I'm Matt Norbelt talking with Fresno Statewomen's basketball coach Jamie White, who made
it just in the Nikata got hereright before we started. Coach, Let's
talk about what you guys have beendoing the last couple of weeks, because
we haven't seen you in a littlebit. You've won three of your last
four games. You're starting to peekat the right time and playing much better
(01:10):
basketball. Yeah. I think we'vereally had a couple weeks of just what
I think is where we need tobe, and also with that experience and
the transition from so many young kidsand so many transfers coming in that we're
just finally playing together. Well,we kind of worked through some things as
(01:32):
coaches and as players of what looksgood, what feels good, what our
kids are really comfortable running, andI just feel like it's all been coming
together at the right time. Talkme through some of your players for you.
You've got a lot of youngsters thathave been playing a lot for you
as freshmen, but now you getto this kind of part of the season,
they're kind of sophomores. With allthe minutes that they've put. What
(01:53):
have you seen from the development fromyour youth, because that was one thing
we really highlighted coming into this seasonto where they started to where they are
now. Yeah. Well, Imean, obviously starting two freshmen this week,
I had a meeting with with bothKylie and Tajia, And you know,
when you look down there and yousee six hundred minutes that they play,
you know there, and they've gottenbetter every game. So no matter
(02:17):
what it's it's been, maybe indifferent areas, maybe it's defensively or or
taking care of the ball or shootingor something like that, but every game
I've felt like they've gotten better atsome aspect of the game. You know,
Jah Harvey, you can't say enoughabout Jaw. She's been able to
come in and really help us inthose wins overcome, whether it's overcome some
(02:39):
defensive pressure or help break the pressor hit big time shots. I mean
in in Boise had we had acouple more stops, we'd have got that
game. And I think she wentfor ten of our last twelve points,
had a career high. Coach talkedto me really about Jaw because that's the
young lady I've kind of I wantto see if you're kind of thinking the
(03:00):
same thing. I thought she couldbe in the running for defensive player of
the year, just how good sheis on ball defending. I know obviously
Abby Muse at Boise State with allthe block shots, but John defensively,
she just makes it difficult for theopposing guard. Yeah, she is her
reaction time and her read on theball is really good. Even today we
(03:20):
are just practicing and I swear youcan't pass around her, like she's so
quick to the ball and she's strongand and rarely makes contact. So yeah,
I do think so. And ifnot this year, definitely that next
year. She also, you know, is coming off the bench, so
hopefully you know, maybe something likesix person off. But yeah, she's
(03:46):
she's just getting started, and we'rereally excited about that and what she brings
our team really needs and we kindof get behind her and get energy from
from some of not only her defenseor offense. Her ability to see a
floor, she passes to the pickand roll, she she passes to a
post slide, she can find differentpeople, and her her passes are bullets,
(04:09):
So yes, they are. Italked to Beans actually about that,
trying to catch some of those bulletsand being ready and coach. This year
in the Mountain West Conference, it'sso bunched up. Coach, You've got
really from a second all the waydown to about that ninth spot. It's
just so compacted. A couple ofgames here or there, just talk to
(04:29):
me really about kind of the parodyin the conference this season where it just
seems like any given day, especiallythis year, any can beat anyone.
Yeah, I mean for us togo toe to toe with Boise at their
place, and for the number twoteam, I thought, I thought that
was you know, kind of telltaleon really what you're saying. Anybody can
(04:49):
win any night. The road ishard, and again, I feel like
our team plays well on the road. I think we're prepared, and you
know, if we could clean upjust one or two runs, I think
we're We're in the mix constantly.I do think obviously un l B.
I think they clinched it last night, did and and they have you know,
(05:14):
asserted themselves above and beyond. Butbut even in their game here,
I thought, I thought we playedwell. I thought, you know,
again, they have a lot ofpower. They have a lot of positions
inside outside, can shoot the three. Their defense is solid, and you
saw that last night with Boise. They turned it up, you know,
with about three minutes to go,I thought Boise was they're gonna be the
(05:38):
winner. So but other than them, I I really feel like one,
we've played everybody well, and numbertwo, I feel like, you know,
for the most part, we've beatenwho we should have you know,
I would love to have that winat Nevada. Yeah, you know,
if I could, if we couldhave just had that back. And then
down the stretch, I mean, you go to a Wyoming where they've lost
(06:00):
and they don't usually lose at home, so they've lost there, to New
Mexico, to UNLV and recent soand then you know, we get New
Mexico here where New Mexico's dropped theball sometimes so and we're getting better.
So that's not good. Don't dropthe ball, and we're getting better.
We're coming at you. So we'reexcited. We're excited to go to Wyoming.
(06:24):
I mean again, we have fifteenkids on our team, and about
twelve of them haven't been to Wyoming. So we're excited to go there.
