Speaker 1 (00:03):
The news of the day is the retirement of head
coach Greg Popovich as head coach. He will stay in
the organization as a president of basketball operations. I kind
of think he kind of had that role to a
certain extent even when he was head coach. He probably
let general manager Brian Wright have more day to day

(00:24):
operation of that. As if you heard of the Antonio
Daniels interview earlier today, what he was on with Doug Gottlieb,
he said, Pop will still be involved in personnel decisions,
trade decisions, coaching decisions, those kind of things. We'll talk
about the Mitch Johnson hired a second, but I thought
we would talk a little bit about Pop today in
this segment we'll play. We'll probably do this. There'll be

(00:45):
a lot of Pop coverage today on the show, but
some of your favorite moments in pop history also, will
we ever see anybody else do it? For twenty nine
years and we'll get to I know a lot of
you have always the last maybe eight or nine years,
have had issues with Pop in terms of his politics,

(01:06):
his social stances on things, and his willingness to share
those things in public on the forum that is the NBA.

Speaker 2 (01:12):
I don't care. If you want to say those things,
that's great.

Speaker 1 (01:15):
There are consequences that come with them and you'll have
to deal with them. But everybody has a right to
an opinion, and everybody has a right to say that
opinion wherever they feel like it is, and again there's
sometimes consequences of it. I probably have not had a
conversation or even HI, how are you in probably eight
or nine years with Pop because I don't have an

(01:37):
opportunity to cover the team on a regular basis like
I used to. Well, even probably longer than that in
the years, mainly because of the the UTSA stuff. Played
golf with Pop, Well, I've never played golf with Pop,
but we played in this We did. We actually did
play in the same golf contest one day. Okay, there

(01:57):
was a deal at the Valero Texts Open and the
fall I want to say, oh four or five somewhere
out in there where on the last day of the
tournament where the tournament was over, they had a shot
for your for celebrities.

Speaker 2 (02:12):
It was a celebrity group of people.

Speaker 1 (02:15):
You take a shot from thinking it was one sixty
five one seventy yards at at Blocina on the eighteenth
hole and closest to the pen won something for your
favorite charity or something like that.

Speaker 2 (02:24):
I don't even know.

Speaker 1 (02:25):
All I know is I Snapp hooked it the end
of the grandstand. I have no idea where Pop hit it,
but I do remember Pop saying you can do better
than that, and I went, yeah.

Speaker 2 (02:34):
I could if I hadn't been sitting in a.

Speaker 1 (02:35):
Media tent for the last four days with no worm
up and no stretch and no nothing and so. But
I do remember that conversation. I think I covered a
Spurs game a few years ago after the game was
over and he saw me, He goes, haven't seen you
in a while?

Speaker 2 (02:50):
I know it. Yeah, me, neither you too.

Speaker 1 (02:52):
But and I here's here's the one thing that or
one of the things. There's many things, but here's one
thing for sure that I will always feel is something
that people didn't have an opportunity to see because not
everybody participated. And from nineteen well, when he came here
in ninety five, a ninety four to ninety five season,

(03:14):
we did a general manager show on a monthly basis
with Pop, and we did a weekly radio show with
Bob Hill for several years, and then when Pop became
the coach, the general manager show went away and we
just molded into one. It was held at several different restaurants,
the old Tony Romas back in the day. It was
I think Mama's restaurant had it for a while and

(03:37):
I don't even know. I think there's still one Mama's remaining.
It may be the one we did it from. There's
a steakhouse called You Are Cooks that no longer exist
that we did it from for many years. And he
would The one thing he did not like to do
was arrive early, because especially if it was around playoff time,
or if it was around if it was around a

(03:59):
big game, he would walk in at six fifty nine
or at five pin fifty nine, whenever the show was
about to begin, and he may have sit in his
car and pretend that he was on the phone. But
because other media would come out to videotape the show,
he didn't want to do a second media session, which
we all everybody told everybody the media session was this afternoon.
He's not going to say anything else at seven o'clock

(04:22):
to you the media that he's conucked that he hadn't
already said at eleven thirty, but he would come in,
he would do the show. And I know the last
four or five years we were at the four ten
and evers and where you are coach used to be.
And after every show, because we would do Pop from
six fifteen to seven, it was about.

Speaker 2 (04:43):
Forty five minute show.

Speaker 1 (04:44):
We had a weird clock at the time, so the
show started like a six', ten it went to, seven
and then we did another forty five minutes of just
sports talk and so And Jay howard did the show
With pop and then did his own talk show after.
That so we were on the air from like six
ten to seven point fifty with some some weird clock
that we, had and So pop would do the first

(05:07):
forty five minutes Every monday night or the closest to
The monday night when if there was a travel day
or a game on that. Day and so we're doing the,
show and during the, Breaks pop would get up from
the table and walk around to every table in the
room and introduce himself to whoever was. There, hey you

(05:27):
have any questions that you don't want to talk about
on the. Air you got anything you want to ask,
Me i'll answer the. Question and he enjoyed getting the
questions from the fans way more than he did from mini,
media ESPECIALLY tv and newspaper and out of town media And.

Speaker 2 (05:46):
Craig sager at the end of quarter. Media he enjoyed.

