Speaker 1 (00:04):
Aaron Judge was the MVP in the American League last week.
Was announced Thursday, right after we finished the show, and
since I was not here on Friday, I didn't get
a chance to talk about it. Sam and I did
talk about it a little bit last week. His war number,
which is wins above replacement, it's like nine point eight
or something like that exactly, and Raleigh's was seven point
(00:25):
something was probably the stat that took over.
Speaker 2 (00:28):
He had another magnificent year.
Speaker 1 (00:31):
And there's nothing wrong with Aaron Judge making MVP, except
for the fact that cal Raley broke a record that
nobody ever thought was going to get broken with Mickey
Mantle switch hitting record. Most players don't even try to
switch hit these days. There's very few of them left.
There's maybe one or two at most on a team,
when in the past there was at least double that,
and also did it as a catcher. But congrats to
(00:56):
Aaron Judge. And if I'd had a vote, I would
have probably voted for Raleigh.
Speaker 2 (01:01):
And I'm a Judge apologist.
Speaker 3 (01:03):
Anyway, I'm gonna tell you right here, right now, exactly
why cal Rally should have won and didn't win. Andy.
The reality is just Just last year, the MLB said,
we are going to recognize a historic season when we
see one shoe Hail Tani who went from being a
pitcher and a DH focused solely on hitting, and he
set the fifty to fifty. Remember he had the fifty
home runs and fifty stlen basins had never been done before.
(01:25):
They said, even though he's only a one way player,
we're going to honor in an historic season. They gave
it to him primarily because he's a Dodger. Now with
cal Raley, who does the exact same thing, takes on
Mickey Manals record, says, a home run record for catchers,
and a team record and the almost broken AL record
at the trajectory he was going. The reality is that
he plays for the Mariners, and whether we like it
(01:46):
or not, marketability does matter in some of these aspects.
I agree Aaron Judge is not just the best outfielder
in baseball. He might be the best overall player in
baseball regardless, at least in the AL. I would argue
show he is the best overall player. But cal Raley
again had another historic season which put the Mariners from
third in the East. Remember, like in July, there were
(02:08):
seven games behind the Astros. They overtook it as the
playoff pushed what was happening. And now we're gonna not
goet acknowledge the historic season. Now it's going to make
it almost irrelevant it happened.
Speaker 1 (02:17):
Look at a lot of the other Seattle Mariners players
in the past. Edgar Martinez was never given the credit
that he deserved. Ken Griffy had to leave. I I
don't think so each Rose other than Pete Rose. Each
Rose probably the best hitter of all.
Speaker 2 (02:34):
Time and definitely the best leadoffy Well, Ricky Anderson probably
the best leading I would be.
Speaker 3 (02:40):
I've never saw him, but I did see each Yet
eachro never won an MVP. Yeah he won, he went
overseas MVPs. He never won an MVP in in in America.
Speaker 1 (02:48):
Well, I I think to A to A in ninety
nine percent of the years, number ninety nine would have
won the m v P. This year, I thought cal
Rawley deserved it a little bit more. I agree, And
I think when you're able, he caught. I want to
say rout. Rawley played in one hundred and fifty nine
of one hundred and sixty two games. Now, I didn't
go back and dive into how many games they catch
and how many games was he just a DH. My
(03:10):
guess is he probably DH twenty games, maybe twenty five,
But he still caught one hundred and thirty seven games,
which is a lot more than most catchers do. Because
the backup catchers probably playing at least is probably catching
at least two thirds of this or third of the season.
Speaker 2 (03:25):
You got to give those guys a rest.
Speaker 1 (03:27):
They can't play every day with the tolls that are
there for a catcher.
Speaker 2 (03:32):
But I understand why there's.
Speaker 1 (03:35):
More people with ballots that probably watched more of Aaron
Judge than watched of Cal Raley. And a lot of
times we just pay attention to numbers and take nothing
away from both years. They both played great. But here
we go. I think it's well, it should be an
interesting race again.
Speaker 3 (03:51):
There we're also ignoring the concept of the MVP because
we're ignoring the early season struggles of the Yankees and
of Aaron Judge himself. And even though they eventually got
to the playoffs same same as the Mariners, I would
argue that Cal's success resonates more with the Mariners than
did with Aaron Judge. That maybe I'm biased. Maybe I
really did want him to win it that bad, but
I do believe that the Yankees could still win without
(04:12):
Aaron Judge as opposed to the Mariners win without cal Raley.
Speaker 1 (04:15):
All Right, coming up the six o'clock hour more NFL stuff.
We'll talk about Jamar Chase spinning on Jalen Ramsey, Cowboys
and Raiders.
Speaker 2 (04:22):
Tonight it's the Andy Everage Show on the table
