Speaker 1 (00:02):
Two lifelong Houston sports guys named Adam Talking Your Teams series,
Adam Clinton and Adam Wexler are the A Team A.
Speaker 2 (00:15):
Team What's Up Houston. It is a Monday edition of
the A Team Sports Talks seven to ninety. He is
wex I'm a c. We are simulcast on Sports Space
City Home Network, I should say, and we will take
you up until six o'clock tonight, and then we'll wait
around a little while, and then we'll wait a little
(00:36):
bit longer, and then the Rockets will finally tip off
forty five minutes after they normally do because everybody is
playing in the NBA tonight, because nobody is playing tomorrow
night because it's Election Day.
Speaker 3 (00:46):
Well, one doesn't necessarily tie to the other. And I
did not even realize this myself until earlier. I knew
everybody played today, but what does that have to do
with starting at a seven forty five home game during
the week.
Speaker 2 (00:57):
I don't know if they will, but I heard that
they staggered all the.
Speaker 3 (01:01):
Day time, every fifteen minutes. Starting at six o'clock tonight,
a new NBA game will tip off. The are in
the eighth slot. They will have the eighth tip off
of the night at seven forty five Central. There's three
games tipping off after nine o'clock tonight, nine o'clock, nine
to fifteen, and nine to thirty. It's a thirty team league,
(01:21):
so there are fifteen games to night. Like you said,
nobody tomorrow, so they can all do what we'll be doing,
wondering how the pieces will fit in place at both
the hot Stove league discussion and the NFL trade deadline,
which will come to a conclusion tomorrow. So we'll all
be doing the same thing tomorrow, not watching our NBA games.
The only thing there is to do tomorrow is think
(01:43):
about who won the NFL trade deadline Tomorrow on the
November fifth, the always that first Tuesday every year, and
no it's not always anything they actually moved it.
Speaker 4 (01:55):
This year. We will also be concerned with what is
the team that did not look very good going to
do this weekend?
Speaker 3 (02:01):
That is the Texans. We've gotten a couple of days
to chew on it. The Texans didn't lose this weekend
because they lost on Thursday. The rest of their division
other than the Titans, managed to lose yesterday as per usual,
so the two game cushion plus the tiebreaker remained in
place for the Texans over the Joe Flacco led Indianapolis Colts,
(02:22):
who basically did nothing on offense. Their only touchdown came
with their defense was on the field, so that cannot
be the way they wanted to start things. Doug Peterson
probably saved his job when they won their overseas game,
and now he's back to almost losing it as they
came back to the States and lost again and looked
bad doing it again. They suck, even though the Eagles
tried to let them back into the game and technically
(02:43):
did before putting it away. And of course the Titans
they don't want to be in last place. Now they're
a half game out of last place by allowing the
Patriots to send their game to overtime on the very
last play, Drake May throwing a touchdown pass while being
tackled after scrambling for three and then they beat him
in overtime on a field goal. When Drake May ended
the game with a deep downfield throw to the Titans,
(03:07):
he quarterbacks the Patriots one more game for the NFL
week that comes tonight. The loan remaining undefeated team tries
to stay that way, that's the Kansas City Chiefs. The
Texans slot in the AFC playoff standings is now a
very familiar one. They are the last place team of
the four division winners currently leading their divisions. Kansas City's
(03:29):
number one Buffalo won again a sixty one yard field
goal to close out their win over the Tua Tagavaloa
led Dolphins, so they are seven to two. The Steelers
had the week off, they stayed at six and two,
and obviously the Texans fell to six and three. So
just like when they left us in the postseason a
year ago as the four seed, if the playoffs started
(03:51):
today and we'd be back in position as the four
seed and potentially meeting a very familiar foe. But all
that stuff's gonna get play. Texans have met with the
media today. They did make a couple of roster moves
today which we will discuss.
Speaker 4 (04:06):
One very unimportant roster move.
Speaker 3 (04:10):
It didn't happen, and I thought that it might, and
it's I don't know if it's telling or not, but
it's definitely worth discussion, and obviously some focus on how
do they make sure that what has happened in the
last three weeks doesn't keep happening for the foreseeable future
by taking advantage of the availability of players on other teams.
They need to do something with their offensive line. Pretty
(04:32):
much acknowledged today that Kenyan Green season is over by
Demico Ryans, and they'll have to have somebody step up.
They had somebody take his snaps each of the last
two weeks, briefly Jarrett Patterson and for a lengthier period
of time Kendrick Green, with varying levels of success, if
you want to use that word. So there are a
lot of things for them concern themselves with as they
(04:54):
get ready for unquestionably the best team in the other conference.
Detroit Lions, are coming to down Sunday night for the
second of three consecutive Houston Texans Prime time tilts. The
one a week and a day from this Sunday's game
is the always anticipated matchup of CJ. Stroud against Cooper Rush.
Speaker 2 (05:16):
Okay, few things to get to. First of all, this
is why you don't lose that game on Thursday night
to the Jets. The Texans are about to get kicked
by about thirty. Oh okay, all right, well I'm gonna
remember that we said this a little over a week
from now.
Speaker 3 (05:34):
Just because they're favored to beat the Tech. You know,
every team in the division is favored to lose this week,
three of them at home. This division's awful, the Texans
being dogs. I'm surprised it's where it's at today. I
think it's gone down a little bit. It's sitting at
three for a team that just went to Green Bay
in miserable conditions and even though the score wasn't a
huge margin and they didn't blow up offensively, they handled
(05:57):
business pretty well against a team that fancies themselves as
a Super Bowl contender. Detroit is playing some really, really
good football. It's Detroit's super Bowl to lose. And yes,
I mean that, including Kansas City. There's nothing if you
took those two teams right now based on what we've
seen from them, and in Detroit's case, before and after
(06:18):
losing one of the top five defensive players in football.
I mean, it's not whether they're going to win on
each given week, it's how much the margin's going to
be buying some cases. And again, I watched that game
yesterday and I'm like, man, if the Texans just had
an offensive line, that could have been them. So Josh
(06:38):
Jacobs on the Packers side last night, they just kept
feeding in the ball and he kept running through holes.
And not only was he doing that, he was doing
so in a way that looked exactly like the hundred
yard games that Joe Mixon has been putting up. One
little hole for him, he finds his way through, one
little cut necessary, he finds his way through, turning a
five yard game into a twelve yard game. Now he
(06:59):
did almost nothing after that. Jacobs had one hundred combined
yards rushing and receiving almost immediately in that game last night,
and then kind of nothing else the rest of the ways.
They kind of shifted what they were doing because of
the scoreboard a little bit, and probably because of Love's
health situation and decision making at the end of the
first half. But yeah, it's I have the very same thought.
Speaker 2 (07:20):
It's just it's it's frustrating because you do have all
the pieces in place. Outside of that one major piece,
you don't have any pieces in place. I'll give you
Laramie Tonsel I guess just because I.
Speaker 4 (07:31):
Guess, it doesn't matter anymore.
Speaker 3 (07:33):
JARREMI tellscy gonna be as good as you want to
pretend he is, or I can say he's really good
as a pass blocker. It doesn't if a five million
unit isn't very good. That's the well discussion.
Speaker 2 (07:41):
The one thing about that that I would say is
it is different is that at least it is the
most important position on the offensive line that your best
player is at. Could you imagine if they had somebody
that wasn't good at left tackle, he'd be dead by now.
Speaker 3 (07:54):
I'm just not necessarily, It's just he would know where
it's coming from.
Speaker 4 (07:57):
A little bit.
Speaker 3 (07:58):
You'd think, see, he knows where it's coming from. Talking
about CJ, where's the rush coming from. It's just harder
to accomplish offensively what they're trying to do because of
where it's coming from, which is essentially usually right up
the middle and the pocket's getting collapsed or you can't
step up all the If he knew there was such
a weak link there only there and same with Bobby Slowik,
(08:19):
and you wouldd accommodate maybe for it. Maybe there are
more situations like you know how the tackle eligible comes
in usually for running plays.
Speaker 2 (08:26):
Hey, that you have to announce it.
Speaker 3 (08:27):
Well, there's a lot of things about the little tiny
pieces of well, that's an illegal formation.
Speaker 4 (08:33):
You were covering him up.
Speaker 3 (08:35):
I mean, I get it, and I know the actual
reason why they have that as still a rule.
Speaker 4 (08:40):
And you know when we used to have the number.
Speaker 3 (08:41):
Like there's so many things that I'm sorry, it's just
now the ball, throw the ball. Yeah, really, this is
really the this really needs to be in place still
with where we are with the game of football.
Speaker 4 (08:51):
It seems kind of pedestrian.
Speaker 2 (08:52):
Oh way to do it.
Speaker 3 (08:53):
But yeah, even if that were the case, they would
maybe be able to, Well, this edge rusher is definitely
going to come through, So we need to do this,
that and the other, and we have to well the
problems that they do have, you've got to do we
better see something different from the offense. And I don't
mean success. I mean you have to assume you're not
(09:13):
capable of defending your quarterback, protecting your quarterback the way
you've tried to protect him the first nine weeks. If
you don't go into the game assuming that you're going
to be overwhelmed, then you're doing it wrong. Then Bobby
Slowick's game plan is wrong. He's been going in for
weeks saying this is what I want to do, and
we're gonna keep trying, and we're gonna keep trying. It
isn't You can't keep doing the same thing over. I mean,
(09:36):
I think I opened the show with the same type
of ramp. It is insanity. I don't know what new
players might be there. But remember today's Tuesday, and I
know this the game last night Minnesota and in an apoltes,
today's Monday trade Deadline's Tuesday. When the player would come
in would be Tuesday unless they make a deal today
and they get him here in the next nine hours.
(09:58):
Cam Robinson started to snap last night for the Vikings,
and Kevin O'Connell after the game talked about how it's
not supposed to be.
Speaker 2 (10:05):
As easy as he made it look.
Speaker 3 (10:07):
I don't know that the Texans would be able to
find somebody and get them in tune with what they're
doing when communication is such a big part of things.
But I guess that is still a possibility that the
group that is here today is not the five person
group that will be out there comes Sunday night. Got
a couple extra hours because it's a night game.
Speaker 2 (10:26):
Well, and we got an extra hour this weekend. Yeah,
it's kind of the longest day. Every Yesterday, there's no
Texans game. My kid woke me up early because he
doesn't know any better, and.
Speaker 4 (10:36):
It's just, don't you know what time it is?
Speaker 2 (10:37):
Oh my no, gosh no, and nobody else does either.
And it was just, I mean it was I walked
in to the living room from the back of the
house just to I was just stretching my legs because
you know, it's Sunday and I've been watching football all day.
And I walk in there and she's on the couch
and I'm like, it's it feels like it's midnight. And
it was like, not even nine o'clock. You're old. Oh
(10:59):
my gosh. I felt so old yesterday. By the way,
speaking of Sunday night, I think the NFL looked at
what they saw last night and said, Okay, we are
not putting Joe Flacco versus the carcass of Aaron Rodgers
in a Sunday night game. When we could see Joe
Burrow putting up forty one points on the crappy Raiders
(11:23):
and say, hey, I'm gonna put him in primetime against
the Chargers. That game has just been flexed to next
Sunday night, preceding the Cowboys Texans national game. The night
following that. So you went from Colts Jets in New
York on the terrible turf to now Bengals at Chargers.
Speaker 4 (11:42):
That has a lot of Aaron Rodgers channeling his Michael
Jordan to me sound to it. He took that personally.
Speaker 2 (11:50):
Oh well, let's just see if that has any bearing
on how he beats the Colts up. Anyway, I've got
a really bad scenario for you when we come back.
Speaker 5 (12:00):
The eight on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 1 (12:05):
Back to Adam Clinton and Adam Wexler, The eight on
Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 2 (12:16):
A team rolling along here on Sports Talk seven ninety
on a Monday edition of the program Space City Home Network,
along for the ride as per usual. So you can
stare at us instead of just listening to us, or
you can do both, which is basically what you're doing
if you're watching us on TV. Here's the thing about yesterday.
When the Texans have a bye week, it always feels like, Okay,
(12:37):
there's no pressure, not that there's pressure. This is where
wex and I are completely different people. I'm sitting there
watching any number of Houston sporting events and just I
want to just die inside. Twenty times a game that's
who I am. I'm like a lot of you guys
that listen, So just know that we're a lot alike
in that way. My co host is a cyborg who
has no emotions whatsoever, is probably a robot underneath that
(12:59):
skin in and just whatever whatever happens is going to happen.
Speaker 4 (13:03):
Some sort of titanium alloy and some exoskeleton.
Speaker 2 (13:06):
Updated a liquid version. It's really really convenient.
Speaker 4 (13:09):
Bob Patrick than an Arnold.
Speaker 2 (13:11):
Yeah, exactly, especially if you work in in some sort
of detention center and you need to get through bars easily.
You're good with that.
Speaker 4 (13:18):
But I might not be a twin looking to get
coffee at the mental institution.
Speaker 2 (13:21):
Your days are numbered. Poke your eye out with that thing.
So anyway, I'm watching these games yesterday, and, by the way,
an inordinate amount of entertaining games. I thought, I don't normally,
because we've talked about this, you're usually at a Texans
home game. I don't really know what your habit is
when you're when it's a road game. When it's a
road game, do you watch Red Zone? No, I'll watch
(13:44):
the Texans game until it's over and then I'll move on.
That was the funny thing. One time Wex came over
and to watch a game. It was a couple of
seasons ago and the Texans sucked, so I was Taylor.
It was so the Browns game, and I think it
was still September. I mean, this is early. So I
do what I was gonna do if I were there
(14:04):
by myself. I put the Texans game on my laptop
and streamed it, and then I put Red Zone channel
on the big, huge, ginormic projection screen. And it took
about five seconds afternoon for Wex to go, hey, man,
what are you doing. Where's the Texans game now?
Speaker 3 (14:20):
And then I was trying to remember from a semantic standpoint,
did he invite me to or to watch football or
did he say, let's watch the Texans games?
Speaker 2 (14:27):
Watch that game? But so yesterday, point of all this
is I'm watching you know, Red Zone, and I'm seeing
the finishes to the to the early games and then
you know the late window. And then of course last
night was far more entertaining than it needed to be
from just a sheer close score standpoint, but not at
all from an esthetic standpoint. And by the way, uh,
(14:49):
Mike Tarico and Chris Collinsworth, you can stop telling us
how impressed we should be with that stupid pregame ritual
they do in Minnesota. They co after head together and
then they blowing a horn. That's not cool. Fine, a
whole bunch of seventy thousand people did it at the
same time. You know what I think about every time
I think of Minnesota. A, the Texans have never won
against that team, and B I hate that. Yeah, and
(15:12):
it reminds me of that.
Speaker 3 (15:13):
There's a few stadiums, especially college that do certain sound
effects a little bit more often than you'd like. The
ghost spurs, go, the go pack, go that the train.
Speaker 2 (15:24):
Every time the Astro is hitting home run against you.
I know people hate the sound of that lately. Just
think about those vikings imposing fans. I think you heard
the horn like three or four times or fifty. Well,
last night when the Astros homer against the opponent, it's
it's a baseball game.
Speaker 4 (15:40):
How many times is that gonna happen?
Speaker 2 (15:42):
Right? Once?
Speaker 4 (15:42):
Twice, three times?
Speaker 2 (15:43):
Maybe it's a Game five of the World Series.
Speaker 4 (15:45):
This is not gonna happen.
