Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is awesome B ninety three Awesome Sauce brought to
you by Modernistic six ten weekday mornings with the B
ninety three Morning Show. I feel like this is just
a good reminder for this time a year. This is
a college senior who took a very painful fall and

(00:20):
the stranger who picked him up really changed everything. This
was seven years ago. University of Texas senior Joey Romano
was skateboarding near campus and he swerved to avoid a car.
He crashed into a ditch and he broke his wrist.
He was in pain, he was scared. He was unsure
what to do, so he made a decision that unknowingly,
would alter his life forever. Instead of calling an ambulance,

(00:43):
he called an uber. Really, it's a lot cheaper. It
is much cheaper. Yeah. So the driver, Benny, arrived and
Joey was still laying on the ground. Benny carefully helped
him into the car and he lowered the seat so
we didn't have to move too much, and he drove
him to urgent care. When say the injury was too
severe and that he needed to go to the er,

(01:06):
Benny didn't just drop him off and say Okay, good luck.
Make sure you tip me, he said, I'm gonna stay
with you, which is nice in and of itself. Benny
sat with Joey in the emergency room from two pm
until eight pm. He didn't get paid for that. He
was in no rush, no hesitation, just kindness. And what

(01:27):
he didn't know was that Joey did not have family nearby.
But Benny knew what it felt like to be alone.
He had immigrated from the Congo at twenty five, and
he understood what it was like to feel a little
bit isolated. Joey said that he has this warm presence.
It felt like we had known each other forever. What
Benny didn't know was that Joey was really struggling with grief.

(01:50):
He was still coping with the loss of his little
brother from a few years earlier, and that day, the
simple act of compassion flipped a switch. Said that one
act of kindness helped me see good in the world again.
Benny absolutely changed my life. Seven years later, they are
still friends. Oh that's so amazing. Joey now works in

(02:13):
renewable energy and Benny, who was driving uber, is now
an insurance agent and a gospel singer. Geeze, and they
still chicken on each other a few times a year,
especially around the holidays. Benny sums it up perfectly. He said,
the world is so divided right now, but what we
really need is love and a little bit of kindness.

(02:35):
And I just feel like that is kind of what
we all need to hear right now, isn't it. Yeah,
I think so. One small act of kindness might be
someone else's turning points. So if you get the opportunity,
be the reason that somebody believes in good today, and
that is how you start your day on a positive note.

Ruthie's Table 4

Ruthie's Table 4

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.
