(00:21):
and by Pepsi Grab of Pepsi zerosugar and cheer on the Bulldogs live from
Crow in Wolf tamp Room in Clovis. Here's your host, the Voice of
the Bulldogs, Paul Leffler. Well, good evening tonight. We are not
at Crow and Wolf. We're outof Pete Baye to Field to pop at

(00:42):
At Stadium because it's a big baseballgame for the Diamond Dogs tonight. Hosting
you see Hervine, an undefeated, nationally ranked and eater team that just beat
UCLA at Dodger Stadium the other night. You know, we have some Dodger
fans here tonight, but we're gonnatalk Bulldog basketball for the next hour as
we lead up to baseball. Hopeyou're on your way to join it.
Come through the Games of Peace BidenField of Bob Bennett Stadium. You can
come meet senior point guard Isaiah Hillor coach Justin Hudson. We are right

(01:04):
across from the beautiful bronze statue ofthe great Pete Biden and right next to
Scott and stand in their dugout clubtable. You can join the dugout club
while you're here tonight, and I'lltell you how to do that in a
little bit. But let's talk withIsaiah Hill, Bulldogs senior point guard.
First thing I got to ask youisay, I ran into Tommy Hopfee,
who's Presno State's switch hitting superstar, who's their closer, he's their best power

(01:27):
hitter. And he said, yeah, I played junior high basketball against Isaiah
Hill. He was the first guyour agent Bakersfield who could dunk. I
said, really, I would didn'tthink of him as a big dunker,
but that's what he said. Said, does that bring back some memories.
It might bring back a couple ofmemories, but I don't think I started
dunking it soil. I was inhigh school for sure. Well, and

(01:49):
then what he then? He said, and he was a really amazing quarterback.
That was his other memory of you. Yes, I did play quarterback
in high school. I was okay, okay, say well, are you
okay now? Because last night hadto be tough. Huh yeah, it
was definitely tough. It was unfortunate. I mean, uh, it's basketball
happens, But I mean my intentionswere never to hit somebody else in their

(02:14):
growing area. Intentionally, I swipedat the ball and they looked back and
reviewed it and they ruled me out. So I mean, like I said,
it is what it is. Butknowing me, I would never do
that to somebody else on the court. Yeah, And what I saw the
replay, I mean, it lookedlike, obviously you're trying to knock the
ball away and then it's it's thelast second thing and your body's kind of

(02:38):
falling away from where Jalen House is. To me, it looked just like
a guy who's trying to do anythinghe can to stop him from making a
shot. Exactly. That's all itwas. But unfortunately it hit him in
a place you're not supposed to hithim, and it looked like you and
he patched things up going into thelocker room. Huh oh yeah. Definitely.
Jayalen House a good friend of mine. I've been putting against him since
I was in middle school, veryyoung, maybe elementary school. So I've

(03:00):
known him through the circuit, throughoutcollege, a good friend of mine once
again, So not intentionally, justhappen. And so that game is over,
and now you've got one more regularseason game and one more game in
the Safemart Center where you've been playingthe last four years. There's only two
guys in the history of Fresno Statebasketball who have more assists than you've rung

(03:23):
up in your four years as aBulldog, And if people are wondering,
that would be Kevin Bell and DominicYoung. What's it gonna mean to you
to play one more time in frontof the Red Wave on Saturday afternoon.
For it's gonna be in a lot, It's gonna be emotional. I mean,
I didn't start here, but I'vedone four years here and this is
my home. This is a place. I let it be a place with

(03:45):
great people. So I mean it'sgonna be a very emotional game, but
I'm gonna embrace and enjoy every momentof it. Get to play in front
of my family one more time,in front of my friends, and in
front of the fans. So it'sgonna it's gonna be fun. Saturday,
four o'clock Seenior Day at the SaveMart Center for the Bulldogs as they battle
to Wyoming Cowboys. And then you'llget to see them again on Wednesday in

(04:06):
the Mountain West Tournament, which willbe kind of fun. I do have
to ask you, since we're hereat the baseball park again, if you
didn't hear it, we're talking basketball, but we're at the baseball stadium because
it's a big one for the DiamondDogs. Tonight. You're eight and three
Diamond Dogs host ten and oh innineteenth rank th U c Ervine six oh
five. First pitch. You'll hearit all right here. Have you ever
in your four years here have youhad a chance to come out here and

(04:30):
watch the baseball team compete? Idid, actually for the first time the
other day. My girlfriend Siana wasthrowing the first pitch, so I got
to come check them out a littlebit. How'd she do? She did
good? She did good, shethrew well. Yes, sir, did
you ever pitch it? Uh?No, I did not, piss I
did play baseball. Most quarterbacks werea pitcher at some point. No,
I didn't pitch. That was Iwas a catcher, a short stop,

(04:53):
Catcher, I wouldn't have guess catYeah, all right, short stop,
I could see yes there. So, uh, when it comes to this
last game Saturday and then the MountainWest Tournament, what are you playing for?
What are you and your teammates lookingforward to, and what do you
really believe? I think at thispoint you're just playing for pride, and

