Speaker 1 (00:04):
Getting ready for the US Open tomorrow. We'll have our
US Open picks coming up. I've got some thoughts because
I've got to try to combat the obvious choice, and
that being Scotti Scheffler, who everybody seems to think will
win another Major. And as Branda Chamblee was quoted the
other day, what's the winning score going to be? Whatever
Scotty Scheffler shoots. College basketball could be up against some

(00:27):
changes here soon. We'll talk about those coming up in
the next segment. And the Kevin Durant situation is getting
interesting amongst a lot of teams because Durant to the
Spurs seems to be what the boys in the Desert
feel is the best opportunity, and I agree with them.

Speaker 2 (00:44):
For Phoenix, that's the best choice for Phoenix.

Speaker 1 (00:47):
But whether or not the Spurs are willing to extend
Kevin Durant beyond the current season would be to be
determined all right, Game three to night of the NBA Finals.
And it's kind of interesting. It's kind of got lost
in the shuffle of everything else, and mainly because it's
two teams that not a lot of people find to

(01:08):
be sexy or sizzly or whatever you want to look
at and I'm kind of interested to see how Oklahoma
City comes out here in Game three, because I think
the thunder are gonna come out strong like they normally do.
I think Indiana's gonna make a run and Oklahoma City
is gonna wear you down in the third and fourth
quarter and win by ten or twelve going away. I

(01:29):
do not expect Indiana to win tonight. There's some talk
that Halliburton is is a little bit banged up with
a leg injury. But I am looking forward to seeing
what Oklahoma City can do and if they can seize
the opportunity, I think there's an opportunity for a gentleman's
sweep from them. If they can't, then if Oklahoma City

(01:49):
is gonna win this, it's gonna take a lot more
games than I think they were planning on.

Speaker 3 (01:52):
I think it's more along the lines of because the
games are just it's too.

Speaker 2 (01:56):
Long a break in.

Speaker 1 (01:57):
Yeah, I agree, I agree, And I know that somebody
was saying, I don't remember what player it was, that
they wish that the Conference finals would have two days
apart between games. There's enough delay, Let's there shouldn't have
only been one Indiana to Oklahoma City's an hour and
a half flight. Yeah, maybe on a bad weather day,

(02:19):
and you're flying commercials, so you're going to get I mean,
you're flying charter, so you're going to get the clearance
that you need to get to where you need to
go as long as there's no weather in the area.
So I think that it would have been fine to
play Tuesday and Thursday. But there's something about the TV
deal that ABC believes that Sundays and Wednesdays are the

(02:40):
days that they want to play most of the games.
So I think it's Sunday, Wednesday infra and or Wednesday Friday.
Sunday is when they want to play today, or is
it Saturday.

Speaker 3 (02:48):
It's Wednesday, Friday, Monday because Monday would be the would
be Game five, which just so that makes zero sense
to me because why would the NBA not want to
play on a weekend.

Speaker 2 (02:59):
I don't know.

Speaker 3 (03:00):
I'm trying to think of the maybe Stanley, Well.

Speaker 1 (03:04):
It's not gonna fit factor into either one of those buildings.
I mean, I guess it. Could you have to plan
for that ahead of time? Well, it could be because
so they're playing Monday, Wednesdays and Sundays.

Speaker 3 (03:14):
So it was Game one was Thursday, this past Thursday.
Then Game two was Sunday, which to me, that's an
extra day that doesn't need to be right. It should
have been Sat. Saturday, game two or game three today.
So there's three days in between, which is ridiculous, too much,
too much. Game four is Wednesday. That's fine.

Speaker 1 (03:33):
You know, a game game today is game Today's today's Wednesday, Wednesday.

Speaker 2 (03:38):
Game four would be Friday.

Speaker 1 (03:40):
This is game three tonight, right, Yes, Game three is
tonight Wednesday.

Speaker 2 (03:44):
Game four would be Friday, which which is fine. Yeah,
but they're going to give you two travel days, yeah,
Saturday and Sunday.