And we always like playing there.Got to get there, got to practice
and feel the burn of that thatyou know, air a little bit.
But yeah, and and really wehave nothing to lose. Everybody else is
playing, you know, for kindof something, and I just think we
(06:47):
were kind of going in with thatnothing to lose. Let's go, let's
let's really tune up for the tournament. Yeah, last time you guys,
played at Wyoming. It was adouble overtime game on New Year's Eve.
That was one of those late ones. It was one of those classic games.
Coach talks to me about what youguys been doing in the month of
February because you had that skills campgoing on this month. How did that
(07:08):
go for you guys that you weredoing it every Sunday in February. Yeah,
it was awesome. You know,I thought it might be hard to
get in there. You know,we came back from Boise, we had
to get in there, we cameback from Utah State. We had to
get in there on Sunday. Butyou know, working with those young kids
with such energy and excitement and wewere full. We had you know,
(07:29):
we had over forty kids and wehad our players were there, and I
thought they would, you know, kind of be a little tired and dreading
it and you can't work, youcan't work with the kids with the game
you love and not you know, really have your you know, your heart
full and fill your bucket for thatday. So it's been awesome. We've
(07:50):
had a lot of people ask canwe are you still do it? Can
you do it until the summer? Our next clinic is in July. And
that's the soonest right now that wecan do a clinic. But you know,
it makes you, It made you. It made us feel so good
and it was so in our wheelhousethat it almost was easy. And so
(08:11):
you know it's something that we'll probablycontinue to do year to year. Yeah,
it's a great thing that you guysare doing. That was every Sunday
in February for just an hour, right, It was just yeah, it
was just an hour. It waslike, you know, it's kind of
almost like a personal workout for anhour, and kids came, lots of
parents came, uh you know, and they got to take aut you know,
take pictures and get autographs and uh, you know, just kind of
(08:35):

And we welcome you back to CrowingWolf five twenty six through Avenue and
Clovis. It's the Bulldog Basketball Hourpresented by Proper Defense Law On Matt Norble
talking with women's basketball coach Jamie White. We're gonna get a few of the
players over here shortly, and FrankaWittenberg, Maria Ka and Malaya Lesser.
But we're still wrapping things up withthe coach Jamie White and coach, You've
(12:45):
got two big games. We talkedabout Wyoming, which is on Saturday.
You guys leave for laramiet tomorrow, but then you've got Senior Day on Tuesday
against New Mexico and you're gonna behonoring a couple of players. Who are
you gonna be honoring And talk tome how important that game is on Tuesday?
Yeah, well, we're only excitedto play in front of our home
crowd for the last time. We'vehad great crowds the last couple of games.
(13:05):
So excited to and and I think, you know in New Mexico,
who is very beatable, I feellike we are we matched to them well
and you know, a game that'sgonna be very competitive. So uh,
for our Senior night, I don'twant to call them foe, but they
are seniors with with still some timesof bene So we're gonna we're gonna be
(13:31):
recognizing Keelee Brown, who It's it'shard because she got injured. She was
over COVID so she actually has moreyears left, but this is truly her
fourth year. And then Diagenet HarveyJah, Uh, she will be this
this it's kind of hard to explain, but she would still have some time
(13:52):
and uh, but we want tomake sure that we have a senior night
for them. We recognize them andthen whatever happens happened. So got New
Mexico. You talked about you guysmatchup, Well, really it was a
it was a great game from anoutials perspective. The first time you guys
played at the pit, it wasjust entertaining. Gets to Yeah, it
going just to watch with that thatscenery in that background. Every time you
(14:13):
play New Mexico, your styles clashso well that it's an entertaining game.
But yeah, that is it.That is a game, and that'll be
an important game for both teams goinginto that conference tournament. And coaches,
we take a look as we kindof wind down the regular season and you've
got Vegas. It's it's hard tosay it, but it's one week from
Sunday. It's already here. Imean, where's the season going. But
when you look at the Mountain WestConference tournament, I mean you don't want
(14:37):
to say quote unquote wide open, but it kind of has that feel that
like nothing would really shock you inVegas. Yeah, well, obviously the
league lader in UNLV has almost losta couple of times. So, I
mean, last night you thought Boysewas gonna get them. They almost lost
to Wyoming, and then they gotbeat at home against New Mexico. Yep,
(14:58):
so I I think, you know, really you catch them and again
in the tournament. Absolutely anything canhappen, and we all know that.