(05:14):
you also playing for knowing that anythingcould happen during this time. So I
mean, if we heat up,we make shots, I mean, anything
can happen. You still hang yourhat on what you believe in and as
defense, So I mean around thistime of the year, you never know.
You never know when you think backof the last four years. And

(05:34):
I know you'll be plenty of sentimentalSaturday afternoon because your mom and dad will
be there, and your brother who'sbeen around the team all year this year
will be there, and I'm surea lot of other people, your girlfriend,
other people cheering for you. Whenyou think back over four years,
what's the difference between the Isaiah Hillwho came here four years ago and the

(05:55):
guy who's going to be out theresoaking up the chairs of the Red Wave
on Saturday afternoon. Yeah, Ijust think I just grew tremendously. Uh.
First as a man, I mean, coach had He's been my rock
since I've been here. Uh,someone I could look up to, someone
who's gave me so much advice.I had to become a better basketball player
and become a better man off thecourt. And Uh, as a basketball

(06:18):
player, I think I've grown tremendouslyas well. I just think that I
always just kept my head down andgot better every year, regardless of what
was going on the outside with otherpoint guards, better point guards, whatever
the case is. So I justfelt like I just ran my own race
while I was here, and that'simportant. And the race isn't over yet.

(06:39):
And you know, there are afew games that I look at this
year and to say, boy, almost right, and I'm sure you do
the same thing. Definitely the UNLBgame, the Boys game, the Utah
State game. I mean, thoseare three of the hottest teams in the
league right now, and you guyshad that chance of the final minute to
beat them and it didn't happen. And and some teams end up maybe getting
defined by that, and then theyget in that situation again and it's like,

(07:00):
Okay, when's that going to happenagain. Yeah, I don't sense
that from you guys, And I'mwondering if you have this feeling that,
Hey, if we win that firstgame of the Mountain West Tournament, maybe
we get a chance to finish thejob that we almost finished before. Yeah,
definitely. I mean, like Isaid, anything happened. If we
go and take care of business thatfirst game and we're around in towards the

(07:21):
last minutes of the game, Ithink I have nothing but the utmost confidence
that our guys could pull it offand win the game. Saturday, four
o'clock, Wyoming coming to town, and that's another game. I mean,
I just talked about the close callswith UNLB and Boise State and the Aggies,
But that Wyoming game, it feelslike forever ago. What do you

(07:44):
remember about that matchup? And howmuch are you're looking forward to a chance
this little pay back? Yeah, definitely we need some payback. Acott hit
a big shot, good player,So I mean, it happens as basketball,
but we definitely we need our getback. Being your handers right here.
It was there. It was agreat shot. I mean, good
players made great sets. Yeah,it was a great close out too.

(08:05):
I'll tell you what we're gonna closeout this segment, take a break,
come back with more with Isaiah Hillthan coach Justin Hudson will join us.
We're out here at the baseball parkbecause it's a big one for the Diamond
Dogs tonight, six oh five.First pitch against unbeaten and nationally ranked U
see Irvine. Hey, maybe youremember last year at the Save Mart Center
when Isaiah Hill and the Bulldogs knockedoff an unbeaten and nationally ranked New Mexico
team. The Diamond Dogs have achance to hand you see your vine.

(08:28):
It's first lost tonight and you canbe a part of it here at the
ballpark. By the way, Idid tweet out the concession's menu. If
you're looking for what you're gonna eatat the ballpark tonight, maybe Isaiah Hill's
interested in some of this. Yougot your nachos, hot dog, chili
dog, the quarter pound Fresno Statehot dog, the pulled pork nachos,
which weigh about twenty five pounds, the pulled pork sandwich maybe five pounds,

(08:50):

(12:20):
We're here at Pete Biden Field atBob Bennett Stadium. I know I
said basketball and then I said thename of the baseball park. But that's
the story tonight. It's that crossoverseason and we're doing a little crossing over
ourselves because the Bulldog basketball team hasone more home game Saturday at four Senior
Night. We have senior point guardIsaiah Hill with us here at the baseballpark.
Coach Justin Hudson is here. You'llhear from him in a moment.
Then at the end of the houryou'll hear from Ryan Overland. Right before

(12:41):
this big matchup for the Diamond Dogsget started. Six oh five, first
pitches ten and O U see Irvineinvades the Bulldogs Ballpark. Gonna be a
fun one tonight and come see us. We're right by the Pete Biden Statue
and the Dugout Club table. Youcan join the Dugout Club tonight and if
you do, they'll give you ahat. It costs fifty dollars. If

items out there for sale tonight, but you can snag a hat or one
of those clear bags and bring allyour stuff in the ballpark. Looks like
they even printed out rosters for youtonight. So go see Scott and Stan