Speaker 2 (15:46):
Then it's gonna happen like thirteen. So the point of
all this is that I'm looking at that and you know,
it's it's it's nice to have no pressure. And it
felt in a lot of ways yesterday like it was
there bye week because of that element. You know, Thursday
was in the rearview mirror. Yeah, it sucks to lose
a game when you have that much time in between
that one and the next one. But let me I'm
not speaking for us again, but i am speaking for
(16:08):
a number of people when I'm like, I'm not in
any hurry to line up against Detroit right now after
what I've seen from them and quilled up in the corner. Well,
li's great. I'm gonna tell you something right now. And
this is the scenario that I was did I tease
before we went to the break, You're in a very
very risky scenario where if something goes wrong, and statistically
(16:30):
it says it will because their line is crap. Right now,
you're looking at a Cooper Rush Davis Mills Monday night game.
I'm not kidding, right.
Speaker 4 (16:39):
Tak me a long time.
Speaker 3 (16:40):
We're going into the tenth game of the season to
go that route, like there is concern clearly when you're
getting hit that often. It is amazing that the sex
statistics shouldn't be the end all be all, and I'm
glad it's not anymore. It isn't a very interesting indicator
for the result. Has nothing to do with the health,
because you're right, he's he's getting up slowly a lot
(17:02):
more often in each succeeding game. I've got a little,
they hit me low, I got crushed. Whatever it is,
it's happening a lot more often. But it is a
pretty simple road to their record this year with relation
to how often CJ. Stroud is actually getting sacked on
a game by game basis, Texans are six and three.
(17:24):
They're actually undefeated at home. They try to get their
fifth home win in their fifth home game. They've played
five on the road, they're two and three.
Speaker 4 (17:32):
When CJ.
Speaker 3 (17:32):
Stroud has been sacked two times or less, which has
happened four times, the Texans are undefeated. They're four and
Oh they're also better at home. Right, But I'm just
saying he's getting hit a ton. He got hit a
ton against Indianapolis, he got hit a bunch in some
of these other wins, even though the sack total was low,
(17:54):
and when it's low, he can perform. That's the point
I'm making More often than not, if you just keep
the sack total low, he's so good. Even with what
we saw on Thursday night, with many more missed connections
on poorly thrown balls for obvious reasons, you probably still
run a pretty good chance of winning the game. The
(18:16):
real issue is there's only four such games. For only
four games and nine you've had CJ. Stroud sacked twice
or less. Even last year. We keep trying to compare
this year to last year and who's doing what on
the offensive line. He had three consecutive games with no
sacks last year three consecutive games. He had five consecutive
(18:36):
games with two sacks or less, and had another game
like that before he got hurt, and then had two
more after.
Speaker 4 (18:44):
He got hurt.
Speaker 3 (18:44):
There's no way they're gonna have that many games like
that this year, in year two when things should be
getting better, especially when you decide to bring almost all
of the same guys back to do the same job.
They're just doing it much more ineffectively. Some of it
I would credit to other teams looking at more film
on Sloak's offense and what they like to do. But
(19:06):
more often than not, if you go watch how certain
players are getting beat, especially on the interior scrugs, the
Greens and Shaq Mason.
Speaker 4 (19:15):
It's not a scheme issue.
Speaker 3 (19:17):
It's not we didn't pick up this twist or this
is a well run executed stunt. Guys are missing blocks,
balls snapped and they're just absolutely whiffing. A ball is
snap and they're just getting driven into the backfield. That's
what's happening too often.
Speaker 4 (19:33):
Not every play, not every broken play, not every time
he's running for his life, but far too often it's
that simple.
Speaker 3 (19:40):
I can't do my job. It's not the other five guys.
It's not communication, it's not something crazy you're seeing. You
just can't line up across from somebody and block them.
Speaker 2 (19:52):
You know, I was thinking about this as it pertains
to win. The Texans address this. It's not a matter
of this, it's just a matter of of when and how,
and I'd say also how aggressively they do it. This
is this is kind of morbid in a way, but
it's he already killed. CJ.
Speaker 4 (20:10):
Davis is starting in two week.
Speaker 2 (20:11):
Well, that's the thing. And what do we talk about
all the time with rules changes in any sport, but
especially in the NFL. Well, it's gonna take somebody basically
like getting creamed before we actually do what we've all
been talking about for multiple seasons. I'm not saying that
Nick Cassario is completely unawares, as they say in New
York that his offensive line is porous, Swiss cheese, whatever
(20:34):
you wanna call it. But if CJ gets hurt for
whatever reason because of that line, it is absolutely gonna
you know, the pressure will start building immensely more than
it already was from the higher ups. I mean, Hannah's
gonna come out of the suite and she is absolutely
going to start making roster moves herself at that rate.
(20:55):
She loves CJ. We all love CJ.
Speaker 4 (20:57):
Yeah, this is where weight.
Speaker 3 (20:58):
This was something that was parent long before these last
three games happen. And he's been pressured and these tackles
for loss on the running side, and he's seen this
incredible increase in fifty percent on average, a little bit
above fifty percent three consecutive weeks is the pressure rate
he's beIN up against. Well prior to that, it was
in the high thirties on average. That's still not good enough.
(21:21):
So this isn't brand new. This is in the last
couple of weeks. This isn't I think it's a what
are you waiting for? You might have to make a
deal that's not favorable for you from a balance standpoint,
but so what Yeah, you can't worry about that, And
the closer you get to the deadline, the worst the
balance is going to be. And I'd still advocate for it.
(21:42):
There are not too many really talented linemen that play
for awful teams that are ready to sell, because if
they're good, they usually provide time for their quarterback and
then that helps the quarterback be good. One of them
happens to be in the division. I would be shocked
if Jacksonville were willing to say, would you guys like
Brandon Shurf, The Texans would say yes, offered, and I'm
sure they could come to some sort of an agreement.
(22:03):
And I think the name's been brought up here before
as well, Wyatt Teller, And I'm not sure where they
would want to slot him in, but obviously somewhere on
the guard line, whether it's left or right, presumably left.
I don't know that the Browns are going to want
to do that. I definitely think that Texans would be
willing to take on whatever it happens to be contractually,
and obviously whatever it takes in assets you have to
(22:26):
send out. Every other lineman they could get is essentially
someone that's not quite working out for whatever reason, and
wherever they are, they're playing a backup role, or they've
been benched, or they're not a part of their future
and they don't mind moving on from them. But even still,
all those moves, i'd rubber stamp. You probably just can't
keep trotting out the same guys you're trotting out At
(22:46):
some point that has to become Nick's reality.
Speaker 2 (22:49):
Yeah, it's funny. Maybe you were like me last night.
You're watching the offensive lineman introduce themselves on national television.
You got line envy. That was me.
Speaker 5 (23:00):
On Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 2 (23:03):
I was watching those offensive linemen introduced themselves on the
game last night, and I was doing so with Crystal
Clear twenty twenty vision courtesy of Berkeley Eye Center. And
then I looked at the calendar and I said, oh,
it's November. That means it's a Black Friday Lasik celebration
all month long at Berkeley Eye Center. If you have
been waiting for the best Lasik deal ever, It is
(23:25):
happening this month only at Berkeley Eye Center, and that
means everybody gets sixteen hundred dollars off world class Lasik.
And oh yeah, they're throwing in another forty percent off
designer sunglasses. But again, I've told you guys this a
million times. Had the operation done way back in two
thousand and eight, been seeing better than twenty twenty ever since,
and it really is a game changer. It's a life
(23:47):
changing event. And for the better, LASK is cheaper than
glasses and contacts. I can tell you that from experience,
and you'll see way better. Get the details on Black Friday,
Lasik by calling seven one, three five two six. Eyes
are going to be Eclacy dot com. Heystar East is good.
Listen to Rockets Radio or your smart device just ask
(24:10):
play Sports dot seven ninety on iHeartRadio. So this is
just between us girls, your opinion on this. Do you
think CJ has gone to the Texans? Not like a
(24:31):
how do I say this? Not like a formal request,
but you know it, somebody in his position and somebody
that is good as he is, it doesn't take them
long to figure out they've got clout in an organization.
Speaker 3 (24:43):
Yeah, right now on the A team, WEX and AC
here with you talking about the Texans getting advice about
personnel and other staff changes from their starting quarterback.
Speaker 4 (24:52):
How do you think this is gonna go?
Speaker 2 (24:53):
But they've done this day being starting NFL quarterbacks, done
this for decades.
Speaker 3 (24:59):
He doesn't need to, I mean, to express extreme frustration. Sure,
everything he could possibly say is so obvious.
Speaker 2 (25:07):
Do you think the Cowboys are taking advice from Dak
Prescott from lip readers on the sideline when he says
so clearly, we bleeping suck?
Speaker 4 (25:15):
I mean, that was awesome. That's tough to say, that's
what he said.
Speaker 2 (25:18):
That was really hard. Do you think he said if
it wasn't that we're really close and that's not what
his lips were student that, No.
Speaker 4 (25:24):
We are snake bit This isn't on us.
Speaker 2 (25:27):
See none of those sound or even look like we
bleeping suck.
Speaker 4 (25:33):
Jerry's really good.
Speaker 2 (25:35):
Definitely didn't say that.
Speaker 3 (25:37):
So, no, you're right, and I bet you the answer
is actually yes, probably some sort of conversation has been
had because it's pretty clear that they have a pretty
good relationship with him, the owners and the quarterback, the
quarterback and the GM the quarterback.
Speaker 2 (25:49):
And the coach.
Speaker 3 (25:50):
I just don't think it needs to be said. I
think he would say what he feels is necessary. But
I don't think he wants to walk out of the
locker room and into Dimico's office, Knicks office, or Cal's
office if he's there, and tell them, hey.
Speaker 2 (26:03):
He's there, you mean playing video games.
Speaker 3 (26:06):
Well, I know Demico and Nick are there because they're
with them and on the field with them for quite
a bit of their days, or in the meeting of
rooms with I don't mean to say he's not there.
Speaker 2 (26:15):
It's funny because it's plausible, but.
Speaker 3 (26:19):
He's literally he's lockering next to these people that we're
talking about, his teammates, and they're not just random teammates.
There is offensive line teammates. His lockermate to the left
is well vacated right now. It was Stefan Diggs, and
then Joe Mixon is right next to them, and to
his right is Jarimie Tunzel. To his right is Titus Howard.
(26:39):
So I do think there's a pretty good chance that
it's kind of understood. They're watching the games, they know
what's happening. They see why this season is again far
from derailed five. It's spiraling in an in an individual
team area. Since they're having a hard time operating their offense,
they're having a hard time protect their quarterback. The season's
(27:01):
not spiraling out of control, but if they don't fix it,
the idea that they're going to do something this season
is over. And that's the bigger picture, even for twenty
twenty four. I think everyone is looking at and you
can't look anywhere else. There's no the mirrors shining right
back at you that who do you think? How many
wins do you really think are in your playoff future?
If these are problems that persist against every opponent. Three
(27:24):
straight opponents have made you look silly offensively, even though
you had enough success against Indianapolis to win, it's just
not the way you want to be operating. You think
you're gonna win a home playoff game against the Ravens
or the Steelers, that's possible. Do you think you're gonna
win a game after that on the road? I mean
the possibility is always yeah, sure, but you're not going
to be the better team now anymore. And you've got
(27:46):
this massive deficiency you haven't been able to figure out
how to overcome. They got enough season left to figure
it out. They have enough days to figure it out
before they get to the Lions that it's just so.
It's probably also like the other coaches. I'm working on
this game plan, and I'm working with my wideouts, and
I'm trying to figure out how to make sure you
know this happens, that happens. They all know, well, it
doesn't really matter if that area doesn't get changed. No thought,
(28:09):
no word that I've seen or heard from the Texans
on any other significant changes, a coaching change, or any
definitive word on what's going on with the offensive line.
I never expected from them. And Wednesday, when we see
them briefly on the field preparing for the Lions, maybe
we'll have a little bit of an idea in the
roster might look a little different. They did make a
couple of moves today of significance. Both the two players
(28:31):
on the ir that were designated for return have been
designated for return, and their practice window, their twenty one
day practice window will open. I know you want me
to say Nico Collins. I know everybody thought we'd be
saying Nico Collins, and I'm not saying we won't be
saying it, but those two players are Jerry Hughes and Jeffakuda.
Jeffacuda probably would have started the season as the backup
(28:52):
to Stingley and Lassiter had he been healthy, and he
will almost immediately step into be the backup for Stingley
and Lassiter. Now that hopefully he is. Doesn't mean either
one of them are active for this weekend's game. They're
not yet on the fifty three men active roster because
it's the practice window that's open. And the same should
I hope be true for Nico Collins very very soon.
(29:13):
In order for him to play this week. It would
obviously have to happen this week, and there's still no
indication that it will not, but definitely nothing from the
coach on that front, as he doesn't really get into
those things.
Speaker 2 (29:25):
Look, I'm really looking forward to to Nico Collins playing.
I'm also really looking forward to him not being targeted
like what happened from the Lions defender in last night's game.
By the way, I didn't think that was as bad
in real time, which is usually the opposite. You see
something and it's like, ah, that doesn't look that bad
(29:46):
in slow mo, and then in real time it's like
that was brutal there.
Speaker 3 (29:49):
Yeah, real time, you wondered, is there enough time? Is
Brian Branch that hit a receiver helmet to helmet the
ball was already gone. But again I'm not even blaming
Branch for that. Maybe it's more the timing when the
ball arrived to the timing of the hit. If the
ball is not there anymore, you probably should not be
hitting them at all if the opportunity is there.
Speaker 4 (30:06):
The opportunity was not there to miss them completely.
Speaker 3 (30:09):
But when you slow it down and the contact has
made helmet to helmet does appear like the timing of
when you arrive versus when the play was essentially already over,
probably could have been avoided to reach the level of
an ejection. And I know there's a poor report and
the officials explained it out. That looked like your man,
that looked awful. You're gonna have to penalize that for sure.
(30:29):
And that's that, and hopefully the player's healthy, and then
you just move on after the fifteen yards are assessed
and they chose otherwise, and Branch was just immediately ejected,
And they do have that opportunity, the officials and those upstairs.
There's certain things you can kind of go with, and
they did. I was surprised by the announcer on the game,
was surprised by it, so much so that people were
(30:51):
wondering if that particular announcer, who has a stake in
an NFL team as an owner, would be reprimanded because
you're not allowed to do that as an owner, speak
negatively about the officials. All he did is say I
don't really agree with that call, which seems commonplace and innocuous.
But he's not your typical game announcer because he owns
one of the other teams, a part of one of
(31:13):
the other teams.
Speaker 4 (31:14):
Tom Brady, he's exactly.
Speaker 2 (31:15):
But you know what, on that How long until that
even becomes a thing, Because even if you were to
say something that was it didn't even have to be
like over the top, but it just needs to be
like somewhat demonstrative. Is the NFL really going to hold
him to it? He's Tom Brady, Well, what.
Speaker 3 (31:33):
Do you mean hold him to it? Well, what do
you They would do whatever they can do. I don't
see why they wouldn't.
Speaker 4 (31:38):
It's nothing.
Speaker 3 (31:38):
They're not going to fire him from one or take
him away from the other. That that's for much further
down the road with a much more egregious something he
says during a game. I can't imagine he says anything
that bad.
Speaker 4 (31:49):
What that has to do with either.
Speaker 3 (31:50):
If he said something bad, then he would be treated,
I would hope like any other announcer, like you can't
say that you're.
Speaker 2 (31:56):
What if you you know, have a situation where it's
so bad from an officiating standpoint, like say the when
the Saints got jobbed in the playoffs a few years back,
and he just because I mean, we've seen Tom Brady
go off, just ask Bill O'Brien.
