(01:41):
maybe for a future a Q and I. Today's note
is this, Hey Brian, thanks for all the great information
you provide. Piggy backing off the story about Florida trending Republican,
do you give any validity to the accusation by Governor
de Santis that it seems some representatives got elected as
Republicans and are voting like Democrats. Did you ever consider

(02:02):
looking in their backgrounds?

Speaker 4 (02:03):
Or have you? Thanks again, all right, asking you shall
receive so.

Speaker 1 (02:08):
Today, Florida's legislature resumes budget negotiations as the Senate led
by President Ben Albritton and House led by Speaker Daniel Press.
They've been at odds over spinning levels and tax cuts
and Notably, you had the Senate President Al Britton that's
expressed support for Governor d. Santas's agenda and as a
preferred approach to spending and also the allocation of tax

(02:29):
cuts with pres pretty much the opposite way on most
of those things. As noted in today's intrigue, De Santas
has accused elected Republicans in the legislature without naming names,
of being Rhinos or Republicans, name only implying that some
members of the legislature ran as Republicans only to get

(02:49):
elected while having differently aligned views.

Speaker 4 (02:52):
So about that. In addressing today's.

Speaker 1 (02:54):
Question, I'm going to start with just the voter registration piece,
all right, just the quant fiable. In the Florida Legislature,
there are two elected members who have changed political parties.
And yes, both did flip from Democrat to a Republican
and it happened prior to this year's state legislative session. However,
neither have actually been elected as Republicans. House Representative Hillary

(03:18):
Cassell was elected as a Democrat in twenty twenty two
re elected as a Democrat last November. However, she switched
to the Republican party in December citing the Democrat parties
disconnect with Floridians and her support for Israel. Similarly, around
the same time, House Democrat Susan Valdez flipped, stating that

(03:39):
she was quote tired of being the party of protesting
and that she actually wanted to accomplish something for her community. So, look,
it is possible that these two former Democrats are effectively
Republicans in name only, perhaps flipping as a perceived way
of having more juice with the majority party, but with

(04:00):
not even a full session behind them, kind of hard
to evaluate voting records yet to see if there really
is but a significant change of heart. Regardless of Cassel
and Valdez, you don't really fit the bill for what
Decantis is publicly lamited, because I mean, in the grand
scheme of things, Republicans already had a super majority. They're
not in the Republican leadership steering this agendas. So I mean,
however they voted candidly really wouldn't matter all that much.

(04:24):
But what about others? Are there actually GOP members who
are really Democrats ran as Republicans. Well, if that happened,
you've had a long game that's been played to get there.

Speaker 4 (04:37):
Reps.

Speaker 1 (04:37):
Cassel and Valdez are literally the only two members of
the Florida Legislature in either party that have ever switched.

Speaker 4 (04:44):
Their voter registration status.

Speaker 1 (04:46):
Okay, so everybody else that's been elected, whatever they registered
as originally is what they are today. So there's that piece.
So then you get to the current issues in play,
spending in tax cuts. Okay, so Speaker Perez again without
naming names, this is squarely weird. DeSantis has pointed all

(05:07):
of his angst. All right, he would be like the
keen rhino in DeSantis's rhetorical whatever you want to call it,
that's been going on, monkey feces thing. Joel always gets
very uncomfortable with the monkey feces.

Speaker 3 (05:24):
No, it's just kind of gross, it is.

Speaker 4 (05:28):
Some people will say, what's been going on, it's kind
of gross.

Speaker 1 (05:30):
Well, yeah, so anyway, take a look at the issues themselves.
So Perez and a lot of the Republicans of the
House that have gone along with Prez's agenda are divided
over what.

Speaker 4 (05:45):
Again, it's spending levels.

Speaker 1 (05:47):
And tax cuts, but specifically Perez and company are proposing
a budget with four billion dollars in less spending and
tax cuts that he would have issued through a permanent
state sales tax cut, and you have the Senate DeSantis
approach that prioritizes the use of sales tax holidays, a

(06:08):
reduction of property taxes, and the potential for future elimination
of property taxes. So Speaker Perez wants to see overall
lower spending as opposed to sales tax holidays, wants to
permanently reduce the state's sales tax rate as a means
of lowering the tax burden. I think that's a pretty
good place to talk about the contextual elements here, kind

(06:31):
of I mean, whatever you think of Perez's position, his
proposals kind of hard to say that proposing less government
spending than DeSantis is calling for and a permanent cut
to the sales state sales tax is a rhino kind
of thing to do, right, I mean, whatever, your thoughts
are not exactly Republican in name only or left leaning positions.

(06:55):
I mean, when was the last time you had Democrats
calling for less government spending and Republicans and especially Republicans
are considered conservative like DeSantis, and then permanent across the
board tax cuts.

Speaker 4 (07:08):
I mean, you probably would have to go back to
JFK to find that.

Speaker 1 (07:12):
So I dream of the day that all Democrats call
for less government spending impermanent tax cuts. We've won at
that point. Now, personally, I agree with some of what
DeSantis and the SINA wants, and actually some of what
pres is calling for. Specifically, like if this were going
to be my option to cherry pick what happens, I

(07:32):
would go with Preses four billion dollar reduction in spending
it for proposed levels. I am totally on board with
the Presses plan to put an end to sales tax holidays.
I talked about that so many times over the years,
what a boondoggle they are. DeSantis's plan to reduce property taxes,
I believe is the far better plan for property or

(07:52):
for tax relief. And DeSantis's plan to pass a law
to conduct a study to consider a constitutional amendment two
potentially eliminate property taxes. That would be one of the
best things the state has ever done. So if all
the stars aligned in tallahas he, maybe, just maybe something
like that will be what comes out of.

Speaker 4 (08:10):
This that kind of compromise.

Speaker 1 (08:12):
But regardless, the facts don't support a rhino agenda obstructing
DeSantis' plan, but rather a difference in conservative opinions, and
as I've also said, I believe Perez likes being that guy.
I think he's very politically ambitious. He's thirty seven. He
likes getting his name out there. He likes being kind
of the anti DeSantis Republican in this state, it seems