(13:24):
at the Dugout Club table when youcome, and maybe you can ask Stan
about the nineteen fifty nine College WorldSeries and see if he still remembers it
all these years later. I thinkhe does. Isaiah Hill has a lot
of memories for four years in aBulldog basketball uniform. We've got a few
more minutes with him. But Igot another baseball question for you. Say
so, I think you and Ihave talked about who your favorite basketball player

(13:46):
was growing up? Yeah, definitelywe have, all right, Yeah,
guy who wore number eight? Yeahin twenty four was that my favorite basketball
play? Yeah? Alan, okay, all right, but I think the
goat is lebron Zions. All right. He's on the record for that what's

(14:07):
your favorite Allen Iverson quote something aboutpractice practice. I'm glad you haven't had
that attitude in your four years. We've seen the work you put in and
we've seen a payoff this year. We've seen your assistant turnover ratio this year
really go through the roof, andyou wanted the wins to go through the
roof and that hasn't happened yet.But we're coming down the home stretch and

(14:30):
I asked you about what you're playingfor and what your memories are. But
can I ask you about your teammates? Yeah, definitely, But I did
say I had a baseball question first, So you know, Allen Iverson,
was your your basketball hero? Didyou have a favorite baseball player? Derek
Jeter? Derek Jeter pretty smooth. So your teammates, some of these guys

(14:52):
you've been around for for quite awhile, like Leo, Colo Mario,
a couple of these other guys. What's the number one thing that you like
about the guys you play with thatmaybe fans wouldn't guess, wouldn't understand What
do you know about him because you'rewith them so much? Uh? Yeah,
I mean someone like Leo for instance, regardless of the outcome, losing

(15:13):
or winning. Like, he justbrings energy every day to practice, and
that's with everybody else. I mean, we haven't had the season we wanted.
It's tough to come in and practiceevery day and still go hard knowing
you're not playing for a championship oreven being in the race. So for
those guys just continue to come inand work how they work, I mean,

(15:33):
that's all you could ask for.So I just appreciate those guys for
that, and for you personally, what drives you because you know, we've
seen, like I said a momentago, how hard you work. We've
seen you play almost every minute ofalmost every game. What is it that
really lights your fire, gets yourengine running. I just think it's still

(15:56):
left for the game, just knowingthat you could always better in anything you
do. So I mean, regardlessto what happens. I mean, we've
had so many injuries and things ofthat nature, like the past two years.
It's just it's been tough. ButI mean you got to just sometimes
a doesn't manage, you got tostep up and just continue to do what's
right. Amen. And so that'swhat I try to do every day,

(16:19):
and I mean, it's tough knowingthat life isn't fair and things just haven't
gone our way, but it iswhat it is. And I just got
left for the game and want tocontinue to play after this as well.
So I got to come in withthe business approach. Well, I got
one more basketball junkie question for you, because you know what we see you

(16:41):
do on the floor. Maybe sometimesyou might bust something out that just happens
in the spur of the moment. It's not something you practice, it's just
instinctive. But I know how muchyou wrap a lot of your moves.
We see it in your ball handling, see it in some of the passes
you make, and certainly the shootingstroke that takes a lot of repetition.
So is there a move that you'veactist or something that you've done just messing

(17:02):
around that you've never done in agame that you'd really like to do at
some point before you're done playing.Probably Duck Duck tad that to that.

(23:56):
the baseball park tonight, Big Knightfor the Diamond Dogs, hosting nineteen th
Rainey see Irvine. The and Eatersare ten and oh want of just five
unbeaten teams in the country, andthe Dogs want to change that tonight if
they could knock them off. FresnoState is eight and three, and we're
talking Bulldog basketball for a little whilelonger. We've got coach Justin Hudson here
and coach, thanks for coming out. I know it was a long night
last night, got in after oneam and trying to get ready for Senior

(24:21):
Day Saturday afternoon. I've got questions. I know you were right there with
me. I was, yeah, sitting right next to me on the bench,
right sitting right next to me onthe plane. Long night for you
too, But yeah, and myknees aren't as flexible as they used to
be. You're probably almost as motionalas us, because I know you're rooting

(24:41):
for us. Well. When youget to know the young men in your
program, it's hard not to wantto see him succeed. You have low,
great young men on this team, and we see how badly they want
to win. And I know that'syou too, right. I mean,
nobody wants the record you've ended upwith this year, and this is the
last show the season, so Ithink I'll just leave it up to you

(25:03):
what's really on your heart. That'sprobably a pretty good start because if you
uh. First of all, Isaid, I told you I was gonna
talk about what I wanted to tonight, so I was gonna just do the
typical media question. If you askme something, I'll answer it a different
question. But I was walking aroundthe baseball stadium and I just saw you
were in the Baseball Hall of Fame. What's up with that? I didn't

(25:25):
know I was sitting next to abig wig all this time. That just
means I've been here a long time. That's all that means. And this
is a great baseball program. I'lltell you a lot of history. Yes
it is, Yes it is.But back to your question about the season
and the emotions, you know, you know, let me get some thanks
first, because what you want toknow as a coach, you know,

