.

Speaker 3 (49:57):
No, it wasn't in the NFL.

Speaker 2 (50:00):
A lot of that over the last half hours, So
wasn't a Major League Baseball even though Cam Smith is
an astro, and it wasn't in the NBA, where despite
what ESPN will try and tell you and shove down
your throat, it's not a big deal with Steph Curry
dunk for the first time in six years.

Speaker 3 (50:14):
It's just not. But what is a big deal is
John Cena turning heel.

Speaker 2 (50:20):
Yes, this is fantastic and I cannot be happy enough
about something that is going to absolutely play into the
main event storyline at Russell Mania.

Speaker 3 (50:31):
Now.

Speaker 2 (50:31):
I know what you're thinking, WEX could not wait to
get in here to start talking about this very important topic.

Speaker 3 (50:39):
I mean that's probably true. I do have the discipline
to do what needs to be done, especially when you
don't feel like it, which is Oh. I was just
reading John Cena's most recent post on the X platform.
It's five o'clock this morning. You think he scheduled that
or do you think he was up doing pushing the
ams pretty early to crank something out on the old
X platform. I mean, our boss might say us an

(51:00):
email at five oh six in the am, but I
don't know if John Cena is posting stuff on exit
five six.

Speaker 2 (51:06):
Is sending us an email after five am he was
late getting into the u a while.

Speaker 3 (51:10):
Yeah, he's exactly. He's already cranked out the necessary uh,
let's get ready for our day stuff for those of
us that wake up much much later than that. So
walk me through this. At what point during his time
in the ring, right before the kick? So there's three
people in the ring? Four? Who's the fourth, Travis Scott?
So Travis Scott, oh, non wrestler, soraging people and smoking

(51:32):
a blunt. Okay, Travis Scott, the co owner of the
UFL and some blond guy we're in there with Sena.
Is that right Roads in the Rock Yes, aka Dwayne Johnson. Yeah, okay,
is that correct? Yeah? Okay, you got your scenario mapped
out now? And then he was in an embrace with Cody. Yeah,
because at this point no knowledge of any heels being

(51:52):
turned correct.

Speaker 2 (51:53):
Well, The Rock had asked Cody Rhodes for his soul. Okay,
Monday Night Raw a few weeks are smacked down a
few weeks back, and one of the answer last night's
pay per view, which was elimination Chamber. You're setting the
stage for WrestleMania at this time of year. Starts with
the Royal Rombol. We are in WrestleMania season. It's the
super Bowl of Wrestling. It's gonna be in Vegas this

(52:16):
year where the Raiders play. So it's a big deal.
Anytime there's of course, anytime the Rock shows up, it's
a big deal.

Speaker 6 (52:21):
Right.

Speaker 3 (52:21):
So we're in the ring and at this point you
probably aren't sure, but I'll take it one step backwards again.
The second most recent post from John c N Tonight
missus March first, of course, the night of Elimination Chamber. Tonight,
I walk into my final WWE Chamber match to secure
my final WrestleMania main event. Toronto is the place where

(52:45):
I announced I would retire, and tonight is going to
be an event you can't miss. He teased it.

Speaker 2 (52:55):
Here's the problem, all these people that are upset about this.
They wanted him to do what the same thing he's
been doing for twenty years, Dress up like a fruity pebble,
say hustle, loyalty and respect, and just kind of ride
off into the sunset with the same boring music, same
boring gimmicks. Same jeorts everything else. No, he and again

(53:18):
I get it g rated merchandise. He's a kid, he's
all the Make a Wish Foundation appearance of bad ah blah.

Speaker 3 (53:24):
Blah blah blah blah. That's the good stuff.

Speaker 2 (53:25):
Man, Get this guy in as a heel for that
last run and let's bleep some bleep up.

Speaker 3 (53:31):
People who are watching the current edition of what w
W has going on that maybe even been with it five, ten,
fifteen years. When they think of Hulk Hogan, do they
think of him ripping off his already torn Hulk Mania
tattered shirt or do they think of him with painted
on dark beard shades and black clothing.

Speaker 2 (53:52):
Well, this is the equivalent of all of us that
were in high school and college maybe that watched him
turn heel in ninety six. Now we're all grown up,
some of us. I mean, when he did that in
ninety six, I was in high school, but I wasn't
a WCW guy.

Speaker 3 (54:07):
Knew that it was a big deal. So why don't
you push it forward? But John has been a bad guy.
Quote what's next? It just means that he's not gonna
be the same old, same old.

Speaker 2 (54:17):
And the fact that you're involved with the guy in
the business right now, which is Cody Rhoades, the guy
he kicked in case you didn't know, that's that's a
huge deal. I mean, the Rock being involved and everything
that went with it. Like, so, now who's he against
so to speak.

Speaker 3 (54:32):
Well, right now it's you know, it's gonna be he
was he with and who's he no longer with.

Speaker 2 (54:37):
I honestly, I don't know what the plan was gonna
be under the circumstances, but now I kind of have
an idea.

Speaker 3 (54:46):
I still don't know what the plan's gonna be.

Speaker 2 (54:48):
I just know that the way these characters are positioned
is way way more fascinating to me than it would
have been if John Cena was a now I don't
tan anymore good guy. Now he's a pasty bad guy,
and maybe that was part of it. He also has
hair now, which is also weird. But like this tweet
last night, I've watched wrestling for almost twenty years, and

(55:09):
this is the single most insane thing I've ever seen
in professional wrestling.

Speaker 3 (55:12):
They really did it. They turned John Cena heel. This
is real to me.

Speaker 2 (55:16):
That's gotten seven point one million views in eighty nine
thousand likes and the follow up is the best part
of this. Just a very casual wrestling fan here. But
isn't this like saying, I've watched TV for fifty years
and I've never seen a plot twist before. Aren't heel
turns one of the oldest plot lines in pro wrestling?

Speaker 3 (55:34):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (55:34):
All that's right, Allen, random person except for this guy's
This is the closest thing to Hogan since Hogan. And
that's why it's a big deal. And that's why I
think it's a good thing, because it's just not as
boring or contrived or routine as it would have been
per Paul Levesque.

Speaker 3 (55:54):
That guy's triple h He runs the show, his one
line I'll give you from him, even though we are
creating it. I'll be honest, I don't know what the
heck he's gonna do as a heel.

Speaker 2 (56:06):
Right, and here's the thing, none of this happens if
Vince is still in charge.

Speaker 3 (56:10):
All right, very good, good, I think it's all good.

Speaker 5 (56:12):
What's the bat Rockets Saturday night against the Sacramento Kings.