So but the reality is we're focusedon Wyoming and you know, and getting
better every day, and then whenthe tournament comes, it'll be really exciting
(15:20):
to have our kids, especially someof those younger kids go there for the
first time. It's a different typeof atmosphere stepping on that floor. Let's
bring in some of the players now, we're going to bring in Maria Kay,
Franka Wittenberg, and Malaya Lassour aswe're gonna chat with them. This
is the Bulldog Basketball Hour presented byProper Defense Law. We are at five
(15:41):
twenty six Spruce Avenue in Clovis asthey're getting their headsets on. We've got
a couple of freshmen and a sophomore, and we've got Maria Kay right next
to me. Then you've got malayalLasour down the road, and then Frank
of Wittenberg all the way in theend, can you guys all hear me.
Yeah, okay, Franka, thatheadset looks huge on you right now.
It's all right, you're you're good. So, guys, I was
(16:03):
talking to head coach Jamie White aboutjust where you guys started to where you
are now. I'm gonna go downthe road a little bit, Maria.
Where do you feel like your gamehas evolved from the beginning of the year
to where you are right now?So just finding my role At the beginning,
I wasn't sure where I fit inthe team, and I just figured
out that like my strength and thebasket, the defense and the rebounds are
like what we need sometimes. Andthen when I get in I'm just ready
(16:26):
to do that Malaya for you.I say it on the air all the
time. I say, hey,if I'm playing a pickup game, a
one on one player, I wantI want Malaya lasour. That's what I
want. So talk to me aboutwhere you started to where you are now.
I started to get a little bitmore run down with coach. I
would say, in the beginning,I was a lot. I was hesitant.
I was very hesitant because I didn'treally know my position at this high
(16:48):
level. So it was really likefinding my place and finding myself. But
as I became comfortable with the coachesand the players, I became more confident.
I would say, Frank, whatabout you, because obviously you played
last season with Coach White, youplayed in every single game, and this
season you came in after you playedwith the German national team. So where
you are at the beginning to whereyou are now, how do you feel?
(17:11):
I feel like I developed my defensivegame a little bit more. I
got strong under weight room. Ithink that's like one of my focuses also
this year, so I can likehold or defend also bigger players better.
It's like that was my main focusand now like I just want to get
more of my shots up and makingthem. I think that's like one focus
(17:33):
I want to set on now forthe next last couple of games. Talk
to me about your summer, Franca, So you were playing with the German
national team over the summer. Howwas that experience and what did you learn
playing with you know back home thatyou can implement now with the team.
I mean it's just like a greatatmosphere that we had a great team,
great coach. Yeah, he wasalways there for me. We already had
(17:57):
a connection before, Like that's Ithink I also a part that played into
it. But yeah, over thesummer we had a couple training camps and
everything, and I think just gettingthe experience to play against other nationals,
national teams, other countries, otherplayers with different styles, I think that
(18:18):
helped me to get where I am. Now, what did you you guys
play together? But not right?Did you guys play back what you were
saying twenty one? Was that right? So what's it like? You know,
you're on the German national team togetherand then now your college teammates.
It is a different experience. Sowith the national team, I had a
(18:42):
different role I was starting, andlike it was nice getting to know Franca
before I came here because now wekind of understand each other better on the
court when we played together, andit's just like the atmosphere, as you
said, is different. We onlypracticed like for two months straight, getting
to no like random people basically, and then performing for the European Championship,
(19:06):
And yeah, I mean it wasnice knowing her before I came here,
but yeah, it's just like sodifferent and getting to know her for a
long time, like spending time withher and all that. So, yeah,
the lad talk to me about yourhigh school. You're from Portland right
from and yeah you were second teamAll States. It talks to me about
it's like hooping in Portland, Oregon, because there's a lot of good basketball
(19:26):
in Oregon at the high school levelthat people just really don't know about.
I would say, starting for myfreshman year, I was kind of like
how I wasn't begetting when I gothere. I was really hesitant, and
once I burst down my show,I became a starter all for years,
averaging I would say seventeen points pera game, going against a tough competition
(19:48):
and just being people up. SoI would say it was a great experience
basically, and going against all thedifferent competition, even from deeper parts from
Oregon, it was pretty good. What got you into basketball? My dad?
Your dad, he kind of likeI was in his soccer in the
beginning. Yeah, So I wasplaying like three years of soccer and then
my dad was like, hey, here's basketball, and then I was like
(20:11):
all right, And then from thenI just been motivated to get better and
to keep playing. Is there aplayer you kind of look up to that
you kind of model your game afterI was Kyrie Erring is always my favorite
player, So it's like, that'swhy I'm eleven, That's why I was
number two. I always wear shoes, so it was like, yeah,
that makes sense because your game hasa little bit of that too, with
(20:33):
your heasy and all that stuff.Frank, what about you? So what
got you into the game? Youknow you're over in Germany, you're playing.
What got you in? My mom? My mom played and then yeah,
at some point I was picking thatup from her before I did track
and field and swimming, and thenyeah, I sticked to basketball because it
was a team sport and I justlike it more so, Yeah, my
(20:56):
mom got me into it. Imet your mother. I'm in dead last
year when they came over across tosee you play. I haven't seen him
yet this season yet. Have they'vebeen over yet? Yeah, no,
they probably don't come. They camein. We're here for a couple of
weeks. What about you, Maria? Kay? Look at you into hoops?