(25:47):
I think most of us are thisway. I wouldn't know. I was
raised by a coach. I've beenaround a lot. It's a fraternity,
you know. And assistant coaches area fraternity. Head coaches are a fraternity
because they both feels they're going todifferent and stuff. But you know,
you call them the red wave. But I'll be a little bit more.
You know, specific the starting five, the time out club. You know,

(26:10):
when you don't have the type ofseason that you want to have that
everybody wants to have. Those peoplecross your mind. They really do,
you know. And it's not thatthe people that just look at the scroll
they cross your mind too. Wewant those people to win. I want
to win for those people too. When they just look at the scroll and
say, oh, Fresno stay lost, or they just see it on the
news. But the ones that youknow give their time, their money,

(26:34):
come to the games, you know, show up to these things, you
know, and those things. Iwant to let them know. It does
cross your mind, you know itdoes. And more often than you would
think that you want to win forthose people, you know, the people
that hire you, you know, people like yourself that you're sitting in airports,
that that you talk to all thetime. It doesn't just come down

(26:56):
to you, because you can tellwhen people are truly rooting for not just
the school, but also for youryoung men that you have on your team,
and either one it's fine. Idon't mind if they're rooting for any
basketball coach or any of that. But you can also tell the ones that
give your time your money that's greatlyappreciated and yeah, we haven't had the
season that we would like to have. And you don't just think about yourself

(27:19):
in those situations. You think abouteverybody else well, and hopefully a lot
of those everybody else's are going tobe there Saturday at four o'clock, the
last home game of the season, the Bulldogs looking for payback against the Wyoming
team to beat them right at thebuzzer in Laramie. And it's gonna be
one of those strange scenarios coach, where you're playing the same team two games
in a row. You know itgoing in and all kinds of people say,

(27:42):
well, you should do this, you should do that. You know,
I think you just want to goout there and play the game,
don't you. Man? You hitit right on the No, that's too
quick of a turnaround. I mean, you definitely will make some adjustments after
the first one, there's no question. I mean anybody would do that.
But going into this, you're justgonna watch the film from last time,

(28:02):
in two or three of the gamesthat they played recently, see what they're
doing now, and then just goplay the game. It's too we didn't
practice today. I mean we've onlybeen playing five or six guys and they're
dead tired, and sometimes you're gonnashow them the last game, and you
know, I just felt like ifI would have showed them the last game
again today, that would have broughtup some bad feelings, so we didn't
need some rest and get ready forWyoming. Saturday, four o'clock is when

(28:26):
it tips off. Love to seeyou there for the Senior Day ceremonies.
And you have two young men whoare going to be out of eligibility at
the end of this season, IsaiahHill, who had just heard from here
at the baseball park, and IsaiahPope. You have a couple other guys
who are gonna take part in thatSenior Day ceremony because they're not quite sure
what's next. They already have theirdegrees from Fresno State in the Leo Cola
Mario and Donovan Yap, You've beenthrough a few Senior Days here in Fresno

(28:49):
State already. This will be yoursixth to one. Of course, the
one year there are no fans allowed, so that was a little different.
But what's a senior night, SeniorDay scenario like for you? And when
you realize this is the last timethose guys are gonna play in this building.
Probably not as special as it isfor them, you know, but

(29:10):
it's definitely special for me. ButI can imagine they get a little more
emotional, you know, because Idon't plan on the relationship end, and
you know you're gonna end up seeingthem around there. You know you're gonna
call them, You're gonna text them. They're gonna move on to their next
thing, you know. But youknow, this group, even the ones
that I mean Isaiah Pope has onlybeen here one year or what a wonderful

(29:32):
family. So it gets you gettouchy, you start to tear up a
little bit. But you know, for them to go out and play the
game after that is a little differentthan coaching the game. To illustrate how
deeply Isaiah Pope and his family havinggrained themselves in the Bulldog family, it
took less than one season for CoachQ to get Isaiah Pope's mom to share
some of her homemade enchiladas for aboutbroadcast teams about that. Now, it's

(29:56):
just a wonderful family. And Itell you this. You know, young
men don't get better if it's nottheir surrounding circle, If they have too
many messages, if their coach ortheir parents are bad mouthing the coach or
telling them they should do this orthat, they do not get better.
And I think you can look atninety nine point nine percent of our guys
and saw that they all got betterthis year, whether we you know,

(30:18):
didn't reach our goals of what wewanted or not. And those two young
men played through some tough injuries.I mean, Pope hasn't practiced in a
long time with a bad back, and Isaiah hasn't been shooting the ball as
well since he tore a ligament inhis shooting hand thumb. And you're talking
about fighting through some stuff all theway through the year. Some days they
feel good, some days they don't. They have to let me know,

(30:38):
so I know going into the game, you know, but there I appreciate
their efforts and they know that. We're here at Pete Biden Field at Bob
Bennett Stadium. We're a little morethan a half hour away from the first
pitch Presno State hosting number nineteen. You see, Irvine, Hope you're coming
to the yard tonight to help theDiamond Dogs become the first team all year
to beat you see Irvine. We'retalking basketball for a while longer with Coach

