pleasantly surprised by the offense, notmeaning that they did well, but they
weren't as bad as maybe I thoughtthey would have been, especially in light
of who they were playing on thedefensive side of things, and that the
defense, which we all knew wasahead of the offense. That was the
case before Damiko Ryan stepped in thebuilding. I think, so you set
the bar reasonably respectfully low, noteven respectfully, just absolutely just got off

a low, bare minimum. Butthat's I mean. I was to an
extent pleasantly surprised by c J.Strauda company, even though they didn't you

at all. I say it onour show this morning preseason game. Baltimore
treated that game on Sunday like thethird preseason game. How convenient for them
that they had the Texans in townto do so they knew they could do

the New England Patriots, and theykind of got away with it. Obviously

they won. Yeah, if Iwas giving you a great I'd see it
the same way you did, butI'd actually probably split it up into his
two semesters. His first half,his first semester not very good. Well,
heck, if you separated, thefirst quarter was terrible? Was it
on his shoulders was on sloak shoulders. They were running through timeouts like they
were being coached by Nathaniel Hackett.But then they weren't. Then they started

where guys are going to be openmore quickly, where I can get the
ball. He made those tight windowthrows. His very inaccurate long balls early
in the game were much more accurateand where they should be later in the

got to, you know, theTexans offensive line was my biggest concern going
in yesterday. It's part of whyI didn't think that it was as bad
as I thought it was going tobe because he was sacks five times,

last night? Right, So it'slike somewhere but maybe somewhere in between.
But I just feel like you're notgonna get anywhere, and I feel like
the Texans have only really really addressedit one time in the franchise's history,
which was that run they had whereMatt Shop first got here, Like that
offensive line was ridiculous, his ownblocking scheme with Gary Kubiak. But I

just feel like we're always talking aboutthis not just hole, but glaring hole
on the offensive line at any giventime in this in this franchise's history.
They drafted three interior offensive linemen inthe last two drafts, and the only
one of them starting and healthy isthe one who was drafted furthest back in
the draft, Jared Patterson, KenyanGreen. At this point you'd say it
was a mistake, especially when yousee a player. I mean, think

about what their D line would looklike now if if Davis was on it
instead of wrecking shop from Philadelphia.But you still need to fill that hole
somewhere else, and you know youwouldn't have Green, who they thought would
fill that hole. He's obviously outfor the year. And then the others
Jews, Scrugs, who would clearlybe starting. We don't know if he's
a starting caliber player. We justknow he'd be starting on this team.
But heck, Green, Scrugs,fan Questenbury all injured after the start of

training camp. Greg Little brought ininjured during camp and let go. They
didn't address the address. Patterson gotinjured during camp at one point. Like
we Ac and I have talked aboutit multiple times today, this team as
a whole is pretty healthy, butall of their injuries are in the same
spot. They got injuries all overthe offensive line and nowhere else on offense.

And then they've got injuries obviously atthe safety position. Both safeties currently
hurt and we don't know the statusof either one of them for next week.
Let me say one thing about thetunsil thought. You said Trent Williams
best tackle in the NFL, wouldyou agree that left tackle Andrew Thomas and
the Giants is another. I don'tthink he's better than Lammy, but he's
good. So his first game ofthe season was a mirror of Laramie's one

(15:54):
holding call, one false start.Basically, he's the top five tackle and
it happened to him as well.In the Niners case, Trent Williams hey
had one holding call as well.These guys play on the edge. It
is going to happen. They're goingto get caught, or they're going to
just simply do it, or they'regoing to get beat because they're playing the
best player on the other team interms of a rusher every single week.

But that's why they are with whothey are, That's why they get paid
what they get paid. And Ithink I have a harder time saying it
the right way and stand has itand I'll try to use it the rest
of the year. You just gottatake with those plays and forget it.
But I think they had seventy sevensnaps and he had two penalties. You
think I think I feel like whenhe does get the penalties, it's at

the absolute worst time, like yesterday, but he got bailed out. I
just feel like it's an ant andI might be wrong. I might just

Even though it wasn't a touchdown,right great opening drive of the second half,
it was a complete abomination. BobbySlow should be ashamed that he allotted
to look like that. But here'smy point about the offensive line. CJ
was only sacked once in pressure once, or let me say that a quarterback

hit in a sack once in thefirst half. So the offensive line was
decent enough in the first half runningthe football, which is something that I
said was a key that they hadto do to give themselves a chance against
Baltimore. Damian Appears four point threeyards of carry in the first half,
Devin Singletary four airs ten yards.Now that's down at two and a half.

