Speaker 1 (00:04):
Final hour of the show this week here on Ticket
seven sixty, the show being the Andy Everett Show, of
course without Andy today as he travels to Charlotte. I
am Sam Freeze again filling in for Andy, sitting in
the big chair along with Shane Carter here running the
control ship making sure everything is a smooth sailing as
(00:26):
opposed to Wednesday. We are back in our normal seats,
our normal computers. Notes are in front of us. It's
if you missed Wednesday show live. Unfortunately there's no podcast
from it, but I hope you enjoyed the chaos of
what you heard today. One hour down and we're quite
(00:47):
a bit of a smoother operation.
Speaker 2 (00:49):
So far, so good, and knockout would now like that.
Speaker 3 (00:52):
So it feels like we've had someone an audio issue
of some kind all week.
Speaker 1 (00:55):
So I'm about to potentially run our good vibes and
do some testing here live on the air. How does
this sound? I'm sorry, Duel, You're just the easiest way
to test it. Nothing right, I hear anything? Okay? How
about this very quiet?
Speaker 2 (01:12):
I heard?
Speaker 4 (01:13):
I heard that foot four two a little louder?
Speaker 2 (01:15):
Yeah, foam foot.
Speaker 1 (01:16):
Four twenty Okay, I think I have some level of
volume control. Because we are doing the Cave to close out.
I wonder what foam foot four twenty is up to
these days. That was one of our one of Duel's
biggest listeners back in the day when he was doing
the morning show over here.
Speaker 4 (01:32):
Chris.
Speaker 1 (01:33):
Dule drops out of context are still possibly my favorite
thing I've done here at the station. But we're gonna
do the Cave to close out the show. And if
you're unfamiliar with that segment, it's where we lay out
the schedule everything we have as an opportunity to be
entertained this week across the city. This weekend, I should say,
(01:54):
basically a bunch of concerts, bunch of events, whatever we
have going on.
Speaker 4 (01:58):
But it is if you remember the.
Speaker 1 (02:00):
Segment, it is a audio, a hyper audio involved segment,
and I wanted to make sure we had the capabilities
now before we get to the final segment today. And
I've got nothing left on the run sheet. What I
do have on the run sheet now, though, Shane, I
can't believe you told me you had never heard.
Speaker 5 (02:23):
This driving down sixty six, this old pick a truck can.
Speaker 4 (02:38):
It's old number eight.
Speaker 1 (02:42):
Good old Troy Aikman from his the nineties Cowboys country album.
Speaker 2 (02:46):
I mean definitely fits the song. It sounds like he
has a bit of a grappling voice.
Speaker 4 (02:52):
It just sounds like he's a proper Oklahoma Yeah, a
lot of that, A lot of that, a lot of that.
Speaker 1 (03:00):
Yeah, that sounded very George Strady. I think that's absolutely
what they were riffing on. It was right at the
peak of the ninety success of the Cowboys. I think
Jay Novichk is on a song on that album as well.
It was it was a full team effort album. Yeah,
we had we've played that before on these airwaves, certainly
(03:22):
have I.
Speaker 2 (03:23):
Uh and it's a dancer, that whole team headside project.
Speaker 1 (03:26):
Oh my god, I forgot about the dancing. Look, clearly
what is happening right here. This Cowboys season is as
close to being I'll tell you this on the run sheet.
Spurs are ahead of the Cowboys now and it's week eleven.
Speaker 2 (03:41):
Are feel good?
Speaker 1 (03:42):
Yeah, and the Cowboys what's the opposite of feel good?
Speaker 2 (03:45):
Because wait waiting for the end?
Speaker 4 (03:48):
Yeah? The good thing.
Speaker 1 (03:49):
As I said, we've Cowboys are only playing one Sunday
game in the month of November. It's next week against
the Eagles. So at least all we get to enjoy
NFL games all Sunday without the dread of a Cowboys
result hanging over our head. All of that to say,
(04:10):
I'm not trying to I'm not trying to get false
hopes raised. I'm not trying to convince you that you
should care about the outcome of these games for the
rest of the year. But I will say, the closer
we get to Monday, and the further we get away
from the tragedy that overtook the team last week, the
(04:33):
thought of the new Cowboy additions actually playing, suiting up
and hitting the field with the star on their helmet,
I'm getting a little excited.