Speaker 3 (56:17):
Starting off, eh, not good?

Speaker 5 (56:20):
Then into the first quarter, Oh okay, second quarter, Hey,
that's pretty cool.

Speaker 3 (56:25):
Into the second quarter, No, not good third quarter.

Speaker 5 (56:29):
Fart noises, fourth quarter, more flatchlens, thirteen turnovers in the
second half, forty four points in that entire twenty four minutes.

Speaker 3 (56:37):
Come on, man, it.

Speaker 2 (56:39):
Just it was a nauseating loss. It was You're going
into playing the best team in the West.

Speaker 3 (56:46):
You want at least some of them.

Speaker 2 (56:47):
And again, like, just sweep the homestand these aren't hard
games to win.

Speaker 3 (56:52):
King's got a lot to play for. Yeah, And to
reference our earlier discussion, sadly, I will back it up
with some Rockets have only played the Lakers once. Lakers
didn't have too much difficulty scoring on them, even though
the Rockets beat them. They've played the Kings three times,
and other than the Lakers, the Kings versus Houston, the

(57:15):
team with the top offensive rating this season against the
Houston Rockets is in fact the Sacramento Kings. After their
third beatdown of the Rockets with different team, Zak Levine
was great and they didn't have to face Zach Levine
the first two times because that was the de Aaron
Fox era Kings. They have not been able to stop

(57:38):
the Kings from scoring, not in the first game, not
in the second game, and not in the third game.
If they had a fourth game, that would be the
only thing written on Ema Udoka's whiteboard. Not ugly, but
we'll have ugly for you on the other side here
on the eight.

Speaker 1 (57:52):
Team, the eighteen on Sports Talk seven ninety and then
Adam Wexler the A team now continues.

Speaker 3 (58:07):
Put the wraps on our signature segment here before we
get to the five o'clock hour, and tell you what
the ugly was from this past weekend. Each and every
weekday afternoon we get started on our signature segment around
four thirty. The good, the bad, the ugly kicks our
time back from the weekend off, and here we are
on a Monday to deliver that to you. We had
John Cena heel turn that was good. We had Rockets

(58:29):
performance against the Kings that was bad. And I'll take
you to the ugly. It took place in Indianapolis, although
I'm not sure everyone would agree it was quite so
ugly because I'm getting conflicting reports on the X platform.
But apparently the performance delivered over the weekend when the
quarterbacks hit the field for their on field workouts from

(58:51):
National Championship winning quarterback Will Howard were not real good.
Oof would be a word you think I beat texts. Well,
I'm just instead of going through it all, you can
watch some of the videos. You can see some of
the throws he made. You can see a bunch of
throws he didn't make. I'll just read you what people
were talking about, what the kids were saying. JD who

(59:11):
works for ON three, one of the recruiting network, says,
seeing all the lowlights of Will Howard at the combine,
just wish there was some way NFL Draft Twitter scouts
could evaluate him as a football player. Oh well, and
he attached some actual college football highlights. There's a movie
that I bet you haven't seen. What's it called. It's

(59:36):
a movie about a girl who has hot friends, can't
get a date, lives next door to really cool, good
looking guy, and she ends up obviously they're they're gonna
fall in love to high school movie. She's all that.
No no no, but spring break, No no no, not
that Halloween. I've only described most of the movie. I'm

(59:59):
gonna I'm gonna layout on that for a minute because
I bet you our listeners know I'm talking to you
about a bad quarterback performance. I just described this movie.
I bet you they already know what I'm talking about.
A replacement. It's not really even the name of the movie.
It's the gift that accompanies. Hey, look at Will Howard
at the combine, which is the whole point. I was

(01:00:19):
trying to make Michigan fans bashing Will Howard all while
knowing this was their King's combine performance is hilarious. Highlights
of JJ McCarthy throwing in completions at the combine is added.
And one of the two quarterbacks who went in with
a very high draft stock and probably came out with
a very high draftcock stock considering you did not perform
on field workouts, is Shudor Sanders. He took to the

(01:00:43):
X platform and Will Howard's defense, I don't understand why
all hate non at w Howard underscore. He just wanted natty.
It's hard to throw the wide receivers that you don't know.
Everybody runs routes different. So I'll take that to our
friends over at to Barstool Sports, and they're right up.

(01:01:04):
They added that post to it, which begs the question, then,
why are we doing this? Why are we going to
the combine? Why are we sending players of the combine.
Why are we focused in on the combine if it
doesn't matter that he's thrown the worst passes anyone's ever seen.
You mean, because we already have film, Why hold a

(01:01:25):
combine at all?

Speaker 6 (01:01:27):
Now?

Speaker 3 (01:01:27):
I do want to add some of the the attitude
I think that this person who wrote this brought to
the table. There's a lot to like about Ohio State's
Will Howard. He transfermed k State, let him do a
national title, led the Big ten, four thousand passing yard,
seventy three percent completion, He's six four, two hundred and
thirty five pounds head for hands measuring metric fans, He's

(01:01:51):
big Burley nine inch mits. But he also added this line,
one of the rare OSU players to go to classes,
he graduated at three nine seven. Rather than just saying
he has a three point nine to seven GPA, he
got in a shot at Ohio State claiming they don't
all go to class. Does a performance like this matter

(01:02:14):
at all? It can't help, and it was ugly, And
there are some people that still believe this is a
first round pick. Mark my words. Read it here first.
See Sam Block from The Worldwide Leader in Sports notes
his numbers against Oregon, Texas Notre Dame in Tennessee. Fifteen

(01:02:35):
hundred yards, eleven touchdowns, two interceptions, four wins. Don't tell
me he's not a first round pick. If he goes
in the first round, I would be surprised. He probably
will go soon after. But I do think other quarterback
more quarterbacks are gonna get drafted early in this draft
than we think. I'll say it that way, but I
also think a bunch of teams are gonna end up

(01:02:56):
saying why did we do that in about a year
or two, especially if he goes in the first round. Well,
that's specific to him, but team will draft Tyler Slow
a little early. I think, even though he's twenty six
years old. I'm not sure where should or Sanders is going.
But I'm not sure that the team that drafts him
is going to be excited. If team drafts can award
at number one. I don't think that team is going

(01:03:18):
to be super excited about that because he has to
be your guy at number one, and if he's not,
you made a mistake. Unless every other player in the
draft is awful. Unless Abdul Carter can't turn your defensive
line around and be a will Anderson caliber player unless
name everybody else in the draft, literally every single one

(01:03:40):
of them.

