Speaker 1 (00:03):
This is the Coach Brian Moore Show with Opah Lake.
I had football coach Brian Moore and now with Coach Moore,
the voice of the Bulldogs man racks.
Speaker 2 (00:22):
Tough loss on Friday night to the Auburn High Tigers
along with coach Brian Moore. I'm Van Rice, coach. There
were so many good things that happened in the ball game.
I know they've scored and the outcome you wanted, but
just kind of tell us your thoughts after having a
few days to think on it.
Speaker 3 (00:34):
Well, obviously, I'm really proud of our team as far
as you know, how prepared I thought we were, how
this one I thought we were for the most part,
the little things that before and after, you know, the
play penalties we didn't have, and so pleased with that
part of it. Please do our coaching staff and I
thought they gave our kids a chance. What I'm not
pleased with is the fact we didn't finish. And that's
(00:57):
my job. My job is to help us finish and
teach our kids how to do that and how to
stay you know, stay the course and understand when you
know we're up twenty one fourteen with ten minutes left,
how to, you know, keep our foot on the gas,
and so you know that part of it. I'm thankful
for our community coming out, and you know, I thought
the atmosphere was incredible.
Speaker 4 (01:16):
I've missed that.
Speaker 3 (01:17):
You know, It's been almost ten years from me since
I had seen that game, and uh, just just incredible night.
You know, they've got a great football team, but so
do we, and so you just hate that. You know,
we'll play here or there, you're all. But but again,
we don't have to have moral victories here. You know,
what I said at the end of the night. I meant,
you know, is that that I was brought here to
figure out a way to get this program to win
(01:38):
games like that, and that's what I plan to do.
Speaker 4 (01:40):
And but again, you.
Speaker 3 (01:41):
Know, I'm proud of proud of our work last week,
but we've got to be better. We'll have more of
those games where they're twenty one fourteen and hopefully we're
on top, you know, And so we got a long
way to go. But I think if there's any indication
about our response, I think our kids will play well
this week and bounce back really well.
Speaker 2 (02:00):
Two hundred and twenty four yards on the ground. Calvin
A big night for him, one hundred and seventy five
yards Russian. You got to love the ground attack.
Speaker 4 (02:06):
Yeah, I mean, you know, that's who we need to be,
you know, right now.
Speaker 3 (02:08):
And we need to find more balance as we go,
you know, and we've got a quarterback, a couple that
can play and.
Speaker 4 (02:13):
That can help us do things.
Speaker 3 (02:15):
You know, I'm sort of the conservative, you know, voice
on the headset and things like that sometimes because I
believe in our backs. I believe in Calvin, I believe
in Jordan, I believe in Blake.
Speaker 4 (02:25):
Our cues can run it.
Speaker 3 (02:26):
We've not asked a lot of that, but we will
as we go down the stretch. And so Tommy Johnson,
I mean there's several that can that can play. And
in our offensive line, you know, we're playing eight guys
up there, and we feel really good about that our
entire box, our tight ends and fullbacks as well. So
you know, please with our run game, we do have
to find more balance and more explosives.
Speaker 4 (02:44):
I think that was the thing is that all the
offense was tough Friday night. We did move it.
Speaker 3 (02:48):
We did have two hundred and twenty plus yards Russian,
so that was really good. Yalvin obviously had a massive night,
but you know, we've got to find more balance to
open up some of those holes, to push that you know,
push that average up, and you know.
Speaker 4 (02:59):
So that again we can be more explosive.
Speaker 3 (03:01):
We got to find Ja Mari more touches and quest
Johnson and Bennett and Brody and some of those guys.
So we want to spread that ball around a little
bit more, and so we worked really hard on that
this week. But really, please where we're at on the
ground right now.
Speaker 2 (03:12):
Even though you found yourself down late twenty eight to
twenty one, you had a chance driving down to potentially
tire or maybe go for two and win the ball game.
Just a crazy tip pass there at the end. But
you want to be in position to have a chance
to win those games. And you were there.
