Speaker 3 (00:35):
Ay just after two o'clock on a Friday edition of
The A Team, It's Sports Talk seven ninety. It's wex
in Orlando. It's AC back here in our Houston studios.
Josh C filling in for Col Thompson. So an eclectic
(00:57):
mix here on the final show of the week, heading
into a big, big weekend. And I do mean big.
I mean, let's face it, wex a night like tonight
it is a huge, huge game for the San Antonio Spurs.
I only say that because I think this is just
a situation where the Rockets are gonna beat a team
(01:19):
they should and move on. But for the Spurs, it's
a measuring stick. Frankly, if we're being honest, that's how
I feel about it.
Speaker 4 (01:25):
Hey, listeners, do you love this or what? That's the
greatest tell us? Come on join us for the ride today.
This is what it's gonna be like, aren't you pumps?
I'm fired up? Man. That is a phenomenal way to
get the day started for those that didn't start the
day at three forty five?
Speaker 3 (01:40):
Did you see how petty I was on Instagram? And yeah,
we're gonna talk about your travel plans or your traveling
I guess I should say in just a second, but
did you see my recent story on Instagram? Just how
unbelievably petty it was?
Speaker 4 (01:54):
No, I can't wait to find out all about it.
Speaker 3 (01:56):
Well, I'm gonna tell you right now. You know, it's
a prime game tonight for the tellelevision side of things,
so you can always hear it right here on Sports
Talk seven ninety as far as television goes or radio goes,
I should say, but for television it's a prime game.
So you know, all the outlets are pumping this up
because they only think it's a marquee matchup with two
good teams, when really it's just the Rock.
Speaker 4 (02:17):
Rocket, Yes, taking on Victor Webbin Yama and the San
Antonio Spurs in an early season Western Conference showdown. Catch
it here on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 3 (02:28):
Yeah, exactly. Well, so Prime did their thing, and it's
the NBA's Instagram account. It's you know, it's got the
the Kevin Durant and that other guy side by side.
So I just you know, I took it upon myself
to do a little bit of creative cropping and I
advertised the matchup on Prime tonight as well. You see
the Prime logo, you see Kevin Durant, you see everything
(02:50):
you need to see. To advertise this matchup tonight on
my Instagram story.
Speaker 4 (02:56):
I know what your addresses. I'll check it out.
Speaker 3 (02:58):
I can't wait till you see it and just shake
your head and just roll your eyes at this person
who is in your life on a day to day basis.
Speaker 4 (03:07):
Love it.
Speaker 3 (03:07):
Yeah, it's gonna be awesome. I'm looking forward to it,
looking forward to calling it. By the way, I don't
know if you heard about the little wrinkle in the
offense tonight the game plan, because it is a Prime
exclusive game and our good buddies Craig Akerman and Ryan
Hollins and Vanessa are not going to be doing the
game over on Space City Home network. Ryan is actually
(03:28):
going to be on the call with Matt tonight on
the radio side.
Speaker 4 (03:31):
Yeah, I heard about that. So the three of y'all
will handle things tonight should be a lot of fun
and good to hear Ryan there after hearing him the
last several years alongside Craig over there on Space City
Home Network. Also should remind our listeners and ourselves it's
about time to get Craig, Ron and Vanessa on the show.
Speaker 3 (03:49):
Yeah. Do you want to do all three at the
same time or do you want to just spread them out?
Speaker 4 (03:53):
I would love to do that. I'll take the day off.
Speaker 3 (03:56):
No, I'm taking it off first. Yeah. No, it's gonna
be fun. Really am looking forward to this matchup because
I think all I don't think you know, nothing's going
to be determined on November seventh, but it is. I do,
in all seriousness, think that both teams are probably looking
at this as somewhat of a barometer because, let's face it,
both teams, with the addition of the Oklahoma Cindy Thunder
(04:17):
and that mash unit that is the Lakers, are probably
playing the best basketball in the Western Conference right now.
Speaker 4 (04:24):
Yeah. Five straight wins for Houston. Obviously, the Spurs started
off the season brilliantly, and even in defeat to the Lakers,
one of the only other teams ahead of them and
ahead of the Rockets. As the Spurs and Rockets have
the same five and two record, they have played very
very well. They have played their entire season without their
point guard, and they have played their entire season without
their point guard. Fred van Vliet's not going to come
(04:46):
back anytime soon. A little different for the Spurs with
dearon Fox, but again he's not going to be out
there tonight. They've figured things out around him. They maybe
will have a big three. I'm not sure that it
will actually play out like that, but Castle and women
Yama I believe is what they intend, at least initially,
and then we'll see about Dylan Harper and obviously his
(05:07):
health situation at least currently throws a wrench into that.
Rockets know who theirs is. They knew who it was
the moment they pulled the trigger and officially got Kevin
Durant on this team. They run the offense through Outpura
and Shangoon. They dominate on offense through Amen Thompson, and
they efficiently play offense through Kevin Durant.
Speaker 3 (05:26):
Efficiently play offense. You know, I think, if I recall,
you are one of those people that doesn't really lean
into plus minus as much as everyone else is that
is that correct assessment.
Speaker 4 (05:41):
I tend to on a game individual game basis, if
you should put it with did you watch the game
and you can see why it happens like that? You
can see why a player can have a poor offensive
night and have a great plus minus if you're referencing
that from Kevin Durant the other Yes, it's because him
being out there and missing twelve shots or going six
for eighteen or five for seventeen when he plays for
(06:04):
the best offensive rebounding team in the NBA, or when
he's out there missing shots, but he also has teammates
wide open all over the place, and amn Thompson, it's
not a cool This is not a coincidence. The last
two games are the least effective shooting games that Kevin
Durant has had, and along with that two of the
three highest scoring games in a men Thompson's career twenty
(06:24):
seven points in one game and twenty eight in the other.
Because it can't the defenses cannot stop paying attention to
Kevin Durant, no matter why he shoots in that particular game,
and clearly the Rockets are rapidly learning how that benefits
them where they need to be, how they want to
take advantage of it, and a men from his basketball
instincts which are just outrageously good, He's figured it out
(06:46):
very very quickly.
Speaker 3 (06:47):
Yeah, And I think that is like stopping short of
calling him a decoy because that's just disrespectful. But I
mean that's kind of.
Speaker 4 (06:54):
Are you trying to get Gene Hackman hired to coach
up this team and Indian or something. Kevin Durant have
to go in the huddle and tell e may look, man,
I'll make it.
Speaker 3 (07:04):
I'm telling you that is the term to use though,
because on a night where he's eleven points five of
eighteen from the floor and he's a plus twenty and
you're talking about it where Shingoon it has twenty. Uh
he has twenty in the e Yeah, twenty in that
game and the man has twenty eight and everybody in
the starting lineup was I mean the worst was a
plus ten and that was Shingoon, but everybody was fantastic.
(07:28):
And there you have Kevin Durant, he was a plus twenty.
Speaker 4 (07:30):
Like it matters, little love, It has to do with
the opponent. If you kind of follow along with how
that game went. Yeah, there were no runs. It's not
like this player went to the bench and Memphis went
on on eleven to two run and then the Rockets
built the lead back up. There were only a couple
of instances in the entire game after they took that
ten to two lead that they were ever threatened. And
that's why, no matter what five player group was on
(07:52):
the court, they kept their plus minuses kind of together
with one another. There's no stretch where they dipped. There
was no stretch where, well these players this combination, is
it really working because Memphis never put anything together.
Speaker 3 (08:04):
Yeah, that's true, and you can't. I mean, much like
with the Spurs, you can only play who's in front
of you. So I know I've made a lot of
jokes at their expense, but you know, I do think
that even with Jah Morant's drama, he's still a you know,
a player that much like Durant, he does demand some
attention and I think they still have even with the
(08:24):
departure of Desmond Bane. They have some nice pieces in Memphis.
But yeah, no, nobody is confusing them with like the
team that also had Desmond Bay and Dulan Brooks, A
few seasons ago, like it's they have fallen way off.
But at the same time, I think what has been
a positive, what has been working for the Rockets, particularly offensively,
(08:47):
to say nothing about the defensive end, which we'll get to,
is gonna be a big reason why I think. And
I could end up being wrong and I'll have to
eat all the crow after at least one game. I
think they're a bad matchup for San Antonio.
Speaker 4 (09:00):
Well, I was only half paying attention to that offense
defense talk. You just said we were talking about the Texans.
It's you know, how well their offense is playing and
we'll get to their defense here in a minute. Is
that the Texans? Or were you still talking about.
Speaker 3 (09:11):
The Rocket and still going with the Rockets.
Speaker 4 (09:13):
Well, their offense is going on just fine, we'll get
to their defense.
Speaker 5 (09:17):
Man.
Speaker 4 (09:17):
Is the other way around for that team. But yeah, no,
their identity is in a basketball sense. It's funny how
much that's been talked about at Texans. You know, what's
your identity and what's which I think is silly. I
like the way to Migo Ryan's handled that earlier in
the season. But there is an identity to a basketball team,
and this is why the NBA is probably already on
(09:38):
alert because the Rockets identity hasn't changed at all from
the last two years. The personnel has, and obviously the
offense has, but their identity hasn't changed one bit. They're
a defensive minded team. They need to get to where
they were a year ago, and they're getting there very
very quickly. We'll see about that when they play teams
like San Antonio tonight, a couple more games in the
(09:59):
next you that are against better competition. But their offense
is playing great basketball. While they still would solely tell
you we're a defensive team. We're gonna beat people up,
we're gonna bully people, we're gonna dominate them on the glass.
We're gonna create opportunities to get out and run and
score on the break. That's who they're going to be.
They just look like they have the makings of a
(10:20):
much more potent offense to go along with that.
Speaker 3 (10:23):
But that's gotta be even for the acquisition of Kevin
Durant and everything else. Isn't that still a surprise to
you that that's what we're talking about. Early on this year, I.
Speaker 4 (10:36):
Took the elevator up here at the Akroscher Stadium to
the sixth floor.
Speaker 3 (10:40):
What a name.
Speaker 4 (10:41):
And if you told me, well, they actually call it
the Bounce House. Heal, we'll get to that in the moment.
The don't want to confuse it with where the former
Hinz Field is. But if you told me, yeah, man,
the Rockets are gonna get Kevin Durant, Dylan Brooks isn't
gonna be here, Jalen Green isn't gonna be here. They're
gonna add Josha Kogi, door Infinny Smith's gonna be here
but might not play early in the season, and the
Rockets are going to be the best three point shooting
(11:01):
team in the NBA. Being that I'm six flights up,
I probably wouldn't jump out of the press box with
total surprise, but I am totally surprised.
Speaker 3 (11:10):
Yeah, it's crazy, especially when this team's identity was forged
so much on the defensive end. And like I said,
we'll get into that, but yeah, it was. It's been
amazing to watch and we'll see what happens tonight because again,
you've got a very very big defensive presence in Victor
winbin Yama, but he doesn't necessarily fare to well against
(11:31):
the Rockets, at least recent renditions of the Rockets, but
this one has Kevin Durant, so how all that shakes
out will remain to be seen. We will get into
a number of things involving that matchup the Broncos Raiders
last night put me to sleep, just like I thought
it would. We'll get into that. And oh, by the way,
as we get you ready for the Houston Texans game
(11:52):
this weekend against the Jags, which we will have Mia
O'Brien who covers the Jags for ESPN Radio, and we're
reaching out to Sam Warren of the Houston Chronicle. Trevor
Lawrence is running his mouth again, just like he did
in September. As a matter of fact, we'll let you
hear what he had to say then and we'll tell
you what he's saying now. And we will do that
(12:12):
when we come.
Speaker 1 (12:13):
Back back to Adam Clinton and Adam Wexler the eighty.
Speaker 3 (12:23):
It is the eight team Sports Talk seven ninety wex
in Orlando, Florida. I gotta feel like it's basically the
same weather as it is year round there, hot and humid.
I mean, do they get even less winter than we
do where you're at.
Speaker 4 (12:41):
Definitely less winter. I don't know how humid it is today.
It feels pretty nice. Unfortunately, I've not opened the windows
here in the press box, but spent I don't know,
five seconds outside so far today. But it's a nice day,
I can tell you that. And it should be a
good night for football here in Orlando because part of
the radio broadcast to night for the Cougars and Central
Florida a seven o'clock kickoff, So pregame coverage, we'll start
(13:05):
with that at six o'clock over on nine to fifty
year home for Cougar's football being the booth tonight with
Esh and Ted. So help about and uh it brings
me out to Orlando for today's show.
Speaker 3 (13:15):
So just tell me. Because you never get you're unflappable.
You never get upset about anything with regards to this
kind of stuff. Did you anticipate awful lines and travel
getting out there because you fly out that anticipated?
Speaker 4 (13:29):
Yeah? I anticipated it so as to not be flapped
by it, I guess, being unflappable. Yes, the seven twenty flight,
I have been paying attention a little bit to TikTok
and the news where people are telling you, oh my god,
these lines are outrageous. This flight was not out of
our international airport, so I already expected a little less.
(13:50):
But I could be nervous. I could be waiting at home,
or I could be sitting in the airport. I always
prefer sitting in the airport. So three forty five, wake up,
not too long of a drive down to the airport,
and I get on the shuttle and the driver says, so,
what time's your flight? And I tell her and I
(14:11):
have well over almost two and a half hours before
the flight leaves. When I'm speaking to her and she says, oh,
you're one of the smart ones. Last people on here, Like, yeah,
flight's in about an hour. And she's like, good luck.
And that makes me think, Okay, I can't wait to
see what this line is like inside the airport. I
ask her how long it was when she was last
up there, and she says, it's basically out the door
(14:33):
and if you know where that drop off is and
where you walk in if you're checking bags, and then
you take off to your left to get into the
TSA lines. And yes, I'm a commoner. There's no TSA
pre check for this guy. I don't go in the
clear line either, I go with everybody else because I'd
never gotten around to going tsa pre check like a
smart person. We do. But the line isn't anywhere near
as bad as it was really twenty minutes ago when
(14:55):
she had first been there. But it still was much
much further than you would ever expect to be. But
then it moved very very quickly. Actually, if I had
gotten there ten minutes later, the line behind me was
basically nothing says on the screens, probably takes about twenty
five minutes. It took about thirty five minutes tops, And
it was like, honestly, if I didn't know anything, which
(15:17):
is almost always true, I barely would have even noticed.
I know, yes, the lines are a little bit longer,
but it's not like they've created some maze of disaster
around the airport to corral all these people. Got through
the lines fine. There's plenty of people at the actual checkpoints.
The bins come your way, you drop what you need
in there, and you're on your way. Beyond that early flight,
(15:39):
it was never delayed. They never had any concern. Absolutely
full flight. The only issue was there were a bunch
of people hoping to get on. I don't think any
of them made it. I never heard one single call
for Well, it looks like we have a spot opened up,
so everything about it couldn't have been any more normal.
Speaker 3 (15:55):
Oh man, you know what you just did, though, don't you.
Speaker 4 (15:58):
Well, I'm not too concern about the next flight because
I don't know when that will be. You don't, Yeah,
because I'm not probably gonna have to worry about it
when I make my way back immediately after the game
with the team.
Speaker 3 (16:12):
Oh that's right, I forgot your Uh you told me
that yesterday. I'm on the charter.
Speaker 4 (16:16):
Fancy would have been on the charter. But I love
the show too much to miss yesterday's show.
Speaker 3 (16:21):
Yeah, that's true, that's true. Only appreciate that. All right,
Let's get to what we wanted to talk about here. Listen,
there are a lot of trash talk artists in sports,
and I think some of these people we just talked
about one yesterday, one of them is employed by the
Houston Rockets. He's one of the best in the business,
(16:42):
and he was at it again the other night in
Memphis and it was hilarious. And everybody, I think, well
for the most part, enjoys what Kevin Durant does. Both
on social media, and especially what he was doing with
Ja Morant's father and extended family the other night in Memphis.
Having said that, I think there's like a certain amount
out of earning the ability to do that, and I mean,
(17:03):
you don't have to. It's basically the only way to
not earn the ability to talk some trash is to
be bad at that sport. I think that goes a
long way towards it. Does that make sense? Like you
can be a bit player and talk a lot of trash.
I mean, look at Jose Alvarado. He's such a smarmy
(17:24):
little punk who, in the grand scheme of things in
the NBA doesn't really contribute all that much to be
causing all the freakast that he does all the time,
and he definitely talk.
Speaker 4 (17:35):
Does a guy like Draymond drop into this conversation for
you in terms of the ability to do so? He
got a bunch of titles yep, defensive, great, probably like
we talked about earlier this week, headed to the Hall
of Fame. And I don't know that anybody talks more trash,
both on the court and off, especially since now he
constantly has a microphone. Did you happen to see him
say I'm sorry this week.
Speaker 3 (17:56):
I did not because I didn't know he was capable
of doing that.