So, to be honest, Idon't even know. I started playing
(21:17):
tennis when I was three, andI was playing tennis for seven eight years,
and I just realized that I needa team to have my bag because
I was so frustrated during games mostof the time, and so I just
needed someone to support me, havemy bag. And I tried everything,
like from boxing to karate to swimmingto volleyball, like I tried everything.
(21:40):
And then when I was fourteen,I started playing basketball and I just loved
it, and so I just continuedwith that. Well it worked out good
for you. Yeah, talk tome about your background a little bit,
because you played for the German nationalteam. But you told me you can
speak three different languages, because youcan speak Greek, you can speak German,
you can speak English. Yeah, just talk to me a little bit
about your background. So both myparents are from Greek Greece, oh my
(22:02):
god. And yeah, so mygrandparents were Greek immigrants, came to Germany,
stayed there for a while, thenwent back to Greece, and it
was just a lot of back andforth, which is why I learned Greek
first. I was like born inGreece, raised in Germany. But yeah,
it was just like learning Greek firstbecause my whole family's from there.
(22:26):
And then obviously because I lived inGermany, having to like get to know
the other language. And yeah, and then in school, I learned English.
So here we are. What's uh, what was the recruiting process for
you guys? Gonna go through allyou guys on that. For you,
what was it like, you know, talking to coach Jamie White and her
staff and all that. What wasit like for you in the beginning.
(22:47):
I was like, really nervous, because I'm like a nervous person overall.
But it was I feel like itwas very like supportive coaches. They were
taxing me all the time, showinginterest in me. So maybe like I
had another home somewhere else in basicallysomewhere where I could just build other bonds.
I would say, Frank, whatabout you when you were getting recruited
(23:10):
last season? What was it likebefore you came? I would say,
it was kind of the same, like they said, because they always asked
me questions. I feel like theywere really interested in my in me as
a person and not just like asa player or whatever. So yeah,
I think that was like the mainpart that played a huge role, especially
if you come over to another countrylike nine thousand. I don't know Kido
(23:36):
materns right, I don't know themiles, but it's like a whole it's
like a big distance. So havinga good supporting system is like important.
What about you did the strank inthere kind of trying to urge you to
come and how is how is yourrecruiting process? So I talked to Coshmanni
the same year she got recruited.OK, So then we kind of stopped
(23:56):
communication for a bit because I decidedto stay in Germany for another year and
played there with the first division, and so we were in the same room
for the national team and she wason a zoom call with coach Mandy.
So I started like thinking about itagain, and then I ended up getting
another message from them because they sawme over the summer playing with Franca And
(24:17):
yeah, like I came over herefor I think thirty hours, Like I
had thirty hours in the United States, and I had to fly right back
to my practice and then I hada game the next day. Like I
landed and went straight to practice thatday, and so I didn't see a
lot. It was like a reallyshort trip. I saw one practice.
I talked to the girls, andI really liked them, and so that
(24:38):
kind of like convinced me to comehere. It was a cool story.
It's all a little different honestly aswell. This is the Bulldog Basketball Hour.
We're at crol Wolf five twenty sixThrouce Avenue. We're gonna take another
break. We'll come back with morebecause the Bulldogs Women's basketball from Learfield.

(28:06):
Here in Kloks, I am MattOrville. I'm talking with three of the
present State women's basketball players. FrankaWittenberg the sophomore, Maria Kay the freshman,
and Malayalists who were the freshmen.I know we've been talking little hoops.
Let's talk some education. Obviously, you guys are student athletes, You're
not just athletes. So you guyshave your majors picked out? And if
you do, what are you tryingto do with it? Mariam, we
(28:27):
start with you. So I actuallysaw as my first semester in interior design
and then I realized it isn't forme, So I switched over to not
one hundred percent sure yet but journalism. Probably like to hear that, yeah,
and so what made what made youdo the switch? You said interior
design wasn't for you, but journalism. What do you like about journalism?
So it's connected sports. That wasthe main reason interior design doesn't really connected
(28:51):
to sports. Connected to my secondpassion. I would say, like art
and be creative, but at thesame time you do that too in journalism.
