Speaker 1 (00:18):
Historic week from the MPs on Iran's nuclear facilities to
the NATO summit and a big week in the Supreme Court.
Speaker 2 (00:27):
Big day today in the Supreme Court too.
Speaker 1 (00:28):
Somebody covers all of these things and was at the
NATO summit with the President. Our White House correspondent John
Decker walk us through it.
Speaker 2 (00:37):
It's been something else, well.
Speaker 3 (00:39):
It has been. I was at the NATO summon, as
you point out, Brian, I was at the press conference.
I got called on at the president's press conference in
the Netherlands, asked him about essentially the motives of Vladimir Putin,
and he made some news in terms of the answer
that he gave me. He said, potentially of Vladimir Putin
(01:00):
has territorial ambitions beyond Ukraine, and that made some big
news when he said that. He also said that Vladimir Putin,
the leader of Russia, is misguided. But as for this
week as a whole, it starts out over the weekend
with that attack. Those strikes on three nuclear sites in Iran,
(01:21):
and according to the President, according to the White House,
according to the Department of Defense, it obliterated Iran's nuclear program.
Speaker 1 (01:28):
And it seems as though that's been substantiated to varying
degrees by Israeli intelligence and now also the UN that
said massive damage has been done there.
Speaker 2 (01:37):
So it looks like a lot of progress here.
Speaker 3 (01:40):
Oh, I would say, so, you know, I think that
you can even if you have any doubts, there is
no doubt that today as things stand, Iran does not
pose a security risk to Israel or any other country
in the region as it relates to its nuclear program.
So that's a good deal.
Speaker 1 (01:57):
And John, I'm curious about some of the contextual elements.
So you know, obviously, when you get together in the
Netherlands and you have the backdrop with all the NATO countries,
it's not exactly, you know, a mega rally ready to happen.
So what was the atmosphere like, what was the reception
(02:19):
like for President Trump relative to the Iranian situation? The
progress being made, obviously, the five percent defense spending goal
that was met by every NATO country except for Spain.
Speaker 3 (02:31):
Yeah, to me, that's a big victory. You know, the
President came home to Washington, d C. I arrived back yesterday,
He arrived back the night before, and he arrived back
with a big victory at Big w Because of that.
He's been pushing for that, Brian, as you know, for
ten years, to get every NATO country to step up
to in his words, pay their fair share, to increase
(02:53):
their defense spending. And that's exactly what he achieved. It's
you know, and he got credit for it from Secretary
General Mark Ruda as well.
Speaker 2 (03:04):
I can't help help but to think of the Daddy situation.
That was an all times SAT situation, right.
Speaker 1 (03:10):
Rubio, he got Rubio one on that one.
Speaker 2 (03:15):
He did, he did all right. So also I wanted
to ask you about the Supreme Court.
Speaker 1 (03:20):
Today is a huge day, the final day of this
particular session. Any expectations for the rulings today, Well.
Speaker 3 (03:28):
There's only one case in which I set in for
oral arguments. That was the case involving peripherally birthright citizenship
and whether or not it's permissible for a single district
court judge, a single federal court judge to issue a
ruling that covers essentially the whole country and may put
(03:52):
the president's executive orders on temporary hold. That is the
issue that really the Supreme Court may rule lawn today
and I think will role on today. I don't think
that they're going to get into the issue of birthright
citizenship itself. They first have to confront this procedural issue,
and then potentially down the road, they will confront whether
(04:12):
or not it was permissible, it was legal, it was
constitutional for the President to sign that executive order which
essentially does away with birthright citizenship.
Speaker 1 (04:23):
And that's a good update when you take a look
at the ruling the way it could come down on
nationwide injunctions.
Speaker 2 (04:31):
Is this as open ended as they wanted to be?
Speaker 1 (04:34):
In other words, could they apply this situation that is
about immigration to any matter and say, look, just a
judge at the district warl level does not have the
ability to issue a nationwide injunction for anything, or would
it be particularly limited to this issue.
Speaker 3 (04:53):
Yeah, that's a big question, and that was part of
the oral arguments, the questions being asked by the nine
Supreme Court justices. It's to me that is the most
interesting opinion that will be delivered today is the way
that this opinion is put forward, splitting the difference potentially
(05:14):
and in order to get a majority to get along
with it. I think that it was pretty clear from
oral arguments, just even based upon some comments made by
Justice Alito, it was without a doubt, you know, I
think the most conservative justice on the Supreme Court right now,
he had some issues about the issue itself of birthright citizenship.
(05:35):
He did not want to go there, but he was
troubled by the idea of a lower court judge, a
lower court federal judge, essentially signing off on a nationwide
injunction having that power. And we'll see whether that's a
majority of view that's expressed when the Supreme Court comes
forward with that opinion, likely in the ten o'clock Eastern
(05:55):
time hour today.
Speaker 2 (05:56):
It's been a remarkable week.
Speaker 1 (05:58):
You've done a remarkable job covering and we'll continue to
pay attention.
Speaker 2 (06:01):
Thank you so much for taking the time, John.
Speaker 3 (06:04):
Thanks Brian, I appreciate it good to talk with you.
Thanks for having me on your show today. Have a
great weekend, and we'll talk to you next week for sure.