Speaker 4 (17:59):
Well, he used word you like to use, and then
he apologized for it.
Speaker 3 (18:03):
He said hate, didn't he.
Speaker 4 (18:04):
No, he was describing a very good player in another sport.
But he called him someone who I guess doesn't have
a home.
Speaker 3 (18:13):
He's a bum? He did, who do he called that?
Speaker 4 (18:17):
He called Dak Prescott a bum? Really, and he apologized
for it, saying, you know, an athlete to another athlete,
and probably you know, I apologize for delivering it the
way that I did. But and then he went back
to the point he was making and said, I still
stand by this. The whole point of it was he
was basically saying he thinks Dak Prescott shrinks in the moment,
(18:39):
and thus he called him a bum, apologized for calling
him a bum, but stands behind what he said.
Speaker 3 (18:45):
Yeah, trash talker, Yeah, I think. Well, you know, bum
can is open up for interpretation depending on the scenario
in which it's being used.
Speaker 4 (18:54):
He called him a Nativaldi, Yeah.
Speaker 3 (18:57):
Yeah, exactly, see Nativaldi's.
Speaker 4 (19:01):
Another multi time champion.
Speaker 3 (19:03):
Well, no, native Valdi's category of bum ship is different
than say, like Victor winmbin Yama's category of bum ship,
and then you know this guy that we're about to
talk about, Trevor Lawrence definitely a bum. Definitely. Well, let's
go back to what he said in September when he
was very very happy that as I's Al Schaier didn't
(19:24):
nearly decapitate him for a second consecutive game and his
team actually got over on the Texans for a change.
He was he was practically giddy when he delivered this
SoundBite at the postgame press conference.
Speaker 6 (19:37):
Means a lot, It means a lot. I don't think
it's a secret that we don't like each other. So
there's a pun game for us, and the final way
to do it. Like I said, we're gonna see him again.
So that's all I really have to say right now.
But it felt good, as you guys can tell.
Speaker 3 (19:52):
And now again audio does not do that justice. A
gigantic bleep eating grin plastered all over his face as
he was delivering those comments. Because they won seven is.
Speaker 4 (20:04):
Very popular and everybody knows it, and a lot of
people use it.
Speaker 3 (20:09):
Doesn't make sense, does it?
Speaker 4 (20:10):
It doesn't make any sense at all. That's the last
thing I would be doing if somehow that ended up happening.
Speaker 3 (20:17):
The guy who is so involved with semantics that you are,
I could see how that would be a hard concept.
Speaker 4 (20:23):
We got to dig down on that comment.
Speaker 3 (20:25):
I mean, if you if you not being able to
really grasp the concept of the term rent free, living
rent free, then I could see why this would be
an even bigger problem because it just doesn't make.
Speaker 4 (20:36):
I'm gonna have trouble with that one.
Speaker 3 (20:38):
Yeah, I get it well, but yet you understand what
the the grin in question means. There's different grins, and
he he had that one, so.
Speaker 4 (20:51):
It was clear and he made it clear, and he
wanted to make sure everybody knew that this was the case.
And I don't blame him at all. This is not
your tipical rivalry starter for him because it had way
less to do with well the Texans won. I mean,
who won the game where Trevor Lawrence got knocked out,
Houston or Jacksonville.
Speaker 3 (21:11):
I believe Houston won that one, didn't they?
Speaker 4 (21:13):
Just even the way I answered, I believe it wasn't
even about that. It wasn't like getting revenge for them
losing to the Texas was beating the team who has
the player that did what he did to you?
Speaker 3 (21:22):
Mm hmm yeah, and I get that. But okay, so
they don't like each other and all that kind of stuff.
But then if you're going to do that, all right,
he did it when he should have after his team won. Right,
that's when you're you're gonna get way less blowback, flack,
whatever you want to call it. But now going into
(21:43):
this edition of JAG's v. Texans, the one that's going
to be played in Houston, and yes, the one that's
going to be played against Davis Mills, not CJ. Stroud
and all that kind of stuff. But you're trying to
say that they're what what's the B word that he
called them? Wex Do you want to let the folks
know what he said about your Houston Texans?
Speaker 4 (22:05):
Wait a minute?
Speaker 3 (22:06):
What he called them a B word? Did you know that?
Speaker 4 (22:09):
Blowheards? No, are we gonna do this again? Yeah, let's see.
I don't know all the words that you want me
to say.
Speaker 3 (22:19):
I don't want to say he called them bullies. Oh no,
he called the Texans bullies. We're actually reaching out to
Sam Warren of the Okay, so he's so five o'clock
He'll expand upon this, because he's the one that rose.
Speaker 4 (22:32):
Yes, B's is that what Texans are? I guess the
Kirby Street Bullies is that?
Speaker 3 (22:38):
Uh? Is that what they would be called if they
were a faction, if they're a professional wrestling group.
Speaker 4 (22:44):
We got the Broad Street Bullies up in Philadelphia. I mean,
maybe we got the Kirby Street Bullies down here in
the age.
Speaker 3 (22:49):
You know Vince's son, Shane, it's his real biological son.
It's not just a character. He had a couple of
college buddies of his back in the late nineties and
they called themselves the Mean Street Posse.
Speaker 4 (23:00):
Let me see if I have this right. In order
of importance to the world of wrestling that we know, y,
Shane is fourth behind each of the two ladies and Vince.
Speaker 3 (23:09):
That's probably accurate at this point, And honestly, of the
two ladies, hits Stephanie next. It's not Linda. Sure, she's
in her cabinet right now.
Speaker 4 (23:18):
Though both Linda and Stephanie are married to extremely powerful
people in charge.
Speaker 3 (23:26):
Of and buff Well, no, Vince is no longer in
charge of anything.
Speaker 4 (23:30):
He gone time. At ye time, each of them were
co in charge, so to speak.
Speaker 3 (23:36):
Come on, man, like Trevor. Lawrence gloats after the win,
then waits till part two of the twenty twenty five
season in the latest chapter, and now he's gonna call
the Texans bullies. Nobody bullied him last game. It was
the game before that last year.
Speaker 4 (23:53):
Yeah, it bullied him. They hit him once. It was
a vicious hit. I don't know about bullied him. That
would be like when you hit him over and over
and you hit him, lay it and whatever the case
may be. Now he gave that answer that to everybody
just heard about that game, and you know, he was
asked about a certain play. He had a scramble that
got him a first down and he took a hit
at the end of it. He's like, did he was asked,
(24:15):
did that kind of feel good? It was kind of
like mini payback in a way, and he goes, no,
not necessarily. I was just so locked into the moment
of the game. But then after the game then it
sounds like, oh yeah, absolutely was everything about it was
so very interesting in that we just talked about this yesterday,
kind of leaving Trevor's comments aside until today. He sounds
(24:36):
like he wants this to be a rivalry. He sounds
like he wants these teams to not like each other,
and honestly, I wish that would come to fruition. But
the Texans of the team on the outside looking at
What if the Texans went into this game at five
and three and the Jaguars were five and three and
the Colts were sitting at seven and two, and we
know it's ahead of him the end of this season,
a second meeting with the Jags, two more meetings with
(24:58):
the Colts, the division time being on the line, bigger
things ahead for any of the three of these teams.
That's how you build a rivalry. Well, the game's got
a matter to both teams in the standings as the
season gets deeper into it.
Speaker 3 (25:10):
I'm telling you this right now, I am never been
more confident that the Texans are going to win this
football game.
Speaker 4 (25:16):
If if stone cold locks come later, listen.
Speaker 3 (25:19):
If your quarterback, after having already won the first matchup
in a division rivalry, is saying this kind of crap
before game two, you've already you're already like you got
one foot in the grave. As far as this l
what a bum thing to do from Trevor Lawrence, did
you just see this?
Speaker 7 (25:39):
You should be.
Speaker 8 (25:40):
Putting out between five and fifteen.
Speaker 3 (25:42):
Posts a day.
Speaker 4 (25:43):
Four hundred people were arrested for things that they said
on social media.
Speaker 3 (25:46):
History repeats itself type bangils succeeds.
Speaker 4 (25:52):
Never doubt that you're the one, Trust no one. We'll
believe you're the best other.
Speaker 3 (25:59):
Nothing's gonna I ever talked you. Now, you're the best
of the.
Speaker 4 (26:04):
Posting ever seen day. You know you're the best of
the breaking the entire interney.
Speaker 3 (26:15):
All right, for the second consecutive day, much to the
chagrin of my co host and maybe to the delight
of another producer, we're gonna talk about GTA here and
everything that's going on with it now. Yesterday Cole Thompson
was producing the show as per usual. Today Josh c
is filling in, and I confirm this during the break,
(26:37):
just to make sure both of these guys are affectionate gamers,
Like they're not just sort of kind of gamers. They
are down they like it. Matter of fact, Josh just
revealed to me he's currently all up in the Battlefield six,
which I've heard a lot of good things about. I
have pre ordered the new Call of Duty, which comes
out or is available. I think actually a week from today.
(27:00):
So it's all good. But you know what, none of
us are gonna be playing anytime soon. Grand Theft Auto six.
We went over this yesterday, and then, of all people
to send me this, I get a text earlier today
from Adam Wexler. It is a post on Vice Vice's
(27:20):
X account. I should say, Big Picture says Rockstar Games
fires GTA six employees over leaks. According to official statements,
and the caption is Grand Theft Auto Studio. Rockstar Games
is in a battle with their workers. The company says
they fired numerous employees over leaks surrounding the upcoming GTA six,
(27:43):
while employees claim the firings are part of a wider
union busting operation by the company. I let's just start
right there, man, So now we have infighting? Is that
what I'm reading here?
Speaker 4 (27:57):
I actually had seen this earlier before I even sent
you that, and had read more up on people saying
what the reason why some of them are being like
go and the problems that they're now going to have
and the leaks that are related. So I mean, I
hope I didn't make it sound like less of a
big deal yesterday because it's a big deal.
Speaker 3 (28:15):
Well, what I like is that if you go to
Rockstar Games's Twitter account, x account whatever. At Rockstar Games,
they after that announcement yesterday, they made they kind of
they didn't double down, but what they did was make
it even bigger mistake, which is kind of follow it
up on their timeline relatively soon with another thing. With
(28:40):
regards to the current version of GTA, it says, now,
it's just they do this all the time. Now anyone
can play GTA online on current generation consoles with a
GTA Plus membership, blah blah blah blah, joined the millions
of GTA online users, psive, Xbox whatever, whatever, whatever. What
do you think the responses were to that? In light
of yesterday's.
Speaker 4 (28:59):
News Uber Positive, You.
Speaker 3 (29:02):
Know, you were asking what years these things came out?
The Grand Theft Auto three, which is the first version
of kind of what we see now. I still think
it was a bird's eye view at that time. Everything
else is more like what you see today. That came
out one to two. That's the era Vice City, which
is the one that was set in the eighties and
had all the eighty soundtrack on the music on the
(29:24):
radio stations which was amazing. That was two to four
Grand Theft Auto San Andreas four to eight. It's a
four year window of playing that game Grand Theft Auto
four eight to thirteen, and then, of course the current
version released in twenty thirteen to present. It's now twenty
twenty five, and we've been told that the end of
(29:45):
twenty twenty six is when we get the next one.
Somebody just put that poster up. It got a lot
of traction. Oh did I mention that below all of
those it had a cow. I'm not even gonna try
and describe what's going on here, but it's basically saying,
(30:07):
you've milked this for all you can. The back of
the cow is very, very skinny.
Speaker 9 (30:11):
Now, I was a junior in college when five came out,
originally played that thing for two or three days straight,
miss classes. Yeah, and I don't think I've gone back
to single player since, but at this point I might
as well, because it's I feel like it's going to
get delayed again and again.
Speaker 3 (30:24):
It's it's been so many delays. Do you play online
or do you play the story? But it's just so
it's sweaty.
Speaker 9 (30:30):
People have billions of dollars and do whatever they want.
Speaker 3 (30:34):
Well, yeah, that's what you've got to do. Get one
of those shark cards, man. Yeah, two hundred bucks for
a million dollars? Is that how much it is? I
don't know. It's probably something crazy like that. By the way, Uh, wex,
she'll appreciate this one. You're aware of who Pam Bondi is,
aren't you.
Speaker 4 (30:50):
Yeah, she's somewhere in the political strategy.
Speaker 3 (30:52):
She's our acting attorney general, acting like one, or she's
in charge the acting currently she does act like one.
Get into that.
Speaker 4 (31:00):
I suck. I think I saw Christy Nome today. She
was on one of the monitors at the airport.
Speaker 3 (31:04):
Yeah, yeah, was she wearing tactical gear and or and
doing cosplayer.
Speaker 4 (31:09):
Just sending a message to the happy travelers.
Speaker 3 (31:12):
Happy travelers.
Speaker 4 (31:13):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (31:13):
Pam Bondi confirms GTA six is also on her desk
a waiting review before release. That's an that's an Epstein
Files joke. You weren't aware. Let's making sure you did. Oh,
I just I don't even know what to say anymore.
But the fact that there are there are employees getting
fired over this now supposedly, or the fact that we
(31:36):
can't even decide between the two factions, why they got fired.
Was it a purge or was it over leaks?
Speaker 9 (31:43):
It's just I mean, about a year or two ago,
there was a full on here's thirty minutes of how
this game's looking at.
Speaker 3 (31:50):
Right, so the leaks do make sense of being how
they why they would fire them. It's not just a
trailer like this was an intense this is almost here,
on and on and on. So I'm still mad twenty
four hours later. I'm still mad, all right. You know
who wasn't mad last night? Jalen Green fans. We haven't
even talked about this since the open wex How hilarious
(32:14):
was everything surrounding this story last night. I'll explain, and
you'll hear from Jalen himself when we come back.
Speaker 1 (32:23):
Back to Adam Clinton and Adam Wexler the eighty.
Speaker 3 (32:32):
Final segment of the two o'clock Hours. We will get
you into the simulcast coming up at the top of
the hour over on Space City Home Network. Rockets and
Spurs tonight, you'll hear it right here on Sports Talk
seven to ninety. Last night, guess who made his debut
this season. It's the first time wex that Suns fans
(32:53):
got to see Jalen Green in uniform.
Speaker 4 (32:57):
He'd had a hundred and seven NBA games for Jalen Green,
all as a rocket over his first four seasons, and
then last night he's just he's just better. I mean,
he's better than he's ever been. He's a fifty percent shooter,
he shoots forty six percent from downtown. I mean, he
scores twenty nine points per game. He's he's an animal.
(33:17):
He's awesome. It was great. Now, I obviously am speaking
a bit in jest, but before we dive into it
too far, this is cool. I'm I'm happy for the kid.
Speaker 3 (33:28):
Yeah, twenty nine points, it'd.
Speaker 4 (33:30):
Be good, be a good player.
Speaker 3 (33:32):
Yeah, No, that's that's what I think everybody wanted for
him when he was here, but it just didn't consistently happen.
And that's a big reason why. Coupled with the availability
of Jalen Green of Kevin Durant, and you had some
some picks that the Sons would probably like to get back.
You had a situation where Jalen wound up going to
(33:54):
the desert along with his good buddy Dylan Brooks in
exchange for Kevin Durant. So as you can imagine NBA
was eating this up last night. I don't know that
I ever saw him get this much attention when he
was a Rocket.
Speaker 4 (34:09):
I just keep this in mind. Yeah, do you know
how many games were played last night?
Speaker 3 (34:15):
Uh? One too?
Speaker 4 (34:17):
No one?
Speaker 3 (34:17):
What was the only one?
Speaker 4 (34:19):
It's the only game in the NBA last night. They
played the LA Clippers, the second most popular LA team
and Phoenix, who's gotten off to the bit of a
just disjointed start. He's been out of the lineup, Dylan Brooks,
diden in and out of the lineup. And this is
the first game of what was the biggest offseason move
in the entire league. Now, granted, the player involved that
(34:41):
went to the other team is the reason why it
was the biggest deal, but Jalen Green being a part
of it when no other games are being played, and
they certainly didn't want to talk about the Broncos Raiders game,
just like you mentioned in the open talk about that.
So if they provide something the game or specifically the player,
then by all means they a absolutely wanted to get
after it. Jalen Green played twenty three minutes, was a
(35:04):
plus thirty, and scored twenty nine points. He was awesome
from start to finish, eight in the first eight and
second eight and the third and helped them outlast the Clippers.
We're playing without James Harden and Kawhi Leonard.
Speaker 3 (35:17):
Right, See, it is very important, uh to bring into
focus James Harden for personal reasons, missing.
Speaker 4 (35:23):
The podium game for Jalen Yes.
Speaker 3 (35:25):
Well it was. But how about this, that's the Game
two version of Jalen Green.
Speaker 4 (35:32):
Well, it's the only game they know, and it was
the only game in that series where he played at
that high a level. I mean, yeah, last night, let's
say he played thirty five minutes and everything went the same.
