Speaker 1 (00:05):
This it's the Coach Brian Moore Show with Opah Lac.
I had football coach Brian Moore and now with Coach Moore,
the voice of the Bulldogs Man Riggs.

Speaker 2 (00:23):
Two and oh to start the season alongside coach Brian Moore.
I'm Van Riggs, Coach. What a start for your bunch
last Friday night against Callaway. I know Callaway they've got
some players, but you guys really set the intensity off
right off the bat with two defensive turnovers and then
the offense answer with two scores.

Speaker 3 (00:39):
Yeah, no doubt. I mean I thought we came out
of the gates really fast. You know, we kicked off
to them, we deferred the second half and then within
six minutes we're up twenty one nothing, so really big start.
Devin Dixon had a big turnover, big interception there, did
a great job in his third kind of getting over
the top of a guy and picking that ball off.
And then a'mari had a strip tackle and then recovered

(01:01):
its own fumble. So a great job, you know for
our kids, and the way we started. We did catch
a little lull there and the beginning of the second quarter,
but we worked through that. Defense had to have a
stop to keep it at twenty eight to seven. We
had a fumble going in to make it thirty five
to seven. We'd like to clean up. And it's been
our only turnover of the year and hopefully that continues,
you know, to be one turnover through two games, it's

(01:22):
not not terrible. We'd like to have none. But again,
please are their kids. Got a lot of kids in
the ball game, and you're right, Calloways, got some guys,
and I thought we did a good job of starting
fast in a night that could have been a little
bit a lot, you know for the kids, as far
as the atmosphere and the new things that are going
on and Jumbo trying and all those kinds of things
that we're thankful to have.

Speaker 4 (01:42):
But the first time you see.

Speaker 3 (01:43):
Them as a kid, it's like Christmas morning, you know,
to see them. And our crowd was there and in it,
and I know when we came out of the run
through sign the band started playing. It was loud in there.
And appreciate our people for you know, for cheering and
getting our kids going there a huge part of our energy,
as is the band, you know, and as are the cheerleaders.
So proud of Friday night, a huge step forward. I

(02:06):
thought we got a lot.

Speaker 4 (02:07):
Better from week one to week two, and.

Speaker 3 (02:09):
I thought we played at a really high level for
most of the game. Again, a little inconsistent at times,
but that's what we're working towards every week. So again,
proud of a first home game win, I.

Speaker 2 (02:19):
Really thank you won the line of scrimmage on both
sides of the ball. Defense really set the tone with
the offensive line, paved the way on the ground game again.

Speaker 4 (02:26):
No doubt about it. I mean, you know, we had
some big runs.

Speaker 3 (02:29):
You know, we continue to pull those guards around, and
we had a big knockdown block from Carmel, and you know,
just really please with their offensive line and coach Fleming
and the job he's done, and coach Jatkins and his group,
you know, and then our fullbacks and tight ends as well,
doing a great job there too. Playing a lot of kids,
but we're playing eight offensive linemen and four tight ends
and fullbacks. She got twelve box players that are playing

(02:50):
a lot of football, which is great for us, and
really we never know what combination is going to go
out there first. You know, we're every week is an
open competition from those guys.

Speaker 4 (02:59):
But really the past protection was good as well.

Speaker 3 (03:02):
You know, Kobe threw it a little bit more Friday
night than he has and then Fuller Young got in
and threw a touchdown as well. So just please with that,
Please with the way that you know that our offensive
line is developing now they've got a huge task coming up,
you know, and and so we'll get challenged Friday night,
but just please to where we are and the job
that that front has done.

Speaker 2 (03:19):
Kobe Key, the accuracy he's shown in these first couple
of games, I know, he hasn't been asked to do
a whole lot. Boy, you look back at that Passagejamari
Miller there, and the accuracy on those passes he's throwing
right now, you've got to be pleased.

Speaker 4 (03:32):
Well, no doubt.

Speaker 3 (03:32):
I mean, I think he's a kid that really, you know,
is the moment's not too big. You know, Kobe's a gamer,
and you know we're we're protecting him with some things
that are you know, some simple reads and things like that,
just as we ease him into more and more. But
you know he's going to have to throw that thing around,
you know, to win these Reagion games. And we'll have
to find great balance those nights, and so you know,

(03:52):
we're eager to see him continue to sort of spread
his wings. But our offensive line, fullbacks, tight ends, and
the obviously our receivers you know, getting open, and he's
you know, so far in the year is eighteen of
twenty passing with one drop, so he's ninety five percent
accuracy rate right now. The only other one was really
a throwaway on a third and long to Jamari at
Ben Russell. So we've been really pleased with that strong

(04:12):
five touchdowns out of twenty pass attempts, so we like
that number as well. But again, he's gonna have to
spread it around more. He's gonna have to step up
and convert some big third downs going forward.