(31:00):
Justin Hudson. Thanks again to IsaiahHill for coming out earlier. And before
we take the break, coach aquestion about Isaiah Hill and well, the
way Christy asked it. Christy withthe Timeout Club couldn't be here tonight,
but she still sent her questions inonline, and she wanted to know when
you look at Isaiah Hill in LeoCola Mario, two guys who joined your
program at the same time four yearsago, who have competed for four years,

(31:25):
how much growth you've seen or maybewhat the evidence of that growth that
you see now if you compare theguy you got four years ago to the
guy who's going to go out thereagainst Wyoming Saturday at four o'clock. You
know, growth is a tough question. Sometimes you don't see it until you're
gone as much because it's not justthe basketball part of it. Maybe it's
the the humanistic part of it,you know. And uh, Lilsey,

(31:49):
he's loads out to run pick androll. I think he's gonna make himself
the money the way he runs pickand roll right now. And uh,
you know, his parents are appreciativeof what this program, what this program
has done for him. And Leois just as low and as honest as
the day is long, and he'sgotten better, He's grown in his in

(32:09):
his leadership because he does play moreand he is more aggressed, So I
think he feels that he can speakout more. And he's a wonderful guy.
Leo's one of those guys that neverhas a bad day when he comes
to practice. He so those guysneed certain responsibilities, but you need to
praise them for that that he doesn'thave. He's not moody, and we

(32:29):
all have moods and we all havebad days. But Leo is an energy
giver for sure. And those guyslast they they're pretty successful in life.
If you're an energy giver, right, people want to be around those people.
And amen and energy giver. Ilike that label. I think we'll
put that right on Leo. AndI see that. And he was an

(32:50):
energy giver last night. He wasand I was pissed. And sometime he
would interrupt me at the time outgive energy, and I say, now
you need to be quiet, andhear this because but that shows you the
type of guy he is. Youknow, he was gonna he was gonna
continue to bring energy all the waythroughout that game. And that's who he
is, and that's that's huge.I'm just chuckling. I've been accused of

(33:14):
being that guy a time or two. Tell you what we're gonna take the
break. If you've got a questionfor Coach Hudson, you can let us
know. We're here for another fifteenminutes or so, and then the last
part of the show we'll hear fromCoach Ryan Overlin is his Diamond Dogs.
Take on you see Irvine six ohfive, first pitch, Come join us
at the ballpark. The food isgreat. Have you ever eaten the food
here? Coach? I have afew times thinking about it tonight pretty strong.

(33:37):
I gotta get home and Western Film. I guess there is that priority,
you know, but they might giveyou a to go box. Yeah,
take that burger home. We're herewith Coach Justin Hudson talking Bulldog basketball
at the baseball game for tonight only. If you come to hear the coach
stick around for the ball game. We'll be right back on the Bulldog Sports

or two seven eight Dogs. Hey, there's Andrew over there. He just
signed his letter of intent today toplay baseball at Fresno State. He's gonna
be throwing out the first pitch tonightand he's gonna bring it. He's a
Dodger fan. I think you grewup a Dodger fan, didn't you.
Coach A man, I don't know. I don't know how to answer that
question. I'm gonna be political onthat one, which everyone's gonna give me
more claps. Dodgers are giants.I think this is a giant neighborhood,

(37:38):
isn't it? Unless you ask Timhere, he's a Dodger fan. Did
you have a favorite baseball player growingup? Are you too much of the
basketball gym with your dad? Iliked what was the shortstop for the Cardinals,
Ozzie Smith? Yes, the Wizardof oz yep. I bet he's
a point guard. At some pointyou play a little short stop, little

(37:59):
shortstop? Yeah, yeah, betright handed or left handed. I couldn't
hit it, but I could feelso. It wouldn't really matter which side
of bed, but I could.I could feel I had good hands.
Uh. Well, we hope tosee some some good hands, some good
shots, some good rebounding Saturday andsave Mart Center against the Wyoming Cowboys Senior
Day four o'clock. As we talkedabout, I've got a few more minutes

(38:21):
with Coach Hut and then for thelast part of the show, you're gonna
hear from coach Ryan Overland as hisdogs get ready to battle. Nineteenth rank.
Do you see, Irvine, that'sa six oh five. First pitch
here at the ballpark, and gethere early. It's filling up. The
concessions are already open. You cango get your burger, your hot dog,
your chicken sandwich, your hot link, your pulled pork, nachos.
Those are pretty popular. They havecoffee, hot chocolate. They'll keep you

(38:43):
warm. It is a little cooltonight, so dress warmly out here at
the ballpark. Coach, you've beenthrough some things this year, and every
season brings the unexpected. But Iwas just thinking about your comments about Leo
colo Mario before the break, andwe've seen tough times bring out the best
in him. You know, hewas thrust into a situation in that UNLV

(39:07):
game when knock Boaci got hurt thathe wasn't necessarily prepared for. You guys
had to adjust on the fly,and here he ends up with a career
game. And we've seen it sincethen that he's able to use a different
skill set that you normally see atthat center position and really be effective.
And sometimes the things we don't askfor show us what we're really capable of.