That's a forty point game, no problem. And that's essentially
what he was able to do in that one game
against Golden State. I mean I watched as much of
it as was available to me. Where he was on
the court, why these shots were going in, where they
(35:53):
were coming from, attacking the basket, taking his jumpers. He
took thirteen threes. He only took seven two point shots.
This was one of the nights where those threes dropped.
Speaker 3 (36:02):
And the comments were positive, as you can imagine on
this Instagram post for example, And this is NBA and
NBA TV. They collabed on this post. By the way,
it's a it's a graphic. Jalen Green hits three for
twenty nine points. Phoenix knewest star is Amp. There's a
big cheesing. It's a different grin for Devin Booker. There's
(36:25):
a lot of positivity and then the comments happy for
him as a Rockets fan button that was one comment.
Another one says book looks happy. Another guy says Booker
can't stop smiling because he knows he don't have brad
Beil on his team anymore.
Speaker 4 (36:41):
I mean, I think it's awesome that brad Beal was
there and scored five on two of fourteen shooting.
Speaker 3 (36:48):
Huh, and then the other people came in five points
next game, seven points next game, Bradley Beal finally helping
the Suns win by shooting two for fourteen. Then do
it in the playoffs. Don't get used to his son's fan.
He will have two points next game.
Speaker 4 (37:09):
I mean Rockets fans just back off for a second. Well,
I don't assume it's them.
Speaker 3 (37:14):
I don't know. I don't think. I mean, could.
Speaker 4 (37:16):
Phoenix be saying this? Are they sore that they have him?
Are they unhappy? That they landed something well. Kevin Durant
was clearly not going to be a Phoenix Sun any longer.
Speaker 3 (37:25):
Yeah, but it's option three. It's I think it's casual
or not so casual NBA observers who see something being
praised and need to poo poo all over it. I'll
try to keep it clean with their very stinging, biting,
yet accurate, let's face it comments regarding a guy who's
(37:51):
just not consistent. We saw this a number of times
with the with the Rockets, where he would have, you know,
a really amazing game or games, he'd have a stretch
and then where was that guy? He went away for
a month, and I'm not exaggerating, you'd be like a
month like Jalen Green another nine points again tonight, and.
Speaker 4 (38:12):
I enjoy not needing to go through this with him.
I want him to succeed. I want him to be
far more consistent. I want her to play at a
high level. I want all those things rather than everything
that everyone thinks was the I mean, most of the
years they were losing, which is the biggest reason why
this is such a big issue. What if the last
two years were the only two years Jalen Green was
(38:33):
with this team, a forty one forty one team where
he's one of the better players, a fifty two win
team that needed more out of him in the playoffs
as one of the two or three best players, And
I think things would be a little bit different just
in that regard. But there's also the possibility that this
what they saw here was what he will be. I
think it's also possible that what you saw last night
is closer to what he will be one game in
(38:57):
no grand total decision on what Jalen Green is moving forward.
Speaker 3 (39:02):
Don't get used to his son's fan. He will have
two points next game. So mean, so mean, such mean
hearted people. All right, we will save what he had
to say because I mean, if I really wanted to
make this into a like a controversial shade throwing situation,
I absolutely could controversy. That's right. So when we come
(39:24):
back to start the simulcast, we will get into what
Jalen had to say. Plus get you ready for the
most extremely AFC South matchup in quite some time. Well
at least it's September, when the last time it happened.
All of that and more coming up on a Friday
edition of The eighteen.
Speaker 1 (39:46):
Two lifelong Houston sports guys named Adam Talking your Team.
Adam Clinton and Adam Wexler are the A Team.
Speaker 3 (40:02):
Back at it here for our number two. It is
the A Team. It's Sports Talk seven ninety. It's now
simulcast on Space City Home Network. I am here in
studio by myself, buy my lonesome, although Josh c is
right around the corner. If I get really lonely, I
can just go talk to him. But no, wex is
not in studio, but he is with us live from
(40:26):
Sonny Orlando, Florida. He is there with the U of
H Cougars, and we've had a lot to discuss over
the first hour, but now we can do it on screen.
I tell you this. We were talking last segment about
Jalen Green in his twenty nine points in his debut
for the Phoenix Suns last night, and you know all
the mixed reactions and all that kind of stuff. Again,
(40:47):
I keep talking about this matchup between the Rockets and
Spurs tonight, which you'll hear right here on Sports Talk
seven ninety. It's an Amazon Prime exclusive game, so you
won't be able to see it here on Space City
Home Network. But you'll be able to hear it on
Sports Talk seven ninety and the Space City folks will
be back at it before you know it, coming up
on Sunday afternoon when the Rockets finish out this road
(41:08):
trip in Milwaukee. But this matchup tonight has everything that
you are used to between these two clubs. Wex it's
been far too long since both of these teams, let's
just say, had a record like they do coming into
this one tonight. If you if you're not ready to admit, hey,
the Spurs or even the Rockets might be contenders, whatever
(41:30):
however you want to phrase it, it's better when both
of these teams are good and they clash in these
division matchups, Divisions don't matter anymore.
Speaker 4 (41:41):
They'd basically be skipping the step that the Rockets took
in between there not very good years and winning fifty
two games. This is something we're about to see from
San Antonio, because the Rockets went from the dregs of
the NBA and the twenty win we ranged the forty
one win season then to the fifty two wins season.
For the Spurs to get where their way they're playing
(42:03):
suggests they could be way early and haven't seen all
the Western powers and haven't had a struggle of this
and other injuries maybe to Wemby or whomever, just things
you deal with over the course of the season, But
that would be a huge jump. This was a non
playoff team, not even a playing team a year ago
or obviously the year before his rookie season. So if
they're in this stratosphere in the Western Conference, if they are,
(42:24):
you know, forty five even or certainly if they're a
fifty win team, that would be a step that the
Rockets did not skip from where they were to where
they currently are, and hopefully we'll remain there this year.
So that would be pretty phenomenal for the league. I
imagine they would love it if San Antonio didn't have
another year where they weren't a huge factor in the standings,
but rather we're just a marquee player that helps ratings
(42:47):
put people in seats, and this fantastic player remains to
be seen, and we'll see what they look like when
Fox comes back. We'll see how healthy they are the
rest of the season, himself included. But it's great to
see it now you said it, well, this is exactly
what the league would have hoped for when the schedule
came out, this wasn't changed. They didn't add this to
the schedule after the season began. This was expected to
(43:09):
be something that they wanted to feature for the league
on one of their new networks, and now they are.
Speaker 3 (43:15):
Yeah, So okay, real quick, before we get into the Texans,
I do want to kind of finish off what we
were talking about with Jalen Green, and I actually, full credit,
Josh discovered this. You might have already heard this. He
was talking about his game. It was his debut, it's
his first game with the Suns. He had twenty nine points.
(43:37):
Bradley Beal was opposing him and had five points on
two or fourteen shooting. It's all good in Jalen Green's
world right now. It could not have gone better for
him on Night one as far as him this season
here in the twenty twenty five twenty twenty six campaign.
So what'd you think Jalen tell us about specifically, you know,
some facets of the offense that allowed you to score
(43:57):
twenty nine points. Oh, computer's frozen, of course it is.
This is a Matt Thomas situation here all right here.
I think we have it. Now, listen to Jalen last night, Jalen.
Speaker 10 (44:10):
You're catching shoot numbers speak for themselves from three where
you're really efficient. Were you watching these first couple of
games on the balls moving in threes so we're getting
up and you were like, oh, yeah, like this is
gonna work out perfectly.
Speaker 7 (44:19):
Yeah, for sure. I feel like a offense just has
a lot of space and it allows us to get
up a lot of threes and allows us to play fast.
Speaker 4 (44:28):
Those are two things that I love to do.
Speaker 7 (44:30):
So yeah, I was watching the film We Broke It Down,
you know, sitting with the coaches breaking down film and
stuff like that, and everything worked out, so it's gotta
keep going.
Speaker 10 (44:40):
Can you remember any stage and do you assume when
you played with that much room before that much space?
Speaker 4 (44:45):
Nigs grazy, Uh.
Speaker 3 (44:47):
Oh wex if we want to, it would be very
easy to start some you know, some drama based on
and laughing.
Speaker 4 (45:03):
Obviously, when he next question did as in did he
almost try to just deflect it completely because he I
would say, it's pretty safe to say he was. His
answer was, no, I don't remember having spacing like that
in Houston, which is also fair. Now, if Jalen Green
was playing alongside Kevin Durant, like the best three point
(45:25):
shooting team in the NBA is right now. Without him,
it would probably be a little bit his game might
have been a little bit different. But this does also
set him up for the unfortunate fall that we were
talking about last second. He's not gonna shoot like this
every game. If he does, then he's one of the
five best players in the NBA. That's not likely to happen,
no matter how much room he has. And I do
(45:46):
think there is part of what he said is definitely
true for what I think their new coach wants to do.
The fact that he's playing with I mean, Devin Booker's
better than Fred van Vliet. It's okay, it's okay to
say that. I'm gonna say it. He is, and he
takes much more pressure off of his teammates offensively than
Fred does. Fred's great. Well, Fred would be welcome back
on the current Rockets team, and he was an awesome
(46:07):
teammate for Jalen, and he had a better postseason series
than Jalen. But I think playing with Booker in the
back court together, and I'm still surprised people thought, well,
how are they gonna match? How are they gonna I
know it's one game. Of course, they're gonna play well together.
They know how to play basketball. They figure it out.
This isn't really any different than James Harden and Chris Paul.
(46:28):
What are you gonna do? They're two point guards? How
are they gonna play? Because they know what they're doing?
And I think Jalen Green and Devin Booker will also.
But he's also he did this one night. They're four
and five, they've already had a four game losing streak,
and interestingly enough, the team has been pretty good shooting
three pointers. After the opener, when they shot thirty percent,
they've shot about thirty nine percent as a team the
(46:50):
rest of the season. That's not as good as the Rockets,
but it's pretty good. They do some things well from
that standpoint. Let's see if that continues, though, when people
realize the rest of that group there, as young as
they are. What if we stop? What if we make
it difficult a less efficient night for book and for Jalen, Well,
then we're golden. We're gonna walk away with a victory.
(47:12):
I would like people to see Jalen saying what he said,
but to be honest, we saw it all the time here,
How did he get his shots? He was given the
basketball and told to create them so so so often
wasn't like what it is now, and he just didn't
play with the team that very often. They left it
in his hands to figure it out. Don't you think
(47:33):
they left it in his hands to, oh, there's eight
seconds left in the shot clock and we can't get
it to Alpi? All right, Jalen, figure it out? Happened
all the time.
Speaker 3 (47:40):
Well, okay, And that's the thing I actually I mean
you could you can take that last comment, the second
one that Josh played and run with it. Even though
I agree with you, I don't think he was trying
to throw shade at all. It's the first comment, the
spacing comment, where I actually think you could take it
a few ways. Like you said, well, yeah, no, he's
(48:01):
not playing alongside Kevin Durant, and who's to say that
he wouldn't be doing the same thing if he was,
and maybe it'd be better for him. But what you
do know is that you removed him and Dylan Brooks
from the Rockets equation, and Dylan was their best three
point shooter last year. For better or for worse, However,
you want to look at that fact and you put
(48:22):
Kevin Durant in and they're lighting the league on fire.
They're not just like, oh good, They're the best offense
in the NBA. The numbers say.
Speaker 4 (48:31):
So, some of the numbers this year. To his point
about his own team, HM, Oklahoma City is number one
in the NBA and the highest frequency of field goals
that are termed wide open and Phoenix's second.
Speaker 3 (48:50):
But okay, Phoenix has played the same amount of games.
I'm assuming seven.
Speaker 4 (48:54):
Yeah, they're four and five and uh oh they've played nine,
eight and one. But what so essentially the first question
to Jalen that we played for he was a factor
of this. The reporter's been paying attention. They are getting
wide open looks. They are getting the shots that you
want the players and they do have a good three
point shooting team. And now it probably just got better
and then it'll get better again when Dylan Brooks comes back.
(49:16):
So let's see how long that goes. Let's see if
they can continue to create those shots, and you know,
maybe that it will be fun to now know that
they will see each other several times this year. It
will definitely get brought up to him, I think, and
again because he said it the way he did, I
think that question was yeah, I didn't have it like
this before, but Jalen handled it even though it sounds bad,
(49:40):
just because everybody wants it to I think he said, no, man,
I'm here now, let's let's move on.
Speaker 3 (49:46):
Yeah. No, and you're right, it is going to be now.
It won't be here, it'll be in Phoenix. But it's
this month, the twenty fourth, so just before Thanksgiving, the
Rockets will be in Phoenix part of the start of it.
A four game but only three city WEX road trip. Yeah.
I like that, although two games in.
Speaker 4 (50:08):
Utah for that series. Yeah, that's fine. One trip to Utah.
Clap clap, thank you.
Speaker 8 (50:13):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (50:13):
No, I'm not gonna I'm not gonna hate on that.
And in case you're wondering, you provided he's healthy, which
again this is the first time he's really ever missed
significant time for any sort of injury. Phoenix is in
town for the return of Jalen Green Friday, December fifth,
so mark you count.
Speaker 4 (50:32):
I think it was again. I'm not there, so I
don't know the actual extent of it, but it seemed
like as they got close to the start of the
regular season opener. We don't think he's gonna be ready.
We're gonna try to take it slow, and I think
they took it super duper slow and that was smart
and hopefully there's not a reoccurrence of it. You already
missed the first eight games of the season, so you
want some guys, You want your players out there. I
(50:53):
think as an NBA fan, you should want everybody out
there as often as possible. So I am absolutely hopeful
that continues.
Speaker 8 (50:59):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (51:00):
Rockets will not be facing off against Daron Fox tonight
speaking of injuries, but he is set to make his
debut against the Pelicans coming up on. It's tomorrow night,
so they've got a back to back. So the Rockets
missing the trade acquisition from the Spurs last seasons, that
will not be a part of tonight's affair. But yes,
some very very good stuff to come starting tonight and
(51:21):
hopefully for the Texans this weekend, We're going to talk
about the Jags coming to town. Miya O'Brien will be
our guest. She covers them for ESPN Radio and she
will join us.
Speaker 1 (51:30):
Next segment, back to Adam Clinton and Adam Wexler.
Speaker 3 (51:37):
The it is the A Team, It's Sports Talk seven
to ninety, it's Space City Home Network. On a Friday
edition of the program, AC here in the studio, Adam
Clinton with you, and then Adam Wexler out in Orlando,
and we're joined as promise by Mia O'Brien covers the
Jags for ESPN Radio, among other things, and using a
(52:00):
little Texans Jaguars matchup. So I got to start with this, Mia,
as we get to the second chapter of this annual
two parter, if you will, between these division rivals, what
did you think of Trevor Lawrence's comments about the Texans
being bullies, especially in light of what happened with the
ziz Alshaier last season.
Speaker 11 (52:20):
Yeah, I don't think it so much had to deal
with the az situation, gentlemen, as much as it did
the Jaguars and new identity under Liam Cohen and the
new triumvirate at the top of this organization between Cohen, GM,
James Gladstone, and the Paul of Famer EVP Tony Boselli.
I can tell you this given that Tony has lived
here after his post playing career and after his brief
(52:40):
hiatus in the city of Houston with the Texans. That
was something that he was critical of of the past regime.
Not to put words in his mouth, but it's well
known that maybe previous eras of Jaguars football were not
as physical, did not want to run the ball, didn't
want to pride themselves in the trenches, and that has
been the goal since day one when he took over,
and then of course the subsequent hiring of Liam Cohen
(53:02):
and James Gladstone by owner shot Con And so I
think that that has much more to do with that
identity than it does what occurred last year in December,
especially because Liam Cohen stressed that they did not bring
up prior to the first meeting week three, and they
continue to not bring it up this week even after.
Speaker 3 (53:18):
I'll be the.
Speaker 11 (53:19):
One to say it.
Speaker 6 (53:19):
C J.
Speaker 11 (53:20):
Stroud took a questionable hit of his own after sliding,
and of course the great debate of did he slide
too early or not too early rages on across the
National Football League.
Speaker 3 (53:29):
Well, I'm so glad you brought that up, because then
I didn't have to. I mean, in light of not
only what happened last year with the Ziz Auschaier's hit
on Trevor Lawrence. But then how Demiko responded to that one,
and then what he had to say this year after
what he thought was a questionable hit in the Denver
game that has you know, c J. Stroud out this week?
(53:52):
What was your take on that whole thing? Kind of
you're not completely unbiased because you do cover the Jags
watching that situation, you're a little bit closer to to
one of those scenarios. But what was your takeaway when
you saw how Demko responded to that?
Speaker 11 (54:07):
Yeah, and I say this is probably the Jaguars reporter
who has the most respect for Tomko of anybody on
the beat. Great switch up, bro that great. But with
that said, with that said, I do think the biggest
difference between the hit that was laid on CJ. Stroud
and the hit that was laid on Trevor Lawrence has
nothing to do with the sliding. It has to deal
with and from my former employer and my role there.