Speaker 4 (03:24):
Love our response all year. You know, they scored twice.
We had had like three three and outs and then
they hit the big pass.
Speaker 3 (03:30):
That was such a momentum game. We talked about that,
man last week. You know about that game and how
it's felt over the years and how you have sort
of handled the ebbs and flows, and I thought for
our team in.
Speaker 4 (03:41):
That moment to be down twenty eight twenty one.
Speaker 3 (03:42):
We had given up fourteen straight, you know, and we
had scored fourteen straight in the third quarter. You know,
Calvin had a huge run to start third. So they
are huge momentum shifts. But for us to drive back,
you know, and have a chance to go in and score,
and you know, we don't know at the moment what
our decision would have been, you know, but I believe
in our kids, and so whatever decision we were, to
live with that outcome, but driving the score and just
(04:04):
had a ball tip unfortunately, but again, just proud of
the effort.
Speaker 4 (04:09):
But we have to make those plays in those moments.
Speaker 3 (04:11):
The mall can't be tilled, you know, it can't do
it in the moment when we're up twenty one to fourteen.
Speaker 4 (04:16):
We can't give up a seventy seven yard pass over
the top. That can't happen.
Speaker 3 (04:19):
And so, you know, I think we'll go back to
the drawing board and continue to work on the end
of the game scenarios like we do every week. And
you know, it helped me some though, I'll be honest
with you know, some of those things we kind of
go through the motions in practice.
Speaker 4 (04:31):
Even though I'm on out on every second.
Speaker 3 (04:33):
Almost about getting things done and understand the significance of
the play until you deal with it in the in
an actual game, especially one like Auburn.
Speaker 4 (04:41):
You know, it's hard to put stock that.
Speaker 3 (04:43):
Much stock into it to where you need to be
from a mental focus standpoint as you prepare for those moments,
because it needs to be just second nature to you.
If you're out there thinking in those moments when there's
a minute forty five and you're at the plus twenty
eight and you're trying to drive the score and then
go for two, then it's you're too late, you know.
And so we've got to continue to work on that
and sharpen o ourselves. And like I said, this week's
been great in doing that, but there are going to
(05:04):
be more games like that down the stretch that we're
gonna have to find a way to win.
Speaker 2 (05:07):
Brody Jones two. We mentioned the ground game, what an
incredible catch he had in the end zone, and then
I know he was the one that came up with
the fumble recovery too.
Speaker 3 (05:14):
You know, I'll be honest with there's not another kid
on this team I'd like to put on the bottom
of that pile. And then Brody and that is like
everything a compliment that you know, Billy and Karen and
you know just who the type of young man they've raised.
Speaker 4 (05:26):
You know, he's just a doll. You know, it's in him, man.
Speaker 3 (05:29):
And and so he went up over the top of
the kid, probably Kobe I thought should have run the ball.
I thought he had room to run the ball in
the end zone and threw it anyway, and Brody goes
up over and catches it clean. And then we you know,
we try to throw back to the quarterback, is what
was happening, and we kind of tossed the ball behind.
Speaker 4 (05:45):
Might have been the only mistake Calvin made was that toss.
Speaker 3 (05:48):
And so but Brody went down there and got it,
and then you know they had an unsportsable like conduct
and we get back on the chains and then Calvin
catches the wheel and makes the first down and so
here we go, you know, we found life again.
Speaker 4 (05:58):
And but that all had to do with.
Speaker 3 (05:59):
The desire to both catch them all over top of
the defender and go into that pile and get that ball.
Speaker 4 (06:04):
And that's who Bradie.
Speaker 3 (06:05):
Jones is so proud of him, but again proud of
our fight in general.
Speaker 4 (06:09):
We just got to finish and play at a little
bit better at the end, all.
Speaker 2 (06:12):
Right, going in the big region game at home against
jag on Friday night, What's the been the mindset? How's
the kids bounced back? How's the week of practice?