(39:29):
And then we see leaders emerge. When you think about leaders whether it's
on this team or leadership principles ingeneral, what are the things that you've
learned over the years that you reallygravitate toward selfless? I think you if
you're being a leadership role, you'regoing to be selfless. I think your
own personality you have to be genuine. So if you're a quiet leader like

(39:53):
Zay, then that's what it is. If you're a demonstrative leader and an
energy giver like Leo, then youdo that. But I think it has
to be sincere and genuine. Sopeople are not gonna listen if they don't
think you're selfless. If it's allabout you, they think there's an agenda,
you know. And then you gotto be willing to deal with the
cost of leadership too, because sometimesyou got to say things to people.

(40:16):
Sometimes you got to hurt people bymaking decisions that they don't like. And
then a lot of times, Iknow, when you're in my position,
you gotta you're gonna be misunderstood andyou ain't gonna be able to explain it.
And that's I don't want to takecredit for that, because that's Kirby
smart, you know, because Ido a lot of reading about leaders and

(40:37):
men, and Kirby Smart, whohas Georgia football doing really well. You
know, he's talked about those things, and I think those hit especially when
you become a head coach, isyou don't a lot of times people are
gonna develop opinions about what's going onand what's happening and what happens there,
and then you're not gonna be able. That's one of the costs of leadership
that you're just going to take itand deal with it and you't gonna have

(41:00):
chance to explain it. And Iheard you sharing a quote that a lot
of coaches, a lot of leadershave gone to over the last century,
sharing it with your team. Ithink it was in Reno last week,
the old Teddy Roosevelt quote about theman in the arena. Yeah. You
know, I've noticed that we haven'tplayed very well in front of crowds.
And I've never been an underdog,at least in my own mind, So

(41:24):
you know, when you lose thegames. Early James Madison, I thought
we have a chance to play withhim, and we came out, you
know, hindsight nervous San Diego State. I thought it was one of our
best game plans. We've had tohandle their pressure down at their place in
four years, and we came outI thought nervous. So we talk about

(41:45):
the man arena of that's what matters. You're putting yourself out there and you're
already successful. A lot of theseyoung men have degrees. They show up
every day and good times and badtimes. And we talked a lot about
it's not about the critic and youknow the people that nay sayers, you
know, it's not that you don'tlisten to them, it's not that you
don't respect them. But it's adifferent role of you're the man in the

(42:07):
arena or the woman in arena. You know, my wife's you know,
a great coach and I had tothrow her in there right now. But
you know, Teddy Teddy Roosevelt wasa little behind his time. But the
woman in how about everybody in thearena. But yes, I think it
was relative to our team at thetime of you know, when we're not
having success as much as we allwanted and liked, you know, remember

(42:30):
that you're the one out there trying. And when you're in a leadership position,
sometimes you have to answer tough questionsand sometimes it's hard to know what
to say, and as you justsaid, sometimes the people you're answering won't
understand and you have to be okaywith that. And you and I didn't
really talk. I mean, wehaven't had one of these shows since.
There was a postgame conversation where youknow, everything was fresh, and I

(42:53):
think you maybe said a few thingsthat you'd like to be able to say
a little differently the postgame comments atthe home game. Uh not really.
I think I would like to apologizeto Saou and Terry for my language.
But I didn't actually cuss at theyoung man. I just said I didn't
cuss. I didn't call him aname, and I only said one thing.

(43:15):
I was actually pretty cool about it. And you asked the same question.
I've been here six years. Youasked the same question five minutes before,
and like you say, if youwant me to answer it, then,
yeah, we won two games atthe Buzzer this year. Yes,
we were not supposed to switch againstBoise State three years ago, and we

(43:36):
switched and the young man was cryingin the locker room and we were supposed
to foul. And if you wantto talk about it. I mean,
if I called time out, thenthat give they don't have a timeout,
so that gives them a chance toset up a play. So all you're
doing is back and forth. Soyou finished it with a guy hit the
thirty five foot bag shot. Andthat doesn't mean that you're not taking accountability,

(43:57):
because everybody takes If they don't dowhat I asked them to do,
then it's on me. If Ididn't recruit the right kid, it's on
me. But you want me tolie. So all I did was really
use a word, and it wasn'treally directed towards him. It was directed
towards me. I asked him aquestion, actually, so it wasn't Now
you can pick and choose what youwant to snip and do this because like

(44:20):
we said before, I think wementioned that word agenda in politics, and
I think you asked that question fiveminutes before and you said, I I
asked you, how are you hopingthat last? Yeah, that's what the
strategy was. And the strategy wasthe foul and we didn't do it.
But if you're really you know,if you've really been doing this thirty something
years like I have. I knowI look young, but I'm not You're