Speaker 4 (04:22):
But we're playing where he's at right now. Special teams
is big for you.

Speaker 2 (04:25):
Friday night teen, you got to kick off return from
Jamari and you got a lot of touchbacks from Johnny
and that can be huge in a game like this
against Auburn.

Speaker 3 (04:32):
It's such a weapon, you know, in high school football
to not be able to bring it out, and so
I think you know, with coach Massey and his defense,
if a group has to go eighty, it's really tough
to string together eighteen twelve plays in a row, and
we harp on those things about not letting those cheap
ones and you know, balls being thrown over our head
and that sort of thing. But the special team's piece
completely has dominated the field position, both at ben Russell
and Callaway.

Speaker 4 (04:52):
And that needs to continue.

Speaker 3 (04:53):
And we'll be tested, you know with Auburn, and they're
not just their specialists, but also their scheme, you know,
do a really good job, really sound. I know they've
a lot of time in it, you know, to be
great there. And I know there's been some fakes in
the past and we've worked like crazy to prevent those
things and to make sure that we're clean, making sure
they don't sneak people on the sideline and do some
of those things. So we'll be ready for those things
and hopefully we'll execute, you know, I know that's always

(05:15):
you know, we have those in the bag, as do they.
But I've been really pleased with Johnny, been really pleased
with Zion. He didn't have to punt Friday, which is
I hope he never punts again, you know, for the
rest of the year. But but really pleased with our specialist,
Cam Railey snapping, Epp snapping, Brody holding. You know, Brody's
got some balls on the block, you know on pat
field goal that a lot of kids couldn't, you know.

Speaker 4 (05:35):
So we have complete confidence in him.

Speaker 3 (05:37):
And we're in some swinging gate you know, Friday, and
did some things to where we threw Cam Raley a
ball in the end zone, Brody through it as the quarterback.

Speaker 4 (05:43):
So he's over one on his on his on maybe
his career passing wise.

Speaker 3 (05:47):
But we like to have multiple looks and special teams
and coach Ferguson's doing a great job with that, and
so we worked really hard on those through the two
hour practices the spring, the summer, fall camp. We've been
working special teams throughout and we feel really good about
our specialists and where our special teams are. There's still
another step to take as far as you know, coverage

(06:08):
and being clean in the kickoff game because all of
them are going in the end zone. You know, we've
got to run down there and tackle. But we feel
really good about where we're at right now.

Speaker 2 (06:14):
All Right, we'll talk defense a little bit more with
coach Massy here and just a biit. Let's talk about
the Auburn game in general. I know you're not new
to this rivalry and you know the intensity that comes
along with it.

Speaker 3 (06:23):
Yeah, you know, And just like I told the coaches
and staff meeting on Sunday and the kids on Sunday
as well, and then really through character ed today and
walking them through, you know, how do I go about
preparing for a moment like this? You know, sometimes I think,
and I've told the coaches, I'm the guilty party. You know,
We've done some things even when Coach black One was

(06:43):
the head coach, that I wish we had back as
far as you know, some things that we did to
make the game maybe bigger than it was. You know,
the most important thing you can do in a game
like this is be really focused on the things you
can control, and that's the way you go about it.
Your mentality, the pre and posting out you know, penalties,
those little things and just not getting out of character.
You know, we just need to be the best version

(07:03):
of Opalaca we can be and go play extremely hard,
remember what we're coached to do.

Speaker 4 (07:08):
We've had great practice.

Speaker 3 (07:09):
You know, It's been a weird week as far as
Labor Day and you know, having a morning practice and
our staff getting ready for that morning practice Sunday night,
which was turned into Monday morning.

Speaker 4 (07:20):
You know, work, but just a lot of.

Speaker 3 (07:22):
Work that went into scout cards and the prep because
Auburn is so multiple, you know, and they are so
well coached that you've got to be prepared for so
much that you feel like you just need to keep
hitting those things home and send extra film and make sure.
But the biggest thing is how we manage ourselves and
our emotions. I think will be the complete difference in
this bogram. These are two really good teams, you know,
Auburn's really good, and I think we've got a good

(07:44):
ball team as well.

Speaker 4 (07:45):
But the team that wins a game.

Speaker 3 (07:47):
Like this is the one that can mentally handle all
the external factors, the junior senior stuff, the off the
field stuff that I have threatened lives about, you know,
about making sure that we don't go do anything that
hurts our team. You know, one of our main things
we talk about a lot is protecting the team. And
you know what does that mean. That means protecting my
teammates in games. That means making sure guys are home,

(08:09):
going to sleep, that when a guy wants to.

Speaker 4 (08:11):
Go hang out or whatever. Man, I got to go
to I got to.

Speaker 3 (08:14):
Rest, and so do you, you know, to be to
be the best version of myself.