Speaker 3 (06:19):
I'll be honest, you know, I thought we had an
incredible you know, there are all these teachable moments, you know,
And I was a little bit.
Speaker 4 (06:25):
Short, man.
Speaker 3 (06:26):
I'm sorry about that on the radio, but I wanted
to get to that locker room, you know. I felt
like like raw emotion after the Auburn game, you know,
and for me, like the prep for the next week
and like the future started right then, right when the
door slammed on that game. I felt like it was
an incredible moment to go and talk to our team,
you know. And I didn't let anybody else.
Speaker 5 (06:45):
In the room.
Speaker 4 (06:45):
It was just me and the kids.
Speaker 3 (06:46):
And I was upset at the beginning, and I said,
I'm not sad, I'm just ticked off, you know, I'm
mad like you should be. And I said, because not
that you and me, you know, because it's my job
to teach you.
Speaker 4 (06:59):
How to do this. That's why I'm here.
Speaker 3 (07:01):
And I hadn't done that yet, you know, and we
just worked so hard for the last eight months to
get to that point.
Speaker 4 (07:06):
But I also needed I took a deep breath and
I said, look, this is not the end. I told you,
win or lose. This is not the super Bowl. You know.
This is part of the process of how we become great.
Speaker 3 (07:16):
As a football team and how our program gets back
to open like a football This is.
Speaker 4 (07:21):
Part of it. You know.
Speaker 3 (07:21):
Those failures, man, are so important. I hate them, but
they're so important to our growth. And so we talked
about that, and I felt like Sunday was really good.
We came in and met, you know, and and then
Monday I thought we were a little bit little lull. Monday,
I didn't think it was a great day.
Speaker 4 (07:38):
We were tired, you could tell it pretty fatigue. You know.
Speaker 3 (07:40):
We just put so much physically and emotionally into that game.
For I was tired, I know, and I was too,
like I felt, you know, just like a zombie really
on Monday. But Tuesday I told the coaching staff, I said, man,
the energy's got to be better today.
Speaker 4 (07:52):
And we put the ball down and scrimmaged. I mean,
we were really competitive.
Speaker 3 (07:55):
We tackled to the ground, I felt like we needed
to find our edge again, and I thought we had
an incredible day Tuesday. We had a really great morning
this morning Wednesday morning, and just feel.
Speaker 4 (08:05):
Really good now.
Speaker 3 (08:06):
I was concerned Monday, just again the hangover of how
you felt after a game like that, but I really
felt good about how we've come out of that and
been better at midweek. But I think we'll play well
against Jack. I think our kids understand that. You know,
we're frustrated about Friday, but now we just got to
get better, I mean, every week and just keep pushing.
Speaker 4 (08:26):
We don't care who the opponent is.
Speaker 3 (08:28):
I know that's cliche, but it's really true. Like we're
focused on a Phlika and how much better this ball
club can be.
Speaker 4 (08:34):
Because I mean when.
Speaker 3 (08:35):
I say I think we're gonna have another chance, I
think we've got a lot to do. Okay in the meantime,
and incredible teams top five teams down the stretch to play.
But I really feel like and we've lived it. The
coaches have been here a long time, and the guy
you're gonna hear from in just a minute, he's lived
it about playing a team twice, and I really feel
like I want to see how much better we can
get in that eight or nine week span until we
(08:55):
get to that game and just see where we're at
from that point. But again, it's one step at a time.
It's focusing on the next opponent and being great and
having great practice and great mental prep and then coming
out and glad to be back home, because how good
do we play against Callaway? Hopefully you know we'll repeat
that and start fast and play really well early in
that game and get off to a fast start and
show I think the biggest thing you and I have
(09:16):
talked about this off the ear, but it's our response
to both winning and losing. How do we respond the
next week every week to make ourselves better.
Speaker 4 (09:24):
I'm excited to see how we play Friday.