Speaker 4 (32:11):
But the difference is you and I.
Speaker 2 (32:13):
We do what Tom does, but he's as a former player,
so he has a little bit more of a stake
in whatever's happening on the field. Just from that standpoint,
he really feels strongly about whatever's just happened, and he
goes off. However, are they just gonna find him? They're
not gonna fire It.
Speaker 4 (32:30):
Goes like I said, he does what we do.
Speaker 3 (32:32):
On occasion when we were on the other microphone alongside
Matt on Rockets games. There's time there's things I might
say to somebody off air or in a conversation about
it afterwards because of a player I don't agree with,
or a call I don't make.
Speaker 2 (32:44):
Shout out to Josh always making sure my mic is
crazy saying something and I don't.
Speaker 3 (32:49):
I'm not going to shy away from giving I think
a reasonable opinion in a professional way. But there are
ways you can do it. I'm sure Tom's figuring that out,
probably already knows.
Speaker 2 (32:57):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (32:58):
We got plenty more to say this opening up the show.
Speaker 5 (33:02):
The eighteen on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 1 (33:07):
Back to Adam Clinton and Adam Wexler. Now here's Adam. No, no,
the other Adam on second thought, No Adam, you take it? No, no, no, no, Adam.
Wait wait Adam. Guys, guys, thee.
Speaker 2 (33:27):
EY team here on a Monday edition of the program,
rolling along after Oh, by the way, let's just let's
just bring this up since we're talking about players getting
killed figuratively on the football field. What say you a
noted not the biggest fan of Derek Carr on what
happened with Chris Lave yesterday? Because I'm sure you've seen
(33:50):
the video by now of him chasing who was he
chasing down the tunnel after the game. Cam Jordan Cam Jordan. Correct,
he walked.
Speaker 3 (33:59):
Cam Jordan did not immediately go back into the locker room,
and Derek Carr walked after him, and then Alvin Kamara
walked after both of them. Nothing was happening. They weren't
yelling at anybody. There's no incident. It just was clearly
that cl And there's probably a few leaders of that
now head coachless team, but he is the leader, Cam
(34:20):
Jordan of that team. They did fire their head coach today,
by the way, Dennis Allen after is seventh straight defeat,
and they're special teams coordinators.
Speaker 4 (34:27):
Now they're interim head coach.
Speaker 2 (34:29):
You think Alan Kamarow is like, wow, I am really
wasting the last couple of years of my prime.
Speaker 3 (34:33):
I mean just two months ago they were mopping the
floor with first the Cowboys and then the Panthers or
vice versa. And now they can't beat anybody, and you
can see why. And they got Derek Carr back, and
it really doesn't change anything because why would it, Hello, NFL,
I can only blame two ownership groups and all the
gms that they've been through.
Speaker 2 (34:55):
You aren't going to win with Derek Carr. How do
you not know that?
Speaker 3 (35:01):
By now him playing in your games, him being your
this is our QB one you cannot win. It's been
proven time and time again. But the point you're making
about the throat to Chris a Lava, I think it's
more unfortunate than blaming Derek.
Speaker 2 (35:17):
He does.
Speaker 3 (35:18):
It would be nice for a Lava if the ball's
down a little bit, considering his angle to throw it.
I don't think that is something that can't be done,
and probably should be done. The timing of when the
hit occurs and where the you know, defenseless receiver I
don't think is always just a blanket term. When you've
thrown a receiver into leaving his feet, raising his arms
above his head, exposing his body, and then he gets
(35:41):
crushed because of it. That's that's one type of defenseless receiver.
The other type is pretty much just the timing of it.
You know, you throw a nice pass, hit him in
his belly. He caught it, but it was right when
you know a safety would clearly be able to get there.
You didn't look him offen of it was such an
easy read it to play whatever the case may be.
And it's kind of a combination of because I don't
think he physically exposed a lave in that totally defenseless way,
(36:05):
but where the throw was. He leaves his feet, he
goes up to catch it, he's focused on the football.
He makes the catch essentially, and he gets hit in
the head and that sends him to the hospital.
Speaker 4 (36:16):
He has a terrible concussion history to begin with.
Speaker 3 (36:20):
And then Derek Carr is getting it from a former
wide receiver who's now not in the league but looking
to become a part of the league again. Mike Thomas
and I listened to all two minutes. I think that
Derek Carr had to say about it. He wasn't aware
of the actual comment, but he was made aware that
it had been made, or he said he hadn't seen it.
Speaker 2 (36:37):
He handled that very well.
Speaker 3 (36:38):
He said, I don't know what it is, and I
wonder if other teammates will come to his defense or
say that's not true. He said, I played with a
lot of players here and elsewhere, and he's pretty much
the only guy I didn't get along with. I really
don't know why I didn't know then, I don't know now,
you know, he's I've got my number, or he's got
my number. It's never changed, never reached out to me.
(37:00):
In fact, I've reached out to him, but I just
don't know why. I hope he gets whatever it is
he's looking for with his return to the league or whatever.
He did handle it very well, and I'm sure he
feels awful about it.
Speaker 2 (37:09):
I don't.
Speaker 3 (37:10):
I mean, I talked about it here in Houston a
Ton and in New England a Ton because it was
the same offense, the Bill O'Brien Josh McDaniels offense that
was utilized by Tom Brady there and by a host
of bad quarterbacks here and then Deshaun Watson. It was
definitely designed to get your slot receiver murdered because it
happened to every single one of them. It happened to Anadola,
(37:33):
it happened to Edelman, it happened to Bruce Ellington here.
It happened countless receivers here in that very same offense.
I mean, you're expecting these players to be able to
take the hit and make the play. You really should
be trying to do something else. And I'm actually glad
more ex quarterbacks. We have a lot of them now
that have voices shows, social media, podcast, television shows. They're
(37:57):
analysts and they're trying to I think a lot of
we're putting that message out there saying it is on us.
It's our job to help do more preventative work on
leaving these guys hung I mean guys not we we
sit here and oh man, he alligator armed in like
I feel awful if I ever said that, and I
know we do sometimes, but there's a reason why.
Speaker 4 (38:18):
So it's a bad situation.
Speaker 3 (38:20):
In the New Orleans they're in line potentially to be
the team that gets in the number one pick. There's
still nine teams sitting there with two wins there one
of them they lost seven in a row.
Speaker 4 (38:28):
They did fire their coach. We're gonna start seeing coaches fired,
and how many of them out there are gonna be
looking for a head coach? And where are they coming from?
Speaker 3 (38:38):
Clearly, the situation here does not look like anyone on
the Texans staff would be up for a head coaching
job the way things have gone. Clearly they had interviews
last year, they being Bobby Slowick, but that's not where
things end. Somebody's gonna get hired for both of the
jobs that are open in New York and New Orleans.
They'll be three or four jobs open also at least
well they're they're all gonna need offensive court. And for
(39:01):
as much as we liked the group, they kept almost
intact above CJ, well, it's not going to stay together
very long. I mean, Drad Johnson is in line to
be an OC next year, because if he's not the
OC here, which I don't think he will be, then
he's probably gonna be one somewhere else. You lost Shane
Day last year to the Chargers, you could potentially lose
Johnson this year. Still have Bill Azer, you still have
Bobby Slog. There are things that will be concerning to
(39:24):
this team. And again job one is this year's team.
Worry about that when you get there. Worry about those
situations when they truly do arise. You know, the playoff
picture in the AFC still looks just as rosie as
it did before. Would have looked even more so had
Miami come up with their upset of the Bills, which
they nearly did.
Speaker 2 (39:42):
They got the over on that game, but I would
have really liked Miami to hold on and win.
Speaker 3 (39:45):
Yeah, they just didn't. They're clearly this is what I
said prior to the Jets game. There's all these terrible
records for some AFC teams that are remaining on The
Texans had five nine new games remaining against two win teams,
but clearly two of them aren't two win rosters. Dolphins
are the other one. The Jets are the first one.
The Jets aren't a two win caliber team. That's probably
(40:07):
not a roster. They could even find their way to
four and thirteen or five and twelve. They're gonna be
much closer to five hundred, if not over five hundred,
by the time of the year is over, and beating
the Texans helps make that a possibility. But the Dolphins
are the very same thing, and they're part of that
three game stretch where the Texans have the Dolphins, the Chiefs,
and the Ravens. I don't know what I mean. Maybe
it's bad that you're seeing them with Tuoa. Maybe it's
(40:28):
not so bad, like they're gonna have something they'll play for.
I can't imagine what that many games remaining it's over
for them. They're just a totally different team when he's
on the field. They're a live dog every time he's
out there with him, because they can score and they
can move the ball, and the running game works, everything's there,
So the Bills beating them looks like, oh yeah, another
Hohome win over a crappy AFC East Division four. That's
(40:49):
just really not who they are, and I don't think
it's who the Jets are moving forward either, even though
it wasn't. I mean, as much as the Jets did
so well against the Texans, we're sitting here talking about
how poorly the Texans played. That terrible night of football
for the Texans, had them leading the game in the
fourth quarter, in a one score game much of the
fourth quarter, and at the end of the fourth quarter,
(41:11):
all while looking as bad as they did. So I'm
not saying the Jets are back and the Jets are unbeatable,
far from it. But you can't take them for granted
like you can some of these other two win teams,
like the Patriots, who they mauled like I assume the
Titans moving forward, especially if the next twenty four hours
they continue moving players, which I think they're going to do.
Speaker 2 (41:31):
Yeah, Well, it's seller's season as much as it is
buyer season. It just depends on what your season has
gone like. And that was another thing that was interesting
about yesterday. Both one win teams got wins, so they're
still kind of vying for the number one pick in
the draft. But speaking of which, speaking of trades, I've
got a not so great trade that the Texans could
(41:56):
be a part of. And it's not what you think
it is. It's not going to be a actual transaction.
I'll explain when we start the four o'clock hour next.
Speaker 5 (42:04):
The ad on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 2 (42:09):

Speaker 1 (43:11):
Two lifelong Houston sports guys named Adam Talking Your Teams series,
Adam Clinton and Adam Wexler are the A Team A.
Speaker 2 (43:27):
It's a Monday edition of the program, our number two
of three. Here on the A Team as we take
you up until six o'clock tonight, the Rockets and the
Knicks are going to get together a little later than normal.
As we mentioned in the first hour, you've got every
single team in the NBA playing tonight. No teams on
the schedule Tomorrow night is part of the initiative the
(43:48):
NBA is pushing for voting because a lot of these
NBA arenas will be voting centers, and well, tomorrow is
something called Election Day. I don't know if you guys
have heard lately, there's been a few reports mixed and
match about it. But we were talking about the Texans.
You know, they got their miserable loss out of the
way for week nine before anyone else as they were
on Thursday night. There was a lot of activity yesterday,
(44:11):
much of which we still haven't gotten to after one
hour of show. But you know, you're looking forward. You're
seeing Detroit coming in. At least it's a home game.
You're I think you said it was three three and
a half. It started at five and a half, did
it not? It was three earlier today. I haven't looked
in the last five seconds. Nico Collins presumably coming back.
(44:33):
You're getting some other players back. It's not an absolute
just whitewashing you're facing. But man, Detroit's playing really good.
And then you look forward to that Cowboys game. For
a lot of reasons. You can't help it because I
think all the reports out there, it's nothing official yet.
I know he's looking for other opinions. Dak Prescott's not
going to play that game. It's just not looking like
(44:55):
that's going to be the case. Because at the very
least he's gonna miss more more than just the one
game coming up this week with his hamstring age. Injury,
and if he goes on the IR then he's definitely
out because that's a minimum of four games. We know
that better than anybody here in Houston, because, well, Nico
Collins is about to come off of the IR, so
you get him out of that game, which normally you
(45:17):
would think would be a big plus. I think, no
matter what, because it looks like he's gonna play this week,
you're gonna be going with that terrible offensive line opposite
Micah Parsons, He's not missing that game. If I'm the Texans,
I'd rather have Dak play and Mica be out at
this point because I can handle that Micah in and
(45:39):
Cooper Rush is the quarterback. You still risk a lot
if CJ's upright after this week against the Detroit Lions
and he's looking to avoid further getting up slowly as
we put it eloquently in the first first hour.
Speaker 3 (45:53):
Yeah, I mean if that was your option, for sure,
there's no question about it. They keep playing games without
Micah Parsons and with Dak Prescott and lose.
Speaker 2 (46:00):
So yeah, that would obviously be throw about three picks
against the Texas.
Speaker 3 (46:03):
It's not even that you're more concerned about just keeping
another excellent defensive player, maybe the best, definitely their best
away from your quarterback.
Speaker 4 (46:11):
Definitely the case that's two weeks away.
Speaker 3 (46:14):
Anything could happen with his own personal health, but yeah,
it looks pretty clear he was ruled out pretty quickly.
In yesterday's game Dak Prescott. He clearly threw the ball
in a manner that you could see was wincing in pain,
a little finger issue, but it was the hamstring that
had him sidelined. Cooper Rush did actually get them into
a one possession game, allowed them to attempt the on
side kick, which most of the time this year in
(46:36):
the NFL has been unsuccessful, and they finished out business
for the day. Probably Gonna, I would say, at the
bare minimum, he's missing the next three weeks. At some
point you've got to look out for him. You have
made this investment, and most people are looking at their
team and their record and the deadline and saying any
other owner might think about doing the obvious, and most
(46:58):
people think Jerry will not, which is to move on
from players that you don't view as a real solution
to your somewhat of a rebuild again rebuilding when you
spend all that money on Ceedee Lamb and Dak Prescott.
It's not a match that those things should not be
going together. You would not sign them if you anticipated
to rebuild, and it makes it very difficult to do
(47:19):
so because of what is sunk into them to lead
this team. Heck, Cadee Lamb was hurt in that game,
though his injury does not appear the shoulder injury of
one that would keep them off the field even this week,
let alone two weeks from now. But I know we
talk about them a lot and they're one of the
most popular topics in the NFL. And now there is
just two weeks to go before the Texans will play
(47:41):
the Cowboys. I think we have enough with the Lions
and the rest lace. I think we do before we
need to get too hot and heavy on woe is
Dallas and how they play football.
Speaker 2 (47:52):
Yeah, it's just something to think about because of the
news of today. It's more about on the Cowboys side
of things. Yeah, you certainly have any number of items
to discuss, things to look forward to, maybe not look
forward to. If you're the Texans and you're looking at
a very very stout Detroit Lions team coming in here
for Week ten. Just An absolute, absolute juggernaut. And they're
(48:17):
a team that to me, and I'm looking at their
schedule now, like, first of all, they haven't lost since
Week two, just to give you an idea.
Speaker 4 (48:26):
They've all lost once.
Speaker 2 (48:27):
I know of how well they are playing.
Speaker 4 (48:30):
But you're calling them an absolute juggernaut. Isn't it fair?
Speaker 3 (48:33):
With all the consternation we have on one side of
the football, both sides have their work cut out for them.
But the concern is totally different. How is this Texans
defense going to slow them down? That's an awesome football
conversation for us to have the next twenty hours on
the air. How are the Texans going to keep CJ.
Stroud upright? Is a totally different conversation. And I'm not
(48:55):
saying that Detroit's not going to get to them, because
everybody does. That's that's the biggest concern. We're not going
to sit here and lie to the people and say, yeah,
and Detroit's defense they are good, well, because they are
not there.
Speaker 2 (49:10):
They're not as good as I thought they were going
to be, Let's put it that way.