Speaker 2 (01:03:42):
It was awful. I mean, I know, it's underwear Olympics.
I know I make fun of it, so it's kind
of it's disingenuous for me to really get on the
kid for having a bad performance there. But then again,
it is underwear Olympics and they are just running around
in shorts, so it's like the easiest possible conditions to
be completing those passes, and he was just airmailing some
of those for.

Speaker 3 (01:04:03):
Those that were listening in closely. There's a little movie
called The Duff and there's a football scene where the
star of the show, we'll call him Wesley, he was
playing quarterback Tough and he had the least appealing, most unrealistic,
laughable throwing motion in the history of major motion. And

(01:04:26):
it's attached to every comical throwing professional or collegiate as
a gift till the end of time. It's been. It's
been making the rounds for ten years. I don't think
I've seen.

Speaker 2 (01:04:38):
I mean, I'm sure I have, and then i'll when
I reckon, because I've never seen the Duff or even
heard of the Duff When I hear duff, I think
of an alcoholic beverage on a Simpsons.

Speaker 3 (01:04:44):
Well, Duff is teen slang duff. Do you want to
know what the du and the F and the fan
designated ugly fat friend? As I mentioned in the movie,
she's friends with two non duffs. I guess you could say,

(01:05:05):
and oh, they get this and they want to be
that and the friends with them, But they're friends with her,
and they feel like hey involve her, include her, And
I don't want to spoil the rest of this twenty
to fifteen movie.

Speaker 2 (01:05:15):
Clearly, I'm gonna have to after the Rockets broadcast tonight
and after preparing for tomorrow's local pregames, squeeze in a
viewing of The Duff before I get back here tomorrow
so I can give a full report.

Speaker 3 (01:05:28):
A high school senior instigates a social pecking order revolution
after finding out that she has been labeled the duff.
Oh look by her prettier, more popular counterpart.

Speaker 2 (01:05:36):
Now I don't have to watch it. I know how
the whole thing turns out. This is not a spoiler
for you.

Speaker 3 (01:05:40):
It's like I said, it's ten years old, and the
only reason it's even mentioned is because they thought, yeah,
keep this scene in of this horrific passer show them,
let's let's keep that in there. Then they did. So, now,
you guys, who's the star? It's nobody. There's no stars.
So is this like a B movie? Is this a

(01:06:01):
C movie? I mean, you know who Bella Thorne is?

Speaker 5 (01:06:05):
Uh?

Speaker 3 (01:06:06):
She isn't it? Although not really the star of the movie.
How long ago to come out? Twenty fifteen? Really, you
nobody should know this movie other than this one scene.
From a football standpoint, it's hilarious. I'm gonna have to
plug in the gift and everything else. All right. When
we come back, it's Football at five, so we'll delve

(01:06:28):
into some more football topics. We still haven't heard from
Jose Altuve from over the weekend. Play one may catch
up against the wall. Oh my gosh, she made it
look so easy.

Speaker 2 (01:06:37):
If only the guy that was playing centerfield had made
a catchup against the wall today, but he didn't. So
Cam Smith had an RBI triple and nearly had a
home run if you've been able to see the video
of that. But anyways, Football at five coming up next
here on a Monday edition of the program.

Speaker 4 (01:06:55):
The A Team on Sports Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 2 (01:07:00):
Rockets is going to be playing the thunder in just
a few here on Sports Talk seven ninety. You know
who's a proud partner of the Houston Rockets, Mocarum Injury Lawyers,
and they're a proud partner of you. Should you call
them twenty four to seven three sixty five if you've
been in a motor collision of any sort. Two eight

(01:07:20):
the number to get a hold of a team over

It's actually the highest possible compensation and your consultation is

(01:07:43):
being in a motor collision, you pay nothing unless you win,
and Molcarum Injury Lawyers again are available to you twenty
four to seven three sixty five. Give them a call today.
Two eight one two two two twenty two twenty two.
If you've been in a motor collision two eight one
two two two, twenty two to twenty two for Mocarum
injury Lawyers.

Speaker 1 (01:08:03):
Two lifelong Houston sports guys named at him Talking Your
Team series, Adam Clinton and Adam Wexler, are the A
Team A.

Speaker 2 (01:08:28):
It is the A Team Sports Talk seven ninety. It
is five o'clock, so even during the offseason, that means
it's football at five conversation. And we've actually had a
lot of, you know, topics we've gotten to with regard
to the NFL.

Speaker 3 (01:08:46):
Today, we haven't gotten to this one.

Speaker 2 (01:08:48):
And wex might want to talk about something else too
during this segment. But I feel like was I the
only one that was shocked when I realized that I
heard that Jimmy Johnson's retiring and he's been at Fox
for thirty one years, Simon law Dude, he's.

Speaker 3 (01:09:01):
Been with us from a football standpoint for an exceptionally
long period of time. I think people remember when he
was the head coach for the first time at Oklahoma State.
That was his first head coaching job, late seventies, early eighties.
Just hearing that will hopefully make you realize how long
he's been doing this. Forty at a time in nineteen

(01:09:22):
seventy nine. He was thirty six. That's when he began
his head coaching career. Wow. And then he became the
head coach not at Miami, at the U right and
made it it was everybody knew who he was. If
you like football, if you knew anything about football, didn't matter.
If you're a pro guy and not a college you
knew who Jimmy Johnson was. And obviously his profile expanded

(01:09:43):
when he became the head coach of the Cowboys, not
only because they were winners, but because he was the
person who orchestrated a trade that we still deservedly talk
about today to this day. Every time there's a deal
of multiple multiples like I'm underselling it a ton, a

(01:10:04):
bleap ton of draft picks in return for a player
or two, we references did they give up too much
to Seahn Watson deal that came up because of the
herschel Walker deal. But Jimmy Johnson from the time he
became super well known during the early portion of his
Miami head coaching days with the Miami Hurricanes, he was

(01:10:25):
there for five years, was the mid eighties. He stopped
working in the NFL when he was done working with
the Dolphins, right before we got to this century. And
he's been in the NFL ever since his time on
TV way longer. Yeah, in his time as a coach
or GM in the NFL. Well, And you have to realize,

(01:10:49):
even though he was just awesome at every stop, including
on television.

Speaker 2 (01:10:53):
Yeah, no, he's been great on TV is a thing
you have to realize, which I also didn't, although it
should make sense. He's eighty one, so it's not like
he's I mean, yeah, and the crazy thing is probably
the craziest out of this whole thing. I didn't hear
any whispers about this now, might have just missed him.