Speaker 1 (03:52):
Well, now here's here's one of the the here's what
will change next year because next year NBC gets the
contract and NBC will play the Sunday game after the
US Open. They'll run one right into the other because
US Open Sunday will finish about seven o'clock Eastern time,
and if there's and they now have a two hole playoffs,

(04:13):
so it's probably not going to finish past eight o'clock
Eastern time. And so going into the future, I guarantee
you next year the NBC will have a Sunday night
game that ends after the US Open finish or starts
after the US Open finishes. That's what they used to
do when they had the contract in the past.

Speaker 3 (04:31):
I think one reason as well that they might be
staggering it like this. I really want to say that
it's probably because of the Stanley Cup.

Speaker 1 (04:40):
Playoffs, in case it was in an arenas where they
couldn't otherwise play.

Speaker 2 (04:44):
Well.

Speaker 3 (04:44):
Well, no, because if I'm not mistaken, Mickey has the final,
they have the Stanley Cup. Yeah, so on on Saturdays
and Sundays. I believe they moved. They put those on
on ESPN on ABC. Oh they I'd have to look,
but I want to say that that might be a reason.

Speaker 2 (05:04):
I don't want to give up my weekend though.

Speaker 1 (05:06):
If I'm a if I am a league, I want
to play as many weekends as I possibly can, because
that's when more eyeballs are going to be on me.
Kids can stay up later if it's a late game
on a Saturday night. They if it's a Sunday, well,
now school's out, but typically you can't. You're you're going
to get a bigger audience if you play earlier in
the day on a weekend than you would otherwise.

Speaker 3 (05:26):
All Right, well, I was completely talking out my roarin.
The Stanley Cup Finals is on TNT, So everything that
I just said three minutes, well, I knew that.

Speaker 1 (05:34):
I knew that I knew the semifinals were on tn
T I did. I did not know the finals were
not on a network somewhere else. Here's here's the thing
though about this game. Shay, Alexander Jay gilig Is, Alexander
uh and Tyrese Haliburton obviously the guys that you got
to pay the most attention to for either team. But
I'm looking for somebody else in Oklahoma City's offense to

(05:57):
not necessarily take the scoring burden away from him Becau
because he's going to get his thirty one way or
the other. That's just what's going to happen. But when
when Indiana makes its runs, and Indiana goes on a run,
whether it's to extend a lead or to come back
from a deficit, is how Oklahoma City handles that For
the most part all season along in the regular season,

(06:18):
they did not let teams close the gap, and they
did not let teams run away from them, and they
led the NBA in double digit wins. And so my
guess is is that that's part of what they're hoping
that they can do in this game against Indiana. Having
the game in in Indianapolis is a huge thing for
the Pacers. At the beginning of the game, you expect

(06:40):
them to come out with their hair on fire. If
Oklahoma City can weather that storm, I think the Thunder
win this game.

Speaker 2 (06:45):
Yeah, we'll see what happens. You know.

Speaker 3 (06:48):
Obviously, like you mentioned, Shay is going to get his
it's who's going to be the guy that helps Shay out.
For the most part, at least in the regular season
and even in these playoffs, it's been Jalen Williams, the
j dub from Santa Clara, Jalen Williams.

Speaker 2 (07:03):
He's he's averaging.

Speaker 3 (07:04):
About twenty points and the third leading scorer is chet
At only I say, only you know fifteen point eight.
I just they if Oklahoma City, here's the difference between
Oklahoma City and the Pacers. For me, if Shake Gildish
Alexander has a bad night, I don't know if they

(07:25):
can recover from that.

Speaker 2 (07:26):
I don't think he's gonna have a bad night unless
he gets hurt.

Speaker 3 (07:28):
Because for me, chet has I disappointed, I underachieved.

Speaker 1 (07:34):
I'm not gonna say just twenty he's under Yeah, I
don't know. I think you asked me a month ago
or two weeks ago. If Oklahoma City doesn't win it,
do you move off home. We're going to go get Giannis,
and you could potentially do that to put Giannis and
Shay together.

Speaker 2 (07:49):
I think Homeran's got a role on this.

Speaker 1 (07:50):
Team, and he's got a He has to live up
to what his stats are and what they've been in
the regular season. They're a better basketball team this year
with chet than they were likeast year when he was
sending out with the injury.

Speaker 2 (08:01):
Yeah, all right, let me switch gears a.

Speaker 1 (08:03):
Second, because I just saw something on the line about
Kevin Durant and Shams is reporting that the five teams
out there that are most interested in Kevin Durant is Rockets, Spurs, Timberwolves.