However, combine all right, yougot ten carriages. Not enough,
and I'm certainly uncomfortable with the lackof carries in the end. But I'm
looking at Bobby Slow at going backto the offensive line, it looked like
to me, especially once George Fangot hurt. It looked to me,
and I know that's in the fourthThere was no CounterPunch. It looked like

they were just calling plays on thesheet. They were not systematically structuring and
offense based on the principles of runningthe football. And I know that because
there's no in hell even being downtwo, you don't scrap your offense just
because you're down two possessions. Yeah, the three guys doing something for the
first time that matter, the headcoach the DC happens to be the same

guy, but two different jobs.And Slowick he both had the least to
work with and did the worst job. Yeah, like, okay, so
people staying well, they were gameand they were only averaging three yards of
carrying on the run. Think aboutit as boxing, You just need a
body blow. Guess what running theball also does. It also keeps Baltimore
honest. Guess what it also does. It works better when you run the

ball play. Actually, and here'sthe fourth element of that. It keeps
my quarterback from getting hit. Iseen it yesterday. I was like,
there's no way we're running the ballenough first stands, liking, do we
understand that you're going to get CJ? Hit? And in this town we've
seen quarterbacks get injured by being hit. Why would you do that, Bobby
Slow? If I know them myoffensive line in can't pass block today,

why would I give them more opportunitiesto hit my young quarterback? I just
philosophically need Bobby Slow to help meunderstand. What did the endop with?
I got all these papers ends runningthe ball, running the ball, They're
terrible. No running the ball.They had about the attempts twenty three attempts
running the football. You wanted thirtyfive, I mean minimum thirty, But
again, keep keep in mind theyreally only had eighteen. There were zero

design runs for CJ. The NoahBrown run, but actually that's run.
So you ran the ball eighteen times, and there should never, barring injury,
would ever be a split as closeas eleven carries for you. You're
clear much more talented number one,and you're reserved clear number two Singletary.
Eleven carries for Pierce, seven forSingletary. That's a terrible split between them,

and obviously running the calling only eighteenruns in a seventy plus play game.
Who was just back they had lastyear? They kept getting forced on
Birkehead. Yeah yeah, I'm actuallycall him the model Denado of the running
back. Maybe I'm going to toofast on this, but I've been very
unimpressed by Singletary since he became aTexan. I will take Singletary personally.

I'm still willing to see more.I just don't think they use him enough.
And Damian Pierce is falling you back. He needs more touches to get
it going, and they just didn'tdo it. Now I don't know if
they would discourage because the line wasn'tblocking. I saw some breakdowns when DP
was running left behind Tonzo versus runningright behind and Shaq Mason. Shaq Mason

did not great out will according toPro Football Focus. So I don't know,
I leave those guys over there.But it just looked to me like
come on slow, like it wasjust a sloppy operation. My god,
that first driving and my thing waslike, come on, I had another
day. What was the same game? They were still within the game.

It was a one point game untilabout five or one possession game until about
five minutes in the third. Itwas a two possession game well into the
fourth, and then you allowed yourselfto get out scored in the second half
eighteen to three. Yeah, itwas nine points until five twenty one and

ten seconds and the fourth. Whyare you getting out of your offense?
Yeah? Think about this. Forthose that recall his rookie season and Pep's
only season as the full time ochere, it was Week one and Damian
Pierce was the starter. They restedhim in camp because they wanted him to
be the starter. They already knewthis kid can play, and they went
out of there. Against Indianapolis,he had eleven carries. He played twenty

nine percent of the snaps, byfar his season worst. And I will
know what his second lowest snap countis in his career. It came yesterday.
That's a mistake, inexcusable. Notwhen you're telling me your principle is
demiko from day one to say it, we're gonna run a football and we're
gonna stop the run. How muchof this is completely obliterated just because of

who they're playing next week versus whothey're playing last week. Because the I
mean there are they're favored for starters. I mean the competition level is dropping
significantly. So I mean you mightget your wish, is what I'm saying.
Yeah, I expect them to continueto doing with the things that wex
and I are holding them accountable forwhat they said they wanted to do.

I just think it's a really badidea. And I'll give you another one.
You're telling me that you're in trouble. Your offensive line is not healthy
and it's not helping. Where arethe reverses? Where are the screens.
They got the ball Baltimore dead inthe hands as they Flowers. Why didn't
we see Tank Dale line up inthe backfield up at where I receive a

motion back into the backfield. Wherewas the creativity to get the ball on
the perimeter into the guy the oneguy you have on offense that's explosive.
It made no sense to you wantto show everything in week one? Yeah,
man, yes you got it.You show it. And I think
Stan brings up a point that wasworthy of discussion. You actually caught a
break in watching what Todd Munkin didwith Zay Flowers. That is you're not

gonna do it every game, butthat is one way that Tank Dell certainly
one day's worth of work where youcan see different way. This guy's just
there's things he can do and he'sgoing to prove it at the NFL level.
They let Zay Flowers prove it inhis very first real games conscious effort
and follow suit sometime in the nearFuture's gotta be careful to not take targets

away from Robert Woods, unless Ido want to say that I thought Woods
and Collins for that situation, theylook like two veterans that have been here
and done there, so I willgive them that. Yeah, it wasn't

Wicks just go back pick any repon defense for Baltimore. On offense for
Houston, Baltimore was creeping down.They were not afraid. They would not

they were going to do that though, So that was the same part.
It's when you know that's gonna bethe case before you ever even set foot
on the field. That's that's whereyou're like, you got a white got
along way. Yeah, that's againas much I'm glad that we're analyzing this
game like a real NFL team,but there's some element of it's all brand
new. These are they are clearlylesser talented, no matter how much they've

added they This is one of thefew games on their schedule there maybe four
or five tops where the other teamis just clearly they're just better. Yeah,
there's they can act. They canplay the way they did against Baltimore,
against five other teams on their schedulewithout changing much and beat those teams.