(54:29):
I saw it from our photographer with local radio here,
like you can see in the photo of where our
photographer was situated as hez also hear brings his forearm up.
I do not believe that the corner Chris Abrams Drain,
who I believe is who laid the hit on CJ. Stroud.
He does not bring his forearm into the picture. And
so that's not to little belittle what occurred to CJ. Stroud,
(54:51):
and it's not to be little this idea of if
a quarterback gives himself up that you should not even
go anywhere near him, or in inverse, you should still
be able to lay a hit on him if he
hasn't actually gone down yet. Point is, like I do,
think the two are different, and it has nothing to
do with the flighting. It has to deal with whether
or not the elbow was actually extended.
Speaker 4 (55:10):
It's an ongoing conversation. I asked Disease after this last
game about this hit, and just from his vantage point,
I didn't know where he would take it, but he
obviously brought the comparison up from how this was handled
on the field, no penalty, obviously, no ejection versus his
and I think, like you do, it was extremely different
in nature and then obviously anything that took place from
(55:31):
the league standpoint afterwards, suspension wise. While I think they
went way overboard with their basically what they said in
the press release, this has more to do with who
he was in other games than this particular hit. There's
no history with the Broncos corner. There is history with
Aziz al Shaier, but to this game and the player
that we're talking about that took the hit in the
last time when this took place is Trevor Lawrence. And
(55:54):
we talked to you at the beginning of the season
about this. Is Trevor Lawrence any different than he's ever
been eight games into this lake his new tenure for him, Yeah,
I think it's.
Speaker 11 (56:04):
Been an up and down mix, to be clear, and
I think the stats back that up. But really interesting conversation.
Not to plug some of the work that I do here,
but are my podcast that I do with the Action
Sports Shacks twenty four to seven channel, our local CBS affiliate.
We had Jeff Howe, the great NFL national insider for
the Athletic gone yesterday after his tremendous profile and tribute
to Liam Cohen and his family and the loss of
(56:24):
his mother. And in discussing that, you know, Jeff said,
because he does the quarterback rankings each week for the
Athletic and knowing what he had heard from people who
have worked around the McVeigh camp, the Shanahan camps, and
just kind of expectations for Trevor Lawrence stepping into this
new offense for the first time, like he thinks he's
ahead of schedule, which I thought was rather fascinating because
(56:47):
I have always said, and I've probably said it to
you guys prior to the Week three meeting, the comp
is not bigger midfield than Liam Cohen. The comp is
Matt Ryan and Kyle Shanahan in that you have a
quarterback who has already formed and has some semblance of
credibility to their name. Obviously Matt Ryan Circle twenty sixteen
more than Trevor Lawrence Circle twenty twenty five. But point being,
you had to ask the quarterback to unlearn and relearn
(57:09):
certain bad habits, certain areas of their game, and so
it was never going to be this simple. Okay, now
he's fixed. Now he runs this offense perfectly. If you
ask Liam Cohen, he would tell you that, yes, Trevor
Lawrence is taking more authority and more of an ownership,
not just from an emotional and leadership standpoint, but from
a physical Hey making checks at the line, Hey noticing this,
(57:29):
noticing that, alert and ensuring that everyone is communicating, still
getting in and out of the huddle quick enough. That's
still a bit of a debating topic for debate locally here,
because especially when you're going to kill the play at
the line with five seconds to go on the play clock,
that's not exactly the most sound quarterbacking play. So, to
answer your question, it's been a mixed bag so far,
But the fact that people who have seen and analyzed
(57:52):
this tree before knew that this was never going to
be a one year solution think that he's already starting
to get it for me is a really positive return
so far.
Speaker 8 (58:02):
Well.
Speaker 4 (58:03):
A couple of things off of that, Mia one, you
can always plug the Club nine zero four podcast that
you handle. It's great stuff. It's always entertaining and you
have fun. You can definitely plug Jeff Howe's article. I
read it yesterday. It's it's unfortunately very sad with what
took place, not only in the NFL here this week,
but obviously with Liam. If you haven't seen it, it's
definitely worth a read over there at the Athletic with
(58:25):
Jeff and beyond the is Trevor Lawrence better? Is the
team better? Because it does seem like from our vantage point,
there are a lot of the things that they did
in previous years with Trevor or with their defense. Some
weeks they look really good, other weeks they don't. Sometimes
they're able to win late, sometimes they're not. They're five
and three, is that? I mean? The simple thing is, yeah,
(58:45):
that they are what their record says they are. Where
do you think they're going starting at five to three
and heading into the final nine games?
Speaker 11 (58:52):
Yeah, you know, I think they're ahead of schedule, certainly
in the long term, but also within this season itself.
I think the fact that they were able to win
some games that many people on paper said they shouldn't
have in the first half of the season, knowing they
have the third easiest strength of schedule by some metrics
down the stretch, I think that that really bodes well
for the Jaguars. But I also think that it's important
(59:12):
because of the belief in this new regime continues to
grow inside the locker room. When you are winning and
you're seeing proof of concepts, that's immediate, and I think
that that you can see that it translates to the field.
It sells.
Speaker 5 (59:24):
Now.
Speaker 11 (59:25):
To be clear, I don't think they're going to have
thirteen takeaways in a stretch of four games at any
juncture throughout the rest of the season. I hope I'm
proved wrong, but certainly turnovers come in bunches. They did
not really come then in those two successive weeks after
that four and one start. But at the same time,
I think the Jaguars have recognized, hey, you know what
our identity is the run game. We need to lean
(59:46):
into that offensively and on defense. Look, sometimes we may
have to bend and not break. They know they need
to get more of a pass rush because otherwise they
can't just depend on the turnovers magically appearing like they
did in twenty twenty three. And to the overall r
for construction again, you know, and you saw this at
the trade deadline, which so many believe Bell the Jaguars
are gonna go get this person. They're gonna go with that.
(01:00:06):
They're gonna go big fish hunting for Quinnin Williams, like
James Gladstone is looking at this not just through the
lens of we need to compete for a playoff spot
in the AFC South this year, it's we need to
be competing consistently for Super Bowls over the course of
the next five seasons and so we need to build accordingly,
and so they know this isn't a finished product. But
the fact that they're winning gives the guys who will
be here down the line reassurance that they're on the
(01:00:27):
right pack.
Speaker 3 (01:00:28):
Talking to me O'Brien Mia O'Brien here on Sports Talk
seven to ninety and in that vein Trevor making good decisions,
And I think I kind of a two parter. Were
you I don't want to I guess I don't want
to say surprised when they extended him, but I just
did you question maybe that decision or if he was
the guy? And then as it pertains to this game,
(01:00:50):
if he is the guy, he's gonna have his hands
full with this Texans defense. And I know I don't
have to tell you that you've been watching what they've
been doing. The numbers, I guess I should say they
haven't been allowed to put up against them. So how
do you think that's going to go for a guy
like Trevor Lawrence, who is admittedly still kind of evolving.
Speaker 11 (01:01:07):
Yeah, I think that to the first part about the contract,
I wasn't surprised, and that granted was the previous regime.
So I don't want to speak for what this front
office would have done if they were in power, because
I don't know what they would have done. I think
that the previous front office believed that they were going
to get ahead of it. Not just from the perspective
of Trevor's best years are ahead of them, which I
(01:01:29):
would like to believe that that is the case as well,
but from the perspective of the value of the dollar
keeps going up and so we need to lock him
in now so that we are not on the hook
for more money down the line. Okay, like that, I'm
not going to judge their business practice to the point
of facing a Texans team and can he elevate a
roster around him that will not include Brian Thomas Junior
(01:01:51):
on Sunday, which despite the league being the league leader
in drops, make no mistake about it, with Travis Hunter
on ir he's your most physically gifted wide receiver and
not having him certainly as a blow to the offensive operation.
I think they'll see the Jaguars really lean into their
run game, just like they did this past week. They
rushed for the second most yards one hundred and fifty
one against the Raiders, tied for the second most with
(01:02:12):
that Week four win over the San Francisco forty nine
ers and trailing only their two hundred yard performance on
the ground against the Carolina Panthers, and so I would
expect more of the same. They really feel like they've
found something, even if they're going to be without their
starting left guard as Or Cleveland. I think that that
jumbo package bringing in the eligible tight end, even without
Breton Strange, who's at least got one more week on
the reserve injured list, I think that they've been able
(01:02:34):
to find success on the ground and that in turn
opens up opportunities for Trevor Lawrence Downfield. I am really curious.
So I don't have an answer as to how they
will utilize Jakobe Myers, who around arrived in town late
Tuesday night after being traded for early that morning, because
there may be a lot asked of him, knowing that
Brian Thomas Junior is out, Tim Patrick is coming off
of having just missed the game, and Diamy Brown in
(01:02:55):
the final phase of concussion protocol.
Speaker 3 (01:02:58):
Mia O'Brien, we could do another two or three segments
easily with you. I gotta say it. I won't speak
for my co host. I am a little bit biased.
You are my favorite AFC South guest we have had
on so far. So we got to catch up again
next season and do this again. Appreciate the time and
enjoy the game on Sunday.
Speaker 11 (01:03:18):
I appreciate a gentleman call whenever. I mean, we could
talk some college hoops to him.
Speaker 3 (01:03:22):
An AP voter just say what, oh look at that?
All right, well it's right around the corner you have.
H is very good. So yeah, I think we might
have to take you up on that off for mina.
Thank you so much.
Speaker 11 (01:03:32):
Absolutely, take care, have a good weekend, all right you two.
Speaker 3 (01:03:34):
Mia O'Brien here on Sports Talk seven ninety will react
to everything she had to say when we come back.
The A team on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 2 (01:03:47):
Hey, it's Robert Ford from the Astros broadcast team. Catch
every Astros game on Sports Talk seven ninety and the
iHeartRadio app Home of your Astros.
Speaker 3 (01:04:01):
Lots of good stuff there from Mia O'Brien, who covers
the Jags for esp and Radio amongst other projects. We're
absolutely having her on again, if not for you know
more Jags Texans coverage next year than yeah, college football
or college basketball. As she mentioned right there, just you
know what's funny wex is she was pretty candid about, well,
(01:04:25):
that was the last regime that gave this contract out.
I don't know what this regime would have done with
Trevor Lawrence. That's kind of telling, because I do kind
of wonder, in a bizarro world if we could, like
somehow see what they would have done in light of
what they only knew up until the point where he
got that money, if they would have made the same
decision as the regime that's now no longer in charge.
Speaker 4 (01:04:47):
Yeah, the timing of when James Gladstone takes over his GM,
and obviously the hiring of Liam Cohen, and as she mentioned,
the addition formally of former Texans legend Tony Boselli to
the front office. I couldn't say that when she was
on because she already snuck it in when she was
making her comments.
Speaker 3 (01:05:04):
Expansion, Yes, that's it.
Speaker 4 (01:05:08):
They are in a position where it will hurt financially
if they have to go against that in the near future,
but I think that they're likely to want to make
that decision. I don't think they are in love with him.
I don't think they're sold on him. I think they
want to see how high a level of football they
can get out of him. And through the first eight games,
(01:05:30):
it's a total roller coaster with him. Did a lot
of the things he's done in past years with different
coaches and different talent around him, They've had some other
things happened that are on the very, very positive side.
And we've brought it up a couple of times that
the playmaking has to be there if you're the quarterbacks,
Okay to make mistakes, as long as the playmaking is
there to overcome it, and you'll compensate for that. You know,
he did that against Kansas City after Kansas City went
(01:05:52):
down and basically won the game with not a whole
lot of time left. He drove his team right down
the field and he personally put him in the end
zone with his scramble. But it was the he made
two separate throws on that drive. They were just fantastic
to get him in. And even still there are plays
leading up to his scramble to get in the end
zone where the exact things that we've seen that she
was talking about just doesn't seem like anything's really smooth
(01:06:14):
when he's out there, And just from our first hand
vision of Trevor Lawrence against the Texans defense this year
and in previous years and even before this Demko Ryan's
regime was here, he just doesn't look like a supreme talent,
a supremely accurate passer, a fantastic decision maker, all of
the levels of wanting greatness from your quarterback. I think
(01:06:36):
he's just a cut behind everybody else. He's not among
the best at this. He's not among the best at that.
There's so many different areas of his game where he's
kind of finding a way to compete every week and
compete with the maybe the other quarterbacks on the other
side that are better than him. But I don't think
that they're one hundred percent locked into saying, well, we're
not worrying about this position for the next handful of
(01:06:58):
years while he's under contract. We have a great chance
to win because he is a great quarterback. They really
look to me like they're trying to build a much
better team. So when and if they don't think he's
the guy, they can still win as they find out, well,
who else are we gonna.
Speaker 3 (01:07:13):
Get well, that's a good point, because I don't does it.
I mean, you might agree or disagree on this, even
with the i'll say uneven play to be polite of
Trevor Lawrence. Right, the Jags feel like they're being run
different for the first time in I don't even remember
(01:07:35):
the last time it felt like they It just doesn't
feel like it's the same old Jags from that standpoint,
But then you look at Trevor Lawrence and it's it's
not probably the guy. Like I don't think if everything
went right for them, could he lead them to a championship.
(01:07:56):
I mean, I guess I just don't know if it's
possible to have success with game managers or maybe even
above average game managers in today's NFL, with with what
you're required to do from a passing standpoint, But I
do think that the regime that's in charge there is
finally maybe the one that could get it right for them.
But you know what, we said the same thing about
(01:08:16):
the Texans the last couple of seasons, and now maybe
the bloom is off the rows on that a little bit.
Speaker 4 (01:08:22):
Yeah, regime, it's tough to talk about him as a
whole when there's such individual parts. I think Liam Cohen
looks to me like a good NFL head coach, definitely
a good offensive mind, and I'd take a really good
choice to try to figure out exactly what they have
with Trevor Lawrence. And while I could appreciate they were
definitely in go for it mode with Gladstone and the
move to get Chakobe Myers. I like some of the
(01:08:43):
things that he did, but the biggest moves are usually
the ones that put you over the top or have
you graded out as I'm not so sure about this guy.
And I can't ignore the draft day deal that they
made for Travis Hunter, and it makes it sound even
worse that he's hurt now, but we've talked about it
so many times long before he missed time and is
on the ir that unless you're elite players, that's who
(01:09:03):
you draft in the top five elite talents, Guys that
are can't miss, guys that are gonna blow you away,
Guys that are gonna change whatever position group they are
in at the next level. And I don't know that
he's ever going to do that as a corner I
don't know that he's ever gonna do that as a
wide receiver. I don't think it's such a great advantage
for them to have one player handling two different spots
(01:09:24):
so they can carry a fifth linebacker or a ninth
defensive back or a fourth tight end. I mean, it's
really a roster gift that you have a player that
can play both ways and he's above average at both.
But I don't want an above average player with the
number two pick in the draft that then costs me
another first round pick in the upcoming draft, which they
(01:09:45):
gave away in order to move up just a couple
of spots to get him. That is a enormous stroke,
a big bold move. But if you land a player
that's a super stud, that's great. I will question for
many years, I'm sure whether they actually did that. Trevor
Lawrence led Jaguars pretty much every single week and this
week even against David's Mills are no different. They're always beatable. Yeah,
(01:10:09):
I don't know what's gonna happen on Sunday, but they
are a beatable team when he's the quarterback.
Speaker 3 (01:10:14):
That's I mean, that kind of really sums it up.
And again going back to what I said about the regime,
which is again that's a very organic fluid thing, because
every regime is for better or for worse. But like
I said, everything else goes according to plant. You have
a great defense, you have receivers, you have a good
(01:10:35):
running game, all that kind of stuff, if you don't
have the guy under center. And Texans fans can obviously
attest to this firsthand knowledge, where are you really in
today's NFL? I just don't think it's the same league
as it was even maybe twenty years ago where you
could get away with the Brad Johnson at quarterback. If
you're Tampa Bay and it doesn't matter because you have
(01:10:57):
an amazing defense and you have that running back and
all that kind of stuff that goes your way, you've
got to have a guy that can fling it with
some like aptitude, not just sort of okay, And I
think that's what Trevor Lawrence is most weeks. All Right,
we will leave it at that. We will come right
back a humongous NFL development that absolutely nobody saw coming.
(01:11:19):
You're not gonna believe what news came down just recently
earlier today. We'll tell you about that when we return.
Speaker 2 (01:11:28):
The eighteen.
Speaker 1 (01:11:29):
On Sports Talk seven ninety, Adam and Adam are so Houston,
and even though they don't smoke, they still have twenty
five lighters on their dresser.
Speaker 3 (01:11:43):
Love it, Mike, Yes, sir. They've got to get paid.
Speaker 1 (01:11:48):
So back to it, guys.