Speaker 2 (08:16):
New York Knicks, and Oklahoma City. I'm surprised that Lakers
are in there as well. Well.

Speaker 1 (08:21):
I'm sure the Lakers are interested, but I think they're
in the same boat as those other teams are. If
I am the Phoenix Suns, I am not entertaining any
trade for Kevin Durant that doesn't come with at least
three picks, and I would say three first round picks. Now,
maybe some of those picks are protected, maybe they're not,
but I want picks. I want three first round picks,

(08:43):
plus whatever money it takes, because and you and I
were talking about the Rockets, you could trade fred van
Fleet and one other spare player that makes ten million
dollars and equal the money if you're Houston and now
you get Kevin Durant to pair with all the other
play on that team, and the Rockets would need to
find themselves either a free agent point guard, a trade

(09:06):
for a point guard, or draft a point guard. Whereas
uh and and they have they have some draft capital,
so do the Spurs, and so does Oklahoma City. I'm
not sure what Minnesota's draft capital is, but I know
the next gave away five picks to get Michael Bridges.
So to me, the Knicks don't make a lot of
sense because I'm not if I'm the Suns, I'm not
just taking Karl Anthony Towns. Uh oh, do we have

(09:31):
a red alert?

Speaker 2 (09:32):
We have a red alert? Shame? Oh no, sorry, I'm
trying to download that from.

Speaker 1 (09:34):
When we Yeah, I was scared me there first.

Speaker 3 (09:39):
Scared me but real quick, when you're talking about the
t Wolves, they don't have draft capital because remember that
they traded like forty million picks to go get Patient
zero from Utah.

Speaker 1 (09:51):
Yeah, so if you're not if you don't have draft picks,
and I'm the Phoenix the front office, there's no conversation
to be had because I don't care, I don't want,
I don't want just good. I mean, the Suns are
not better if it's Karl Anthony Towns for Kevin Durant.
You're getting a weaker version of Kevin Durant with Karl
Anthony Towns, so that trade doesn't make any sense. I'm
throwing New York out of the picture now. Kevin Durant

(10:13):
may want to play there, but it's going to take
multiple teams to get him there in order for that
to happen. I still think his best chance of success
is Houston under San Antonio. And the rumors are that
Kevin Durant wants a two year extension at one hundred
and twenty million. I'm going to try to talk him
down to a two year extension at a hundred million,

(10:34):
or maybe one at sixty and one at forty and
the forty is a team option, or if he hits
certain numbers in his second season in San Antonio, then
he gets the third year whatever that is. I don't
have an issue keeping him around for a couple of
more years. We're playing with other people's money when we

(10:54):
talk about these trades anyway. But the Spurs will figure
out a way to get Deer and Fox and and
to get Kevin Durant if that's in the cards. And
about the time that Kevin Durant is ready to leave,
now comes Wimby's deal, and now comes a few years
after that Staffhen Castle's deal. So there's there's the pieces
of the puzzle can work out fine. Uh, but if

(11:15):
you get a chance to get Kevin Durant and and
I did this scenario yesterday with the starting lineup, and
let's say that Devin Vessel, for the sake of the argument,
is part of the pieces that has.

Speaker 2 (11:25):
To leave, it ain't so.

Speaker 1 (11:27):
But but you have and and you decide you're gonna
draft deal in Harper. Your your four guys in the
backcourt that are going to share the one in two
minutes are Fox and and Castle and and Harper.

Speaker 2 (11:39):
Uh and and who am I missing here? Well? Wemby's.
Wemby's not not a backcourt player.

Speaker 1 (11:45):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (11:45):
The four in the backcourt would be Castle.

Speaker 1 (11:48):
Uh and and and uh and and Daron Fox would start,
and then you'd have Harper coming off the bench as
a potential draft pick if if you choose to go
that way. Uh And whoever you want is the other
as the other guard. But your starting lineup could be
Durant and Wimby together. And I don't know that you
make this trade unless you're deep down in your mind think, Okay,

(12:11):
we can beat Oklahoma City with a combination of Durant, Wimby,
Fox and Castle. Those four guys are going to be
the catalyst to us. You know, those four guys are
ninety points a game, maybe one hundred points a game
between those four guys. Kevin Durantz always wanted to be
a score. Kevin Durant's been a either at the top

(12:33):
or near the top of the league, scoring many times
in his career. And so I'm is this a championship team?
If you go after Kevin Durant, can you go from
thirty four wins to fifty five plus by adding Kevin Durant?
And if you can, then I don't care what those
last two years are. You take the opportunity for the
championship because you're not eating you're not guaranteed the next

(12:55):
year that you're going to get one, especially with the
competitiveness of the West.

