Speaker 1 (00:00):
Let's get into our discussion with the Spurs last night,
and they were on the short end of a loss
to Golden State. Didn't the numbers didn't look too bad
a five point loss. I'm gonna let Sam give his
ideas or his thoughts on the game, because he saw
more of it than the highlights that I saw. But
when I look at the box score, I see that

(00:21):
Steph Curry scored forty six and Wimby scored thirty one.

Speaker 2 (00:23):
So they went mono a mono.

Speaker 1 (00:25):
But you got to get You got to get to
a point or where Curry doesn't score forty six. If
he scores thirty, that's fine, but forty six is too much.
He went to the free throw line way too many times.
The Warriors went to the free throw line way more
than the Spurs did. I think it was thirty six
to twenty in that discrepancy. It's not the worst I've
ever seen. I called a Saint Mary's basketball game one time.

(00:49):
They played up in Shriner and Schriiner shot fifty six
free throws and Saint Mary's shot seven. Yeah, that's pretty bad,
and Saint Mary's lost the game at the Buzzers seventy
one to seventy.

Speaker 3 (01:00):
That makes it even worse. Was it was it? Actually?
I mean it was.

Speaker 2 (01:04):
It was terribly efficient, That's what it was.

Speaker 1 (01:06):
Like, We're going to make this game as close as
we can because we.

Speaker 2 (01:09):
Won a close game, and I think.

Speaker 1 (01:13):
I think, I think Saint Mary's had a possession to
win the game and miss the shot.

Speaker 2 (01:17):
And then Buddy Meyer was the coach.

Speaker 1 (01:20):
And when I had him on the postgame, the interview goes,
I said, you want to come in on fifty six
free throws to seven? He goes, It'll just get me
in trouble. Let's go on a smart man.

Speaker 4 (01:30):
Someone needs to check those officials web browser history.

Speaker 1 (01:34):
Well that was before the web. That was nineteen ninety
when that happened.

Speaker 2 (01:37):
So we did.

Speaker 1 (01:38):
We didn't have electronic betting. But I will never forget
that box score check because I don't keep a I
don't keep a score. Basically, when I'm calling a game,
I don't want to look down. I'm looking at the floor.
Now in today's world, we have a staff monitor, so
I can glance at that from time to time and
see what I need to see. Or when I we're
at home, I usually have either Walder stoops or Richard

(02:01):
Wiggins feeding me stats in my ear, but when I'm
on the road, I don't.

Speaker 2 (02:05):
But I didn't. I was just waiting for the box score.

Speaker 1 (02:08):
To come at the time outs, and when we got
to the end of the box score, I was like, well,
I knew they shot a lot of free throws, but
forty nine more than the other team did.

Speaker 2 (02:17):
That's a little bit. But anyway, we.

Speaker 1 (02:19):
Go back to what I've said a few weeks ago.
The key for the Spurs to be improved. And they're
gonna play Oklahoma City here in a little while, and
they're gonna play Houston again, probably in Houston. And the
Lakers are playing better than I thought they would so
as Golden State, for that matter, they'll probably when they
played the Clevelands and I think Philadelphia, depending on what
lineup they put on the on the floor, and the Knicks,

(02:41):
when they play the teams that are as good or
better than they are Denver in Minnesota, in that group too,
if they're on ball defense, does it get better? Those
are the games they're gonna struggle with. I think they're
gonna beat a lot of five seeds through twelve seeds
or even out of the playoff Seeds. I think they're
gonna beat a lot of those teams whether they play
a good defense or not, especially with Wimby on the floor.