Speaker 3 (01:11:55):
It is the A team. It's Sports Talk seven ninety.
It's Space City Home Network Friday edition of the program.
Coming up at the top of the hour. Iron Eagle
visited with the Matt Thomas Show with Ross earlier today.
We'll play a portion of that conversation. It's going to
be a jam packed weekend. WEX. By the way, wex's
(01:12:17):
in Orlando. I'm here in Houston as he's there with you.
Of h I'll be on the call with Matt Thomas
and Ryan Hollins tonight for the Rockets Spurs game. It's
the start of just a very very busy sports weekend
in Houston and beyond. You know, it was not going
to be a part of broadcasting anything WEX.
Speaker 4 (01:12:35):
Go ahead.
Speaker 3 (01:12:37):
His name's Mark Sanchez.
Speaker 4 (01:12:39):
Yeah, I knew that was coming. One note on the
Rockets tonight Space City Home Network. As they will do
at times throughout the season with so many games snatched
from them via the national networks, they have pre and
postgame coverage going on tonight and they will be at
the arena Vanessa's at the games. We'll provide some postgame
coverage of that over on Space City Home Network, Calvins
and Studio Julius and Studios, So both before and after
(01:13:02):
the game, you can catch coverage over there with them. Obviously, you,
Matt and Ryan have all the coverage right here on
Sports Talk seven ninety. I will get you into the
Rockets launch pad at five thirty and you've got countdown
after that and then we have Rocket Spurs to go on.
We talked about the need or no longer need to
(01:13:23):
say officially, yeah, we're not in the Mark Sanchez business anymore,
signed to Fox Sports, but with the announcement being made
official today that the hiring of Drew Brees is happening
and he's working a game this weekend. It wasn't in
the press release, but when asked about the status of
Mark Sanchez, I do believe a spokesman was was okay
(01:13:46):
sharing the news that yeah, he uh, he's not.
Speaker 3 (01:13:50):
Gonna work, not gonna work here anymore. That so terrible,
I the I mean, what did you just say yesterday?
We assume and don't know necessarily that they have to
say anything. I will say, this is about all they
could have said, since it's still a legal matter. I'm
(01:14:13):
assuming that's why the no further comment at this time,
because he's oh yeah, for sure, Yeah, sure, that's why
that phrasing is there. But yeah, if you thought that
he was just kind of going to roll into another
broadcast booth and just be like, hey, guys, nothing happened.
Speaker 4 (01:14:28):
Hey, what what are you doing here? Mark? I thought
I was assigned to this game. Let me let me
get into touch with one of our bosses. I don't,
I mean, I just don't. Don't put the headset on
just yet. Just hang on a second. Let me let
me see. They made it very clear, according to the statement,
is succinct, as clear, as limited, as unnecessary to revisit
this subject will ever be again. We can confirm that
(01:14:51):
Mark Sanchez is no longer with the network. There will
be no further comment at this time.
Speaker 3 (01:14:56):
It's not quite oh my my key cards not working anymore,
because that's a little different.
Speaker 4 (01:15:02):
So funny that that Hard Knocks clip that you're referring
to is actually the Jets.
Speaker 3 (01:15:06):
Jeez, yeah, did he play did he play anywhere else?
Am I just yeah, after the Jets, he had to
have played it. He had to have other stops.
Speaker 4 (01:15:20):
He did have other stops, but nothing that he did
after leaving the Jets was really any real consequence. He
put on an Eagles jersey, he put on a Cowboys jersey,
he put on a Washington jersey. But he retired before
the Giants would give him a go so he could
run the whole division.
Speaker 3 (01:15:38):
Ah, that's unfortunate. It could have at least gone to
their camp to make it late.
Speaker 4 (01:15:42):
He was a starter for four years with the Jets
after he was drafted, and that was that. He had
a few stints as a backup who did not play
very much for the remainder of his career, which was brief.
Speaker 3 (01:15:53):
I guess, I just and I know this isn't the case.
It sometimes seems like it's just always obvious, because look,
if you're asking me what happened here, the guy has
a drinking problem and it manifests itself in something far
far more serious of a you know, sinister and violent nature.
That's the best way I could give you the cliffs
notes version of what I think happened, based on what
(01:16:15):
we know the facts. The video all that kind of stuff.
But I guess I'm just still and maybe it's because
I don't drink. I don't know what it is. I
feel like if it's to this point where he's doing
the kind of stuff that not only hurts someone else,
gets him in trouble with the law, but also clearly
he's now lost his gig, I feel like we would
(01:16:35):
have seen it coming. And by that I mean we
me and you in the media casually not having a
part of his life at all, would have known more
about this before it got to this point. Because there's
so many other people where that seems to be the case.
You think back to, like like guys like Lenny Dykstra
or Darryl Strawberry. I'm just I'm doing that on purpose.
(01:16:58):
Nothing but Mets, Like I.
Speaker 4 (01:17:00):
Just Mitchell keeck On, uh, Kevin Elster.
Speaker 3 (01:17:04):
There's got to be other guys on that team that
were doing nor Johnson, Yeah, your.
Speaker 4 (01:17:08):
Favorite, Which Mets got in trouble down here in the age?
Speaker 3 (01:17:13):
All of them.
Speaker 4 (01:17:15):
I don't mean in a baseball sense. There was an
actual incident during the mid eighties with the Mets here
in the age, which one was that I think it
was around the time that Roger Clemens and Bayou Mama's
got together. Maybe it was Cooters.
Speaker 3 (01:17:30):
What was it about Houston in the mid eighties that
athletes kept getting in trouble?
Speaker 4 (01:17:33):
James Worthy, James Worthy, I mean.
Speaker 3 (01:17:35):
Good lord. Hey, he got busted with a hooker and
was late to the game. But don't worry. He played
in the second half.
Speaker 4 (01:17:41):
He made it to the game, he played.
Speaker 3 (01:17:44):
And they won. That's how good the Lakers were back then.
What was that eighty six?
Speaker 4 (01:17:49):
Yeah, they were pretty good then, probably one of the
best teams the NBA has ever seen.
Speaker 3 (01:17:52):
That was on purpose. You guys don't.
Speaker 4 (01:17:54):
Toughle and Ron Darling. I think were the Mets that
were fighting in Houston. They fought each other, think or
I don't think they bar it was that bar named Cooters.
They fought some police officers.
Speaker 3 (01:18:06):
Apparently undercover, I would hope, so why because if they're
in uniform, that's even dumber. We're gonna fight these guys
in their police uniforms. Let's see how that goes go.
Speaker 4 (01:18:20):
May have been something involved, you.
Speaker 3 (01:18:22):
Know, same thing that Mark had involved.
Speaker 4 (01:18:25):
I don't know the facts of that case yet, but maybe.
Speaker 3 (01:18:27):
Well he was clearly inebriated, that's like in the police report,
is it not this Mark Sanchez situation.
Speaker 4 (01:18:35):
Uh, I don't remember if that was in the report
or not, because I think we're all into the assumption
something was in his system. I don't know that we
knew the information about what exactly that was.
Speaker 3 (01:18:48):
Well, he's not gonna be on Fox anytime again soon.
Speaker 4 (01:18:52):
Yeah, that's as simple as that we can put it.
And that's not the need for Oh well, it turns
out this is what happened, and that's what happened, and
these weren't the facts that the fact that the involvement
was to the level that it was. It's okay for
Fox to say, Okay, I'm glad he's innocent, and I'm
glad the other person's fine, and I'm glad Mark and
whoever he's cloth was close with can move on with
our life. We're just not going to pay him to
(01:19:13):
work for us anymore. It's totally fine.
Speaker 3 (01:19:15):
Not gonna not gonna work here anymore. Nahena, naja. Yeah.
So oh, and by the way, the whole go ahead.
Speaker 4 (01:19:22):
Before we get to Sam Warren joining us in an hour,
before we get to Iron Eagle joining us at the
top of the hour, as expected, the Texans are going
to be without a lot of players this weekend. Six
players already deemed out, so add four to Kaymi and
c J. Stroud to We already knew they were going
to miss the game. Essentially everybody else who couldn't practice
(01:19:44):
this week isn't available and has already been listed out,
and that includes two offensive linemen. Knew they were gonna
have to make some shuffles, knew that it was not
gonna look like they wanted to, so Davis Mills behind
a very questionable offensive line. Titus out and Eddie and
Grew both out for Sunday's game. Jalen Petrie also out
(01:20:05):
for Sunday's game.
Speaker 3 (01:20:07):
Yikes, all right, good luck Texans. We will discuss that
and has mentioned Iron Eagle. You'll hear from him coming
up next as well.
Speaker 1 (01:20:17):
The A Team on Sports Talk seven ninety two lifelong
Houston sports guys named Adam Talking Your Team. Adam Clinton
and Adam Wexler are the eighteen.
Speaker 3 (01:20:39):
Four o'clock hour underway here on Sports Talks seven ninety
It is a Friday edition of the A Team, which means,
as wex was alluding to before the break, the injury
report comes out, you find out real quick who's not
going to be a part of things between the Jags
and the Texans. And as you heard Wex say just
before the break, in addition to CJ. Stroud, a lot
(01:21:03):
and I mean a lot of key guys out for
the specifically offense. And then Jalen Peatrie with that concussion
that we were talking about this a couple of days ago. Wex,
I just don't remember. He played every snap.
Speaker 4 (01:21:16):
Right, he did. He was one of several Texas defensive
players to not leave the field. But with this particular
issue concussions, it can happen, and the onset of symptoms
may not be present as it happens, or it just
was not discernible enough by anyone to kind of force
(01:21:36):
the player to be evaluated. And I would imagine something
like that happened with Jalen Peatrie maybe feeling symptoms later
in the afternoon overnight Monday or Tuesday morning. And obviously
this is where we are now, and he was not
practicing throughout the week. We talked about one other part
of the roster, the secondary, specifically, you know, Elijah Hussey
was activated because his practice window would have closed otherwise
(01:22:00):
would have been done for the year had they not
activatedim earlier this week and then they released him because
they're so strapped from a roster standpoint. The hope is
that he clears through waivers and potentially gets brought back
to the practice squad. But I can guarantee you they'll
be elevating multiple players the maximum they're available to them
off of the practice squad, and it's going to have
(01:22:20):
to come in that area there. Probably it's either Jalen
Mills or Miles Bryant that I think will have to
be activated for this game. Their secondary is very thin otherwise,
and the tight end position is a very similar spot.
Harrison Bryant is not out listed as a full participant today,
but is listed as questionable. He did not practice prior
to today at all during the week, and that's just
(01:22:42):
tight end number two twenty snaps for him last week.
Dalton Schultz is taking his full complement of snaps, even
though he's continuing to practice and play through a knee
and shoulder issues. They only have one other tight end
among their entire roster and practice squad, and he's never
played an NFL game before. They did not add another
tight end the practice squad. They actually released one, Dalton Keene,
(01:23:02):
who they had just signed the week prior. Those two
positions specifically are very much hurting going into this game,
so I don't know if it prevents them some certain
things they want to do offensively, personnel packages. Hopefully Harrison
Bryant can play and make it through however many snaps
they want from him, And like I mentioned at the
end of last segment, they had to do it in
(01:23:23):
Week one when Ingram unfortunately was hurt between the end
of preseason and before the start of their first game.
So they shuffle the whole offensive line around. Tay Ersree
starts at right tackle, Titus Howard slides inside Cleveland Brown's
reserve injured tackle Cam Robinson started for the Texans that
day and really hasn't ever played since. Really anybody, that's
(01:23:46):
kind of what they're going to have to do in
this game. Their right tackle is out ed, Ingram is out,
the rotation between Tomlinson and Scruggs probably has to be scrapped, thankfully,
and I've wondered it aloud for multiple weeks. Don't you
have to put Jarrett Patterson on the field. Doesn't he
have to play one of the guard positions when you're
clearly unhappy with the two that have I don't think
(01:24:09):
it's his best position. I don't think he has a
ton of reps there. It's hard for me to say
what kind of look they gave him during the week
to do that, because we're just not out there for
enough of practice. But I'll say now, I won't be
shocked if that's one of the avenues that we see
them trotting out there. And it also means Blake Fisher
is starting place. Fisher's not coming onto the field as
(01:24:29):
a sixth offensive lineman. He's gonna be the starting right tackle,
Tayris Who's gonna be the starting left tackle, And you
probably see both Jarrett Kingston and Trent Brown active for
the first time all year.
Speaker 3 (01:24:42):
Well in that vein, do you think the Eagle family
is a big fan of the Houston area.
Speaker 4 (01:24:50):
Oh, without a doubt.
Speaker 3 (01:24:51):
They'd have to be.
Speaker 4 (01:24:52):
Well, they absolutely have to be. Iron Eagle, who does
lots of NBA work both for an individual team and
national and is one of the voices of CBS Sports
on the football side, also has an additional Houston connection
because he's having a blast this year working alongside JJ
Watt and the Booth.
Speaker 3 (01:25:10):
Yes, yes, And he's calling both tonight's Rockets Spurs game
over on Prime and then he's gonna call the Rockets
or the Texans Jaguars game on Sunday. So he's getting
very familiar with the Texas area and specifically that area
involving Houston sports teams. And he joined the Matt Thomas
Show with Ross earlier today. First topic you're going to
(01:25:32):
hear about here is indeed those very San Antonio Spurs
with that seven foot nine or whatever he is these days,
Victor woman Yama.
Speaker 8 (01:25:41):
Let me approach it from two perspectives. First perspective is
just a pure basketball perspective. He is just such a
transcendent talent, and in year three of his career, as
you turn on the TV or if you're fortunate enough
to see him in person, imagine that this is what
(01:26:02):
a lot of people felt when Wilt Chamberlain first started
playing in the NBA. There have been other great players,
there have been people that have had Hall of Fame
careers that have played the same position, but he's just
doing it differently. There's something in his movements, there's something
in his body type that is just incredibly unique. So
(01:26:25):
from a basketball standpoint, it's scary for the rest of
the NBA. This guy is getting better with each time
you see him, he unleashes something a little bit new,
and that leads to the second perspective, which is the
play by play perspective. Matt, You can relate to this
when you're calling a game. The goal is to be
on top of the action, and you never want to
(01:26:47):
be the one that misses something that's special or different
in the moment because you're looking down at your notes
or you're focused on the wrong thing and your priorities
get out of whack. Every time this guy touches the ball,
there's a chance he's going to do something that you
just haven't seen before. And a lot of it has
to do, in a subtle manner that the angle in
(01:27:09):
which he takes the fact that we've grown so accustomed
to someone going on the baseline, someone his size, and
you recognize, well, he only has a couple options. Well,
not this guy. He can take the baseline and what
you would never see as a reverse layup being a possibility.
He cannot just reverse layup it. He could dunk it
(01:27:30):
with the offhand so it really forces you to be
on your p's and q's as an announcer. And I'm
just excited. I think you know, this rivalry is really
hitting a fevered pitch. With four meetings this year, first
one Emirates NBA Cup. I just think every game there's
going to be a lot of anticipation. When the Rockets
(01:27:51):
play the Spurs this year.
Speaker 12 (01:27:53):
I will call tonight's game Rockets and Spurs and Amazon
Primeal'll have it for you here on seven ninety with
a six thirty tip time, and then sun it will
be a lot of prep for iron for you, for
Logan Cook and Tommy Townshend conversation on that broadcast of
the Texans and Jaguars.
Speaker 3 (01:28:09):
So please have your stuff together.
Speaker 12 (01:28:11):
And I don't want to get into a super deep
dive of because look, the Texans fan know they're beat up,
backup quarterback, lots of injuries, disappointment.
Speaker 4 (01:28:18):
Let me get to your new partner.
Speaker 12 (01:28:20):
We knew JJ was headed for television stardom and whatever
ole he was going to be, and look, he reminds
me of your counterpart at your other network. In Greg
Olsen Studies, the game learns the game trying to become
a better broadcaster beyond being an X football player. I
think your chemistry has been amazing. But take us through
what you can give to a guy like JJ who's
(01:28:41):
obviously very well recognized but still has to learn the
nuances of calling a sport on television week two week.
Speaker 8 (01:28:47):
Yeah, my whole approach when it comes to working with
new partners has always been the same. Make them feel comfortable.
Comfortable off the air usually translates to being comfortable on
the air. Let them know that I'm going to you
with them every step of the way. I'm not going
to put them in a bad position. I'm not going
to lead them down a road that has no exit
(01:29:08):
strategy on the air. I'm going to go to those
places with them alongside them, and that goes a long way. Obviously,
if you can form a friendship, that helps greatly. JJ
came to the table equipped with so many skills to
be really good at this. The fact of the matter
(01:29:28):
is he's incredibly comfortable on television. So that's the first
thing that is either innate to you or not innate.
I don't know if I've worked with anybody just from
an on camera point of view that shows no hesitation whatsoever,
in whatever direction we have to go in at any moment.