Speaker 2 (09:26):
Yeah, two home games back to back. Two looking forward
to that, and it starts with Jag Friday night. Don't
forget luncheon on Thursday, first Baptist Church Opalaika starts up
at noon and you'll preview the game and of course
recap Auburn a little bit too.
Speaker 4 (09:37):
Yeah, and Calvin and coach Landers are coming.
Speaker 3 (09:40):
Tomorrow as well, so hopefully all Calvin's family come out
there and see him and eat with us and everything.
Speaker 4 (09:46):
I don't know how he feels about that. I'm eager
to watch him.
Speaker 3 (09:48):
But you know, I'll say that, you know, we're excited
about the week. I'm thankful we had I think sixty
this past week at the church. I hope we have
one hundred this week and we'll start looking at different angles.
And you know, all of our guys just works so hard,
and I think it's a cool way for our fans
to see, you know, how how what our players know.
Speaker 4 (10:05):
It's so much more than just lining up and playing.
Speaker 3 (10:08):
You know, we literally have hours and hours and hours
of film and and and prep and practice and all
that to get ready. And I think it's a cool
way to highlight some things in a different vantage point
for people to see.
Speaker 4 (10:18):
So I hope people come out.
Speaker 3 (10:19):
And support our kids and and and come to the
church tomorrow at twelve, have a good lunch and watch
a little bit about Auburn and about Jack.
Speaker 2 (10:27):
All right, we come back. We've got offense, our offensive
running backs coach Ben Landers and Calvin Hugly is our
guest on the way next year on The Brian Moore Show.
Back here on The Brian Moore Show with running backs.
Coach Ben Landers and Calvin Huglely, who had a big
night Friday night in the win against Auburn, talk about
(10:48):
these running backs and talk about the running game. Coach Landers, boy,
it has been outstanding.
Speaker 6 (10:52):
It's definitely a blessing to have these guys. My little work,
hard work at stream the horn. Calvin right now is
the feature back. He's had three big games. I'm over
hundred yards a game. I sitting there other night trying
to figure out how long it's been since I've had
a guy do that. I think er Watch was probably
the last guy he's been able to put up numbers
like that.
Speaker 4 (11:08):
But he's been very impressive.
Speaker 6 (11:11):
And the good thing about our group is that, you know,
I've got three guys right now that you know, but
anywhere else they if they transferred and went to school
somewhere else, they'd been starting running back. So trying to
be able to manage and balance that and trying to
get those guys touches has been.
Speaker 4 (11:24):
A challenge for me.
Speaker 6 (11:24):
But I told Calvin said, man, were you're toting it
like you're toting it. It's hard for me to take
you off the field. Like the only time you're coming
off is when you're tired and you're tapping that helmet. Otherwise,
I'm gonna keep We're gonna keep feeding you.
Speaker 3 (11:33):
Man.
Speaker 4 (11:34):
Our offensive line is they're playing lights out.
Speaker 5 (11:36):
They are.
Speaker 6 (11:36):
You know, it's probably the biggest offensive line we've had
a long time, and they're very, very impressive. Like Coach
Moore said, we rolled about eight guys in got good depth,
so we got fresh legs. So it's, man, it's fun
to watch these guys. And of course we get out
on the perimeter and you've got quarterbacks blocking oil field,
you got receivers Brody Jones out there absolutely killing folks.
So I mean, it's it's a lot of fun to
coach these guys.
Speaker 4 (11:56):
Man.
Speaker 6 (11:57):
Jordan Wats does an awesome job of pushing Calvin, making
him better. Tommy Giants is right there, you know, nipping
on the tail, trying to you know, trying to get
out there and.
Speaker 4 (12:04):
Get some touches too. So uh, it's it's been fun.
Speaker 6 (12:07):
Looking forward to another good night Friday night and hopefully
get some more touches to some other guys, and hopefully
another electric night for this other man, be cause he
definitely deserves it with all the hard work he's put in.