(01:11:13):
And you would assume when a guy's in his eighties
and he's still doing that, that it's you know, it's
obviously sooner rather than later. People like al Michaels, people
like that that are still doing what they're doing at
that advanced age. It's a given. But you still think
you would hear some inkling about it before it's finally announced.
And he just went on the Colin Coward Show today

(01:11:34):
and just said, hey, yeah, I've been thinking about this
for the last four or five years, and I'm gonna
miss it. I've decided to retire. It's been a great
run starting thirty one years ago. You think thirty one
years ago and I saw this. It's funny.

Speaker 3 (01:11:47):
I saw this video the other day and it was
almost like an accident. I think I saw it on X.

Speaker 2 (01:11:53):
The initial like Welcome to the NFL being on Fox
video that Terry Bradshaw like he's hosting. It's like a
first person point of view talking about, Oh, here's all
the things we're gonna do. Here's the fake field we're
gonna have, or we're gonna diagram plays and all this
kind of stuff. And you know Jimmy Johnson was there
on the set for that. It's just incredible. Like you

(01:12:15):
just said, he's been doing this for far longer than
he coached.

Speaker 3 (01:12:19):
And just to make you realize what life's been like
for the Dolphins since he departed.

Speaker 2 (01:12:29):
Or the Cowboys, even though they did win a Super
Bowl with his roster.

Speaker 3 (01:12:33):
Nineteen ninety nine or nineteen ninety eight and nineteen ninety nine,
his last two years running the Dolphins. Being the head
coach of the Dolphins, they won playoff games each of
those seasons, lost in the divisional round each of those seasons.
Dave Wantstead took over, and they did the same the
following season one wild card game, lost their divisional round game.
They didn't even score in the divisional round game. That's

(01:12:55):
two wins with Jimmy in each of his last two years,
so two total wins. And then he walked out the
Dolphins door in nineteen ninety nine. In the very next year,
they won a playoff game with Dave Wantstett. All right, now,
how many playoff games have they won since Dave Wantstett
won that one playoff game? What year was it? That

(01:13:17):
was the year two thousand, following Jimmy's departure. Zero zero.
That's insane. It's been twenty seven years, nearly, as Dolphins
said coach in his last two seasons, one each year.
That's two. They've gone Wantstett and Bates and Nick Saban
and Cam Cameron and Sperano and Bowls and Philbin and

(01:13:40):
Dan Campbell briefly and Adam Gase crazy foris and coach McDaniel,
their current coach. That's tallied the one Wanstett win, which
you could probably say was with Jimmy's players, just like
Barry Switzer would have to say if he was being honest,

(01:14:00):
keeping track. The Dolphins haven't won any playoff games, and
that's the most Hexans have existed. That's the most part
of all of this is it's just another reminder that
the Cowboys haven't done squat with a non Jimmy roster
since he left in the mid nineties. Yeah, Jimmy Johnson
on television has been great. He's really entertaining. I thought

(01:14:21):
he was very insightful throughout the years. Wasn't afraid to
speak his mind, which, as we've seen further and further
away from his beginning, that's what everyone needs to do,
or feels like they need to do, probably to the
nth degree. I thought he did it in a little
bit different way, a better way then, but it's just
the way everything is now. It was pretty awesome when
you know, he got word about moving to the Hall

(01:14:41):
of Fame. He went into the Cowboys Ring of Honor,
sadly only two years ago when Jerry finally realized how
silly it was part of the Pro Football Hall of
Fame now since twenty twenty. It was again just a
couple of years ago when he got word there on
set that that's where he was headed. We're bearing the lead, Uh, oh,
all that stuff. We set a bunch of stuff and

(01:15:01):
we buried the lead.

Speaker 6 (01:15:02):
What is it?

Speaker 2 (01:15:03):
His hair has never wavered. He's in his early eighties now. Now,
I don't know if it's a piece. I don't think
it is a way it looks real. It's just it's awesome.
It's changed shades, yeah, slightly, but not much. But it's
it's pretty much the same.

Speaker 3 (01:15:18):
And that's why the other part of his time in
Dallas that's become famous. How about them whatever? He said, Yeah,
we don't need to hear wearing a starter jacket. And
when they messed up his hair in celebration, it was
a big deal because it was so perfect.

Speaker 2 (01:15:33):
It was a big deal because it was also probably
so difficult. As somebody who used to have their hair
chiseled onto their head for my TV days, I get that,
and you don't at anybody touching it. It's great, now
do whatever you want. But it rolled those windows down,
haying I mess nothing up. But it's just I was
floored when I realized. I knew he was a little

(01:15:55):
bit older, I knew he'd been doing it in a while.
I did not know it had been thirty one years.
Until you sit and think about the dates.

Speaker 3 (01:16:01):
So the last update on their old wiki page, which
is accurate the Fox NFL Sunday crew reads as follows
Terry Bradshaw and Howie Long and Michael Strahan and Rob
Garnkowski in the desk with Kurt Menafie. Obviously Jimmy was
there with them throughout the years. Does this require an

(01:16:24):
addition or is Bradshaw, Long, straight Hand, Gronk and the
host enough.

Speaker 2 (01:16:30):
You know what's funny is they clearly threw all that
money at Tom Brady to put him in the booth
as an analyst, where I wonder if maybe that would
be a better setting for him, even though that's an
inordinate amount of money to be paying at one of
several guys on a desk, don't you feel like in
some ways he would be better in that setting? Now,

(01:16:53):
I mean, he could get but he's only his first
year being an analyst on games.

Speaker 3 (01:16:57):
But he's on there, and he made the Super Bowl
in his first year.

Speaker 2 (01:17:00):
Yeah, well, I don't think that was an accident, But
I just I wonder about that. They're not gonna change
the contract, obviously.

Speaker 3 (01:17:09):
But you're just basically saying what CBS is doing. Why
don't they do that. They hired JJ Watt, they put
him on set.

Speaker 2 (01:17:17):
Like, think about if JJ Watt was in the booth
with Jim Nantz, I mean, with Kevin Burkhart. Don't you
think it would be better instantly than Tom Brady From
a game broadcast standpoint, Don't you think you're.

Speaker 3 (01:17:28):
Giving JJ a little bit of credit to saying he
would automatically be good as an analyst? He doesn't. He
doesn't have I know that, But so was Fox when
they thought that Tom Brady would be. They don't care
if he's good or not. Clearly they'd care if his
name is Tom Brady.

Speaker 2 (01:17:43):
But what if you could have a guy in that
booth who is a big name, not as big as
Tom Brady, but he also happens to be good at it.
It's you defeat the Greg Olsen's not big enough of
a name problem.