(44:42):
going to take responsibility. It's goingto fall on your shoulders regardless. So
you know. But if you reallywant to think that we've lost a lot
of close games of my tenure,we have. We also won a lot
of close ones. We were actuallynumber three in the country at winning close
games our first year, to dowith Deshaun Taylor and Braxton Huggins, by
the way, sure, right,so we were seven to two on the

(45:04):
road. We actually have won closegames this year, right, We've have
a lot and I can remember themway more than anybody else can. I
can remember calling a bad play atSan Diego State when I was trying to
get Orlando the ball. Also remembercalling a really good play and getting Junior
or three that's ended in the overtime. So I remember them a lot better
than anybody. So if we havean agenda about it and want to and

(45:27):
want to paint a narrative, wellit's out there. We paint the whole
one. We're almost out of timehere because the first pitch is coming up
at six, and we've got ourconversation with coach Overlin previewing that in a
couple of moments. But you justmentioned six years, and then you've got
six years worth of memories and you'vegot some seniors that you hope to set
out with the win Saturday at fouro'clock, and then the conference tournament where

(45:47):
anything can happen. Everyone's talking abouthow wild the conference tournament is going to
be this year. Is there anythingthat you're looking forward to that you think
people listening should look forward to aswell. I'm looking forward to playing the
game with my fellas. You know. This has been I've been in the
conference the toughest two years ever.So that was, and that's a good

(46:09):
thing and a bad thing. I'vebeen in the conference the toughest two years
ever. I've been in the conferencewhen there was a national championship runner up
that we lost two by two.Yeah, and I was asked, how
come you didn't? How come youlost to him? You know. I've
been in the conference the toughest timeever. So it's what it is,
and we haven't done what we're supposedto do. And nobody hurts more than

(46:30):
for that than me. But that'swhat it is. I've been in the
conference where the resources have been thehighest ever, where the crowds have been
the highest ever where Nils came intoplay, where transfer Porto has came into
play. I started off in theconference, and if if you were at
a certain school in your conference, you couldn't go to a certain school in
the conference. So when I cometo Fresne State, the San Diego State

(46:52):
could couldn't come to FRESNOE. Rightthen I finished in the conference where you
could leave from from Fresno to NewMexico. So maybe next week. So
I've seen it all actually, andI'm just I don't look forward to much
besides coaching my young man. Andthen and then also I told you I
hijack it is walking around the citybecause you know, you mentioned a negative

(47:14):
experience, but I haven't had hardlyany. I mean, and I tell
you everywhere I go, they knowme. And I would tell my kids
that. And you're sitting there andyou say, nobody says anything, and
they'll wait till you get up.Good try, coach. We support you.
Coach, whether you're walking in target, whether you're at the movies,
they might see it coming in.They might take a look at you and
see how you behave and see itcoming out. And that was that is

(47:37):
probably you know something that is mostimportant to me because besides working with these
kids, I've been treated extremely fairand nice and cordial. But you know
I'm from this valley, so Idon't expect nothing different hey man, and
we expect to see you have agreat day Saturday. Thanks for coming out
to the ballpark tonight. I hopeyou get something good to eat and help

(47:57):
the Dogs get a win. Thanksfor having me. That's cause Justin Hudson

we come back, you'll hear fromCoach Ryan Overland and be there at Save
Mart Center Saturday, four o'clock, tip three thirty to pre game show.

just had a thought. It's timefor our one on one conversation with head
baseball coach Ryan Overland, brought toyou by Valley Children's Healthcare, ranked one
of the best children's hospitals in thecountry and caring for kids from Kern County
to the Capitol and from the Sierrato the Central Coast. Maybe we should
talk a little basketball with Coach RyanOverland. What was your greatest basketball moment

(51:52):
ever? Real game, pickup game, Papa shot at the arcade, greatest
basketball moment ever? Wow? Well, yeah, I know, I'm growing
up. I played basketball through highschool with my closest friends all played basketball,
So that was a lot of mybest memories through high school or with
them, and some really good highschool teams with my closest friends. I'll

(52:15):
brag on it a little bit.I made a full court shot to win
a win a JV basketball game oppositefree throw line one time. Yeah,
wow, just threw up their prayerand it went in. Threw it up
from full court, sunk it.Any video evidence of this, if anybody's
got a VCR, then yeah,if you it's on a VHS tape.