You are creative with like topics, what you're saying and this it's a
broad field and I just love sports, so yeah, that's the way to
be, all right, But whatabout you? Right now? I am
in the communications major thinking about changeand I'm kind of still undecided. But
(29:15):
it's just something like to give methrough the year, I guess. But
so I was in a communications majormy high school, my senior year of
high school, and I a stick. I didn't Okay, all right,
all right, why not try itout now? But I was just like
I want to kind of get like, like do something more that I could
(29:37):
run to. I guess it's somethingthat I would enjoy more. So that's
why I would say I'm in theside right now. What's a class that's
been like for you? Your firstyear classes? It was it was a
little rocky in the beginning, butI would say it's it's easier in high
school. I would say it's easierthan high school. Everybody I was like,
it's gonna be it's gonna be worse. I was like, but I
(30:00):
thought the same thing about it.I always thought college was easier than high
school. Yeah, Franco, whatabout you? I'm in the psychology my
chairman now and want to go intothe New York psychology and neuroscience field.
Yeah, oh wow, Yeah,So what's a class has been like for
you the first couple of years?Well? Solid, I mean you have
a lot of g equals here thatI don't like. Well, I already
(30:23):
did that in high school. Whydo I need to do that in college
now? Because it's like that's adifferent system then back right. But yeah,
now that I have psychology courses,I like it more and it's like
more interesting to me. Yeah, what's it like time management for you guys?
Because obviously you've got weight room, you've got film session, you got
(30:45):
practice, and you got class, you got studied, Like, what's it
like time management? Who kind ofkeeps you in line? And do you
guys? Like when I was talkingto Jid and jostle me, she has
three planners, So I mean, like, for you guys, how do
you do it to kind of youknow, get to the right spot at
the right time and get your stuffdone. You have to be honest.
I have two planners and then Ihave my calendar, my phone, and
it's just I think being like inEurope first prepared me for everything because nobody's
(31:08):
scheduling that off for me, Ihad to figure it out. I had
to figure out when I can liftwhat, like when I got time where
I can go, and like Ihad to drive back and forth a lot,
and here everything is in one spot. So that kind of prepared me
for everything. And now I kindof like have a calendar that says what
I have to be at what time, and that just is a perfect thing
(31:30):
for it, way easier. Yeah, what about I would say, I
don't use planners because I'm not thetype to just like, oh, let
me open this right, So Iuse my phone. There's this alcohol TeamWorks
that the coaches put us onto.I use that to like basically track what
classes I have, basically what myschedule is for that day. But I
(31:51):
would say time management. I feellike I manage my time pretty well.
I would say the most difficult partis trying to balance with the busy scheduled
in homework assignments. So it's likeI would say that that's probably the most
difficult part to juggle, but I'mmanaging it pretty well. Frank, what
about you? Yeah, like theyalready said, we have the TeamWorks calendar
(32:15):
where everything like basketball vice is onthere, and like the courses you have,
and I have my separate academic calendarcalendar like all the assignments, so
I keeps you on track with whenI have stuff too. Yeah, that's
please, go, I manage,Frank. I got a question for you.
I did Did I hear a rumorthat you got your driver's license over
the summer? Is that true?Uh? Yeah? Okay, So so
(32:37):
talk me, talked me through thatprocess, and what was it like.
To be honest, I'm not completelyfinish it, okay, but yeah,
I mean I just did it whenI had time, so like before season
started, I did all my knowledgetists and whatever and now yeah, all
(32:58):
congrats there, that's impressed about Yeahfor real, Yeah, I mean I
already had one from back home economedy, it's better if you have your California
one with like so when you you'renot allowed to probably are you can you
still use that one over here?Because so don't you in Germany? Do
you guys you drive on the sameside of the road as we do?
Yeah, everybody, we don't becauseit computers with Australia. Yeah yeah,
(33:22):
so I was gonna say, so, really, nothing changes really right,
except for it's kind of weird becauseyou can turn right on every like sometimes
I just forget and like I standthere waiting for the light to turn green,
and because back home, you can'tjust turn right, okay, So
then people are honking behind and you'relike, that's pretty funny. All right,
(33:43):
talk to me. Let's get backinto hoops, guys. So talk
to me about playing basketball in theMountain West Conference. There's a lot of
different venues that you go to.You got the pit in New Mexico.
You guys gonna experience Wyoming on Saturday. Frank has already experienced that with the
with all the elevation. You gotBoise State as well. Just talk to
me what it's like playing in somany different venues. It's so many different
(34:04):
elevation points and just different places thisseason because it's it's a lot different.
Like I mean, you'll you'll wolfgo in and I'm a broadcast and we're
not playing. I mean, Imight go get a workout in and you'd
be like, ooh, I feelthat, but I'm not running up and
down the court. And then you'llgo somewhere else and there's a in New
Mexico, there is a huge signto let you know, hey, you're
gonna have a tough time breathing. So what's it been like for you?