Speaker 3 (01:17:54):
I guess you thought you had. I'm kidding. And how
good was Tom Brady as a Patriots rookie? I mean,
give him a chance. He was flabby, he'll be I
think he'll do nothing but get better. I think he's
being extremely heavily scrutinized and deservedly, So you're in your
first year and you got this gig. Yeah, you're gonna
catch heat and made it. He'll be not the opposite
of Tony Romo.

Speaker 2 (01:18:15):
Tony Romo came in and was like a profit every
play and everybody thought it was cool and gimmicky and
neat when he would predict things and then they would
happen every single play. And then after about a year
he just started jimming us all to death and not
predicting the plays as much.

Speaker 3 (01:18:31):
And he's just it's just obvious.

Speaker 2 (01:18:33):
He's he's there for the check almost, whereas maybe Tom
Bradio go in the opposite direction because he's so ridiculously competitive.

Speaker 3 (01:18:41):
He'll want to be the best in his field at that.
That's what he claims before he even started. I'm gonna
put so much work into this. I don't want to
go do this and be bad at it. We'll see
if that's the case. Do you have any thought on
which pregame show moving forward is better? Yes? Inside the NBA.
On the NFL side, I don't. I told you this
last week when we were talking about it. They do

(01:19:02):
nothing for me. In fact, well for me, it's a
little maybe for you and maybe for a lot of
people in our line of work. I don't. It doesn't
make any difference to me because unless it's the it's
a week they're not playing at home, I don't. I
you don't see it. Half the season. I don't see either.

Speaker 2 (01:19:18):
One was somebody that their routine is now firmly in,
you know, plant in front of my screen, because that's
where that's kind of the routine I've fallen into. You
would think I would at least take when the game
is about to come on, that's when I turn it on.

Speaker 3 (01:19:31):
I do not. It's not a pointment.

Speaker 2 (01:19:33):
Now, I don't watch Inside the NBA as much live,
but I'll see the clips afterwards.

Speaker 3 (01:19:38):
And the real clips. Are you going to make of
these other two teams? You're comparing apples and oranges. We
don't watch it inside the NBA for their pregame coverage.
What if these TV groups did postgame coverage for thirty
forty five an hour, an hour and a half like
Inside the NBA? Does that might be different? Who's the
Charles Barkley? No one can say they have one or
a Shack. Yeah, but Shack used to say and now

(01:20:00):
he's good, all right? So Jimmy Johnson done. After thirty
one years of Fox.

Speaker 1 (01:20:07):
The eight on Sports Talk seven ninety, we now returned
to Adam Clinton and Adam Wexelwerth on Sports Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 2 (01:20:26):
It is the A team, It's Sports Talk seven ninety,
and it's Altuve in left field. We've been talking about
it since before spring training even began. We've been dissecting
and discussing in all of the reasons behind it. How
much they had to do with Alex Bregman. Would this

(01:20:48):
have been Apparently, this would have been a conversation whether
or not Bregman was here or not, at least the
way the uh the Astros have framed the situation, Well.

Speaker 3 (01:20:56):
One hundred percent he's not here and they're doing it. Yeah,
I know.

Speaker 2 (01:20:59):
But if if Bregman had stayed, some people thought, well,
that's Jose making a concession, because then Peritis would play
sixty third.

Speaker 3 (01:21:10):
He's making a concession. Regardless. Yes, they're trying to be
they think. I don't think they're doing this to intentionally
be worse at baseball. It might turn out that way
as many think it will, but this is not an
effort intentionally in their minds to be worse at the
game of Baseball by putting him in left.

Speaker 2 (01:21:27):
Field, they're as sabotaging their twenty twenty five season by
doing this, in their opinion.

Speaker 3 (01:21:32):
In their opinion, we'll see it play out. He played
his first game in left field without a play needing
to be made. Then in a more recent game over
the days we've been away, he had to field a
ball that they're shortstop that I don't know if he's
going to make the team couldn't make Luis ski Orme,
so in filling in behind him and coming really shallow

(01:21:54):
to pick up the ball and try to throw a
runner out at home. Not a very good throw pretty
much any which way you'd want to measure it. I
was well up the line. It even got by the
catcher and it was deemed an error.

Speaker 6 (01:22:06):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (01:22:06):
And then he also was able to make a play
in the field throughout the last couple of days. He
was out in left field again today for their game,
a catch up against the wall, luckily in front of
his own team's bullpen, so he was able to catch
a little bit of assistance verbally from them. But here's
what Jose had to say after making a play of
significance in left field.

Speaker 8 (01:22:26):
You know it was kind of like a did flight
ball right on the on the fence, but made a
great play.

Speaker 3 (01:22:33):
Yeah, get good to be the first one. Yeah.

Speaker 8 (01:22:35):
I kind of like saw the ball going high and
I'm like, okay, that's going back. And then I saw
the wall. He saw the ball and I'm like, Okay,
that's gonna be interesting to see. So I got it
and then I hit the wall. But it was a
it was a great play. Like I said, I saw
the ball, I saw the fence. I know that they
were getting close to his shoulder, and in the last
second I was like, oh my god, I got to
catch it.

Speaker 3 (01:22:54):
So he was like boom boom, Like okay.

Speaker 2 (01:22:57):
We we talked about overreactions all time. If he hadn't
caught it his very first fly ball in left field,
no matter the degree of difficulty, it's so would have
been a thing like people would have been losing their minds,
even though it's spring training, even though it's one ball,
all that kind of stuff.

Speaker 3 (01:23:17):
They are experimenting. They'll tell you, and they've told you
time and time and time again. And even when I
say this, we're still gonna wait and see. Let's see
how he feels. Let's see how this goes, we're not
one hundred percent. This is something we're trying out, so
they're always leaving themselves out. This is additionally what josel

(01:23:40):
two they had to say.

Speaker 8 (01:23:41):
It feels like every fly ball I get or every
play I made is gonna be helping to get confidence
to start the season. So hopefully I get a lot
in spring training and if you know, for metting error
or a great place learn from d and anything that
can help me for the season, you know it's gonna
be obviously bustiff.

Speaker 3 (01:24:02):
To me much more importantly than any of that, which
is all the same stuff. What Joe Spot has said today,
I think is what I've been saying from the get go.
I wasn't one hundred percent sure I would be right,
but it certainly sounds like I will be with Joe
Spot is saying if we commit to left field, because
again leaving themselves the out, he Jose Altuve will get

(01:24:22):
more starts there in left field than second base. Uh,
don't want to switch him back and forth. This is
all from Matt Kawaharror of The Chronicle, quoting Joe this morning.
Right now, the plan is for him to play the
majority of his games in left field. Daisy plays second base,
opens the door for jord On maybe getting a start
and left field someone getting a DHD. So this move
allows us to be creative and do stuff like that.