(52:36):
If you can find a VCR,there's there's evidence somewhere. So what was
your reaction when it went in?Shock? Yeah, pure of shock.
So and just the thrill, amazement, goosebump kind of calibration level there.
How does that compare to the dogpilethat's on the wall of your office of
Omaha in two thousand and eight?Kind I mean, I guess the dog

(53:00):
pile a little bit anticipated, alittle more the moment kind of like you
think is coming. You think likeas you're getting closer and closer in a
moment like that, it's kind ofwow, that just happened. But yeah,
two definitely big moments in my personalhistory. I suppose hey see,
I thought I knew you. NowI know you a little better. And
speaking of the Bulldog baseball basketball crossoverseason, want to wish a belated Happy

(53:24):
birthday to coach Lenboardette, Bulldog legendwho played basketball and baseball here at Fresno
State Hall of Fame, coach atFresno City College, and World War Two
veteran who spent a lot of timein this ballpark. Turned ninety eight yesterday,
So happy birthday, coach. Andas for you, coach Overlin,
pretty big week here for your guys. You got it done in conference play
when your Mountain West opening series lastweekend, but now between now and Sunday,

(53:46):
four games against two solid non conferenceopponents. What's the focus for you
and your team starting tonight? Yeah, this is exciting. Four games in
front of us in the one week. Of the five games, we're gonna
be going seven games over eight gameor eight days here, so obviously going
to be getting deeper into the bullpenand asking a little more of some guys

(54:07):
that haven't done a whole lot yet. But that's that's what this part of
the year is for, is tofind out a little about your team and
how you respond. And Tuesday wasdefinitely not the cleanest, prettiest game of
the year, but really proud ofthis group for staying together and find a
way to win it. Obviously thatcould not how you want to be playing,
or some of the things a littlelong characteristic, but still to get

(54:29):
through that and find a way towin. Definitely proud of, you know,
and coming into this weekend here withIrvine the next two days and then
Colombia, I mean, the Servineteam returns the entire lineup from a thirty
seven thirty eight win team a yearago. That still was a shame that
they were left out of the NCAAtournament, way more than deserving of being
in that their old physical experience. They're gonna be coached really well, they're

(54:51):
gonna play, you know, reallygood baseball, and it's gonna have to
play to our best to beat them. But that's really what this this part
of the year is about, isjust making sure you're playing in the game
right, and then it doesn't matterwho's in the other dugout. If you're
taking care of the things you're supposedto take care of, the opponent really
doesn't matter that much. Yeah, and I'm glad you brought up Tuesday night
because yeah, there were mistakes thatwere made. It wasn't the prettiest game,

(55:13):
as you said, but if youif you break a game down into
bite sized chunks. There are alot of situations in that game where your
team couldn't have been more clutch.Yeah, well, especially I mean what
Eddie Salivar did with a two strike, two out home run to tie the
game in the eighth. There After, you know, kind of similar situation

(55:34):
where we made a two out airin the seventh that led to a three
run home run. They made atwo out air that led to a two
run home run, so to capitalizeon that. And then some really good
at bats in that tenth inning, starting with Marco to the three to two
base hit, and then Newton asa senior, puts down the bunt like
you should, no problem, movesthe guy over, and obviously Davis set
the hit by pitch playing for Worththe walk, setting it up for Saldivar

(55:55):
to do what he does and gofrom That's what's one of the things that's
so special about him as a hitterthat you he can do so many different
things to lining the ball out toright field one a bat and then shooting
the ball through the six hole thenext, it's really tough to pitch to
and know where to attack him well. And at the end of that game,
you had some pretty good bullpen worktoo from Crimerosa and hop Fee shutting

(56:17):
the door. And of course whenyou got off an inning light on Sunday,
you had to play the extra inningon Tuesdays. Just how this game
evens out. But as far aspitching goes, when you're looking at thirty
six innings over the next four dayshere, how do you approach that?
What's the plan from a pitching staffperspective and what are you hoping for?
Well, if we're going to goJake Dixon tonight on a day's day short

(56:40):
rest, but I mean as aas a senior and a guy who set
in the tone for the weekend,we'll keep him tonight. I'm still kind
of waiting on a couple of thingshere to what we'll exactly we'll do Friday
and Saturday. We'll keep anchor onSunday, and like I said before,
there'll be some more guys getting someinnings and counting on some guys to get
some outs. Maybe in some situationsthey haven't done yet. But really the

(57:00):
message to the team is when justwhen your name's called, do what you're
good at and and you know whena couple of guys come in to get
us three outs. Get us theouts and do your part. But I'm
excited for Dixon too, starting usfor the weekend here today. You know
he's going to compete, He's goingto be in control of the game and
attack on the zone. Yeah, against the quality opponent and nationally ranked an

(57:22):
unbeaten opponent at that. But you'vegot a new recruit who wants to help
you get the win tonight, TeamImpact, and a friend from the West
Side who wants to be a bulldog. Can you tell us the story there?
Yeah, So we've been partnered witha program called Team Impact who's matched
us with a pretty special bulldog, and Andrew, who's nine years old and

(57:45):
his family with his little brother Jacob, and he's got twin sisters that are
three years old. So yeah,Andrew did make it his official signing to
join our team today. And Andrew'sbeen He's as tough as they come.

our players to be around. Andthe time we spent with Andrew and his

given back to other families and otherkids that have been in similar situations that

some gift bags for families and kidsthat there are Valley Children's that we were
able to be a part of goingover there and handing those out to families
and some time of need. Andthe toy drive that Andrew put together that
we brought out to Valley Children's withover three hundred toys for kids over at

his family absolutely looking for any support, more than welcome and more than deserving.
