The officers were responding to a report of a suspect
with a weapon and shots fired. They say as officers
approached someone open fire. Nicole Waldner is Assistant police chief.

The officers were both struck and not able to return fire.
Our first officer is a twenty nine year old and
he's currently at the hospital with non life threatening injuries.
The second officer, a thirty two year old, is at
the hospital and he remains in critical condition.

On that note, last year, three hundred and forty two
officers shot in the line of duty. That was a
substantial increase over the prior year. We lost one hundred
and sixty five heroes during the course of the year
last year. That was up seventeen percent from the prior year.

This year's been much better, but still thirty four heroes

that have laid down their lives in service of their communities,
including in California. This week's Sergeant Joe Dang, who was
struck and killed by a driver of a vehicle while
he was processing a fatal accident. Saying Shall has served
with the Los Angeles PD for twenty six years. As
we honor those who've lost their lives, important to remember

the families as well. The average age of the fallen
forty years old, eleven years of service. There are eighteen
widows and forty six children who've lost a parent. And
so this is weekly reminded to the back to badge