(01:24:45):
And again, as Matt reports, he emphasized, Joe did, it's
really early in the process. Don't want to commit to
any of this without getting al two based feedback and
see how this continues to develop. Now here's what he
didn't say. He is a left fielder until his fielding
tells us he can't do it.

Speaker 2 (01:25:06):
Yeah, it's funny that the quote right now the plan
is for him to play the majority of his games
in left field is being written on March third, as
if that hasn't been basically what they've been saying all along.
I know it's not, and I know they had to
see him out there. But if you supplement that thinking

(01:25:26):
with all the things you heard from Dana Brown back
here in Houston before they left for spring training the
same day from Dana Brown, this was.

Speaker 3 (01:25:34):
Not this is what I thought they would do all along.

Speaker 2 (01:25:37):
This is what I thought they were saying without saying
it all along, and now they're just saying it.

Speaker 3 (01:25:41):
And now that he has caught that fly ball. Everything's fine. Well,
it's more about what is the point. Yeah, if you're
not playing in left field, you don't need If he
has to play second base, if this can't work, well,
of course not. It doesn't even make any sense to
have even entertained it. You'll only entertain it because that's
where he's going to be. Not Oh, we can put

(01:26:01):
Jose in left field fifteen thirty forty five times because
it gives us flexibility. It's the opposite. We're putting him
at second base fifteen twenty thirty five times. That provides
us flexibility. He is playing left field. If he can't
play the position, then they have to go back to

(01:26:21):
the drawing board on what they want their lineup to
look like every day, because now he's playing second base
and they're already gonna be worried about what that does.
He played a game in left field and he didn't
play all nine innings, and immediately after he left the game,
the ball was hit out there, but he didn't do anything.
That's what they want. Defensively, they want him to not
be asked to make plays. That's the whole reason for
this switch. His bat remains the same. Presumably, no matter

(01:26:44):
where he plays. This is clearly, I hope everybody clearly
about declining defense. Where can we hide him? Nobody involved
has ever said this only thing. He's gonna be a
really good left fielder. We think he's gonna make our
defense in the outfield better. Don't think teams are going
to run on him. This is going to be really
good for our outfield defense. Because they know that's bogus.

(01:27:06):
They know that's ridiculous. They know it's not gonna happen.
I hope that's why they're not saying, and I hope
everybody realizes that before we even get into this. This
is not going to make them a great defensive team
in the outfield. They're putting a liability in the outfield
as an outfielder because they think it hurts them less
than the liability he is at second base, where they
don't even have one. They do not have a second

(01:27:28):
basement on the roster right now. Who's going to play
twenty five and thirty games. They're hoping Brendan Rodgers shows
that he can be a good offensive player somewhere other
than Colorado, but they won't know that until they guess
and give him a roster spot that he can only
earn by whatever he does in spring training, and then
they have to hope they can hope that Mauricio Dubon

(01:27:49):
for the first time ever, is a plus hitter. He
might give you a seven hundred ops, might give you
a six' eighty. Ops that's basically what he. Is that's
not a plus level offensive. Player he's going to improve
your infield. Defense and, now all of a, sudden With, Perettis,
Walker paynya And, dubon maybe you are okay defensively on
the infield because three of your four players are plus
And perettis is probably. Average but this had to have

(01:28:13):
been their plan from the, beginning or else you wouldn't
even start. It he was not going to help your
team because he can go out to left field every
now and. Then the way you help your team if
he has to play second base one hundred and twenty
five one hundred and forty times is to go get
a guy who is an, outfielder which they declined to
do because this guy number twenty seven batting lead, off

(01:28:38):
you're left Fielder jose Al.

Speaker 2 (01:28:40):
TUVE i wonder, though how much this would have been
violently pushed forward even With bregman's, departure if you didn't
Have dubon on the. Roster AND i only say that
because we're coming up on the two year anniversary Of
altuove breaking his thumb in The World Baseball classic and
them being forced to Put Mauricio dubon there while he was,

(01:29:03):
out and he more than filled in. CAPABLY i mean he.
Was he was downright good for the first you, know
month of that. Year AS i, recall maybe you didn't
miss a beat, defensively that's for, sure.

Speaker 3 (01:29:19):
Because he's a much he's a much defensive player when
he falls out of, Bed i'm not really concerned.

Speaker 2 (01:29:24):
About but his bat was, decent, too better than decent
during that. Stretch but you, know you're that's wishful thinking
if you think that's going to be the case, now.

Speaker 3 (01:29:33):
Like this is twenty twenty, Three, April March may Or
march And april Late. March, YEAH i, mean his offensive
numbers were they were as the, same they were the
same as they. All he actually hit extremely well at
the end of the season when he wasn't he was
still playing a. Ton remember Maybe i'm misremembered ulus he
was a finding at bats for all sorts of different.

(01:29:55):
Players when everyone's gona, Play why why didn't? He, well
he because he needed to find at bats for all
these guys that were doing something his ops first two,
month seven, twelve then six, ninety then seven forty. Four
that's basically what he. Is but he played at a
high level, defensively helped you in every possible. Way instead
of going from an all star caliber second basement offensively

(01:30:15):
to oh my, god what are we gonna? Do you
just went to a guy who is a borderline everyday
player on the low end offensively is where he, was
and he's been below one hundred ops plus player each
of the last two, years where he's gotten four hundred
plus plate. Appearances that's below, average but still better all
around Than Adam everett. Right Uh, No Adam evert's a

(01:30:37):
better defender by how? Much though he was limited in
his positional, flexibility but at his best position Against duban's best,
position he was probably better plays plus level, outfield and
they're gonna need him again this year to play plus level,
outfield especially when they Trade jake to who for? What

(01:30:57):
that's so much meaner than the. Original but here we are.

Speaker 4 (01:31:03):

you've been listening to this show FOR i don't know eight,
years but certainly the last two, years, SPECIFICALLY i have

(01:33:03):
used a word very specific to The. Cougars they're not
just in The Big. Twelve they're not just competing in
The Big. Twelve they're not now just winning The Big.
Twelve they are dominating The Big, twelve dominating The Big
twelve since entry two years ago as a basketball, program

(01:33:23):
and even their account The Big twelve agreed in using
the same term when giving them a pat on the
back for their work. Done cougar's dominating AND i tip
to the five players that will be Recognized Tonight Senior
night for The university Of, HOUSTON Lj, Crier jwon Roberts

(01:33:45):

that you have h has done during The samson era
with all this winning and all this joy from the.
Program i've been there for a few of these. Presentations they're.