Speaker 3 (12:59):
Well, here's the thing that history would say that the
Spurs more than likely would not do something like this
is because they don't They don't go They don't pull
that Hey, we're gonna go all in on one particular season.
We've played the waiting game for so long for the
past few years, and you know, the quota trust, the
process that the seventy six ers failed to do, that

(13:22):
we are succeeding in doing. I just I don't see
them giving up on the young guys like Devin Vessel
or some of the.

Speaker 2 (13:32):
Sea And I don't think that I agree with you
on that.

Speaker 1 (13:35):
I don't think the Spurs have to make a move
because as long as Winby is content with maybe steps
along the way to become a perennial championship team, if
the word perennial championship team even exists anymore in the West,
because there's no guarantee that Oklahoma City is gonna win
sixty eight games next year with other teams also getting better.

(13:55):
That's why I say you've got to take advantage of
it while it's hot. I think Indiana can get back
to the finals next year with the competition in the
in the East, New York's gonna be down, Boston's gonna
be down. Cleveland had a miraculous year. We don't know
what the Sixers are going to do. The Bucks may
be without Giannis and Giannis maybe in a Western Conference
city Miami may be better or worse. I think Indiana

(14:15):
right now could be considered one of the favorites to
win the East next year. So they're gonna get back
there and have that chance. Oklahoma City is guaranteed nothing,
because there's other teams in the West that can be
as good as they are with the with the right
roster most.

Speaker 3 (14:29):
Well, and you can look at how the Boston Celtics
kind of put together their roster. It's they they went
all in, Hey, we're going to shell out all this
money for all of these high profile players and then
add some of these extra players and then also pay them.
But we're seeing what's happening. They had basically this year
and last year, and they're having to blow up the team.

(14:50):
They're gonna have to blow they're gonna pay five hundred
million dollars.

Speaker 1 (14:55):
And if and if, and the Spurs are in a
scenario where the Deer en Fox's contract is this year,
Wimby is probably two or three years away at the most.

Speaker 2 (15:02):
Twenty six seven would be the last year.

Speaker 1 (15:04):
Yeah, so he's got two more seasons before his his
rookie year expires, and you've got a maxim out, and
then you've got Castle following after that, and then if
you draft Harper, you've got five years before that. So
I'm fine with them doing nothing as long as they
continue to go from let's say, you know, twenty game

(15:25):
twenty two, last year thirty four, Let's go to forty
eight and then and maybe you're you go two rounds
deep in the in the playoffs, maybe you get to
the conference finals.

Speaker 2 (15:35):
Maybe you don't.

Speaker 1 (15:36):
But if they can add a shooter and a center,
I still think they can be as good a team
in the West because they played together a lot. And
look at the way that the Pacers and the Thunder
got to the finals. It was baby steps along the way.
They didn't just rush out and try to go after
the biggest free agents.

Speaker 3 (15:52):
Yeah, the only players that are not guaranteed on the
roster coming into this season would be one Chris Paul.

Speaker 2 (15:58):
Because he's going to going to one of the LA ten.

Speaker 3 (16:01):
Contract ran out. Sandro is not on the roster because
his contract ran out. Jordan McLaughlin who was part of
the Dearn Fox trade, his contract will be out. Bismck Biambo,
his contract will be out. Those are the only players
that are not going to right now that would not.

Speaker 1 (16:19):
Be and you can resign those guys easily at the
in August after all the other major pieces are put
in place if you want those players.

Speaker 2 (16:27):
To be part of your roster.

Speaker 1 (16:28):
Yeah, all right, we got us hoping picks at the
bottom of the hour. But we've got college basketball potentially
changing some of its rules, and I think every single
one of them are great. We'll tell you what the
plan is. Next is the Andie Everage show on the
ticket