Speaker 2 (12:18):
Calvin twenty three carries one hundred and seventy five yards
a touchdown, and we were talking about the runs over
ten yards. I think he had four runs over ten yards.
How did you feel Friday nine? And just kind of
described you know what you were seeing out there on
the field Friday.
Speaker 5 (12:31):
Uh.
Speaker 7 (12:32):
Coach some Morny told me he was like, go out
there and show what the best she can do and
shows the dumbinant player on the field.
Speaker 5 (12:38):
So that's what I did play. I played with a
fine like that.
Speaker 2 (12:41):
And I think you know, even back in the Benjamin
or in the first game of the season against benjam
and Russell, you were getting hit at the line of scrimmage.
Is still making five and six yards and you know,
how are you able to keep that surge going and
keep your feet driving and just continue to get those
extra yards.
Speaker 7 (12:54):
And the new coaching staff coach from he he teaches
his knee overtoss and how we drive on lis.
Speaker 2 (13:01):
So what's what's the workout process been like in the
all season?
Speaker 4 (13:04):
Coming in this year?
Speaker 5 (13:05):
It was pretty hard at first, but then over time
we didnt get used to it.
Speaker 2 (13:08):
You know, it's you know, and that was an exciting
matchup against Auburn on the other side on wire match
and we were kind of talking. You've known him for
a long time, even through elementary school, so it was
kind of a showcase of two backs. So was there
really a little talking going into that game? Maybe a
little little bit leading into it.
Speaker 5 (13:24):
I don't really not talked to like on the field.
I ain't be nervous myself.
Speaker 2 (13:28):
Just just let it show on the field.
Speaker 5 (13:30):
I don't know what to see.
Speaker 2 (13:31):
What do you think about Blake Johnson because I was
leaving the game and some people were really impressed with
the way he's running the ball too, and that's got
to give you a breather. And he's a pretty big,
pretty big fellow back there.
Speaker 5 (13:39):
Took the ball, Uh, he was pretty good. He ain't
been doing that since we was younger.
Speaker 7 (13:43):
We've betting on the same D League team all that,
so we got a good experience with each other.
Speaker 2 (13:48):
It's a tight knit Gribby what thirty eight seniors and
I know you guys are really well connected, and.
Speaker 5 (13:52):
Tyger said, that's all we did since middle school.
Speaker 2 (13:56):
Yeah, Coach Landers, you talk about a little bit about
Blake Johnson too, because I know when I was in
the game. Several people are going, man, thirty boy, he's
a lower.
Speaker 4 (14:03):
He is a load.
Speaker 6 (14:03):
He's you know, he's always begged me for the last
couple of years, coach, can I get some touches?
Speaker 4 (14:07):
Can I get some touches? I'm like, just be patient.
Speaker 6 (14:09):
We're gonna find out way to gets you some touches
and gets you involved in the run game. I mean,
he's such an effective weapon, blocking, catching the ball in space,
running guys over like last year the Enterprise. I mean,
he's he's just a special, special breed of a player.
And to be able to see him, you know, get
involved in the actual run game where he is get
some cares. Man, It's been a lot of fun. He's uh,
he's a load to tackle, you know. Friday night, go
(14:30):
back and watch at them and they don't want to
tackle him. They don't want to tackle six. Uh, you know,
and to have that one two punch, and you know,
especially getting up on our center playing some old school
you know, smash mouth football, man, it's very very exciting.
So it's it's a lot of fun getting see those
two guys go out there and compete.
Speaker 2 (14:46):
Calvin, how are you feeling after carrying so much here
in the first three games. You're ready for Friday night, sir,
over all right, and you can hear more from Coach
Landers and Calvin Hugley coming up Thursday. Of course, first
Baptist Church in Opalaika. Don't forget Coach Moore's lunch began
at twelve o'clock. And we'll be right back here next
week for the Brian Moore Show as we hopefully recap
a big Jag win and get ready for a home
game against Smith's Station next week. Right back here on
(15:08):
the Brian Moore Show.