Speaker 4 (04:44):
I'm getting I'm getting more and more excited by the day.
Speaker 1 (04:47):
And that is in a season like this where obviously,
you know, the record dictates it's the playoff chances, playoff
probability is slim. Uh So let's find something to get
excited about. Well, can I can I convince you to
get excited about the fact that, for the first time
this year they actually have a Mike linebacker on the roster.
Speaker 4 (05:09):
Well, that's kind of exciting.
Speaker 3 (05:11):
That and of itself, like having someone not play out
a position at a position that we, I guess have
undervalued over the last few years.
Speaker 2 (05:17):
We really took Layton van Rush for granted by the.
Speaker 1 (05:20):
Way big time and the injury. If it hadn't been
for the injuries, Layton would hold a much higher review
in the minds of Cowboys fans, definitely.
Speaker 3 (05:29):
Because when he was on the field, he was one
of your most effective players, especially against the run. We
really took that for granted as well, because he was
really good at sniffing out where the run was gonna
be an attack at and with guys like Kenneth Murray
or Shamar James or even Jack Samborne who actually supposed
to be this team's primary Mike linebacker, no one really
(05:49):
seems to have those sort of instincts of like of
knowing where the gap.
Speaker 2 (05:53):
Is supposed to open up, where where the ball is going.
Speaker 3 (05:56):
If nothing else, Logan Wilson has that pedigree to his
name of being that historically. Now, obviously this past year,
the Bengals defense overall has been the only defense that's
been marginally against marginally worse than the Cowboys defense, which
is saying a lot, but putting him in a position
that you really need him to play honestly is better
than what you've had up to this point.
Speaker 1 (06:16):
Yeah, and he is the only linebacker now that is
not on a rookie deal like Demarvi and Overshown, who
also will be back Monday night. Exciting or you're excited yet,
I am Shamar James on his rookie deal still. Logan
Wilson has two more years after this year, so if
the Cowboys do like what they see over the course
of the rest of this year, he's a part of
(06:38):
your linebacker group. Kenneth Murray and Sanborn are both one
year deals. They can be gone as fast as we
can fly him out at Dallas at the end of
this year. It doesn't look like either one of them
is a part of the future plan, but something to
get excited about. You're seeing Overshown coming back. He's most
certainly a part of the future plan. You're continuing to
see Shamar James come on come along as his rookie year.
(07:03):
As you're getting closer to the end of his rookie
year than the beginning, you're starting to see some growth
there certainly a part of the long term plan. And
I mentioned the money committed to Logan Wilson now they
can get out from under that money, but there is
a financial commitment to him that is not there with
Kenneth Murray or Jack Sandborn. So you're going to see
(07:25):
potentially what this linebacking unit will look like, not just
for the rest of this year, but also next year,
dependent on any other editions in the draft. Obviously, the
biggest addition I think outside of getting to see Demarvin
overshown back he will be on a snap count with
the catastrophic injury that he had last year, not going
(07:47):
to rushing back wise. Choice, the biggest addition and the
biggest level of excitement is that's correct. Yeah, it's been
big since he was at Alabama. Quenton Williams going back
to his number from his Alabama days wearing number ninety
two come Monday night for the Cowboys. His addition to
the defensive line group, specifically the interior defensive line group,
(08:11):
that is something to be excited about, not just how
it determines wins and losses the rest of this season.
He's here for three more years. He's here until his
age thirty season, and we've seen the impact that I
mean even just seeing the impact Kenny Clark had this
guy is Kenny Clark times twelve in terms of what
(08:34):
he can add to this defensive unit. And then the
question becomes, well, exactly how do you roll these guys
out there together? When you already have Kenny Clark, who
you obviously got back in the Micah trade. You have
some level of investment there, Osa, you just gave the
extension to this past offseason, and now you've got Quinn Williams,
(08:54):
who is the best of those three by far.
Speaker 4 (08:57):
Yea, how what's that snap count to be? On average?
Speaker 1 (09:01):
A defense plays about sixty sixty five snaps a game.
How many times are we going to see the three
of those on the field together? How many times what
pairing is getting used? Because Quinny Williams is going should
get the most amount of snaps, what pairing is going
to get rolled out there alongside him the majority of
(09:21):
the time?