(34:24):
Interesting? I mean, we wentto Air Force and the first thing we
saw walking into the locker room wasattention, like something danger, and I
was like danger and then it's like, yeah, raised off, collapsing and
all that. I was like,oh okay, but yeah, I mean
you don't expect it at first,Like the first time we experienced elevation,
(34:45):
I didn't expect it to be aslike difficult, But then you go up
and down the court the first timeand you're like, oh, yeah,
that's exhausting, and then having tobe ready to play with that elevation is
also like meant to a lot.But yeah, so you gotta get through
it. Yeah, what about you? Malaya at the guard spot. She's
(35:06):
giving it from the post perspective atthe guard stot. What about it?
So my first time, I'm notgonna lie. The first time it was
pretty bad. I ran out ofbread so fast, and then like I
was just coughing the whole time onthe bench. I was like, what's
wrong with me? Like I wastaking cough drops. It was like,
but I'll say, probably continuing toplay in those environments. Over the next
(35:27):
three years that I have here,I feel like I would get more adjusted
to it. But yeah, it'sreal. What about you, franca Yeah,
elevation gets me every time. EspeciallyI don't know what it is about
Colorado, but Colorado is just terriblefor me. I don't know why because
it's not even like the highest yeahit's not. But like, yeah,
(35:49):
sometimes I do flit in my arms, like it gets so bad I feel
in my arms. I'm okay, stay concentrated and just like push through it.
You've had some pretty good games inColorado, though, Yeah, I
don't know. I like Colorado.I like to play there, but the
animation gets to me. Maybe needthat air often exactly exactly. But Wyoming
will be terrible. I'm not goingWyoming is one of those it'll take a
(36:12):
day to get just you gets tobeing ready by Saturday. But tomorrow will
be a good one for you.Yeah, for sure. Talk to me
about Red Wave. If you guysplaying in front of the State Art Center,
in front of the fans and allthat stuff. Some of them are
from the camps, some of thelittle kids that you guys have worked with
with the camps and all that what'sit like playing in front of the you
know, the present stave fans.Yeah, it's nice to like have fans
in general, because I see allthe colleges that don't have a huge crowd,
(36:35):
and seeing the little kids is solike inspiring and it gets me a
little emotional, to be honest, because like they look up to you and
they want to be like you,and you've been a great example and like
reminding yourself why you play. Likesometimes I want to like drop my head,
but then I'm reminding myself, likethere's people watching you and looking up
to you, so you cannot reallydo that. And then also like we
(36:58):
have all luck of sponsors. Dutyis the one sitting right next to the
court, not here, and lookat her sometimes and she's so funny.
So I just enjoy that. WhatI would say for me, I enjoy
it a lot. It's like becauselike when I first for my first year,
I wasn't expecting to even get thatmuch attention. So it's like even
when I'm like on the bench orlike in the game, they're like,
(37:21):
what like it's like motivating. Iwould say, I really just enjoy just
like seeing the smiles on other kids'faces when they watch us play, and
like basically like, this is myopportunity to show them what it's like to
play at this level and basically likeencourage them to not be like me in
(37:42):
a way, but like encourage themto want to play at that level as
well. And yeah, and themautographs, they'll kill you. Oh yeah,
they'll kill you. They get excitedabout those, by the way,
all around. Oh yeah, ohyeah. Yeah. I feel like that
our crowd got bigger, like thencompared to last year. I feel like,
which I really enjoy especially the firstgame I think air Force was it
(38:07):
was kind of packed and I wasrunning out and I was like seeing the
crowd was like, Okay, thisis super cool. Like it kind of
pushes you more, even like ifthey're like people watching you, you know,
Okay, I need to perform thatyou guys had. Actually we were
talking with Coach White. You've hadtwo really good home crows the last two
games as well. Yeah, talkto me guys about the skills camp that
(38:27):
you guys were doing. I talkedto Coach White from you know, the
coach's perspective, but for you guys, you guys did that. It was
just an hour on a Sunday everySunday in February. But you got to,
you know, work with a lotof kids and help them get better
at basketball. Yeah, I meanwe already had a little experience in the
during the summertime, so it waseasy to like show them because you know
how you can like handle little kidsand depending on the age, So I
(38:49):
had the fifth gradest, I think, and obviously they are a little shy
and like not like little kids. They like see themselves as grown ups.
So it was difficult to like actuallytell them, like, like you gotta
count your layups. Otherwise it doesn'tlike count, we gotta start over.
And it was difficult in that way. But then as soon as they like
got used to me, it wasso nice, like showing them how nice
(39:10):
basketball can be. And some ofthem, I'm not as good as the
others, but seeing them like understandthe game was so like it's not inspiring,
but it was so nice. Didyou keep your voice this time?
Yeah, actually, because in thesummer your voice was gone after the first
day. After the first day, yeah, they at least listened to me,
So that was great. But whatabout what about you with the skills
(39:34):
camp? I enjoyed it. Iseen some of the kids, I uh
that be coached in the summer,so there's like, I know you coach.