And then the other part, which you don't know about
(01:29:50):
someone until you're really around them every day. He's such
a thorough person. He thinks things through. He has great questions,
so if he doesn't know something, he will ask you.
And he's not afraid to ask you. Some people would
be afraid to ask because they don't want to come
across as not knowing what they're supposed to know. He
(01:30:10):
wants to learn it. His football knowledge is through the roof.
His humor is elite. His self deprecation quotient, which I
find to be highly likable and relatable, is also excellent.
And then he's got great instincts. So you know, we
just hit the ground running. It was really easy, which
(01:30:34):
is not normally the case in television. Usually it takes
a little time. By week one, week two, week three,
it felt like we had been working together for ten years.
Speaker 3 (01:30:44):
And it shows. I mean, it feels like it. That's
the best duos when it sounds like they have been
working together that long. He is such a pros pro
and I'm talking about Ian and I'm partial to Noah,
his son, which by the way, so Ian's doing prime
NBA games and Noah's doing NBC slash Peacock correct. Yep,
(01:31:08):
all right, they're everywhere, man. The Eagle family is all
up on your TV these days.
Speaker 4 (01:31:16):
No very good at their jobs, and Noah, for the
age that he's at, very good, do some different things
with their broadcast. We'll talk more about that, hopefully as
we get some of them on with us over the
course of the upcoming and continuing NBA season. But you know,
pretty entertaining stuff for him to be Rockets Spurs and
(01:31:37):
then Jaguars Texas, even if it is a Mills v.
Lawrence game.
Speaker 3 (01:31:42):
It's underwhelming by way of the quarterback matchup, for sure.
But I'm not even going to tell you the the
caption of one of the memes I was sent about
that particularly quarterback matchup. If we were off the air,
I would, but it's.
Speaker 4 (01:31:56):
From the Chris Long podcast.
Speaker 3 (01:31:58):
No, No, it's it's different. I'll just I'll just leave it.
Speaker 4 (01:32:02):
At that, above the shoulders and below the helmet.
Speaker 3 (01:32:04):
That would be the subject. Yep, that's definitely so, all right.
Why do Prince Harry and his obnoxious wife continue to
step in it everywhere they go and what does that
have to do with sports? I'll explain next.
Speaker 1 (01:32:21):
The eighteen on Sports Talk seven ninety. The A Team
continues on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 3 (01:32:36):
It is the A Team Sports Talk seven nineties, Space
City Home Network Friday edition of the program ac Here
in Studio WEX is in Orlando, Florida. So in that
vein earlier, you know, I come in here to the studio,
WEX usually puts whatever on the monitoring here that actually
(01:33:00):
has programming, whatever channel.
Speaker 4 (01:33:02):
It is, I turn off the Spanish leguage soccer that's
usually on.
Speaker 3 (01:33:07):
Well, the language doesn't really matter, does it. We don't
hear it.
Speaker 4 (01:33:10):
No, but I'm I'm I'm just noting that if it's on,
he will find it.
Speaker 3 (01:33:15):
He being Ross. Yeah, it's not Matt Thomas that puts
that on soccer.
Speaker 5 (01:33:20):
No.
Speaker 3 (01:33:20):
So anyways, guess what was on today since you weren't here.
Speaker 4 (01:33:25):
Well, Matt's and San Antonio Ross was there alone, watching
whatever you wanted and staring at it from the seat
he sits in an art studio.
Speaker 3 (01:33:32):
But it was not soccer. There's your hint.
Speaker 4 (01:33:35):
Was it sports? Yes, NHL Network?
Speaker 3 (01:33:42):
No, and no more guesses as as thrilling as it
was the first time around, I got to relive Game
seven between the Dodgers and the Blue Jays.
Speaker 4 (01:33:54):
Yuck.
Speaker 3 (01:33:55):
Well, I didn't look at you know how I the
way I sit and how I'm faced here in the studio,
I have to make a ninety degree turn to my
left to even see what's on the monitor. So I
just ignored it, and was also too lazy to change it,
so I just left it there. But I bring that
up for a reason. Are you aware that Prince Harry
(01:34:16):
and what's his wife's name again? She used to be
an actress. She doesn't do anything now, Oh Megan, Megan
Markle right? Is that her?
Speaker 4 (01:34:25):
I mean, yes, I can you set this up last segment?
So just feel free to continue. I will, so, says
Prince Harry and his wife on the document that we
used to run through our show together. Yeah, you added
a word before wife and the tees, so I knew
where this was headed. Yet I do not know the story.
Speaker 3 (01:34:46):
Oh yeah, she's she's she's obnoxious, so they well, it's
actually him. I'm not sure if she was there or not.
I think she was. They went to Toronto for events
marking the end of World War One and ended up
offending a bunch of Canadians. Can I can give you
(01:35:07):
one guess as to why he would have offended a
bunch of Canadians. And your hint is that c. J.
Stroud has dealt with the very same thing this season.
Speaker 4 (01:35:17):
I'm wont even I'm not even guessing.
Speaker 3 (01:35:19):
He wore the wrong hat. WEX.
Speaker 4 (01:35:22):
So Prince Harry was there for totally other reasons. Yep,
Blue Jays were in the World Series. I do remember
seeing him, and yes, I believe he's with his wife.
What was on his head, well, red hair.
Speaker 3 (01:35:32):
Speaking to a military charity on Thursday night, the Duke
of Sussex sought to once again address the quote blue
hatted elephant in the room. He was referring to his
widely ridiculed choice to wear a Dodgers cap at a
World Series game in LA against the Blue Jays. It
(01:35:56):
was seen as a major snub in Canada, a brig
Bridish Commonwealth Nations. I'm sure you were aware of already, WEX.
Speaker 4 (01:36:03):
This was a baseball game played in Los Angeles. Yeah,
and he wore a Los Angeles Dodgers hat at a
Los Angeles Dodgers game.
Speaker 3 (01:36:13):
Yep, okay, but it's a British Commonwealth Nation. Wex his
father what is California? No Canada?
Speaker 4 (01:36:21):
Oh? Where the game wasn't being played?
Speaker 3 (01:36:23):
That one where his father, King Charles the Third is
of course the head of state. He was blasted on
social media in the Great White North. He apologized and
tried to put a humorous spin on the incident that
he referred to his hat gate quote when you're missing
a lot of hair on top and you're sitting under floodlights,
(01:36:45):
you'll take any hat that's available. And then he put
on a Blue Jays cap.
Speaker 4 (01:36:51):
So he went to the game and didn't realize that
she's this little hair I've got on top of my head.
It's not gonna when I'm under all the lights. Just
you over there, Yeah, you're with my party. Go fetch
me a hat. I don't care what it is. I
will wear it is that what he's trying to portray.
Speaker 3 (01:37:10):
That's what he's trying to portray.
Speaker 4 (01:37:12):
But you don't, you're not buying it.
Speaker 3 (01:37:14):
Well, I just think that this is even more lame
than Texans fans getting so bent out of shape about CJ. Stroud,
because I think it's even lesser of it, like, at
least with CJ. Stroud He wore a Mariner's cap while
they were playing the Mariners that weekend series where they
ended up sweeping the Astros and losing the division. That
to me is I think way worse than random Prince
(01:37:38):
Harry putting on a Dodger's hat at a Dodger's game
during the World Series in Los Angeles?
Speaker 4 (01:37:44):
Right, Like, did he take it off of his head
and like swinging around in the air when the Dodgers scored?
Was he saying, go, show, hey go. Does anything like
that happen?
Speaker 3 (01:37:54):
I don't think he's ever done anither of those two
types of activities in his life.
Speaker 4 (01:37:58):
I'm trying to poke more fun at this as you are,
so as to not have to once again say it's
totally fine for people to use their pants, shoes, socks, briches, shirts, ties, ascots, hats, beanies,
or any other piece of clothing however they'd like to
(01:38:20):
be fashionable. Just because you're wearing a hat that represents
a professional sports organization doesn't mean you have created a controversy.
Speaker 3 (01:38:30):
Well, it was perceived by some as a test of
his allegiance between his birthplace and his adopted home in
the US see Harry and his wife Megan stepped down
from royal duties in twenty twenty and moved to Canada
briefly before settling in California. And oh, by the way,
(01:38:52):
they also made Dodgers fans mad too, in case you
were wondering, both sets of fans were mad for dumb reasons.
The reason that fans were upset is because when this happened,
which was Game four, you know, the middle three games
were played in Los Angeles. Obviously when this game happened,
they attended Game four and they were in the first row,
(01:39:12):
while Nice Sandy Kofax and Magic Johnson huge parts of
Dodger lore, both of them, Magic, we're sitting in a
second row, huge.
Speaker 4 (01:39:24):
Parts of Los Angeles lore and now a part owner.
Speaker 3 (01:39:27):
But he's part owner of every team and he's out
there celebrating like he did something. What's the percentage one?
Less than one?
Speaker 4 (01:39:37):
Owners are totally fine to do that, and he is
a We gotta admit he's a little bit different. It's
not just about his monetary contributions to his minority ownership
of some of these teams that he's a part of.
Speaker 3 (01:39:49):
It's about his Twitter contributions.
Speaker 4 (01:39:51):
Well, that's for us. But he is a somebody. Most
of the owners aren't anybody. They just have a lot
of money. I mean, did you he matters who he
is and around these teams like you want to go,
Hey man, we've got an event coming up. Can one
of our minority owners make it to our big money guy? Can't?
Speaker 3 (01:40:08):
Hmmm?
Speaker 4 (01:40:09):
Who do we think would get people interested in this?
Who do you think people might want to see? It's
not the other owners?
Speaker 3 (01:40:14):
Tim, his tweet from the day of the parade, is
so pathetic. Had a great time today in my twelfth
championship parade. What made it so special is the fact
that I got to enjoy it with my beautiful wife,
Cookie and my two grandchildren, Gigi and Avery. We were
(01:40:35):
hanging out with Dodger Great and World Series MVP pitcher
Yoshinobu Yamamoto. Very good, thank you, thank you, he continues
to all of Dodger Nation, the hundreds of thousands of
fans that showed up at the parade, the fifty two
thousand that came and sold out Dodger Stadium, and everyone
(01:40:58):
else who showed up and made their present and felt
thank you for saluting the players. Manager Dave Roberts and
the entire ownership group, which, of course, as you mentioned,
WEX he's a part of Thank you, Thank You, Thank you.
His twelfth championship parade.
Speaker 4 (01:41:13):
Where's the pathetic part? I loved every word of that.
You would he acted like hiving everybody props? Dude?
Speaker 3 (01:41:21):
How many Dodgers games do you think he went to
this year that weren't playoff games?
Speaker 4 (01:41:25):
He's busy. He always with what you said, LAFC.
Speaker 3 (01:41:30):
Yes, my soccer club. LAFC advances to the next round
of the MLS playoffs. I bet you can't wait for
his thirteenth championship parade.
Speaker 4 (01:41:38):
You know what an idiot and Cookie have like date
night every once in a while. He's busy.
Speaker 3 (01:41:43):
How do you think he asks her out for date night? Hello? Cookie,
you are my wife and we have some spare time tonight.
Would you like to accompany me to dinner and a
movie before we returned to the house we home owned together.
Speaker 4 (01:41:57):
You're confusing him with another elite.
Speaker 3 (01:41:59):
Athlete, Tiger, Yes, Tiger. I don't think Tiger approached women
that way. I think different approach. He got her, it's
not all he got and he lost her. Yeah, well
she took a golf club to his vehicle allegedly. No,
it happened. It's a fact. It's in the police report.
(01:42:22):
All you just have to always go back to the
police report. Wex you always go there for the facts. Hey,
speaking of facts, we never steer you wrong. In the
next segment, every Friday around this time, especially you and
especially me when it comes to college picks, Stone cold
Locks are next.
Speaker 1 (01:42:40):
The A team on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 3 (01:42:45):
S.
Speaker 6 (01:42:47):
Hey, listen to Rockets Radio or your a smart device
just asks play.
Speaker 3 (01:42:54):
Sports Dock seven ninety on iHeart Radio.
Speaker 13 (01:42:59):
Remember that magic eight ball A nice little shaken Look
at this I'm getting late tonight.
Speaker 4 (01:43:07):
Guys giving it to you.
Speaker 13 (01:43:09):
You can trust whatever it said, or you could trust
these two guys named Adam.
Speaker 1 (01:43:15):
It's a crap shoot either way. But these are your
stone cold.
Speaker 3 (01:43:22):
Locks, all right. There you have it. The intro is
in That means we can officially begin Stone Cold Locks
of the Week, this time via long distance with Adam,
Wesler and Orlando.
Speaker 4 (01:43:43):
We've been doing this for several years, our signature segment
each and every Friday during football season. I don't believe
without eliciting the work of the Westley Research team. This
has ever happened.
Speaker 3 (01:43:53):
Before, by the way, they've been lazy lately.
Speaker 4 (01:43:56):
It's school's back in session. You know, there's a lot
of stuff going on. Okay, I don't believe we've ever
had a perfect week followed by a perfectly awful week,
which I was able to put together. The last two
weeks I was closed. Two weeks ago, I went five
and zero, and this week I went oh and five.
(01:44:16):
For as great as we had as a trio performed
the last two weeks ten out of fifteen picks correct,
followed by eleven out of fifteen picks correct, followed by
our worst week ever this season. We got four games right.
We missed eleven of our picks, some of which were identical.
All three of the picks on Vandy Texas thanks to
(01:44:39):
Vandy going berserk in the final few minutes of that game.
Missed on Broncos Texans because the Texans ate the end
zone playing the over. Cole got that one right. He
got three of our four wins. We got one of
our four wins. So it sends us into this week
and Cole, the good person that he is, was kind
enough to offer up his selections before his departure. I'll
(01:45:03):
give those two you here holding onto the Text's pick
for last or college football game of the week, of course,
is BYU and Texas Tech. A matchup of two teams
in the playoffs, a matchup of the two teams at
the top of the Big Twelve, a matchup of two
teams that are right next to each other in the standings,
but a matchup that says Texas Tech at home is
(01:45:25):
an eleven and a half point favorite against BYU, and
none of us wanted to play that. He's playing the
under at fifty one and a half. His run through
the rest of college football, as per usual, will slide
into the sec A. Mississippi State hosting Georgia thinks Georgia
is gonna win by ten or more. They're minus nine
and a half. He's got those Bulldogs in that game. Oregon.
(01:45:49):
A touchdown better than Iowa is what he will need
to claim that game. There are six and a half
point favorites on the road at Iowa and another team
looking towards the playoffs, Texas A and M in Missouri.
Ironically enough, I picked none of these three games and
liked all three of them exactly the way that he
did so naturally, he'll get him right in the games
(01:46:09):
I went with will be wrong. But Texas A and
M continuing to play ranked teams. We knew this would
likely be the case, even though they're all playing each other,
but their schedule looked very, very difficult down the stretch
after they had already put themselves in tremendous position to
be not only a playoff team, but a possible contender
for the SEC Championship. They've got Missouri, They're on the road.
(01:46:31):
He'll play the under at forty eight and a half.
I think that's a pretty good number. I think Texas
A and M will win that game, and probably easily,
but I don't know that they will get beyond that
forty eight and a half number. What do you got
for your four spots?
Speaker 3 (01:46:45):
All right? I too will be taking the under on
the BYU Texas Tech matchup. I I realized when I
was looking over my picks for most of the year,
only twice have the Dallas Cowboys failed me in picking
their over under this year, and I've picked the over
(01:47:08):
every single time. I had to go way back too,
but they're not available this week, so I had to, like,
you know, work but I'm looking at Patriots at Bucks
with an over under a forty eight and a half
with those two quarterbacks involved, and I know that the
Bucks have been banged up, especially from a receiver standpoint.
(01:47:28):
I just even at forty eight and a half, I'm
like slamming the over on that game. So I am
taking the over on Patriots at Bucks. I'm doing the
same for Lions at Commis, even though I think there's
definitely some injuries at play in that matchup as well.
But I don't do this very often. I'm usually more
of an over guy. Rams forty nine ers forty nine
(01:47:49):
and a half screams like they're not going to be
able to get over that, So I'm taking the under
on Rams at forty nine ers.
Speaker 4 (01:47:57):
Well, the mac Jones experience continues. They made that official
earlier today. He's getting another start. They're not sure if
rock Perty will be the number two quarterback for their
game this weekend, but getting closer to his return. But
we're more than halfway through the season and mac Jones
has been out there almost the entire season already. I
will take the opposite in BYU Texas Tech. Just happen
(01:48:20):
to be that way. Not like I'm trying to win
a game that y'all will miss or vice versa. Just
felt like the offense will be there because Texas Tech,
even if they don't score early, it just seems like
as the game wears on, they often wear down their
opponents and start to pile up points. It was too
big of a number for me to play them to cover,
and I just didn't feel right to going the other way.
