Speaker 3 (00:20):
And we have all kinds of breaking news this morning,
including the President's Agenda passing the House of Representatives, the
One Big Beautiful Bill Act passing by one vote in
the House just.
Speaker 2 (00:33):
A bit of go.
Speaker 3 (00:34):
We also have some breaking news going on in Martin
County this morning. At eleven o'clock, our state's Attorney General
is going to be on hand recognizing some local heroes.
Of course, the second attempt of a Trump assassination last
year here in West Palm at Trump International that led
to a man hunt and eventually on ninety five in
(00:55):
Martin County, you had.
Speaker 2 (00:57):
Martin County Sheriff's deputy.
Speaker 3 (00:58):
He's at a checkpoint that I did the suspect, Ryan
ruth detained him where he is awaiting trial and joining
us to talk about this situation and honoring some local
heroes at the Martin County Sheriff's office. Our state's Attorney General,
James Uthmeyer, Thanks for taking the time with us.
Speaker 4 (01:17):
Of course, good morning, Thank you so much for having me.
Speaker 2 (01:20):
You bet so.
Speaker 3 (01:20):
Tell us about it and why you want to go
ahead and recognize these deputies.
Speaker 4 (01:25):
Sure, well, you know, we've got an annual tradition of
awarding law enforcement officers of the year. We had that
ceremony yesterday, and this year we decided we're going to
honor a team of the year and make this the
inaugural award. And the team that's going to get it
is the team of sheriff deputies that responded to this
assassination attempt. As everyone remembers just last fall, the assassination
(01:49):
attempt on the President while he was golfing was immediately
met by a chase, and the assassin attempt followed by
a drive chase through Palm Beach and ultimately Martin Counties.
And these deputy sheriffs, they responded admirably. They put themselves
in harm's way, ultimately detained the individual before anyone else
(02:11):
could get injured. And you know that deserves to be recognized.
These law enforcement officers. They always say, Hey, I was
just doing my job. I was following my training, my protocols.
But we know better. These guys are heroes and we
will honor them today as such.
Speaker 3 (02:24):
Yeah, from a law enforcement standpoint, so you know, and
at your perspective, you take a look at the level
of cooperation that took place from the moment this is reported,
and from the Palm Beach County Sheriff's office to Martin
County obviously the Feds involved, and everything else. The level
of coordination in such a dire situation seems like it
(02:46):
was really remarkable.
Speaker 4 (02:49):
That's right. It was. You had an off duty officer
in Palm Beach County who immediately recognized the description of
the vehicle that had been called in. He springs in
the action, follows the individual, and then these Martin County deputies,
you know, they respond in just a few minutes and
ultimately wrap this thing up quickly. They were heroes. They
(03:12):
definitely potentially saved lives, and you know, we're going to
recognize them today. And if only the federal government had
been as cooperative and coordinated at that time under the
Biden administration as these officers would, we would have been
able to bring charges faster. But unfortunately the Biden administration,
they would not give the state access to the scene.
They would not give us access to evidence, they wouldn't
(03:35):
allow us to bring the state charges. And once the
Trump administration got in there, Attorney General Bondi was great
to work with. We worked hand in hand and we
were ultimately able to bring first degree murder and terrorism
charges here in the state court.
Speaker 2 (03:48):
And what is the outlook on that case at this point.
Speaker 4 (03:52):
We're continuing to bring it. You know, more and more
evidence will will be released soon. Again, we are working
with the federal government now, so we're getting access to
things that we weren't allowed to touch for months upon months,
and that really is an obstruction on our republican form
of democracy. That is an attack on American citizens. That
a federal government would refuse to work with a state
(04:15):
on a prosecution. Prosecuting an assassination attempt should in no
way be political. I don't care what administration is in charge.
The federal government should be working with states to bring
every charge possible against very dangerous people terrorists. So it's
moving forward. We'll continue to prosecute it as quickly as
(04:36):
we can and hope to see you hope to see
this wrapped up in short order.
Speaker 3 (04:41):
Speaking with Florida's Attorney General, James Uthmeyer speaking of correcting
issues with the previous administration, obviously the open border policies,
the abuse of the asylum system, everything else. One of
the laws passed in a special session preceding the state's
regular session the two eighty seven requirement within the State
(05:01):
of Florida and ice initiative that is optional that the
State of Florida said, Hey, we're going to make this
mandatory for local law enforcement to opt into this program.
Florida has become the leader nationally in use of the
two eighty seven g program. Of course, you had a
federal judge and Obama appointed judge in Miami who has
(05:22):
attempted to stop this day. You're saying, not so fast,
and have been moving forward with us. Tell us a
little bit about this dynamic and the importance of two
eighty seven GEN where we stand sure well.
Speaker 4 (05:36):
Historically courts have often said that, you know, enforcing immigration
is really a central prerogative and states don't have a
role here, which is very frustrating as a state to
not be able to defend your borders, to not have sovereignty.
But immediately upon President from taking the oath, our state
leaders came back in special session, they passed this law.