(01:34:07):
Awesome their social media department first of all out that
blows it up with what they produce from a video
standpoint for these players that many times are absolutely bringing
you to, tiers but being there to see what it's
meant to these, players their families and the university and
The sampsons as a. Family it's. Awesome still haven't been

(01:34:28):

for the ceremony and then leave if you want to
continue to not go to games WANT i don't want

Big twelve Specifically saturday after they Beat. Cincinnati it's been
a while since we've seen dominance quite like. This this
is a conference that's had some national. Champions kansas won

(01:34:49):
a National championship not very long. Ago, well you got
to make some noise in the. TOURNAMENT i mean they,
will they do every, year BUT i mean every year
they make. Too they need to like this is the
this is the year. Wex they moved up to number
three in today's latest Ap pole. Rankings what? Else?

Speaker 6 (01:35:07):
All?

Speaker 3 (01:35:07):
Right follow me on?

Speaker 5 (01:35:08):
This so On, friday there was a report out that
after it was pretty much revealed That Matthew stafford's going
to go back to The La, rams that The New
York giants were shifting their focus To Aaron. Rodgers, Well
Connor hughes with Sn y up there In New york's
kind of poured a little bit of cold water on
that of saying the name has been kicked, around but
as it's been termed to, him if they signed, him

(01:35:30):
it would be pretty. Shocking but there's an athletic report
today That Sam donald could be down to two, teams
Said giants or The Las Vegas. Raiders so take it this,
way if you're The, Giants rogers Or Sam, Donald.

Speaker 3 (01:35:45):
I'll give you a second. Here if you don't immediately
know the, answer you gave. Us Connor, hughes who's been
on the show, before do you have the athletic writer's
name at hand SO i can comment fully in the
WAY i would. LIKE i am clicking on it right,
now and it Is Alec Lewis, Okay so he's From,

(01:36:07):
minnesota If i'm not, mistake and covers The, Vikings Sam
donald's most recent. Team so this is a question of
From sam's perspective or is it a question from The giants?
Perspective and is this a question you're asking or it's
been written about if you're The, giants is It rogers

(01:36:27):
or is It?

Speaker 5 (01:36:27):
Donald probably as a bridge to whoever they more than
likely will take in the Upcoming.

Speaker 3 (01:36:32):
So it actually doesn't matter who wrote either. ARTICLE i
should just be talking to. You, yes for the Same
i'm SURE i got to, Say, Dan So Aaron rodgers
played last year healthy right pretty much every game every? Since,
yeah well he Was he's? Old is what you're kind
of hemming on?

Speaker 5 (01:36:49):
THAT i mean it also Usually i've been told with torn,
achilles it usually takes you the full.

Speaker 3 (01:36:54):
Year excuses started, Early Sam, donald same. Thing he played
last year pretty much as a HEALTHY nfl. Quarterback, yes
it was, Productive, yes thanks for the. Assist was? Productive
end of. Story, yeah are we? Kiddingsation? This neither one
of them's the long term. Answer you already said. That
everybody knows that also about eighty years. Younger it's what

(01:37:17):
are you? Doing why would? You why would you even
have this? Discussion there is an. Answer if it's strictly
about money and it's costing you less to Get Aaron
rodgers by all means ruin your season on purpose by
Signing Aaron, rodgers that's what you'd be. Doing WHAT i don't? Know,
YEAH i mean if you're trying to lose, again if

(01:37:39):
you're trying to get another draft pick because of how
you Handled Daniel jones and how you Handled saquon and
where you currently are in your ability to catch up
to The, Eagles cowboys. Commanders, FINE i don't care what
you do at. Quarterback if you're trying to. Lose Sam
darnold was, LEGITIMATELY i, think unquestionably one of the top
ten quarterback in THE nfl last. Year maybe you could go,

(01:38:02):
higher maybe top, Eight and you're asking which one should
you sign if you're trying to? Win this is a.
No this is a non, question a non, debate, man
a non. DEBATE i will not have it, debated AND
i will not debate you on, It so we're good on,
that all. Right finally to THE, Nba Chandler.

Speaker 5 (01:38:20):
Parsons on His Run It back podcast with an interesting. Take,
so of course everybody up there IN dfw is pretty
sad after The Luka doncich, trade but he says that's
not even the biggest misstep that The MAVs have made
in recent. Years he contends that not re Signing Jalen
brunson to a fifty five million dollar extension could be
worse than pulling off that.

Speaker 3 (01:38:41):
Trade the year he got one hundred and, whatever one
hundred and twenty from The.

Speaker 5 (01:38:45):
KNICKS i had NO i completely forgot that he was
ever with The Dallas.

Speaker 3 (01:38:49):
Mavericks OH i. Did. WELL i know this sounds weird
for how elevated his game, Is like he's only been
in the, league you. Know twenty eighteen was his rookie,
season a twenty two year old Play more than half
of HIS nba career was spent In. Dallas four seasons,
there and progressively earned more time by playing better. Basketball

(01:39:09):
his final year there twenty one to twenty two, season
his second playoff year with THE cop with The, mavericks
and he scored twenty two points a game on forty
seven percent shooting from the. Floor and then he's gotten
way more productive and way more responsible for what The knicks.
Do if you were, unaware he averaged thirty two points

(01:39:31):
per game in the playoffs last, year thirteen games.

Speaker 2 (01:39:35):
Played he's Not James harden, Light He's James harden after
coming over from the.

Speaker 3 (01:39:39):
Thunder BUT i can't. LIE i thought The mavericks were
absolutely positively saved by The. KNICKS i might not being
the team to give him that. Money this is one
of the all timers for. Me could not have been more,
wrong had it completely, wrong totally misread where this player
could go badly good for The. Knicks they're not listening to, me.

Speaker 4 (01:40:04):

At dan's, request based on the information he gave. Us
there's something you are not allowed to. Debate you can't

(01:41:31):
debate this question thrown at us this last, segment player versus,
Player what is a non debate heading into this offseason
The giants or any other team looking for a, quarterback
should it be this guy or that? Guy should it
be that guy or this? Guy you cannot debate this
if it's down to these two. Players which two players

(01:41:52):
are not allowed to debate on about who should be
your quarterback next? Year if you're a quarterback starved team
looking for a veteran bridge, quarterback you can't make this
debate if it's about these two, players can't be a
Debate who are those two? Players seven one three two
one two five seven ninety seven one three two one
two five seven. Nine if you know the answer to that,

(01:42:14):
question you will know the. Answer if you were listening last,
segment or you can just make wild, guests you might
even get it. RIGHT i mentioned during the segment when
we were talking ABOUT u OF h something regarding both
The kansas basketball program and The TEXAS a AND m baseball.
Program what do they have in? Common both were Preseason number.