Speaker 1 (05:49):
Interacting with the, fans and SO i always, Thought and
then there was one time we were doing the show
during the. Playoffs spurs had an off day that they
were doing the, show and so there was other playoff
games going, on AND i believe The lakers were playing
whoever they were. Playing there was going to be the
next series that The spurs were going to, play and

(06:10):
they were tipping off at seven. Thirty and at the,
TIME i don't know if he still lives in The
dominion or, not but at the time he.

Speaker 2 (06:16):
Did and so he.

Speaker 1 (06:20):
Stood up after The usually after every show he would
walk around the restaurant again and go through that same same.

Speaker 2 (06:27):
Thing and so during the first break he stood up
and the.

Speaker 1 (06:31):
Microphone could you could use the speakers in the, Room he, said,
guys as soon as this show's, Over i'm in the
car and getting. Home i've got to be in front
of THE tv at seven thirty because that's when The
lakers and whoever starts AND i got to watch the.
Game so if you have, anything make sure you get
it to me. Today i'm not sliding you. ALL i
normally stay after for a few minutes and talk to you,
all BUT i can't, Today and just to have the

(06:51):
courtesy to do THAT i thought was amazing with Probably
and that show was forty weeks a year during the
during the basketball, season so in the first two or
three weeks of the season and around the, playoffs the
restaurant was, packed and in the middle of the, season
you'd have your fifteen to twenty five.

Speaker 2 (07:08):
Regulars it would show up every.

Speaker 1 (07:09):
Week but it was those fifteen to twenty five regulars
that he REALLY i, thought got not necessarily to, know
but appreciated the most because they were always there every
week for that radio. Show and it's still kind of
amazing to me that it's been twenty four years since
he's done a radio, show but he used to do
one every.

Speaker 3 (07:28):
Week, Now, man you would sit there and, say, Wait
pop used to do. That he enjoyed it back in the.

Speaker 2 (07:34):
Day Well i'm not sure how much he enjoyed, it
but he did.

Speaker 3 (07:37):
It you, know as time goes, on you, know after a,
while you're, like, oh why AM i still.

Speaker 1 (07:42):
Doing but the way that we sold it to, him
the way we presented it to, him and a lot
of that Was jay was, hey you get an opportunity
to address the fans with your. Message it's words from
your mouth directly to your fans in front of your
fans who were there and the diehard, fans and a
lot of them couldn't afford to go to. TICKETS i
remember there was a couple there that never went to a,

(08:03):
game but they never missed one ON. Tv they were,
retired they were on solid, Security they had no money
when it came to spending money for. Tickets if they
won tickets and they got to set in the upper,
deck they would. Go but for the most part they
were and they didn't like to travel in the. Evenings
but they never missed a game and they never missed
a radio. Show and it was those people THAT i

(08:23):
think he kind of admired and liked and, felt, HEY
i am giving my information to. You SO i think
all of those things were really good to see. That
so the players that never played for him loved. Him
the players that did play for, him for the most,
part liked him and loved HIM i know he And
Steven jackson had some issues for a, while BUT i

(08:43):
think that's under the bridge by now here's the last
thing on this.

Speaker 2 (08:47):
Segment we'll get to more of this. Later but he
liked to be, challenged and he liked to challenge.

Speaker 1 (08:53):
You and if you had an issue and you back
and he you, know if you if he had an,
idea AND i think he would do this with. Players
there was a. SITUATION i KNOW i had this with.
Him if you believed in something that you were, right
and you defended, yourself he respected you a lot more
than if you just, said, okay whatever you, say because

(09:15):
sometimes he would probably JUST i think he was probably test.
Players Sometimes i'm going to say something AND i wonder
if he's going to fight back on. It and the
fact that he, would he would allow you to disagree with,
HIM i think is what collaboratively made the.

Speaker 2 (09:28):
Team so good over those.

Speaker 1 (09:29):
Years BECAUSE i like this draft, pick, well, COACH i, Don't,
well why not sell me on why you. Don't and
if you could sell him on why you didn't like,
him then he may not draft. Him he may still draft,
him but at least you had your two cents and
he didn't hold that against. You he didn't have a
grudge with, You SO i think he was a great.

Speaker 2 (09:47):
Person at least he was to.

Speaker 1 (09:49):
ME i know there's other people that probably have had
different situations with him in the. Past but now he
gets an opportunity to be in the front office and
make some personal decisions for as long as he wants.
To And i'm sure there'll be a collaborative effort with
everybody else in basketball.

Speaker 2 (10:03):
Ops.

Speaker 3 (10:03):
Yeah, Yeah so at the end of the, day the
main thing is we just Want pop to be, healthy you,
know to be healthy and. Happy and if and if
this is going to make him less worried about his
own health and less, Stress i'm all for.

Speaker 2 (10:19):
It.

Speaker 1 (10:20):
YEAH i think there's gonna be some stress because he's
gonna miss the fact that he's on the sidelines. Anymore
you don't do that for that long and not miss
it when you.

Speaker 2 (10:27):
Don't do it.

Speaker 3 (10:28):
Anymore, oh the batphone will be, There but don't get me,
wrong the batphone's the little button's gonna be.

Speaker 1 (10:32):
There the play, well that's the thing we're going to discuss.
NEXT i hope the bat phone is not, there And
i'll explain WHAT i mean by that coming.

Speaker 2 (10:38):
Up, next it's THE andi average show on the. Ticket