Speaker 4 (08:18):
You know. So we're we're excited about the game.

Speaker 3 (08:20):
Obviously we understand the implications from a region standpoint, from
a rivalry standpoint, from a community standpoint, we understand all that.

Speaker 4 (08:27):
But if you.

Speaker 3 (08:28):
Try to sort of hold all that, the weight is
too heavy, you know, to dig into all the things.
You just got to focus on what you do every day,
what's gotten us here to this point, how we've been
able to improve this team so far and just keep
getting better step by step. And I told him, I said, look,
you know, win or lose Friday, Okay, I said, you know,
we're going to go right back to work on Sunday.

(08:49):
I said, So, if you win, you can't be too
high like it's the super Bowl and it's over. You
got to go right back to work because we have
regent opponents again coming up, you know, and great teams
on the back end of our schedules.

Speaker 4 (09:00):
That are coming.

Speaker 3 (09:01):
We just got to focus on one step at a time,
playing our best and not getting too high or too
low within the game. As the Ebbs and flows inevitably come.

Speaker 2 (09:10):
And I know you got thirty eight seniors that have
never beat Auburn and know that's on the top of
their mind as well, and they've closed come close because
the past two years double digit leads and one in
Auburn a couple of years ago in the late in
the first half, double digit lead, and then of course
last year, you know, a lead late in the ballgame
they got away. And I know that's that's on their
minds as well.

Speaker 4 (09:27):
Well.

Speaker 3 (09:27):
Then I want it for them, you know, I mean,
we all do. I mean, that's that's a legacy, you know,
a legacy game, a legacy you know, season for those
kids to be able in many ways, to put this.

Speaker 4 (09:37):
Program back to where it should be historically.

Speaker 3 (09:40):
And you know, our kids understand that, but again, we
just don't talk a lot to them about that other
than just do your best, man, and if you if
you leave with no regrets, it's okay. I mean, you know,
I promised this community and this school that we're gonna
play our guts out Friday night and we're gonna leave
everything at Duck Sanfrasadium and then we'll have no regress.

(10:01):
We won't look back on that We've had an incredible
week of practice as far as our prep, and again
you see another level of intensity. You'd like to say
it's another game, but the kids can feel it. And
obviously I just don't want the pressure, you know. I
want to take all that for them, you know, and
I want the adults to take all that for their kids.
And let's take that pressure and say, man, just go
do your best. Let's see what happens.

Speaker 2 (10:23):
All right, Friday night, Dug Sandford Stadium should be good.
I know tickets are going fast. If there's any still
available out there, go fan dot com, make sure and
purchase those visiting tickets. But Thursday, make sure and First
Baptist Church opalaka You're weekly luncheon that's going to be
every Thursday at First Baptist Church. Go ahead, and if
you have an RSV feed, come if you can, and
you'll be previewing the Auburn game and of course recap
in callaway.

Speaker 4 (10:43):
Absolutely yeah.

Speaker 3 (10:44):
And I've got two guests coming this time, so J. D.
Atkins will come and talk about the offense and then
Kenny Prescott. I felt like it was important to have
two Opalaika grads, you know, that were football players. Kenny
had a lot more hair at that point in his life.
But I thought it was important to have those guys
come and talk about what this means. And you know,
there's such great ambassadors for our school and and so

(11:07):
they're gonna come and talk. But I hope that a
lot of people come. We had about forty hour show
last time. I'd like to see there'd be one hundred,
you know, and you can rdsv P again on Facebook
and all that stuff.

Speaker 4 (11:16):
But it's a great Last last week we had.

Speaker 3 (11:17):
Kave McGee come in and talk about our strength and condition.
I think of people took a lot of from that
and it's cool to see the different perspectives and and
and you know what, I want to highlight our coaches
and what a great job they do. You know, it
allows the community to hear them, you know, go through
you know how they coach and the things they look
for in the film and like all the scout and
will of course you know, lay out Auburn and you

(11:39):
know what they have, which is a lot you know,
great players, and so we'll look at those things as well.
But it's a great time of fellowship and friendship and
being able to talk and celebrate our kids at the church.

Speaker 2 (11:49):
All right, I hope to see you there Thursday, first
Baptist Church and Opal like when we come back, we'll
be talking with Opak and defensive coordinator Adam Massy as
The Brian Moore Show continues after this. Back here on
The Brian Moore Show, Van raised alongside defensive coordinator out
of Massy and coach. You gotta be happy with the
group where they played last week, coming out with two
turnovers there off the bat.

Speaker 4 (12:10):
Ah, that was a great, great start. Uh.

Speaker 5 (12:13):
There old Devin Dixon with a huge interception, Uh, first
one of his career. Mank that was exciting to see.

Speaker 4 (12:19):
He's worked, He's.