(03:03):
But the discrepancy is quite poor, from one hundred points
a game to one hundred and twenty two points a game,
depending on when Wimby's on the floor or not on
the floor. That's got to improve, and that's usually just
I don't think it's an effort situation with the Spurs now,
if you go back and look at them in the
early two thousands, Pop always said that a great defense

(03:23):
is an attitude. You have to want to do it,
and if you want to do it, you'll do it well.
I think the rules have changed to where sometimes the
officials let you play with a little bit of physicality,
and way too often they don't. And especially with a
point guard like Steph that's going to zigzag all over
the floor, it's hard to keep him and you keep
yourself in front of him to where he can't get

(03:44):
past you and draw those little silly contact bump fouls
and then live at the free throw line, where he's
one of the best rethrow shooters that's ever played. So
they've got to figure out a way to play better
on ball defense and especially play better over all defense
and finish defense with rebounds when Wimby's on the bench.

Speaker 3 (04:01):
Yeah, there were some.

Speaker 4 (04:02):
There was some sequences last night where not only Wimby
getting stuck guarding stuff, but also Cornett getting isolated by
their guards in switch on the pick and roll that
Golden State was putting the Spurs through. And that's where
you know, when you're getting that kind of defensive mismatch,

(04:22):
it's usually always going to end in a good look
or a foul. And that's exactly what Golden State you did.
Mention though, the just looking at the box scorer or
looking at the stats, there was despite the loss, it
was a historic game for the Spurs as an organization.
And if you look at the box score, you can

(04:42):
instantly probably guess it was the first time in Spurs
history that two guys got a triple double in the
same game.

Speaker 2 (04:50):
Wow.

Speaker 3 (04:51):
Yeah, of course, Wimby being one of them.

Speaker 4 (04:54):
His thirty one, fifteen rebounds, ten assists, I'll throw eight
turnovers to go with it, and then Castle twenty three
ten and ten only two.

Speaker 1 (05:04):
Times I think before his career is over, Wimby's gonna
be the next quadruple double player, and he could be
a Quinn tuple double.

Speaker 3 (05:12):
It wouldn't.

Speaker 1 (05:12):
So yeah, I mean, he's gonna get the points, he's
gonna get the rebounds, and there's gonna be a game
where he.

Speaker 2 (05:16):
Has ten blocks, ten steels, and ten assists.

Speaker 4 (05:19):
So that was another good thing coming out of last night.
Wemby extended his consecutive game streak with a block and
the one last night. If you didn't see it, try
to find the highlight it.

Speaker 3 (05:32):
It was insane. Draymond was shooting a three pointer.

Speaker 4 (05:34):
Wemby's standing in the middle of the paint, takes one
step towards Draymond and jumps and is able to deflect
Draymond's three point shot, not like close to Draymond's hands,
as the ball had already left his hand. And then
the broadcast actually put some measurements to show just how
much space Wimby had covered when he deflected the ball

(05:58):
and got credited for the ball. His hand touching the
ball was eleven feet two inches in the air.

Speaker 2 (06:06):
Just insane.

Speaker 1 (06:07):
I'm sure Draymond was like, I can't do anything about that.

Speaker 4 (06:09):
Yeah, well, I mean there's nothing, there's nothing he could
have done to prevent that, because when you're when you
could even see it as he was setting up for
the shot, you know, Wimby was closer to the rim
than he was to Draymond, and all it took was
one long stride and a jump and he ends up
getting credited for the block.

Speaker 1 (06:26):
So if the Spurs can shore up the defense a
little bit and be more consistent there, I think they're
gonna be fine. I still think this is a top
six team in the in the West that we won't
know till we get to March, April and May and
where they're at there. But they're They're a fun basketball
team to watch, and sometimes losing teams are fun to watch.
I didn't think the Spurs were that fun, especially with

(06:47):
all the injuries they had last year. They got to
stay healthy. But they're going to lose a few home games.
But if they can win thirty two thirty three home
games and win twenty more on the road, that would
be a pretty good season and get them at least
in a situation where they have a chance for our
first round playoff win. All right, let's talk Utsa and
Charlotte coming up, and we'll get into the NFL's best

(07:08):
matchups and a little bit as well. And I've got
a question for Sam that we're going to get to
about basketball and especially the dreaded NBA Cup.

Speaker 2 (07:17):
We'll get to that coming up. It's the Indy average
show on the ticket

Ruthie's Table 4

Ruthie's Table 4

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.