Speaker 3 (49:14):
But it happen even with Aiden Hutchinson for most of
the year that they've had so far, it'll turn out
to be less than half the year. By the time
we get there. They're twenty second in sacks per pass attempt.
They're thirtieth in yards per pass play, though I would
imagine some of that has to do with we're up
by twenty. I don't care how many yards you pass
for you're getting killed. There's definitely an element of that
(49:37):
in blowout losses. They're good against the run, but a
little bit of that is how the scoreboard is. But
a better tell is not how many yards they give
up per game, but how many yards they give up
per carry. The Texans are second in the NFL and
yards allowed per rush. The lines are right behind them.
They're number three. And you were talking about what Josh
Jacobs did to them early in the game, and of
(49:59):
course Blank is here with us today. I was talking
about how little he did after that. Almost all those
yards came on the first couple drives of the game.
Speaker 2 (50:09):
I'm just looking at their points that they have allowed
to in wins, which you're all but one. They've you know,
they've given up nearly thirty twice, but every other game
is super manageable. I mean, they want against the Rams
in week one and they gave up twenty. I always
throw Week one out though, because I just they're in
(50:31):
the bottom ten in the league in points allowed per game.
But if they hold the Texans to thirteen fourteen fourteen sixteen,
meaning that.
Speaker 3 (50:40):
The other team put eleven players on the field, like
they've been doing the last three weeks, really it doesn't
matter who they are.
Speaker 2 (50:44):
And if you're not able to do anything about them,
I mean, I get it. They put up fifty two
against the Titans. The Titans suck even their defense, which
is probably obviously the better side.
Speaker 4 (50:54):
Of the things, really good that it was amazing, But
you know, the best team.
Speaker 2 (50:58):
They've played is the Vikings, right unless unless you want
to see the Packers yesterday?
Speaker 4 (51:02):
Two really good teams? Are you? Are you trying to
discredit them now? Look at their schedule saying hey, Paper Tigers.
Speaker 2 (51:09):
I don't well, I don't look at the Packers as
favorably as a lot of teams do I think, or
a lot of people do. I think they're good, but
I just I'm I'm still bitter about the way the
Texans lost that game. CJ played like absolute trash because
he was harassed the whole game and they lost on
a last second field goal. Like for all the people
that want to talk about, oh, the Texans just aren't
that good. I mean, it's the worst six and three
(51:29):
team I've ever seen. Okay, all right, there's always two
sides to that argument, and that's the other side of it.
You know, they the only game they've really been out
classed is that Vikings game.
Speaker 3 (51:39):
Yeah, the Packers have a tendency to not quite they
haven't been quite sharp enough to be elite. They're definitely good.
They're a playoff caliber team. They're a hard team to beat.
And again, the last night's game was rather close all
things considered, especially when you consider they gave a touchdown
away at the end of the first half. Just take
the sack or throw the ball away, don't attempt that
(52:00):
play so you can keep your streak alive. He's played
seven games. He's thrown an interception in all seven games.
Talking about Jordan Love, he is still making a few
too many mistakes, and that's why you should really be
ticked about that Texans game. He made two big mistakes
in that game, and they picked up a fumble and
there were plus three in that game in the turnover matchup.
Speaker 4 (52:22):
Those are games you win and they didn't.
Speaker 2 (52:24):
Yeah, it's they this might be And I think a
lot of it has to do with the expectations we
had coming in for CJ. But and why shouldn't we,
Like luckily he did his rookie year behind you know,
not a great offensive line top to bottom, and at
the end of the day, in the end final analysis
of twenty twenty three, that's very very fair to say.
(52:45):
But like, I feel like he's played, Like I said
last week, I feel like he's playing with a hand
tie behind his back and so the numbers you're seeing
that aren't as eye popping as maybe you thought they
would be. You know, it's not that he's not playing well.
He's putting up good numbers, but I just feel like
there's just the yeah, he's not playing well. He's not
(53:07):
playing horribly though, and the reason I think he's playing
he's not playing.
Speaker 3 (53:11):
A great I know what you're saying, And their quarterback
play has been terrible, But why that's fair, But we
can't act like they're getting good quarterback play.
Speaker 4 (53:21):
It's I'm not even I'm not blaming him.
Speaker 2 (53:23):
I'm not saying that. I was saying the offensive line.
Speaker 3 (53:25):
The offensive play calling and the execution is creating bad
quarterback play. They're getting bad play from that position because
they're not allowing that player to succeed.
Speaker 2 (53:36):
That's fair, That's That's kind of what I was getting at.
It's just a weird way of going about it. Yeah,
a way longer you would just shut right to it.
I just well, I just I don't think people are
like dogging c J. And I'm like, well, he didn't
just wake up and forget how to play quarterback, like
if you, I don't know, like I don't even know
the analogy to make rest in year two my column.
I mean, yeah, that's it's not even low hanging fruit.
(53:58):
I don't even know what you would call that. It's
just lazy. But you know you have to I guess
you have to take that into account when you're just
doing the overall picture for the Texans, because it's not
to say there aren't a lot of good things going
on that could lend themselves to a win over a
Detroit team that scares the Bejesus out of me no
(54:19):
matter what it just does. And I really do think
they're on a collision course for the Super Bowl, and
I think unfortunately, with everything the way it is right now,
especially that offensive line, Texan's gonna find that out the
hard way.
Speaker 5 (54:30):
Coming up on Sunday Night, The eighteen on Sports Talk
seven ninety.
Speaker 2 (54:38):
All down the thunder, Well, now you got it, ad.
Speaker 1 (54:41):
I'm glenting, fat Adam Wexford, All right, plan let go
The eighteen continues on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 4 (54:53):
Some of the things worthy of getting into here.
Speaker 3 (54:55):
Briefly, we will have a good beat and the ugly
coming up in our signature segment. And about fifteen minutes
it's the NFL trade deadline day tomorrow, so we'll have
a chance to do that.
Speaker 4 (55:04):
There's a deadline today.
Speaker 2 (55:05):
It just passed.
Speaker 3 (55:06):
The last fifteen minutes or so on the Major League
Baseball side, the exclusive negotiating window for the Astros and
their free agent Alex Bregman and elsewhere around the league
in the similar situations, that window is closed. The Astros
did what we all expected they would do. They did
extend a qualifying offer to Alex Bregman. Essentially that nets
(55:27):
them a compensatory selection if he signs elsewhere, which is
an absolute possibility, he would have to decline the qualifying offer,
which would be for a one year deal over twenty
million dollars a season. He will decline that and sign
a long term contract with somebody, and this doesn't preclude
(55:49):
that somebody from being the Houston Astros. They did not
extend a qualifying offer to any other players of theirs.
They also made a host of other roster moves. They
had some forty man roster issues, considering the players on
the sixty day il essentially have to be put back
into put back on the forty man, so they had
(56:10):
to make several moves in order to make that all happen,
and they did those things, which actually sent a few
players elsewhere. A couple of players that were waived have
been claimed by other teams. Dray Cabbage is with the
Pirates organization. Now Seth Martinez is with the Diamondbacks. Penn
Murphy you ended up not pitching for the Astros after
they added him last offseason, knowing he was still recovering
(56:33):
from surgery. He did throw in a minor league game
for them when he thought he might come back and didn't.
He was claimed by the Chicago White Sox. Jose Orkety
Oliver Ortega were both outrighted off the forty man roster.
They both cleared waivers and are now free agents. So
Jose Orkeaty is a player like Murphy who had significant
(56:55):
surgery Tommy John surgery. He's not likely to pitch any
time over the first four or maybe five months of
this upcoming season, and now he does not have a
team to which he has a contract with JP Franz,
Luis Garcia, Christian Javier Lance, Piccolo's Junior Bennett Sussa. All
pitchers were all added back returned to the forty man
(57:16):
roster after their stints on the sixty day IL.
Speaker 4 (57:19):
It's not relevant to their returns.
Speaker 3 (57:21):
They're all on different schedules, but that's how the sixty
day IL works. And they also traded for an outfielder,
Taylor Trammel from the Yankees for cash considerations. He's long
been one of the players that has nothing left to
prove at the Triple A level, but has been unable
(57:41):
to cement a spot on a major league roster for
a couple of years.
Speaker 4 (57:46):
Now. Astros have played against him on occasion, and they'll
see if he's somewhat of an answer in their very
uncertain outfields. As long as your name is not Kyle Tucker.
Speaker 2 (57:56):
Or Guardan Alvarez or Wan Soto Jess just kidding.
Speaker 4 (58:00):
It's unsettled.
Speaker 3 (58:01):
He and Alex Bregman and Blake Snell and others, Yo
spe Kakucci. He's a little further down the list, but
those are probably the three names very close to the
top of the list. Garrett Cole situation is, I was
just about to get to that just to tease, and
I think we all figured that it would be he
opted out of his deal when he signed it.
Speaker 4 (58:20):
About halfway through it.
Speaker 3 (58:21):
There was a player opt out with essentially would force
the Yankees into that last year, which was an option year.
If I opt out, well, you can prevent it by
just giving me that additional year at thirty six million,
or we can at that point in time renegotiate a
new long term contract. The latter, which I just said,
is almost assuredly what the Yankees have in store. Reportedly
(58:43):
he is not going anywhere else. They're working towards that.
Speaker 4 (58:46):
One of those two solutions will keep Garrett Cole in
the pinstripes.
Speaker 2 (58:50):
He's uh thirty four, nowhere near the end of his prime. Well,
that's where I want to get at. When when does
that start because.
Speaker 3 (59:02):
It probably changed because it was hurt. I think it
started because of that.
Speaker 2 (59:09):
So you know, and you know why I'm bringing this up.
The obvious is that you've got a guy here in
Houston that it went quick six years later, right justin
Berlander was just when the cy young. I know, and
that's what I was about to say it. I don't
know if Garrett Cole is going to be like, he's
(59:31):
got how many more years left in this deal? Now
to five?
Speaker 3 (59:34):
It's hard to say because I don't know exactly how
they'll make the solution, but it would be five if
that's how they want to beat That's one way it
could be.
Speaker 2 (59:40):
I mean, this is their best picture by far.
Speaker 4 (59:44):
Yes, the picture you would want on the mound with
a five to nothing lead in an elimination game of
the World.
Speaker 2 (59:48):
Series, absolutely expecting to cover first or at least get
his well.
Speaker 3 (59:52):
His pitching became an issue after he didn't cover first.
I just didn't put hitters away. And they are parts
of his statistics that are telling you this strikeout numbers
are slightly down. He obviously threw way fewer games than
he normally would. You know, the guys never had a
season of less than nineteen starts other than the COVID
(01:00:13):
year when he made every start all twelve until this year,
until he goes from age thirty four to or age
thirty three to thirty four. He turned thirty four late
in the season. Well, why would it go Why would
his clock all of a sudden turned backwards? He played,
He had an unhealthy year for one of the first
times in his career at age thirty three now thirty four,
(01:00:33):
and he pitched extra after that because they went deep
into the playoffs. I'm not expecting him to deliver better
seasons for them when you consider, forget the health side
of it. He had a three forty ere a one
point one, twenty six whip strikeout numbers, we're at nine
point four, the worst.
Speaker 4 (01:00:51):
They've been since he left the Pirates. The trends aren't
even going in the right direction, let alone the injury.
Speaker 2 (01:00:57):
Now you sound like when you were earlier this season
talking about Alex Bregman. He did have a strong enough
second half of the season. His trends to me have
kind of been the same.
Speaker 3 (01:01:06):
He had the first four plus years of his career,
awesome MVP candidate, nine hundred ops and now the last
five years of his career are trying to get to
eight hundred ops. Have an eight hundred OPS season. I
think this year's weird because he intentionally did things differently.
Speaker 4 (01:01:24):
I don't know why.
Speaker 3 (01:01:25):
I don't know if it was because of a walk here,
because it was the team he was with and what
they needed from him. His walk rate doesn't just change
like it did. His walk rate was awful this year.
It was like that body experience was he just wasn't
the same because but his production ended up being close,
not too far off. Mostly, I don't think we've seen
a big drop off year after year. We saw a
drop off four or five years ago to where he's
(01:01:48):
he's not an MVP candidate. He's not your best offensive player.
The team he signs with, do you think he's going
to be their best offensive player?
Speaker 2 (01:01:54):
Well not if they're wanting to win.
Speaker 4 (01:01:56):
Well, that's a good way to put it.
Speaker 3 (01:01:58):
If you sign him and that is your best offensive player,
either you have five guys just like him, or you're
probably the next tier off.
Speaker 2 (01:02:07):
Doesn't get hurt and keeps going the way he was going.
And that's a big if because he missed so much
time with that.
Speaker 4 (01:02:13):
Bruce Bone Bruce.
Speaker 2 (01:02:15):
Yeah, I mean, you know, you're on Alvarez, Kyle Tucker.
Speaker 4 (01:02:23):
At no point failure here was he their best offensive player.
Speaker 2 (01:02:26):
That's what I'm saying. I'm trying to find out where
you would be really good right now.
Speaker 3 (01:02:30):
Yeah, at the end of the year, if if you
add Tucker to the healthy mix and you consider him
as he was, I would probably have still had him third. Right,
he's behind Alvarez and Tucker and ahead of.
Speaker 2 (01:02:39):
Al I think those are interchangeable parts. Because whatever month
it was, Altuve could have been lapping him. This year.
I mean early on there's slow starts from Alex Bregman,
and then there's does he have a pulse today? Yeah?
Speaker 3 (01:02:53):
That was That was the other thing that was new
to him, and the whole team was like that for
two months. His other slow starts were like, man, man,
that's bad. And then this year's slow start was hold
my beer. Yeah it was, Oh it's July.
Speaker 2 (01:03:04):
Well, I guess I should start playing now, because that's
about the time he started to turn around.
Speaker 3 (01:03:08):
Last year he hit and again batting, you have it,
you take it for what it's worth. Last year he
hit two sixty two. The year before that, he hit
two fifty nine. This year he hit two sixty. He
is OPR slugging two years ago four fifty four, slugging
this year four fifty three. The numbers for the last
five years very very similar.
Speaker 2 (01:03:28):
There.
Speaker 3 (01:03:29):
Maybe this part's a little different, that part's a little different,
but overall ops plus ops, they're they're basically he's been
the same player for five years, which is really good,
but not probably the guy that's carrying your offense. And
I actually don't think he's he's gonna get paid what
he's earned.
Speaker 2 (01:03:47):
As I say, it's not the guy who's gonna get
two hundred plus million by far. No.
Speaker 3 (01:03:50):
And I think a couple of interesting pieces over the
last couple of days. Won an article and one from
Ari Alexander over on KPRC channel too. I actually talked
him about that before it it aired, and now I
think everybody has seen it.
Speaker 4 (01:04:03):
And then did he tell you who the executives were?
Speaker 2 (01:04:06):
Not? Agents?
Speaker 4 (01:04:06):
No sources, man, I know.
Speaker 3 (01:04:09):
But then there was also the piece in the Athletic
where there were some projections. I really kind of went
through it, and we want to get into those things.
I went through it to see where Justin Verlander was
going to be projected. Deal, just one person's opinion based
on people he's talk to.
Speaker 2 (01:04:26):
One year. Twelve million, Yeah, and that's where not a
winning organization.
Speaker 3 (01:04:32):
It wasn't specific to who. Well do you think you
shouldn't say that? Well, do you think just a winning organization?
Speaker 2 (01:04:36):
Okay, well what winning organizations? I know it's that's basically
Michael Brantley his last year here with a winning organization. Yeah,
but how much of that did he play and contribute?