(01:42:35):
One baseball season is in its. Infancy The aggies have
played ten. Games they got off to a very nice,
start and then over the last eight days they've lost
four times in five, games winning their finale at The
College classic this past weekend At Dykin. Park they Beat.
Brice they lost To Oklahoma state before, that Lost arizona before,

(01:42:55):
that lost To Texas state before, that and lost to
Cal poly before. That two of those four game right
there in their home Ice Cream, Park Bluebelt, park And
kansas they lost again over the, weekend losing to a
very very very Good Texas tech. Team they now have ten.
Losses heading into their game tonight against u OF, h
they're nineteen to. Ten they're still in the top tier

(01:43:16):
of The Big, twelve but nobody looks at them like
a legitimate national championship, contender nor should, they nor are
they ranked as. Such, again these are pre season number one.
Teams it's early for The, aggies but four losses is,
Alarming and In kansas's, case the voters just didn't know
what they were talking. About that's all there is to.
It but what does that have to have to do with. Anything,

(01:43:37):
well they both released statements in some former fashion over
the weekend regarding fans not handling this very well and
making it too personal and being out of line with
what they were. Doing bill self released the. Statement kansas's
behalf talk a lot about the game it's good college.
Basketball game just got out. Played he. Writes we can we,

(01:44:00):
tried we came up, short And i'm proud of their.
Efforts i'm also proud of their. Prep haven't had the
overall year that they've wanted that we've tried to, have
but hasn't been for a lack of. CARING i can
do a lot of things. Better we can all do
a lot of things. Better But i'll roll with these
guys every day and be proud of. It any criticism
about the team should be directed at. Me i'm the head.

(01:44:20):
Coach we also need to be focused on basketball and
not things being said outside of basketball that has absolutely zero.
Merit so he's commenting on how fans are treating their
players in a number of different. Ways statement From TEXAS
a AND m comes from a, ballplayer one of their,

(01:44:41):
Pitchers Shane, style and he, writes while tagging the university
and the Twelfth, man some of the things That i'm
seeing ON x And instagram are absolutely disgusting and. Ridiculous
we understand we're not playing to the best of our.
Abilities level of hate and disrespect being thrown around is
completely unacceptable and out of. Line the day we're. Human
no one's more frustrated than we. Are more of that

(01:45:04):
we're working to be. Better this isn't. Helping let's do.
Better gig them thumbs. Up so everybody's taking everything too.
Seriously everybody's taking everything too. Seriously AND i can completely
see where they're coming. FROM i wonder if others think
it's okay from the other side to, say hey, man

(01:45:24):
you're professional athletes now or does it even, matter Because
i'm sure they're. Right the stuff that's happening that we
don't see necessarily is way over the. Line, well, okay
they're playing baseball for college and getting paid for. It
they're playing basketball for their college and getting paid for.
It what does that have to do with the amount
of negativity hatred that's outside of bounds that they're getting.

(01:45:49):
Nothing remember when you remember in the ASTRO SHEETD i
remember because they acknowledge, that, yes we did things that
were outside.

Speaker 2 (01:45:59):
The, rules and remember some of the things they dealt,
with they were just, LIKE i, mean that's What I'M
i know that's an extreme, example but, okay who makes
the rules? Up at what point is it okay to say?
That and how much can you say and what is
it based think those are pretty.

Speaker 3 (01:46:15):
Different one of them impacted the so called integrity of the,
game the sanctity of the, game which was. Laughable the
other Two kansas And texas and m played the game
not to the level their fans want them to or
expected them, to, right and in The aggies, case holy,
cow they're ten games into the. Season but at the
end of the game neither one of those.

Speaker 2 (01:46:34):
Situations is it appropriate for you to like hurl death
threats or racial or a?

Speaker 3 (01:46:40):
Never? Right, YEAH i mean, Sports, yeah this is. Sports
even though this is, sports but even DID i say
this is? Sports you said, that and you Know i'm
not picking on, You but it's, like what's the difference
if they weren't being. Paid that's WHY i brought it
up to hopefully drive home that there shouldn't be a

(01:47:01):
Different they didn't enter into a new echealoon of hate
and disrespect because they're now getting paid above the.

Speaker 2 (01:47:07):
Table this is, why going way back in time to
When Charles barkley would come at fans rather, vehemently rather,
boisterously except for that one time where he accidentally hit the.

Speaker 3 (01:47:23):
Girl are you heading towards his ad campaign where he
Said i'm not a role.

Speaker 2 (01:47:29):
Model, No i'm Adding i'm heading. Towards if you do
that kind of, thing don't be surprised if you get
some back sooner rather than. Later now that doesn't again
going the other. Way you can't go into the stands
and start assaulting. People run our.

Speaker 3 (01:47:45):
Test you, know it's it's a two way street a
lot of.

Speaker 2 (01:47:49):
Times AND i think that, fans it's the longest, time
and we've talked about this a million, times everybody HAS
i think you, know fans think that because they buy a,
ticket they're entitled to a certain an amount of whatever
VERBAL i don't, know fill in the blanks. What but
it's it's very much it's a two way.

Speaker 3 (01:48:09):
Street it. Is and you, know if you get athletes
or coaches or what.

Speaker 2 (01:48:12):
Like for, example off Injured Anthony, rendon you, know got
that honestly kind of clever insult hurled his way and
decided to stop and uh talk about it with the.
Fan but then he reached out and tried to strike the.
Fan and you, know the fans, said that's the best
hit you're gonna have or the closest you're gonna get
to hitting something all season. LONG i don't remember the

(01:48:34):
exact of, phrasing but Then Anthony, rendon you, know came
at him, physically SO i don't. Know it's probably just
best to keep it on the up and up on
both sides of.

Speaker 3 (01:48:45):
Things easier said than, done, clearly because otherwise there'd be
even more altercations because the fans say things that are
out of, line and the players are then supposed to
not react at all and just go to the plate
and take a swing or bounce the ball and throw
it in the. Basket that's The Monday. Show rockets take
over immediately upon our, exit which.

Speaker 6 (01:49:04):
Is now.

Speaker 4 (01:49:06):
The age On Sports talk seven.

Speaker 3 (01:49:08):

(01:49:31):