I'm like, oh lord, butI would say teaching the kids and
kids and coaching them and it wasit was good. They listen their listeners
than they did in the summer, but basically just like teaching them new skills
(39:55):
and the ways of hoop. Itwas just like like kind of inspire and
I was like, oh, Idon't know how coach. It was like
that. But yeah, Frank, you weren't at the camp over the summer
because you were at the German nationalteam. What was the skills camp like
for you this year? Yeah,it was the first time at a skills
camp because I wasn't there the firsttwo years. It's super cool. I
(40:20):
bringing or teaching them what you knowand what you Yeah, how you developed
as you can bring that to thelittle kid is super cool. I think.
And after like with all those sciencesignatures they want when they come to
you and give your hugs, I'mlike, okay, cool, like they
do like you and I appreciate it. It's super nice. Yeah, this

you back to the Bulldog Basketball Hourat Crolled Wolfdives, six Spruce Avenue in
Clovis presented by Proper Defense Law.As we're gonna wrap things up with our
(44:05):
three student athletes, Franka Edinburgh, and Ria Ka and Malaya Lasser. I
was talking with you guys off theair, and you don't really get too
much free time, and when you'reobviously studying and you're playing basketball and you
got a lot of stuff going on. But when you do have some free
time, is there something that you'dlike to do maybe to relax or just
get your mind right, maybe getaway from basketball. Personally, I love
(44:27):
cooking and baking, so that's somethingthat like calms me down into a long
practice and I just yeah, Ilove doing that. And if if it's
hot outside and the sun is up, we love going through the pool like
also as a team, so that'salways fun. So what's your go to
if you're bacon? Like, arewe talking kegs pies? What are we
talking that? Break? I justliterally I just need a recipe and I'll
(44:52):
try because someone dad is a cookand my mom bakes cakes. Oh wow,
So it kind of reflected on me, you know how to do all
that and yeah, I have funwith it. Okay, So that's where
you guys go to eat then huhokay, okay, all right, Malay.
What about you When you got somefree time and you just want to
get away from basketball? What areyou? What are you doing? I
(45:13):
like to play Fortnite in roadblocks,uh. And then my favorite thing to
do is build legos. You shouldsee my room. There's legos everywhere.
I love legos. Do you getthe legos that are like, you know,
the super expensive ones all you?Oh wow, that was like the
five hundred okay, okay, yeah, but that was I would say that's
that's about it? Is there aspecific kind of lego you go towards?
(45:36):
Like are we talking Star Wars lego? We're talking anything? Like what are
you? What are we going towards? I'm more of like a everything lego
type of person. But it's justlike I would say, the most difficult
the better. Oh wow. Yeah. Also, you're gonna put some time?
Yeah, okay, all right,Franco. When you when you have
free time, what are you tryingto do? Like? Sometimes I just
(45:59):
like to be my room just sleepor like watch some shows, movies or
whatever. But then just going outto eat with friends and taking my time
with my friends. Yeah. Soyou like the American cuisine so far compared
to you know, Germany. Mean, I don't know, because I mean
(46:19):
I don't eat like the burgers oranything because I'm vegetarian, so I like
Bahu's. And I wouldn't say that'slike typical American. It's like I'm not
really I haven't been too many Americanplaces. All right, you two are
playing on the court, you guysget upset, maybe not at each other,
maybe at someone else. Maybe you'reupset with yourself, and you start
(46:40):
speaking German. Does anyone give youguys a look? Like what are you
guys saying back and forth? BecauseI don't think anyone else. Does anyone
else even on the team understand Germannoumano a little bit? But so what
what like when you start doing that, do the coaches just let you guys
kind of go yeah, us toask like what we talk about? You're
(47:01):
trying to understand what we say.But we always have like one teammates in
the middle of us and just lookingat us from the side while we go
off in all language. And sometimeslike you see that there's like like temper
behind it because I'm med or somethingor like frustrated. And then there's someone
looking at me like, what areyou trying to say? What is she
(47:21):
saying? Now? Just look atthem confused, because like why you're getting
you know, a conversation. Soit's always funny, you know, Malaya.
That kind of leads me to friendship. You know, friendship Obviously they
get along, They've got to gota nice little bond when you when you
think of the team obviously as awhole, you get along with everyone.
Are there certain people on the teamthat you're like, Yeah, these are
who I ride with, these arethe people I go with. Who would
(47:44):
you say on your team is kindof like that? First, I would
say at a for at home perspectivebecause our room with it's like all the
freshman's room, So I would saymy roommates most definitely Kylie, Tajan,
Marie k. But I would saylike most like ah, like on the
court kind of like when I'm inlike a giggly mood, I would say
(48:04):
like Marie and d and like whoelse would I say? And Teja?
Those like probably ones that like goofaround with the most I've heard Maria is
actually a pretty big goofball. That'swhat That's what I've heard under the radar.