Speaker 4 (01:04:46):
So that's fine? But just I know, Justin likes money.
I like money. You like right, you like money? But
what do we always talk about the money? He's playing
to win?
Speaker 2 (01:04:52):
Yeah, but you you have to pay him to get him,
and the Astros paid that money and they ain't even
get Michael Brantley. So what what I'm saying is what
winning organization that's presumably been responsible unless you're the Dodgers
and the Yankees and you just spin Willy Nilly has
twelve million laying around to give a guy who's gonna
give you a sub five ERA, Yeah, he'll probably be
(01:05:14):
better than that. Okay, four fifty. I mean, he was
awful this year.
Speaker 3 (01:05:18):
That we're negotiating as era. Well, what can we do
to get you into a four to twenty five.
Speaker 2 (01:05:24):
I'm not Scott Boris, I just play him on the radio.
Scott Boris is very, very wealthy, and he's about to
get even more so this offseason.
Speaker 5 (01:05:33):
The eighteen on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 2 (01:05:37):
Basement five for five. Hey, it's Craig Vigio.
Speaker 4 (01:05:41):
Listen to the Home of the Astros in your home.
Speaker 6 (01:05:43):
Just tell your smart speaker play Sports Talk seven ninety
on iHeartRadio.
Speaker 1 (01:05:49):
Now the good, good, the bad, that's not good, and
the ugly that's getting real ugly.
Speaker 5 (01:05:58):
With the eighteen.
Speaker 3 (01:06:01):
Signature segment time halfway through the program through six weekdays.
Here on Sports Talk seven ninety, we do it throughout
the week. It's not for the good, the bad, and
the ugly. You pick any individual event from the weekend,
it probably has all three in it, especially when it's sports.
Got some things going on over the course of the
week that might be good, bad, or ugly. We divvy
(01:06:23):
them up among the three of us. I will take
the good. Dan has the bad, ACU can handle the ugly.
Speaker 2 (01:06:30):
But can I just get mine out of the way
since we all know what it is.
Speaker 3 (01:06:33):
Yeah, signature segment today here on a Monday edition of
the eighteen The Ugly, Bad and Good Go Ahead get
A started with the mean, you know what I'm gonna say, Uh, well,
the Texans didn't play, So no, I don't know what
you're gonna say.
Speaker 2 (01:06:45):
I thought it's Texans edition.
Speaker 3 (01:06:47):
I mean, no, matter what I didn't say, you couldn't
see I don't I am. I've been with you all
these years, and I still can't always follow along. Well,
ye're actually right in there. Texans a day only. Please
use Texans. I thought I had to spell it out right,
and then we kept doing it, and then people would
still stray from it.
Speaker 4 (01:07:05):
So I just way, I just left it open. There's
no definition of what we need to do.
Speaker 2 (01:07:11):
And now I've left it open, and now you come
back at me with I thought it was Texans only.
How do you think my parents have even played in
four days? How do you think my parents felt raising
me with this ad D my whole life that was
never medicated because my dad was very much against that.
And I'm glad.
Speaker 4 (01:07:26):
Okay, yeah, what what could possibly be ugly about the Texans?
Speaker 2 (01:07:30):
They're offensively Okay, y'all go ahead as you were.
Speaker 3 (01:07:33):
Well, we'll keep with the same of going backwards. That way,
I get to uplift everybody with the good. Right, So
go ahead, Dan do the bad right in the middle
where it always was.
Speaker 6 (01:07:43):
Well, I mean I did have something that was non
Texans related, so I guess I could go ahead and
make heads explain we can.
Speaker 2 (01:07:48):
Do what we want here.
Speaker 3 (01:07:49):
We just make up the rules as we go. It's
a wildcard, man, there we go. All right, everybody makes
their own rules.
Speaker 2 (01:07:53):
It's fine. Texas A and M learning they were not
ready for prime time.
Speaker 4 (01:07:58):
So what's the bad part?
Speaker 7 (01:08:00):
Oh?
Speaker 6 (01:08:00):
I mean, you know, just to all of the lipsmacking
that was happening with their fan base, and then they
go up to Columbia, South Carolina and get pasted by
twenty four points.
Speaker 3 (01:08:08):
This program, you're you're not delivering it the right way.
You're delivering it like it's good. You sound extremely happy
about it.
Speaker 6 (01:08:14):
No, it was bad for them because I mean I'm
hearing from everybody that they're gonna win the SEC. Oh,
you know, the program is built. You won one good game, like,
you have to sustain this if you're going to do it.
So bad behavior is where I'm going with this, Biaggi fans,
what if they finished.
Speaker 3 (01:08:31):
Nine to three prior to bowl games or whatever else,
do you think they've accomplished anything will because.
Speaker 6 (01:08:37):
It's pretty much it's pretty much status quo with what
they've been doing. It is, yes, oh like that to
them is what Again? They don't really understand what being
a good championship winning program, what it takes, and how
much time it takes to go into it. That they
win a game like against LSU and all of a
sudden they act like they've won the SEC and things
(01:08:59):
are going just completely in the right direction for them.
Speaker 2 (01:09:03):
Yes, you have to do it lot. I get that.
Speaker 3 (01:09:05):
I get that, But nine and three is not nothing.
I don't I don't think anybody would view that as nothing.
Speaker 2 (01:09:11):
It's a step in the right direction. But that's the point.
Speaker 3 (01:09:14):
Well, they fired their coach because they couldn't even get
to nine and three in any.
Speaker 2 (01:09:18):
Of the last three seasons. It's bowl eligible. They went
to a bowl in its last year, and that bowl
eligible without him. I guess yes.
Speaker 3 (01:09:29):
They won six games with him and then won one
more with their interim coach.
Speaker 4 (01:09:35):
I mean, I know what you're saying.
Speaker 3 (01:09:36):
I'm not even try to disagree, but there's a reason
why Jimbo's not there because they were consistently not winning
even seventy five percent of their games, let alone how
they finished in the SEC, which is to say again
each of the last three years at or below five hundred.
They will probably do both of those things. On the
right side, they're probably gonna get nine wins. The opportunity
(01:09:56):
to get more is still there with three these three
games remaining. Uh, and they probably will finish with a
better than five hundred record in a new conference with
one really.
Speaker 4 (01:10:08):
Good new team.
Speaker 3 (01:10:09):
And then, oh you, I'm not saying their programs built
like they are. And that's the angle of it again
for you is very good, not bad at all. You
could not be enjoying this anymore. And I don't blame
you one bit, but I don't I don't have if
I'm if I'm an outsider or an insider, I don't
know what there is to be disappointed about, even off
(01:10:32):
of their performance this weekend. Like unless you anticipate another
loss before the Longhorn game, why the two teams that
are playing Camp beat them? Why would they beat them?
Because it's the SEC? Like the way that some people
talk about the SEC is.
Speaker 2 (01:10:52):
Maddening don't you feel better? Yeah, so ridiculous. If you
were a Longhorns fan and you were in the back
of your mind, and don't tell me some of you weren't.
If you're being honest with yourselves and you were thinking
that Aggie game looks a little bit dicey. It does
look dicey. You feel less like that now, it's or
do you just think that the Aggies had a bad week.
Speaker 4 (01:11:14):
They didn't have a bad week.
Speaker 3 (01:11:15):
South Carolina is just the type of team that people
in the SEC want to remind people outside the SEC
has they're good. They just don't beat Alabama and Georgia
and LSU every year, so they lose four or five
or six games every year. So if you've watched South
Carolina play football this year and you don't think they're
good or really good.
Speaker 4 (01:11:35):
Potential, you're just not paying I know what you're saying.
Speaker 3 (01:11:39):
What I'm saying is what they did this weekend, which
was the game slowly got away from them at the
end of the game. The scoreboard looks much much wider
than it should, but without it, we probably don't have
Shane Biemer having the whole team sing to his wife,
not the happy birthday song, but a much better song.
Speaker 2 (01:11:54):
Yeah, that was pretty cool. I just.
Speaker 3 (01:11:59):
The idea that you don't know what you're in for
kind of stuff. And it got even worse because Texas
was on the wrong side of the scoreboard in a
game they clearly could have won and clearly belong on
the field with the team that throws three interceptions every
single game. Now, Georgia, I mean, they're fine, And in
my opinion, the Aggie's in the SEC was exactly what
(01:12:20):
I thought it would be when they got there. It
was the smartest decision that program ever made. It's why
Texas was dying to join them.
Speaker 2 (01:12:26):
Win to fall of cash, phenomenal facilities, massive support from boosters, and.
Speaker 3 (01:12:32):
Inability to constantly stay near the top of the SEC.
Now Texas has done none of those things, yet they
don't have the even the opportunity to do that. Interesting
that today someone I had asked coach Sark, is the
idea that a title game, a conference title game, is
really not that important anymore because of the College Football Playoff,
the fact that it's twelve teams. He said, well, not
(01:12:53):
around here. It's very important. That is our goal our
first year here. We want to go out there and
win the title. I can't wait for the math. It's
time to the tie breakers when multiple teams finish with
the same number of losses at the end of the year.
And it's not just the SEC that's going to face this.
There's a several conferences that may face this as they
get there. But you know, they won nine games the
(01:13:14):
Aggies back to the Bad Aggies. They won nine games
in the COVID season, won the Orange Bowl to get
that ninth win. That's the only time since twenty eighteen
they've had a nine win season. I would feel extremely
confidence say they're about to have another one. That seems like,
as you said, a step in the right direction.
Speaker 2 (01:13:34):
So who's winning A and M or Texas not there yet?
Speaker 7 (01:13:38):
Oh?
Speaker 3 (01:13:38):
Okay, okaypen Neither team is definitively going to have the
same starting quarterback that they currently do.
Speaker 4 (01:13:46):
Reid got the start obviously for A and M.
Speaker 3 (01:13:48):
Their offense wasn't quite what they needed to be put well,
I mean Wellman's play Wigman has played so inconsistently, I
don't know what they're going to be when they get there.
And again, if there's no injury to yours or he's
fully healthy from the previous injury. He's still probably going
to be the starter when they get there, but doesn't
mean Archie won't see some playing time. All that being said,
(01:14:11):
when we go in reverse order, sometimes you don't even
get to the good, which doesn't look like we're gonna
get to.
Speaker 2 (01:14:17):
So when we come back, we'll get the good from
not necessarily the Texans, but it could be the Texans
from over the weekend and moving forward. As we wrap
up the four o'clock hour, next.
Speaker 5 (01:14:30):

Speaker 1 (01:15:03):
Adam Clinton and Adam Wexler, the A Team now continues,
and now.
Speaker 2 (01:15:15):
After much waiting and suspense and anticipation, we finally get
to the good from the good, the bad, and the
ugly from the Texans loss from four days ago.
Speaker 3 (01:15:26):
Yeah, this is not really specific to what technically only
happened this weekend or unfolded this weekend. But for as
much as the Texans are troubled because of their own
offensive line issues and their past protection issues, essentially looking
around this division is just beautiful. The Indianapolis Colts made
(01:15:47):
the bold, I guess decision to say, look, our locker
room is too full of talent for us to just
kick this season away and call it a learning year
for Anthony Richardson. So they made the change a quarterback.
They got Joe Fly and said, look, this is your team,
not just today, but every day. You're a quarterback the
rest of the way. And his offense went out there
(01:16:09):
and you know, fumbled on their opening possession. That was him,
a couple of punts, mister field goal came out after
halftime and well, they did have the ball once in
the third quarter.
Speaker 4 (01:16:18):
They didn't score on that drive either.
Speaker 3 (01:16:20):
Then he threw an interception, Then he led a two
yard and three yard field goal drive and they lost
twenty one to thirteen. That's a good team they played
a granted, but I think they were expecting a little
bit more offense. Jonathan Taylor couldn't get anything done, and
his passing game was he didn't have as many incompletions,
(01:16:41):
but he didn't have a lot of yards either, and
he's not gonna get any yards running the football.
Speaker 4 (01:16:46):
In fact, he lost yards running the football.
Speaker 3 (01:16:48):
So you can't just dismiss fifty plus yards or running
for first downs by Anthony Richardson just added to his
total yards per game.
Speaker 4 (01:16:56):
Well, this is what Joe does.
Speaker 3 (01:16:58):
So their quarterback situation is obvious not a real good one. Again,
no change in the other two spots. Tennessee is not
even worth talking about their quarterback. The future is probably
not on their roster. They won another week with Mason Rudolph,
and he is Mason Rudolph. They did win, but they
also played the Patriots and they allowed them to tie
the game on the last play of regulation.
Speaker 2 (01:17:17):
Just a purse over eleven seconds.
Speaker 7 (01:17:20):
Yep.
Speaker 3 (01:17:20):
Well, they sent three guys and you're not going to
get to a quarterback in the NFL very often.
Speaker 2 (01:17:24):
That's true. The Texans did it very often.
Speaker 3 (01:17:26):
Okay, the Texans were smart and how they did it,
and it also wasn't fifteen yards from the end zone.
Speaker 4 (01:17:31):
It was fifty. So their situation is what it is.
Speaker 3 (01:17:35):
But I do think the situation in Jacksonville, it gets
gooder by the moment. It's been good for several years.
It started off as good as it can get because
Urban Frick and Meyer was there, and you thought maybe
it's less good because Doug Peterson arrived. And then there
was a postseason not long after that, and there was
a massive postseason comeback victory after that. They had a
(01:18:00):
the makings of a comeback victory in yesterday's game. Because boy,
I know there's coaches that are gonna get fired, but
Nick Sirianni.
Speaker 2 (01:18:09):
Is trying to get fired.
Speaker 3 (01:18:11):
I don't know what Philadelphia is doing in some of
these games with the decisions that the head coach is
asked to make. Go for one, here, go for two, here,
go for it on fourth down. In this situation there
he makes the wrong decision. It's not the analytic decision
or it didn't work out badly. They just make the
wrong decision seemingly every time. No way, the Jaguars should
(01:18:32):
have been in that game down twenty two to nothing
in the third quarter, but they were. I don't know
how they called that Saquon Barkley fumble of fumble and
again another angle might help and maybe the officials. Another
game ac where the officials had to acquiesce to a
pool reporter, the dean of officials, they don't get to.
Speaker 4 (01:18:50):
Talk to the individual officials doing that.
Speaker 3 (01:18:52):
But they called out a fumble and it was the
second touchdown in a span of fifteen seconds for the Jaguars,
and they did make a game of it. But I'll
say it again and as many times as it's pertinent
to your Houston Texans chances of seeing the playoffs every year,
Trevor Lawrence is bad. He is a bad NFL quarterback.
(01:19:15):
And I don't know what Jacksonville is going to do
besides fire Doug Peterson soon.
Speaker 4 (01:19:19):
But Lawrence is bad.
Speaker 2 (01:19:21):
Bad quarterbacks get head coaches fired. But the problem is
once you fire him and bringing in another coach or
give the interim guy the tag or whatever you're gonna do,
he's still gonna be bad.
Speaker 3 (01:19:32):
Jaguars host the Vikings next week, Colts host the Bills
next week. The Titans are on the road at the Chargers.
And I mentioned this earlier. I know the Texans are
not favored to win. They're at home against the Lions,
no ground lost. All of these other teams, including two
that are at home, also not favored.
Speaker 2 (01:19:52):
Texans will go or the AFC South will go. Oh
for four? Next?
Speaker 4 (01:19:56):
What about these guys?
Speaker 2 (01:19:58):
I set oh for four? I didn't say OH for three.