So I'll take the over in BYU Texas Tech. I
(01:48:42):
will take the Eagles on the road as underdogs at
plus one and a half at the Packers. I'll think
the Charters at home as field goal favorites. Hopefully their
offensive line holds up against a Steelers team that might
have a renewed sense of confidence after what they did
a week ago to as Colts. But I'll take the
Chargers minus three. And it's always been available should anyone
(01:49:06):
have wanted to do this, But for the first time
this year, I'm playing the Texans game two ways. I'm
taking the Texans to cover as underdogs. If you were
listening yesterday and the day before, Texans were favored, and
the word as to whom all the players that will
be out for the Texans, most notably their quarterback. It
(01:49:26):
has finally flipped. The Texans are not favored. They're one
and a half point underdogs at home. I think somebody
on this show that's in studio today you said you're
feeling better and better about the Texans just winning this game. Well,
if they win the game, they obviously cover as dogs.
So I'm playing the Texans at plus one and a
half and for our must pick Texans pick doesn't really
(01:49:49):
matter which one is which. But I'm also playing the
over at a pathetically low thirty seven and a half.
Speaker 3 (01:49:55):
How bad is it that I'm taking the under on
thirty seven and a half? How bad are things not
just for the Texans who are missing what five starters
and six players overall? I mean, that just shows my
lack of confidence in the Jaguars as well. This was
a seventeen to ten game last time these two teams played,
(01:50:16):
and that was with CJ. Stroud and with I believe
all of the players that the Texans will be missing tomorrow,
I mean on Sunday. I don't think any of those
players were out the first time around. No, I believe
that is accurately, and they managed twenty seven points between
the two of them. But you're telling me that they're
going to get more than thirty seven and a half
points this time. Uh, I talk you out of it.
Speaker 4 (01:50:39):
That's that's what I'm telling you. Okay, that's what's gonna happen.
Absolutely no question about it. Coles with you as per usual.
You guys seem to stick together on that stuff.
Speaker 3 (01:50:48):
I don't even think, well, I'm just an over under guy.
Speaker 4 (01:50:51):
Separately, none of these picks are made with knowledge of
anybody else's picks.
Speaker 3 (01:50:54):
Yeah, I don't call him up. I don't text him.
I certainly don't call him up. I try not to
call anybody if I can avoid it. Then I don't
want you calling me either. I don't want to talk
on the phone.
Speaker 4 (01:51:03):
I have your number.
Speaker 3 (01:51:04):
Don't call me. If you call me, it better be
for something good.
Speaker 4 (01:51:09):
How about don't pick up?
Speaker 3 (01:51:10):
Well, yeah, I do that a lot with a lot
of people. Carl Screener, Well, it's the name is right there.
I know if I want to talk to you or not,
and if I don't.
Speaker 4 (01:51:19):
Probably doesn't, probably doesn't even say my name. When then
it shows up, try something else in there.
Speaker 3 (01:51:23):
It does. It's a nice picture. Of us at NRG
Stadium's practice field too neat Okay, we come back to
wind down the four o'clock hour next and when we do,
oh boy, money and attendance and all kinds of stuff
causing problems for the four letter Network.
Speaker 1 (01:51:45):
The a t on Sports Talk seven ninety the third
Coast Coast, the only time where.
Speaker 3 (01:51:57):
Being third is actually right where we.
Speaker 8 (01:52:00):
On to be.
Speaker 3 (01:52:00):
You'll be their home, back.
Speaker 1 (01:52:02):
To our home grown Adams. The eighty fine Sports Talk
seven ninety.
Speaker 3 (01:52:13):
Final segment of the four o'clock hour here on the
eighteen Sports Talks seven to ninety Space City Home Network
ac here in studio Adam Wexler out in Orlando. We
got Josh c along for the ride today before we
jump into just a bunch of it's just a it's
more modern day sports broadcasting mess. That's how I would
(01:52:36):
describe it. I can't remember, and Josh asked me this
during one of the breaks wex did we mention that
Brian Thomas Junior is out for the Jags.
Speaker 4 (01:52:42):
Well, we were talking with me as she mentioned that
he was not going to play. We had talked to
Dimitrius Harvey earlier this week and it seemed like that
was the direction it was headed. He had a different
injury going into their last game and then now suffered
the ankle injury. He is in fact out for this
game this weekend. Parker Washington's taking on a bigger role. Obviously.
It almost forces Jacoby Myers to take on some sort
(01:53:06):
of role, even though he's barely been there. I wouldn't
be surprised at all to see him much more involved
than maybe what was originally anticipated, but it is something
that they'll have to deal with. Essentially, the two guys
that began the years wide receiver one and wide receiver two,
Travis Hunter being the other, neither of them are available
for Trevor Lawrence.
Speaker 3 (01:53:24):
Yeah, that's when you talk about Jacoby Myers being, you know,
just getting there. I always think that's I get it
from the standpoint of, you know, playbooks, getting acclimated with
a new quarterback like all that kind of stuff. It's
not the NBA, it's not Major League Baseball, where it's
you know, a new pitcher you acquired via trade and
(01:53:44):
just put him in the starting rotation. I get it.
It's a little different. But I guess I'm just expecting
more of these guys because there's such world class athletes,
especially in a case like this, get out there help
your team win. This is a big, big game for them,
and they're thin at your position. So I kind of
(01:54:05):
tend to agree with you. I would actually not even hope.
I would expect to see something of that nature.
Speaker 4 (01:54:10):
Yeah, I mean his snap count is almost a given.
He's going to be on the field. There's only so
much they have behind him that they can force him
off the field even if they wanted to. But they
really need and I don't know if Washington can help
with this. I think he can for as long as
he's been there, and they change their offense anyway for
this first season with Liam Cohen. But he's gonna need
somebody out there on the field with him during plays,
(01:54:32):
after they break the huddle, as they go to there
wherever they're supposed to line up, to help probably remind
him you're doing this. He's gonna be looking for you here.
You need to make sure to like anything he can
get extra while he's out there, somebody's gonna have to
help provide that for him. Crash course will happen. Coaches
will have him prepared, They will simplify things for him,
and I think same thing for Lawrence less Of. I
(01:54:55):
hope my receiver sees the same thing I do. And
thus here's where he's going to be versus run this
route and hopefully if I get through the progressions to
you and you're open, here comes the football. But he's
good talent. It's why it's pretty obvious because they were
not certain on Thomas's availability when they made this trade.
This was a going for it type of move. Jacksonville's
(01:55:16):
five and three Myers could have been had by a
number of different teams looking for wide receiver help. You
know where he he'd ended up going to from to
the Seattle Seahawks. These were the two receivers that probably
six or seven teams were all looking to add, and
Jacksonville obviously had the assets to do it. They traded
two of their thirteen twenty twenty six draft picks to
(01:55:37):
land Myers. Now they have eleven, they'll be okay, that'd
be fine. None in the first round, though, that's what
the Travis Hunter price was.
Speaker 3 (01:55:45):
Well, I you know that doesn't You don't have to
be successful to you do you don't have to have
a first round pick to be successful. Just to ask
Nick Cassario, because look at what he did with his
first pick. Ever, he didn't have a first rounder, and
now that guy started this weekend. See it all worked
out tremendous. See what I did there.
Speaker 4 (01:56:04):
He's starting a game that matters for Nick casso for
the first time. I mean, I take it back, I
did not say that very well. He's starting a game
that matters if they win it for the first time ever.
He started games that mattered if they lose many of
times before, including the most important start of his career
to date, when they played well and so did he
(01:56:27):
and they beat the.
Speaker 3 (01:56:28):
Colts to get his replacement Yep, not even here. His replacement,
just the guy that should have been there that just
wasn't on the roster yet. Replacement, Well, replacement makes it
sound like he did something of note beforehand, when really
he was just a filler for a real quarterback. I
hate to say it that way, but that's where it's at.
I mean, that's that's basically the state of the Texans
(01:56:49):
quarterback room right now, because you're having to start him
because the guy you want out there is concussed.
Speaker 4 (01:56:55):
And it could be a bigger deal than that. Let's
say he just plays additional game games. From his standpoint
and the Texans standpoint, well, you're going to see Davis
Mills in on a Dmiko Ryan's team really for the
first time of consequence, Does it impact their decisions about
what they want to do moving forward? I know it
would be a little bit costly to do so if
(01:57:15):
they decided to move off of Mills in the future,
but they might. I hope it's the exact opposite. They'll
be happy that they've already taken care of him in
the future and they like what they see at least
this week, and who knows if there's more.
Speaker 3 (01:57:29):
Yeah, I hate that. If you're the Texans, you need
to win this game for all of those reasons, and
you didn't do yourselves any favors last week by dropping
that game to the Broncos, which was clearly I think
anybody's contest just based on the scoreboard alone.
Speaker 4 (01:57:46):
So the Broncos do almost every single week and the
last night. Yeah, since we have very little time to
talk about it's the perfect time to talk about it. Yeah,
that was disasterball from bo Nicks. Everything about the way
he played quarterback in the game is why he's having
such a he's having a bad season. They're winning a
ton of football games. He's playing badly at quarterback. The
Texans well, except they give him every possible advantage. They've
(01:58:11):
got two competent running backs, They've got a stable of
receivers that are competent. They may not have a Nico Collins,
although Courtland Sutton is out. Yes, I was getting to
the last and final piece of He was sacked once
in the game yesterday. Guess how it happened. He stood
back there and stood back there and stood back there,
and then finally, finally the rush got to him, and
(01:58:31):
he'd never gotten rid of the football. His mechanics are awful,
throwing off platform, missing open players. But they make winning
plays as a team, and they've come up with I mean,
they're on a winning streak.
Speaker 3 (01:58:43):
Despite his play and I got go ahead.
Speaker 4 (01:58:46):
It's unbelievable. They should not be in this situation with
the way they've played. They also do what the Texans don't,
and they do what the Jacksonville Jaguars do when they're
in close games. They win them way more often than not.
Speaker 3 (01:58:58):
Yep, they exclusively on don't the Texans this season, And
you know it's funny they have two receivers that I
think are really reliable. The guy that caught the touchdown
pass last night, he just has been this year. I
picked him up on my fantasy team and every time
(01:59:19):
he outperforms Courtland Sutton and vice versa. That guy's on
my bench. So I bet you can guess who caught
the one touchdown pass on my bench last night.
Speaker 4 (01:59:28):
Well, Courtland Sutton is the guy that every other team
wants to shut down. It's why Derek Stingley Junior was
following him most of the game. He got the touchdown
pass against him and literally nothing else. Certainly actually had
a very good day, but that means Franklin may have
a more advantage tageous matchup throughout many of their games.
I'm sure last night was no different.
Speaker 3 (01:59:45):
Yes, since they were only going to score one touchdown,
of course it went to him. So yeah, that's how
that all went down. I mean, you asked me before
the game yesterday on the show, all right, do we
finally have one of those you know, patented ac hates
Thursday night football games ahead of us? And I said,
oh yeah, without hesitation, not knowing how right I would
(02:00:06):
be though, Like I mean, come on, like, could the
Raiders do something to spice it up? At least we
know bo Nix isn't going to well.
Speaker 4 (02:00:14):
They helped the Broncos get to nineteen more sacks than
any other team in the NFL. There are only nine
teams including the Broncos, with nineteen sacks for the season,
and they have nineteen more sacks than any other team
in the league. Granted they've now played at least one
more game than everybody. Forty six sacks in ten games.
(02:00:35):
They had six last night.
Speaker 3 (02:00:37):
And that'll do it for Raiders Broncos discussion. We got
Sam Warren for Texans discussion.
Speaker 1 (02:00:42):
Next the eighteen on Sports Talk seven ninety. Adam Clinton
and Adam Wexler are the eighteen.
Speaker 14 (02:00:55):
All right, it is the A team Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 3 (02:01:12):
We waved goodbye to Space City Home Network. As wex mentioned,
they are getting ready for Rockets pregame coverage. Matter of fact,
we will do before you know it. Wex will have
you with the Rockets launch pad because it starts earlier.
This is a six thirty tip tonight for Rockets v. Spurs.
So as we get into football at five, we don't
have much time remaining here on the actual program before
(02:01:34):
we are stepping aside for Rockets basketball. Like I said,
WEX will have Rockets launch Pad and then I'll have
the network coverage with Matt and special guest Ryan Hollins
on the call tonight as Rockets and Spurs each with
five and two records clashing in the Alamo City for
(02:01:55):
iten rivalry Supremacy. Adam Wexler, I can't wait for it.
Speaker 4 (02:02:02):
I know I'm in another time zone and the sun
is already down in the stadium, lights are on, It's
pitch black outside. But isn't it five o'clock in Houston?
Speaker 5 (02:02:08):
Well?
Speaker 3 (02:02:09):
Yeah, I had to stall so that we could get
Sam on the phone. That's what I was doing. It
was I was being a professional there.
Speaker 4 (02:02:14):
What am I being?
Speaker 3 (02:02:15):
You're ruining? The Bit's Sam Warren of the Houston Chronicle
joining us here on Sports Talk seven ninety as promised. Yes, Sam,
do you know that if we do the football at
five segment and we're nearly two minutes into the segment
and we haven't talked about football, that wex will actually
break out in hives? Were you aware of that?
Speaker 5 (02:02:35):
I wasn't, But I'm glad that I'm able to curb
that a little bit right now.
Speaker 3 (02:02:39):
Yeah, No, you saved the day. We talked to We
talked to Mia O'Brien earlier about this from the Jag
side of things. Tell us a little bit about these
these comments that tre is Trevor Lawrence saying that Texans
are bullies? Is this a thing?
Speaker 5 (02:02:56):
I mean, he verbalized that for sure, He at least
said that, you know, he didn't say that they're directly bullies,
but that's definitely their strategy and that they want to
bully their opponents. So yeah, I think I think Trevor
said a lot after that first win in Jacksonville, and
I think that that win definitely felt They're meant a
(02:03:16):
lot to the Jaguars, whether it was Florence because of
the disease hit last year or just kind of the
brutalization that they've taken from these Texans at home kind
of over these past few years. So yeah, they definitely
there's definitely a little bit more going into this matchup,
even if the Texans, you know, don't want to to
verbalize it as Trevor's been doing.
Speaker 3 (02:03:38):
I feel like if you're starting quarterback is making comments
like that. Even if the Texans are down five starters
and six players overall and all that kind of stuff.
I just feel like that's and maybe I'm taking it
too extreme. I just feel like that's sending the rest
of your team the wrong message. All these guys bully us.
Speaker 5 (02:03:55):
Well, I mean, he's not wrong over the past few
few years. I mean, I don't think the Texans. I
don't think the Jaguars had beaten the Texans at home
since like twenty seventeen. So it's definitely they definitely feel
like they're feeling themselves right now after that first win
at home, and I think, you know, they're they're putting
(02:04:16):
some some bullets important material out there, and I mean,
with their record, they have a right to do that.
But yeah, it's pretty eye opening for a quarterback to
be out there talking in the media like that.
Speaker 4 (02:04:26):
Well, you wrote an article that did center around a
lot of this stuff about what Trevor Lawrence had to say,
but it also includes some stuff from ziz Al Schaier,
who's obviously at the center of all of this. I
believe you were right there with me last weekend in
the Texans locker and when I asked Dizase for his
thoughts on the play that obviously knocked CJ out of
the game, that had a bunch of CJ's offensive teammates
that were on the field pretty heated about how that
(02:04:47):
happened and the manner in which that slide related hit
took place. I was kind of surprised at some of
the stuff that Aziz said about that in comparison to
his hit and how it was officiated, then how it
was dealt with from the league standpoint, but also interesting
in the comments that you have from him in this
particular article about kind of this this bully nature and
(02:05:08):
then and then maybe the sensitivity of the team on
the other side this week at NRG and the Jaguars.
Speaker 5 (02:05:15):
Yeah, I think a Zins after that first game, he
definitely took took exception to Trevor's comments about kind of
that bullying nature, and I mean, he thinks he kind
of felt that that they're still kind of stuck in
the past a little bit from that hit, and you know,
he definitely started kind of this rivalry so to speak,
with that hit. But uh, yeah, I think the Texans
(02:05:37):
are trying to camp down on the emotions that the
Jaguars are certainly putting out there. And I think the
Texans definitely have them too, but they're not trying to
make too much of this situation.
Speaker 4 (02:05:49):
When you look at the teams, if we do move
past that first game was the two teams that did
not play very well offensively. I think it was because
both defenses did play well. That was the time of
the year where the Jet Wars defense was significantly more impactful.
They had all those turnovers thirteen in the first four weeks.
They've had two in their four games. Sins gave up
twenty nine points to the Raiders were able to win
(02:06:10):
because they supported a two point play in overtime. Their
five and three football team. The Texans are three and five.
Doesn't seem like they've played all that dissimilar football, Like
do you think the Texans should go into this game
even without multiple offensive starters and really truly believe they
can win? And to ask you this, what do you
(02:06:31):
think the Texans five person offensive line is gonna look?