Keeley was telling me that the otherday, and she was saying,
(48:27):
you wanted you want to figure thatbecause she just seems like she'd be quiet
under the radar, especially lay andMaria together. That's good though, It's
it's important to have that when whenyou stepped in the first time you guys
got to meet obviously you walked intocamp. I think that was the first
time when you get to really meetall the other teammates. What was it
like, Because it's gotta be alittle nerve wracking. You know, you're
(48:50):
stepping into a new spot, anew school, and there's a lot of
people that you don't know and yougot to kind of get along with.
It's kind of different than high school, where you kind of get used to
who you're with. College is kindof you're thrown right into. What's what
was it like for you play?I would say, well, for like
the camp and stuff, we werelike keeping touch sometimes, like hang out
a little bit outside, just liketo get to know each other kind of.
(49:12):
And then but once it came tothe camp, it was just like,
oh, these are people I couldtrust, these are people I could
see myself being around a lot andjust like having good conversations. But I
would just say, basically, mywhole team's a vibe. I guess,
yeah, like we all bond.It was like no like complications within the
team, so it was just likeI just vibe with everybody. So how
you kind of felt Franken when youfirst came. I mean I came later,
(49:37):
So it's just like weird because Ifeel like every other everybody else has
a bond already. But I meanI came back that's you. So I
already knew some other people. Butit's cool, Like I got used to
everyone. They're all cool, dramanice. So yeah, no drama,
super nice. That's that's pretty huge. What about you, Maria? When
you first walked in, you knowit got to meet everybody, What was
(49:58):
it like for you? Yeah,so I wasn't there yet, so I
was like, Okay, the oneperson I can like stick to it I
know is not here. But thething is this year there's so many new
players, so we always kind oflike trying to figure out who we can
be friends with and like who's cool. No, but then we figured out
that we all cool. Like duringthe cab we had the funny situation like
(50:19):
my kids were acting up, andyou know that, I was looking about
teammates for help, but they werestruggling too, so it was just like
so funny to see everybody like strugglebut also how they like figured that situation
out and how we could help eachother as well, and it was just
great. Well, guys, that'sgonna wrap up our time. I still
got to talk to Coach White forone more time. Thanks for joining us
(50:42):

(54:07):
Defense Law Here in Clovis, Iam and Matt Orble talking with Fresno State
women's basketball coach Jamie White. Coach, we just talked to three of your
young players. Your team is fullof youth, yeah, and full of
positivity and laughter. Yeah, that'strue, even if it's at me.
Yes, But talk to me aboutthe three that we just talked about,
(54:30):
Franka and Maria and then Malaya.Just they kind of talked about the recruiting
process, but what they kind ofbring to the table, what they've meant
to your program so far, justin one season for two of them and
then with Franka in two seasons.Right. Well, Franka first, because
she's been here the longest. She'scame in and really gave us great minutes
last year. So she's the otherone that will have been in a tournament
(54:50):
already, but coming in being ableto play multiple positions. She does play
with her national team, so shehustle back and gets in shape and gets
going during the summer as quickly asshe can, and that's important to her.
And we want to support all ofour kids if they want to do
something like that in the summer. So, but I do think too with
(55:14):
Franka, she's she's strong, oneof the strongest kids on our team.
She's able to play multiple spots. It does help her to help us to
have that size in the point guardspot when when she's able to slide in
there. So that's been that's beenreally helpful. Maria Kay. I mean,
it was funny to hear her sayabout when she came on her trip
(55:35):
because it was like in with thewind and gone. And I still remember
we ate at wild Wings because sheloves fried Wings, so I'll never forget
that. And that she was asalmost as tall as coach Mandy. Her
coach Mandy walked in about the sameheight. I was like sweet tall.
And she also very versatile. Sheis a big, strong post player that
(56:00):
really battles and gives us some goodphysicality in there, and then offensively,
she can step out and shoot thethree just as good as anybody. It
was funny when we did our testingthree point testing, she was one of
the first ones to pass it anduh really was impressed by her ability to
shoot outside and face up. Andthen Malaya, Malaya came on a visit
(56:22):
with her family. Family's darling andand I can see that in her dad,
he's a hooper. He has allthe Jordan gear, he's got all
the Nike stuff and just really reallygreat to get to know them. And
then Malaya has brought obviously as you'veseen her ability to get to the rim,
get to a pull up, takecare of the ball, h extremely
(56:45):
fast both latterly and up and down. And really excited about what we can
do with her moving forward as faras putting her in different spots and and
getting her opportunities to score in differentways. Really gonna help our team.
This is going to be our finalBulldog Basketball Hour of the season. And
(57:05):
Coach, we've brought all the differentstudent athletes. Pretty much almost your entire
team is stepped up. And whenthere's one thing and one common thing is