Speaker 3 (01:20:00):
Okay, you think they're all gonna live? That's you're good
for today. For the week, we will hit you with
our other signature segments. So over the remainder of the week,
as we always do, and bring you the end of
the week, a not too satisfying addition for me, very
satisfying for you, guys.
Speaker 4 (01:20:17):
Just don't call it locks. By the way, yours isn't
even over yet.
Speaker 2 (01:20:20):
I know. Well, that's why I was gonna get to
the Chiefs. Not surprisingly, they're at home. They're always at home.
They play every week at home.
Speaker 4 (01:20:26):
Are they in primetime tonight?
Speaker 2 (01:20:27):
They are? Well, I mean, if they're going to play
in prime time, they've got to be at home. They're
not going to have them play on the road. Bucks
are going to win this game tonight. I'm ready to
say it right now.
Speaker 4 (01:20:36):
Well, there's one team in the NFL with one loss, right,
m hmm. They lost to the Bucks. M hm.
Speaker 2 (01:20:43):
So there's one team in the NFL that's undefeated. They
play the Bucks. I just I mean, yeah, the Chiefs
have been finding ways to win every single week. But
that's just it. They've been finding ways to win. They
haven't just rolled out and dominated anybody that I can remember.
I know that.
Speaker 3 (01:21:04):
I know the game with their largest win was over
the Saints, which only about thirteen points. I mean that
they've yet to score thirty points themselves in the game
this year, right, don't I know this? Yet to allow
thirty points, yet to allow more than twenty five.
Speaker 2 (01:21:19):
I mean they squeaked by the Bengals, who I don't
even know what the Bengals.
Speaker 4 (01:21:25):
Bengals are.
Speaker 3 (01:21:26):
They make a few too many mistakes across their both
offense and defense. They have too much talent to have
the record they do well because they got off to
an awful start while Joe Burrow was playing well. Now
they're winning games while Joe Burrow is playing well. He's
been really.
Speaker 4 (01:21:39):
Good this year.
Speaker 2 (01:21:40):
He three had a bad throw yesterday though, well how
many touchdown passes did he have? I know that five?
But I would like for the picks to not be
just egregiously awful like that one.
Speaker 3 (01:21:49):
He was he was very I'm much happier with his
performance and I have no stake in it than he was.
He was very dissatisfied. No, for sure, but they're a
wider sea. Room is just not fully healthy again, right, Well,
they scored forty one, they scored thirty eight, they scored
thirty four, they scored thirty three, and they won half
(01:22:10):
only half of those games. They've not been real good
at stopping the other team. So the Chiefs game was
a last second field goal loss. All of this is
to say that, by the way, the Bengals are going
to the playoffs is what I'm trying to say.
Speaker 2 (01:22:26):
Okay, that's fine. The Chiefs are just the most unimpressive
defending Super Bowl champion that hasn't lost in I don't
know how long. They squeaked by the Ravens by a
toe to open the year. They literally squeaked by the Bengals.
They won by a point, and that's when the Bengals
(01:22:46):
weren't even I don't know. The Bengals haven't been consistent
at the very least all year long, and they've been
bad a lot of the year. Beat a Falcons team
on the road, beat a Chargers team on the road,
but not neither of those were particularly impress of. Beating
the Saints does nothing for me, especially now at forty
nine Ers. You get that win, well, who wasn't hurt
(01:23:07):
for them in that game?
Speaker 6 (01:23:08):
Wow?
Speaker 2 (01:23:09):
And then you beat the Raiders by a touchdown. Worst
thirteen game winning streak.
Speaker 4 (01:23:13):
In the NFL ever.
Speaker 2 (01:23:16):
But that doesn't know, you can't say that.
Speaker 4 (01:23:18):
They find a way to win.
Speaker 2 (01:23:20):
Well, they keep doing it. Thirteen game winn Really, they.
Speaker 3 (01:23:23):
Won their last two games last year. They won four
more in the playoffs. They've won all their games this year.
That's like your your whole Yes, it's a third argument.
I don't think they're very good, but they never lose.
I don't think they're very good this year, but they
never lose. They're going to tonight and I already called it.
I called my shot. I can't just say that and
then say, oh, well, yeah, they'll probably beat the books.
Speaker 2 (01:23:45):
You know, though, I could see them winning this game
and then losing to the broncos O bone Nicks tearing
up that defense.
Speaker 4 (01:23:53):
I could see it.
Speaker 2 (01:23:53):
But I'll just close my eyes that way, it won't happen.
Speaker 5 (01:23:58):
The eighteen Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 3 (01:24:02):
Eyes wide open for enjoying that I is called refreshing
bud Light with your football. No, people had a good
time in the bud Light backyard section over at Cooog's
game this past Saturday. Happy to help get them there,
And I know like they do, like I do, enjoy

(01:24:25):
the afternoon. Get those special editions bud Light, Houston Texans
Cans ready for your tailgate again, Easy to Sunday, Easy

Speaker 1 (01:24:37):
Two lifelong Houston sports guys named Adham talking your teams,
Adam Clinton and Adam Wexler.
Speaker 5 (01:24:46):
R the A team Am.
Speaker 3 (01:24:55):
All those whistles and screaming and yelling me you forgot
that part on it, the football at five portion of
the program.
Speaker 4 (01:25:02):
I always bring it is underway. You do always bring it.
Speaker 2 (01:25:05):
I mean, I am just you're in awe of the
grunting that I do on the show. I feel blessed.
Speaker 4 (01:25:10):
I feel blessed, blessed. You see this right there on
Space City Home Network.
Speaker 3 (01:25:14):
You're listening to this right here, on Sports Talk seven
ninety and we've got football at five for you. Clearly,
we spent a lot of time on a matchup that
certainly does not look favorable for the Texans. Remember, they
were not favored to win on Thursday night, and they
did not. They are not favored to win on Sunday night,
and we have to focus in on their own issues initially,
whether it's injury or offensive line.
Speaker 4 (01:25:36):
And Monday of a normal game week.
Speaker 3 (01:25:38):
Now after giving the players off Friday, Saturday and Sunday
back in the building to get prepared for a Detroit
Lions team, and again, more of this is still about themselves.
I think this team, and I've thought this, nothing changed
this entire year. If the Texans are right, if the
Texans are doing what they're just what they're supposed to do,
I don't think there's a team in the NFL that
(01:26:00):
they can't go out and beat, and certainly here in Houston,
their chances of doing that are enhanced. Having the best
team in the NFC come to town lessons those chances,
But maybe having a little bit fuller roster would slide
it back in the proper direction. Will Anderson Junior played
just a handful of plays, just eight snaps in the
game on Thursday night because of the ankle injury he
(01:26:20):
suffered when he was rolled up on by Neville Hewitt.
The Texans are hopeful that some injured players from their
ir can return. They did open the practice window twenty
one day practice window for both Jerry Hughes edge and
Jeff Okuda cornerback.
Speaker 2 (01:26:37):
They're hopeful on the Nego Collins front.
Speaker 4 (01:26:40):
And with it being a normal game week now on
a Monday, heading to Sunday night's game with the Lions,
we got a chance to hear from talk to the
head coach Tamiko o' ryan.
Speaker 3 (01:26:52):
So a couple of things from him. Well, I think
we're gonna be able to rapid fire through a couple
of these. What's the status there, coach on a Will Anderson.
Speaker 7 (01:27:00):
Yeah, we're still evaluating Will see how he progresses throughout
the week.
Speaker 4 (01:27:06):
What about Nico, Yeah, we'll continue.
Speaker 7 (01:27:10):
To evaluate Nico throughout the week, see where he see
where he is.
Speaker 3 (01:27:15):
Ohokey, well, you told us that Kenyon Green is out
for the year. What do you think will it'll look
like on the offensive line and.
Speaker 7 (01:27:22):
We'll see who steps up at the offensive line. Position.
We'll see who steps up, see how we go out
there and get the job done.
Speaker 4 (01:27:30):
Can I get a little more from you on the
offense in general, what they're still doing well, maybe what
you think needs to change with how they're able to
move the football.
Speaker 7 (01:27:41):
Yeah, for us, we've done a great job of moving
the ball to get you know, across midfield. And I'm
you know, very encouraged with that progress of us moving
the football because we can't move it when we need to.
It's just when we've gotten across midfield, we hadn't been
able to you know, get points. You know, those red
zone opportunity one of these they come up very slim,
(01:28:02):
you know, in games, and when we are there, of course,
we want to capitalize and be better. We haven't been
really good in the red zone and on third down
right where you sustain those drives and score points. So
that's been a focus. We understand that, and we understand
we have to make some adjustments and put our guys
in a better position to score points.
Speaker 3 (01:28:23):
I will get back to you for more stuff if
we need it later, but I appreciate the lengthy answer
on that. So we'll see on will we'll see on
Nico we'll see on the offensive line.
Speaker 2 (01:28:30):
You feel good about will playing, do you not.
Speaker 3 (01:28:34):
I wouldn't necessarily say that I don't. I don't have
enough information yet. I've not heard from anyone that I
think might know on where things stand. I feel, honestly,
even with the lack of a statement on Nico Collins,
we'll be back, although I do expect to see him
on the field face yeah, I feel better about him
coming out to play on Sunday night.
Speaker 2 (01:28:52):
I guess the reason this might sound just ridiculously optimistic,
even for me, but I just feel like if it
were as serious as something that would keep him out
this week, especially with a few extra days between games,
that he wouldn't have been doing drills over on the
sideline that night. And I know that sounds so like basic,
but I'm being serious.
Speaker 3 (01:29:13):
No, if you were like a couple of weeks ago
before the Jets game, so I guess a Sunday ago,
eight days ago, Kaitln Bullock left the game with the
shoulder injury. He went into the tent, he went into
the locker room, and then he returned to the game.
He played in the game, and obviously he did have
a shoulder injury. He had ice on it after the
game and then he played four days later, so not
identical to will he was doing. He was working with
(01:29:36):
the athletic training staff on the sidelines, trying to see
what could he still do with that ankle, and then
he got four more snaps.
Speaker 4 (01:29:43):
He played four play.
Speaker 3 (01:29:43):
He's hurt on the fourth play of the game, ended
up coming back for four more plays and no plays
in the second half, though he stayed in uniform. I
guess in the instance that they were in some dire
straits with bodies never came to pass, which is a
good thing. But yes, there's usually bodes well for the
up coming week, and it's, as you noted, Thursday to
the ensue or following Sunday is three extra days. So
(01:30:06):
maybe there's a little bit of a chance in that regard.
And I do think they're gonna try to be as
careful as they can. And I was, you know, when
you consider the trade deadline and what they're after versus well,
we know they're gonna they have draft assets to move,
they have barring injury and Will is won. Their defensive
line is loaded. They have players I think other teams
(01:30:30):
might want. It's I am hopeful that Jerry Hughes is
healthy enough to be somebody that somebody would maybe add
in part of a deal. But he's the back end
of a roster guy, so I'm not sure if I'm
just saying it to say that someone would desire him
as part of a trade. You're gonna have to give
up a pick, I'm sure anyway, if you're adding an
offensive lineman. But with autry back, I mean, you can
(01:30:50):
still trade Mario Edwards Junior, even though he has two
more games to serve on his suspension. But they have
eleven defensive players on that line that all played well
this year. They're not gonna carry They don't carry eleven
players into any games. They certainly can't when Want is suspended,
and that's been the case all year. You don't carry
ten either. These are players that are superfluous to their roster,
(01:31:11):
and I do think there might be an opportunity to
not have to give up as much in draft capital potential,
or maybe there is a back end of your roster
guy on the offensive line for a back end of
the roster guy at our position of depth opportunity before
tomorrow's mid afternoon deadline, mid a team show deadline.
Speaker 2 (01:31:29):
Is it Yeah, it's good. By the way, you're gonna
have to keep it right here. Is it easy to
just say left guard is the most obvious? Yes, But
wouldn't you just go after the best offensive lineman available
via trade if the rest of your line is not
that great either outside of left tackle. You see what
(01:31:49):
I'm saying, Like I Gues.
Speaker 3 (01:31:50):
You're saying, if there is a right tackle that you
think approves your team immensely or enough, then you take
it and you figure out what do I want to
do with Titus Howard, Jack Mason, Juice Scruggs, Kendrick Green,
and maybe a healthy We didn't mention Jared Patterson, hopefully
is moving forward through the concussion protocol. He would certainly
be an option if that position is better, and you
(01:32:13):
might be able to find a right tackle this better
than Titus Hour.
Speaker 4 (01:32:16):
The point is more you're making your interior line.
Speaker 3 (01:32:19):
Better, but then you also have to be on the
in the camp that says, yeah, Titus hout on the inside,
that's an improvement. We've seen tightest play on the inside.
He's not as good a player on the inside as
he is on the outside. That's just and he's not
that great on the outside.
Speaker 2 (01:32:32):
He's good enough to get a long term, heavy salaried extension.
That doesn't mean he's good. That means somebody was being
stupid with money.
Speaker 4 (01:32:40):
Well you you what you were doing, and y'll hate it.
Speaker 3 (01:32:43):
Was saying I don't want to see my offensive line
in tatters, knowing I have C J.
Speaker 2 (01:32:48):
Stroud here.
Speaker 3 (01:32:49):
It turned out to be that way anyway, But that's
why you didn't leave yourself with the possibility that he's
out there. And it's pretty He's also been there. And
it's not saying he's been their second best lineman. If
your two tackles are your best two linemen, it's not
usually the end of the world, but it is here
because the play they've gotten on the interior has just
been so poor. And I know people have probably seen
(01:33:12):
Kendrick Green's work in the Jets game enough to realize
there was not significant improvement. There were a few more
plays they were able to execute, there were just as
many blown plays.
Speaker 4 (01:33:23):
And I don't mean from communication.
Speaker 3 (01:33:25):
I mean literally, balls snapped and you're down and the
guy ran right past you. Ball snapped, you're engaged, and
he shoved you into the No. No, longer existent pocket.
They just don't have good linemen on the interior, and
as a trio they've kind of worked in unison to
be not very good.
Speaker 2 (01:33:44):
Yeah, I just it's I'm not saying that they could
have well, they could have done some different things in
the offseason.
Speaker 3 (01:33:51):
But they could have said our line is okay, we
need to be really really good. Just look at what
they did do and say here's how it could have
been done differently. You went out and spent fifty million
on Daniel Hunter. I think you could have spent less
for longer for John Garnarden. Just brought him back.
Speaker 2 (01:34:07):
If you think he's as good and once again making
plays last night against Joe, what else you want to see?
I think he's getting his due.
Speaker 3 (01:34:13):
But my gosh, he's definitely one of the top ten
edge rushers in the NFL, especially since he's awesome against
the run again this year. But that was not a
bad decision, just a different decision you could have made.
I don't think you would have done things differently with
Deniko Audrey, but this defense hat was pretty good while
they were getting nothing from his ten million dollars a
(01:34:34):
year for two years while he was suspended he did
have the only two sacks in this last game when
Will Anderson was out, you had him doing his thing,
most of it from the interior.
Speaker 2 (01:34:42):
Imagine if they were all healthy.
Speaker 3 (01:34:44):
I don't think it was a mistake by any means
to allocate money to as he's al Shaier this past offseason.
I think we've seen his value.
Speaker 4 (01:34:51):
Unfortunately, we've only seen it for now just about half
the season, a little bit more than half the season.