Speaker 6 (02:06:33):
Like?
Speaker 5 (02:06:35):
Yeah, I think all their beliefs has to resigne. Like
if they can, if they believe that they can go
into this game and win, that means that they have
the utmost confidence in Davis Mills. You know, not having
c Hicks Stroud for this game is huge, especially with
all the implications that it has for this Texans season.
So I think that the key for them would be to,
(02:06:57):
you know, give Davis some help and make sure that
the offense kind of is clicking, whether it's in the
run game, giving its giving him ample protection and everything
and that. And you you just brought that up, uh,
you know, with with Ed Ingram and Titus Howard out.
I think that's that's huge for the Texas offensive line
to step up. And what I'm thinking for their offensive line,
(02:07:20):
I think we'll see probably what uh what the substitutions
came in for against the Broncos with with Blake Fisher
stepping in at right tackle too, Scruggs stepping in at
right guard. I don't imagine that they're gonna switch up
their left side of the line at all, but that
those this is a huge spot for those two guys
to step up, especially like the Jaguars pass Rugs hasn't
(02:07:42):
been playing too great in the in the previous games,
but the fact that they were able to get after
CJ in Week three, Trayvon Walker and josh Heinz Island
making a big difference in that game that will definitely
be pivotal with this matchup.
Speaker 3 (02:07:57):
We're talking to Sam Warren of the Houston Ronical. He
covers the Texans and the Texans and Jags obviously kicking
off this weekend. We joke about this, and we have
joked about this, and this was before CJ. Stroud was
concussed and was gonna miss this game. Well, the defense
is going to have to provide some points, but I
feel like that might actually be the case, especially in
(02:08:19):
light of who they're playing the opposing quarterback. I just
feel like there's never been more pressure on a really
I think super Bowl caliber, elite defensive unit to perform
this week, even with the Jalen Peatrees of the world
missing this game.
Speaker 5 (02:08:35):
Yeah, absolutely, I think this. I don't think it's gonna
be a pretty game on Sunday. Whether that's because of
the Texans offense struggling and having a backup quarterback in
or because the Texans defense is going to probably do
some damage against against Trevor in the Daguars offense. But yeah,
I definitely agree that this is a place where the
(02:08:57):
Techans defense, you know, Matt Burt has been tough talking
about just kind of not being able to make those
those opportune plays when they have them, and not being
able to close out games and win games defensively, even
though that they've been playing like a championship level defense,
but making those opportunities happen against the Jaguars where they're
probably going to have more chances with the way that
(02:09:20):
Trevor throws the ball and kind of put some turnovers
out there. So yeah, yeah, definitely with a defensive score
that could be a big key to this game for
the Texans.
Speaker 3 (02:09:30):
Will Anderson Junior has been absolutely sensational. Dealt with that
quad injury this week, but he should be good to
go for Sunday. I think it might have been ESPN
one of these ride ups talking about, you know, the
mid season awards, if they would give them out. I
think he came in second for Defensive Player of the Year.
Is that about where you would put him? Is there
a chance that he could really come on even stronger
(02:09:52):
in the second half and try and get some hardware
for the Texans for the first time in forever on
that side of the football.
Speaker 5 (02:09:59):
Yeah, absolutely. I think Will's having probably his best season
as a pro right now. He's he's really kind of
taken that next step and being able to be that
presence even when I don't think he's forget if he's
leading the team in sacks right now, but I mean
he's taken his game kind of to a next level
so far this season. You know, I think he still
(02:10:20):
wants to get home a little bit more raise those
sack numbers, but I could definitely see him kind of
going on a tear as long as he stays healthy.
That's kind of the biggest thing for him is he's
missed some games in the first you know, couple of
seasons that he's had. You know, he's missed some games,
so ensuring that he's kind of up to full strength,
and that's kind of the only thing that I could
(02:10:41):
see holding him back this year is that he's pretty
much dominated any matchup that he's had, and I definitely
can see him making a push if this Texans team,
you know, makes a push themselves for him to go after,
you know, a Defensive Player of the Year type award.
Speaker 4 (02:10:57):
Six sacks for Will Anderson, for for Daniel Hunter, and
seven for the rest of the bind. Flip it over
to the other side. Davis Mills is making the first
start since CJ. Stroud became a teammate of his obviously
an important game. I think the two of us here
on the show believe this is it. A loss here
mathematically almost makes it impossible for them to pass either
(02:11:18):
of the teams in their division, and that doesn't leave
much else for them to pass to make the postseason.
But Davis Mills was on the field for thirty attempts
three quarters of last week's game. What could be different
in a positive way for Davis Mills in this start?
Speaker 5 (02:11:33):
Yeah, I think obviously for a quarterback to have that
full week of being the starter, getting the reps, kind
of knowing the game plan and having an offense built
around you is definitely gonna help Davis. I think he's
you know, I think he can thrive in this Nick
Kyley offense with getting the ball out quick, kind of
doing the things that this offense is kind of bred upon,
(02:11:58):
with those short passes, kind of the five thousand touch
thing that they've been talking about. So I think he
can function in this offense. He can get it to go.
But I think he's definitely gonna need some help with
whether that's the run game, just getting pushed up front.
You know, when you have a backup quarterback, you need
to have some semblance of a rhythm in the game,
and they just really haven't been able to help anyone
(02:12:21):
by by running the ball over these pass you know,
a couple of losses, whether it's the Seahawks game or
the Broncos game. And I think that's the biggest issue
with with this offense right now, is not being able
to get that rhythm with the running game, getting things
moving forward, kind of setting that up with the passing games.
So that's the biggest key for me offensively is to
(02:12:42):
give give Mills some help, whether that's through easy options,
quick passes, or getting things going down in the run game.
And that's that's what we'll actually let them have some
success against the Jaguars.
Speaker 3 (02:12:54):
I think Sam Warren of the Houston chronically covers the
textans you've got a quick score prediction before we let
you go.
Speaker 5 (02:13:02):
I think I said that the Jaguars will win I
think twenty to fourteen with a backup quarterback in there.
We'll see how it happens. And yeah, I just think
that there's too many office of injuries, whether it's the
right side of the line, the quarterback, and then I
think Jalen Petrie his impact can't be overstated on this
(02:13:26):
defense with the things that he's able to do. So unfortunately,
I think the Technic will end up losing this weekend.
But yeah, they've got a lot of steps to make
for this to be a hill win for them, kind
of going forward with the season.
Speaker 3 (02:13:39):
All right, gett here, Sam, No, we appreciate it. I
appreciate the time. We'll catch up again soon and enjoy
the game this weekend. Thanks as all right. Sam Warren
of the Houston Chronicle covers the Texans a lot to
digest there. As we are one segment away from Rockets pregame, we.
Speaker 4 (02:13:58):

(02:14:41):

famous con pie, maybe some Crown Royal whiskey. It's all back,
so are the savings for the Thanksgiving sale at Spex.
(02:15:24):
The fun starts here.
Speaker 1 (02:15:27):
Adam Clinton, Adam for the eighth.
Speaker 4 (02:15:32):
Hey S just the goals just so folls.
Speaker 3 (02:15:42):
I thought i'd get uh VICKI ready for tonight's matchup.
WEX what do you think?
Speaker 8 (02:15:48):
What?
Speaker 3 (02:15:50):
Because he needs to be pumped up for his game.
Speaker 4 (02:15:52):
I'm pretty certain none of the unofficial nicknames listed on
his basketball reference page are that. He only has three
and none of them are that.
Speaker 3 (02:16:01):
Yeah, but on my on my Victor Wimbin Yama reference page,
he is known as Lady Marmalade. He's French. You get it.
Listen to these lyrics, man, is that right? Yeah? There
was a time in like two thousand and one or
(02:16:22):
two or whatever it was, you could not get away
from this stupid song. The only thing that was good
about this song was the music video.
Speaker 4 (02:16:31):
I'm whatever you say.
Speaker 3 (02:16:33):
It was like Britney Spears videos back then in the
one two era. You just they'd be on and you
just have it on mute and it was fine.
Speaker 4 (02:16:43):
It's an easy way out to have to listen to
music you don't like, like the song we just played.
Speaker 3 (02:16:48):
It feels like that was a passive aggressive comment in
that you were trying to say, why did you play it?
Speaker 4 (02:16:54):
I wouldn't don't, I don't question, I don't question, and
you believe in this instance, you're actually talking to a
real maestro when it comes to bump music.
Speaker 3 (02:17:05):
Well, if I were to ask you hypothetically, or if
you were to be asked, what kind of French reference
type song should we play here for the final segment
of the show, what would you have come back with?
Speaker 4 (02:17:24):
Blank stares. I got no idea, I got nothing.
Speaker 3 (02:17:27):
I can actually see you doing that, and I know
it's gonna give you great surprise that I'm getting text
messages right now from Missy, the ultimate Spurs fan.
Speaker 4 (02:17:36):
Not very happy.
Speaker 3 (02:17:37):
I'm sure the kiddo is awesome. Of course, that's he's
talking about my kids. She's talking about my kid, not
the kiddo being Victor woman Yama, you are insane, Lady Marmalade. Yeah,
you know what. I just came to the decision if
the Rockets beat the Spurs tonight, video tomorrow and guess
what I'm using.
Speaker 4 (02:17:57):
Uh, I don't know.
Speaker 3 (02:18:00):
I'll give you one guess wex you have to.
Speaker 4 (02:18:02):
Play along a Britney Spears song.
Speaker 3 (02:18:04):
I was listening unbelievable Womanizer. Wait what Womanizer? That's a
Britney Spears song, perfect.
Speaker 4 (02:18:16):
Brilliant love It Can't Wait one nineteen one, fourteen and
we'll get our video looking forward to it.
Speaker 3 (02:18:23):
So the Rockets are gonna be slightly off their scoring
binge that they've been on lately. They're not gonna eclipse
the one hundred and twenty point mark, but they're gonna
keep the Spurs to one ten or one fourteen, that's
what you're saying.
Speaker 4 (02:18:35):
There are two teams, are three teams I think overall
that have a better record than the Rockets, and two
of those teams have beating them. That's it. Nobody else
has anybody with the same record or worse than them.
I guess Spurs will be among them. They can handle business.
I like their chances to go into San Antonio and
emerge victorious.
Speaker 3 (02:18:55):
Yes, I just feel like and it's not even to
take anything again away from what the Spurs have done
to start the year. First of all, I was floored
that with all the talent, and this is no joke, like,
no disrespect, This is actually a sign of respect the
amount of talent that has flowed through that organization over
the past quarter century, they had never been five and
(02:19:17):
oh to start a year until this year.
Speaker 4 (02:19:19):
Really, they were probably already resting people the first five games.
Speaker 3 (02:19:23):
Of the year tuche Man, Uncle Dennis and Pop were like,
we're three and oh you're sitting Khi, and so is
everybody else and there was the first loss. So who
you got tonight? For real? You're saying one nineteen one
to fourteen? Is that your actual prediction? Yes? That was
for real? How confident are you?
Speaker 4 (02:19:44):
I don't know. I mean, this segment brought it all
to the forefront. I really had not given it any thought,
not just a little thought or less thought, no thought,
zero thought.
Speaker 3 (02:19:52):
This segment to come up with.
Speaker 4 (02:19:54):
Yes, Lady Marmalade prompted me to say, I need a
score prediction right here, right now, es actually before I
get to go into rockets launch pad in a few minutes.
Speaker 3 (02:20:03):
Why don't you use it again for the launch pad.
Speaker 4 (02:20:05):
For those of you that were listening earlier live from Orlando,
I gave you a score prediction of this game, and
unlike our previous guest, I took the team from Houston.
That's probably what I'll say.
Speaker 3 (02:20:16):
Why you know you've done so well today under the circumstances.
You're on the road.
Speaker 4 (02:20:21):
It's black here. I can't believe we're still on the air.
It feels like it's nine o'clock at night.
Speaker 3 (02:20:27):
That's daylight savings time. In a nutshell, that feeling you
die inside a little bit every day. But you know what,
my wife and I actually prefer this time of year.
I don't know why. I think it's because it means
that the temperature is about to be like bearable as
opposed to surface of the sun. Well days, days that
end at nine o'clock at night, I don't need.
Speaker 4 (02:20:47):
That, Okay, so to I know what your prediction was
from an over understandpoint, but can you make a score
prediction for Sunday for Houston Texans?
Speaker 3 (02:20:57):
Please under thirty seven and a half correct? That was
the number.
Speaker 4 (02:21:01):
That's that's your play, Yes, so yes, work off of that.
Speaker 3 (02:21:05):
I mean we're coming off a tea.
Speaker 4 (02:21:07):
You score twenty six thirty six points, then you're gonna
have to say that they shut out the Jags.
Speaker 3 (02:21:11):
I could see that happening actually, but not the part
about them scoring thirty six points though not even close.
I mean, I'm not even kidding. The first game was
what seventeen ten?
Speaker 4 (02:21:25):
Correct, seventeen ten Jaguars scored late Travis ettn got himself
in the end zone. You had the Nico Collins fumble.
You had a couple of CJ picks, including the one
at the very end of the game in the red.
Speaker 3 (02:21:36):
Zone thirteen ten Texans the worst. It's not my fault, man.
I didn't feel this offensive line and I didn't draft
Davis Mills with my first ever draft shack to either. Well,
it's what happens.
Speaker 4 (02:21:53):
Bad is we think it is on paper and what
they did in the offseason. It is markedly worse in
that they obviously have to work through these injuries. Honestly,
tay Er Series, the team has played so poorly offensively.
I don't think enough people are recognizing he's played very well,
and to say that after last week is pretty important.
That was a legitimate defense, that's a legitimate pass ruts
(02:22:14):
as a legitimate edge rushers elite is being unfair. They're
better than that. You saw what they did last night
to the Raiders offensive line. He's played really, really well
and it has done nothing but get better. It would be
awesome if the other important rookies were in a position
to say the same. At some point, this year is
probably gonna have to play out. Don't think we're gonna
(02:22:34):
see a whole lot of Jalen Knowle this weekend. I
think we're gonna see a lot of snaps for Jayden Higgins,
but I don't know about production. And again they got
the issue at tight end with only one healthy body
in Dalton Schultz, so a little bit concerned there. I
think they're gonna score a lot more than that, as
evidence by me playing the over. I also think the
Texans are gonna I don't know where it comes from
and how they believe in what they have on the field,
(02:22:54):
but if it wasn't Jacksonville, I really don't know Tennessee.
I would predict the victory over, but I don't know
how many other teams certainly left on their schedule. I
predict them to beat, but Jacksonville is one of them.
I think the Texans season doesn't end on Satnday, although
you've already said it ended last Sunday, but I haven't.
Speaker 3 (02:23:12):
It did It did not mathematically it didn't, but in
every other way, for all intents and purposes, it's over.
Guess what. It's also over for Vicky tonight. You know why.
Steven Adams is available, just like we thought he would be.
Speaker 4 (02:23:28):
Looking forward to you and Ryan and Matt bringing us
all the action.
Speaker 3 (02:23:38):
Have you been to that building before? By the way, first.
Speaker 4 (02:23:40):
Time at Akrocher Stadium, and remember there are two of them.
That's the same name they have in Pittsburgh formerly Hinesfield,
so it's called the Bounce House here.
Speaker 3 (02:23:49):
It's really all about Space City.
Speaker 4 (02:23:50):
The staff out here at UCF is going way over
the top in the ninth annual Space Game Orlando and Houston.
Obviously with Space horrific roots. A lot of media information
handed out about what's on tap tonight.
Speaker 3 (02:24:08):
I was actually talking about San Antonio, but that answer
was way better than anything you would have said.
Speaker 4 (02:24:13):
I'm not at Frostbank c I know that.
Speaker 3 (02:24:15):
I was asking if you had been to the Spurs
home before for a game between these two.
Speaker 4 (02:24:22):
I mean, is this a brand new building they're playing
in or just a renamed building.
Speaker 3 (02:24:26):
It's renamed, but they did pass their new playpang.
Speaker 4 (02:24:31):
I think I've been to every building they've played in
back to Hemisphere, I've been to a game there, been
to a game at the Alamo Dome, and been to
the previously named Mobile Device Arena now Frostbank Center.
Speaker 3 (02:24:43):
I've never been even been inside the Alamo Dome, and
I can't believe it for a concert or anything.
Speaker 4 (02:24:48):
I've seen more high school football and basketball at the
Alamodome than the Spurs, but I have seen the Spurs well.
Speaker 3 (02:24:55):
Hopefully the Rockets get that win tonight and drop Victor W.
Benyama's record against them to two and six. We will
have to leave it at that for now. WEX has
a Rockets launch pad right around the corner. I've got
you for the network, and before you know it, six
point thirty tip off between the Rockets and the Spurs.
In the meantime, we'll take a quick time out and
you guys have a good weekend.