(05:56):
It is the most robust law in the country to
oppose illegal immigration. And part of this law was to
give resources and authorities to local law enforcement so they
could step up and help the FED, help ICE, help
homeland security. And as a result of that, we were
the first state in the country to have all of
(06:17):
our state law enforcement and all of our sheriff's county
sheriff's office receiving the certification under this two to eighty
seven g federal program that gives them delegated authority to
help detain and deport illegals. So we have been working
fast on that. Florida is leading the way. The Trump
administration is using our plan, our manual we put together
(06:40):
as the blueprint for the rest of the country, and
we will continue to move forward in that way. This
judge in Miami, you know, she ordered me to tell
all law enforcement to stand down and not make a
arrest under our new law that was passed that says
you cannot come to Florida illegally. And here's the problem
with that. Not a single law enforcement agency is a
(07:02):
party to the case. And then the first day of
law school they tell you a judge does not have
authority over people that are not parties to the case.
So I am not willing to give up my oath.
I took an oath to defend the Constitution, and if
she wants to hold me in contempt like she's threatening that,
that's the price I'm willing to pay to uphold my
oath and enforce rule of law.
Speaker 3 (07:24):
You know, it's interesting, James, because it's taking a look
at that after she postured that way and I saw
your response, which is what you just told us, and
you know, in tot law enforcement to keep doing their job.
And I was waiting for her to make that move.
And it seems as though maybe you have called her
bluff here that she understands what you're talking about from
(07:46):
a legal standpoint, given that it's been what weeks a
month now and nothing's happened.
Speaker 4 (07:53):
Yeah, she's asked for some briefing, and you know, we've
laid out the arguments. I hope she's looking at in
our arguments and understand. You know, we are right on
the law. We feel very confident about that. If she
wants to disagree with us, then we will certainly take
our arguments up to the appeals court. But to hold
me in contempt for upholding my oath and following the law,
(08:16):
I do believe is extreme. And you know, I hope
she decides not to go that way. But at the
end of the day, you know, I'm a public servant
and I took an oath and I will follow it,
and if.
Speaker 3 (08:26):
It does go down that way, it'd be But the
latest ruling overturned upon appeal, I'm sure, and we've seen
that so many times with some of these Democrat appointed
judges in our state that have gone against Florida policies,
only to be overturned on appeal, often in the Federal
Appeals Court in Atlanta. I wanted to ask you as well,
and about a recent situation Palm Beach Gardens Gym Lifetime Fitness,
(08:52):
and I think this is interesting for a couple of reasons.
One just that you did end up responding to a
complaint from a woman who said, hey, there's a guy
who wandered into the women's area, into the sauna in
the bikini, and you know, it was like that, that's odd,
but one that had happened in violation of state law.
(09:13):
But two, also that you got involved in this tell
us a little bit about this situation.
Speaker 4 (09:19):
Yeah, well, I know you've got some states out there
that want to push this radical stuff, But in Florida,
we are going to protect women and girls and there
is no tolerance for men wanting to go into biological
men wanting to go into women's restrooms and locker rooms.
So when we heard about this complaint, you know, we
(09:40):
immediately engaged. We sent a demand letter to the gym
to correct their ways. We explained to them, to the
extent you think you have some legal obligation under local law,
you know you're incorrect, and if you don't adjust your
practices right away, we will take legal action. And thankfully
they did come a they agreed that they're no longer
(10:01):
going to do that. At the end of the day,
protecting the safety of women and girls is my job,
and we will not stand by if we are aware
of any anybody out there that's putting women in danger.
So you can count on me. I'm going to be
paying attention across the state all other gyms included keep
(10:22):
men out of women's restrooms. There's no room for it.
Speaker 3 (10:26):
And part of the reason I wanted to bring that
up with you is I'll hear from listeners sometimes that
are like, you know, why should I report something?
Speaker 2 (10:34):
It's like, you know the state's going to do something anyway.
Speaker 3 (10:37):
They just think that they're one person, small situation that
you know in the state of Florida, that's nobody's going
to act on that. Can you tell us how that
tip came to you and then also you know the
process to go through this. If people do run into
things that would be appropriate to report to your office.
Speaker 4 (10:55):
Absolutely, yeah. If you have a complaint with an injustice happening,
please let us know. I will act on it right away.
That's how we know what's going on in the state.
Go to our website, to Florida AG's office and shoot
a tip. We just opened an office of Parents' Rights
a couple of weeks ago because we heard about parents
that were not being informed or included in counseling and
(11:19):
so called medical treatments where school systems are trying to
advise and trans kids behind parents' backs. That breaks our
state law. If you're aware of any of these horrific situations,
get it to us and we will engage right away.
Last week we sent a letter to Hillsborough County. We
found out they still had pornography and the dangerous content
(11:39):
in their libraries. We sent them a letter threatening legal
action that got it out a day later. To other
counties have followed suit early this week. Let us know
we will engage. We're going to keep Florida the safest
state in the country.
Speaker 3 (11:51):
Appreciate you minding this door. What the Attorney General, James Uthmeyer,
thank you so much.
Speaker 4 (11:56):
Thank you