Speaker 5 (12:20):
Worked hard, so that was pretty incredible. And then Smiley,
Uh they with a strip strip sack. Uh, they'd cause fumble.
I was able to recover it. So huge, huge, huge
to start the game, uh that way especially, so that
was a that was exciting to see.

Speaker 2 (12:37):
I know your defensive line was really challenged going in
that callaway game, and boy did they respond.

Speaker 4 (12:41):
They've had a good game.

Speaker 5 (12:42):
They did, they played well. They they you know a
lot of their pass protection and stuff like that. They
obviously doubled league and doubled Smiley. Uh, and it gave
a chance for old baby tj uh, you know, to
to show out. So he had an incredible game for
so by four. Uh, the best game he's had. And
he's been coming along here the last couple of weeks

(13:03):
and it's been solid. But yeah, they were across the
board like foot and in Altrie uh and Smiley, Uh,
those guys right there, and then you mix in you know,
Bradon Stinson and those guys there. It was a it
was a good day.

Speaker 2 (13:16):
Talk about your secondary and then the linebacking court linebackers
really shined in week one. You mentioned, we mentioned the
interceptions the secondaries had just defense as a as a
whole there. I know, the linebackers really showed.

Speaker 4 (13:28):
Out in week one. Yeah, absolutely, they had a great week.

Speaker 3 (13:31):
Uh.

Speaker 5 (13:31):
The d line kind of stole the tackles last week,
so not a bad thing uh for those guys uh there,
But yeah, man, Tyd Hudson and Tyler Moore and AJ Jackson,
the three seniors that we have there at linebacker played
really really real well the first week and was able
to they make a lot of plays uh the first
week secondary wise, Uh, those guys, I mean a huge

(13:53):
interception by Devin and uh Man. Carson Moss has just
been a consistent guy for us both weeks, you know,
and so he's made play after play after play there.
And then you know in the back end being able
to make some guys in uh to see some guys
Keevin King and then h Vin Sweet you know, he

(14:14):
played a lot, made a huge tackle last week. Just
a kid that man just bust his tail and then play.
So it's great to see those guys there. Tyre's pitts
is Is is a consistent weekend and week out guy,
so he's been good leaning ball mixed in there his
week's safety as well. And then you know the other corner,

(14:34):
o court ingram is Is is a guy that's played
a lot of football and so he's he plays consistent
every week as well.

Speaker 4 (14:42):
So it was it was a great week.

Speaker 5 (14:44):
You know, to get those guys, you know, to see
them make some plays, makes him turnovers, make some big
tackles there. So it was it was exciting.

Speaker 2 (14:52):
I know, this is the kind of game defenses love
to play, a big rivalry game like this. You know,
you're you don't have to tell your great much to you.

Speaker 5 (14:58):
No, you don't ever have to tell them. Uh, you know,
as as a coaching staff, you're gonna go through You're
gonna prepare just like you do any other week.

Speaker 3 (15:06):
Uh.

Speaker 5 (15:07):
You know, everything's gonna be the same, preparation wise, with
a breakdown and then game planning and all that stuff there.
It It just, yeah, you don't have to say a
whole lot, you know, throughout the week or even on
game day. They they know what's what's asked of 'em.
But I know it's Coach Moore has been preaching it,
and it's it's the truth. And those guys that in
this type of game, you know, just taking a deep

(15:30):
breath and playing it one play the plot, one play
at a time. Uh, you know is is is the
way you have success, you know, in this game. And
I've been here long enough to see it on both
ends of it. So it's a fun one.

Speaker 2 (15:42):
Been a part of this rivalry, like you said, for
a while now, and you're very familiar with this coaching
staff on the other side too.

Speaker 5 (15:47):
Oh man, Absolutely, I'm good friends with Scott Golsby. Uh.
It was to DC over there is good dude and
want Sunday school class at church. Great guy, Uh, there
and and uh coach Johnson, Brandon Johnson.

Speaker 4 (15:59):
Uh, I was.

Speaker 5 (15:59):
Actually his mentor at the middle school. Uh, his first
year of teaching coming in at the middle school. Uh there,
he coaches receivers over there, so he was there with
us at the middle school. So yeah, I've been here
since three and if coached in it, you know in
the middle school wise you know, crazy thing middle school.
Then you played him twice a year, you know, so
that was always fun uh there. But it's it's it's

(16:22):
been a it's a it's a great, great robbery to
be a part of what is well.

Speaker 2 (16:26):
Coach, good luck Friday night, appreciate the visit, look forward
to seeing your defense play.

Speaker 4 (16:30):
Good Absolutely, look forward appreciate you.

Speaker 2 (16:32):
Having best coach had A Nassy defense coordinator Adam Nassy.
We'll come to be back next week, recap and hopefully
a big Auburn win. We'll preview and be looking ahead
at the matchup against jag Back at Bulldog Studium next week.
Right back here on the Brian Moore
