Speaker 2 (00:48):
This is Rob from Westcom. Yesterday or day before, we
had a guy arrested by Palm Beach Show's office. He
was in the international airport and they found him with
a bunch of rounds of AMMO and guns. They interviewed
a passenger coming out, and he said, I can't believe
I left the safety of New York City and wound

(01:09):
up in the madness of Florida. Could you address that
person's comments please, you know?

Speaker 3 (01:16):
And so I put this in the newscast, the local newscast.
I saw this guy speaking to our CBS twelve news partners,
and I just had to do a double take.

Speaker 1 (01:25):
I'm like, really, it was one of those moments where
it's eye opening. Go ahead and all right, share it
with us.

Speaker 4 (01:34):
It's very frightening. I'm very grateful with the law enforcement
here is diligent and was able to apprehend this person.
But it's scary. I'm leaving the safety of New York
City to come to the madness here in Florida, and
it's kind of scary.

Speaker 3 (01:49):
Madness people getting pushed into subways in the city.

Speaker 1 (01:53):
I do appreciate that he at least appreciated law enforcements,
and that's that. Yeah, But it's like, hold on, is
this ant state of reality?

Speaker 3 (02:01):
That's what I thought of the disconnect.

Speaker 1 (02:03):
And obviously this listener thinking that same way. So yeah,
when when that comment was made, it wasn't also in
us either. In Joels, he mentioned specifically highlighted that in
his coverage because of what appeared to be like this
delutional world the man was living in. But look, we
got to drive, as always, your two sides of his stories,

(02:24):
one side of fact. So is it a fact that
our preconceived notions that New York is is especially the
city less safe than Florida? All right, well let's get
into it. So what I've done. There are so many
different places you can go for varying different information, but
the one that is best, I think in general, actually

(02:47):
is crimegrade dot org. You can get right down to
your community and see what goes on in your community
from a crime perspective. But it also makes it really
nice and easy to compare between locations. And so I'm
using crimegrade dot org comparing first amnistore with the state.
The band did say New York City, and I'll do
the city too, but I want to start with, you know,

(03:09):
comparing Florida to New York State and all of the
varying different elements of crime grade. They factor in various
different projections based on the amount of crime reported for
one thousand residents. They use FBI crime data statistical analysis

(03:30):
that is done through AI as well for crimegrade dot org.
So let's start with comparing the crime between the two states.
And rather than going through a ton of numbers, because
it'll be a ton of numbers and way too many,
I'll give you a couple of numbers as we get
into it. But they do a grade as well, and
I thought that would be easier on the ears as

(03:51):
we start the comparatives in here between Florida and New York.
So this is state of Florida versus New York state.
On violent crime, Florida gets an A minus rating. How
does New York state fair? See? Property crime Florida gets

(04:11):
an A grade, New York B minus. Other crimes Florida
gets an A plus on but actually New York does too,
so that there's an area where New York looks solid.
Overall crime grade, Florida gets an A plus. This one

(04:31):
might surprise you. Bet New York state gets an A
minus overall. But to put a number to it, and
this kind of is the first thing to drive home
the larger point here. If you take a look at
the cost of crime per household, and this factors in
the cost of a being a victim of crime, but

(04:52):
also the cost to deal with it, so incarcerations and
you know, prisons, the cost of all that to run
things to the cost per household in the state of
Florida due to crime six hundred and forty seven dollars
this year. In New York State it is eight hundred
and ninety two dollars. So overall, New York has higher

(05:15):
violent crime rates, property crime rates, and overall crime rates
while posting similar other crime rates to Florida. And aside
from being more likely to be victimized by crime in
New York, the hard cost of crime for the average
household is also thirty eight percent higher annually as well,
So this looked pretty much less like a slam dunk.

(05:37):
And then if you want to compare Florida to New
York City, not imagining that it's going to get better
for New York City and compareson to the state as
a whole, are you yeah, yeah, and it doesn't and
it doesn't. So remember how New York is thirty eight
percent less safe than Florida. How about New York City?

(06:01):
Violent crime in New York City is twice as high
as this day wide average in Florida twice, property crime
one and a half times higher than the Florida average.
There's absolutely no comparison here. I mean, it is as

(06:22):
I'm curious, Joel, is that in line with what you're thinking?
Is it more?

Speaker 3 (06:27):
I mean, I'm just I just figured. I said, there's
no way New York City is safer than Florida, and
more specifically, you know, thinking the Palm Beach area. But
but in general, you just hear story after story after story.
I think there was just another shooting in Times Square
or something, right.

Speaker 1 (06:47):
I mean, every day there's something you can find it.
These same people that are caught, release, what have you.
But yeah, this is absolutely a case where our perceptions
meet reality. Where you are twice as likely to be
a victim of violent crime in New York City, you're
one and a half times more likely to be a

(07:09):
victim of property crime in New York City. There's obviously
no comparison here. And so yeah, this is this is
perception of reality a lot in the same place. But
then you think back to the guy who made the
common originally, and it's that altered state of reality. He
created a reality to where he, oh my god, it's

(07:30):
madness here. I got to get back to my safety
and we could thank the media. You do wonder, you
really do wonder. I mean, it probably is that right.
They're talking about how crazy Florida is, and you know,
New York City and a lot of those you know outlets,
and then this guy afinitely pies into it.