You extended Nico this offseason, although money essentially is getting moved,
is in place for the next offseason. What if you
don't trade for Stefan Dicks and the contract renegotiated, restructured
to the way it was this year, and instead of
(01:35:12):
trading a second round pick, a third or fourth or
whatever it might have taken, you did that to trade
for an offensive lineman, or you spent money free agency
for an offensive lineman to make what you had as
an adequate line a much better line.
Speaker 2 (01:35:26):
Would he be making passes to, you know, lesser receivers
with that better protection, you know, yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:35:35):
He would have been making passes the same guys he
made passes to last year, Sans Noah Brown, who was
only there for roughly half the.
Speaker 4 (01:35:41):
Season with his own.
Speaker 2 (01:35:42):
If there's no Zigs and no Brown, that's still a
drop off in your offense, especially if Brevin Jordan's hurt.
Speaker 4 (01:35:49):
I wouldn't. I would actually disagree.
Speaker 3 (01:35:50):
The offensive would be better this year if their offensive
line was better and you didn't add digs, you did
add mixing and just the same year.
Speaker 2 (01:35:57):
Yeah, that's the easiest way to look at it. They'd
be better if their offensive line is better, which is
what we've been screaming since like April, some somewhere in
that range. All right, we will continue here on a
Monday edition of The A Team. It's Sports Talk seven
ninety and Space City Home Network.
Speaker 5 (01:36:14):

Speaker 1 (01:36:54):
We now return to Adam Clinton and Adam Wexwerth on
Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 3 (01:37:03):
A bunch of other things still on a Monday edition
of the show. We really haven't gotten a whole lot
into or will still be more of those coming up
in fifteen minutes or so when we get to In
case you missed it, but we'd mentioned a couple things
away from football here on the baseball side, with how
the offseason works. We knew when the Yankees gave up
their five run lead and lost the World Series that
in five days from that was the end of the
(01:37:25):
exclusive negotiating window for all the free agents that were
in the similar situation as Alex Bregman.
Speaker 4 (01:37:31):
Not normal for players to agree.
Speaker 3 (01:37:33):
To a deal during that window, and again there weren't
any the opportunity to get a compensatory draft pick by
offering those players a qualifying offer. Where that deadline came today,
thirteen players got a qualifying offer. It's a one year
deal at twenty one point five million. You can choose
to sign it if you want but that's literally what
you play for. You have a one year deal in
(01:37:56):
place for twenty one point five million. One Soda is
not gonna sign that. Alex Bregman's not going to sign that.
A bunch of other players who got it will decline it.
And the reason it's there is just so teams then
ensure themselves that they get the compensatory picks.
Speaker 6 (01:38:10):
You can't.
Speaker 3 (01:38:10):
Like I said, it can be accepted, and there could
be players on this list that ultimately feel like this
is the best they're going to do, and they actually
have two weeks to decide. You know, free agency essentially
is open. No players and agents could be talking with teams,
but no deals could be made. And now that opportunity
is wide open, this qualifying offer, you have it till
(01:38:32):
the nineteenth to make a decision whether you want accept
or decline. If you already know what offer you want elsewhere,
you decline it and you sign your deal. If you
don't know what you want and you feel like maybe
that it has become your best option this season, remember
there are a bunch of players who have in the
last couple of years, especially Boris guys who signed one
year deals or three year deals with multiple opt outs.
(01:38:54):
That's different clearly than this qualifying offer, but it ends
up could end up with the security of being rather similar.
Speaker 4 (01:39:02):
There's other players.
Speaker 3 (01:39:03):
We've barely mentioned their names because I think the locked
in status of Alex Bregman locked in on talking about him,
has precluded it. You know, Christian Walker's probably not staying
in Arizona. He's the first basement of a d H Pete.
Alonso's probably not staying in New York.
Speaker 2 (01:39:20):
Walker had re upped. No Ah, I'm crazy, then I
could have sworn I heard that he had already reupped
with them.
Speaker 3 (01:39:27):
Michael Walker reupted with the Royals this past couple of days.
Pitcher part of their starting rotation, and he got a
really nice deal for this point in his career. Anthony Santander, Tielska, Hernandez,
these guys got qualifying offers. These guys are looking for
long term money. Ti Oscar signed a one year deal
(01:39:47):
to be a Dodger. They want a World Series. They
definitely want him back, but he's going to want probably
three years, maybe four. Anthony Santander never ended up reaching
a contract extension to his liking from the Orioles.
Speaker 4 (01:40:01):
He had a monster year this past year.
Speaker 3 (01:40:03):
He can play the outfield, he can play first base,
He obviously can DH and I think we both think
his launch point from back to the seats is a
nice match for the Astros right field.
Speaker 2 (01:40:16):
Could you imagine him and Yourn in the same lineup.
Speaker 3 (01:40:20):
It would be pretty awesome because you're nukes going out
of the joint at least for one year. You'd also
have Kyle Tucker in the lineup. Right it's all In
and Alex bra They already had the two best left
handed hitters in baseball in the American League.
Speaker 2 (01:40:36):
I always forget he's left handed too.
Speaker 3 (01:40:38):
You might have three when they're doing their thing, But
there are other options that are None of them are
as good to me as Bregman, even though some of
these players offensively might have better better seasons next year,
the year after, the year after in different ways. I mean,
Santander's a different hitter. He's definitely more of the pop,
but he can hit you two sixty, I think, and
(01:40:59):
I think to have a tremendous ops.
Speaker 4 (01:41:02):
Just those are some other names that I don't probably
think it mentioned enough.
Speaker 3 (01:41:05):
I don't think the Astros have any interest in Willie
Damas for the price range that he's in probably is
a long term shortstop where he's been and I don't
think that would change. I don't think they intend on
moving Jeremy panne You to third base. I think they
probably do intend to move Bryce Matthews to third base.
Bryce probably starts the year with the Space Cowboys, where
(01:41:26):
he barely played this year.
Speaker 4 (01:41:27):
He played the very very end of the year with them.
He will be in camp with the Astros this year.
Speaker 3 (01:41:32):
I'll have every chance to get in front of the
coaches really long term for the first time. And I
do think he is probably getting his last call up
to the Astros next year. I think when he gets
called up to the Astros, and if it's not the
first time or the second time, but maybe the third
time during the season, I think that's the last time
he'll ever see minor league baseball. I think he's not
ready to start the year there, but I don't think
(01:41:54):
he's a minor league baseball player in twenty twenty six.
It's a big risk to take to not do anything
and not have Bregman. I don't think this team is
looking real strong at the corners. If next year's corners
are made up of some combination of Shay Whitcomb and
Zach Dezenzo and Bryce Matthews and etc.
Speaker 4 (01:42:14):
On down the list. John Singleton, that's probably not the
best way to produce a team that hopefully does more
than this team did last year, which was win a
bad division and not win a game in the playoffs.
Speaker 2 (01:42:27):
Well, if you're trotting that out there, then you can't
also say you care about winning. You might win more
than everyone else in your division. Maybe, I mean you
had to fend off. He had a ten game deficit
to the Mariners, the freaking Mariners. They were awful over
the balance of the year. If you look at what
(01:42:50):
the Mariners were by and large, it's actually impressive how
the Astros ever fell behind them by double digits in
the standings. But on the flipsid that, I don't think
any of us thought, I mean, we were saying it
for two almost three months. His team's way too talented
to be this bad in the standings.
Speaker 3 (01:43:07):
So when you toss out from a timing stand when
we toss out the seven to nineteen start or the
twelve and twenty four start, they had one of the
best records in baseball for a that's a.
Speaker 2 (01:43:18):
Huge chunk of the seat was with the on the
roster and without Kyle for much of it. Yeah. Well,
actually they started winning when he went down, so maybe
they should just go ahead and trade him now and
get that part over the time.
Speaker 3 (01:43:31):
Kidding, there's other guys that maybe are more than one
year guys. One year guys like Hernandez was last year,
although he was still pretty expensive, but there are probably
a few other players at the corners. You might be
able to just all right, he didn't have a market.
We can get him here for twelve million, fourteen million,
sixteen million, you know, some incentive laden deal at a
(01:43:51):
little bit lower base, and you've you've at least acknowledged
we can't do nothing. But yeah, the team doesn't likely
look better if you don't go about it that way.
You could argue they have a starting rotation ready to go.
Speaker 2 (01:44:04):
Yeahs on who's already here. They're really not worried about
the pitching. Maybe I should be more than I am,
but I'm just I don't think arrag Getty was a fluke.
I don't think Hunter Brown's turnaround was I definitely don't
think that I think Hunter Brown's gonna be the ace
of the staff, like real, real soon and opening day
I'm sorry, the second day of the season. Yeah, I mean,
(01:44:24):
unless Fronber gets traded, it could happen. It could.
Speaker 3 (01:44:28):
I mean, he's going into the last year of club
control and we don't know why figure he'll make next
year because they haven't agreed to a one year deal
and they have not gone to arbitrary s.
Speaker 2 (01:44:36):
I'd argue that, well, I definitely would argue this isn't
even out there. I would definitely argue that he's got
a much better chance of being traded this offseason than
anybody else, including Kyle Tucker. That's the only reason I
say that though with Kyle Tucker is that if you
just don't think he's going to come back, doesn't it
kind of here we go, behoove. You love using that word.
Speaker 3 (01:44:57):
Do you have some sort of like daily pull the
Sourus dictionary type thing at the house. No, just like
to use words, the fancy words on your TP three
hundred and sixty five words a day calendar.
Speaker 2 (01:45:07):
I just like to the only thing I was ever
good at in school was English when science wasn't mass
And look, you use it every day every day. I
don't even need a degree to do this, but I
have one. I just it's in this though, I should say, calm, yeah, yeah,
radio and television specifically.
Speaker 4 (01:45:27):
And what are you doing right now? Radio and TV? Man?
Speaker 2 (01:45:29):
You're killing it awesome. It's absolutely not like my degree.
Speaker 4 (01:45:32):
It's buried in the closet.
Speaker 2 (01:45:33):
What is it again?
Speaker 4 (01:45:34):
I got an a count degree? No, I think it's
a finance degree. See, I can't even remember. I feel
like you should do our taxes every year and thank you?
Why no, no, no no, And you have a degree
in it. I don't want to do that.
Speaker 2 (01:45:47):
Well, why did you go to school for it?
Speaker 6 (01:45:48):
Then?
Speaker 4 (01:45:49):
Didn't know what else to do?
Speaker 2 (01:45:50):
So you literally picked a major because you just didn't
have anything else to pick pretty much, so you just
stuck it like through something against the wall.
Speaker 4 (01:45:59):
And where do you want to go to school?
Speaker 2 (01:46:01):
I don't know. You wanted to go to ut not really?
Are you serious?
Speaker 3 (01:46:05):
Only applied to places where was the other one right
up the road Aggie Land?
Speaker 2 (01:46:11):
So you applied to the two rivals in Texas, yep.
Didn't really particularly care what your degree was in.
Speaker 3 (01:46:18):
For those that don't know, these are schools that require
a whole page as part of your application process, one
whole page and no essays.
Speaker 2 (01:46:27):
At the time.
Speaker 3 (01:46:27):
At the time, Texas is super hard to get into. Now,
as we both know, they have definitely changed the parameters.
I straight out, I mean I did go to Texas.
I think obviously. I think everybody does.
Speaker 2 (01:46:37):
That now, even graduated.
Speaker 4 (01:46:38):
I did graduate. I was in the business school because
I could at that time get into the business school
much more easily than than you can now. I just
can't believe that that's how this gmat too, all right,
But I'm like, maybe I'll maybe if I decided to
go to grad school, I might as well just take it.
Speaker 2 (01:46:58):
It's like it demon surprised me. If you're like, well,
you know, I took the bar.
Speaker 3 (01:47:02):
Then I said, what I can answer phones for Mike
and ed Absolutely, sign me up.
Speaker 2 (01:47:10):
Unbelievable. You all got to start somewhere. Look at me now.
I had a live on air audition before Tracy McGrady
scored thirteen points in thirty three seconds. What do you
have to do? Sports flashes? Oh that's nice, I'm blit.
Adam Clinton, here's your scores. Yeah that's beautiful.
Speaker 3 (01:47:27):
Yeah we still need them, don't we. I did this
on a shure your headline, here's your scoreboard update.
Speaker 4 (01:47:32):
Do you have a phone?
Speaker 2 (01:47:34):
That's it.
Speaker 4 (01:47:34):
It's the whole thing.
Speaker 2 (01:47:35):
It's kind of like meteorology.
Speaker 4 (01:47:36):
We'll get you all cut up on things.
Speaker 5 (01:47:38):
Next the A team on Sports Talk seven ninety. Hey,
Sparky from the Astros broadcast team.
Speaker 2 (01:47:50):
Catch every Astros game of Sports Talk seven ninety and iHeartRadio.
Speaker 5 (01:47:55):
App Home of your Astros.
Speaker 4 (01:48:02):
A few items to get to here either or revisit.
I mean, we've already been on for two and a
half hours.
Speaker 3 (01:48:07):
I don't know that everybody's been listening and hanging on
our every word since three o'clock. But if you did,
then you'll be hearing it for the second time or
somebody's we've not gotten into at all.
Speaker 4 (01:48:17):
First of all, in.
Speaker 3 (01:48:18):
Case you missed it, we are continuing into November the
A Team Summer of Fun.
Speaker 2 (01:48:24):
Well, the temperatures have two We have tickets to give away.
Speaker 4 (01:48:28):
We'll do that in the final segment of the show.
Speaker 2 (01:48:29):
I got in my pool this morning, not joke. It's
no joke, man, it's no joke. Did it yesterday too?
Speaker 4 (01:48:35):
Oh good for you? And the day before the concert
we have tickets too.
Speaker 2 (01:48:40):
It's a farewell tour. Oh really, who's not actually retiring,
Cyndi Lauper, That's no way.
Speaker 3 (01:48:46):
So you'll be at toy A Center November sixteenth, So
in the final segment of the show, we will have
tickets to give that giveaway to that for you. And
basketball season, well literally it has arrived. There are basketball
games all over the country and over at for Titter
Center among other places.
Speaker 2 (01:49:02):
Today the Battleground two K.
Speaker 3 (01:49:06):
Twenty four college basketball Tournament, so to speak, comes to
Toyota Center this Saturday. It features the Cougars. They've got
Jabari Smith Junior's Auburn Tigers. Also features coach Laniers Rice Owls.
They're welcoming in Florida State. So we got a pair
of tickets to that. Mattress Firm Battleground two K twenty
(01:49:28):
four College Basketball Tourney tickets are also on selling out.
Speaker 2 (01:49:32):
That's a mouthful dot com. What else do we have,
dan Well, I mean, just a constant reminder that AC
has a pool.
Speaker 5 (01:49:39):
We get it.
Speaker 2 (01:49:40):
You're cool, all right?
Speaker 6 (01:49:42):
So you touched on a little bit of the flurry
of transactions that the Astros made today. They pick up
Taylor Tremmel outfielder for cash from the New York Yankees.
They have outrighted a couple of players off their forty
man roster. Oliver Ortega and World Series hero Jose Erkeidi
no longer going to be part of the Astros. Trey Cabbage,
(01:50:02):
Seth Martinez and Penn Murphy picked up by other clubs,
and the club has added JP Franz, Luis Garcia, Christian Hobbyer,
Lance McCullers Junior, and Bennett's SUSA to the forty man roster.
Speaker 3 (01:50:14):
I have a question for you, go ahead, who is
on the list of Astro's World Series Heroes?
Speaker 4 (01:50:22):
If Jose Orkeaty is among them, as you just indicated, he.
Speaker 6 (01:50:26):
Was, Bregman Springer, Correa al Tuvey Verlander, Chazz Chazz.