Speaker 4 (09:22):
And mentioning the three of them together.
Speaker 1 (09:26):
We saw last week the Cowboy or two weeks ago
before the bye, the Cowboys use more five man fronts
than they had any game all season. And now you've
added a guy that actually can benefit you even more
than the five man fronts you were thrown out two
weeks ago.
Speaker 4 (09:45):
That's exciting to me to see if we're getting the.
Speaker 1 (09:47):
Three of them on the field together a third of
the time, I think that is a great is that
has the potential to improve this defense greatly. Just based
on personnel alone.
Speaker 3 (09:58):
We already talked about how the addition of Logan Williams
having him at the mike linebacker one gives you someone
who truly plays the mic up the middle immediately helps
your defense just having someone properly play that position. But two,
it also gives guys like Kenneth Murray, Shamar James, even
Marius Leafal who I think is like when he's out there,
he makes splash plays. Yeah, he's a splash play guy
(10:19):
right now. But the thing is, you put them more
on the outside, you put them more in space. The
Marvin over shown you mentioned, he's probably gonna get maybe
ten fifteen snaps or here or there. He has to
work his way back. Same as Revel. What you like
about this front seven is not only is it deep,
but at the but finally, I think I think you've
established the edges with the Ezraku and Clowney right now
(10:41):
are your.
Speaker 2 (10:42):
Best defensive ends.
Speaker 3 (10:43):
I think what it's done is not only built the depth,
but it's put the players in the right spot they
need to be in where they need to succeed Brad
than Force and someone to play outside their comfort zone.
Speaker 1 (10:53):
Yeah, there's been a lot of square peg round holes
to this defense through the first ten weeks.
Speaker 4 (10:58):
This is having the proper personnel.
Speaker 1 (11:01):
Now again, I go back to it, it's not a
defense of Eberflus because he has been stubborn with the
changes that took longer than they should have. Once he
realized your scheme that you developed all of training camp,
when you thought you were going to have one of
the game's best pass rushers, an absolute game wrecker, was
going to be the cornerstone of your defensive philosophy, he
(11:25):
should have made changes sooner, absolutely, But I also don't
put as much blame on him when he went through
all of the offseason, all of training camp thinking that
Micah was going to be a big part of this,
and now they're trying to figure out a lot of
things on the fly, which involved people playing in positions
that they shouldn't have been in to begin with. Were
(11:46):
starting to at least see some level of normalcy potentially
developing within his scheme where as you say, for the
first time, they actually have a mic linebacker. They actually
you have guys lined up knowing what role they are
playing and have comfort, familiarity and experience playing that role.
(12:09):
Another name you mentioned the Chavon Revel debut as well.
Speaker 4 (12:13):
Monday night.
Speaker 1 (12:14):
Obviously, I saw they opened up Malie Cooker's twenty one
day practice window, but he won't be back. But the
safeties do appear to be getting closer to healthy. If
Revel can give them anything in the secondary, particularly as
we saw Bland get exposed on the outside against Marvin
(12:35):
Harrison Junior in that Cardinals game. Yeah, if they can
start sliding Bland back more inside into that nickel role
because Revel can take on more of the outside responsibilities.
Speaker 2 (12:46):
And Kaylen Carson looked good the other night too.
Speaker 1 (12:47):
And I think and Carson and that was in limited
snaps against the Cardinals as he was coming back from injury.
You're gonna see way more of Kayln Carson, which means
you'd see less of kayere Elam and other guys that
are on one year deals, like your linebacking group, like
your you know, guys that they were pulling off of
practice squads or off of their you know, couch.
Speaker 4 (13:08):
As they were unemployed.
Speaker 1 (13:09):
I think the combination of Carson and Revel could also
be a massive benefit, massive boost to this defense. It's
just a matter of Uh, it might not matter this year,
but to see some stage, some level of growth from
these guys and the defense as a unit, it's certainly
(13:29):
going to pay dividends going into next year. Let's stick
with some NFL talk because I got some got some stats,
some data on the Raiders, and then we'll take a
quick look around the rest of NFL Week eleven. Coming
up next here on The Andy Everett Show.