Speaker 2 (01:50:33):
We just passed the anniversary of the imprint in the
warning track, and of course you weren't on.
Speaker 3 (01:50:40):
I assume if I missed it, you said, Lance, right,
Sure he didn't. Charlie Morton, Oh, absolutely, Chuck. So is
the Astros World Series Heroes? What about Marlin Gonzales? Does
it include players who A wore their uniform and b
all of the above.
Speaker 2 (01:50:58):
It did seem like a team effort, but I'm not
trying to diss Jose Rachidi. Yeah, well, okay, let's stop
right there, because I.
Speaker 4 (01:51:08):
We didn't even mention Ryan Presley and his no blown saves.
Speaker 2 (01:51:11):
Ever, he was on the mount when they clinched. But like,
and in fairness, you gotta throw Montero in there. You're
down two. Oh, going to Washington.
Speaker 4 (01:51:21):
Too, Oh, going to Washington. I'll try to remember that.
Speaker 2 (01:51:23):
Oh too, going to Washington. Yeah, what's the score, twelve
to fifteen? Anyway, you're fired. Yeah, that's that's bad. So
you don't like, I know, you had to win that
first game to even have a chance in the series,
but you did. If you get down three to one,
it's basically the same as three. Oh.
Speaker 3 (01:51:42):
All I know is whatever system they were using there
with their pitching staff, it was awesome in Washington because
the Nationals could not score in their own home ballpark
against the Astros.
Speaker 2 (01:51:50):
Well, the system Zach Greenki was using in Game seven
was awesome until he got pulled, and that goes for
him fielding to that night.
Speaker 3 (01:51:59):
Yeah, well, that was fun about this year's World Series,
as people were pointing out his status on the all
time World Series hits list.
Speaker 2 (01:52:08):
And it was better than Aaron I mean sorry, Arson.
Speaker 4 (01:52:12):
That's the reason.
Speaker 2 (01:52:13):
This fielding was also better than Garrett, who was mad
about not being brought in.
Speaker 4 (01:52:16):
What about his fielding against Aaron? Aaron dropped the ball,
That's what started the whole inning.
Speaker 2 (01:52:22):
Maybe you should have had a different center fielder, should
have been standing there.
Speaker 4 (01:52:25):
Maybe what else do we have?
Speaker 2 (01:52:26):
All Right?
Speaker 6 (01:52:26):
The Garrett Cole news over the weekend, according to ESPN,
was really about nothing, because he's going to stay with
the Yankees on the four years, one hundred and forty
four million dollar contract that he had reportedly opted out
of on Saturday.
Speaker 2 (01:52:41):
So all of this was for nothing. It's pretty much
like it didn't even happen in the first place.
Speaker 3 (01:52:45):
So you're basically saying a big show in New York
about nothing. Yeah, that's happened before.
Speaker 2 (01:52:49):
Now he can continue to pound on the Dugout scaffold
team at the same stadium with all of his other
disappointments where they've happened.
Speaker 4 (01:52:58):
He'll be fine, he'll be rich.
Speaker 2 (01:53:01):
Well, he's not gonna win when jan Soto goes to
the Dodgers and he's still there in New York and
they're worst next year, Yeah.
Speaker 4 (01:53:10):
Garrett Cole gets the again.
Speaker 3 (01:53:11):
Let's just put the just because I don't have any creativity,
We'll put the Yankees back in the.
Speaker 2 (01:53:15):
World Series against the Dodgers. What are you doing?
Speaker 3 (01:53:17):
So Garrett Cole gets the game one start because they
swept through the American League playoffs, so he's on very
good rest.
Speaker 2 (01:53:22):
He really the twenty two Astros or something.
Speaker 3 (01:53:24):
He gets the game one start and he's fully fresh,
and he's facing the opposing team's starting pitcher in Game one,
is batting leadoff sho Hey Otani. Then after Otani walks
because Garrett throws four straight balls to open the game,
Mookie Betts lays down a bunt and they're both safe
because whoever they have fielding, they can't get it done right.
Then probably Won Soto's batting third, he walks because that's
(01:53:49):
what he does when you throw pitches that are anywhere
close to the plate, and then he shuffles towards you.
You get scared, you get intimidated. So the bases are
loaded for Freddy Freeman, the ragining World Series MVP and
Rand Slammer, I mean, seriously, he's not and then ers
and then you.
Speaker 2 (01:54:06):
Go back to the dugout to face Shohey for a
second consecutive hitless inning. Aaron, he's pitching that night.
Speaker 4 (01:54:12):
Aaron deseron Boom pull him.
Speaker 2 (01:54:14):
Aaron, Boone's fired already.
Speaker 4 (01:54:15):
What else do we have?
Speaker 6 (01:54:17):
All Right, good news for you, Ac, You have a
chance to make a second half push in fantasy football.
Christian McCaffrey returning to practice for the San Francisco forty
nine ers, on track to play this week against Tampa Bay.
Speaker 2 (01:54:28):
Now, my goal for the rest of the season is
to lap you for saying that craft.
Speaker 4 (01:54:31):
First of all, the door is now open.
Speaker 3 (01:54:33):
We don't normally talk a lot of fantasy football, even
though all three of us are in the same league together.
Every once in a while, with our scheduling matrix, we
face one another.
Speaker 4 (01:54:41):
Uh huh, So the what's your team again? It doesn't matter,
I want to hear it.
Speaker 2 (01:54:45):
We only have so much more time with this the
bad Ombres. Maybe it's my team, like we either have
on the eve of the most important election in the
history of this country, and my team name is the
bad Ombres.
Speaker 3 (01:54:56):
Like, are you at all thinking about the retirement of
that voice in two or three days or the fact
you'll get to use it for four more years? The
second one the second one. Okay, vote for Come on, now,
tell us what I'm telling us.
Speaker 2 (01:55:12):
Come on, you know who to vote for. Believe me,
that's selection interference right there.
Speaker 3 (01:55:17):
Okay, so you're the bad ombrace Yeah, and I throw
a hat tip to the Texans backup quarterback.
Speaker 4 (01:55:24):
I'm the Mills High Club.
Speaker 3 (01:55:26):
You were lamenting our matchup this week as your roster
full reed the text.
Speaker 2 (01:55:32):
If you're gonna do this, you're rossed, full of the text.
Speaker 4 (01:55:35):
I don't have any players, I don't like.
Speaker 2 (01:55:37):
Guys are hurt. This is so annoying. I have to
do and you have to do the back and forth.
I don't even remember. I probably don't remember how much
I whined yesterday.
Speaker 1 (01:55:46):
I can't.
Speaker 2 (01:55:46):
Okay, he started with a screen cap of our game. Yeah,
I don't know.
Speaker 4 (01:55:52):
Enjoy mine now?
Speaker 2 (01:55:53):
Four starters out today due to injury or suspension.
Speaker 4 (01:55:55):
Good bleep.
Speaker 3 (01:55:57):
I am enjoying it. Not as much as your two
tight ends starting lineup, but close.
Speaker 6 (01:56:02):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:56:02):
You know why I'm starting two tight ends because your
third tight end was on your bench.
Speaker 7 (01:56:06):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:56:06):
Well, I couldn't drop him. That's the only reason he
was still there.
Speaker 3 (01:56:08):
Great Thursday, I knew that it happened Jets and Conklent
on t Why that's why you said you can't wait
to pay an additional fee for the low score? DA
DA no players to pick up. By the way, you're
now favored to win based on tonight's.
Speaker 2 (01:56:22):
Favored to win. There's stupid formula. Yeah, because if it
were Pat Mahomes from like five years ago, he'd score
thirty tonight. But it's Pat Mahomes from twenty twenty four,
so he's gonna score eighteen points. I'm gonna lose by five.
I hate life.
Speaker 4 (01:56:37):
It's just fantasy.
Speaker 1 (01:56:40):
The eighteen on Sports Talk seven ninety Adam Clinton sounds
like this, Adam Clinton.
Speaker 6 (01:56:47):
Here.
Speaker 5 (01:56:48):
Adam Wexler sounds like this.
Speaker 2 (01:56:50):
Hey, it's Adam Wexler.
Speaker 5 (01:56:51):
Which one is missing in Adam's apple? They don't. The
eighteen continues on Sports.
Speaker 3 (01:56:59):

Speaker 3 (01:57:34):
Nicks and Rockets both teams with three wins over the
first handful of games of the season.
Speaker 4 (01:57:38):
Nicks are three and two, Rockets are three and three.
Speaker 3 (01:57:40):
But also as promised I said, we have tickets to
give away and we like tok up those that have
been listening to the show in case you missed it
is where you would have heard this, meaning if you've
been listening to the show very recently, you probably will
know the answer to this question and it'll be at
your choice. We got a pair of tickets to two
different events for today and throughout the rest of the week.
(01:58:01):
One event Cindy Lauper Live Girls Just Want to Have
Fun Farewell Tour. It's over at Toyta Center on November sixteenth.
Tickets are on sale now at livenation dot com. Or
got a pair of tickets to another event over at
Toyota Center. It's a week before that, this Saturday, November ninth.
Got a pair of tickets to the Mattress Firm Battleground
two K twenty four college basketball doubleheader featuring the Houston
(01:58:24):
Cougars against the aubur Tigers and then Rysals against Florida State.
Those tickets can be found if you don't win them
here at Toyota Center dot com. If you were listening
to our last segment, we opened up the what you
might have missed with a run through of a flurry
of roster moves made by the Houston Astros.
Speaker 2 (01:58:44):
One of those players was described by Dan as a
World Series Hero.
Speaker 3 (01:58:49):
I had an extended conversation about what exactly is a
World Series hero for the Houston Astros. What player were
we initially talking about there? What player did he mention?
It also had a roster move made regarding him today
and the Astros, and was mentioned as a World Series Hero.
If you know who that player is, you probably do,
maybe even if you didn't hear the conversation. Seven one
(01:59:12):
three two one two five seven ninety seven one three
two one two five seven ninety And you can choose
if you were first or take if you were second.
The tickets available for you to either Sydney Lauper or
the Hoops featuring both you of h and Rice Again.
The college basketball season is underway as of today, and
(01:59:32):
good things are definitely on the horizon for the Cougars.
Preseason top five will not surprise me at all if
they punched their tickets to the Final four again despite
one injury that took place at practice within the week.
Speaker 4 (01:59:46):
But uh, they are good.
Speaker 3 (01:59:48):
They have depth, and they have experienced nearly the entire
team from a season ago back with them. And if
you missed the Rockets over the weekend, we did not
even get into this. Saturday night, the Golden State Warriors
tipped off the Rockets three game homestand they got the
Knicks tonight, and the Golden State Warriors are playing with
(02:00:09):
a pretty different looking team considering Klay Thompson's not there.
Steph Curry was there, but not in uniform as he
was unavailable due to injuries, probably set to return, but
wasn't gonna play, and they knew that, And yet somehow
the Rockets allowed the Warriors to nail just about every
three pointer they took early in the game, built a
monster first quarter lead, built a thirty one point lead
(02:00:30):
in the game, only to have Tarry East and Amen
Thompson and a host of others in the third and
then fourth quarter get them into a furious comeback, and
they took the lead and had the lead in regulation,
needed a five point flurry at the end of regulation,
a three pointer from Jabari Smith Junior, and then a
(02:00:51):
steal turned into a bucket had the Rockets in overtime.
I was referring to my texts with ac over the
weekend last segment. I also had an exchange about a
lot of what was going in in the Rockets going
on during the Rockets game that night, and one of
them I thought was pretty pertinent to the final result
(02:01:14):
of the game. In overtime, Team A twelve field goal attempts,
no turnovers. Team B five field goal attempts, three turnovers,
guests who won. Yeah, the Rockets were one of twelve
in overtime. They didn't turn the ball over at all.
Every possession they had it. They were able to take
(02:01:34):
a shot, if not multiple shots, but they missed eleven
of those twelve. The Warriors scored eight points on five
shots and won the game despite turning the ball over
three times in overtime, and the Rockets unfortunately fell back
to five hundred. Felt really good about finishing the road
trip the way they did. Felt really good about the comeback,
but you came up out on the short end of it.
(02:01:56):
Very bad shooting nights for both of the players in
the rockets arding back court. I don't think we'll see
the same tonight. Have seen far too many of those
from Fred van Vliet over the course of the season.
He's really struggled shooting the ball. Alburn Shongoon has really
struggled shooting the ball, which is extremely atypical for a
big He's not taking different shots, and he's certainly not
further away on these shots. They just simply are not
(02:02:18):
going in as often as they have during the first
three seasons of his career.
Speaker 4 (02:02:22):
That will change, he said as much today.
Speaker 3 (02:02:23):
I didn't think he would lose confidence, and he hasn't,
but obviously need to go in if they're going to
push past hovering around five hundred, which is where they
finished last year, and push past at least one team
in the standings or at least one of the top
ten teams. They could be different this year, but the
Rockets finished eleventh, which meant they were one of the
five teams in the conference that did not participate in
(02:02:45):
the play in Game tournament.
Speaker 4 (02:02:47):
Or obviously in the playoffs at all. So unfortunately that
was them a year ago. Hopefully this time it will
not be the case today. By the way, the World
Series Hero, since we do a poor.
Speaker 3 (02:02:58):
Job of giving the answers to the questions we ask,
there is an Astros player now former Astros player who
has made five World Series appearances and throw fourteen point
two innings in those five appearances and allowed only two runs.
That's Jose Rachidi, World Series Hero, part of the team
(02:03:19):
in twenty twenty two, twenty one, and nineteen that participated
in the World Series. He was outrighted off the forty
man roster today, sent through waivers which he cleared and
becomes a free agent. Doesn't mean there's not a scenario
where this is the team he remains with or technically
(02:03:39):
comes back to. But he also isn't healthy enough to
pitch anytime soon. He might not pitch at all this
upcoming years. We watched a bunch of other pitchers on
their staff intending to come back in July or August
or September, and it just simply didn't happen at all.
Hopefully the case with both Lance McCullers Junior and Luis
Garcia two such pitch, they'll have something to provide the
(02:04:02):
Astros this upcoming season. Another couple of years remaining on
Lance mccullor's long term deal this year and the next,
Luis Garcia will be working on another one year deal.
In all indications, at least since we are aware of
his health situation, he should be ready to go for
spring training, and if all goes well there and he
continues to ramp up the way you would normally want
somebody to do, he's going to probably be a part
(02:04:23):
of their starting rotation, barring some other outside editions or
a return of yuse Kakuchi, or maybe even a return
of Justin Verland or on a much more team friendly,
short term, lower money deal. But there are opportunities, certainly
for Louis Garcia to help this team tremendously this upcoming season.
Normal work week for the Texans, so they'll be back
(02:04:45):
on the practice field on Wednesday. We'll still have a
couple of roster moves likely to make, and we still
need to discern the status of both Nico Collins and
Jarrett Patterson. I'd be nice to have both of them
available to them when the seven and one Detroit Lyons
visit a NRG stadium again. It's the second week of
three straight primetime games, level of competition at its finest.
(02:05:08):
In this one, they have the not likely playoff bound
Jets this past Thursday Night did not win, and they
have the not likely playoff bound Dallas Cowboys a week
from next Monday on Monday Night Football in Arlington. This Sunday,
they have the probable number one seed in the NFC
Detroit Lions.
Speaker 2 (02:05:28):
We'll be back with you tomorrow at three. As mentioned,
we got Rockets Basketball coming for you this evening right
here on your home for Rockets basketball.
